Big boys’ toys! By SUE PATERICK
OVER 100 prime movers will rumble through town this Saturday, October 14, when the North Coast Trucking Social Club holds the annual Kempsey Truck Show. This year marks the truck show’s 40th anniversary. It was first held to help raise funds for local charities throughout the Macleay Valley. Over $10,000 was raised at last year’s show and trucking club president, Chris Slocombe, said they hoped to raise $15,000 this year. The fun kicks off at 9.30am with a street procession from South Street in the South Kempsey Industrial Estate. With the deep resonance of air horns and the whoosh of air brakes, these shining big rigs will then make their way through Kempsey to the Kempsey Showground in Sea Street. There will be raffles, a tarp rolling contest, a tug-of-war, charity auction, trade displays, market stalls, a static-truck light display, an auction, and trophies will be presented. Keep the children happy with amusement rides, a jumping castle and train rides. For children of all ages, what is said to be the world’s fastest truck - The Bandag Bullet - will be also be doing burnouts and there will be a raffle offering three chances for a joy ride. Food will be available including a barbeque and a bar, but there is no BYO. • Continued Page 6

Port Macquarie Airport to get $7.5m upgrade
Alison Neale, Diane Pope and Robert Denham have welcomed ‘Maddy’, the Orange Sky laundry van paid for by the Port Macquarie and surrounding community through fundraising by Make A Difference (MAD)
‘Maddy’ on the road Launch of mobile laundry for homeless
By BARBARA DYER MOVIES have been made about laundromats. They have many times been the focus of community gatherings; a hub where people meet and, with the luxury of time while the washing swishes and the dryers spin clothes dry, friendships have been struck up. Perhaps even, the odd romance. While romance might not be what comes to mind when Orange Sky Australia launched its new mobile laundry in Laurieton last week, certainly community hub, meeting place, social support and friendship will be a spin-off for those who use this free service. Orange Sky Australia launched the van to provide free washing and drying for people doing it tough across the mid-north coast region and will service the area from Kempsey to Laurieton. The service will offer free laundry and a platform for conversations for people experiencing homelessness across various communities in the region. The new laundry van has a name – Maddy. This comes from the Making A Difference (MAD) organisation which was founded in Port Macquarie by Erin Denham, with the
installation of an Orange Sky Laundry, the group’s first project and one which they were amazingly successful in raising funding for. Maddy is the 17th of its kind in Orange Sky’s national fleet, with three shower vans also on the road. The launch of the van was made possible by the fundraising efforts of Make a Difference Port Macquarie and MAD PMQ founder Erin Denham said the team was excited to see their dream become a reality. “We cannot wait for the van to start its free washing service between Kempsey and Taree,” Erin said. “This is a unique service that will work alongside existing welfare services to help restore dignity and respect back into the lives of our friends on the streets.” Store Executive Manager at The Good Guys Port Macquarie, Tony Green, said he was delighted to see a new Orange Sky van headed for the region. “Nic and Lucas, (Orange Sky co-founders, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett) and their amazing family of volunteers, truly personify what it means to be good guys, and my team at The Good Guys Port Macquarie is looking forward to getting involved with the van on a local level,” Tony said. “The Good Guys is a proud national partner

of Orange Sky, and together, we aim to ‘Do Good and Strengthen Local Communities’.” Manager of Service Operations (NSW & ACT) Maz Dargan said she was excited to extend Orange Sky’s reach further across the state. “Since Orange Sky kicked off in October 2014, we have been continually blown away by the support we’ve received and how well the vans have been integrated into a range of communities,” she said. “This is the fifth laundry van to be launched in New South Wales, and we can’t wait for Maddy to start making an impact across the mid-north coast region.” While laundry is what Orange Sky does best, Maz said it was the conversations that would make the biggest impact. “Our six orange chairs are the most important part of our service. It’s where our friends who attend our shifts have the opportunity to build relationships with volunteers through genuine and non-judgmental conversations,’’ she said. “It will help to provide people with a sense of connection back to their own communities.” Orange Sky co-founders, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett, were named 2016 Young Australians of the Year for their work in establishing the organisation
LOCALS and visitors can look forward to a superior airport experience with the Port Macquarie Airport Terminal Building Upgrade project reaching its first milestone. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has developed a detailed concept for a $7.5 million upgrade which is now available for viewing on Council’s website. Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the NSW Government is proud to invest $5 million for the upgrade of the Port Macquarie Airport Terminal. “This is an important piece of visitor infrastructure and for many people will be the first impression of the Hastings as people fly into our beautiful area,” Mrs Williams said. “We are committed to funding infrastructure projects that make regional locations more attractive places to live, work and travel. This upgrade will create more opportunities for investment in the Port Macquarie region and boost the local economy.” The current terminal building was constructed in 1994, and the upgrade is required to cater for increased passenger numbers, to improve the standard of current facilities, and provide an improved airport experience that is consistent with other regional airports, and supports our standing as a tourist destination of choice. Mayor Peta Pinson said the community will soon enjoy a greatly improved facility at this key gateway to the region. “The upgrade will double the existing floor space, increase our service capability and provide a more contemporary, comfortable and efficient facility for passengers and other airport visitors,” Ms Pinson said. Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said the progress was an excellent outcome for Port Macquarie. “The travelling public expect high-quality facilities, and this upgrade will ensure a great experience in Port Macquarie that lives up to their expectations in a modern regional city,” Mr Hartsuyker said. The upgrade to the terminal building follows a ‘strategic concept’ that was developed in late 2016 to support grant applications. Council subsequently received $5m in NSW Government funding through the Restart NSW Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund and $1.25m in Australian Government funding through the Community Development Grants Programme. Council will contribute $1.25m to the upgrade through the Airport Reserve. Final completion of the detailed design and related approvals is expected to occur in early 2018, with a construction tender being advertised soon after. Construction is expected to commence in 2018. Airport operations will continue as normal during this period.

