SOME EARLY POLLED JERSEY HISTORY

During the late 1920s, several Jersey breeders in Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama began working together to perpetuate the polled gene in their herds. This area became the “cradle” of polled Jerseys and spawned the extensive interest in polled Jerseys worldwide.

Willow Brook Farm Willow Brook Farm at Hendersonville, Tennessee owned by the John Carey Anderson and family began breeding purebred Jerseys in 1915.

They achieved great success and became one of the most influential herds in a wide area of the Southeastern US. In 1928 they purchased one polled registered Jersey heifer. From that single animal, they developed an outstanding polled Jersey herd and became an important source of the polled trait for the Jersey breed.

In 1948, Lucien R. Anderson, son of John C. Anderson was the Polled Jersey director on the board of the National Polled Cattle Promotion Club. and served as vice president. When Lucien Anderson returned home after the organization’s 1949 annual meeting in Fargo, North Dakota, he wrote the following to Walter Schultz of Nicollet, Minnesota, then president, “My prediction is that this Polled Cattle Club will do more good for the future of the cattle business--production, and marketing --all breeds, than anything that has happened before or will happen hereafter again soon.

It is a remarkable step forward and upward in the cattle business.”

Jack Crump Jack Mayo Crump (1903-1968) of Memphis, Tennessee purchased his first Jerseys about 1918. His many years of breeding polled Jerseys, his fervent belief in the value of polled Jerseys in modern dairy farming, and his untiring effort on their behalf have earned Mr. Crump the name “Mr. Polled Jersey.”

Arkansas Experiment Station The polled character for the Jersey herd was first introduced into the one­ sire herd at the Arkansas Experiment Station in 1938, with the purchase of a purebred polled Jersey female that was heterozygous for the polled gene.

From this foundation cow, Arkansas Champion Fairy, Pl 171430, came the polled cow, Arkansas Observer Lass, P1261315. Her sire was Wallflower Observer, P373554, who was a son of Afterglow’s Observer, famous herd sire at the Shelby County Penal Farm of Memphis, Tennessee.

“Lass” produced 9,846 lbs. milk and 487 lbs. fat in 305 days on twice daily milking while in the Experiment Station herd. Her type classification was Good Plus. “Lass” has probably contributed more to the development of polled Jerseys than any other female in the South, through the contribution of her two polled sons, UArk Standard Prince, P446226, and UArk Standard Majesty, P47L878.

UArk Standard Majesty was sold to Willow Brook Farms, Hendersonville, Tenn. Only five of his daughters were tested. One of them has a Silver Med-

al record of 9,251 lbs. milk and animals consigned to the first National Polled Jersey sale in October. 1955 at Willow Brook Farms, “Majesty” was the sire of 19; grandsire of 35; and great grandsire of seven. Thus, he appeared in the pedigrees of 61 of the 72 animals consigned to the sale.

Willow Brook Farms in cooperation with Robert M. Newman, Huntsville, Alabama; Fair Weather Farms, New Lebanon, New York; and T.D. Harness, Sulphur Springs, Texas, hosted the First National Polled Jersey Sale on October 21, 1955. The sale drew national attention with ten states represented at the ringside. Cattle were purchased by 27 different buyers from seven states; Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Fair Weather Farm Stanley & Jane Chittenden One of the largest buyers at the First National Polled Jersey Sale was Stanley Chittenden, Fair Weather Farms who purchased five head. Polled Dairylike Blossom was a mature cow and was the dam of Royal Polled Champion, the first polled bull used at Fair Weather Farms. Royal Polled Champion became the sire of Champion Superb who was the only bull of any breed to be named Premier Sire at Eastern States Exposition five times. Champion Superb was in service at Chittenden’s Dutch Hollow Farms until he was 13 years old.

Stanley Chittenden and his wife Jane became the principal operators of his family’s Fair Weather Farms soon after they were married in 1940. Stanley was always a very progressive farmer.

When the average dairy herd was 25 cows, he was milking 100. By 1962, there were 300 cows in milk at Fair Weather Farm and it was one of the largest dairy herds in the state of New York.

