Bids can be placed online with COWBUYER or through one of our sale contacts listed to the right. This auction will utilize an auto-extend, soft closing. With this feature, bidding will close on ALL lots at the same time (Race Horse Style). Bidding will start to close from 6pm to 6:02 if either of those lots receive a bid after 6:01 they will extend bidding on that lot for an additional 2 minutes. Once 2 minutes have lapsed without any bidding activity, then ALL lots will close.

ZACH DAMROW

I grew up on a small family farm in rural Dodge County, Wisconsin. We primarily had Ayrshires and Milking Shorthorns, but there were a few times where Jerseys or Holsteins were in the herd. We rotational grazed during the summer months and fed a lactation grain mix to our cows during milking time and fed a lot of dry forage. In 2014, I moved to Idaho to work as the Calf Manager for Seagull Bay Dairy in American Falls. We raise calves for two dairy operations: the Andersen Dairy herd which consists of Seagull-Bay Registered Holsteins and Andersen Dairy ProCross Genetic herd located in Declo, Idaho and the Winstar Dairy herd located in Franklin, Idaho. We raise anywhere from 250-400 hutch calves, 200-400 heifers from weaning up through about 10 months, and then we had some beef on dairy feeder calves we raise as well. We act as the maternity site for both dairy herds and that allows us to focus on calf care and comfort. In 2016, I married my wife, Danielle, and we have 2 wonderful boys, Callen (5) and Dawson (2). I currently serve on the Ayrshire Breeders' Association Board of Directors and serve on a few committees on the national level. I’m on the Show Committee for the Western Spring National Holstein Show, serve as the sale chairman for the Western Spring Heritage Sale and Rally@Richmond Online Sale, and I have a junior advisor role with the Intermountain Holstein Association.

DEB HEUER My husband Steve and I were married in 1988 and that is when Desthaven Holsteins was born. The farm name came from the first two letters of both of our names. When we bought our farm in 1992, a decision was made that Steve could make more money working off the farm than I could, so I became the caretaker of our dairy herd of 35 cows. I have had a passion for dairy cattle for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite early memories was milking cows while my dad and brothers were doing fieldwork. My family had a tiestall barn back then, and I couldn't reach the pipeline so my mom had to hook up the milkline and pulsators for me. I was in 4th grade and knew this is what I wanted to do.

JILL NELSON I’m the fifth generation from my family to own Olmar Farms. We milk 130 Registered Holsteins and raise our heifers and breeding bulls. I run the dairy operation, while my husband, Brian runs over 670 acres of land, mixes feed and makes sure everything is in working order. We have two adult sons, Isaac and Josh, who are making us proud with their successes in their respective fields. After earning a degree in Animal and Plant Systems at the UMN-St Paul, I worked at ABS Global in international sales and promotion, based out of Madison, Wisconsin. To prepare for returning to the farm, I took a career in dairy nutrition and consulting in the Dane County, Wisconsin area. We returned home to Olmar Farms in 2002.

I have had the pleasure of judging countless shows in several states. I have also been able to share my love for the dairy cow by coaching so many great youth in 4-H and FFA dairy judging and knowledge bowl competitions. I am active in the Holstein Association on the state and national levels and several other dairy boards and committees. I am currently the President of Brown County Farm Bureau. I am also actively working to help farmers dealing with stray voltage as we had for many years. I do this by updating the strayvoltagefacts. com website I developed and talking with policy makers. In my spare time I like to be active in my church singing on their worship team.

MENA SCHMITT Like many of us lucky ones, I grew up on my family’s multigenerational farm located in the heart of Wisconsin's dairy country near Madison. My family cash crops 350 acres of corn and soybeans; along with, we have developed an elite herd of Milking Shorthorn cattle under the prefix of Maunesha Creek Farm. In addition, I am currently a Genetic Services Specialist at STgenetics in which my primary responsibility is the implementation and utilization of genomic testing.

KARLA SMIEJA I am a Retirement Planning Specialist at Bankers Life. I own and operate Starlight Acres with my children, Quentin & Cidavia Scott, and Jacob Schaefer. I grew up on a registered Ayrshire farm in Central Minnesota. I started showing when I was nine, and after 4-H and FFA, I've continued to show and have been blessed that both of my sons love showing as much as I do. Who would you consider your mentor(s) and why?