Government is winding back ocean protection
I’M sure Port Macquarie residents all would agree that the death of the beautiful 18-tonne whale on Nobbys Beach was a most distressing sight to see. The poor creature had been trapped in fishing nets. How long he struggled to free himself we don’t know. We can except to see more of these tragedies as the Australian Government is considering cutting the area of ocean Australia protects by 50 per cent. These changes will make Australia the world leader in winding back protection for the oceans. In the Coral Sea alone the area placed in Marine National Parks has been halved. The same goes for Marion Reef. Even Osprey Reef, one of the top dive sites in the world, has had half
its area removed from the Marine National Park. Shark and Vema Reefs have been taken out of the Marine National Park area altogether. Midwater trawling is to be reintroduced and it will now be possible for long lining to start at the southern tip of the Coral Sea reserve and continue all the way to the northern boundary. No Government ever has taken this many hectares out of conservation before. It’s the largest backward step in areas under conservation in history. These protections were put in place five years ago by the then Environment Minister Tony Burke. Please don’t let this irresponsible tragedy happen - it’s up to you. Beverley Sharpe Port Macquarie
THANK you for the timely article about the problems caused by discarded fishing line (and a special thank you to Shalise Leesfield). As wildlife rescuers we find discarded fishing line is a major problem to our wildlife, and not just sea animals and birds. We’ve even had to deal with a kangaroo at Little Bay picnic area (Arakoon) with a fish hook and mono-filament line caught in its mouth. Thankfully, after a light dose of sedative we
were able to remove the hook and line from her lip! It seems so basic for fisher-people to dispose of their discarded fishing tackle properly, but there are always some that are quite happy to leave the stuff on rocks and grassy areas for our wildlife to investigate and get caught up in! I can only encourage people to use the many bins provided or take it home! John Gorham South West Rocks

DOWN I WISH to say a huge thank you to Jaycar Port Macquarie for their continued dedicated response to sorting out problems with technology that us seniors seem to struggle with sometimes. At times the reward for them is no sale, but they still help. Recently, again I was helped out and I successfully completed the job and yes, they did have a sale and I gladly paid the bill. Thank you, again!

Thumbs Up TO Ammonite Inn, Richmond, Queensland. My wife took ill when on a coach tour and had to go to hospital. The staff there did everything possible to help us, even helped with the washing. Many thanks to them. If you are travelling in their area, please think about staying with them and supporting a small country motel.
TO the women who volunteer at the CWA tearooms on the Town Green. They not only serve a delicious Devonshire tea for a mere five dollars, while dispersing cheerful banter, they also accommodate groups with special needs with care and consideration. I look forward to more morning tea outings at their lovely rooms.

provide a voice for our local community in the Hastings and Macleay via YLI. There have been some amazing opportunities to help various groups, charities, businesses and individuals. YLI proudly supports as many community events as possible and looks forward to doing so for a long time to come. But… People, your expectations of what I can do for you are off the charts! We need to get a few things straight…I am not a bank and I don’t run a volunteer organisation. YLI is a small business with relatively high weekly overheads, providing a newspaper FREE to over 65,000 members of our community each week! I’m not able to print a paper each week and give it away. Can we please take note of the following rules of engagement? If you are not for profit organisation, charity or community group – we will help where we can with publicity but there are no guarantees – if you want guaranteed publicity you need to plan for and expect to pay for some of your advertising and publicity. If you are in business you need to have a marketing plan and budget in place… We can and will help you market your business but frankly, I’m not able to financially back your business with endless FREE advertising and editorial content; if you are going into business and want to get your message out there, you should pay the appropriate businesses to do that for you. Seriously folks, you can’t walk into my business and expect me to help you for FREE! Imagine if I wandered in and out of businesses around town and plucked products off the shelves willy nilly, as if it is my God-given right…I’d be done for theft!

