The gloves are off By CHRISTINA PARKIN

Current Port Macquarie-Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling seeking re-election, rejected Ms Pinson’s road backlog claims. “The ‘Fit for the Future’ process was a NSW government process that was overseen by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART),” explained Mr Besseling. • Continued Page 3

BUCKLE-UP ratepayers, we are in for whiteknuckle ride. The upcoming local government elections are tipped to be one of the most brutal in recent history if the battle for the Port MacquarieHastings mayoralty is any indication. Already, high profile businesswoman Peta Pinson, has staked her claim on the top job at the September 10 elections with an early salvo at sitting councillors. Ms Pinson opened her mayoral campaign late last month alleging that the current council planned a 52.4% rate rise and then called for council support of a tidal pool at Port Macquarie (see story Page 6). She has now followed this up with a claim that the current council has ‘fixed their books instead of our roads’. Ms Pinson has claimed: “Port Macquarie Hastings Council have reduced their road infrastructure backlog by a staggering $133.7 million in the 2014/15 financial year all without so much as filling in a pothole. “In Port Macquarie Hastings Council ‘Fit for the Future’ submission to IPART in June 2015, Council drastically reduced the road infrastructure backlog from $225 million to just over $91 million resulting in the $133.7 million write-off in order to appear ‘Fit’,” she said. “Council have used an accounting practice to falsely extend the life of our roads past their use by date in an attempt to meet the 2015 ‘Fit for the Future’ criteria.” Current Mayor Peter Besseling, who is

Gloves are off in council elections

Ella Cassidy, Saskia Smith, Sienna Mathieson, Imala Smith and Ella-Jayne Wehlow enjoy a bath bomb workshop at Girl Space

Locals help locals “

We are really proud of who we are and what we do and it is with hand over heart that our clubs invest in our communities in what is a record giving day

A NURTURING and fun space for girls will share in over $145,000 in locally generated funding. The ClubGRANTS Program money pool, which will support 27 community projects in total, was raised by Port City Bowling Club, Port Macquarie Panthers, The Westport Club, Club North Haven and Laurieton United Services Club. These businesses are not-for-profit and 100 percent of profit goes back into the community, ClubGRANTS Co-Chair Jenny Edmunds said. “We are really proud of who we are and what we do and it is with hand over heart that our clubs invest in our communities in what is a record giving day.” Port City Bowling Club and Port Macquarie Panthers, at the cheque presentation last Thursday, donated $10,000 to further the newly created Girl Space program for young women between the ages of 13 and 18. Program creator Ren Mathieson said 30 to 50 girls had attended Girl Space each week

By NIKALA SIM

since it kicked off in May. “My main focus was to support the Hub and help create a strong sense of community and provide a loving space for these girls,” Mrs Mathieson said. “We have created a safe place for girls to come, be themselves and get to explore their passions, their purpose, and to create a real sense of sisterhood. “Girl Space mentors are always encouraging massive amounts of self-love, respect and compassion – plus we have loads of fun!” Make-up artist Mariah McMahon has embraced her role as a volunteer mentor and has become an integral part of the Girl Space team. “The program not only helps the girls,” the 22-year-old said. “It helps me so much and gives me a real purpose in life.” Mentors volunteer their time to run fun and informative workshops and the ClubGRANTS funding will provide materials for these for the next year. Strong, independent women are needed to share their skills and host a workshop, or simply join in to inspire girls in our community, Ms

McMahon said. Expressions of interest can be addressed to Ren Mathieson on 0432 648 984. Girl Space runs each Monday from 3.30pm to 5pm at the Port Macquarie Youth Hub on Horton Street and is free. The ClubGRANTS Program also funded: Hastings Preschool and Long Day Care Centre; Port Macquarie Public School; Life Education NSW; RSL Laurieton Sub-Branch; Bonny Hills Fire Brigade; Hastings Early Intervention Program Inc; Riding for the Disabled; St Vincent de Paul Society NSW; The Salvation Army Port Macquarie; Camden Haven Sea Scouts; Hastings Education Fund; Learning Links; Telegraph Point Public School; House With No Steps; Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre Inc; Autism Spectrum Australia; Interrelate Ltd; North Haven Public School; Laurieton Public School; Kendall Public School; Alzheimer’s Australia NSW; Endeavour Mental Health Recovery Clubhouse; Port Macquarie Community College; The Leukaemia Foundation of Australia; Herons Creek Public School.

• From Page 1 “Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s submission was rigorously reviewed by IPART and was considered financially able to stand alone and not be amalgamated with a neighbouring council. If anyone has concerns with IPART’s determination, then they should direct their concerns to IPART.” Research conducted by Your Local Independent reveals that the ‘Fit for the Future’ (FFF) assessment was ostensibly a modelling exercise conducted by the state government to initiate the development of improvement processes within all local councils. As recorded in the June 2015 Ordinary Council Meeting minutes, the FFF submission and related Improvement Action Plan (IAP) were the Council’s response to the directive from the NSW State Government that all Councils must respond to their FFF reform package. All councils had been asked to demonstrate how they will meet or show improvement in seven financial ratios within a five-year timeframe. Mr Besseling also explained that the only way a rate rise can be approved is by a resolution of Council. “There has been no resolution for a 52% rate rise, and no plans for one to come before Council,” insisted Cr Besseling.” “Should such a motion be put forward, I am certain that all councillors, including myself, would vote against it. “It was a modelling exercise to determine whether a council was fit for the future or not and all the information went through to be independently evaluated and assessed by IPART; they have gone through a rigorous process so we weren’t required to be amalgamated and that was very good news.” Since 2011, many councils have been working on a more consistent and systematic approach for the assessing of asset condition, depreciation and maintenance of those assets. Kempsey Shire Council resubmitted its proposal on July 19, 2016, to be ‘financially fit’ after it updated its asset depreciation review processes in line with other councils. “We’re not the ones who deemed us ‘Fit for the Future’ – it was an independent assessment made using a rigorous process of modelling conducted by IPART using State government criteria,” reiterated Cr Besseling. “In the last financial year, Council has delivered more than twice the capital works that was delivered in the final year of administration, increased by a whopping $38 million. “At the same time, Council has reduced its net debt position by $8 million. “This is a wonderful result for this term of Council.”

