NEW WORK Portland Stage is committed to cultivating our region’s playwrights while introducing our audience to the creative process. We inspire, nurture, and launch plays that will delight audiences for decades to come by incubating new work.

Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).

Actor, Tony nominee and playwright, John Cariani, whose Almost, Maine is one of the most produced plays by high schools and colleges, will return to Portland Stage this season with a new Made in Maine production, Not Quite Almost.

MAINSTAGE With a season of six Mainstage shows, Portland Stage brings a wide range of performances to Maine. Every Mainstage show is handcrafted in our historic building in the Portland Arts District. Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen is a magical fairy tale that speaks to all of us, young and old. On its surface, the story is simple: Gerda, our hero, sets out to rescue her friend, Kai, who has fallen under the spell of a magic mirror that makes him see the world with distorted eyes. If you look deeper, you see that Andersen is commenting on human nature, and his critique feels especially relevant in our world today. The shard of glass in Kai’s eye is a metaphor for outside influences that change our perspective. From the blue/ red Portland Presents • Return to Index

divide, to our addiction to drugs or social media, we see “shards of glass infecting people” around us every day. Recently, these problems have seemed so insurmountable that it feels easier to curl up and stop trying. But Andersen shows us with a small barefooted girl who goes out into the world on her own. She believes in her heart that she can make a difference, and she does. Andersen taunts us; if a small defenseless child can do it, why can’t you? In the end, Gerda doesn’t fix the whole world, but she does rescue her best friend. As she and Kai share the story of their adventures with a new group of children, the Snow Queen is still present, waiting, reminding us that life has always been a cycle: “for spring turns to summer, summer to fall and winter will come once again.” The seasons and our world will continue to change for nothing is final unless we make it so. Stay true to your heart, keep moving forward and here’s to the power of truth and kindness. May all the wonders of the season be with you and yours.

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a WITH ARRANGEMENTS Danish writer, poet, and AND ORCHESTRATIONS playwright, best known as the author of some of BY the world’s most widely read fairy tales. Born into poverty in Odense, Denmark, Andersen began his career as an aspiring actor, but turned to writing while at the University of Copenhagen. Although he first achieved literary recognition in the 1830s for his plays and novels, it was his fairytales that eventually made him an international literary figure. Andersen was an innovator in children’s fiction, writing most of his tales in a spoken rather than literary idiom, and depicting suffering and unhappy endings while still staying connected to a child’s perspective. Among the best-known of his over 150 children’s stories are “The Princess and the Pea” (1835), “The Little Mermaid” (1836), “The Emperor’s New Clothes” (1837), “The Ugly Duckling” (1844), and “The Little Match Girl” (1848). Andersen’s story “The Snow Queen” (“Sneedronningen,” in Danish) was first published in 1845 in his fourth collection of Eventyr (or Tales). One of Andersen’s longest stories, it is also regarded by some critics as his masterpiece, and has remained one of his most popular tales over the years.

DIRECTOR Anita Stewart has directed Snow Queen, A Christmas Carol, Peer Gynt, and Women and the Sea at Portland Stage. Anita has designed sets and costumes at leading theaters across the country, including the Guthrie, Seattle Rep, Canadian Opera Company, Minnesota Opera, A.R.T., Steppenwolf, Hartford Stage, Dallas Theater Center, Long Wharf Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, and Portland Stage Company. Anita’s desire to play a meaningful role as an artist in a specific community brought her to Portland Stage in Maine as Artistic Director. She would like to thank her husband, Ron, for all his support.

TODD BRIAN BACKUS

ASSOCIATE

DIRECTOR Todd Brian Backus is Portland Stage’s Literary Manager. Additionally he’s a new works director, dramaturg, and illustrator. You may have seen Todd’s work on the Mainstage with last season’s What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck, or The Cake by Bekah Brunstetter the year before. He’s thrilled to be teaming up with Anita Stewart to bring this year’s rendition of The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen to life. Todd’s work focuses on showcasing stories that stretch the theatrical imagination as he did in his Too Strange to Live, Too Weird to Die reading series, showcasing work by playwrights Caridad Svich, Kevin R. Free, Topher Payne, Madeleine George, Kate Benson, and Jiehae Park. He likes to work on “weird theater,” by which he means: sci-fi plays about absentee voting, plays where sportscasters narrate Thanksgiving like the big game, spooky plays about not recognizing your children, and plays that combine poetry, swordplay, and ghosts. As a lifelong fan of fairy tales, he’s thrilled to return to the Mainstage with this lovely piece. Much love to his partner Steve Engel.