I GET a great deal of pleasure out of helping others, always have, always will and it is probably the one thing I love equally least and most about my life and producing a weekly newspaper. Ironically my name Sandra means ‘helper of mankind’ – either my parents were psychic or I’ve unknowingly been conditioned to become that person? A good friend of mine always joked they’d got it wrong and it should mean – helper of needy men! Oops! I digress! From a really young age…about six years old I remember spending every spare minute I had helping my aunty, who lived next door with her twin baby girls. I’d help with the housework, baking, ironing, feeding, bathing and dressing the girls. Soon I was also helping our other neighbours and before long I was the babysitter for all the kids if our parents decided to party. At age eight I remember being left solely responsible for seven children (all aged six and under, four in nappies) for a weekend. Can you imagine if that happened today? DOCS would be on the doorstep in no time. Being helpful is a great attribute to have but genuinely caring enough and wanting to help other people comes at an enormous cost… mostly emotionally, mentally and physically – to be honest the financial cost is just too scary to consider! To put it in perspective, here’s one of the last things my mum shared with me before she died, 15 years ago. “You know Sandra, if you hadn’t had the men in your life that you have – you’d be a self-made millionairess by now!” Quote, unquote; thanks mum. Over the years the ‘people pleasing’ has paid off to some extent., I’ve always worked in customer service/sales roles in the hospitality, tourism, retail, medical and now media industries. I will go the extra mile to help people to the best of my ability. The flipside? I’m always open to the users and abusers that will take advantage of my generous nature. Over the last nine years my life has been dedicated to helping inform, educate and

Sue makes good scents By SUE PATERICK SUE’S soap stall is as colourful as a bed of spring flowers and smells so delightful it is impossible to walk past. Like bees, we are drawn to her gorgeous, creamy range of soaps that come in all shapes, patterns and sizes from flowers to hearts, cupcakes and star fish. As varied as the colours, effects and fragrances can be, Sue’s soap is all handmade and chemical free. When her children left the nest about eight years ago Sue Phillis found herself looking for something to do. It was while staying with her daughter that she saw a show on the television about how to make soap and she was hooked. “I thought, I love soap,” Sue said. “So I looked into it.” She found most of the information she needed to begin her new venture in books, but it was trial and error that created her wonderful range of soaps. “Making soap isn’t hard once you know how,” she said. “You have to weigh the oils and fragrances and get the measurements right, but once you have a good recipe it just works out.” For Sue making soap is a labour of love. While one batch of soap only takes an hour to make once you know what you’re doing, it takes four weeks to cure and air. So a good dollop of patience is
obviously key to the process too. Sue doesn’t know why she loves soap but she does, and it is clear to see because her soap looks good enough to eat. “Making soap is very creative,” she said. “You can use colours and fragrances and every batch is different.” For Sue making soap has become an addiction. She adores the variety. “When I turn a batch out of their moulds, I’m never sure how they will turn out,” she said. “And if I do something different and combine it with different fragrances or colours, that’s enjoyable.” Without giving away too many of her secrets, Sue uses delicious ingredients in her soaps like coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, goats’ milk, essential oils, therapeutic oils and a range of powders. Her soaps can be fragrant or nonfragrant and she admits her biggest seller is the fragrance-free goats’ milk soap, which is the one I buy. Sue has lived in the Macleay Valley for decades and likes the country atmosphere and the beaches. You will find her at the Kempsey Mall Markets each Thursday morning and at the fantastic Riverside Markets in Kempsey’s tranquil Riverside Park on the first Saturday of each month. “Handmade soap doesn’t have all the chemicals and most people find it beneficial for your skin,” Sue said.

Council’s invitation THIS month, residents are invited to attend Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Ordinary Meeting in Laurieton. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 18 starting at 5.30pm at the Laurieton School of Arts Hall, corner of Bold and Laurie Streets. Changing the venue for Council meetings forms part of the ‘Taking Council to the Community’ program, providing greater community access to meetings and engagement in Council’s decision-making processes. “We’re keen to ensure that all members of the community have access to meetings and engagement opportunities, and Councillor’s will continue to be available to receive feedback on important local matters,” said Mayor Peta Pinson. “Along with our community engagement meetings, holding Council Meetings in various locations allows for greater community access to address Council, and to hear discussions and decisions on matters affecting our community”.

