Baking & Pastry Arts (225 Hours) The Baking and Pastry Arts program at Polaris Career Center will provide a solid foundation in the preparation of basic skills needed for this popular industry. You will obtain the practical and theoretical hands-on training necessary to prepare quality bakery products. Topics include: • Preparation of various cookies, custards, mousses, meringues, quick breads, cakes, cupcakes, tortes, frostings, fillings, pies, tarts, yeast breads, pre-fermented breads, laminated doughs, chocolates, ice creams, sorbets, including commercial food equipment operation.

• How to use the necessary tools to prepare and present products.

• Introduction to ingredients, mixing methods and garnishes; proper handling and storage of foods.

• Basic pastry and culinary techniques (piping, knife skills, etc.).

• Sanitation and safety through ServSafe certification, entrepreneurship and customer service.

This program is for beginners who have a true passion for baking and learning and is appropriate for those interested in starting a home-based business. Our students gain skills, knowledge and confidence.

March 21, 2011 – August 29, 2011 (approximate ending date) Monday & Wednesday, 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM Tuition Fee: $2,795 Tuition includes textbooks, supplies and ServSafe certification examination fees.

Cardiographic Technician (230 Hours) The Cardiographic Technician program at Polaris Career Center is designed to prepare students to perform non-invasive cardiac testing procedures such as electrocardiograms, Holter and telemetry monitoring, and stress testing.

Cardiographic technicians work in hospitals and cardiology offices to assist physicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of heart disease. Students will receive 130 hours of classroom and lab time. In addition, students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 100-hour unpaid externship in a local clinical setting. Note: Externship hours must be completed during daytime working hours, Monday through Friday. Some healthcare systems, physician practices, and/or pharmacies may require immunizations for Polaris Career Center students participating in externships.

Upon completion, students will be eligible for credentialing as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) with Cardiovascular Credentialing International.

Prerequisite: Medical Terminology course. Proof of course completion (transcript or certificate of completion) is required. It is recommended that Medical Terminology and the Cardiographic Technician program not be taken concurrently.

EMT-Basic (130 Hours) Polaris Career Center has partnered with Cleveland Clinic Health System EMS Academy to provide the EMT Basic Program under Ohio Accreditation #389. The program will be provided at both campuses of the EMS Academy. West Campus: 15531 Lorain Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 44111 East Campus: 18901 Lakeshore Blvd. #306 Cleveland, Ohio 44119. This 130hour curriculum is designed to provide you with a basic understanding of prehospital medicine. The course reviews anatomy and physiology as well as basic level skills and procedures designed to stabilize critically ill or injured patients. The ideal candidate for this program is any individual wishing to begin a career or volunteer with an EMS or fire service. This course is a required prerequisite to the Intermediate EMT or Paramedic program.

Registration Process: Registration is done through the EMS Academy. To begin the enrollment process into the EMS Academy, print off an application from www.emsacademy.us and submit the application to the EMS Academy with your $50 non-refundable application fee to be considered for the program. Candidates must complete and pass the TABE test of adult learner standards which will be scheduled at registration.

Job Training Programs Graphic Design Certification (200 Hours) A ten-part course designed to prepare students to learn the latest programs and techniques in the graphic design/production field. Topics include: The basics of design, typography, color theory and basic layout; then application in the computer disciplines: Adobe InDesign CS5 (page layout); Photoshop CS5 (photo correction, retouching, etc.) and Illustrator CS5 (creating and modifying vector images). Advanced classes in electronic page layout and print production will round out preparation for jobs in the field. At the conclusion of the program, students will study and design business cards and resumes, and a portion of the class will address job searches, networking, and interviewing techniques. Portfolio preparation and presentation will also be covered. An Introduction to the MacIntosh class will be included for those unfamiliar with the MacIntosh OS X computer system. Prerequisite: General computer knowledge; keyboarding skills helpful. This class will include preparation for Adobe Certification in InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator. The tuition fee includes one Adobe exam voucher, which covers one software application. The exam is taken offsite and at a different time. The student will be able to choose which software application he/she wants to take and schedule accordingly.

March 22, 2011 – August 20, 2011 Graphic Design Certification (approximate ending date) Information Night Tuesday & Thursday - 6:00 PM 9:00 PM and Tuesday, February 22, 2011 Saturday - 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM – Room 321 Tuition Fee: $2,495 Tuition includes textbooks and one Adobe certification exam fee.

Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC/R)* (600 Hours) The highly trained technicians in the Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) profession maintain the complex HVAC/R systems used in residential, light industrial and commercial buildings. Trained technicians have job stability and high earning potential. The HVAC/R program at Polaris Career Center will help you access this growing field.

The course includes: Introduction to Construction and Maintenance (core curriculum); HVAC/R safety related issues; heating, ventilating, air conditioning & refrigeration (HVAC/R); heating & air conditioning installation procedures; understanding schematics; airside systems; proper venting; CFC refrigerant recovery/recycling certification; ICE certification; duct work; electrical code & electrical controls; mechanical maintenance; air properties and balancing; heating and air conditioning diagnostic techniques; refrigeration troubleshooting, and customer service. All instructional materials, as well as the CFC refrigerant recovery/recycling certification and ICE test fees, are included. All students are given the opportunity to earn National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) certification in core curriculum.

February 7, 2011 – June 20, 2011 (approximate ending date) Monday – Thursday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM Tuition Fee: $5,995 Tuition includes textbook and certification examination fees. *Pell Grant and/or Direct Loan eligible program.

Medical Assisting* (946 Hours) Learn the skills you need to prepare for employment in a physician’s office, clinic, or hospital. The course will cover, but is not limited to, the following: Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; entry-level clinical skills; phlebotomy certification; scheduling appointments; records management/ electronic medical records; medical law and ethics; entry-level ICD-9/CPT coding; health insurance claim forms; AED/adult/child/infant CPR; first aid/ medical emergencies; computer skills; psychology of human behavior; employability skills; OSHA/universal precautions; and HIPAA/standards and guidelines. Medical Assisting students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 160-200 hour nonpaid externship. Externships are available during daytime business hours only. Students will be required to have a routine physical, and a criminal background check. Some healthcare systems, physician practices, and/or pharmacies may require immunizations for Polaris Career Center students participating in externships.

Students will be required to purchase their own uniforms (to be discussed during orientation the first week of class).

The Polaris Career Center Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www. caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (CRB-AAMAE).

Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification examination and the International Academy of Phlebotomy Science (IAPS) certification examination.

Advanced placement will only be allowed as transfer credit from an accredited institution and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This must be arranged prior to enrollment. Credit will not be granted for experiential learning.

Medical Billing & Coding* (900 Hours) This 900-hour program is designed for those who wish to gain employment in medical billing and health information management in physician practices, outpatient clinics, billing companies as well as a variety of other medical facilities. Students will develop a thorough knowledge of medical terminology, electronic medical records, practice management software, Microsoft Office 2007, medical office administration procedures, medical procedural coding, medical diagnostic coding, and reimbursement procedures. Students will be required to complete a 180-hour externship during daytime working hours at the end of the program. Students will be eligible to participate in the National Healthcare Association Certified Medical Billing and Coding Specialist exam (CBCS) and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exams.

Students will be required to have a criminal background check. Some healthcare systems, physician practices, and/or pharmacies may require immunizations for Polaris Career Center students participating in externships.

Job Training Programs Nursing Assistant (STNA) (90 Hours) State Tested Nursing Assistants gain employment caring for diverse patient populations including the elderly in long-term care settings, assisted living facilities, home care environments and hospitals. Our program is State-approved and consists of mandatory attendance for classroom/clinical hours. The STNA exam is included in the fee and is offered to our students after successful completion of the program. Medicare approved Home Health Aide Certification and Basic Life Support CPR is also included. The 2-step Mantoux TB test is required before class begins.

Precision/CNC Machine Technology* (600 Hours) Be prepared to enter the high-tech field of precision machining. Journeyman machinists, die makers, mold makers and CNC programmers/operators enjoy stable employment in the dynamic environment of manufacturing. All participants will be given the opportunity to earn Level 1 credentials from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, Inc. (NIMS). This hands-on curriculum includes applied mathematics, blueprint interpretation, geometric dimensioning & tolerancing; project work on lathes, mills, surface grinders; CNC/CAD/CAM fundamentals; manufacturing safety and job planning; hand tools and drilling machines; inspection instruments and quality control; metallurgy and heat treating; web-based instruction in partnership with Tooling U. This coursework has been approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship Training for existing companysponsored apprenticeship programs.

