Classic is still rocking By SUE PATERICK

IT will be double, double, toil and trouble at Kempsey High School Hall later this month when a group of Year 9 and 10 students perform Highway to Hell, a play based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The twist is their play will be performed to the rocking songs of AC/DC. Macbeth, written in 1606, is a tragedy about ambition and how the effects of seeking power no matter what can damage a person both physically and mentally. Drama teacher, Chris Austin, had been

planning to stage Macbeth for the past 15 years but it just hadn’t happened. “Then all the stars fell together at the same time and we could do Macbeth because we could re-write the Year 9 and 10 drama program and build a major show into one semester,” Chris said. “So that meant we could do rehearsals in school time.” Chris had also wanted to do a modern version of Macbeth because it was the shortest of Shakespeare’s plays and the bloodiest, and he could get the students more involved. • Continued Page 10

Kempsey Target staff, members of the Uniting Church Family Care Group of Kempsey and SWR, and staff from the Kempsey branch of Uniting Australia at the recent annual Christmas Appeal launch when Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell donated the first presents (from left): Mystique Walder, Julie Fischer, Bob Milton, Mayor Campbell, Target Manager Kirsten Borger, Richard Beckworth, Julie Wright, Lenore Warton, Annette Lawrence, Sharn Beckworth and Lyndal Bunny.

Community Appeal is again right on Target for local shoppers By SUE PATERICK FOR many of us Christmas is a special time of giving, family and yummy food but for those less fortunate it is a time of hardship. Every year Target and Uniting Australia hold a Christmas Appeal with the aim of raising over a million dollars to support the thousands of community services and programs delivered across the Uniting Network. This money helps women and children fleeing domestic violence, people seeking

emergency relief or children and families in desperate situations. The Christmas Appeal was launched in all Target stores across Australia in November and will run until Sunday, December 24. Each year in Target stores a Christmas tree is decorated with Appeal baubles that members of the community can purchase from the checkout for just $1. Each person’s name is then written on these festive paper decorations that adorn the emerald green pine tree. Kempsey Target recently launched its annual

Christmas Appeal. Manager, Kirsten Borger, said the Kempsey store raised $975 last year, which helped buy presents and food hampers. Presents for children from birth to 18 can also be left under Target’s Christmas tree and will be donated to local children and families in need. These gifts can be either unwrapped or wrapped, but Mrs Borger asked that if wrapped to please write what age group the present is suitable for on the paper. Sharn Beckworth from Kempsey Uniting Church Family Care Group said 300 presents

were donated to the Christmas Appeal last year. “It was very well supported,” she said. “And we are indebted to the people of Kempsey for being so supportive and generous.” Along with the presents, Kempsey’s Uniting Church Family Care Group also buy and distribute food hampers to the families to help make their Christmas a happy and special one. Coordinator, Richard Beckworth, explained they get names of needy families from local schools and the schools then deliver the presents and food hampers.

buy fancy food at Christmas or presents,” said Robin. “Particularly given the commercialization of Christmas and the emphasis on buying nice things for your kids. “Things that kids want nowadays are becoming expensive, like iPads, which puts a lot of pressure on families.” In most cases these families haven’t always been struggling but through many different circumstances they are finding themselves quickly in tough situations. “Families who are affected range from single parents or parents who are together but one may have lost their job or has had an accident at work and they aren’t getting worker’s compensation for or one of their kids has got sick and they can’t keep up with the medical bills. There’s a million different scenarios that people are struggling in,” explained Robin.

That’s why the Vinnies Christmas Appeal is feeding families and paying bills. “The need for Vinnies, especially around Christmas, is growing,” Robin said. “Most of the money we receive comes through our shops or from individual donations and goes out through conferences, small meeting offices run by volunteers. “People ring up to make an appointment and they explain to the volunteers what their concerns are, it might be problems with rent or a legal issue or they may have problems paying utility bills which have gone up substantially and continue to go up. “Judging on the number of people that are presenting to these St Vincent De Paul conferences over the last year, we can say that the number of people experiencing hardship has increased significantly.”

The Saint Vincent De Paul Society North Coast President Yvonne Wynen has come across many cases of families living in poverty and hopes the Vinnies Christmas Appeal will bring a new lease of life to those families. “Here on the North Coast we live in a beautiful place, yet more than 80,000 people are experiencing poverty, and a further 38,500 are at risk of it,” said Yvonne. “Even for many people with jobs, financial hardship can be just a few pay cheques away. If they do fall into poverty they face a real risk of becoming homeless. Money donated to Vinnies Christmas Appeal on the North Coast will be used to help local families. Donations are tax deductible and can be made at any of the 27 Vinnies shops between Tweed Heads and Port Macquarie-Hastings, or by calling the Lismore office on (02) 6621 5835.