Some of the sights and action from last year’s Kempsey Truck Show. The show returns this Saturday
Kempsey Truck Show gears up to celebrate its 40th anniversary • From Page 1 Gates open at the showground at 8am until late and the cost is $2 per person or a mere $5 for families. Prime movers are not only local, they are coming from Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane and Tamworth. And this sort of mateship is one of the main things Chris loves about being a truck driver. He thinks the other great bonus of driving the highways of Australia is seeing new places all day, every day. “I first started work in a timber mill and was stuck in one place all the time,” Chris said.
“So driving trucks is better because you get to see the country.” Founded in 1972 by a group of truck owners, drivers and friends with the aim of having social outings with family and friends, the North Coast Trucking Social Club’s vision soon became more altruistic. According to its Mission Statement, the club recognises what financial support the community needs and tries to help out whenever it can. So far it has raised a massive $315,000, plus over $130,000 to assist members and fellow drivers and their families in time of injury,
sickness and death. The idea of holding a fundraising weekend was adopted in the club’s early days. Over the years the specific event has taken various forms and been held at various locations, but always with outstanding success. This year’s Kempsey Truck Show promises to be just as popular and is a real community affair. Frederickton Public School is helping out at the showground’s canteen and the Australian Naval Cadets from South West Rocks are manning the gates for the day. Proud sponsors of this exciting event are
Power Torque and many other local businesses through donations and support and, as always, all the proceeds will go to a local charity. This year the major beneficiary is the Hastings Macleay Cancer Trust for the purchase of a chemotherapy Port-o-Cath infusion pump, which will help people undergoing treatment to continue their independence during therapy. For more information about the Kempsey Truck Show or to become a member check out the North Coast Trucking Social Club on Facebook.
Dry winters not that unusual “In the years which don’t appear, there was no rain.” 1871 - 23 mm; 1905 - 33; 1907 – 22; 1910 – 28; 1946 – 55; 1847 – 65; 1951 – 67; 1980 – 62; 1981 – 49; 2002 – 61; 2003 – 44; 2013 – 61; 2017 – 32. “Strangely, dry years seem to be almost consecutive. But the average is one year in 10,” notes Doug. “I think what this shows as far as predicting rainfall, is that the only consistency is the inconsistency. “And despite what people say, a long wet does not necessarily follow a long dry.” Doug’s background in local government prior to moving to Port Macquarie 20 years ago meant he took a ‘professional’ interest in the weather and particularly rainfall.
By BARBARA DYER
IT’S dry. At least that’s the word on the streets of Port Macquarie. A local weather observer, who just wants to be identified as ‘Doug’, started wondering just how dry is ‘dry’. He went back to 1871 to find out some interesting local weather statistics, with rainfall periods during the winter months July to September and found that dry winters are the norm rather than an unusual event for the mid north coast. “This data was taken from the Hill St Station until it closed in 2006 and then from the Airport,” said Doug. “What we see is that it averages one dry year in 10.
“Then, as now, rainfall information helped the local council with bushfire planning procedures, water supply and expected usage,” he said. “People have always been obsessed with weather; it dictates people’s lives particularly in rural areas. Rain is big news and critical information for farmers. “Everyone talks about it; it’s a social icebreaker. It also changes the dynamics of bushfire season, for example, when there is no rain the bushfire season might start early.” According to Wikipedia, the first known rainfall records were kept by the Ancient Greeks around 500 B.C. People living in India began to record rainfall around 400 B.C. The readings were correlated against expected growth with precise standards set as to grain production. Each of the state storehouses were equipped with a

rain gauge to classify land for taxation purposes. In 1662, Christopher Wren created the first tipping-bucket rain gauge in Britain in collaboration with Robert Hooke. Hooke also designed a manual gauge with a funnel that made measurements throughout 1695. It was Richard Towneley who was the first to make systematic rainfall measurements over a period of 15 years from 1677 to 1694. The naturalist Gilbert White took measurements to determine the mean rainfall from 1779 to 1786, although it was his brotherin-law, Thomas Barker who made regular and meticulous measurements for 59 years, recording temperature, wind, barometric pressure, rainfall and clouds. He was able to demonstrate that the average rainfall varied greatly from year to year with little discernible pattern.

