At-Large Stella

In the 2020-21 season, Portland Stage kept its doors open and produced five Mainstage shows which were performed both live in our theater and made available for digital-on-demand viewing. We continued our nationally renowned Education Programs despite ongoing school closures, reaching thousands of households across New England and beyond with our hybrid in-person and virtual programming. We maintained our commitment to fostering New Work by emerging theater artists during the 32nd Annual Little Festival of the Unexpected, and we conducted our biannual Clauder Competition for New England Playwrights, reviewing over 120 submissions of new plays that each received personalized feedback.

Board of Trustees President Darrell Pardy VP Finance Fredric Farber VP Governance Venita Simcock VP Development Nelson A. Toner Secretary Sara A. Murphy

We are committed to creating great art, passionate about using the theater to educate, and dedicated to enriching our community.

As we look back on another challenging year, I am proud to present Portland Stage’s 2020-21 Annual Report – an overview of our aspirations and accomplishments, none of which would have been possible without your support. The past year has reminded us of the importance of the Arts, and the incredible support we received was confirmation of the importance of Portland Stage in our community.

In large part due to substantial government support, along with the humbling support of our devoted community, we are in solid shape to tackle the year ahead, continue focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and bring audiences back to the theater.

Portland Stage acknowledges that we operate on the unceded land of the Aucocisco and Abenaki peoples of the Wabanaki Confederacy. This acknowledgment demonstrates a commitment to beginning the process of working to dismantle the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism through our work.

Warmly, Darrell President,PardyBoard of Trustees

The 2020-21 season was Portland Stage’s 47th consecutive year of 47th consecutive year of Mainstage programming, during which we were 1 of 10 LORT theaters given permission to produce live theater, and 1 of 12 theaters in the entire United States to produce 3 or more shows with permission from Actors’ Equity Association.

Bad Dates Carroll directed Portland Stage's production of Native Gardens which closed prematurely in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

PBS NewsHour included us in a segment seen around the nation that featured an interview with Artistic & Executive Director, Anita Stewart.

Our final show of the season was Where We Stand, a tour de force directed by Kevin R. Free. Described by the Portland Phoenix as “the perfect show for the moment” the empty space was brought to life through the amazing storytelling ability of actor Tracey Conyers Lee along with local artist Pandora LaCasse’s light sculptures.

Our regularly updated and comprehensive Safety Plan was approved by Actors’ Equity Association at the final hour needed to produce our one-man version of A Christmas Carol.

We presented Or a duringWinnipesaukeecollaborationnon-equitywiththePlayhouse,whichourbackstagecrewmanagedseveralcomplexcostumechanges.

Talley’s Folly was our first COVID-era production, and the cast, creative team, production staff and interns were incredibly nimble as we developed and refined our systems.

Portland Stage creates our handcrafted productions from the ground up by combining the best local talent with professional artists from across the nation. Our Mainstage is the core of who we are and what we do. During the 2020-21 season, we resumed in-person performances after canceling the last two productions in our 2019-20 season due to the pandemic, and we continued expanding the reach of our programming through digital platforms.

NEW WORK

Our Senior Living virtual reading reached 380 attendees and we will mount a full production during the 2021-22 Mainstage season.

In June, we ended our season with a live reading in the theater of Rich Topol’s Give Me a Moment, an early iteration of what has become Searching For Mr. Moon which will also be produced on the Mainstage in 2021-22.

Portland Stage promotes and celebrates the creation of new plays in New England. We establish an environment that supports our region’s playwrights, builds bridges between our theater and local writers, and raises awareness of our art form and the work being created in New England with our Studio Series workshops and readings, the Clauder Playwriting Competition, and the Little Festival of the Unexpected. Throughout the 2020-21 season, our Literary Manager, Todd Brian Backus, was hard at work creating virtual new works programming to keep our audiences engaged in the developmental process.

We held multiple readings of John Cariani’s novel Almost, Maine, the play version of which was our highest grossing production ever, and the “Writer’s Cut” virtual series reached over 350 households.

