THE HILL HOUSE

he clock is ticking in the Hill house, with (at the time of writing) a mere 10 weeks until B-day: Arrival of the third, rather late and unexpected, Hill offspring. My terrifying girth seems to have roused Mr Hill house from the sweet slumbers of denial, and into action, and the third and (nearly) final phase of the great rebuild is underway: Project garden studio.

Although he claims to be very fond of babies, I suspect the thought of a quiet sanctuary at the end of the garden may also have been fairly motivating. We had a small studio in the garden for many years. Not quite big enough for additional living or sleeping space, it was used mainly as an occasional office. Latterly, it was used mainly for storage and spider accommodation. We pulled it down at the start of phase one to give builders access to the garden: Now the time has come to create something bigger, better and more beautiful in its place.

“It’s looking so cool at the end of our garden, surrounded by honeysuckle, grasses and lavender, that all-out war has broken out on the subject of its eventual use” So, taking shape is a modern building, with a proper asphalt roof, wooden floor, broadband, radiator and (eye-wateringly expensive) electrical supply, and some rather nice sliding glass doors. It looks good.

In fact, it looks great – like a miniature modernist retreat or pared-down chic hotel room. It’s looking so cool at the end of our garden, surrounded by honeysuckle, grasses and lavender, that all-out war has broken out on the subject of its eventual use.

In addition to office and living/sleeping space, I had the decked area in front of the studio in mind for a hot tub. But the teen and nearly-teen Hills, it seems, see it as a party-cum-x box-cum-chillout area for them and their mates (lucky neighbours). Mr Hill, on the other hand, is the one building the thing – and with every nail he positions I can just tell he is imagining packing up and moving himself out there lock, stock and (possibly) bulldog, leaving me to fend the night feeds and nappies on my own.

That’s not going to happen. If I have to sell a teenager (or a bulldog), I’m buying that hot tub. And come mid-October, when I’m not busy nursing, I intend to be sat in it. On my own. Well, aside from a long-awaited glass of wine.. while Mr Hill house and the teenagers learn all about nappies.

PASS THE SOAP Why do I need to wash my hands all the time? They’re perfectly clean...

You think? They might look clean, but it’s things you can’t see that can cause problems. Microbes live anywhere, on door handles, keyboards, tables, in toilets, on pets, plants, in your nose; keeping hands clean is one of the most important things we can do to stop ourselves and others from becoming ill.

Are you some kind of clean freak? A few microbes are good for my immune system!

You’re kind of right. We all have our own ‘personal microbial cloud,’ or microbiome, made up of bacteria, fungi and viruses unique to us, that follows us wherever we go. This ‘cloud’, which can change over time, depending on where we are and what we do, is a good thing. A bit like a muscle, our immune systems need to work to become strong, and exposure to everyday dirt and bacteria can help that. The key is to wash your hands in the right way, at the right time.

ARE YOU TELLING ME THERE’S A WRONG WAY TO WASH MY HANDS? Certainly. Like so many things, it's all about frequency and technique.

Always wash your hands after using the toilet, before cooking, serving food or drink, or eating, before applying makeup or inserting contact lenses, before being intimate with anyone…

That’s quite enough of that, thank you!

I’m being serious! Its important to wash before and after ingesting anything or coming into contact with any mucous membranes (your own or other people’s), as well as obvious occasions like after gardening, handling refuse, using the loo, caring for someone who is ill, picking up after your dog and so on.

So what is the right technique, and why am I doing it wrong?

US Public Health Agency the Centre for Disease Control recommends washing hands in a specific way: Wet hands with clean, running water; Apply soap thoroughly (normal soap is fine – you don’t need antibacterial products) and lather or scrub whilst humming ‘happy birthday’ from start to finish twice; rinse hands under clean running water; dry with a clean towel or air dry.

ER, HOW DOES HUMMING HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAKE MY HANDS CLEAN? Oh, don’t worry – it's not that bad bacteria hate the song, and it's not their birthday. Research shows that 20 seconds (which is about how long it takes) is the right duration for effective handwashing. No candles required.

PROGRESSIVE DESIGN The challenge: update a traditional synagogue to create a new space suitable for the needs of the community while retaining the existing building.

The Brief: For a long time, the synagogue, wishing to create suitable spaces for their needs of the community while retaining the existing building, struggled to find a solution to the limitations of their home. While all avenues were explored, the existing fabric of the building declined, the maintenance costs rose and the building couldn’t be occupied. The congregation had to move to temporary facilities within Hove for its religious and social activities.

After a long search, the synagogue found a team which understood their needs and with which they felt comfortable to work. ZSTa were appointed as architects to the proposed development at 6 Lansdowne Road following the prior agreement of an overall design scheme by Preston Rubin Associates. In light of the budget constraints, ZSTa recommended a value-engineering exercise to reduce the final cost of the building works in order for the project to proceed.

The detail The works on the new proposal came within budget and started on site in October 2014.

The work consisted of a strip-out of all internal 6 PORTFOLIO

walls and floors, taking down the west and south elevation to the neighbouring garden level and the roof. The north elevation and the roof trusses had to be retained due to planning constraints.

