Baking & Pastry Arts (225 Hours) There is nothing sweeter than a career in baking and pastry arts. The Baking and Pastry Arts program at Polaris Career Center will provide a solid foundation in the preparation of basic skills needed for this growing industry.

You will obtain the practical and theoretical hands-on training necessary to prepare quality bakery products.

• Sanitation and safety through ServSafe certification • Entrepreneurship •Customer Service This program is for beginners who have a true passion for baking and learning and is appropriate for those interested in starting a home-based business. Our students gain skills, knowledge and confidence.

Certified Cardiographic Technician (230 Hours) The Certified Cardiographic Technician program at Polaris Career Center is designed to prepare students to perform non-invasive cardiac testing procedures such as electrocardiograms, Holter and telemetry monitoring, and stress testing.

Cardiographic technicians work in hospitals and cardiology offices to assist physicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of heart disease. Students will receive 130 hours of classroom and lab time. In addition, students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 100-hour unpaid externship in a local clinical setting. Note: Externship hours must be completed during daytime working hours, Monday through Friday. Healthcare providers require immunizations for students participating in externships. Students will be required to have a background check. Upon completion, students will be eligible for credentialing as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) with Cardiovascular Credentialing International. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology course. Proof of successful course completion (transcript or certificate of completion) is required. It is recommended that Medical Terminology and the Cardiographic Technician program not be taken concurrently.

Job Training Programs Cosmetology Academy* (1,500 Hours) FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBLE PROGRAM Let the Polaris Career Center Cosmetology Academy prepare you for a challenging career in this exciting, cutting-edge field.

Gain hands-on experience in the Polaris Career Center New Beginnings Salon while obtaining the industry knowledge necessary for your Cosmetology license.

Acquire skills commonly used in cosmetology in the following areas: Dispensary operations, sanitation, reception duties and salon management. Emphasis will be placed on the hands-on practice of: Scalp care and hair treatments, shaping and cutting hair, styling hair, permanent waving, hair relaxing and coloring, hair highlighting and toning, manicuring and pedicuring, facial treatments and wig and hairpiece care. Career Options (State license required): Cosmetologist, color technician, perm specialist, hair cutting specialist, esthetician, nail technician, salon owner/manager, platform artist, equipment sales.

Dental Assisting – Accredited* (900 Hours) FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBLE PROGRAM A career as a dental assistant offers many opportunities and the field is growing faster than average occupations according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. As valuable members of the dental care team, assistants greatly increase the efficiency of the dentist in the delivery of quality oral health care. In this course you’ll learn all the skills you need for entry-level employment.

This program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the National Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination.

Skills taught include introduction to dentistry, oral health and nutrition, infection control, head and neck anatomy/physiology, patient care, dental charting, psychology, restorative materials, advanced chairside, laboratory materials, radiology, practice management, computer technology, and dental specialties. Dental Assisting students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 310-hour, unpaid externship (additional days may be required for the externship). Students will be required to have a routine physical, a criminal background check, and purchase their own uniforms.

Immunizations will be required prior to participation in the clinical portion of the program.

Polaris Dental Assisting Program Opens the Door to Case Western Reserve University Polaris Career Center has an agreement with the Expanded Function Dental Assisting (EFDA) Program at Case Western Reserve University. Students who successfully complete the Polaris Career Center Adult Dental Assisting Program and obtain their national Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential will have the minimum two-year experience as a dental assistant in general dentistry requirement waived, allowing them to apply to the EFDA Program immediately.

Early Child Care Education/Child Development Associate* (930 Hours) FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBLE PROGRAM (PENDING) The Early Child Care Education/Child Development Associate (CDA) is the most widely recognized credential in early child care education (ECE) and is a key stepping stone on the path of career advancement in ECE. At Polaris Career Center, the CDA program is designed to prepare students to successfully complete the requirements for the nationally recognized CDA credential. The CDA credential is based on a core set of competency standards, which guide early care professionals as they work toward becoming qualified Schedule/Tuition: teachers of young children. Job Training Programs Graphic & Web Design Certification (600 Hours) FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBLE PROGRAM (PENDING)