Not all feel Xmas spirit By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC MANY families will be doing it tough this Christmas on the Mid North Coast. While most of us are preparing for a happy, festive Christmas, there are also many families who are only two pay cheques away from poverty. “One in seven children on the North Coast, from Tweed to Port Macquarie, are living in poverty,” said Robin Osborne, regional Communications Manager for the St Vincent de Paul Society. “That is the North Coast, it’s a lovely place to live climatically if you’ve got work, but if you don’t, it’s very tough.” The Vinnies Christmas Appeal hopes to make a big change this Christmas. “It’s hard enough paying the household essentials let alone forking out extra money to

Cinema just not logical KEMPSEY Shire Council again have tabled an up-coming agenda to invest $2million of ratepayers monies into providing a cinema complex to be run by an independent corporation. Despite all economic logic KSC seem adamant to going ahead with this project. Both Council and overseers (Office of Local Government) claim and confirm it will operate at a loss but council are adamant it will benefit other local business. This is nothing but a delusion. Here are 5 of many reasons it should not go ahead: 1. KSC claim this project will provide 22 jobs. I have attended the Majestic Cinema in Port Macquarie (an area that is significantly larger than our region) on two occasions in the past two weeks. The attendance in the cinema was five other people on one occasion and three on the other occasion. Staff managing the ticket sales - candy bar and ushering on entry was one. One young junior person. At the very busiest times perhaps three people would manage the (Kempsey) facility, which would be Friday and Saturday evenings when shops were closed, so no real economic benefit to local stores which Council claim would benefit. Therefore over 3 shifts, 7 days a week approximately 6 staff overall would run the complex not 22 as claimed by KSC. 2. South West Rocks has an independent cinema which recently re-opened. Sadly it closed previously due to lack of patronage. 3. KSC is fully aware and confirm this project

as a whole is not commercially viable but persist it is a worthwhile venture by way of other businesses close by would gain extra custom. 4. Office of Local Government have clearly stated the project has questionable economic viability along with questionable economic modelling and research. 5. KSC has many more important issues to invest ratepayers monies into. I believe this project to be another of KSC’s shoddy projects. There is no way that Kempsey ratepayers would reap any benefits that KSC claim. Employment and economic figures quoted by KSC are nothing but fallacy and ratepayers will again be burdened with the extra costs. Glen Ravenscroft Temagog

Careful with our Big Koala RECENT suggestions to modify the proposed Hastings Big Koala design and potential location need thorough community consultation. Changing from the idea of a single Big Koala to an embracing pair dressed in bright colours is too radical and not well suited to any Port Macquarie Plaza car park development. Our Koalas are creatures of nature and deserve more respect. So too do our visitors when arriving at our city’s gateway. Paul Dirago Lighthouse Beach

DOWN Thumbs Down I AM very unhappy with a local vet my pet was taken to recently. He could not walk. He was paralysed from the waist down. The vet said to bring him in. The vet had a look at him and said there was no tick on him. Got told they were going to give him a tablet and put him in the cage for the night. Then the next morning I got a call from them saying: ‘Pick him up.’ When my partner went in there to get him he was more paralysed. I did take him to a new vet the day after, but it was too late I had to put my baby to sleep. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. CONGRATULATIONS to the Port Central management for the colourful display of the hanging baskets of Petunia’s up high under the outside roof cover. They were there last year and continued all year. It would be nice if the Port MacquarieHastings Council could follow suit and make a wonderful colourful appearance to the Horton Street shopping centre.

Thumbs Up A HUGE thank you in appreciation to Robert and Zach from Holster Painting Contractors who came to my rescue recently under unforeseen circumstances. Pete Murray - great entertainment come their way. Local artists, Chris Rose, Pam Hata and Roy Rose did us proud, nailed their sets, warmed up the crowd and the place was pumping when William Crighton, Busby Marou and Pete Murray performed. I was extremely lucky to be invited to a private area with a bird’s eye view over the whole set-up. The thing that struck me most? How awesome it was to see over 1,200 people from our community come together, kick back, relax with a couple of coldies and spend some quality time together and enjoy some bloody good tunes and company! No drama’s just good times. Well done and thumbs up to those who attended, see you next time. I know I’ll be looking forward to the next one!

Thumbs Up TO Fred at the One Stop Service and Suspension Centre, Hastings River Drive. An ear-piercing alarm triggered in our motorhome on the way out of Port Macquarie. He listened to our description and needs. Then Fred skilfully worked out the obscure cause and referred us to Natrad around the corner for a specific part. We were then able to be on our way. Great customer service guys and much appreciated.

Thumbs Up TO the young people working on the road works on the Hill Street project recently. Two of them saw me parking in Seaview Street and started to carry items from my car to my nearby home next to the shop. They immediately took control and carried all my items for me and were most apologetic to my being inconvenienced due to the works.

HAPPY Anniversary! I just sat down to write this week’s column and realised the significance of the date – November 21 - it’s our third anniversary! Although I’ve worked for the paper since it started in 2009, I jumped off the cliff and took ownership of the Independent in November, 2014. OMG! A lot has happened in the last three years. Plenty of ups and downs, good times and bad times; times (lots of times) when I have just wanted to just walk away. Ironically, November 21, 2016 is also the 12-month anniversary of the official end of my marriage. Let’s just say, newspaperland is a tough enough gig at the best of times, trying to keep it together in the public eye has been a relentless task. But, I’ve made it out the other end and I’ll be raising my glass to the official ending of my personal ‘annus horriblus’ today! Cheers! Here’s to the next three years! Moving right along, I had the opportunity to attend the first Live Lane Festival held at Moorebeer Brewing Co., PMQ, on Sunday, November 19, what a blast! I’ve been to plenty of festivals and concerts in my time, some I choose not to remember (worst ever? Bob Dylan), some I was obviously enjoying myself too much to remember (circa 1978 – 1980) and others that have been top notch and stayed with me always. (First concert – Leo Sayer) Congratulations to all the guys and gals at Moorebeer. The venue was great, the line-up was fantastic, the people were chilled to the max. What more could you want? The vibe all day was brilliant! It is awesome to see pop-up events like this happening more often around the community, not only do they help boost our local economy, they give our up and coming local talent opportunities to work within the music industry - opportunities that may not ordinarily

