Breeder Perspectives on POLLED
This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to Austin McCulley for sharing your Polled story and views on the future of Polled Holsteins!

International POLLED
Gavana Holsteins - Gavin Moore - Australia Our farm (Glenmore – Gavana Holsteins) is located at Glenmore NSW 2570, approximately 70 km southwest of the CBD of Sydney. We are a family partnership, employing 2 full time workers. Along side our dairy, we run an Education and Tourism Facility catering for school excursions, and other tour groups. Milking on average 220 Holsteins. Polled Red Heifer by Piranha P We began using Polled genetics around 2008, when we were chasing increased fat and protein % in our milk we were supplying to our dairy company. We looked at Holstein, Normandy, Norwegian Reds, Jersey and Montbeliardes. Apart from increasing milk components, we were inspired by the reduced cost and effort of dehorning animals. Our philosophy to using Polled genetics in our herd has changed in the last five years with better improved sires coming on the market who meet our selection/breeding criteria. We aim to have a rolling herd average of around 9,500 liters per lactation, we breed animals with the emphasis on sound feet and legs (as our animals need to walk around 4km per day), high quality udders/attachments/ligaments, wide chests, open ribs, and average height. With special emphasis put on daughter fertility and longevity. We feel that Polled sires today provide a lot better options than what they did back in 2008. Gavana Luckystrike Jean #229 was our first Polled cow (genetically not bred from a Polled sire), but she was born Polled. At the time, we never thought too much about her being Polled, just thought that the genes had aligned and we got lucky. Today, as with our breeding philosophy, we use Polled sires to meet and improve the individual traits of cow families. If a Polled sire meets the criteria, and is in the tank, we will not hesitate to use him on the right cow. We are trying to breed from cow families who have animals classified 85 points or higher, Gavana Cadbury Reaction EX-90, Gavana Absolute Rose VG-87, Gavana Cadbury Jorja VG-87 and Gavana Samuelo Vinnie VG-89 to name a few, are cows we will be working with to breed Polled animals from. In our herd, we have Polled daughters of PG Superpoll, Mr PB Strategy PP, Buck H Creek MGL Piranha P, Pine Tree Gold PP and Coomboona Zipit Mirand PP. We are currently using Strategy PP, Piranha P, Gold PP, Mirand PP and Powerball P. As far as the availability of Polled, Polled sires are still around 5 to 10% of available sires in Australia. I see that with external pressures, Polled genetics will grow and dairy farmers will move towards 100% Polled in the next decade. The major reason will be the reduced effort, cost and public opinion to dehorning stock. I think that Polled sires are becoming more attractive with higher genomic proofs and more daughters hitting the ground. In the future, I would like to see sire breeders/AI looking to collect and supply Polled sires which improve the make up of my herd to improve the traits we breed for and traits which improve the Holstein breed (or any other breed). Greater emphasis placed on selection of Polled sires. I believe that Polled genetics will move towards 25 to 30% of sires available for farmers to select from within the next five years, which in our herd would allow for reduced risk of inbreeding and provide more options to strengthen the Polled genes in our herd. Within the next 10 to 15 years, I believe our herd will have around 60% of animals Polled. We certainly have around 5 to 8% of young heifers that are Polled. I am excited about what the future holds for Polled genetics and the cost savings which can occur in the future.

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. #PolledProgress Year in Review I wrote the same thing last year and in 2019, it still holds true! "As we deal with the stresses and challenges of today's dairy industry, it is a positive light to focus on the #PolledProgress that has been made this past year." In 2019, #PolledPlace celebrated its 5 year anniversary, had a successful tag sale with the Manannah-Valley Bouquet of Breeds and once again, shared the benefits of breeding Polled and your Polled genetics with visitors at World Dairy Expo. Polled animals placed very well at shows around the world including the Genetic Award Winner at the All American Jersey Show - Edan Denmark Blue Fox PP, Reserve Junior Champion of the Minnesota State Fair Milking Shorthorn Show - Corstar Mega Mozzarella P, Reserve Junior Champion at the Alberta Dairy Congress - Mosnang Ammo Whisky 7 P-Red, HM Intermediate Red & White Champion at International Dairy Week - Redholme Addiction Sally-P-Red, Junior Champion Jersey at International Dairy Week - Kings Ville Lassie 37 P, HM Junior Champion Red & White at Swiss Expo - Schrago Apoll Arctique P-Red and Junior Champion Jersey at Swiss Expo - Studerama Oliver P Olina P. 2019 also marked a record-setting sale record with the #2 Polled GJPI heifer in the breed (and #1 Polled non-JX GJPI heifer in the breed) - Wetumpka Viceroy Java-P selling for $103,000 at the 62nd National Jersey Heifer Sale! She was consigned by Cheryl Carlson of Wetumpka Farm and was purchased by Pine Tree Dairy. Let's not forget the success made in making #PolledProgress with classification results, genomic results and the increasing availability of Polled and Homozygous Polled bulls. Congratulations on all of these achievements! As Polled continues to gain momentum in many breeds, I'm excited to see what #PolledProgress will be made in 2020! THANK YOU #PolledPromoters! Thank you to the #PolledPromoters that promoted their genetics in the #PolledPlace and #PolledPromoters Directory publications this year! Special thank you to those that were contract advertisers in 2019 - Ardachie Jerseys, Covington Jerseys, Rollen N's Dairy, Schoene Kuh Dairy, Select Sires and Taughboyne Jerseys! Also, thanks to those that had business card ads in 2019 - Covington Jerseys, Hawksfield Farms, Manannah Valley, Oake Knoll Ayrshires, Schoene Kuh Dairy, Twisted Genes and Wetumpka Farm! Your support is greatly appreciated and your passion for promoting Polled certainly does not go unnoticed. Keep Breeding Polled!