This 600-hour program is designed to prepare you for employment and/or freelance work in the graphic design and web design fields. Topics include the basics of design, Schedule/Tuition typography, color theory and basic layout; then, application in the computer software Fall 2011 programs: Adobe InDesign CS5 (page layout); Photoshop CS5 (photo correction, September 12, 2011 – July 14, 2012 (approximate ending date) retouching, etc.) and Illustrator CS5 (creating and modifying vector images). Advanced Monday – Friday, 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM classes in electronic page layout and print production will be included. Learn web Saturday, 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM design through courses in HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, Content Management Tuition fee ............. $5,495 Systems, Social Media Networks, Flash animation and more, then application with Tuition includes textbooks and Adobe certification exam fee.

Adobe Flash CS5 and Dreamweaver CS5. An introduction to the MacIntosh class *Financial aid eligible program (PENDING) will be included for those unfamiliar with the MacIntosh OS X operating system.

Prerequisite: General computer knowledge; keyboarding skills helpful. Adobe offers certification for the above-mentioned Adobe programs. One exam fee is included in the tuition. The exam is taken offsite and on a scheduled date. You will be able to choose which exam you want to take.

Qualifies for CT2 Career Technical College Credit

There is no better time than the present to enter the healthcare field. The Medical Assisting program is a great way to gain access to this exciting profession.

The curriculum prepares you to perform administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures for employment in a physician’s office, clinic, or hospital.

The course will cover, but is not limited to, the following: Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; entry-level clinical skills; phlebotomy certification; scheduling appointments; records management/electronic medical records; medical law and ethics; entry-level ICD-9/CPT coding; health insurance claim *Financial aid eligible program forms; AED/adult/child/infant CPR; first aid/medical emergencies; computer skills; psychology of human behavior; employability skills; OSHA/universal precautions; and HIPAA/standards and guidelines.

Medical Assisting students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a 160-200 hour nonpaid externship.

Students will be required to have a routine physical, and a criminal background check. Some healthcare systems and physician practices may require proof of current immunizations for students participating in externships. Students must also complete the Hepatitis B series prior to participation in their externships.

This 900-hour program is designed for those who wish to gain employment in medical billing and health information management in physician practices, outpatient clinics, billing companies as well as a variety of other medical facilities.

Students will develop a thorough knowledge of medical terminology, electronic medical records, practice management software, Microsoft Office, medical office administration procedures, medical *Financial aid eligible program procedural coding, medical diagnostic coding, and reimbursement procedures. Graduates will be well prepared for entry-level positions as medical office managers, medical records technicians, or billing and coding specialists.

Students will be required to complete a 180-hour externship during daytime working hours at the end of the program.

Natural Resources/Ranger/Basic Peace Officer Academy* (600 Hours) FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBLE PROGRAM The Polaris Career Center Natural Resources/Ranger/Basic Peace Officer Academy prepares candidates for police and natural resource law enforcement officer positions and other careers that require peace officer training. This 600hour course is conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. The instruction will be provided by those who have experience and expertise in the field of law enforcement, natural resources, and parks and recreation.

College Credit Students can earn technical credits toward an Associate of Technical Studies Degree in Park Ranger Policing at Cuyahoga Community College. In addition, credits may be obtained through Ashland University and Chancellor University toward a baccalaureate degree in Criminal Justice; and through Hocking College towards an associate degree in applied science in police science.

The Academy Training includes administration, legal, human resources, firearms, driving, subject control, first aid, patrol, civil disorders, investigation, physical conditioning, aerosol defense spray, and expandable baton. As an all-inclusive Academy, the following are provided for use during the program: Gun belt, holster, handgun, shotgun, ammunition, handcuffs, duty bag, gym uniforms, polo shirt, textbook, expandable baton, aerosol defense spray, winter jacket, baseball cap, and winter hat. Become a trained technician in the welding, fabricating and metallurgical trades and gain access to a growing and demanding field. This program takes place in a comprehensive classroom and state-of-the art welding lab. It is designed to teach you practical applications and theory related to the welding trade, while preparing you for the American Welding Society (AWS) certifications and exams. The National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) credentials may also be achieved.

