Every last weekend in January, St. Moritz turns into the world capital of polo: Since 1985, when snow polo had its world premiere here, teams from around the world compete for the coveted de GRISOGONO Trophy on the frozen lake of St. Moritz.

The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz is the world’s only high-goal tournament on snow. The three days of the tournament stand for high-class polo played against the magnificent backdrop of the snowcapped mountains of the Engadin Valley and social events both on the lake and in the first-class hotels in St. Moritz.

In 2019, more than 15,000 spectators experienced a world of sports, marked by elegance, speed, and the traditional British sporting spirit. Put simply: tradition – class – hospitality – emotions!

The tournament culminates with the small and the grand finale on Sunday.

During all matches, total concentration, dexterity, courage and endurance are required from the world’s elite players as much as from their horses. The challenge of playing on snow, the unique location at 1850 metres above sea level and the sophistication of St. Moritz combine to make the tournament one of its kind.

Melissa Ganzi made history as the first lady player to win the tournament in St. Moritz at the 35th Snow Polo World Cup 2019 How did you get started in polo?

I have been involved in the equestrian community most of my life. I grew up in pony club, evented and showed a bit, but I found my true passion in polo!

In December 2000, my father-in-law Wally Ganzi, who played polo, bought me my first polo pony for my birthday and as they say, the rest is history. My family owns Grand Champions Polo Club and Santa Rita Polo Farm in Wellington and Aspen Valley Polo Club in Colorado. It’s a great family sport.

My husband, Marc, and our children, Grant and Riley all play and enjoy the time we spend together in the sport.

What do you enjoy about polo?

I love the family atmosphere.

Not only does my entire family play, but the world’s top players all have children involved in the game.

The sport is passed on from generation to generation which helps the sport thrive. Right now at Grand Champions, the world’s greatest player Adolfo Cambiaso and two of his children, Mia and Poroto, are playing in all tournament levels. There’s no greater joy than watching your children share your love of the game and passion for the horses.

What sort of physical training do you go through?

I have found when you get older and still compete at a high level, you need to listen to your body more. I’m not a kid anymore. Your body takes a beating playing in this game. I follow a stretching, training and physical therapy regimen.

I love my exercise bike and I work out in the morning in our exercise room to a great view of one of the polo fields adjacent to our home.

Never enough. We have a breeding operation in Ocala and Santa Rita Polo Farm so I am always excited when we bring new horses into the world.

We have more than 400 horses that play grass, beach, snow and arena polo.

I love watching our green horses progress and move through our program to make it to the field.

As I watch them I pick the ones that I believe will be future super stars.

Like our young players these horses are the future of the sport.

How has the sport changed over the years you have played?

I think the sport is still evolving. I am thrilled to see so many young girls and women playing in the sport. It is the largest growing sector in polo today. I am also excited about all the new additions in the sport including the World Polo League that begins in early February. My husband Marc, Robert Jornayvaz of Valiente Polo Farm and myself co-founded the 26goal league to fill a void and preserve the highest level of polo in the U.S. The players and fans are all excited about the new league and I am very honored to be playing for team Flexjet. © Tony Ramirez-imagesofpolo

How do you prepare before a match?

I make sure I start the day off with cold pressed celery juice and I stay hydrated throughout the day which is very important. I love to get to my game early, get settled in the players’ tent, prepare my equipment, make my horse list and talk to my grooms and teammates. I enjoy the social aspect and camaraderie among players. I check in with my vet and grooms on a regular basis. My Horses are my partner on the field and are the biggest part of the game.

What advice do you have for the next generation, particularly for those hoping to follow in your footsteps as a polo player?

Don’t get discouraged. There are so many opportunities in the sport. We have The Polo School in Wellington and Aspen that teaches all ages and ability levels and offers scholarships. If you have a passion for horses and the sport, willing to put in the time and work, and don’t give up, you will succeed. You will have your good days and bad days, and may not get to 10 goals, the highest pinnacle of the sport, but the journey is a wonderful ride for men, women and children.

I am so proud of my daughter Riley, a freshman at Georgetown University, who followed in my footsteps and now is an excellent player competing on the college level. I love being a role model for my daughter and other young girls out there who want to pursue the sport and their love of horses.

What is yourphilosophy?

Follow your passion and live life to its fullest. My passion happens to be horses, polo and my family. I want to give back to this sport as much as it’s given me and my family throughout the years.

I want to make a difference and create opportunities for people and make the sport better. It’s not always about winning and losing.

It’s leaving a legacy for people in your life and the sport, and trying to make it better than it was when you started playing.

To make a change, Hublot took up residence at 1,000 metres above sea level to celebrate a 2,000 year-old sport: polo. Recognised as the highest tournament in Europe, the Hublot Polo Gold Cup marched to the beat of the Swiss watchmaker for the 11th consecutive year. For four days, Gstaad and its aerodrome’s legendary Bernese grass field, with its air of Argentine pampas, welcomed four teams with a total handicap of 14—the highest level played on grass in Switzerland—and almost 6,000 spectators. The chukkers played to the rhythm of hooves and mallets, officially timed by Hublot, who declared the Clinique la Prairie team as the winner of this 24th edition.

Lux Afrique Polo Day was a spectacular event, held at Ham Polo Club Europe’s foremost African polo event graced London for the second time today at the prestigious Ham Polo Club, hosting a glamorous crowd of polo aficionados and those celebrating the style and joie de vivre of African culture.