Uni quantity does not equal quality MIRIAM Boughton’s letter regarding the many shortcomings of our university system is spot on. Thirty years ago Australia boasted a dozen world-class universities. Then Beazley, an otherwise able minister, in the flawed pretext of everyone being able to access a tertiary qualification, allowed the birth of what we now have. Some 30-odd institutions calling themselves universities and because there is only so many scholars to go around, we have professors and department heads who would not

have held down a lecturer’s position three decades ago. With the general dumbing down of entry standards and the dumbing down of the faculties, we have the situation of many hundreds of graduates who are unable to find employment in their discipline. Many offered courses are rubbish and I am reminded of the comment by Peter Walsh, Hawkes’ Finance Minister, who said ‘any degree qualification ending in ‘Studies’ is not worth the paper’. I too was amazed to read that

teaching graduates now have to pass literacy and numeracy tests before being offered positions. Just as alarming is the revelation that passes in high school mathematics have not been required for entry into engineering courses, even at some of our more prestigious universities. How on earth did the situation get this bad? The various states’ Board of Studies should hang their heads in shame for messing with the curriculum so often. It should not be up to teachers to teach youngsters the basics of the

times tables, spelling and rudimentary language expression. This is a fundamental role for parents. If all this means that to get back on track we need to abolish the ‘feel good’ approach we now have and return to the three Rs of ‘reading, rriting and ‘rithmetic’, then so be it. I add that I am not a graduate of a sandstone university and I do acknowledge I have ended the sentence with a preposition. Ross Holborow Smithtown

Clean up street! I TOO agree with the Thumbs Down in the July 28 edition regarding the section of Koala Street, Port Macquarie, between Wayne Richards Park and the Ocean Drive roundabout. It is a total disgrace in the eyes of us locals and an embarrassment to the town in the eyes of our visitors. On one side of the street is the Council Depot with its surplus junk piled up, including pot holed access

roads, damaged fencing, discarded tyres, concrete and other rubbish. On the other side of the street is the sewerage works in open view to all that pass. Surely it would not be too difficult or expensive to run a ridge of landfill with grass on top along the Council Depot side and an eight foot colourbond fence and or thick hedge scrub along the sewerage works side. Or better still, for the latter, a run of concrete panels (similar to road noise

barriers) depicting our wonderful local flora and fauna. Ian Scarr Port Macquarie

Pay your own way COULD not agree more with the sentiment that our Olympians should be funding their own dreams and pay a HECS-like fee for the money that comes out of the public purse that allows them to train and compete. The notion that as a nation, we

gain so much from their endeavours is massively over-stated. It is great that these youngsters pursue a healthy, competitive lifestyle, but pay your own way, just like the many nurses, doctors, etc who have to pay to reach their career dreams and don’t expect Joe-public to fit the bill. Yes, no doubt many of these youngsters and their parents pay some of the cost, but millions each year comes via the taxpayer. Name, address supplied

AS a caravaner of 50 years it is embarrassing to see the entrances to Port Macquarie and gardens in our town. Also who made the decision to position the information centre in its present location, it is impossible for caravaners to visit.

TO Simon at ALDI on Hastings River Drive for his assistance in finding boxes for my friend so we could help her pack for her upcoming move.

Thumbs Up TO the Port Macquarie Base Hospital, the Emergency Department and the Breast Scan Clinic. During the last week we have visited each of these three areas. The helpfulness, kindness and care we were provided by every employee … cleaners, wards people, cafe lady, nurses, doctors and specialists was top class. We are so fortunate in the mid north coast to have these people in this wonderful facility. Thank you so much.

OVER the past couple of weeks, you will have all noticed the works by PMHC in Short Street and Gordon Street. Personally, I think it is a lot of money being thrown down the drain. Rather than weeding the gardens and pruning existing greenery, let’s rip it all out and spend heaps on labour and the new plants. My concern? Where did all the perfectly healthy plants go? Did they just end up at the tip? On Tuesday as I was driving to work along Lake Road I had the dubious pleasure of following the Jet Patcher – council’s answer to fixing pot holes. What a joke. No, it’s a bloody nightmare! This is the most inadequate piece of machinery ever invented. It fills pot holes with gravel and then sprays tar on to said gravel, which in turn spreads the gravel all over the place with the force. Unfortunately for the cars following the Jet Patcher, they also get sprayed and then have to drive through the loose gravel and wet tar which of course sticks to the cars. I’m sure my car, Black Betty, is sitting about 6-10 inches taller from the tar on her chassis! The real joke though? I go home to pick something up in the middle of the day, Jet Patcher has gone and the pot holes are nearly as bad as they were to start with 4 hours earlier. What a complete waste of time and ratepayers’ money!

TO Port Macquarie Hastings Council for helping our local koalas survive by planting koala food trees in Wayne Richards Reserve, at the end of Banksia Ave and at the end of McLaren Drive. On behalf of the koalas, thank you.

Thumbs Down TO the selfish driver who drove off after side-swiping my car outside the Hermitage Medical Centre on Monday of last week. There is no excuse for bad driving and yours has led to an expense I, as a pensioner, can ill-afford. If you can’t drive well, then don’t drive at all.

Thumbs Up TO the wonderful young couple who assisted my husband and I last Thursday evening, August 4, when we were walking along Buller Street, I tripped and sprained my ankle. They kindly drove us home. So many good young people out there, it’s nice to share their story.

Natives to go on show By SUE PATERICK IF the Garden of Eden that Ted and Winsome Walmsley have created in their suburban Kempsey backyard is any indication of passion and beauty, then the 8th Native Orchid Conference and Show in September will be outstanding. According to Ted, the show is the biggest single native species event in the world. Australian native orchids are called speciosum, or rock lilies, and come in about six different varieties and colours - some are white, some gold, cream or yellow. These glorious flowers form on upright stems, arches, semi-arches and cascading displays. Members of the Australasian Native Orchid Society Mid North Coast Group, Ted and Winsome love growing Australian natives, especially orchids. “We sell ourselves short,” Ted said. “We have the most beautiful orchids in the world and orchid collectors in the United States and Japan are dying to get them. “They pay good money for plants then breed and cross-pollinate them.” Ted and Winsome have over 2000 orchids in their restful oasis garden, and Ted reckons they aren’t hard to grow. “It’s like anything,” he said. “You are only ever going to get what you put in.” This green-thumbed couple also grow stag horns cordylines, palms, ferns, flowers and veggies. Back in the day, both Ted and Winsome’s family had gardens and grew vegetables or they wouldn’t eat. On walks in the bush when he was a young lad, Ted noticed how beautiful the native orchids were. “I think that’s where my love of natives

Mums urged to join up THE Hastings branch of the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) celebrated World Breastfeeding Week by urging all new mums to join them. “World Breastfeeding Week is a fantastic opportunity to offer support, educate and demonstrate how breastfeeding contributes to the sustainability of the world we live in,” SAIDF Alissa Powell, Community Educator with Hastings ABA group. “Societies promote lifelong wellbeing and sustainability when they support breastfeeding mothers. Our community can reach its goals by improving intergenerational education and our mindfulness of young families, even a few simple words of encouragement can go a long way. “We encourage all mothers and carers to join our local group where they will find plenty of mother-to-mother support and resources to help them with feeding their babies and children, whether exclusively breastfeeding or not.” Ms Powell said it was important to provide support to breastfeeding mothers if breastfeeding rates and long term health outcomes in Australia are to improve. Port Macquarie Base Hospital Maternity Nursing Unit Manager Sandra Eadie said breastfeeding helps provide babies with the best start in life and is a key contributor to infant health. The ABA staffs a 24-hour hotline, 1800 mum2mum (1800 686 268) and provides email counselling, live chat, fact sheets and a range of resources through www.breastfeeding.asn.au. The Hastings Group, which covers the Wauchope-Port Macquarie-Camden Haven region, meets fortnightly on the first Monday and third Friday of each month at 10.30am at Westport Park or other venues. Say NO to Council’s Planned Greedy Rate Grab… In June 2015 Council agreed to a planned rate rise of 52.4% without consulting the Community. The Mayor and a majority of councillors voted on adopting Scenario 2c even though it was considered to be the most costly scenario to the Community.