PLAYNOTES PERSPECTIVES AN INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTORS: ANITA STEWART AND TODD BRIAN BACKUS Edited for Kimmarie McCrann

Kimmarie McCrann (KM): How did you first encounter the fairy tale “The Snow Queen?” What inspired you to create this adaptation? Anita Stewart (AS): We were looking at stories that felt in the right season, and we wanted it to be something that was in the public domain. Frozen was a big thing, and I knew that Frozen was based on The Snow Queen, but it’s not the same story. And so I was really curious about saying, “Well, let’s look at the real story,” and I started to look at it and realize that it’s this young girl that’s a hero, and it’s a hero’s journey. I love the seasonal quality of it, but it’s not Christmas-oriented, and a lot of our population, especially in the schools, isn’t necessarily Christian. And so, it was a way of doing something that was rooted in Hans Christian Andersen with Christian roots, but we sort of softened that and made it a bit more universal. KM: Can you talk about the editing process for this adaptation? What is it like directing a play where you have the artistic freedom to make cuts or changes to the script? Todd Brian Backus (TBB): So, when Anita brought me onto this project, we were talking about different things that excited us about this script, and different things that we had struggled with in the script. I wanted to make sure that we were on a similar wavelength before saying, “Yeah, let’s do this together,” because if we had fundamentally different ideas about the play, I didn’t think this would be great for the two of us to do. And, just about every note that I had, [Anita] either said “Yes, we can fix it that way,” or “I don’t like that fix, but I do see that problem, does this fix work instead?” and so that was really lovely. There’s this sequence near the end of the play where Gerda, overwhelmed by the forces of the Snow Queen, drops to her knees and prays, and a host of angels comes down and saves her. It was a holdover from Hans Christian Andersen, but also felt really out of left field, and what excited me more was not Gerda being rescued in this moment, but Gerda finding her own strength and saving herself. She’s gone on all these adventures, met all these people, and finding her own inner strength in this moment was really exciting. KM: What drew you to using Emily Dickinson poems throughout this adaptation? AS: It felt like the story needed music in it. I’m not a lyricist, Hans [Indigo Spencer, the composer] is not a lyricist, and so I was thinking about who else was writing in this time period. So many of the themes that Dickinson writes about are nature and nature personified in a way, and they’re sort of quirky and weird in the same way that this tale is quirky and weird. So, it felt like it was a good fit. And, the more I dug into Emily Dickinson poems, the more I found poems that directly connect to the story.

PLAYNOTES PERSPECTIVES KM: Why do you think “The Snow Queen” has been retold over and over? AS: I think part of it is, it’s a complicated story. Most of the stories that we follow that have been told over and over tend to be one single track, and this is actually seven little ministories that got rolled into one. We’re getting to go to all these different worlds, and they’re all connected, but they’re each a different flavor. It reminds me a bit more of The Nutcracker, where there’s different worlds, rather than those unitrack fairy tales. It’s a little bit more complicated for very young people. TBB: Yeah, it’s definitely more episodic than most fairy tales are. But, there’s a bunch of stories that Hans Christian Andersen wrote that we now think of as canonical, like “The Emperor’s New Clothes” or “The Ugly Duckling.” I think this is him reaching a bit, but there’s a bunch of interesting parts where we have a strong female protagonist, we do get to go to all of these places. One thing that has been hitting me a lot working on this are the parallels between Kai and Gerda. Both of them get tempted by a magic woman who offers them comfort and solace, and to be cared for forever. Kai accepts that, and Gerda eventually rejects that and continues on her journey. I think that that’s interesting, that we get to see these two characters struggle in similar ways, and push past that. AS: Speaking of that, beyond it being a hero’s journey with a girl, all the strong characters in this play are women. And to me, that’s really exciting. It’s not kings— it’s princesses and queens and crones. It’s women as a source of strength and seeing strong women who are leaders and in charge. It’s curious to me that Andersen would have written this back when he did, because that was not the way of the world. KM: Why do you think it’s important to share this story in 2024? TBB: I think it’s lovely to tell a story about how even when things seem impossible, moving towards a goal, and while you don’t need to change the world, you can change it enough for one person. AS: To me, in this world where we’re so divided, and people do have really diverse views of what is right, it’s this notion of knowing in yourself where you sit and persevering and being kind and seeing that that can change somebody’s perspective. By staying true to what you believe in, and following your heart. It’s not about battling anybody, it’s “I’m bringing good, even to you, who are seeing things with this vision that’s shrouded by a shard of glass.