Join in and/or give generously when the Mid North Coast NSW Harley Owners Group stage their annual Salvos Christmas toy run this Saturday (November 25)

MNC toy run roars into action By BARBARA DYER THERE could be a few teddy bears riding pillion to Port Macquarie on November 25 when the Mid North Coast NSW Harley Owners Group roars off on the annual Salvos Christmas toy run. The HOG riders rev up the annual toy run, gathering at 10am on Saturday at the Laurieton United Services Club where they will be joined by fellow riders on any make or model bike. Assistant to the Corps Officers Greg Cocking said that at this time of the year when gift giving was on the minds of families doing it tough, the HOG chapter really got the donations campaign off to a roaring start. “They have been doing it for years and last

year more than 200 riders signalled the start of the Christmas gift-giving appeal,” he said. “We helped 450 individuals last year out to Laurieton, Comboyne and Wauchope and the HOG toy run certainly was significant in that.” HOG spokesman Chris Jackson said good weather would see a great turnout and he was hoping for about 200 riders to turn up. “Riders will meet at the Laurieton United Services Club at 10am ready to leave at 11am,” he said. “We’ll head up Ocean Drive, in Kennedy drive and take in all the beaches to Town Beach, finishing at Westport Park on the Hastings River foreshore. “We really enjoy this ride and knowing we’re helping kids is a great thing.

JOURNEY THROUGH Fully escorted by Jenny Peters Departing Monday, April 2, 2018 for 15 days

“On Monday we visited Hastings Public School and the kids there are really generous too, raising money through a free dress day and also donating gifts and toys to us for the Salvos. “It’s a really fantastic effort and much appreciated.” While many think automatically of gifts for littlies, the Salvos’ Greg said that older children loved receiving movie vouchers and gift cards which gave teenagers the chance to buy something for themselves; something they like. “It’s always tricky knowing what to get the older kids and they always are happy with something they can spend,” Greg laughed. The Salvos will be at Laurieton to accept any gifts before the ride and will also follow the riders to take gifts from any supporters en route.

From Port to the world and back MAUREEN Cooke is known by many in Port Macquarie, as you might expect from someone born in the town, who returned from Paris to become the town’s first bridal couturier and who, in 1971 despite strong opposition from local retailers, established the town’s first markets which still run today as the Art Society Market Bazaar in Hastings River Drive. She admits that, even at the age of 87, she is so busy she barely has time to read a book ‘and I have so, so many books I want to read’,” Maureen adds. She will find time, perhaps, between her painting lessons at the Art Society Heritage Gallery; or working as an ordained minister to conduct a christening, wedding or even funeral; going to the gym daily; overseeing weekly Sunday markets and just being part of a multitude of activities that crowd her busy active life. But Maureen’s story really began way back in a Jack and the Beanstalk sort of way, with the sale of a pretty jersey calf and a longing to see what lay beyond the township where she was born. Maureen was born in May, 1930, at the threebedroom Cottage Hospital at the top of Gordon Street. Winter was just around the corner and the road to her home was via a dusty bullock track, but Maureen was destined to leave it all behind at a relatively young age.

At 87 Maureen is still living life

I had a wonderful life. It’s been an adventure and I would not change a thing.

LIKE the lady herself, Maureen Cooke’s stories are timeless, as BARBARA DYER discovers

She was bright at school, finishing at 14, before the legal age when she could leave, so filled in time with administrative duties for the headmaster. “I finished with another girl, but she was the doctor’s daughter and went on to Pymble Ladies College,” recalls Maureen, sitting on the verandah of the Port Macquarie Art Society’s heritage listed Manor House overlooking Hamilton Green. For Maureen, an apprenticeship in tailoring awaited and then, her mother might have supposed, there would follow marriage and children, while Maureen’s two brothers in the family pursued whatever path they chose. But young Maureen had other dreams. She applied herself to learning all the tricks of tailoring; she was quick and she was a natural with a needle. She had not walked the bullock path seven kilometres daily to school for nothing and while she learned tailoring during her four year apprenticeship she dreamed of a life beyond Port Macquarie. It had already been planned that she would

be a good marital match for ‘the boy next door’ but, with her certificate finally under her belt, Maureen announced to her parents and two brothers that she was off to Sydney. “I just knew there was more for me in the world at that stage,” says Maureen. Her mother was horrified, and no doubt saddened to have her pretty, clever daughter leave the family farm. “She would not speak to me,” says Maureen, laughing now, though at the time it was painful. “She turned my photo to the wall and it was some years before she would forgive me. “But Dad knew I had a sense of adventure.” Maureen pauses, and reflects, looking over to the old buildings that dot the grounds. “I had a wonderful life. It’s been an adventure and I would not change a thing,” she says. Like Jack of Beanstalk fame, Maureen paid for her first adventure by selling a jersey calf born to the cow her Dad had given her. “I was young and stupid,” she laughs. “I knew nothing of the world. “But with the 16 pounds from the sale of the calf, I was on a steam train to Sydney.