Car boot sale for 4LifeCare
Fundraiser for a great charity
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC HEAD on down to next week’s Spring Clean Car Boot Sale and find out how 4LifeCare & Training has been helping the local community. 4LifeCare & Training has been assisting the region’s most disadvantaged families and individuals through difficult financial challenges of daily life for almost 10 years. Now they are holding a Spring Clean Car Boot Sale to raise more funds for people in need and to raise awareness of their services. “We are a not-for-profit charity in Port Macquarie and we provide food parcels for families in need, and for people on low income. We help people who are escaping domestic violence, kids who have left home and so much more,” said Jan Eldridge, Administrative Officer at 4Life Care & Training Ltd. “We also have an op shop where we raise the money to buy the food for the food parcels.” Although this organisation has helped so many people across the Mid North Coast, many in the community still don’t know exactly who they are. “We’ve been around for 10 years but we have moved four times. We started out at the basement of my house and we’ve just gone bigger and bigger as the need has arisen,” explained Jan. “This is the first time we’ve done a car boot sale and we are really just trying to involve the community so that they know that we exist. “We want them to know that we are here to
help anyone that is in need. “We’ve had a family come to us because their house had burnt down, so we let them go through and choose whatever clothes they wanted from the op shop and we paid their electricity bill. “We had one gentlemen who we helped in the past and because we had helped him get back on his feet, he now has his own business and donates stuff back to us.” 4LifeCare & Training currently has more than 2000 families on their books and have also started an outlet in Kempsey and are looking at starting another in Taree. Come along to the Spring Clean Car Boot Sale and enjoy a sausage sizzle and soft drink and check out the car boots filled with treasures on Thursday, October 19 from 10am-2pm in the grassed area at the back of unit 11 in the Bellbowrie Park premises. This Donation Gift Recipient-approved charity relies on the generosity of businesses, volunteers and the community to provide food parcels, its Op Shops (Bellbowrie Business Park, Port Macquarie and in Clyde Street, Kempsey) and its Living Skills training courses which assists people in life skill courses such as cooking classes. Bookings for a car space can be made by phoning the Port Macquarie office on 6584 2951. Find out more by visiting care.4life.org.au. Critical issues to consider when buying an Investment Property Before you buy an investment property it pays to have a think about not only where to hold the property, but the future tax implications. Here’s some of the more important things to consider; 1. Legal ownership. Consideration on deciding who owns the property also needs to be balanced against the associated costs of the ownership structure. This can include trusts, companies and SMSF’s. All will have different tax treatments and SMSF’s have additional regulations that need to be adhered to so it’s important to know all the facts from a SMSF Specialist Advisor if you’re looking to buy with your SMSF. 2. Finance Structure. Interest expense is only deductible to the extent the borrowed moneys are used for the investment property. Be wary of using redraw facilities which mix private and investment transactions. This will create an apportionment burden and could potently cost you lost interest deductions. Also be wary of home loan reduction schemes that increase the interest costs each year. These will attract the attention of the ATO due to its tax avoidance. 3. Land Tax – Land tax is a state tax and will vary depending on which state the property is purchased, so ensure you ask the question and monitor if you are likely to exceed the relevant states threshold. 4. Capital Gains Tax – Depending on the structure and how long the property has been held determines what CGT Concessions are available to you when you sell the investment. Take this into account when considering how long you intend to hold the property. Further if you mix the use of the property between your primary residence and as an investment property this can further effect the capital gains tax you pay. 5. GST – There’s different GST treatment on both the purchase and ongoing GST claims relating to the property. This can depend on a number of factors including on whether the property is new residential or commercial. You need to ensure the contracts are clear and your aware of your obligations. 6. Tax Benefits – Determining what costs are deductible and what expenses count towards the cost of the investment will depend on the purpose on which you purchase the property. If you are purchasing the property to develop rather than use to provide rental income this will have an effect how associated costs are treated and your tax on any gains. Tackling high cost of energy CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
THE Coalition Government remains committed to ensuring the availability and affordability of energy supplies across our region. We will not let the rising cost of power bills take any further toll on Australian families, businesses and jobs, these are our absolute priority. As part of the latest measures to ease pressure on the domestic gas supply, our government has secured a commitment from the east coast gas exporters that they will provide the gas for the expected shortfall identified by the energy regulator and competition watchdog in 2018. Labor has driven up the price of gas by approving exports without consideration to our domestic needs, as well as stopping the development of new gas reserves. Fortunately the Coalition Government is delivering on plans to clean up its mess. Those include supporting new gas exploration and development in the Budget and reforming pipeline markets plus continuing to call on the states to drop the moratoriums and restrictions that stop domestic gas flowing. The Coalition Government also remains committed to helping young Australians get off welfare and into work. Through the Youth Bonus Wage Subsidy as part of the Jobs PaTH program, we’ve been able to help 10,000 long-term unemployed young Aussies find a job and make sure they are positive contributors to both the economy and their local community. Breaking the cycle of welfare dependency by securing employment has a profound impact on not only the individual and their family, but it also reduces the burden on the Australian taxpayer by ensuring those that can work are working. Additionally, more than 9,300 young people have begun Employability Skills Training courses and more than 2100 internships have commenced.
Flexible school care funding MORE Support For Busy Families: More local working families will have access to flexible school care for their children, following the announcement that Lake Cathie Public School has been successful in their application for the NSW Government’s Before and After School Care Fund. Lake Cathie Public School has been awarded $30,000 and will be using the fund to establish an Out of School Hours Care service on its premises. It is estimated that 120 places will be created for children following the service’s establishment. Congratulations to the school for applying for a grant under the Before and After School Care Fund, a $20 million NSW Government initiative designed to create more places in out of school hours care programs across the state. This funding is welcome news for busy families who need the extra flexibility that before and after school care provides. This grant program is just another way the NSW Government is helping families access the childcare support that they need. For more information on the Before and After School Care Fund, visit the Department of Education website at www.dec.nsw.gov.au/ our-services/children-and-youth/out-of-hoursschool-care-grant. Honouring JPs For 50 Years Of Service:
I LOST a good friend recently. In the condolence messages that I saw one word stood out. That word was vale. We take friendships for granted. In good health, we sometimes talk about death as if it were something we needn’t worry about, at least for a long time. How many times have you heard a relative say something along the lines of “when you go…”? Or if the relative is talking about somebody who is really sick they usually suggest something along the lines of “if anything should happen to So and So…” Death is one of the words we hate to use, probably because it is so final. As children, we have a strong belief in our own immortality. Even as we grow older, death seems to be something that affects “other people”. It’s only when we start losing more of our friends that we realise time catches up with all of us. If we can find some other way of describing death we will. Some dictionaries in my possession say that vale relates to valley. They do not mention the death of a person. My big dictionary says vale relates to the declining years of a person’s age, but then it says vale relates to goodbye, farewell, adieu. To valedict is to bid farewell. So does