"The project is unique in the sense that it was a collaborative effort of the congregation, the core building team and the effort which every person involved invested into the scheme" A timber frame construction was used for the external west and south walls, with new roofs following the existing pitches and repair works to the existing trusses. A new steel frame structure designed by a structural engineer was erected internally to create the new floor and wall spaces.

The design of the building had sustainability at its heart with thermally well-insulated timber

walls, floors and roofs. The roof lights are facing north to prevent overheating and to provide good light into the main spaces. A heat-recovery unit has been installed to provide ambient temperatures and ventilation to all areas. The building achieved EPC level B, one credit low of level A. All internal walls and floors have been acoustically insulated to educational standard or better.

The building is in a Conservation Area and the external white render was a planning condition.

A through render system has been applied to reduce the maintenance cost.

The core team consisted of the client, contractor, architect, quantity surveyor and structural engineer. Due to regular site meetings and good communication amongst the core team, the construction works were carried out on time and within budget.

The client’s project team was directly involved with all decisions on site and had to report to the congregation at regular intervals about the progress and the budget and seek confirmation or decisions for any variations.

Some of these meetings required the architect to be present to explain the technicalities and any design changes or additions. The client was very pro-active and decisions were made

quickly to ensure the contractor could work smoothly on site.

The holiest place in the synagogue is the Ark, where the Torah scrolls are kept, and this was an item of absolute importance during the construction process. The ark was designed by ZSTa and built in timber by a local carpenter and painted in vibrant colours. It makes a bold statement in its rainbow hues, suggesting inclusion and diversity, proclaiming a welcoming message to all those who wish to journey with the community.

Due to the height and the hard finishes in the sanctuary, bespoke acoustic timber panels have been designed and installed to complement the Ark design and to improve speech intelligibility.

The Result The synagogue was completed in December 2015, and the community embarked on a new adventure with the opening of their redeveloped, state-of-the-art synagogue, which will bring them joy for many years to come. The opening

was a huge success, and the amount of positive comments entered in the visitor book reflect the satisfaction of the wider congregation.

The project is unique in the sense that it was a collaborative effort of the congregation, the core building team and the effort which every person involved invested into the scheme, creatively and financially. The project itself totally fitted in with BHPS’ ethos of inclusivity and interfaith: the architect was a German Sikh, the builders were Hungarian Catholics, the carpenter a Christian, and the principal of the building company (GCS Builders) is married to

contemporary refurbishment of a former gymnasium to create a welcoming multipurpose space for religious services, festivals and special commemorations, principally for the local Jewish community, while welcoming all faiths.

The judges particularly liked the clever use of natural light using roof lights and the innovative use of subtle tints in the light shafts to complement the colours of the modern light fittings.

Also of note was the sliding wooden screen in the Sanctuary, which conceals the Ark.

In June 2016 the design was recognised in the Sussex Heritage Awards and won in the Ecclesiastical Category. The awards, now in their 18th year, are designed to recognise and reward the highest-quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly built projects while encouraging the use of traditional skills and crafts.

As World War II rages, backstage in a provincial English theatre, an ageing, once-famous classical actor is troubled. 9 - 11 September, Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival is the UK’s newest and most daring jazz festival. Taking inspiration from long running avantgarde jazz festivals such as New York’s Vision Festival and Germany’s Moers Festival, it proposes a genuine alternative to mainstream festivals, providing exciting, left-field improvisation and deep jazz for those in the know, and those keen to learn.

INTERESTING TIMES Claire Cook from Independent Financial Advisors Talk Money looks at how the bank base rate affects investments

O

n 8th August the Bank of England (BoE) cut the bank base rate from 0.5% to an all-time low of 0.25%. This may be good news for borrowers, but equally bad news for savers, who have already endured many years of historically low interest rates. This is combined with BoE predictions that inflation (CPI) will be 0.8% for 2016, 1.9% in 2017, rising to 2.4% in 2018. If these projections are correct, this means that people relying on cash investments such as building society and interest-paying bank accounts could see the real value of their money reducing over time.

In recent times, with the introduction of a tax-free interest allowance of £1,000 per annum, some have abandoned their normal arrangements of a cash ISA and opted instead for a non-ISA account, which offers a higher rate of return.

Certain banks have been offering current accounts with higher interest rates on balances up to a certain limit. With careful planning some have managed to obtain a higher rate on an element of their savings. These accounts seem to come with caveats, such as the requirement

to pay a regular amount in each month and monthly standing orders being paid out. It often takes a bit of juggling, but many have found this worthwhile to achieve a higher rate on their savings.

“It is possible to arrange a stocks and shares ISA at a lower risk level” Some people have money invested in fixedrate accounts which they secured before the rate fall. A higher rate would have been secured at the time, but once the term ends, it may be difficult to find a new rate at a similar level.

It certainly seems like hard work for cash investors as they scratch around for a return on their money. Although many people in this situation are retired and have more time, this can seem like a job in itself.

