DIRECTOR

As we kick-off 2025, I’m excited to share a few of the amazing events we have planned.

Our programming is a celebration of our City’s vibrant culture and creativity, and we look forward to bringing these incredible experiences to you!

Our 4th annual Jazz Fest Pompano Beach returns to the beach on January 24th and 25th for a two-day extravaganza. We’re very proud of the incredible growth of this signature event, which will feature seven headliners including Jazz Funk Soul, Joshua Redman Group, Judith Hill, Randy Brecker, and many talented local artists. Foodies will also appreciate this festival with its Pompano Beachbased offering of delicious bites and beverages. As always, this event is free to the public, so arrive early and bring your lawn chairs and blankets (VIP seating also available).

Ushering in a new year means new ways to engage and entertain, starting with a unique karaoke event that will bring a fresh twist to the community favorite. We’re also honored to present our first-ever Chinese New Year celebration, which will be a spectacular showcase of rich traditions and modern creativity.

Celebrating Black History Month (BHM) has always been an essential part of our programming, and this year, we continue to shine the spotlight on the incredible achievements and contributions of Black artists and leaders. One of many examples is a compelling exhibit, “Crowns and Trophies” by artist Chris Clarks, that explores Black identity through the symbolism of Black hair and deer antlers.

Launching a new professional theatre company last year was a huge undertaking, and we are elated by the tremendous reception audiences have given Pompano Players. As the season continues, we have a variety of delightful shows scheduled, including Jerry’s Girls, a lavish musical revue featuring the iconic songs of Jerry Herman’s biggest Broadway shows including Hello, Dolly!, Mame, La Cage aux Folles and more.

Jean Caze

Jean Caze, a Haitian-American trumpeter from Queens, NY, has become a prominent jazz artist, blending jazz and world music.

Known for collaborations with legends like Herbie Hancock, Caze discovered trumpet at nine and honed his skills at the Manhattan School of Music. Touring globally and dedicated to teaching, Caze’s influence in jazz and world music continues to grow.

PUBLIC ART pompano beach

Galactic bloom Since the Public Art Committee’s inception in 2012, the City has acquired sculptures, murals, wrapped traffic boxes, and even created an underwater sculpture garden.

Pompano Beach Arts worked with Tyler FuQua Creations (TFC) to create a light pole sculpture that is located in Old Town at 11 NE 1st St. entitled Galactic Bloom. This sculpture represents, as the artist describes it, a space plant. With its whimsical nature, the story of the space plants states that they first appeared in Portland Oregon in 2000. In 2024, a seed ended up traversing the US and ended up in Pompano Beach!

The plant seems to have evolved slightly along the way, resulting in this Galactic Bloom! This space plant stands about 12 feet tall and has 4 blossoms at various heights and is made out of stainless steel.

This is not the first time Tyler FuQua Creations has worked with Pompano Beach.

Tyler and his team created Mechan H2O, a sculpture representing a robot scuba diver, which was originally placed on-land for a year before being sunk and attached to the Lady Luck in Shipwreck Park.

The City’s Public Art Committee meets every third Thursday at 5 pm at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. Meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to join!

The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is delighted to introduce the 2024/2025 class of our Artists in Residence (AiR) program at the historic Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA).

The AiR Program provides artists with studio space to create new work, collaborate with fellow resident artists, and engage with the community.

This dynamic and diverse group of artists will be in residence though June, and we will present each as an “Artist of the Month,” offering them the opportunity to showcase their work and create unique programs to attract art lovers to BaCA.

Nino Liguori has always enjoyed telling stories through his paintings, which are visual parables and allegories. His work alludes to art history, design, innovation, and humanity itself, intertwining fable and fact, imagination and realism. An art educator, he has worked with diverse socio-economic and racial

groups in Broward County and was twice a finalist for Visual Arts Educator of the Year.

Liguori advanced his painting studies by obtaining a master’s degree in Europe and Asia. He studied at The Academie de Beaux Arts in Paris, collaborated with art collectives in Rome, and learned brush and breathing techniques in East Asia. His artwork has been featured in New York Magazine and Hi-Fructose Magazine. Honoring both his Italian heritage and the storytelling nature of his work, he signs his paintings “ALIGUORI.”

With a lifelong passion for art and a mission to expand artistic access, Constance Ivana uses her creative voice to tackle issues of social justice and Black history, primarily through vibrant works in spray paint and acrylics. Currently an artist-in-residence at History Fort Lauderdale, her pieces are often imbued with messages of hope and encouragement.

After a challenging experience with postpartum depression, Book turned to her craft as a source of solace and healing. Inspired by the Woodstock era and the inherent restorative power of color, she creates yarn art that sparks joy and inner peace. Her works have been exhibited at galleries throughout South Florida’s Tri-County area.

Alyssa Book is a Cuban American fiber artist who uses rug tufting techniques to create one-of-a-kind, tactile works of art. Based in South Florida, Book’s vibrant style uses bold lines and bright colors to evoke a sense of childlike wonder.

A retired Broward County educator with 21 years of teaching experience, she transitioned to HR recruiting. Ivana is a regular volunteer with the City of Fort Lauderdale and has fostered collaborations with a wide range of organizations, including the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Art Prevails, Art 13, Art n Soul, Heal the Planet, numerous schools, independent artists, and various nonprofits. Beyond selling her artwork, Ivana actively engages the community by hosting painting parties and workshops, and creating impactful murals.

We are a nation of laws and Nino Liguori, ALIGUORI will be taking his allegorical oil paintings to demonstrate the unexplored, contradictory, or commonly misconstrued nature of our most fundamental birthrights. The United States is not the nation it was when James Madison and Thomas Jefferson agreed on the Bill of Rights. ALIGUORI aims to demonstrate where we might be now and moreover, where we may be headed.

A vibrant exhibition that showcases Anthony Burks’ works exploring wildlife, women, and abstract forms, celebrating Black creatives.

The exhibition spans Bailey Contemporary Arts and Pompano Beach Cultural Center.

Includes an artist talk on February 6.

Chris Clark’s exhibition at Ali Cultural Center explores Black identity through the symbolism of Black hair and deer antlers.

Using acrylic, oil, ink, and spray paint, he explores the rich culture and history of the Black community across the diaspora and the social issues affecting them today. For Clark, reflecting the human figure is very powerful, which is why he uses graphic-style portraiture and figurative works to depict Black life in America through his personal lens of a Black man, husband, and father.

Reflections of Rock Hill and Sumter is a heartfelt art exhibit that celebrates the enduring influence of two remarkable women, Emma B. Cathcart of Rock Hill, S.C., and Carolyn T. McKay of Sumter, S.C., on the artist’s life and identity.

Through a series of evocative works, the exhibit reflects on cherished childhood memories, inviting viewers to experience the gardens, lessons, and love shared by these influential grandmothers.