“I arrived at Central Station with my battered old suitcase and thought ‘where do I go from here’. So she asked ‘a beautiful policeman’ she had spotted on the platform. “I was 17. And here I was, telling a lovely policeman that I had just arrived from Port Macquarie and needed accommodation and a job,” she says. “I can only imagine what he thought. He bought a Sydney Morning Herald and I found lodging in a boarding house in Kings Cross of all places, and a job as a men’s tailor.” Here, her training came to the fore and she added to it, learning more about design and garment making. She was attending night school at East Sydney Tech and Maureen quickly moved up; was put in charge and not long after was drawing a man’s wage. “But I still felt there had to be more than working in heavy worsted fabrics. I wanted to move into women’s clothing.” “I wanted to travel.” And so, though still a teenager, Maureen found herself in France, and later the UK, working for and learning with fashion houses such as Hartnell and Chanel. “My earlier training had taught me everything about the process, from design to cutting patterns and the finished garment,” she said. • Continued Page 10

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson This week I’d like to provide you with some information on how Council makes decisions, so you can feel comfortable in the process under which I, as Mayor, and all Councillors work. Only last week we held our monthly Council meeting, which is the primary forum in which Councillors publicly make decisions on behalf of our community. There is often a lot of information to consider before making a decision, with recommendations prepared by staff considered and discussed, and questions asked of staff before each meeting. I would like to encourage all members of the public to attend a monthly meeting at some time to see first-hand how the decision making process works. There is also

the opportunity for any member of our community to make an address to Councillors during the meeting. This can be done by either speaking directly to an item on the agenda, or you can speak in what is known as the ‘public forum’, which is your opportunity to directly address Council on any issue that is of concern to you. Whilst sometimes these meetings can seem a little ‘dry’, they are a great way to experience Council in action. I assure you that there will be no decisions made behind closed doors, no mate’s favours handed out or any secret deals done. Decisions on development applications is one area on which I’ve had quite a bit of feedback. These can be very complex matters, and decisions cannot be made on the opinions of Councillors alone. If an application

pmhc.nsw.gov.au is refused there has to be a legally valid reason. In fact many decisions relating to development don’t even come before Council, these are made by staff within strict guidelines that are set by the relevant authorities and state legislation. Some development decisions (that have unresolved submissions or departures from standards) are not made by Council either, and these decisions are made by a Development Assessment Panel which is made up of independent representatives, as well as Council. I hope you have found this information useful, and I hope to see you at a Council meeting in the future. Until next week, Peta

Bush fire brigade celebrates its 75th By SUE PATERICK WHEN fire threatens the countryside the Dondingalong Bush Fire Brigade’s (DBFB) dedicated volunteers stand ready to save homes and lives with nothing but bravery, fire-front experience and a hose. These amazing men and women, who have defended my home on several occasions, have been risking life and limb to provide this valued service to the community for the past 75 years. To help celebrate this amazing anniversary, members past and present and the local community are asked to attend a celebration on Saturday, December 2, at the Kalateenee Recreational Reserve on Pipers Creek Road in Dondingalong. The fun kicks off at 10am and a barbeque lunch will be served at midday. The official part of the proceedings will begin at 1pm with the event expected to end about 2pm. Dondingalong Rural Bush Fire Brigade Captain, Steve Sproule, asked anyone with any memorabilia to please bring it along on the day.

Captain of the Dondingalong Rural Bush Fire Brigade, Steve Sproule, is looking forward to celebrating the brigade’s 75th anniversary Although the DBFB was officially founded in August 1981, a fire brigade has existed in the area since 1942. Members present at the first general meeting on December 1, 1942, were N S Butterfield (President), S Osborne, R Osborne, G Osborne, E R Battle, Noel Osborne, A Battle, N Davy, A E Wedlock and J E Gowing (Secretary). The DBFB is a member of the Rural Fire Service Lower North Coast Zone and is located 15 kilometres south-west of Kempsey in Division Two.

It has 70 members and 30 are active firefighters. Three members have been with the brigade since its inception and their dedication for over 30 years of service has been recognised with Long Service Awards. Once part of the Sherwood Rural Bush Fire Brigade until its closure, the DBFB operates from a two-bay tin shed at the Kalateenee Recreational Reserve. The old Sherwood shed has been relocated to Wittitrin to be used as a second fire station.

While both stations are owned by Kempsey Shire Council, a volunteer committee attached to the DBFB maintains them. Brigade Equipment includes a Cat 2 and Cat 9 at Dondingalong and a Cat 7 at Wittitrin. The Dondingalong Multi-Purpose Centre is also located on the one-hectare bush reserve and is utilised for community meetings, training and social activities. To become a volunteer member of the Rural Fire Service contact the Lower North Coast Zone on 6565 1964.