EMILY DICKINSON AND HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN: COMPLEMENTING VOICES By Shannon Stockwell, edited and updated by Micki Kleinman

Emily Dickinson’s poems provide the lyrics in Portland Stage’s adaptation of Hans Christen Andersen’s The Snow Queen, which places these two writers in an intriguing dialogue. Dickinson and Andersen were contemporaries of the 1800s living continents apart, in Massachusetts and Denmark, respectively. Andersen and Dickinson’s public personas were quite dissimilar, but the two shared many fears, concerns, and struggles in their personal and literary lives. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1830, the daughter of a well- known politician and lawyer. Dickinson’s writing benefited from her education in classical literature, mathematics, and history, as well as from her admiration for poets like John Keats. Dickinson’s work is distinguished by its concise language, striking imagery, and emotion, which oscillates between wit, joy, and mourning. Dickinson’s writing was distinct from the wordy style widely used in the Romantic style of her time. While Dickinson and Andersen are both well-known writers today, only one achieved fame during their lifetimes. Andersen seized every available opportunity to get his work published or give public readings. In contrast, Dickinson crafted nearly 1,800 poems but chose to publish only ten in her lifetime, which received little attention. She formed friendships with several editors and continued to write prolifically, yet avoided fame and even common social interactions.

NORWEGIAN FAIRY TALES

The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen is a beloved fairy tale that has had a home at Portland Stage since 2011. Told in seven, interconnecting stories, Anita Stewart has made sure to include some hallmarks of Andersen’s original tale. Instead of beginning with “Once upon a time,” we begin conversationally, as Andersen did with “Let us begin! For when we come to the end we shall know more than we do now.” This line allows the storyteller to really leap off the page and invite the audience into the tale.

Norwegian fairy tales don’t end with a “happily ever after” either. Instead they use the phrase “Snipp, snapp, snute, så er eventyret ute” or “Snip, snap, snout, this tale is told out.” In some ways Andersen doesn’t really believe in happily ever after (honestly, read The Little Mermaid, but be ready for tears). Although his story ends with the reminder that even in the dead of winter, spring isn’t far behind. Once our tale is told out we hope The Snow Queen will bring you some cheer as we journey through the seasons.

We encourage our audiences to visit the Abyssinian Meeting House (learn more at abyssinianmeetinghouse.org) or the Eastern Cemetery here in Portland, and to explore scholarship on the subject, like Lives of Consequence by Patricia Q. Wall, to learn more about this oft-neglected part of Maine’s history. We recognize that the American Theater has also exploited, misrepresented, and excluded communities of Latine, Asian, Indigenous, and Middle Eastern descent for centuries. Portland Stage is recommitting to telling authentic stories from diverse backgrounds that all of our audiences can experience and enjoy.