“The recommended scenario, being 2c was selected on the basis that it met the majority of benchmarks by 2019-2020, though it is acknowledged by staff that it is the scenario with one of the highest costs to the community”. 17 June 2015 – Ordinary Council Meeting, General Manager Late Report

Tidal pool ‘not a cash splash’ By LIZZIE McLEOD RATEPAYERS will not be forced to fund a proposed local tidal swimming pool, according to the woman backing the popular concept. Kathryn Butler, who has already attracted 5,000 likes on her ‘Tidal pool for Port Macquarie’ Facebook page and 15,000 signatures on a ‘pool petition’, says cost should not be a barrier to the pool. “We are not trying to get the ratepayers’ dollar at all,” said Ms Butler. “Once we get council approval we will look at state and federal grants. “Once we get a committee together and register as a not-for-profit organisation we will start fundraising for things such as sociology reports if the council aren’t going to supply those.”

Legal Aid support FREE legal support can help homeless people deal with their problems and get off the streets, Legal Aid lawyer Andrew Taylor has said. “Research has shown that homeless people often mistrust mainstream services, face mental health issues, and find it difficult to deal with any issues beyond their immediate priorities of food and shelter,” Mr Taylor said during Homelessness Week held last week. “That’s why our specialist homelessness legal outreach service targets people who are homeless, couch surfing, sleeping rough, living in shelters, or escaping domestic violence, and those at risk of being homeless. And we provide that help where they feel safe and supported. “Homelessness Week is a good reminder that we can help people turn their back on homelessness with the right support services. “Legal Aid lawyers, working with other community organisations, play an important part in helping homeless people turn their lives around, get back into accommodation, and start to resolve their financial problems. “The most common legal issues we help our clients with are debts, employment, accidents, housing and social security, but some clients have more than legal problems. “About 50 per cent of these free legal services were provided to women.” In addition to the office at 107 William Street, Port Macquarie, (phone 5525 1600) Legal Aid NSW provides specialist homelessness outreach services at: • Werin Family Law Advice Service at the Werin Aboriginal Medical Service at 12/14 Lake Road, Port Macquarie Phone 1300 888 529 • South Kempsey Aboriginal Family Law/ Civil Law Advice Service at the South Kempsey Family Community Centre, Corner Queen and Yarravel Streets, South Kempsey Phone 6562 1888 • Kempsey Civil and Family Law Advice Service at the Kempsey Family Support Service 21 Verge St, Kempsey. Phone 525 1600.

Ms Butler said the pool construction was expected to be about $3million. She said ongoing maintenance costs would depend on where the pool was located. Early indications are that the pool would be built at Flynns Beach. An ocean pool for Port Macquarie has been on the community agenda since the early 1990s, but was ‘re-heated’ in recent weeks by local businesswoman Peta Pinson, who is running for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Mayor at the upcoming local council elections. Ms Pinson says that barriers to the tidal pool can be overcome. One of these barriers was a zoning issue. “Port Macquarie Hastings Council can rezone the site to an RE1 (Public Recreation) Zone,” said Pinson. “Or council can consent for the tidal pool to go ahead on an E2 (Environmental

Conservation) zoned site with a clause stating that although this land is zoned E2 it has been approved by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for the unique purposes of a tidal pool only”. Given the high level of support and the need demonstrated by the community Ms Pinson believes that a newly elected council should consider the rezoning options available to them and investigate the viability of the project. Ms Butler is rapt that Ms Pinson is bringing the tidal pool dream closer. “She has breathed a breathe of fresh air into this,” she said. “I fully support her. “The construction of the pool would also be a little bit of boost to the local economy, providing jobs and … even the trickle down effects to cafés, and accommodation houses. Even the airlines, will get a boost. “It’s very good for the area, and for the people

that go and spend the day at the Forster Bull Ring pool, that’s money leaving the town.” However, current Port-Macquarie Hastings Mayor Peter Besseling has flagged problems with the tidal pool concept. He has gone on record several times recently as stating there were good reasons why council hadn’t placed the pool on the current agenda. “The Port Macquarie coastline is recognised as a site of geological significance and even if the practical elements such as location, access, parking and funding were to be resolved, the environmental impediments have been described as insurmountable,” Mayor Besseling is reported as saying. “Whilst a tidal pool could be categorised as one of many ‘nice to have’ things across our Local Government Area, for the above reasons, it has not been identified in Council’s Budget or Works Program.”

A flashback to a previous raft race on the Macleay. It will be on again at the Macleay River Festival on September 24

Get ready for ‘war on water’ DON’T get left behind! Organisers of the Macleay River Festival would like to remind everyone to make sure they get their entry forms in for the Mighty Macleay Raft Regatta. A MAJOR break-through in the treatment of survivors of attempted suicide has put Lifeline Mid Coast NSW as the first centre in Australia to offer a unique service. Months of research and planning and collaboration with the Associate Director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline USA, Ms Shari Sinwelski, has led to the formation of a new peer support group. Lifeline Mid Coast NSW CEO Catherine Vaara said the Eclipse support group would draw on the experiences of others. “Lifeline recognises the loneliness, hopelessness and isolation felt by many suicide attempt survivors, as well as the lack of relevant support services, not just locally, but nationally,” Ms Vaara said. “The resulting initiative will help many find hope and connection by inviting them into a caring and non-judgemental space – one that encourages conversations about reasons for living and strategies to keep safe.” Lifeline Research Foundation Executive Director Alan Woodward said lived experience is a powerful tool for helping communities tackle the national suicide emergency at the local level. “The Eclipse support group is built on the fact that suicidal people can recover,” Mr Woodward said. “Furthermore, suicide attempt survivors can understand the depths of suicidal feeling and provide hope to others in ways no one else can.” The peer support group model for Eclipse is designed around an eight-week cycle where participants work with prescribed goals. The first stage is to feel safe and connected, then personal triggers are identified before they develop into a crisis and the third stage is focussed on hope and closure. The first session began on Tuesday, August 9. Sessions last for 90-120 minutes. Participants need to be over 18 years, self-nominate and contact Lifeline Mid Coast NSW on 6581 2800 to make an appointment for an interview.