Palliative care survey is vital HAVE your say on palliative care in NSW: The NSW community is being asked to participate in a palliative care survey to ensure everyone receives the support and services they deserve at the end of life. Recently the NSW State Government released a consultation paper based on feedback from community roundtables held across NSW earlier this year. Providing quality palliative care services to every resident of NSW is a key priority for the NSW Government. We are investing an extra $100 million over the next four years to provide more tailored, community-based palliative care services, on top of the approximately $210 million already spent each year. We are listening carefully to the community’s views on where and how palliative care services can be improved so that we have a strong plan for the future. The consultation paper and feedback from the survey will inform a new palliative and end-oflife care policy in NSW. The survey will only take about 10 minutes so I strongly urge everyone to take this opportunity to have their say. The NSW Health Palliative Care Roundtables Consultation Paper and survey can be viewed

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

Federal Member for Cowper

THE Coalition Government’s recently announced child care reforms will deliver more support for families right across Australia and the Mid North Coast. With an estimated 1.15 million families accessing childcare in 2018, it is important that we give families notice of changes to the child care system. Under the government’s changes, nearly one million Australian families will be better off. Families are the backbone of our society and we understand that, every day, parents are making choices in the best interest of their family. That’s why we are investing an additional $2.5 billion in early childhood education and care. The changes will introduce a better targeted activity test to ensure taxpayer subsidised child care places are targeted to those families who depend on it in order to work, or be able to work additional hours. In addition, those families struggling the most will receive the largest benefit, with the base subsidy increasing from 72 per cent to 85 per cent for the more than 370,000 families with a household income of $65,000 or less. Low and middle income families earning up to $185,000 a year will also no longer be limited by a $7,613 annual cap.

Don’t want to take ‘hi’ road

HAVE you ever used ‘hi’ as a form of greeting? I thought about hi and I can say without contradiction I have never used hi. Probably somebody will try to test me on this. I don’t have anything against hi. I have just never used it. I thought about hi a few weeks ago when a woman on television went into a veterinarian’s store, carrying a dog, and said hello to the veterinarian. He said hi in response. Several years ago I conducted my own experiment when I said hello to everyone I passed on an early-morning walk. Every person in response said hi. I also discovered people were more inclined to respond in the morning than the afternoon. I don’t know why. But I do know hi had some connection with Davy Crockett, that backwoodsman who was born in 1786 and died at the Alamo on March 6, 1836, aged 49. My big dictionary found some connection between hi and hy, “A word of greeting, chiefly north American”. So that’s why I haven’t used it. Anyway, the big dictionary (Oxford in response to many questions) refers to the United States on many occasions. The first reference the big dictionary had was

LAURIE BARBER

in 805 in an old English text. In 1862 when a person said “up galloped an Indian on his pony with his saluting hi”. I know, I know, an Indian would have difficulty galloping if he didn’t have a pony, but the woman who said this, Mrs Miriam Davis Colt, is dead now so I can’t discuss this with her. But she said it was a “thrilling account”. The term hi became known as an abbreviation of words such as hello or hullo, or even hallo. Did you know that when Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone he let out a cry and it was allegedly hi. I wasn’t around at the time, but that’s what they tell me. Hi was apparently a contraction of hello or something similar. I think he intended to say ahoy – maybe he did. Thomas Edison allegedly used the same term, or was it hello? Telephone operators for years became known as hello girls.

my

Samuel Johnson in his 1755, dictionary sees some similarities between hi and hey. You asked about Davy Crockett. The word hi was used in a book called the Sketches and Eccentricities of Colonel Davy Crockett (they called him David) published in 1833. Crockett was unhappy about some of the comments but I don’t know if hi was one of them. Crockett was a fairly belligerent person. This was some time before Bell and Edison became known. They say that hi in some places gave way to them. Hi has been used in many other locations. For instance, it was used in a BBC radio play called Hi De Hi. Some jazz bands in the USA used hi de ho. Hi has come down through the years as a form of greeting. Regrettably, it seems to be here to stay. The American Webster dictionary says hi is a British exclamation “used to attract attention”. The Australian Macquarie says it is an exclamation. Allow me to tell you about a man who saw “hell” as a key part of hello. He wanted people to change from hello to use the word heaveno. I don’t think they took much notice of him. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

...be like Cristina in the Hastings and Macleay Since 1995

Cristina Murphy has worked as a CAREGiver, firstly in the disability sector and for the past 15 plus years in the field of aged care. Here is part of Cristina’s story; ……Could you be like Cristina? “Working in the aged care sector is my passion! I can’t imagine doing anything else; because I find it really rewarding. I can honestly say it is my opportunity to give back, I love helping families who are struggling to deal with caring for an elderly family member and after time, I often, feel like and get treated like part of the family. I look forward to seeing each and every one of my clients and their beautiful smiles are a wonderful reward!” “As a CAREGiver with Home Instead Senior Care on The Mid North Coast in New South Wales, I have the added pleasure of working with clients who wish to continue living independently at home in familiar surroundings. Being able to stay in their own homes is a huge benefit for the clients, generally keeping them healthier for longer and enabling them to celebrate more milestones and continue making more beautiful memories. Many clients start to feel quite disabled as they get older, I love to respectfully teach them new tricks to make everyday tasks quicker and easier, yet maintaining their independence. Essentially, I treat my clients with the love and respect that I would want someone to show if they were to care for a family member of my own.”

Cristina Murphy

“It is imperative to have a fantastic communication and support network behind me to fulfil my role as a CAREGiver, Rod Lewis and Scott Marsh, franchisees of Home Instead Senior Care and the office team provide a service and support network that is second to none! CAREGivers and clients alike are always kept in the loop, if there are any changes or feedback we are notified immediately. It really is a bonus to do the job I love and work for a company who understand that great communication and feedback are crucial to giving great care to our beautiful clients.