It is a very difficult situation and could push people to move to higher risk investments

in order to see some returns. Some have considered transferring cash ISAs to a stocks and shares ISA. Although “stocks and shares” sounds high risk, the term does not necessarily mean that all of your investment is in the stock market. It is possible to arrange a stocks and shares ISA at a lower risk level. The investment value will fluctuate, but at a lower variance when compared to stocks and shares. Over time, however, the investment could possibly provide a higher level of growth than you can achieve in a cash investment. This may be worth considering.

Telscombe Distance: 4miles/6.5km Time: 1.5 hours Bus: 27 (Brighton & Hove Bus Company) Access: Slight inclines, mostly flat Route Instructions 1. From the bus stop adjacent to Downs Walk on Telscombe Road, walk down to the bridleway. which heads off at the bend at the junction of Telscombe Road and Kirby Road.

Follow the bridleway around the bend and past the cattle grid until you come to a gate. Follow the track round to the right until you reach a signpost.

2. Walk down the road through Telscombe Village, passing the church on your right and the Old Rectory on your left. Follow the road until you come to a bridleway on your left.

Go through the gate and follow the bridleway down into the valley, following the track. Go through the gate and follow the track to the right. Keep on the track, following it down into the farmyard.

3. When you come to a South Downs Way signpost ahead of you, turn left through the gate. Follow the path uphill through another gate and on until the top of the hill.

4. Do not pass through this gate, but turn left following the footpath along the field edge down into the valley. Go through the next gate and head up the hill. You will see Breaky Bottom Vineyard on your right as you walk up the hill.

5. Continue across the field, then keeping the dew pond and sheepfold to your left, head towards the centre of the field and towards a gate ahead.

6. Go through this gate and across another field to a third gate, after which you turn left onto the bridleway, which will take you on to Telscombe Tye. Go through the gate next to a reservoir and cross the fields through three more gates. There is a Dew Pond here, where you can stop and enjoy the view. Follow the bridleway back to the signpost at the top of the road and retrace your steps back to the bus stop.

A site in St Martin’s Place had previously been occupied by squatters and was in a state of some disrepair.

A proposal to put a modern three bedroom house in its place was initially rejected by Brighton & Hove Planners on the grounds of vibration (a nearby electricity sub-station); contamination (the site was a former garage); character and appearance (mainly three storey terraces in the vicinity) and inadequate amenity space.

SHW Planning took to discount these objections – even to the point of our team carrying out an amenity space assessment (pictured below) and found the new development would be 4m2 larger than any house on the street in terms of garden.

Research found a vibration study had been conducted on the edge of the substation and found no significant effect.

At the end of July a Planning Inspector found in favour of consenting the scheme on all grounds.

S

eptember is usually considered to be the end of summer, but surprisingly, it can often be an extension of summer, with warm sunny days that can be spent in our gardens. The September border is still a riot of colour, and although it is the beginning of autumn, there are lots of plants that are taking centre stage at this time of year. Many treats yet to be enjoyed in our gardens, like the Japanese anemones, ‘Verbena bonariensis’, ‘Rudbeckias’ and the beautiful ‘Echinacea purpurea,’ all providing our September gardens with autumn colour. The rudbeckias look like black-eyed daisies and will flower right through autumn and even into winter if the weather is kind.

Now is a good time to plant bulbs whilst the ground is still warm and easy to dig, before

the weather becomes colder. Bulbs, including crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths, can be planted now, but leave tulips until the end of October or even November.

Other spring–flowering biennials such as forget-me-nots and ‘erysimum’ can be planted now in borders or pots for a great spring show. Mixing these plants with tulip bulbs in a large container will provide you with a wonderful display next spring. Remember to plant the tulip bulbs first, and deeper, then the erysimum and forget-me-nots on top.

Paying a bit of attention to your garden now will keep it fresh and interesting. Continued dead-heading and cutting back plants that have finished flowering, then forking the borders will help towards the enjoyment of your autumn garden.

SHARING AND CARING Every foodie in the South East is talking about 64 Degrees, and Daniel Frickelton wants to know why...

T

he first thing you notice about 64 Degrees, the hole-in-the-wall eatery at the entrance to, or exit from, the Lanes, depending on whether you are coming or going, is the slightly irritatingly catchy name. Irritating because, like that tiny piece of gravel in your sandal, you can't ignore it. I quickly abandoned any theories relating to temperature – 64 degrees being unremarkable in any way from a cooking or boiling perspective – and called my old pal, Col. Bob, (retired) U.S. Army and general know-it-all. He hummed and hawed a bit and suggested that Reykjavik, Iceland would be at about 64 degrees of latitude. Close enough. A theory was born.

With a lovely lady in tow, I entered the restaurant with a spring in my step, confident that I had cracked the conundrum of the catchy name. We were seated at two of six high stools at the bar/counter top separating the open kitchen from the dining room. All other seating in the room consists of upholstered footstools, which, unlike our barstools, have no back or lumbar support. I thanked our hostess, Frankie, for giving us the geriatric option and turned my attention to the cool hipster whose kitchen I was invading. He was humming a Queen melody that was wafting gently through the room. You like Queen? he asked, pointing at 88 PORTFOLIO

an invisible speaker somewhere behind him. I assured him that everyone likes Queen, which appeared to resolve some internal conflict in the kitchen. So, is it the owner or head chef who is the Icelander? I asked, trying hard not to look too smug. Benny, our hot-chef for the

When I told him about my Reykjavik idea, he smiled compassionately and explained that at the owner’s previous establishment the bath (for cooking things) had got stuck on 64 degrees, so he named his restaurant after that. Thank you for sharing that, Benny. So much for theories.