Sam is very humble but that kind of recognition, and now by the ‘Young Archies’, motivates him to continue developing and challenging his skills

Sam’s talent is for all to see By CHRISTINA PARKIN

SAM Davison’s talent for drawing portraits has drawn the attention of the organisers of this year’s ‘Young Archies’ to become a finalist. A coloured drawing of his father, Aaron Davison, had drawn a lot of comment from those who know the family. Aaron works outdoors and is rarely seen without his hat, so Sam’s depiction of his bald-headed dad was a surprise for many, but the twinkling azure-blue eyes were the give-away. “Sam has drawn exceptionally well for his age,” says proud mum, Shannon Davison. “He’s been drawing action figures since the age of three – Superman, Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk.” Self-taught, the only tuition Sam has taken

Sam and his father, Aaron, are pictured next to the portrait Sam drew of his father, now hanging as part of the ‘Young Archies’ exhibition in the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney was with Kylie’s Art Studio in Laurieton for a month when he set himself the task of drawing his Year 6 teacher, Mr Sheridan and Principal, Mrs Paterson, at Kendall Public School as a parting gift. Humble about his skills, Sam acknowledged ‘they really like them’ and have them hanging ‘pride of place’ on their office wall. Now in Year 8 at Camden Haven High, Sam is

pleased Art is a compulsory subject, and intends selecting it as an elective next year to continue making a beloved hobby and past time into a career goal. A gift of a set of expensive Prismacolour pencils are now Sam’s ‘tools of the trade’, although he has dabbled with charcoals. Sam prefers drawing portraits over landscapes or other items, and draws from a photo he

displays on his computer screen. “I enjoy bringing facial features to life, making them realistic, although I find teeth a real challenge,” says Sam. “Faces are always different, that’s what makes them interesting.” Although Sam would like to explore combining his portraiture to create 3D characters for animation, especially his beloved action characters, he wouldn’t mind breaking into the commissions market for portraits. Soccer and playing movie themes on the piano are Sam’s other interests, but it’s Sam’s drawing skills that have taken the limelight several times, more recently when he won the Camden Haven Show Society Art Prize for schools with his portrait of Harry Potter. In Year 5, Sam’s entry for the state-wide Public Schools’s Mental Health initiative, ‘Kids Matter’ using the theme ‘every face has a place’ was selected as the design for a printrun of postcards teachers could use to send communications home to families. “Sam is very humble but that kind of recognition, and now by the ‘Young Archies’, motivates him to continue developing and challenging his skills,” says Mrs Davison. The Art Gallery NSW’s Young Archie competition invites budding artists between the ages of 5 and 18 to submit a portrait. There are four age categories: 5-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds, 13-15 year olds and 16-18 year olds. Beginning in 2013, this annual competition is judged by the Gallery’s senior coordinator of education and family programs and a guest judge, based on merit and originality. As well as online, all finalists are displayed at the Art Gallery of NSW held in conjunction with the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes exhibition.

Help is available STATE MATTERS

With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie

WOMEN In Business: Local businesswomen can now sign up to the Women’s Online Network (WON), an Australia first online platform created by female entrepreneurs and industry leaders in partnership with the NSW Government, to champion and support women through their business journey. By joining WON, local business women will be able to share in the resources, knowledge and experience of the new collaborative community. WON is a great resource for existing and aspiring female entrepreneurs, offering a one-stop-shop to business networking groups, resources, training and funding avenues. We are encouraging local businesswomen to make the most of this information which is available to female entrepreneurs at any stage in their business careers, with a focus on learning, sharing ideas and helping other like-minded women to reach their business goals. The website is focused on increasing the participation of women in entrepreneurship and providing legitimate and rewarding career pathway regardless of location. WON provides support at all stages of the business life-cycle, ensuring anyone who wants to start-up or grow their business can use this resource. The NSW Government is dedicated to delivering new opportunities and making NSW the easiest state to start and grow a business. For more information on WON please visit: www.wonnsw.com.au or call my office on 65840977. Seniors Week Grants: Local organisations and groups are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to host events during 2017 NSW Seniors Festival. The NSW Seniors Festival is about recognition and celebration. It is a time when the community recognises and celebrates the incredible contribution older people make to our community. This grant funding will help local groups organise local events for older people in our area. Hosting an event is a great way to show appreciation, as well as help older people stay active. I would encourage any local group or organisation planning to hold an event during 2017 NSW Seniors Festival to apply. Applications for the 2017 NSW Seniors Festival grants program are now open and close Friday, September 2, 2016. For more information or to submit an application, go to www.nswseniorsfestival.com.au or call my office on 6584 0977.

We must act now to attract funding ONE of the exciting announcements made during the election campaign was the establishment of a Coalition Government $25 million Jobs and Investment Package for the New South Wales North Coast. This week I convened a forum of mayors and business leaders from across the Cowper electorate to discuss how we can get ahead of the game by planning what we, as individual areas on the Mid North Coast, want from the package. Depending on each council area’s need, the Jobs and Investment Package will offer incentives to attract metropolitan businesses to the Mid North Coast, help our local businesses to expand, fund skills training packages and assist council to build supporting infrastructure. This is about all levels of government, businesses, not-for-profit organisations and chambers of commerce working together to get ahead of the game It was a frank exchange of ideas at the mayoral forum about what projects might be needed in the Port Macquarie area and how they can submit their project ideas to the Federal Government. Attendees included the Port MacquarieHastings Council Mayor Peter Besseling and Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce President Hadyn Oriti, both of whom have expressed interest in capitalising on what the package may offer the Port Macquarie-Hastings area. For every council area across the Cowper

THE COWPER REPORT

A YOUNG woman from another state told me recently that she was not allowed to lead her young charges in singing ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’ because it contained the word black. She was also not allowed lead in Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill and a few others because they had unfortunate stories. I felt like making a comment, but a kick from somewhere under the table reminded me that I should forever hold my peace. I hadn’t even started to speak, but she who must be obeyed knew what I felt like saying. In my opinion, little kids are being enveloped in cotton wool these days and need to embrace the world around them. I have covered Humpty Dumpty before. Catherine Newley from Colchester, just north of London, told me the story of a cannon that stood on the wall around Colchester in 1648. In this Civil War, the cannon was hit and the royalists were unable to put the cannon together again. Unfortunate story? Well, that is for you to decide. Some confusion surrounds the Jack and Jill story. Some people believe that it relates to Louis XVI of France, who lost his head in 1793 and Marie Antoinette who came tumbling after, but

electorate, there is going to be a different need for skills and infrastructure development. Representatives from councils and chambers of commerce across the Cowper electorate had their say on possible projects and programs that could be a fit for their local area. Grassroots local knowledge is going to be a vital part of the package, and that constructive exchange of knowledge and ideas is what we have had this week. With representatives from across the Mid North Coast attending, we are able to build a snapshot of each community, what would be an appropriate development or project for their individual areas. We want investment-ready projects, which can be established and start creating new jobs for the region. We want established local businesses, for example Bale Defence Industries and Birdon Marine, to plan their expansions. And we want our councils geared up to apply for funding through the Jobs and Investment Package.