Scott Marsh from Home Instead Senior Care said, “we are really pleased to have such a wonderful team of people like Cristina all working together to support Seniors throughout the Mid North Coast. As our organisation is expanding rapidly, we are now looking to find more people just like Cristina who was just awarded ‘CAREGiver of the Quarter’ to work with us and continue to deliver the very best in-Home Care services.”

Macbeth gets the AC/DC treatment • From Page 1 So he rewrote it, except for the well-known bits. “Macbeth will resonate with anyone who likes Game of Thrones,” he said. When friend and former English teacher, Rob McAulay, suggested the play be performed to AC/DC, Chris’ dream really came together. “The songs are working really well,” he said. “It’s a Long Way to the Top really fits Macbeth who wants to be King of Scotland and Highway to Hell works too because he ends up in hell.” A live band will perform the music complete

with bagpipes. Members of the band are Rob McAulay, students Paige Campbell, Claire Robinson and members of the Clan Macleay Pipe and Drums. Student Oscar Kerr, who is playing Macbeth and likes AC/DC, is finding the play fun and educational. “I’d never read it before and it will certainly help in our English exams,” he said. One of the three witches, Jo-Lee Booth, hadn’t read the play before either but she likes the modern version and grew up listening to AC/ DC. Another witch, Ashleigh Coira, likes the play and the backing music too and like Oscar she feels it will now be easy to pass the exams. The last witch, Tiger-Lily Squires, reckons Macbeth is great. “It’s dark and dramatic,” she said. The first performance of Macbeth will be a matinée for schools-only to be held on Wednesday November 29 at midday in the Kempsey High School Hall in Sea Street. The cost is $5 per person and Chris said other schools wanting to attend should contact the school on 6262 6166. Performances for the general public will be held on Friday, December 1, and Saturday, December 2. Both shows begin at 7pm. The cost for the Friday night is $25 because it includes refreshments from the high school’s hospitality facility the Red Onion Café. The cost of Saturday’s performance is $15 and it is BYO. Maureen not slowing down • From Page 6 “I was a bit of a prodigy while others were limited to just one facet such as buttons or seams.” In Montmartre on the Right Bank of Paris, the artist in Maureen began to emerge and she recalls the fun of hanging out with these colourful bohemian and liberated types, while still perfecting her own creations in fabric, and with a particular interest in bridal wear. “France was an exciting time and I had a lot of fun,” she says. “We would sit out on the street in outdoor cafes. At that stage I had barely seen a café let along sat on the street,” she laughs. Laughter is never far away when you are chatting to Maureen. “But finally, I felt I had seen enough and decided to return home,” she says. ‘Home’ meant a commute at times between Port Macquarie and Sydney where she worked, and, in 1956 on a blind date, met her husband Eric. Encouraged by Eric, Maureen took premises in Bayswater Road in upmarket Rushcutters Bay and began her couture wedding gown business; designing and stitching for the wellheeled, eventually employing a dozen people and making frequent overseas trips to France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Denmark and Japan to source exclusive materials for her wealthy clientele. With the bridal business booming, Eric resigned from his job to join his wife in an administrative role. In 1971, at the height of her success, the family returned to Port Macquarie where Maureen nursed her ill father until his death six years later. For the people of Port Macquarie, Maureen was ‘a godsend’ and orders for wedding gowns and beautifully cut dresses kept her busy until, following Eric’s death in 1987, Maureen decided it was time for her to retire and in 1989 she wound up the business and sold the family home to move once again to her current residence. In 1971, against opposition from shopkeepers who felt their business would be threatened,

Maureen Cooke - 87 and still very active Maureen had initiated the Sunday markets on the Hastings River Drive site where they still run today. From five stalls to a peak of 120 stands, the markets have settled to around 60 stalls while other heritage buildings have been moved to the site and various tenants taken up residence in the shade of the gums trees. From here, Maureen enjoys her active life; attending art classes, acting as a celebrant to ‘hatch, match and dispatch’; teaching philosophy from the little heritage school house; making visits to folk in hospital and nursing homes; playing an integral role in the organisation of the Sunday markets and beginning each day at 5.30am with a workout session at Curves. “I am both the oldest member and the longest registered member of Curves,” says Maureen proudly. “No. There is never a day when I have nothing to do. “If there was, I could probably get around to one of the many books I want to read,” she laughs. And the interview is over because Maureen has some painting to finish and there is an upcoming wedding to prepare for. And probably a million other things to do because that is the way this 87-year-old likes it.