The food concept at 64 Degrees is that two people share a succession of individually prepared dishes. As we were licking the last

morsels of the creamy, pungent mackerel amuse bouche off our fingers, we marvelled at the spectacle of slabs of rosy salmon being blackened by a blowtorch-wielding chef on the other side of the kitchen bar. Moments later, chunks of this magical, warm salmon sushi, garnished with pickled cucumber and dressed in a soy sauce laced subtly with chilli, would appear before us as our first dish. I covet the recipe for this amazing dressing.

On Frankie's recommendation, we had ordered a bottle of Grüner Veltliner, a very drinkable white we normally associate with Austria. This one was from New Zealand and was to its Austrian cousin what the All Blacks are to Hove Rugby Club. Not in the same league.

This bottle (Yealands Estate single vineyard Grüner Veltliner, 2014) had spectacular depth of rich, fruity flavour to complement everything from spicy fish to light meat dishes. I will be on the look-out for this little gem, but so far have only ever seen it in 64 Degrees.

The vision across the bar of Benny assembling some lucky couple's scallops snapped me out of my Grüner reverie. My dining companion's coolness towards scallops inversely complements my passion for these delectable fruits of the sea. In other words, I was looking forward to having my share and at

least half of hers as well. Would have been even better, I ventured to Benny-in-the-kitchen, if the orange roe sacs were still attached.

Smiling precociously, he shoves a tablespoon of an amber powder in my direction which he has been sprinkling over the scallops. Your roe sacs, he explains, dehydrated. Clever boy. Clever, clever cooking. As it happened, this was our scallop dish, served with leaves of deep-fried kale as delicate as fairy wings, the whole graced with a nutty, sweet, silky lemon grass purée. We had to force ourselves to eat it slowly and savour the many delicate flavours and aromas.

The vegetarian dish, a beetroot, grapefruit and walnut salad in a vinegar and garlic dressing, was an effective, delicious, palaterefreshing course bridging the fish and meat dishes, and a much sexier take on the simple lettuce leaves and light dressing often used in French cuisine.

With my gorgeous dining companion to my right and the Lady From Herts and her partner to my left, the cosiness of the bar area meant that Herts was but the distance from an elbow to a wrist from sitting in my lap, so she couldn't help noticing how we were swooning over the food and, of course, all the notes I was writing. She and her mate

were savouring a tagliatelle dish that they declared was “the best pasta dish they had ever eaten.” Mr Herts was trying to lick the plate. We were beginning to discuss how many of our grandchildren we might have to trade for a dish of this stuff when I noticed that Benny was giving me another of those

He finished the dish, gently blending the slow-cooked egg yolk and truffles into the pasta, shaved some parmesan over it and presto! What happened next was one of those moments all foodies live for. We had from the outset allowed the kitchen to choose our menu. Surprise us, we said. Show off. We're giving you lamb sweetbreads tonight, chirped Frankie. They're not usually on the menu. The gorgeous one asked if she wanted to know

what that contained, and I said no. She doesn't do offal, although what arrived may have changed her mind about that forever: small, piping-hot savoury marshmallows of fluffy goodness dusted in crumbs and blitzed in the deep fryer. These made their way down our gullets faster than a falling pound sterling, and were by some margin the star dish of the evening.

We rounded off our meal with a shared dish of cherry, pistachio and coconut, to which the kitchen added another surprise: a rum gummi (jelly) bear. When Mr Herts saw my reaction to the first bite of this morsel, he couldn't disguise his longing, and he didn't need to be asked twice if he would like to finish my bear.

Which was the first time I had ever shared my restaurant meal with a stranger. But 64 Degrees is like that: a sharing and caring kind of place that serves some of the best tucker we have eaten in Brighton, ever.

PS. Apparently, 64 degrees is about the perfect temperature for slow-cooking eggs.

I'll let you get to the bottom of that one.

It was only when I was in secondary school I discovered my love of baking. This interest in baking went from keen to obsessed. Since then, I have tried to reflect my parent’s mantra

to “always be fearless in the kitchen.” I have been baking for ten years and cooking for a lot longer. As a first generation baker, I aim to instil the same ethic into my children and hopefully have great cooks and, with any luck, a batch of second-generation bakers.”

MUSTARD KALE MAC AND CHEESE I am not averse to a massive bowl of mac and cheese for dinner, but it took a while to convince my family that sometimes this is OK: it doesn’t always have to be rice and curry, or curry and rice. I don’t mean the kind that comes out of a can and isn’t sure if it is mac and cheese or baby custard mixed with overcooked pasta – it doesn’t have to be like a school dinner nightmare. Proper home-cooked mac and cheese is warm, hearty and delicious. This recipe, with mustard and kale to add interest, makes for a delicious onepot meal.