Camp great for youngsters AN opportunity to attend a free camp during the September school holidays for teens who are deaf or hearing impaired is one not to be missed. Thanks to funding from the NSW Government, the free inaugural 2016 Northern Rivers Deaf Youth Camp will be held at Lake Ainsworth from Monday, September 26, to Thursday, September 29, for 12-17-year-olds and will include all meals, accommodation and activities. However, participants need to make their own way to and from the camp. The Deaf Society wants to encourage deaf or hard-of-hearing young people aged 12-17 years from the northern rivers and north coast area of New South Wales to develop their self-esteem, personal and leadership skills as well as enhance their friendship networks. During the camp, participants will be involved with team building exercises, leadership workshops and fantastic outdoor adventure activities such as ropes course adventures, mountain biking, canoeing and beach sports in a vacation environment under the supervision of suitably qualified staff/instructors. The program will include deaf identity/ deaf cultural awareness and some advocacy skills. Interpreters will be provided so it is accessible for all young deaf people. For more details contact Christiane Kassab, Youth Engagement Officer for the Deaf Society on 0405 749 488 or email Christiane at ckassab@deafsociety.com

It’s a dark day for nursery rhymes LAURIE BARBER

the rhyme pre-dated these events. Several theories have been put forward (why fetch water at the top of a hill?) Even Shakespeare had a go at it in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I do not know with certainty what it represents. Some comments were that it represented childbirth or a trip to the moon or even a tax on beer. I don’t think anyone will ever know with certainty. As for ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’, why would anyone complain because it contains the word black? Haven’t they heard the expression ‘Black is Beautiful’ or several other similar expressions? My book ‘Massacre at Myall Creek’ quoted many people at the time as referring to blacks and whites, even though they were not really black or white. I found in other places many examples of ‘blacks’ and ‘whites’ as descriptions of race. So far as ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’ is concerned, some say it referred to Plantagenet King Edward’s

Your Local Independent is expanding!

attempts to collect a tax on wool in every port in the country around the 13th century. After all, England had far more sheep than people, so here was a good source of money. Some also say it referred to King Edward II and his attempts to encourage weavers and cloth dyers to improve the quality of the final English products. I suppose black wool was prized as it could be used without dying. The first source in print that I could discover came in ‘Tommy Thumb’s Pretty Song Book’ of about 1744. The words were: “Bah Bah Black Sheep, have you any wool? Yes, merry have I, three bags full. One for my master, one for my dame, one for the little boy that lives down the lane”. Later versions had “one for the little boy who cries in the lane”. I was surprised to discover that some children’s schools have tried to change the words, eliminating black, which they saw as racist. Some even added happy, sad, hopping, rainbow, little and even pink. Some even considered changing ‘boy’ in case it was deemed sexist. They did not succeed. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast,com.au.

really sad they didn’t come home

WHEN Frederickton Public School student, Shi-Anne Dornan, and her class started to learn about the ANZACs in 2015, she had no idea some of her relatives never made it home from WWI. It wasn’t until the class walked down to the solemn War Memorial below their school that Shi-Anne noticed there were three Dornans listed on the Fallen Heroes’ plaque. So she asked her teacher, Vicki Evans, if those men were her relations. Her teacher’s reply was: “Let’s find out.” After a lot of research, they discovered that Shi-Anne and her younger brother, Charlie, were related to all three men. “I also learned that the Dornan family gave a lot and lost a lot in the fight against the Germans in WWI,” Shi-Anne said. “It means a lot to me and my family that they sacrificed their lives for their country. “I’m really proud, but also really sad they didn’t come home.” Leslie Rudolph Dornan and his brother Bertie Leon Dornan were Shi-Anne’s great, great grandfather’s youngest brothers. Charles Augustus Dornan also enlisted in 1916 but unlike his two brothers, he survived the war. Leslie was 21 when he enlisted. He was killed in action in Belgium on April 30 1917. Bertie was also 21 when he enlisted in 1915. He died of pneumonia and malaria while serving in Palestine on October 29, 1918. Leonard Hastings Dornan, a cousin to the three other men, was killed in action in France in 1918. He was only 21. His younger brother, John Lyle Dornan, also served his country.

needed repairs on the Frederickton War Memorial was welcome news. The $8,786 will be used to build a new fence, replace the flag pole and remove a large root of a nearby tree. War Memorials across Australia are recognised as a symbolic resting place for those brave men who didn’t come home and are buried in foreign lands. For the Kempsey-Macleay RSL SubBranch, keeping all the Macleay Valley’s War Memorials in top condition is important because many families can’t afford to visit them overseas. This was especially true decades ago. The Sub-Branch is located in front of the Kempsey-Macleay RSL Club at 1 York Lane in Kempsey, and has a fascinating museum of war memorabilia. Thursday August 18 marks 50 years since the battle of Long Tan in Vietnam and is Vietnam Veterans Day. The Sub-Branch will hold a Commemorative Service at 11am and everyone is welcome. Ricci brings Geordie to our shores By LIZZIE McLEOD