Last week I presented some of the state’s longest-serving Justices of the Peace (JP) with a certificate recognising 50 years of service. Together these men have 450 years experience of being JPs. It is a remarkable achievement to provide half a century of service as a JP, and one that deserves to be honoured. As JPs of 50 years, these nine wonderful men have played an important part in the legal system and in our community by helping hundreds of people at key moments in their lives, such as when they buy a house, access superannuation or go to court. There are nearly 95,000 JPs in NSW, together volunteering hundreds of thousands of hours to their communities and aiding the efficient functioning of our legal system. The NSW Government introduced commemorative certificates for 50 years of service as a JP in 2012.

THE smell of bushfires is something that every Australian is familiar with come summertime. With the early hot weather, the Mid North Coast has already faced bushfires this season which is a reminder to us all to be mindful and prepared. Due to a long dry spell, our region is currently at higher risk with the bushfire danger period being brought forward a month to September 1 this year. With this in mind, it is important you and your family have a bushfire survival plan in place in case of emergency. Discussing and planning with your family what you’ll do in case of a bushfire is essential and could save lives, as well as your home. Bushfires can occur unexpectedly and move fast - do the maths, there will never be as many fire trucks as houses - so it is important you are ready to act. There are also simple things you can do around the house to ensure you are prepared including; mowing lawns, clearing gutters and removing flammable materials from around your home. You can also download a guide that will help you develop a bush fire survival plan here: https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.

my
valediction. Valedictory is something like saying farewell and giving an oration at the seme time. Vale-dictum is to say farewell. I have yet to see a face pop up from the coffin, but I live in hope. I know a person who wants to be buried in a coffin, with a mobile phone. But will she have reception? Can you just imagine the scene in the church… Ivor Brown in his Book of Words described the bisyllabic word vale, from the Latin, as beautiful. John Ayto seems to describe it as an offshoot of the word meaning valley. Wilfred Funk goes a bit further. He says: “When the valedictorian has finished his speech he has said farewell. Many years ago I wrote a column piece about death and passing away. I said: A common euphemism for dying is “passing away”. That is a way of saying dying

without causing too much distress. My big dictionary has 11 pages devoted to the word pass. Euphemisms for death range from the serious to the ridiculous. Some are: Popped off; gone to the happy hunting grounds; met one’s maker; answered the call; no longer with us; given up the ghost; met the grim reaper; bought it; cashed in one’s chips; called it a day; settled one’s account; bit the dust; croaked; went feet first; turned up one’s toes; shuffled off. Some people in certain government positions have talked about collateral damage, wastage or negative outcomes, when trying to avoid stating the obvious. The Times in London once reported that a hospital had described a death as a “negative patient-care outcome”. The use of the simple word death to describe the cessation of life has been with us since as early as the year 888. But if you really have some friends that you haven’t seen for a long time, make the effort now. Be warned, however: If they say to you something like “you’re looking very well” that’s the time to start worrying. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Donna shares secrets By BARBARA DYER DONNA Clarke loves orchids. The president of the Macleay Valley Orchid Society is more than happy to talk and share her secrets about this much admired flower. Donna figures by telling all she knows as a grower, an exhibitor and a judge, she can help seed more interest locally in this exotic plant. Some enthusiasts might guard their growing secrets and try to throw you off the scent, Donna laughs. “Some people can be very top secret and won’t tell you anything,” she says. “They will turn up with a prolificallyflowering plant and will tell you they did it ‘this way’ but you think ‘No, I don’t think so’,” Donna laughs again. That’s the exception though in a society which draws a large and loyal following; attracted to these stunning stems, and eager to share both knowledge and friendship. They are flowers not known for their fragrance but that doesn’t matter. “We look at the shape of the flower, how many blooms on a stem and the colour,” says Donna. “We teach new members about staking – you’ve got to get that right – then there’s your diseases; your aphids and your mealy bugs that get into the bark. You have to address that.” Start Donna talking orchids and it’s delightful to hear her passion for the flowers her parents grow – mum Shirley is secretary of the Macleay Valley Orchid Society. “You’ve got your Dendrobiums (‘restaurant orchids’ which decorate tables in Thai restaurants) – that’s a good one for beginners; your Kingidiums (after botanist Sir George King known for his work with Indian orchids), Phalaenopsis sold in supermarkets, your