A sea of well heeled guests, mostly head to toe in African inspired finery, proudly strutted one of the oldest polo clubs in the United Kingdom, to the soundtrack of Afrobeats and Fela Kuti, as Lux Afrique firmly marked its territory as the go-to annual African polo day.

Being so much more than a sporting event, but a celebration of African refinement and sense of occasion, the Lux Afrique Polo Day offered a myriad of attractions, all adding to the glamour and fun of the day. Fine dining of exquisite African cuisine, shopping lounge and VIP tent.

After the match closing, and the prize giving – which of course involved the traditional spraying of champagne – the crowd voted on the pick for ‘Best Dressed’ at the event. While the competition was stiff, given the abundance of fashionably dressed attendees, a ‘best dressed man’ and a ‘best dressed woman’ were selected.

With the match game and set, the guests proceeded to enjoy themselves in true African spirit, as they danced the rest of the afternoon away to the live band, fronted by Nigerian legend Dele Sosimi.

The Polo itself was a thrilling affair with two opposing teams with similar handicaps battling it out in front of a captivated crowd, who paused their mingling and revelry to enjoy the spectacle.

The match was opened by Lux Afrique founder Alexander Amosu alongside the Director of The Sofa and Chair Company.

Team Africa was narrowly defeated by Team Rudo – aka The Rest of the World – 4/3. The honour of ‘Most Valued Player’ was awarded to British born Louise Brown, who plays polo both in the UK and Argentina, while the title of ‘Best Playing Pony’ was awarded to Illuminado.

Are you planning more collaborations with jewelry designers to create exclusive collections for MAYORS? DH: We're constantly looking to build new partnerships and collaborations with the most exciting jewelry brands and designers.

There's so many interesting new things going on, the jewelry market always looks to stay in line with changes in the culture and trends in the fashion world.

What should I expect if I come into your newly opened flagship in Merrick Park?

DH: MAYORS has always been about the amazing selection of timepieces and jewelry and the service provided by our sales professionals. The new flagship in Merrick Park creates an environment for us to be

able to extend these two critical components of our business. The new displays throughout to present the collections at their best. There is also a welcoming hospitality area where clients can relax, enjoy refreshments and talk with our sales professionals in a more relaxed atmosphere.

What's in store for the future of MAYORS? DH: Our objective is to renovate and upgrade all of the MAYORS stores to the same high standards as Merrick Park within the next 24 months. Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you start your career?

I graduated at the University of Florence with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture in 1998 and immediately after that I obtained a Master Degree in “Yacht Design” at the same University. In 1999 I joined the Princess Cruises Design Center where I designed beautiful and luxury cruise ships, working at every level of the design.

In 2003 I joined the Intermarine Group where I experienced in Military vessels and Fast Patrol Boat winning a National Competition with the 13 feet.Three years later I joined the Admiral Shipyard, a premier yacht building company, designing and managing aluminum high performance superyachts.

In 2007, I joined Ferretti Group where I designed the interiors of several luxury yachts, managing the construction process for all the brands of Ferretti Group. I developed working relationships with specialist suppliers, craftsmen and Italian specialized artisans and developing partnership with the most important furniture firm in Italy.

In 2012 I was appointed Architect and Interior Designer for the Americas, and I moved to Miami where I established a specialized interior design center and capability for Americas. I oversee the design process of Ferretti Group vessels maintaining the standards of excellence established by the company and the needs and demands of the U.S. market, leading the interior design and configuration for all American inventory for over $100m per year.

I was also in charge for the Design and Project Management of the Ferretti Group Retail Stores globally, set up in Palm Beach (FL), Miami Beach Marina (FL), Newport Beach (CA), Bahia Mar (FL), Newport Beach (CA), Mexico City (Mexico, Hong Kong (China), Lima (Peru’).

What do you think are the main design elements to consider when it comes to designing a superyacht?

First of all is really important to understand how the client will use his yacht, and which are the feelings he is looking for when he stays onboard, and he sails. The second step is listening very carefully which is his preferred style, interior mood, preferred colors.. etc.

The important elements to consider first of all is the floor, since all time on the yacht is shoes off, the second is the ceiling height, that in some yachts, is not so relevant, and in this case is necessary to use abundance of undirect lights, and reflecting materials as high gloss lacquer finish. The most important thing by the way, is keeping the strong connection with the sea and the exteriors, in every cabin, and commons spaces.

You are not only designing yachts, you have also residential projects, what are the most important design elements there?

I use a lot natural materials, and I think is important as in the yachts, in the residential as well, to be surrounded by the elements that give you a certain emotion and feeling as the leather, stone, wood, cotton, linen. In yachts you can touch almost everything around you due to the limited volumes of the interiors, that allow to have a direct contact with ceilings, partitions, etc.. and even if the residential projects sometimes for the double height ceiling, for example, this connection is not so easy, it is still possible to feel the origin of the natural elements.

Do you have a favourite of all the projects you have done?

I just completed to design a 165‘ Superyacht in “Maldivian Style” and I think is one of the most original project I ever did.

How can you characterize your style?

Timeless, elegant, sophisticated and unique, for the high customization that drives all my projects (either yachts or residential).

Who you would like to design something for?

If you mean for which shipyard, it would be LURSSEN in Bremen, if you mean the person for whom I would like to design is Keanu Reeves.

Are there any architects from the past that you appreciate a lot?

Frank Lloyd Wright, who believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment.

Are there any new exciting projects that you are currently working on that you would like to share with our readers?

I am now designing for two very important luxury brands, that come from the fashion world, a “Limited Edition” interiors for a European shipyard.

These important brands proposed me to create a concept that would allow to introduce themselves in the yacht industry.