ORGANISERS of Port Macquarie’s wellknown Intensive Series are now taking their parties to a whole new level with the help of ‘Geordie Shore’s’ Ricci Guarnaccio. ‘Geordie Shore’ is a British reality television series. Based in the UK’s Newcastle, it was first broadcast in 2011 and is the British spin-off of the American show ‘Jersey Shore’ Ricci Guarnaccio is one of the show’s bestknown faces and is looking forward to partying Down Under this weekend. “Everyone knows what we’re like in Geordie Shore, life is sort of a party really,” said Ricci in an exclusive interview with Your Local Independent. “We have got the best job in the world, we go to clubs and we party. “Everyone enjoys these events, we take photos, party a lot, drink a lot, and just have a really good night.” Ricci has become such a fan of Australia that he moved to Sydney last November after falling in love with the country across six Aussie tours. “I do the ‘Kyle and Jackie O’ radio show once a week,” he said. “I’m also filming a

movie at the end of this month with the Aussie filmmaker Chris Sun. It’s going to be in cinemas November this year and it’s an Aussie horror film. I’ve done a lot of TV shows like Geordie Shore, Celebrity Big Brother, Celebrity Dinner Date, so moving to Australia was a new challenge to sink my teeth into - something new. I’m just loving life Down Under.” Ricci is especially excited about the Intensive Series as he has a keen interest in the electronic dance and DJ scene and says he can’t wait to see some local talent. “I’m thinking about getting into DJ-ing,” said Ricci. “We spend a lot of time in clubs anyway, and I absolutely love DJ-ing. It’s class. I’d love to get into it.” Ricci Guarnaccio will be ready to party this Saturday night with dance lovers throughout the night along with local favourites Korzahavoc who will hit the stage again with J-Uni, Tommy G, Healey, Jhett and Emcee Masta. Come along, meet Ricci, listen to great music, and have a proper good time, Geordie style. The Intensive Series event is on Saturday (August 13) at the ‘Macca’ Port Macquarie Hotel. Doors open at 8.30pm and the event starts at 9pm. Tickets are $15 per person at the door. For any enquiries call Shaun on 0448 382 677.

Office allowed a personal highlight COMING from a relatively low profile and standing start, politically speaking, and being much younger than the average councillor profile of middle aged male and white, some pundits would suggest that I shouldn’t have been elected when I was. Having campaigned for two years prior to the last council election in 2012 and including being elected to Council, I’ve spent the last 6 years heavily involved in Local Government and it has been an incredible experience. Holding the office of deputy mayor for a year during that period is a personal highlight and will also stand as one of the more formative years of my life. Having only been a councillor for 12 months

when I took on the role, I had to step up in a big way really quickly. When you’re thrown into the spotlight, you either sink or swim and it was at that time that I really learnt to swim. I’ve always had the attitude of anything is possible and having been the Port MacquarieHastings’ youngest deputy mayor in memory,

taking on the role was bigger than myself and I took it on in part to show other aspiring young folks that you’re never too young to have a real go. Having made the decision to step down as a councillor to pursue other projects and as we head into a new phase of our local Council, I’ll be watching with keen interest to see who the community decides to elect to the roles of mayor and councillor and will be even more interested in seeing who has a positive plan for the community. It’s really easy to find the problems in any situation, it takes leadership to offer solutions and then walk the talk. In my view, there has been some gains over the

last four years with the current councillor group and on balance some large missed opportunities. Leading into the elections which will be on September 10 this year, a few major talking points will no doubt be heavily debated by candidates. Some of the more contentious topics already include the $209 million PMHC has holed up in investments accounts, the planned 52.4% rate rises, the under-delivery of key roads and infrastructure projects and the troublesome transparency and governance of the organisation. Best wishes to all the candidates standing on September 10 and good luck to the community in cutting through the politics and spin to find your best nine representatives for the next four years.

A NEW package of measures will be introduced to assist regional students into university. The measures include: • $83 million to reduce the period students need to be employed under the self-supporting criteria from 18 months to 14 months under Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY living allowance for regional and remote students. This will mean that a student is able to meet the relevant earnings criteria to prove independence within one GAP year, as opposed to having to work for longer and delay their university commencement. The longer a student is not engaged in further study after university, the less likely it is that they will re-engage. • $24 million for 1,200 new Rural and Regional Enterprise scholarships for undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational education students to undertake Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) studies. A re-elected coalition will support young Australians living in rural and regional Australia to study and develop new skills in STEM. The scholarships will be valued at up to $20,000 each. • $45 million for isolated children’s education, including additional funding for Assistance for Isolated Children’s (AIC) Additional Boarding Allowance. The re-elected Coalition Government will increase by 50 percent the rate of the Additional Boarding Allowance to bring this assistance more in line with the costs of education for isolated families. The Additional Boarding Allowance provides a means-tested supplementary payment to provide additional support for low-income families whose geographically isolated student boards away from their principal family home. • An independent comprehensive review into equity of education access for rural and regional students to seek fresh ideas and fresh thinking to bridge the divide. There is a need for an Independent Review into Regional Education to address the clear disparity of achievement, aspiration and access to Higher Education by regional students. The package of measures means regional students, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, who face significant financial barriers and who would otherwise not make it into higher education, will have the chance to do so. People from regional and remote Australia remain under-represented at universities. While a quarter of the general community lives in regional and remote areas, they represent only one in five students at university. We need to do more to raise student aspiration and remove the barriers regional and remote students face entering university, whether at an institution in their region, in their capital city, or online.

Solar makes business sense G&A MARTIN Electrical Contractors are assisting local clubs to reduce their power bills by installing solar energy photovoltaic systems on their roofs. South West Rocks Country Club is joining Laurieton United Services Club and North Haven Bowling Club by currently installing a 100kw system, whereas Kew Country Club has installed a 60kw system and Kendall services club a 40kw. “What these clubs are making is a substantial contribution to the financial efficiency of their clubs and to the environment,” says Peter Newman, former CEO of the Australian Photovoltaic Association (now the Australian Photovoltaic Institute APVI). “Each club is getting an immediate commercial benefit by producing a significant component of their power needs, drawing far less energy from the grid.” After they have paid off their investment in the infrastructure, the power they generate can easily bring a saving of $12,000 - $13,000 a year. It is impressive to think that tilted solar photovoltaic (PV) panels convert the sunlight into direct current (DC) voltage and the inverters convert the energy to alternating current (AC) voltage, which is the form of electricity that we use to power our appliances. All the components used in the solar PV installations have tightly controlled quality requirements governed by Australian Standards and must be approved for use. The system installed at South West Rocks Country Club is a 100kw solar system consisting of 384 x 260w Trina solar modules with 4 x SMA STP25000TL solar inverters. Mr Newman explained that the number of