Serves 6 Prep: 15 minutes Cook: 25 minutes Can be frozen

Method

Recipe

Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil, and cook the pasta for 3 minutes less than the recommended time on the packet. Drain and add the oil, stirring it through. This will stop the pasta sticking together.

500g pasta

•

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

•

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

•

3 cloves of garlic, crushed

•

1 teaspoon English mustard powder

•

3 tablespoons plain flour

•

250ml whole milk

•

250ml single cream

•

250g mature Cheddar cheese, grated

•

a large handful of kale leaves, chopped

•

50g Parmesan cheese, grated

•

freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C.

Melt the butter in a small pan over a medium heat, then add the garlic and mustard powder and cook for 1 minute.

Stir in the flour, and cook for another minute, mixing all the time.

Add the milk and the cream, and whisk until the sauce is smooth and lump-free.

Continue to whisk until the sauce thickens.

Take the pan off the heat, add the grated Cheddar cheese and leave it to melt, stirring occasionally.

Now tip the pasta and kale into an ovenproof dish, and pour over the sauce. Bake for 20 minutes, until the top is crisp and golden.

Sprinkle with the Parmesan and a good grind of black pepper to serve.

FETA AND DILL SAVOURY MUFFINS I know when you hear the word ‘muffin’ you probably think of the blueberry or chocolate chip variety.

However, muffins can be so much more. According to my husband, muffins are meant to be sweet, but I tend to veer in the direction of a savoury muffin accompanied by a sweet cup of tea – perhaps mainly to prove to him that I am always right. He took some convincing, because he’s not a feta cheese fan, but these are so good: the cooked feta melts down slightly in the muffin, keeping its distinctive salty flavour. The dill adds such a fresh taste, and the crunch of the seeds gives an extra dimension to the texture.

These can be eaten fresh out of the oven or cooled, sliced, smothered in cream cheese and topped with smoked salmon. And now when I say muffin, my husband answers, ‘Dill and feta, please!’

Makes 12 Prep: 15 minutes Cook: 20–25 minutes Can be frozen

Method

Recipe

Put the flours, baking powder and salt in a bowl, and stir everything together.

175g plain flour

•

50g wholewheat flour

Now add the milk, egg, cottage cheese, melted butter, feta cheese, mustard, dill and black pepper. Mix it all together and spoon into muffin cases.

2 ½ teaspoons baking powder

•

1 teaspoon fine salt

•

275ml whole milk

•

1 medium egg

•

100g cottage cheese

•

75g unsalted butter, melted and cooled

•

50g feta cheese, crumbled

•

½ teaspoon wholegrain mustard

•

2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

•

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

•

8 sundried tomatoes, chopped

•

25g pumpkin seeds

Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cases.

Top each muffin with a little chopped sundried tomato and sprinkle with the pumpkin seeds.

Bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes, or until a skewer inserted comes out clean.

STRICTLY STARRY As Strictly Come Dancing 2016 hits our TV screens once again this autumn, the battle for the Glitterball trophy is expected to feature the usual mix of soaps stars, pop singers and BBC favourites – with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. Here are a few of the contestants we know will be tripping the light fantastic Presenter and former pop star Louise Redknapp “I've sung in front of crowds of thousands before, but the idea of stepping out onto that famous dance floor with a world-class professional dancer gives me butterflies just thinking about it!

Louise was a former member of girl band Eternal before embarking on a highly successful solo career. BRIGHTON HOME TO BRITAIN’S MOST POPULAR MEDICAL SCHOOL Brighton and Sussex Medical School remains Britain’s most popular medical school, according to the annual National Student Survey. The survey found that 95 per cent of students were satisfied with their course. The survey, carried out by Ipsos Mori, generally targets finalyear undergraduates and, nationally, had a 72 per cent response rate, or 312,000 respondents. Students were asked 23 questions.

The medical school was beaten by only two higher education institutions – Buckingham University and the University of Law, both on 97 per cent.

The proportion of satisfied students at Sussex University rose to 89 per cent this year from 87 per cent. Meanwhile, 80 per cent of Brighton University students said that they were satisfied with their course. This was down from 83 per cent a year ago and below the national average of 86 per cent. At City College Brighton and Hove 78 per cent said that they were satisfied compared with 81 per cent a year ago.

Students from 155 higher education institutions, 190 further education colleges and 13 alternative providers of higher education took part in the survey. The aim is to provide valuable feedback for prospective students while helping universities and colleges to improve the education they offer.

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING

£80 MILLION SCHEME TO BUILD HOMES, SHOPS AND OFFICES IN HOVE Plans for an £80 million scheme to build homes, shops and offices on land by Hove Station and the Conway Street bus garage have been submitted

by Matsim Properties. The developer wants to build 188 flats, about 21,000 sq ft of grade-A office space and 2,500 sq ft of shops or small business units.

Matsim is also asking for planning permission to create a basement car park in its application to Brighton and Hove City Council. The scheme would mean demolishing three commercial units in Ellen Street on a site also bounded by Ethel Street, Conway Street and Fonthill Road.