January 31, 2011 – October 25, 2011 (approximate ending date) Monday – Thursday, 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM Tuition Fee: $6,495 Tuition includes textbooks, Tooling U and certification examination fees. *Pell Grant and/or Direct Loan eligible program.

The following Job Training Programs will begin Fall Semester 2011:

Phlebotomy Certification (300 Hours) Students will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: Vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, and butterfly needles on adults. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, test requirements, proper labeling of specimens and quality assurance. Students will be taught specimen handling and processing.

Both classroom instruction and clinical experience during a 100-hour rotation at a healthcare facility will provide an opportunity for the student to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam through the National Healthcareer Association (exam fee included). Note: Clinical hours may be scheduled during the day. Students will be required to purchase their own uniforms. Students will be required to have a criminal background check.

Motorcycle Safety/Adult Basic and Literacy Education MOTORCYCLE SAFETY Polaris Career Center offers Motorcycle Safety Courses for Novice through Experienced Riders.

Basic RiderCourse, Basic RiderCourse-2, and Experienced RiderCourse ALL REGISTRATIONS FOR BRC, ERC AND BRC2 ARE ONLINE REGISTRATIONS ONLY http://motorcycle.ohio.gov Basic RiderCourse – BRC (16 hrs.)

This class is your first step in learning to ride a motorcycle. It is intended for the true beginner who has never ridden a motorcycle and for the experienced rider looking to refine their skills and obtain a motorcycle endorsement. If successful, you will receive a completion card which you will take to the driver’s license bureau and after paying the necessary fee a motorcycle endorsement will be added to your driver’s license. You do not have to take another riding test at the driver’s license bureau. Classes consist of 4 hours of classroom training, followed by 12 hours of actual riding on a controlled course. Courses are offered on a variety of days and times so make sure you know your class dates and times when registering. For the first class, bring your driver’s license, along with either your motorcycle endorsement, or a valid temporary riding permit or you will not be admitted into the class and your tuition will not be refunded.

Also, bring a pencil and ink pen and dress casually. Proper riding attire will be discussed the first night of class. NOTE: All classes start promptly!

Experienced Rider Course – ERC (5 hrs.)

This course is designed for experienced riders who want to improve both their mental and physical riding skills to lower their risks while riding. The course consists of training and practice on your motorcycle on a controlled course under the knowledgeable and helpful eyes of trained instructors.

If you ride two-up, your passenger may also enroll in this course. You must bring: proof of current insurance, your street legal motorcycle in good operating condition with proof of ownership and both rider and passenger must wear full protective clothing as defined below. Basic RiderCourse – BRC-2 (9 hrs.) NEW The Basic RiderCourse 2(BRC-2) is a new 9-hour course designed for riders over 18 years of age who have been riding with a temporary permit for longer than a year (over a thousand miles experience) and for experienced riders returning to riding with or without a motorcycle endorsement after several years of not riding. Cancelled Courses The Adult Education Department must cancel courses that do not attain the required minimum enrollment.

The Adult Education Department reserves the right to cancel, discontinue, postpone or combine courses before or at the first class meeting. Attempts are made to contact all students whose courses have been cancelled. In the event a class is cancelled, a full refund of the registration fee will be given.

Berea and Strongsville Community Education School Closing When the Berea and Strongsville City School District’s classes are cancelled or dismissed due to inclement weather, evening classes will not be held, regardless of weather changes. Classes missed will be added at the end of the session.

Withdrawals and Refunds • Full refunds will be issued when a class is cancelled by the Adult Education Department, or fees may be applied to another class.

• No refunds will be issued after the first class meeting. There will be no refunds for one-night classes. The Motorcycle Basic Rider Course and Experienced Rider Course tuition fee is non-refundable.

• A $10 cancellation fee will be withheld from all refunds except for Job Training Programs which have a $100 cancellation fee.

• Books and supplies are non-refundable.

FREE Parking Polaris offers an open parking policy after 4PM, in which Visitors/Students/ Staff can park in any of the available parking areas in the front, back or side lots. During the daytime, however, students should park in the right side lot that is adjacent to Old Oak Blvd.