Our 2nd ever Virtual Little Festival of the Unexpected included readings of the three Clauder Competition winning plays: Last Ship to Proxima Centauri by Greg Lam, In His Hands by Benjamin Benne, and Rx Machina by Caity-Shea Violette. Each LFU reading had ~400 views per show, and the Clauder’s Grand Prize Winner, Last Ship to Proxima Centauri will be included in the 2021-22 Mainstage season.

We hosted the 23rd Annual From Away international writers festival, featuring the work of playwright, director, and actor Gabriela Román Fuentes (Mexico), TV and fiction writer Samuel Menghesteab (Eritrea), and theater director and writer Chan Ping Chiu (Hong Kong).

We began the season with a viewing party and panel discussion around Heidi Schreck's What The Constitution Means To Me featuring Stephen M Engel (Constitutional Law Professor, Bates) and former Portland Stage Intern, Beka Bryer (Public Memory PhD Northwestern).Candidate,

Starting last summer, our Education team restarted in-person programming and created a series of camps serving over 260 young people both in-person and online over the course of the season.

We partnered with Portland Public Schools for the full school year, bringing 21 students into our spaces for the full school day four days a week.

EDUCATION

We partnered with Maine Audubon to find a safe, outdoor space for our Teen Shakespeare Company to perform. One of the parents wrote about that program: “You are, and continue to be, a life changing and life affirming part of my daughter’s life.”

10 11

Given the success of our virtual programming throughout the pandemic, our Education team offered a Teacher Training Workshop to 80 Maine teachers.

Since 2010, Portland Stage has built and implemented a series of highly regarded Education Programs to engage students from pre-K through high school both in school and in our in-house Theater for Kids (TFK) space. Our TFK programs provide the R&D backbone for our programming in schools. Working with librarians and local children’s authors, our Education team connects outstanding children’s literature as well as Shakespeare and the plays within our season as teaching texts. Designed to grow with students, our Education Programs meet a need for innovative arts education in Maine schools, across all grade levels, by engaging students in the creative process. The overall goal of our Education Programs is to build literacy, cultural awareness, teamwork, and critical thinking using theater as a tool for discovery.

Throughout the pandemic, our Education team has continued offering both in-person and online programming and a variety of virtual education resources to continue engaging young people, families, teachers, and students. Over the past season, there were over 80,000 individual views of our online education materials, and we had students from classrooms in Texas and Africa join us for programs.

In June 2020, we created an Ad Hoc Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee to begin our work in ensuring that we play a leadership role in our community’s commitment to anti-racism.

We co-hosted a fun and casual virtual happy hour with longtime corporate partner, WrightRyan featuring John Cariani reading an excerpt from Almost, Maine, a mixology demonstration with Vena’s Fizz House, and a great round of Maine trivia!

Portland Stage offers many points of entry for a diverse population, and plays a pivotal role in the life of our community by providing the experience of live theater - an experience which enlightens and adds insight into our world. Portland Stage promotes access to the theater through multiple channels, including Pay-What-You-Can performances, discounted Rush35 tickets for patrons 35 and under, subsidized Student Matinees, complimentary tickets for partner organizations, and now, by bringing our work online and making it available to audiences across the globe. Beyond our Mainstage productions, we engage audiences through discussions, new play readings, and Affiliate Artist events, many of which are free or pay-what-you-can.

We finished the season with our Virtual Spring Gala and online auction entitled NEW ERA, NEW WORK: A Virtual Celebration and Creative Salon with John Cariani & Monica Wood

In early 2021, we hired a DEI consultant, Nichole Beiner who has been working with the DEI Committee to revise our Mission and Values to ensure that any decisions we make are built on a solid framework.

Throughout the season, Portland Stage typically hosts several interactive and informative events that showcase different elements of the theater - from production, to new work, to education. Participants have the opportunity to meet staff and artists, often rubbing elbows with fellow supporters over wine and cheese, and attendees leave knowing more about how Portland Stage is accomplishing our mission of art, education, and community. Although our special events season was cut short due to the pandemic, we were still able to connect with our members in new and exciting ways.