COME and see what’s different at this Sunday’s annual sell-out concert that will kick-start the Christmas mood. The Sing Along Messiah has been an annual highlight for many residents in the Port Macquarie region and it’s not hard to see why. “Mendel’s Messiah is always performed around Easter or Christmas time and the hall we perform it in gets packed every year,” said Adele Miles, event Coordinator for the Hastings Choristers. “What’s different about this year is that we are having a workshop the day before the concert so that people who have never sang it before can learn it and perform it the next day.” It’s not just the performers on stage who will be singing. “Everyone gets involved in the concert,” said Adele. “We are going to put the words up on the big screen as well, so anybody can sing along in the audience if they want to, or they can just listen and enjoy the music. It’s very free and easy.” The Sunday afternoon concert will go for an hour and a half and will include 15 choruses from the Messiah, making it much more compact than Mendel’s two and a half hour composition. “The most popular choruses are of course ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘For unto us a child is born’,” said Adele. “John Thomson is one of our local soloists and he will be singing some solo lines in

between choruses and he is a really great singer. We also have our very talented Heather Moen who is a well-known organist and has done the Messiah many times. We have some really great local singers so I think people will be blown away with the concert.” The audience will watch more than 70 people perform on stage, making it a powerful performance that will fill the whole room. “It will be a great big powerful sound in the church,” Adele explained. “It’s also always just been a concert that people know really well. One lady who has registered for the workshop says it’s the seventh time she’s performed the Messiah, and every time we perform it we get a huge audience and it gets packed out. People just really love it and especially around Christmas time it’s just something that people really love. “You don’t have to be religious as well to be inspired by the music.” Don’t miss out on the concert of the year on Sunday (November 26) at 2pm, finishing at 3.30pm at the St Agnes Catholic Church, Hay Street, Port Macquarie. Concert tickets will be available at the door or through the Glasshouse Box Office on 6581 8888 or visit www.glasshouse.org.au (transaction fees may apply). Adult tickets are $20 and school children just $10. For more information phone Adele on 0407 480 750 or Kerryn on 0422 369 866.

Wauchope refugee concert FOTSUN is

almost here

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC WAUCHOPE has attracted an internationally renowned singer for a local fundraising concert. The Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group and Wauchope Arts Council have teamed up to bring the Mid North Coast an exciting concert that will not only please local musos, but also help refugees. “We’ve always tried to raise refugee awareness in the community and educate people so the concert is an extension of that,” said Krissa Wilkinson, founder of the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group. “We have been around for four years and have several hundred members from the Port Macquarie and Wauchope area.” Baltimore singer and songwriter Sonia Rutstein, (pictured) known as ‘SONiA disappear fear’, will be headlining the local fundraising concert, joined by popular local musician Helen Mottee who will open the show. “Sonia is a peace activist primarily,” Krissa said. “But most people who are displaced in the world are displaced by war and conflict, so whether its Syria or Afghanistan, that’s what has driven people out of their homes. Sonia’s an outstanding musician but she also plays music and writes songs with an important social message. “Helen is a perfect fit because she is a refugee advocate who has actually lived in Hong Kong for years and has worked with refugees on the Thai/Burma border. We call her our local Carole King. She will be playing the beautiful grand piano in the arts hall and she writes all these brilliant songs about the plight of refugees. She’s one of my absolute favourite local musicians. It’s going to be a fabulous night.” All money raised from the concert and a raffle will go to the Sanctuary Australia Foundation, which sponsors and assists refugees who are in

desperate situations overseas. It was founded in 1988 by Sue and Peter Hallam, from Coffs Harbour. “What a lot of people don’t realise is refugees who are allowed to settle here have very difficult lives and they are dependent on the kindness of strangers,” said Krissa. The Wauchope Arts Fundraising Concert is

on Friday, December 8, at the Wauchope Arts Hall, Oxley Lane, from 6.30pm. The Mid North Coast Refugee Support group are also having a meeting on Saturday December 2 at 10am at the Wauchope Arts Hall. Visit the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group Facebook Page for more information about the group.

SOME great entertainers are about to touch down in Port Macquarie for the annual Festival of the Sun music extravaganza. Locals, Mild West, the Triple J Unearthed winner, will be part of the line-up on December 7-9. From the mid north coast this three-piece alternative rock group formed in 2017 and have quickly established themselves and their unique sound that is super moody and cinematic - a welcome treat for the sell-out crowd this year. Also joining the 2017 bill is Imbi The Girl*. FOTSUN has organised some extra initiatives for patrons this year including the PLAY SAFE VIP area. Festival goers simply need to pee into a cup to receive entry into this exclusive area. This interesting entry fee may raise some eyebrows, however it’s all in aid of keeping festival goers sexually safe by testing for STIs. STIs are a major issue for young people in NSW. There is a lack of young people getting tested and this could be as a result of the misconceptions of cost, time and of course, the feeling of embarrassment. PASH will also be there to assist PLAY SAFE throughout the weekend offering additional assistance and consultations to punters. Inside the area, patrons will find the ultimate chill out zone complete with glitter bar, additional clean toilets and the captain’s favourite, free phone charging stations! University of Newcastle will also be presenting the FOTSUN creative workshop space where for no extra cost, festival goers can kick back on the couch, get creative with workshops to make your Spacey costumes and access an old Skool offline message board, all within view of the main stage.

Aged Care Information across the Mid North Coast NSW Home Instead Senior Care Mid North Coast With Australia’s fast-growing Ageing population there is more and more demand on services and information for Seniors every week, never more so like the concentration found in coastal and regional areas where people have moved to for their Senior years to enjoy retirement. Opening their first office in Port Macquarie in October 2015, followed by a drop-in information centre at Belgrave Street in Kempsey in July 2017, Home Instead Senior Care Mid North Coast Owners Rod lewis and Scott Marsh are now planning to open a drop-in point in Forster/ Tuncurry early in 2018.