Pictured are some of the array of 384 solar panels being installed on the roof of the South West Rocks Country Club by G&A Martin Electrical Contractors panels are selected to optimise the voltage to make a system close to that needed to generate 100kw, taking into account the ‘peaking average of sunlight hours’ determined at 4.3 hours per day and will generate a minimum of 429kw per day. The benchmark for the electrical needs of a 3-4 person home is about 20kw per day, so the production by the South West Rocks Country Club with a 100kw system will be equivalent to

the needs of 21 homes. With the commitment by governments to supporting the implementation of renewable energies, the need to build more coal-powered power stations is being negated. Power to the mid north coast is traditionally generated in the Hunter Valley and transported by Transgrid via powerlines and stanchions that carry from 132,000 volts to 66,000 volts to the substations. Distributors such as Essential Energy then

distribute the power via poles and wires from 11,000 volts down to the 240v that are managed by the retailers such Origin or Red Energy. The production of solar power reduces the load and makes a big difference during periods of high demand. More than 1.5 million domestic installations exist already and Mr Newman said it was ‘awesome’ that the Australian public is already actively adopting the technology. “A normal household can expect a solar PV inverter system to pay itself off within 3.5 years and after 6 years, they are making 100% profit,” explains Mr Newman. “Solar panels such as those made by Trina have a 25-year minimum performance guarantee of 80% power production. “It is probably one of the few infrastructure investments which can produce an income stream.” Solar technology has advanced at such a pace that prices have plummeted by a factor of 10 since 2006. With the shift to an increase in solar PV installations, the next big advance will be in the battery technology which will enable households to ostensibly be ‘off the grid’. These batteries, such as those developed by Tesla, will enable the excess power generated during the day to be stored in the batteries for use during the night and during overcast days. Contact the experienced solar PV installation team at G & A Martin Electrical Contractors for a thorough consultation about how the shift to solar PV electricity generation can make a huge difference to the bottom line of your business’ or domestic expenses. Business PROFILE Understanding the NBN By CHRISTINA PARKIN

THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission wants to see consumers provided with better information about broadband speeds, to improve competition and consumer outcomes in the retail broadband market. Your Local Independent set out to explore what a consumer needed to know in order to comment about their present services, and what potentially will be available under the NBN rollout. Speaking to Aub Polden, a Quality Technician Technical Assistance with Hills Connection Solutions, unearthed some interesting facts during the recent election campaign. “I’m the NBN’s biggest fan and there are issues from time to time which are being worked through but people need to get it into perspective of what is best for the logistics that are presented by our country,” explains Mr Polden, who was pulled out of retirement by his brother-in-law. “The speed is there and it’s perfectly adequate for most people’s needs and what they are prepared to pay for.” There are three main components to the supply of broadband by the National Broadband Network (NBN Co) – fibreoptic, wireless and satellite. Fibreoptic technology is gradually replacing the existing copper network, but because of the extremely prohibitive cost to run the glass fibres that carry the light technology through most of Australia’s terrain, it will be restricted to cities and built-up areas. For those in most regional areas, the radio technology of connection is provided by a system of towers and is considered to be more than adequate for most people’s needs. Many ‘wireless’ installations are achieving 50/10 speeds ie 50 Mb download and 10Mb upload with a minimum of 25/5 – but you have to pay

for the higher speed and bandwidth, say for gaming purposes. Businesses - those that do a lot of international work and have hundreds of employees that require a huge amount of bandwidth to concurrently access the internet or phone system - will be among those who will both desire and require a 100/25 fibreoptic cable connection – and very few have done so to date. Satellite connection to the NBN is used for the more remote or outlying areas. The Skymuster 1A is a state of the art Australian satellite system which has only been available since the end of April – and according to Aub Polden – ‘it’s bigger and better than anything the American services are using’. Another satellite is to be added in a few months and will piggy back over the existing one. For a ‘satellite’ connection, you only need to have a ‘blue sky’ line over an elevation of 50.74 degrees to where the satellite is permanently positioned over Papua New Guinea. For a very bushy block, this might limit the quality of the audible signal from the satellite which is determined using a specific software application (app) on an ipad. There is comparative quality between the three different modes except for the speed with fibreoptic technology being the optimum.” Depending who you contact as a provider, there are inconsistencies with the accuracy and timeliness of information provided to them as to where the installations are up to. Customers should keep checking the NBN roll-out map found at http://www.nbnco.com.au/learn-aboutthe-nbn/rollout-map.html The closing date for submissions to the ACCC Broadband Speed Claims is August 25, 2016, and can be found on the ACCC website https:// consultation.accc.gov.au/communications-1/ consultation-on-broadband-speed-claims

Considering Managing Your Own Superannuation Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF’s) are becoming an increasingly popular vehicle to plan and provide for retirement as they can be a flexible, tax effective structure helping you achieve your retirement goals. However, SMSF’s are not for everyone, among other things they require careful consideration prior to their establishment, constant review of investments and last but certainly not least regulatory compliance. Now, I love my GP but I wouldn’t trust him to do heart Surgery and so it is also with Self Managed Super Funds, If you want sound, professional & effective advice regarding your SMSF, you need to get it from a SMSF Specialist. Further from 1 July your advisor/ accountant needs to be licenced within the financial services industry to provide personalised advice in this area. AVOID MISTAKES - You need to know what you can & can’t do in a SMSF so you don’t get yourself into hot water with the ATO. I’ve seen easy mistakes made by trustees, simply because of lack of guidance or knowing the rules at the time. These easy mistakes can be costly and sometimes difficult to rectify. With ATO penalties being imposed on trustees for breaching the rules, it’s more important than

ever that you have guidance from a SMSF Specialist Advisor™. The ATO is focused on SMSF’s meeting the requirements of both the income tax and super laws and have recently released a new tax governance guide that can be used by SMSF’s. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SMSF - I’ve also seen lost opportunities within a SMSF simply because of not being aware of what investments can be made or what concessions are available to the members. Working with a specialist will help optimise and leverage the benefits of having a SMSF and the strategies that will become available to you over your lifetime. WANT TO KNOW IF ITS RIGHT FOR YOU Contact Tania at Maven Advisors today to discuss how you can take control of your superannuation and start being engaged with your future. There are many advantages of using a SMSF and there also many obligations. As Licenced Advisors, we can help you in all aspects of managing your SMSF, helping you understand the obligations and guide you through the whole process.

LIFEGUARD services across our regions’ beaches have been extended following a decision by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to contract the service to Surf Life Saving Services Pty Ltd. Surf Life Saving Services Pty Ltd are a subsidiary of Surf Life Saving NSW and have been providing lifeguard services to 15 other councils across NSW for up to 29 years, covering 83 beaches. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Director Tricia Bulic said: “Council has offered lifeguard services on a seasonal basis for many years, and was one of only two regional NSW Councils to still provide the service. “This new agreement will provide the community with greater value for money, improve efficiency and increase beach patrol hours thus increasing safety for locals and visitors alike. “Importantly our lifeguards will now be able to explore greater career opportunities as they will be a part of the broader lifesaving network.” As part of the agreement, lifeguards will have access to an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and jet skis at both Town Beach and Rainbow Beach to improve response times in emergency and rescue situations at these and adjacent beaches. A new Lifeguard Supervisor will be employed and the beach and safety education program currently delivered to local schools will also be bolstered. This program aligns with the NSW education curriculum. Significant residential growth is being experienced in the area between Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills, and to support this growth, Lake Cathie lifeguard patrol hours will increase from six to eight hours per day over the Christmas period. In addition, new patrols will be provided at Lake Cathie during the spring and Easter school holiday periods. “Council is pleased to have partnered with Surf Life Saving Services to offer an increased and specialist service, and will continue our commitment to keeping the community safe on our beaches,” concluded Ms Bulic. Beach patrols will commence across the regions’ most popular beaches prior to the September/October school holidays until the end of April next year. For more information on lifeguard patrols across Port Macquarie-Hastings beaches visit pmhc.nsw.gov. au/beaches.