DAMROW: I've been fortunate to have many mentors in my time growing up, and even today I still have many people whom I ask for advice from. My first mentor growing up of course was my father Donald Damrow. We spent most of our time together talking about everything cows: feed, breeding decisions, fitting & showing, and animal health issues. Like most parents, there were also a lot of personal lessons about life: respect, keeping one's reputation in good standing, and making decisions and choices that YOU think is the right thing and not letting others deter you from that path. Some other mentors I've had through our amazing industry have been Allyn "Spud" Paulson, Russell "Butch" Ridge, Travis Smith, my sister Sarah Damrow, and currently my boss Greg Andersen. These individuals taught me everything from basic clipping skills, how to fill and bag animals at cow shows, to why certain bulls were used in matings for making the next generation of high valued calves.

HEUER: There have been many impactful people in my life. One person, in particular, may have had the greatest impact on my life, and I didn't even know who she was. In my 9th grade agriculture class, I saw my first copy of the Minnesota Holstein News. I paged through the magazine before class, but when I got to the back cover, it was one of the five defining moments in my life. On the back cover, was a full-page ad from Apple AcresHarriet Brown & family- with five beautiful black cows tied on a rail, with the apple orchard in full bloom behind them. The picture was beautiful and breathtaking, but what had my attention most was the fact that a woman and her family owned this farm back in the day when it was a man's world. I didn't learn, until many years later, that Harriet had suddenly lost her husband, but she kept the farm going and raised her young family. She made me believe that if she could keep her farm going, through all the obstacles in her life, maybe I could do it too! Other mentors for me have been my high school ag teacher Dan Martens, my high school volleyball coach Dennis Axel, Bob and Karyn Schauf at Indianhead Holsteins, and my parents who taught me to work hard at everything I do. My greatest teacher was my late husband Steve. He taught me so much about what a great Holstein cow is and how to take care of her and "listen" to her. She will tell you when she is happy or when she is sick, you just have to watch her and pay attention to the small details.

NELSON: There were so many important mentors in my life that helped develop my interest in great cows and helped shape my love and faith in Jesus Christ. I couldn't possibly name them all. But, growing up in the dairy industry at a time where very few women were given high regards among their peers as dairy breeders, I found two that really showed me that it was possible, Harriet Brown and Myrtle Himrum. I admired how Harriet held everything together after the untimely death of her husband. Despite that, she developed a great herd of cows, was active in the dairy industry in so many ways AND raised her kids to be exceptional in every way, many of whom I consider friends. I also marveled at how Myrtle showed bulls well into her later years of life. She clearly loved her animals and they loved hernever appearing to give her any trouble. Even the biggest of the show guys gave her great respect.

SCHMITT: Growing up with a strong-willed parent, my mother Cindy, has shown me to stand my ground, work harder than the person next to you and care deeply about everything you are involved in. Cindy and I are the main caretakers of the Maunesha Creek's herd; we work together to develop multiple World Dairy Expo champions and class winners along with generations of high scoring cattle. Our family has not always shown Milking Shorthorns, so my mentor and I have really put down the roots in the breed to create our own name. Cindy has always been the sounding board of our operation, and I can't thank her enough for coming along this journey by my side.

SMIEJA: I have been blessed with many mentors. When I went to my parents at nine years old and said I wanted to show, they said we don't know anything about showing, but we support you. The first years brought on 4-H leaders like the Barons' and Marcia Woeste (my extension agent who hauled me to more judging contests than I can count). As the years progressed, I met many people through dairy judging, two that stick out were Steve Peterson and Carl Kent. All have had unique knowledge that helped me improve. However, the one mentor that I still talk about (and thank) to this day is Mike Schiller. I met Mike while I was on the 4-H judging team, and honestly "Big Mike" scared me. His knowledge and success with Holsteins was something this

Ayrshire girl could only dream of. After some major family changes and multiple moves, I ended up back in central Minnesota, 10 years after high school, and one day I saw Mike. As we got to talking, he said something that had stuck with me for years. He said, "Karla, I remember you giving me a set of reasons when you were 12 or 13 years old, and I thought to myself that girl is going places." I'm not sure all these years later I can say I've "made it places," but I was blessed to be able to fulfill one of Mike's bucket list items by co-owning and exhibiting the Grand Champion at the Minnesota State Show with an animal Mike bred named Schill-view Gold GoldAnne-ET.

What would you consider to be your greatest accomplishment and would you say that your mentor helped you to achieve this?