‘Stop Adani’ protest AN estimated 500 people from as far south as Taree and north to Macksville converged on Town Beach on Saturday afternoon to form the biggest human sign in Port Macquarie’s history. Another 800 people were at a similar event at Coffs Harbour. Gloucester also staged a Stop Adani event. The human sign spelt two words – ‘Stop Adani’. Adani is the billionaire Indian coal miner who wants to build the biggest coal mine in Australia’s history, a mega mine in north Queensland. The local event was coordinated by the Mid North Coast Stop Adani Alliance, hosted by Climate Change Australia Hastings, as part of a national day of action. Acting President of CCA-H, Harry Creamer, said the large turn-out showed the depth of opposition to the proposed project. “Nationally, 64 per cent of Australians oppose this mine,” Mr Creamer said.
Bonny Hills invitation
Donna Clarke and mum Shirley Lee find plenty to talk about in the family’s flourishing orchid house Vandas …. So many.” There are 30,000, actually, in the world’s largest family of flowering plants. “We bring them back from overseas in empty whisky bottles. Customs let us through with six bottles of stems,” explains Donna. The Macleay group meet every second Sunday at Kempsey Heights Bowling Club but this weekend is extra special. The Macleay Valley Orchid Society was
founded 30 years ago by a group including current treasurer George Wheeldon and this weekend, October 14-15, the public are invited to check out the flowers from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 9.30am to 3pm on Sunday, at the 30th Spring Show, at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club. There will be plenty of experienced orchid growers, like Donna, just bursting to tell you all their secrets.

OUR upgraded Airport terminal building: Last week I had the pleasure of viewing the concept plan for the $7.5 million upgrade to the Port Macquarie Airport Terminal Building. The existing terminal building is more than 23 years old, and with passenger numbers doubling in the last 10 years it is great to see the standard of facilities being improved so that we can provide an airport experience that is consistent with other regional airports, and support our standing as a tourist destination of choice. The upgrade will double the existing floor space, increase our service capability and provide a more contemporary, comfortable and efficient facility for passengers and other airport visitors. Council have worked closely with both state and federal governments in securing funding for the upgrade, and look forward to the finished product being delivered by the end of the 2018/2019 financial year. For more information and to view the concept plan visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/terminalupgrade. Next week is National Water Week: Water is our most precious natural resource, and as a community we are so lucky to have such a reliable, clean water supply. National Water Week is next week, and is a great reminder for us all to think about how we use water, and the water-saving measures we have in place around our homes. As part of Council’s ongoing commitment to water education, we’re offering FREE activities next week that you might like to be involved in. These include a Catchment to Tap Water Tour on Thursday, October 19 where you can take a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of our water facilities.Water Stories at the Library is a fun way for preschool-aged children to learn about water, and they will even meet ‘Whizzy the Waterdrop’. These story sessions will be held between October 16 and 18.

Golfers tee off for a great cause PORT Macquarie Women’s Golf Club will host a charity golf day later this month with the aim of supporting local women who have breast cancer. The club’s annual Pink Day traditionally supports women’s organisations and charities, but this year’s event, which coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will take on a special purpose. President Wendy Gordon said breast cancer was particularly relevant to the club’s members as the disease remains the most common cancer for women. “We were determined to show our support for women who have breast cancer, and what better way to do that than with a fundraiser for the local breast cancer service at Port Macquarie’s Mid North Coast Cancer Institute.” The club’s Pink Day will be held at Port Macquarie Golf Course on Friday, October 27, teeing off at 8.30am. While the lady golfers will be doing their best on the greens to raise funds, the club also hopes the community will throw its support behind the charity day and donate. “Our Pink Day is all about local women, local breast cancer patients and a local cancer service that provides world-class treatment. We can all make a difference, and thanks to our Pink Day, we will,” Ms Gordon said. The Mid North Coast Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist since 2003, Joanne Woodlands,
said the lady golfers’ support would mean the world to her patients. “One in eight women in our community will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85,” Ms Woodlands said. “It remains the most common cancer for women, but the outcomes after diagnosis are continually improving thanks to improved early detection, improved treatment options and public support for cancer research and cancer centres.” Risk facts for breast cancer include aging, family history, alcohol consumption and being overweight when post-menopausal. “We’ve come a long way in breast cancer treatment and diagnosis over the past decade,” Ms Woodlands said. “We now have more treatment options and support for women, which means they are living longer and with a better quality of life. “It also helps that the broader community wants to play its part, hosting fundraising events such as the Port Macquarie Women’s Golf Club Pink Day.” Further information about the Pink Day and how to support the fundraiser is available from club secretary Josie Mockford by phoning 0400 449 799.

