Breeder Perspectives on POLLED

This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to Martha Hoffman for sharing your Polled story and views on the future of Polled Milking Shorthorns and Dutch Belted!

In the Dutch Belted breed, our first Polled cow was Bestyet Esmerelda-P, from one of the best cow families of the breed. Her grandson is our first Polled and A2/A2 Dutch Belted bull, Bestyet Famous-P, who we collected last fall. What cow families are you breeding Polled into? We’re using Polled whenever we can, keeping in mind our other selection goals, so we are moving towards having Polled cattle in all the cow families. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? In our Milking Shorthorns, the foundation for many of our Polled animals is the Homozygous Polled bull Meadowbrook Chieftain 9th from a noted Polled breeder in the 1950s. Most of the Polled bulls that factor into our herd are homebred, like our Outlaw son Meriville Outstanding-P. We also have used our two Chieftain sons, Meriville Milk More-P (whose dam was a full sister to the great Meriville Peerless) and Meriville Matchmaker-P. We have used a few Polled outcross bulls like Rojahns Iris NKT Lancer N-ET-P, Adam-P and Ironman-P. The foundation Polled Dutch Belted bull we used was Galoffs Jumbo Eddie, followed by his son, Bestyet Fortified-P. What Polled bulls are you currently using? We’re really excited to be using Finnochio, an A2/A2, Heterozygous Polled bull from the Cantagree grazing dairy in Utah. He’s a native Milking Shorthorn linebred for milk production and good udders, making him a promising sire to use as an outcross in our herd. Family Dairy LLC in Wisconsin hosted the Shawano County Brunch on the Farm in June. Over 4,400 people were served brunch and countless others came to check out the farm. Matt Goers shared, "Our entire family enjoyed welcoming all the guests for a very special day and also celebrating 150 years of farming the same land. Another fun highlight for me was meeting fellow Polled breeders I’ve never met before that I met through social media. Dan Hinz, Erica Lundberg and Paul Giese all came from different parts of the state to see the farm and of course talk about Polled genetics!" Aerial photo by Distinct Aerial Shots

A Focus on International POLLED

The Marketplace for POLLED

Mosnang Holsteins - Markus Hehli - Canada Farm Background My parents moved to the farm in Alberta in 1980 from Switzerland and started with a 40 cow tie stall. We now milk closer to 100 cows with a free stall and a flat parlour (or step up/walk through). We also farm about 400 acres of land with alfalfa, barley, and a little corn for our own forage. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? I started with Polled over 10 years ago with Lawn Boy P. I like the ease of Mosnang Ammo Whisky 7 P-Red Polled cattle and find it to be another Res. Jr. Champion Alberta Dairy Congress Photo © Cowsmo niche to add to my breeding program. Over the last few years, I've been using quite a few more as the Polled bull selection has increased. I'm not willing to give up quality and it needs to be a bull that I would use even if he wasn't Polled. I breed for high type animals that are built to produce a lot of milk (and fat) for a long time. Who was your first Polled cow? My first notable Polled was Mosnang Laron Bianca VG. And she produced a Homozygous Polled Ocean Bay that was also VG. What cow families are you breeding Polled into? What Polled bulls are represented in your herd and what Polled bulls are you currently using? I breed any animal that fits the bull to Polled. Many of my top show cows are being bred to Polled bulls. I have a number of Ammo P heifers that I really look forward to calving in later this year. I used a lot of Ammo P and then now more recently I've been getting a number of Macnut PP calves and have been using Mirand PP very heavily with the first ones to be born this summer. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? I think the future for Polled is getting quite exciting because we are past the "pioneer stage" and have top quality bulls available so we don't have to sacrifice quality just to get Polled. What would you like to see available in the future? Where do you see the future of Polled in your breed? I think we will see a lot of Polled come up quickly now as we have more and more homozygous bulls to pick from. Visit www.mosnang.com for more!

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. World Dairy Expo - Tools for Dairy's Progress Hard to believe it, but now that summer is here, it will be over before we know it, and it will be my favorite time of year - - WORLD DAIRY EXPO! This year, #PolledPlace is celebrating five years and also our fifth World Dairy Expo. It is truly a highlight of my year to have so many of you stop by the #PolledPlace booth and share your Polled success stories with me. It is also an honor to share your genetics with attendees at World Dairy Expo through the #PolledPlace and #PolledPromoters Directory. Think about how many "tools" are required to dehorn the animals in your herd, not to mention how much time it takes? As one of the original #PolledPioneers, Walter Schultz, used to say, "Why not dehorn with genetics? It's much easier!" Polled Pioneers NOW AVAILABLE! After countless hours of compiling Polled pedigrees, talking with Polled breeders of the past, present and future, and collecting several Polled photos, the FIRST EVER Polled Dairy Cattle history book is now available! Polled Pioneers: History of Naturally Hornless Dairy Cattle in North America by Ronald F. Eusice is a full color book that showcases Polled in all major dairy breeds. This book is 370 pages and includes 750 photos and pedigree charts. Congratulations to Ron on the completion of this tremendous All-Breeds Polled History project!