DAMROW: My greatest accomplishment in the dairy industry to this point would be the TWO highlights of my junior show career with ONE of my Ayrshire cows I had purchased. My father was probably the mentor that helped me the most with being named Grand Champion of the Ayrshire Junior Show at World Dairy Expo in 2007 and then following that up the next summer with the Supreme Champion of the Junior Show at the Wisconsin State Fair in 2008 with Cedarvale Black China EX-92. China was purchased in 2003 using a youth loan through my local FSA office. Although reluctant, my dad agreed to sign some paperwork and did a milk check assignment where my pay was $113 a month. It was the only time I had ever gotten "paid" for doing work on my home farm growing up. I took a lot of pride in knowing that and made the most of that however I could. China was on the World Event Sale at the World Dairy Expo that day and I pretty much fell in love with her the moment I saw her. My dad thought she had a lot of potential and thought she would make a good brood cow going forward. That was the confidence I needed to make my decision in purchasing China. Fast forward to today- I have over 35 descendants of China to date and that number will continue to grow. China's legacy in my eyes coincides with my dad's legacy with the Ayrshire breed that he loved so much and the stories of the great Ayrshire herds of the 1970s and 80s for me will turn into the stories of China and her exploits for my sons Callen and Dawson.

HEUER: My greatest accomplishment is my two amazing children, Danielle and Patrick. Behind them, I have a farm with beautiful cattle and I'm doing what I have always dreamed of doing. Since we lost Steve, there have been difficult days, but in the end, I love what I am doing. It's very physically demanding, but I want to continue as long as my body allows. (I'm not as young as I think I am!) and I have always believed that what does not kill me makes me stronger.

NELSON: I have had the privilege to breed so

many great cows in my lifetime. The family I am most proud of are the Bella's which I have been developing for nearly 40 years. One line from this family produced 12 generations of EX cows and many other lines with 14 generations of EX and VG cows. As fun as that has been, probably my greatest accomplishment is surviving the devastating effects of stray voltage with the farm, marriage and family still holding strong. Anyone who has gone through a lengthy battle with this, knows how devastating it can be. As much as I would like to take credit for both of these, all credit goes to God who makes everything possible. Being able to witness the countless ways He interceded for us and brought just the right people and circumstances into our lives at just the right time has changed me forever.

SCHMITT: Breeding and developing last year's World Dairy Expo Reserve Junior Champion, Junior Show Junior Champion of the Milking Shorthorn show has surely been one of the accomplishments that takes the cake. I purchased the dam of this calf over 10 years ago alongside my mentor, Cindy, we believed she was the pick of the pen. Developing the dam into an EX-93-4E cow was nothing short of what we strived to do. Her last calf, a fancy red roan, ended up being the most special heifer we have bred to date. Doing this feat with my mentor has been extremely humbling and I can't imagine doing it without her. SMIEJA: Yes, some may say Anne was my biggest accomplishment, and obviously, Mike was a huge part of her winning. However, his most amazing feature (one that it took me years to catch on to) was when I would call looking for advice. He would listen to me talk and then he would say, "Well Karla, what do you think we should do?" I would lay out an idea and his reply was always, "That's exactly what I was thinking." In hindsight, it probably wasn't even close to what he was thinking, but his goal was to give me the confidence to stand behind my opinion and not let anyone rattle my cage. Case in point, after Anne won state show, we took her back to the pack and milked her out. We started to tear down to go home, and Anne laid down. It was probably 4:00 in the afternoon, and she'd been standing since 10:00 that morning. So even though we were all packed, except to load cattle, and everyone else had left, I stayed, Anne needed a nap, and I was going to give it to her. Buford was running the skid loader cleaning the barns, and he called Mike to ask when was "Karla going to get the cow up and leave?" His reply, "If Karla thinks the cow needs a nap, the cow needs a nap. Don't bug her, and she'll leave as soon as Anne is ready to leave." Which is exactly what we did. Mike didn't tell me this until months later, but he had instilled in me the confidence to know my cows and always do what was best for them. What is the best way to teach the next generation about the dairy industry?

DAMROW: There are a lot of options to teach the next generation about the dairy industry; people can use clinics to teach fitting and showing skills, online and social media to learn anything from hoof trimming to artificial insemination, to online workshops on genetic testing. All of these are such great ways to learn, but I don’t think

anything will beat hands-on, real-time learning with cattle at the farm, show, cattle operations we live on.

HEUER: I believe these last two questions go hand in hand. The best way anyone can teach is by example. Work hard, do your best, have courage and be kind. I love walking around the dairy barn after the show is over, talking to the kids. Congratulating the ones that won, but most of all, talking with the ones that didn't. Most are disappointed they didn't win that blue ribbon. My question to them, "Do you love her as much as you did before you walked into the ring?" They usually pause, and then smile and say "Yes!" I respond back, "THAT is the only thing that matters!" Educational opportunities are endless in the dairy industry. Like showing kids how to use a measuring stick, when they have never seen one or knew what it was used for.

NELSON: Who can avoid falling in love with a dairy cow if given a chance? Helping young people have a chance to interact with dairy animals will stay with them for the rest of their lives. That can be done by leasing animals for showing or hiring them to help on the farm. The more people that see how real farms work and how much we care about our animals and communities is so important. They will share what they know when given the chance.