In their place Matsim would build a mixed development ranging between four and seventeen storeys high. The developer has consulted extensively over the past year on the scheme, known as Hove Gardens.

Matsim director Simon Lambor said: “We hope that this can be the first phase and catalyst in the wider regeneration of the Hove Station Quarter, that can provide desperately needed homes and employment space for the city.”

The scheme would provide employment space for up to 500 people, bringing economic benefits for the area and financial benefits for the council.

2,100 NEW STUDENT HOMES APPROVED AT FALMER Sussex University has welcomed the approval given for 2,100 new student homes, along with a new student union building, at its Falmer campus. Brighton Kemp Town MP Simon Kirby also praised the decision.

The university’s registrar John Duffy said: “This is an important project for the university, so we’re very pleased with this outcome. This means that we will now be able to house more students in university-managed accommodation, which will take away some of the pressure of housing in the city.”

Mr Kirby, recently promoted to the ministerial post of Economic Secretary to the Treasury, said: “The university plays a very important role in our local economy, both directly and indirectly, and is looking to increase student numbers. It is right that it be able to expand to enable it to keep up with other leading universities and maintain its reputation as a centre of research excellence.”

Last year the university was granted outline consent for its campus masterplan, which includes the majority of this new student accommodation. Work on the site is expected to begin next January and be completed by 2020. The university has been working in collaboration with Historic England, Brighton and Hove City Council and other local bodies to ensure that the campus’ architectural legacy is not compromised. Last year Balfour Beatty were appointed as the approved bidder for the development and operation of the new accommodation.

e don’t realise how vital healthy, happy feet are until something goes wrong with them. Throughout life, foot problems caused by poorly-fitting shoes, infections, impact sports, our own physical structure or simply being on our feet too much can make us pretty miserable. Podiatrists and chiropodists are at the front (or bottom) line of our feet. This month, we take a look at what works in foot health.

teenage years can cause painful changes to joints, or nerve problems like Morton’s neuroma (a painful growth on nerves in the foot caused by long-term compression). Nearly all adult foot problems can be treated or even cured by a trained specialist – having shoes correctly sized, tailored orthotics (shoe inserts) to correct structural problems, exercise and physiotherapy can all make a real difference long before the need for surgery or painful injections.

FEET ACROSS THE LIFE-COURSE Foot health is crucial throughout our lives. For children and young people, its vital to diagnose any mechanical (structural) problems early on in order to correct the problem as children grow, and reduce the impact on the musculo-skeletal system in adulthood. Shoes should fit correctly, as poor fit can cause issues: Foot bones start out as softer cartilage, not maturing until we reach around 18 years, and the wrong footwear can cause deformities and structural problems such as claw toes, bunions or ingrowing toenails in later life. Verrucae are a frequent issue for children and young people; swift treatment will reduce the risk of passing the infection on to others. Teenage years are also the point at which habits change, and poor hygiene – wearing the same socks and trainers for days (or weeks!) on end, for example – can cause odour and fungal infections.

Adults need to monitor foot health: issues that began in childhood can start to show symptoms in adult life. Problems related to gait (the way you step when you walk or run) can manifest in exercise-related injury to the foot, leg or back. Too-tight shoes worn throughout

Foot pain can reduce people’s mobility and fitness, which in turn can impact on their independence, wellbeing and other areas of health. And other aches and pains of getting older can make it harder for us to care for our own feet: cutting nails and avoiding dry, cracked or infected heels can be difficult if mobility is limited. People with some long-term conditions such as diabetes need to take extra care: Diabetes can cause nerve damage in feet and hands, meaning that without close attention, symptoms can be missed until they become more serious.

STEPPING OUT WITH DAY-TO-DAY CARE There are a number of simple things we can all do to keep our feet healthy: ensure shoes fit well (get children’s shoes professionally measured

and fitted), and look for signs of uneven wear on heels or soles as this can tell you if you might have a gait problem. Keep feet clean and fresh, change socks and footwear regularly, and try to spend time barefoot each day. Keep toenails medium-length, cut square across the top and resist the temptation to cut them too short or curve the edges. Keep an eye out for infections like verrucae and athletes foot, and treat when necessary. Use a pumice stone or file in the bath to keep skin soft and smooth (cracked heels can be very painful) – a professional pedicure just once or twice a year can really help to keep your feet in top shape.

Podiatrists and chiropodists are trained in the diagnosis and management of lower limb and foot problems. If pain or skin problems persist, start with your GP or make an appointment privately with a podiatrist or chiropodist: A qualified specialist will be able to ask the right questions and pinpoint the problem. For foot or leg pain issues, it can be a good idea to take a pair of worn trainers or shoes with you, to help in the assessment of your gait. But above all, don’t suffer in silence: Foot pain doesn’t have to be a part of life at any age.

GET FIT FOR PURPOSE Mid-summer is the height of the golfing season. The rough is tough, fairways and greens firm and fast, and many erstwhile keen punters are hobbling about with a variety of injuries.

he statistics are depressing: 75-80% of us will suffer back pain at some stage of our lives, and for golfers the figures are probably even higher. A cursory glance at the “most common golf injuries” via your search engine corroborates back and a plethora of rotational and joint injuries as The Great Leveller among golfers.