Pell Grant Information

• The maximum award for 2011-2012 is $5,550 for a 900-clock hour program and $3,700 for a 600-clock hour program.

• Award amounts are based on the student’s EFC (Expected Family Contribution) calculated from the previous year’s income information submitted on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

• Pell Grant awards are applied to the student’s tuition account when enrolling in a full-time job training program meeting 600 or 900 clock hours.

• Students are required to self-pay the balance of the tuition not covered by the Pell Grant or other type of financial aid.

• All Pell Grant funds are applied directly to tuition. The Pell Grant does not have to be repaid.

• To remain eligible for Pell Grant funds, a full-time student must maintain satisfactory academic progress (C average) in addition to a minimum of 90% attendance.

Students not in compliance will be responsible for paying the portion of financial aid expected to be received.

Instructions for Applying for William D. Ford Federal Student Loans

1. Complete the 2011-2012 FAFSA. 2. Visit www.studentloans.gov.

3. Sign in with your FAFSA PIN. 4. Carefully read the information provided regarding the loan process, subsidized and unsubsidized loans, processing fees, interest rates, and repayment.

5. Complete “Entrance Counseling.”

6. Complete and submit the “Master Promissory Note” (MPN).

7. Contact Pat Carter (440-891-7668), Financial Aid Coordinator, 3-5 days after the MPN has been submitted, to confirm loan approval and to certify the amount you want to borrow.

8. Complete “Exit Counseling” before the last loan disbursement.

9. Loan funds will be first applied toward outstanding tuition costs for the current disbursement period. Any balance of funds will be refunded to the student. Students will be notified when refund checks are available.

The Pell Grant and William D. Ford Federal Student Loans are each disbursed in two separate payments. One half of each award will be disbursed in the Fall and one half will be disbursed in the Spring, depending on the class start date. Polaris Career Center adheres to the policies and procedures established by the U.S. Department of Education, the Auditor of the State of Ohio, and the Treasurer’s Office for all disbursements. This course is designed for Maintenance personnel of sophisticated electrical control systems. It brings together the required knowledge needed by electrical personnel involved with restoring service to faulted electrical drives. The course starts with a review of required mathematics from basic to vector analysis. Next electrical laws will be discussed, series and parallel circuits, AC and DC, transformers, solid-state circuit components, i.e., the diode, the Zener diode, the SCR, rectification, controlled rectification, the transistor, the DC motor, four-quadrant control of the DC motor and components required by a closed loop position regulator. Additional topics include AC Motors and associated starting equipment, starting off with the speed equation of the AC motor, VVVF for speed control, WRIM, and the starting and running of the Synchronous motor. For the control side, switching and logic circuit is brought to life involving “reasoning” using AND, OR, NOT, EXOR, NOR and NAND gates; with Boolian equations, truth tables and circuit configurations.

Switching algebra is included, with logic addition and multiplication. Palette Knife Painting (8 hrs.)

The art of palette knife painting is simply creating an oil or acrylic painting using a palette knife in place of a brush. The palette knife is an instrument used to mix the paint on the painter’s palette when squeezed on the palette from the tube. The result is an impressionistic style painting with a thick application of paint similar to stucco. One can carve into the paint while it is still soft revealing color underneath. Artistic talent is not all that important in this style of painting. It’s more painting a picture like frosting a cake. It’s fun!

This class is an introduction to plein aire landscape painting using the versatile medium of acrylics. We will create one painting together, and then you can bring in a picture or photo of your choosing to paint additional paintings while building your skills with more advanced techniques. This course covers all the FAA-mandated subject material for the Private Pilot Knowledge exam, and includes: Aerodynamics and Control, Engines and Structures, Instrumentation, Weather Theory and Interpretation, FAA Regulations, Air Traffic Control Procedures, Flight Fitness and Medical Considerations, Safety, Decision-Making, Judgment and Common Errors, Radio Communications, Navigation Fundamentals plus Radio and GPS Navigation, Airspace and Security, and Flight Planning and Chart Interpretation. Ghost Hunt At Canal Fulton Haunted Warehouse (4.5 hrs.)