That’s world class By CHRISTINA PARKIN

JON Kearns, now 26, started his BMX riding and biking tricks at the Port Macquarie Skate Park 13 years ago. Unbeknown to his father, Geoff Kearns of Coastal Music, Jon announced his gold medal win in the NASS 2016 BMX Amateur World Championships, in Somerset, United Kingdom via Facebook. “I’m still stunned,” says proud dad, Mr Kearns. “As far as I knew, Jon travelled to the UK to help celebrate the 50th birthday of his girlfriend’s mother in Bristol. “Jon has always entered a lot of BMX and skateboard competitions on the mid north coast, getting very good and winning enough to be invited to be a judge in his own right. “To win the National Adventure Sports Show (NASS) amateur gold event for the BMX Vert is remarkable.” The annual NASS festival featured the best riders in the world across Pro Park, Dirt, Vert and Flatland and also showcases the best amateurs performing on an international stage. The festival aims to merge music and sport, bringing together extreme and street sports, including displays and competitions from skateboarders, snowboarders and BMX bikes, by presenting bike and board sports platforms along with live music entertainment. Jon was accepted as only one of 24 amateur riders in a hotly contested event. Next year he will compete in the professional competition against international world class professional riders. Vince Bryon from Brisbane won the Pro BMX Vert and Logan Martin, also from Brisbane, gained a first in the Pro BMX Park. To find out more about the NASS Festival, check out the site at www.nassfestival.com/bmx/ bmx-results and watch some of the action at www.nassfestival.com/bmx/bmx-video

‘Mums’ let loose in roller derby WITH names like ‘Samikaze’, ‘Scarlet O’Horror’, ‘Bomb Voyage’ or ‘Roxalot’, you could be forgiven for thinking these were the players in a local drama production. Well, the drama is certainly there when you watch a roller derby match. Everyone is invited to come and watch the fantastic Port Macquarie ‘Breakwall Brawlers’ in their bout against the ‘Northern Beaches Sirens’ on Saturday afternoon, August 13, at the Indoor Stadium on Cameron St, Wauchope. Sam Forster, who only joined two years ago, says that at the time: “I would never have thought I would be doing roller derby. “My mother thinks I’m crazy.” Sam says she joined for the fitness aspect and to do something just for herself. It takes a good 12 months to learn to skate effectively and to know how to fall to prevent injury. As a contact sport, there is an element of high intensity, but the camaraderie and support that is shown by the players toward each other is another reason the sport is growing in popularity. “It gives you a lot of confidence, especially if you have been at home caring for the family,” explains Ms Forster, aka ‘Samikaze’. “With this sport, it’s the family supporting the mums and dads.” The last time these two teams met, it came down to the final few nail-biting minutes which saw the ‘Sirens’ come out on top with a 12-point difference. See the girls and boys in action when they try to even the score. The main event will be followed by the very first co-ed derby game. It will be a fun afternoon – doors open from 2.30pm with tickets priced at $10 for adults and $5 for 10-16 years. For more information check out the Website at www.pmrdl.com.

footytips

Best advice is don’t look back DON’T look back! That’s the only advice after a disastrous NRL Round 22 tipping. Just three from eight. That hurts. We had the right methodology – tip some upsets – but just chose the wrong games. We will put the same plan into action this weekend, but hopefully with better results. Interesting to see all top teams struggling for form in recent weeks. This weekend Your Local Independent (YLI) is tipping early season pace-setters – Broncos, Cowboys, Storm and Sharks – all to be back to their best. OK, get up, dust off and let’s get back into it. Good luck for Round 23: Bulldogs v Sea Eagles (Thursday, August 11, 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Dogs won a track gallop last weekend against the Knights while the Sea Eagles lost a cliffhanger to the Eels. Conclude from that, that Manly are a big danger here to the Dogs. Canterbury, like most top sides except Melbourne have been below their best in recent weeks. However the Dogs will find another gear when they are doing it tough. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Broncos v Eels (Friday, August 12, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): The Broncos found a bit of form in a tough win over the Dragons last weekend and, hopefully for their fans, should springboard on from there. Lot of talk about problems with the Brisbane halves – Hunt and Milford. If Bennett can resolve that, then the Eels will be a doormat on the way to a higher finals ranking. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos. Tigers v Titans (Saturday, August 13, 3pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): Wow! Tough one. The scoreboard says the Titans weren’t close

Dragons v Sharks (Saturday, August 13, 7.30pm, UOW Jubilee Oval, Sydney): We tipped the Sharks to lose last weekend, but we are tipping a ‘reboot’ this weekend and a win over the Dragons. These are neighbouring teams who bring out the best in each other. The Dragons keep going close, but unfortunately the Benji magic has gone and the Sharks will get back on track. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Knights v Panthers (Sunday, August 14, 2pm, Hunter Stadium, Newcastle): Upset number two! Have been waiting to do this for weeks and so here is our chance to finally put a ‘W’ beside the long-suffering Knights. The Newcastle boys have been understrength all year, but in recent weeks have added some more starch. They always play with pride. Tipping their only win on their run home. • Your Local Independent tips: Knights

in their 24-14 loss to the Warriors last weekend. The Warriors and good judges know better. The Gold Coast team certainly lacked spark, but fed the NZers two tries with intercepts. Hayne was exceptional and will lift the Titans even more. The Tigers have blood in their nostrils after a massive upset win over the Cowboys to leapfrog into 8th place. The X Factor (Hayne) will decide this. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Warriors v Rabbitohs (Saturday, August 13, 5.30pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): We’re going for an upset here. The Warriors are now in seventh and are playing much more consistent football. However the Rabbitohs showed the Storm last weekend just how much sting remains in their tail. They have to salvage something from this season and that starts by embarrassing the Warriors at home. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs

Dr Sagnik Sengupta

Roosters v Cowboys (Sunday, August 14, 4pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): Another road trip for the Cowboys, but they should have flicked their lethargy from last weekend. Finals football is all about momentum. The Cows and Sharks have both got rid of some ‘bad vibes’ in the past couple of weeks and are ready to put their real game face back on. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Raiders v Storm (Monday, August 15, 7pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Raiders confirmed themselves as genuine GF prospects with their win over the Sharks last weekend. They are always tough at home. However the Storm are on top of the ladder because they are the most consistent team in the comp. Close one, but Storm too good. • Your Local Independent tips: Storm