ENSEMBLE BIOGRAPHIES Finnegan Bailey is an 8th-grade student at Gorham Middle School. He has acted in A Christmas Carol here at Portland Stage, Sleepy Hollow at the Schoolhouse Arts Center, and Xanadu and Beauty and the Beast at the Gorham Middle School. Finn also likes playing drums, listening to heavy metal, and making horror films. Piper Baker is a freshman at South Portland High School. This is her first show at Portland Stage. She was most recently in productions of Les Misérables and Anastasia both at STAGES Youth Theater. In her spare time, she likes to sing, read, and hang out with her chickens. Piper is super excited to be a part of The Snow Queen and hopes you enjoy the show! Seraphina Beasley is an actor, singer, writer, and reading enthusiast. Seraphina has performed in a number of plays at Maddy’s Theatre, including Gruff: An Epic Fairytale Eco Musical and Make Way for Ducklings. With STAGES Youth Theater, Seraphina has performed in Sherlock Holmes, Cherry Orchard, and Sense and Sensibility. At Portland Stage, Seraphina was last seen in A Christmas Carol. In her spare time, Seraphina loves exploring the shelves of local bookshops throughout Portland and playing Zelda and Mario Kart with her two sisters. Seraphina is excited to return to Portland Stage for this production of The Snow Queen. Evangeline Cambria is an actor, singer, and Greek mythology enthusiast. Evangeline has performed in numerous shows with local theaters. With the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, Evangeline performed Elephant and Piggie: We Are in a Play in schools across southern Maine. She also performed with Maddy’s Theatre in the intergenerational shows Gruff: An Epic Fairytale Eco Musical and Make Way for Ducklings. Evangeline has appeared in Portland Stage’s productions of A Christmas Carol and What the Constitution Means to Me, and the staged reading of Tom Hanks’ and James Glossman’s See You Tomorrow. Evangeline is excited to return to Portland Stage. Lydia Casey, a 5th grader at Sea Road School in Kennebunk, is thrilled to debut in The Snow Queen at Portland Stage! She first discovered her love for theater at Portland Stage’s summer camp, where she explored acting, narration, costume, and set design. Lydia also starred as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz at Girl Scouts Camp Pondicherry’s theater program. Offstage, she enjoys reading, writing, playing piano, soccer, and lacrosse.

With her bright, outgoing personality, Lydia brings creativity and energy to every activity she joins—especially when surrounded by family and friends.

Stella Faherty is a 3rd grader at Waynflete. This is her first performance with Portland Stage, and she can’t wait to share the magic of The Snow Queen with you. Stella loves to spend time with her sister Lydia (usually involving creating a show for her family), playing violin, singing, tennis, riding horses, and ballet. Her favorite animal is the panda (she’s also a big cat lover), and her favorite musicals are Hamilton and In the Heights. Hope you enjoy the show! Lily Jessen is in 11th grade and is thrilled to be part of The Snow Queen! Most recently, you may have seen her in Portland Stage’s 2024 production of What the Constitution Means to Me or in A Christmas Carol in 2023. She has been a regular face in Portland Stage’s Teen Shakespeare Group since 2020 and has also done productions with STAGES Youth Theater and Lyric Music Theater. When she isn’t on stage, you can find her writing stories and poetry, curled up with a book, or singing with her chorus. She hopes you enjoy the show! Anna Levangie is a 7th grader at Frank H. Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth. She was introduced to Portland Stage through the summer camp programs. She loves acting and has been in A Christmas Carol, Hamlet, and many more at different stages. This will be her third production with Portland Stage. In Anna’s free time, she likes to self-teach herself guitar and skateboarding while rocking out to metal or 80s rock and roll. Asa Mann-Bolinder is 9 years old and in the 3rd grade at East End Community School. Asa likes to draw, bike, and skateboard. This is his first time in a theater performance, though he has enjoyed two years of Portland Stage summer camp. He would like to thank all audience members for coming to The Snow Queen. Una Mayer is a 5th grader at the East End Elementary School and this is her second production at Portland Stage. Outside of acting, Una enjoys going to the theater, dance class, drawing, hanging out with her cats (especially Boba), and watching post-apocalyptic movies. She loves New York City, cold weather, playing the cello, wand making stuff. She is very excited to be a part of The Snow Queen this year. 108