Whilst Home Instead Senior Care Mid North Coast is becoming more and more widely known and renowned throughout the Mid North Coast for providing This new Ageing Information Centre to be located in the Forster/ Tuncurry area responsive and reliable personalised services as an approved provider of whilst still in the planning stages, will create yet another easily accessible infor- Government Subsidised Home Care packages, Scott Marsh says “there are still mation centre on the Mid North Coast and will also be of benefit to those living many people that have not yet begun the journey of getting much needed help or know how to go about accessing the information on getting help for Seniors in Taree. The concept of the Ageing Information Centre/ Access Point is proving to be to remain living independently in their own home. Whether this help is via extremely helpful to Seniors and their Carers and families’ simply because they the Australian Government’s Home Care Package initiative or help for those are making personal face to face conversations and getting the right type of people that may not qualify for this initiative or the NDIS program, at Home Instead we are able to also provide help for people who for whatever their advice with Ageing matters plain and simple. reason wish to not use these programs and access private services.” Rod Lewis says “the Australian Government has through the development of the My Aged Care contact centre and website, made information about help All are welcome to come to Home Instead and ask for assistance in finding out and options more accessible to all Australians on the matters of ageing. Whilst what service options may be available to them. Scott says, “we pride ourselves we live in an ever-evolving communication and digital age, not everyone in our on being transparent and ethical in business and both Rod Lewis, myself and all of our Team members genuinely hold a passion for helping people from all communities has access to, or the ability to utilise these walks and that is why we are moving our business operation away from the opportunities to access the information available through this agency”. industry’s traditional model of ‘just an office’ hidden from public view to a drop in centre.” Home Instead Senior Care on the Mid North Coast has this year become an approved provider of the Government Subsidised Home Care Packages that are available to older Australians when they are no longer able to manage the everyday things in their own homes that most of us take for granted. These packages provide assistance with everything from Domestic assistance through to transport to shopping and appointments, personal care and socialisation. “Traditionally a private ‘fee for service’, Home Instead’s high quality support for Seniors, we are now able to offer our services to all Seniors in our communities that are in need of help”said Scott. Currently supporting Seniors across the Mid North Coast , we are available to speak with on the phone at any time, every day of the year 02 6583 9944.

Things to ask when choosing a Home Care Package Provider • How much is your Administration and or Management fee? • Do you have local workers in my area? • Can I contact you any day any time if I need to? • Will I see the same Carers over time or have lots of different people? • What exit fee do you charge if I leave your service and how much do I have to pay towards the package? • Am I able to decide the times and days I needservice or do I have to fit in with your rosters? • Where is your office located when I telephone for help - are you in my area and happy to visit me to discuss things?

Major upgrade for Eden Street sports fields KEMPSEY Saints Football Club has secured $150,000 in funding from the NSW Government to deliver better community facilities. Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said that the Asian Cup Legacy Fund will help improve facilities at the Eden St sport grounds. “Last year Kempsey Saints Football Club had its largest registration of 36 teams with nearly 400 players, and improving facilities will help to increase participation in football. In particular the

Club has a growing number of female and indigenous players,” Mrs Pavey said. “The club will use the funding to upgrade field lighting at Eden Street Sporting Fields, increasing potential playing time for the club’s growing membership. Through the allocation of surplus funding from the elite level Asian Cup in 2015 to community football, it ensures that we continue to see Australia succeeding on the international stage, while getting kids more active at the same time.”

RIPPLING with muscle and snorting fury, huge bucking bulls and their fearless riders will do battle at Kempsey Showground this Saturday November 25 - at the annual Blue Moon Charity Bull Ride. Brought to you by Blue Moon Bull Riding and Ray White Rural Kempsey, the Blue Moon Charity Bull Ride features the best of the best champion bulls and professional riders from across Australia. A few of these brave men have just competed in bull riding world finals in Las Vegas. The Richardson brothers, Lachlan, Cliff and Eric, are just some of the well-known bull riders supporting this exciting event. All money raised goes to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Since the Charity Bull Ride began in 2012 it has raised an amazing $38,500, with $10,000 raised at last year’s event. One of the organisers from Blue Moon Bull Riding, Pete Farley, was once a champion bull rider until a training accident at the family farm in Aldavilla saw him airlifted to Sydney in a serious condition. So the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is an important charity to Pete because they helped save his life. “It could happen to anyone,” he said. Born and bred in the Macleay Valley, Pete comes from a family of bull-riding champions who all grew up farming at Aldavilla and Pola Creek. Along with his brothers, Jared and Denny and Dad Paul, Pete’s family have each amassed a string of titles such as Australian Champion, Australian National Finals Champion, and 10 World Qualifier titles. Pete rode bulls in Brazil, Mexico, the USA, Canada and Australia and loved the dangerous and challenging sport.

Queensland cowboy Sonny Schafferius hangs on at last year’s Bull Moon Charity Bull Ride. Photo: Courtesy of Pat Farley The highlight of his career was competing in three world finals. However, his accident made him see life differently because he was forced to retire at 22. His family still breed bucking bulls with the use of genetics, but for the past six years Pete has concentrated on a new career making fancy leather belts for riders. He still remembers riding a bucking bull can

seem like the longest eight seconds of your life. “You try not to think about anything,” Pete said. “It’s only a short time but it can take forever.” Since he was a kid Pete and his brothers just worked on their reactions and tried not to think too much about injuries and what could go wrong. “We taught ourselves not to think but to