Although golf is often described as a lowimpact sport, a typical 18-hole round involves walking five or six miles, depending on your accuracy, for about four hours and hitting 70 to 100 shots from a variety of lies and (awkward) positions, often in windy and wet conditions.

Despite the humorous characterisations of golf as “pasture pool” and the like, a round of golf requires stamina, endurance and a great deal of skill. The achievement of a solid, repeatable

swing requires many hours of practice, many hundreds of repeated, rotational movements of joints and spines, all of which places considerable strain and stress on the body.

Just look around you in the clubhouse after your next round. Listen to the post-round chatter, natter and the litany of physical complaints. A few “did better on the front nine,” but then their backs started playing up on the back nine. Maybe that's why they call it the back nine. Another complains that his knee keeps popping out of joint through impact, making his shots, um, inconsistent. You notice that he is overweight, has no back swing due to inability to turn his hips and tends to slam down mercilessly on the ball, turning only his shoulders. His back, of course, is about as supple as a slab of pavement. Being a friend,

you commiserate. You have problems of your own.

The thing is, most of these injuries are preventable. Regular fitness routines, including stretching, and exercises addressing the major muscle groups – especially the back – will help keep you off the injury bench and on the golf course, where you belong. The Golf Pro replies Here are a few exercises to try to improve your golf game, but don’t forget to warm up properly and stretch afterwards.

BACK On the course: Late in the round, when the pressure is on, the last thing a golfer needs is to be hunched over. A strong back and shoulders provide the posture needed in the address position and the all-important ability to repeat your swing.

In the gym: On the golf course, back problems are as common as bogeys. Nearly every muscle in the back is employed during a swing. There are four things to remember when working on your back: stretch first, squeeze your stomach muscles while you execute the exercise (the ab muscles complement the back), exhale as you perform the rep (not after) and avoid being hunched over.

Seated Row Machines: This is one of the best exercises for golfers. Sit tall and upright. Keep your shoulders back. Now pull the handles toward you as if you were rowing. If the machine you're using allows you to work one arm at a time, do that.

ARMS On the course: Strengthening your arm muscles

will increase your clubhead speed, which will lead to increased length off the tee. Stronger arms also help you execute shots around the green and from the rough.

In the gym: Many arm exercises can be done without the aid of gym equipment, although it helps to have a flat bench and some dumbbells handy. It should come as no surprise that arm strength, stamina and flexibility will definitely help your game. I don't recommend using heavy weights. This will make the muscles bulky and can impede your swing.

Triceps Dip: Using a flat bench, go from a straight-arm position to having your arms bent at the elbow at a 90-degree angle, then push back up. Keep the back straight.

Dumbbell Shoulder Press: As you push up, keep the palms facing each other. Use a weight you can easily lift 12 to 20 times.

LEGS On the course: During the backswing, the legs are your foundation. During the downswing, the legs are the engine that powers the machine.

And by the end of a round, the stamina you build in your legs can be the difference between winning and losing a match--especially if you are walking with a golf bag on your back.

In the gym: The best golfers will tell you that without a solid base, their swing would crumble. Balance and strength in the thigh, calf and glutes will lead to a powerful, fluid swing. Cardiovascular exercises like jogging

will help, but some weight training coupled with stretching is a must for this part of the body.

Dumbbell Shoulder Press: Use one leg instead of two to improve strength and stability in your weaker leg. Work the thigh, calf and glutes by pushing the sled up the incline. Then repeat.

Single-Leg Extension: From a seated position, extend the legs away from the body and then back down to work the thighs.

ABS On the course: The rotation of the torso is enhanced by strong abs. Strong abs increase the speed with which the body unwinds, adding distance to your shots. They also provide stamina to repeat the rotation and increase accuracy.

In the gym: Not only do the abdominal muscles play an important role in the swing, they also complement the back muscles. Strong abs will help you get more mileage out of a bad back. Doing a lot of reps and stretches are the key.

Abdominal Machines: An exercise ball is not a well-known exercise equipment for abs, however it is great for varied and efficient exercises. As we have to use control, balance and motion, it helps to train and improve abdominal muscles. With the help of the stability ball we can do common exercises such as sit ups, twists, ab curls, side stretches and crunches more efficiently and safely.

PLAYER POWER In advance of the eagerly anticipated Ryder Cup tournament in the USA at the end of September, Portfolio catches up with legendary golfer, Gary Player

W

ith sixty-three years and 165 wins under his belt, Gary Player’s professional career has ensured he will forever remain one of golf’s legendary names. Nowadays, he’s casting his eye over the current crop of golfing greats and seeing who’s ready to step up to the void left by the likes of Nicklaus, Palmer and himself…

At 80 years old, you would forgive Gary Player for taking some time to just sit in his robe and slippers and take it easy – but that kind of attitude wouldn’t even cross the octogenarian’s mind. Player, who has been known by the apt nickname Mr Fitness, is still in top shape, and is rumoured to do a thousand sit-ups every day, as well as 300lb leg presses and an hour on the treadmill.