As the herd size increased, it was only natural that Stanley searched for technology that would increase efficiency. A milking parlor was installed. The milking herd was housed in tie stalls

and driven into a holding area before entering the milking parlor. At the time, cattle in the herd still had horns.

It soon became evident that horns and holding chutes were incompatible and the entire herd was dehorned using a Keystone dehorner to eliminate the risk of injury to the cows and their handlers.

Following that bloody ordeal, Stanley realized there had to be a better way to eliminate the horns than mechanical dehorners. He saw an advertisement placed by Jack Crump in the Jersey Journal offering 15 polled Jerseys for sale in Tennessee, so he and Dr J. J. Malnati (his herd veterinarian and also a Jersey breeder) travelled to Memphis and purchased all fifteen as the foundation for introducing the polled into the herd.

Stanley Chittenden bred the polled purchased cattle to the best horned bulls already in his herd, including bulls from High Lawn Farm. He bred his horned cows to polled bulls which had been included within Willow Brook purchase. The polled offspring from these matings gradually increased and by the 1960s, Fair Weather was primarily polled herd.

The earliest polled sires arising from this well-planned breeding program were Fair Weather Don Volunteer-P,

(sired by the horned bull and out of one of the polled Tennessee purchases) and Fair Weather Champion Superb-P, (sired by a polled bull arising the polled purchased animals and out of a highly productive brood cow already in the Fair Weather herd). Both bulls were born in 1952 and were key to the development of polled Jerseys, with Fair Weather Champion Superb-P emerging as the first polled Senior Superior Sire recognized by the AJCC. Dutch Hollow Farm Paul Chittenden Family In 1976, Paul Chittenden started Dutch Hollow Farm, allowing his two youngest brothers to take over Fair Weather Farm. Paul moved with 55 milking cows plus young stock, all of which were descendants of his 4-H cows. Shortly after that, he bought 20 more cows, and the dairy has continued to grow since then.

Today, almost every polled Jersey cow in the breed today is a descendant of either Stanley’s Fair Weather Farm breeding or Paul’s own Dutch Hollow Farm breeding. Dutch Hollow Oliver-P, bred by Paul Chittenden was sold to Select Sires and has become one of the most influential sires of the entire Jersey breed.

Normsland Belle Boy-P The history of polled Jerseys is incomplete without mention of Normsland Belle Boy-P. Normsland Belle Boy-P, bred by Norman Hamlin of Turner, Maine was born in 1960, and was at NYABC, Ithaca, NY. He was unrelated to Fair Weather Don Volunteer-P and Fair Weather Champion Superb-P. He was a well-respected A.I. sire in the late 1960s and early 1970s, acknowledged as such before even referring to his polled status. His polled genes come from his dam - in her extended pedigree the polled feature is identified as far back as ancestors born in1907.

Polled Testing

There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene.

H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present.

Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present.

At least 50% of the offspring will be polled.

Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled.

Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present.

At least 50% of the offspring will be polled.

Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled.

Pc/Pf POLLED. One copy of Polled-Celtic and 1 copy of Polled-Friesian molecular markers are present. All offspring will be polled.

Available from Triple-Hil Sires, this Zorro PP son makes him something a little different and the maternal side is time tested for both type and production. His closest dams are scored 94-91-9388 and then the 94pt Golden MBSB of Twin-Haven herself! All this plus he’s A2A2 as well will create some all around solid cows in your herd for years to come.

Valuable PP from International Protein Sires brings a variety of exciting things to the table. A +20 JUI and 2.80 SCS suggests beautiful silky udders to last for years with high milk quality. His 5.7 productive life and 1.0 DPR also point to long lived healthy cows and a unique 654 aAa to boot. Don’t hesitate to look twice at this Denmark P son!

CRV has a reputation of creating no nonsense cattle and their Polled Jersey sire Dilbert P is no exception. This Dutch-Hollow Dillan P son has a very balanced linear that would make very sensible commercial cattle with shallow and forest udders and good mobility.