Our NEW ERA, NEW WORK gala raised over $23,000 in support of Portland Stage programming!

We have also begun an extensive review of our Intern Program in an effort to ensure accessibility and inclusion in our Intern hiring process and throughout the season each Intern Company is with us.

NICHOLE BEINER POWELL-NEWMAN teaches people and organizations the leadership skills necessary to cultivate equitable, inclusive environments that empower diverse people to show up as their full, authentic selves--to know that they’ll be seen, heard, and valued, and included. She believes that when we empower others with the knowledge and skills to engage in difficult conversations about difference with empathy and compassion, we create environments where people of all backgrounds can thrive.

We worked with our partners at Portland Public Schools and our covid testing partners at Northern Light Mercy Hospital to offer free Gala tickets to frontline healthcare workers and teachers

Our staff has also begun stepping through the We See You White American Theater Principles for Building Anti-RacistSystems.Theatre

Both board and staff have started working through a series of Anti-Racist lessons built by Michael ExecutiveBobbitt,Director of the CulturalMassachusettsCouncil.

It takes a lot of hands and helpers to produce the exceptional work on our Mainstage, and Volunteers support Portland Stage in many ways. We are always looking for ushers, greeters, stitchers, and more, and all volunteers are encouraged to make as big or as small a time commitment as they can. We are eternally grateful to our 2020-21 Volunteers, many of whom have been donating their time and talent to Portland Stage for years - and now, through a pandemic!

To follow these principles, we had to find a new way to work. We developed a budget that could flex as the situation on the ground changed, and we developed a comprehensive safety plan. Our Staff dug in and looked at every aspect of our operation from cleaning protocols and social distancing, to altering work schedules, and improving the air quality in our facility.

We invested in a Bipolar Ionization system that was installed in our HVAC units which allowed us to feel secure inviting people back into the building.

Remain financially stable

To do that, our entire operation needed to be reimagined starting with 3 guiding principles that would carry us through the 2020-21 season:

With all these systems in place, we were able to consistently create productions and programming from July 2020 through June 2021.

We also recognized the need to get help from the government around changing rules and regulations, as well as additional funding and resources.

our Congressional Delegates, and the Governor’s team around multiple issues including SVOG, State Funding, and State Safety Plans.

2020-21 YEAR IN REVIEW

Commit to producing live theater for our community

We joined the Coalition of Professional Theaters, a national group of theaters who are working with Arnold and Porter, a DC lobby firm. We now understand the power of working together to lobby on our collective behalf.

When the pandemic hit, the simple and easy choice would have been to close up shop and wait. From a financial perspective at the end of our 2019-20 season, that appeared to be the most logical step, however we instead chose to follow our mission.

We created the Association of Maine Performing Arts organizations who met regularly to assess the situation. As a group, we successfully lobbied

With physical systems in place, we had to find a new way of communicating and sharing our programming with our community.

As challenging as the past year has been, we anticipate the upcoming years will be equally complicated, though the issues will be ever shifting. In the upcoming year, we will:

• Structure our season around our 2021 Spring Gala theme: NEW ERA, NEW WORK, and planning to bring several world premiere productions to our Mainstage.

In reflecting on our accomplishments over the past year, I am overcome with pride and appreciation for our hardworking staff and artists. Each member of the Portland Stage team has played a critical role in our ongoing operations throughout this seemingly unending pandemic. As we continue to navigate through unchartered territory, I look forward to making our 2021-22 season as prolific as the one this report has summarized.

2021-22 GOALS

• Build out a Mainstage season with full casts in hopes of full audiences.

With your continued belief in our work, we will keep Portland Stage a thriving, relevant, and innovative center for the arts for years and years to come.

To all our friends and supporters, thank you for helping us pivot and persist over the past year.

• Continue to pursue and practice an anti-racist agenda, and will continue our work towards becoming an inclusiveerse, equitable, and accessible organization and working environment.