ENSEMBLE BIOGRAPHIES

Freya Gray Moon is thrilled to be a part of The Snow Queen! She is a 3rd grader at Falmouth Elementary School and this is her first production with Portland Stage. She was recently an “extra” in an upcoming TV series, and loves participating in the school talent show every year. Freya enjoys hanging out with her cats Max and Molly and her dog Zoey, watching movies with big sister Georgia and her family, gymnastics, coming up with various inventions, tackling fun math problems, solving riddles, and asking questions. Soph Maillet is so happy to be working with Portland Stage again this year! She’s currently a freshman at Portland High School. She was in A Christmas Carol last year, and she enjoys singing in the chorus. She has two cats named Washburne and Zoë. When she’s not performing, you can find her playing Dungeons & Dragons or Baldur’s Gate 3, and ranting about her favorite science facts. She also loves animation and art!

Delia Shambaugh is an 8th grader at Cape Elizabeth Middle School and is thrilled to be a part of this year’s performance of The Snow Queen. Delia enjoys singing, swimming, hanging out with her dog Seggie and brother Way, and trying (and failing) to bake. This is Delia’s second performance with the Portland Stage. Last year, she played a Cratchit child and Fan, Ebenezer’s sister, in A Christmas Carol. She was also in a CEMS production of Matilda the Musical. Delia is honored to be a part of this year’s Portland Stage performance and hopes you enjoy the show! Angelina Skinner, a 1st-grade student at Sebago Elementary School is very excited to have the opportunity to perform in her first professional show, The Snow Queen. When she is not going to the theater to see Broadway shows, ballets, or local productions, she loves to dance, play soccer, and read. Angelina’s love for the theater and for performing on stage has developed because of Portland Stage’s Play Me a Story and summer camps, and we can’t thank them enough. Angelina would also like to thank her Mom, Dad, and brother Jonas for their love and support.

ARTISTIC & PRODUCTION BIOS Anita Stewart)** (Scenic Designer) has worked as a set and costume designer at leading theaters across the country, including the Guthrie, Seattle Rep, Canadian Opera Company, Minnesota Opera, A.R.T., Steppenwolf, Hartford Stage, Dallas Theater Center, Long Wharf Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Boise Contemporary Theater, New Jersey Shakespeare, and Portland Stage. Anita’s desire to play a meaningful role as an artist in a specific community brought her to Portland Stage as Artistic Director, a company for which she had previously done significant freelance design. Anita holds an MFA in Design from the Yale School of Drama. Kathleen Payton Brown** (Costume Coordinator) has designed costumes for many shows at Portland Stage. Most recently: Manning, A Christmas Carol, Smoke on the Mountain; Perseverance; Talley’s Folly; Almost, Maine; It’s a Wonderful Life; Ain’t Misbehavin’; Skeleton Crew; and The Half-Light. Favorite designs: Red Herring, Lost Boy Found at Whole Foods, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Dancing at Lughnasa, Red, Love/Sick, and Hidden Tennessee. Other design credits: MSMT, Opera House Arts, Theater at Monmouth, The Public Theatre, UMaine Dept. of Theatre, Bates College Theater, Colby College Theater, Lyric Stage Co., and the N.J. Shakespeare Co. Kathleen lives in Camden, managing her own custom clothing business, as well as working as the Events Coordinator at the Waldo Theatre. Bryon Winn** (Lighting Designer) is delighted to be returning to Portland Stage for his 24th season. He has designed over 65 productions for Portland Stage. His design work has also been seen at Trinity Rep, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Axis Theatre, Intersection for the Arts, Miranda Theatre Company, Florida Studio Theatre, Utah Musical Theatre, Middlebury College, Cornell College, Riverside Theatre, and Iowa Summer Rep. Bryon serves as the Director of Theatre at the University of Iowa and is a member of United Scenic Artist 829. Seth Asa Sengel (Sound Designer) has spent decades making theater with creative souls all over our United States. He is glad to be home in Maine, and at Portland Stage, where he has collaborated on dozens of wonderful productions. A few favorites include A Christmas Carol, Saint Dad, Sweet Goats and Blueberry Señoritas, The Half-Light, and It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.
