A LETTER FROM THE

DIRECTOR

We’re embarking on a bountiful season filled with fan favorites, new offerings, and immersive experiences! With four venues, plus our vibrant outdoor community events including Old Town Untapped and Green Market Pompano Beach, we’ve got something for everyone!

New to our roster is a haunting Halloween experience featuring Edgar Allen Poe’s most chilling works come to life in a maze of horrors, culminating in a mesmerizing and macabre performance of his classic poem The Raven by a ghostly vision of the famed writer. Continuing with this interactive and immersive trend, we heard you were dying to have more Murder Mystery events, so this year we have a couple of killer nights planned, including an awesome 80s thriller and a sparkling holiday whodunnit. More theater was also a top request, and now we’re thrilled to introduce our own professional company, the Pompano Players. Featuring a rich season filled with hilarious comedies and enchanting musicals, we look forward to raising the curtain on this exciting endeavor!

Our commitment to bringing you unforgettable concerts continues with an eclectic and exciting lineup. From Soulful Sundays to our Living Room Concert Series, to A Taste of Jazz and beyond, we are attracting an outstanding and diverse array of performers to our stages.

In addition, this year, we have booked some sensational national tribute acts that will take us on a nostalgic musical journey. The power of the visual arts is always a prime focus, as we mount exhibitions that enlighten and inspire us through beauty and thought-provoking content. Encouraging your artistic adventures with our classes and workshops also informs our programming, as we love seeing what you create!

Encouraging imagination and innovation is the essence of our Artists in Residence (AiRs) program at Bailey Contemporary Arts Center. We are so proud of the impact this initiative has had on the artists who have participated in past years, and now we welcome eight outstanding new artists as they embark on a season of creative growth. We know you will enjoy interacting with them at Old Town Untapped, featured exhibitions, and other community events. We hope this brief overview has enticed you to want to learn more. We encourage you to visit our website at www.pompanobeacharts.org and sign up for our newsletter so you can be in the know about all the latest entertainment, celebrations and holiday events.

Sincerely

Hazel K. Armbrister Memorial

Since the Public Art Committee’s inception in 2012, the City has acquired sculptures, murals, wrapped traffic boxes, and even created an underwater sculpture garden. Pompano Beach Arts worked with Brodin Studios to create a memorial for Hazel K. Armbrister. This memorial, in the form of a bronze bust, resides in the Ali Cultural Center’s Hazel K. Armbrister Courtyard. Ms. Armbrister exemplified a steadfast dedication to her community throughout her lifetime. Without her advocacy, The Historic Ali Cultural Arts Center would not have been preserved and transformed into the vibrant cultural hub it is today. This bust honors her commitment to preserving the community’s history.

pompano beach PUBLIC ART program

Ms. Armbrister’s legacy endures through her unwavering commitment to community service, education, and advocacy. While her absence leaves a void, her impact remains deeply woven into the fabric of her community.

For more information on the City’s Public Art Program, and to be involved in upcoming art projects, please contact Laura Atria 954.545.7800, #3813, or go to the City’s Public Art website at www.pbpublic. com and sign up for our Artist Network.

The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is delighted to introduce the 2024/2025 class of our Artists in Residence (AiR) program at the historic Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA).

The AiR Program provides artists with studio space to create new work, collaborate with fellow resident artists, and engage with the community. This dynamic and diverse group of artists will be in residence though June, and we will present each as an “Artist of the Month,” offering them the opportunity to showcase their work and create unique programs to attract art lovers to BaCA.

Originally from Spain, Florencia Clement de Grandprey has been living and working in Fort Lauderdale, FL, since 2004. A self-taught mixed media figurative artist, her mission is to empower and inspire through positive and meaningful artwork.

She has been painting full-time since 2014. Initially, she painted on canvas and incorporated discontinued fabric and paper samples, to create backgrounds and “dress” her subjects. Shortly after, she discovered she could paint directly on upholstery fabric and area rugs and fell in love with this new medium. Through her artwork, she celebrates who we are and everything that makes us unique, perfectly imperfect beings, by bringing out our strengths and our beauty.

Angelica Clyman is a South Florida artist who is interested in the history of mundane or largely forgotten spaces. Her work is deeply influenced by growing up in Broward County, a place that has experienced dramatic changes in the past century. She works in various media, exploring different moments in the life cycles of places.

Visiting abandoned sites and collecting ephemera are an integral part of her practice, using painting, sculpture, and printmaking to tell stories and preserve memory. Her solo exhibitions include Things Look Bright All Over (BC South Gallery) and Land of Sunshine (IS Projects) and her work is in the permanent collection of the Miami Children’s Museum. A graduate of New World School of the Arts (BFA) and Florida International University (MFA), she currently teaches studio art at Broward College, and is the director of the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Mark Viau attended Wayne State University on a fine arts scholarship. As the father of triplets, Mark’s journey through life has been both dynamic and enriching.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Viau reignited his passion for art, channeling his experiences into a vibrant and expressive body of work. A multimedia artist with classic fine art skills, Viau creates pieces that are distinguished by their colorful layers and depth. His work invites viewers into a vivid world where traditional techniques meet contemporary innovation.