SCHMITT: Get involved! Involved in any way you can find possible: 4-H, FFA, lease programs, working at a local dairy or breed junior association. These are all programs I was involved in and am grateful for all my experiences. For me, the best way to learn is by doing, seeing what others have achieved, and doing whatever I could do to recreate that. Additionally, I have a firm belief to keep youth involved and surround them with other young adults their age so they have friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

SMIEJA: I am very much a "try and see how it works out" type of person. I hope my mentees can appreciate and learn from that. I've been yelled at by many fitters (and a child or two) for my cows being so in tune with me that they won't fill if "mom's" around, so either "fill them yourself or walk away and let me do this." My nutritionists and veterinarian would agree - step 1 is know your cows and follow your gut. Don't be afraid to say "I don't know" and "someone may have more knowledge in this area than me," (i.e. one of my mentors). My biggest advice to someone looking to get started or move to the "next level"

is observe and ask questions. Keep in mind if someone is prepping an animal for the ring that's probably not the best time to ask questions, but stop by after the show, send them a message after they've went home (people who want to mentor you will respond), or stop and talk to the person feeding hay or picking poop. You'll be surprised what knowledge they can share. Two things will need to happen first, you remember that person's name and they remember yours. I've been exhibiting at World Dairy Expo for 30 years, and my goal every year is to meet at least 10 people that I remember their name and they remember mine. I still live by this goal every year, and some of them are now considered my closest friends. Second, just try new stuff. My mentors have given me a lot of ideas and "what works here." What I've learned is that many things may not work in your set up. I'll tell anyone that asks what my feed and show program is, and someone asked me afterwards, "Why would you give your secrets to your competitor?" My response was immediate; what works here won't work exactly the same there. You must adapt when you learn and what others teach you to work with your cattle in your environment. Every year I try at least one new thing (usually two), and some work the way my mentors said they would but some don't. Most times I learn, (with calls to my mentors many times) and the Starlight Acres girls come out better next year then they did this year. Don't be afraid to try!

Have you had the opportunity to mentor others? If so, how have you mentored them? If not, how would you mentor others?

DAMROW: I have had the opportunity to mentor several youth through our state Holstein Association youth events, judging at our local county fairs, and helping take kids to shows outside their immediate vicinity. I’ve helped organize a few youth field days since I’ve moved to Idaho where we focus on nutrition, fitting, showing, and quiz bowl/dairy jeopardy. A few times a year I have another group of kids who have shown the desire and willingness to do more than just their local fairs, so I put together trips to some other shows that have included the Colorado Dairy Youth Extravaganza, the Western Dairy Classic Junior Dairy Show in Tulare, CA, and to the World Dairy Expo.

NELSON: I have been privileged to mentor so many young people in various ways. I’ve coached dairy judging for 30 years and dairy bowl for 15, helping start two county teams. I love to watch them grow their skills and confidence. Anyone who has been under my watch has learned very quickly that we never say "can't." Instead, we say "I don't know how right now, but

I will soon." I love to watch when youth work hard to overcome their fears, whether it's their first time in the ring with an unruly calf or first set of reasons. From pushing them to do it with so many emotions in play, to seeing their face beam with pride when they accomplish the goal, there is no greater feeling. I have also mentored so many young people as their employer. I enjoy watching them develop their skills and hope that they will have learned how to be great employees when they enter the adult workforce.

SCHMITT: At Maunesha Creek farm, I am positive we have never had a 'big name' on the halter of our best animals. On those halters and winning those banners are the hardest working kids I know, all are part of a lease program through the American Milking Shorthorn Society (AMSS). AMSS offers a lease program to other junior members who are without their own Milking Shorthorn to show, so we utilize this to two local families we absolutely enjoy working with. It has been a thrill of a lifetime to see them top 35 head classes at World Dairy Expo, beating the best of the best. We give them a calf and see what they can accomplish; every spring the lease young adults pick out a calf or a yearling they would like to show. From there, we might take care of the feeding, but they do the rest: breaking to lead, show walking, going to shows, and they do this all along side of each other. They reap off the competitiveness of each other and have truly created memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. I am never afraid to show the good ones, but I won’t be showing her, the best young leadsmen/women I know will be.

SMIEJA: My logic for mentoring is, come along, watch, and learn. Basics like how to make a pack and feeding hay teach cow comfort and the cows knowing you're there for them. We've been blessed to have been able to mentor several youth over the years. Grace Jackson is the most recent. She comes to help train the heifers in the spring and help us at our shows, and in return, she's learned how to feed heifers and take care of them at her county fair/dairy days shows and qualify for state fair 4-H trips without any help from us. She watched, she learned, and now she can do it on her own.