Ghost Hunt at the Mansfield Reformatory (6.5 hours) Here is your chance to do your own investigation of one of the most haunted buildings in America. The Ohio State Reformatory (OSR) in Mansfield is claimed to be one of the top haunts in America. It has been featured on TV’s Travel Channel in “101 Things To Do Before You Die” on the Travel Channel.

This is truly an opportunity not to be missed! Joining us on this ghost hunt will be an expert on the facility, and an experienced ghost hunter. He will give us a personal tour of the prison, pointing out details, and sharing his personal stories about the facility. After our tour, we will then start our own investigations. You are encouraged to bring any “tools of the trade” that you wish to work with: camera (digital or disposable), video camera, tape recorder (with extra tape and batteries), flashlight (with fresh batteries). We will see if we can photograph anything unusual (things not seen by the naked eye - for example: mists, streaks of light, orbs, faces, or body images). We can see if we can tape record sounds, voices, words that cannot be heard by the human ear. This building contains steep steps and uneven surfaces. Proper footwear is necessary for your safety. Motorcycle Safety MOTORCYCLE SAFETY Polaris offers Motorcycle Safety Courses for Novice through Experienced Riders.

This class is your first step in learning to ride a motorcycle. It is intended for the true beginner who has never ridden a motorcycle and for the experienced rider looking to refine their skills and obtain a motorcycle endorsement. If successful, you will receive a completion card which you will take to the driver’s license bureau and after paying the necessary fee a motorcycle endorsement will be added to your driver’s license. You do not have to take another riding test at the driver’s license bureau.

Classes consist of 4 hours of classroom training, followed by 12 hours of actual riding on a controlled course. Courses are offered on a variety of days and times so make sure you know your class dates and times when registering.

For the first class, bring your driver’s license, along with either your motorcycle endorsement, or a valid temporary riding permit or you will not be admitted into the class and your tuition will not be refunded. The Basic Rider Course for Returning Riders (BRC-RR) is a new 9-hour course designed for riders over 18 years of age who have been riding with a temporary permit for longer than a year (over a thousand miles experience) and for experienced riders returning to riding with or without a motorcycle endorsement after several years of not riding. Motorcycles are provided for your use during the course and if successful you will receive a completion card which you will take to the driver’s license bureau to receive your endorsement on your license. You do not have to take another riding test at the driver’s license bureau.

You will be required to demonstrate sufficient riding skills in two basic control skill exercises to continue participation in the BRC-RR. Students unable to demonstrate sufficient skills will be counseled out of this course and advised to register in the Basic Rider Course. Your tuition will not be refunded.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Scooter School is a beginner’s course designed to help individuals develop their riding skills and learn street-riding strategies in a controlled environment. The only prerequisites for this course are that you have experience riding a bicycle and are old enough to legally operate a scooter on the street. Specific courses or activities may require registrants to sign a separate waiver of liability and release. Students enrolled in courses offered through the Adult Education Department are subject to Polaris Career Center regulations and policies including those pertaining to student conduct and discipline.

Senior Citizens Discount Senior citizens will receive a 10 percent discount on the published tuition fee (discount does not apply to material fees) except where indicated. Note: Senior Citizens include persons over the age of 65 who can produce proof of age and identity.

School Closing Closing of the daytime classes at Polaris Career Center DOES NOT necessarily mean that the evening classes will be cancelled. The decision to cancel evening classes will be made by Adult Education administration by 3:00 PM. Students should listen to the radio or TV or call the school at 440-891-7600 for further information.

Berea and Strongsville School Closing When the Berea and Strongsville City School District’s classes are cancelled or dismissed due to inclement weather, evening classes will not be held, regardless of weather changes. Classes missed will be added at the end of the session.

Withdrawals and Refunds • Full refunds will be issued when a class is canceled by the Adult Education Department, or fees may be applied to another class.

• No refunds will be issued after the first class meeting. There will be no refunds for one-night classes. The Motorcycle Basic Rider Course and Experienced Rider Course tuition fee is non-refundable.

• A $10 cancellation fee will be withheld from all refunds except for Job Training Programs which have a $100 non-refundable fee.

• Books and supplies are non-refundable.

Free Parking Polaris offers an open parking policy. Visitors/Students/Staff can park in any of the available parking areas in the front, back or side lots.