Best performed winners of Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs were John Wells and Ken Ansley with +27, while the runners-up were Peter McLeod and Adolf Giacovani with +16. This week we have the usual Friday afternoon’s nominated pairs at 1pm, single entries will also be accepted and Wednesday afternoon single entry club select triples also at 1pm. Subject to numbers, commencing at 1pm on Saturday afternoon will be an open, nominated, three-bowl pairs event comprising two games of 14 ends which is being sponsored by Neil Hudson Electrical. Dress is casual. Visitors are always most welcome and encouraged to nominate for any of these events. A reminder that the nomination sheet is also now up for our very popular Pig Day which is scheduled for November 18. Pennant players please note the nomination sheet for 2018 is on the notice board.

Drift takes catamaran division SUNDAY’S fifth race of the Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s spring series was held in a gentle easterly with a run-out tide as the day slowly clouded in. The drizzly rain even held off until after the race when all the boats were packed away. In the catamaran division, Rob Barwick on Drift had a tussle with Dave Winter on Spica all race, with Drift eventually winning on yardstick by three minutes, but winning by only 48 seconds ahead of Spica on handicap. The monohull division was won on yardstick by Terry Howard in Ratz from Tony Walker in Deep Purple then Phil and
Blake Lillehagen in Elmo, who, despite unexpectedly broaching on one of the runs, were only 20 seconds ahead of Elsa and Simon Gandy in Flying Fish. Jane Cooper and Sharon Carney in Jupiter sailed well in their first race together as new skippers, but after a surprise capsize near the end left them too cold, they retired. Elmo sailed well enough to win on handicap, with Ratz second, only 18 seconds ahead of third-placed Flying Fish and Deep Purple in fouth. Next Sunday is race six of the spring series with a 2pm start. Simon Gandy is rostered on duty
Rob Barwick on Drift who won the catamaran division on both yardstick and handicap
Kempsey lures music fans Host of entertainment during 14th Slim Dusty Festival
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ONE of Kempsey’s major annual drawcards kicks off on Monday as the region opens its doors to thousands of visitors for the Slim Dusty Country Music Festival 10 year Family Reunion. “There will be several thousand people coming in for the performances across the festival this year,” said Michele Atkinson, Centre Manager at the Slim Dusty Centre. “It is great for the Macleay Valley because we advertise nationally through different forms of media. “The event draws a lot of overnight visitors and approximately half of the 300 caravans that stay at the Kempsey Showgrounds, stay anything up to an extension of five to seven days outside the festival.

“We do what is called a shop-a-docket promotion, where we ask everyone who is staying at the showground to place their shop-adockets into a barrel, and we draw prizes from it, but that is also for us to gauge how much has been spent in the region over the week. “We don’t get near 100 per cent of the dockets, but each year we have been consistently growing and last year it was around the $60,000 spent in just that five-day period, but that is only indicative. It would be a lot more than that because we don’t receive all of the dockets.” This year the festival is in its 14th year, but it’s the main event on the Saturday night that will be bringing some serious tourism to Kempsey. “At the moment we are getting people who are very interested because it’s the (late Slim Dusty) family reunion and we are getting the family all together again, from Joy (Slim’s wife) down to
grandchildren,” explained Michele. Although the Saturday night will surely be the climax of the weeklong festival, don’t miss out on all the entertainment and festivities during the week. “On Tuesday we have buskers all over the streets of the Kempsey CBD from 10am-3pm and they are really talented,” Michele said. “On the Wednesday we are doing the Nulla Nulla bus tour, the Thursday and Friday we have entertainment and ‘walk ups’, and the Friday night and Saturday night are the main entertainment days.” All of the entertainment will take place at the Kempsey Showground and anyone who is interested in busking and ‘walk ups’ is certainly welcome and encouraged to contact the centre. Join in the country music fun on Saturday, October 21 at the Kempsey Showground and