“It gives me such a thrill that, at 80, I can go out and shoot an average of 70 on a normal golf course, and I can beat most 30-year-olds in the gym,” explains Player proudly. “It just gives me a great sense of satisfaction when I work hard, and that keeps inspiring me to maintain that level of training and to be able to continue to appreciate everything in life.”

Alongside these comparisons to his younger colleagues, Player maintains that his “zest for life” should stand as an example, not just to fellow golfers, but society as a whole.

“I have a tremendous appreciation and gratitude for the fact that I’m healthy,” he says.

“The most important thing in your life is your health, and most people don’t worry about health and pay enough attention to it.”

“The South African legend is experienced enough to know that in the world of golf, predictions are a tricky business to get right” As one of golf’s ‘Big Three’ of his era – alongside Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus – Player has notched up success after success in the course of his 63-year professional career, not least as part of an elite group of golfers who can lay claim to the career Grand Slam of winning all of the sport’s major championships in a single calendar year. Such an esteemed place in the history of the sport means Player is in prime position to run the rule over the modern pretenders to his, Palmer's and Nicklaus’ throne – namely, the budding rivalry between Rory McIlory, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth.

“The rivalry will be very different to the one Arnold, Jack and I had,” he says. “We travelled on the same plane and we stayed in each other’s homes. We had a friendship. Today, it’s a different game; it’s a big business now, and it’s all done individually and on individual terms.”

And while current world number one Day is ineligible due to his Australian heritage, Spieth and McIlroy may well get the chance to ignite their personal duel at this year’s Ryder Cup. While it’s fair to say Spieth’s career has had its ups and downs in recent months – his missing out on the coveted Green Jacket at this year’s Masters springs immediately to mind – Player has noticed an element to the young American’s game that could give him the edge over his opposition when the Ryder Cup starts at the end of September.

“Jordan Spieth is the best putter – and in golf we say, ‘beware of the best putter’,” Player concludes. “If you asked me whether I would like to be the best driver or the best striker of the ball out there from tee to green, or would you like to be the best putter, I would take being best putter every day.”

to get right, and he cites one of the sport’s most controversial figures to back up his point.

“You can never say who is going to be good in the future. We never thought we’d see someone like Tiger Woods, who was on his way to becoming the best player ever until he had his trouble,” he states.

“Sometimes you get start times in the morning when it’s sunny and calm, and then in the afternoon it’s windy, so players are potentially competing under vastly different conditions. It’s a big difference.”

Player knows the capricious nature of the game all too well. A personal haul of nine major titles is impressive enough, but it could have been more had a fortunate Arnold Palmer not pipped him at Augusta in 1962 with two long-range putts at the 16th and 17th holes to snatch the win.

“I was two shots ahead with three holes to go, and he missed the green at 16. Only people who have been there can appreciate this,” Player reminisces of Palmer’s dramatic victory. “He had a putt of at least 68 feet; Arnold hit it a hundred miles an hour, it hit the flag and went in. Then at 17, he holed something like a 28-foot putt. Normally, you can try a hundred unsuccessful putts: that involves a lot of luck.”

In spite of his semi-serious belligerence – “I was second in seven majors,” he cries, “seven!” – Player’s impeccable record speaks for itself. “You never look back and say what could have happened,” he muses.

“I’m the only player who has ever won the Grand Slam on the regular tour and the senior tour, so how can I ever complain about golf?”

And while Player admits that the sport he loves needs to build on Danny Willett’s surprise underdog victory at this year’s Masters, with someone stepping up to the plate and delivering both a Grand Slam and a “shot in the arm” for golf, this heir-apparent will have to go some way before they can emulate the glories of Player’s personal golfing hero, the legendary Ben Hogan.

“Ben Hogan won nine majors; he went to war for five years, he then came back and had a terrible automobile accident, and basically he was never able to play at his best for three years,” he says. “He couldn’t play, and he still won nine! And he played with junk equipment and on golf courses that were often in terrible condition. It’s amazing. I’ve watched the old tapes and I’ve never seen anybody hit the ball like Ben Hogan, ever.”

Having said that, the future of the sport, according to Player, looks bright when considering the attitude of the modern trio of golfing greats.

“What Jordan Spieth did at the age of 21 was very, very remarkable,” he concludes. “He behaves so well, and the same applies to Jason Day and McIlroy. They all dress nicely, speak nicely and behave well: golf is in great hands with these young men.”

ritain’s most successful Olympian and Nissan ambassador, Sir Chris Hoy, has given some of Team GB and ParalympicsGB’s athletes some extra motivation to win gold with the announcement that the car maker will reward all Nissan sponsored athletes who win a gold medal at the Rio Games with a special gold-wrapped, allelectric Nissan LEAF. Sir Chris launched the initiative and unveiled the first gold Nissan LEAF at the Lee Valley Velopark, the setting for some of his own goldmedal-winning moments.

Nissan ambassadors, including the likes of heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, gymnast Max Whitlock and multi-gold-medal winners David Weir CBE and Richard Whitehead MBE, will have the chance to drive away from Rio 2016 in the world’s best-selling 100% electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF.
