PRIMOSIC: Tradition and Progress

Generations of excellence; a region with ancient roots and forward-thinking; and wines with character and soul that tell the story. Welcome to Primosic.

“Territory, people, wine: our essence can be summarized in these three words.”

The Territory

Italian, yet with an identity that is Slovenian, German, Slavic, and Venetian, the gentle hills of the Collio Goriziano enjoys warm influences from the Adriatic Sea only 20 km south and cooling breezes from the northerly Bora winds. The Primosic home village of Oslavia and the neighbouring town of Gorizia are the centre of “Mitteleuropa” (Middle Europe), historically a beautiful, lush area of quality wine, olive oil, and fruits.

The Collio hills have nurtured grape varieties originally brought from France (such as Merlot and Chardonnay) as well as indigenous vines (Ribolla Gialla, Friulano and Refosco). “The Ribolla Gialla has always been our local variety and our local wine,” says Marko Primosic. Ribolla Gialla has also anchored the distinctive “Orange Wine” style, wine from a white grape fermented on its skins, offering powerful complexity.

The People

“Our family has lived in Oslavia for more than 500 years,” says Marko. “We are Italian citizens, but at home, we also speak Slovenian, and my grandparents spoke German.” During the 19th century, the area was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and Marko’s grandfather, Carlo Primosic, transported his wines to Vienna 450km by railway, then by cart.

Carlo’s wines, the region, and its people were altered by wars and the re-drawing of national boundaries. The destruction of the first World War saw its hills, vineyards, and towns laid bare, its people facing the challenge of recovery in a new identity as part of Italy.

The Second World War brought new trials, and in 1956, these challenges came to 15-year-old Silvan Primosic, fatherless, who built the new Primosic winery and rebuilt their winemaking heritage. Sylvan embraced Ribolla Gialla with a new approach for fresh, young wine styles. His work led the Collio to awards and international recognition. In fact, Primosic has the distinction of producing the first bottle with the Collio DOC appellation.

Today Silvan’s sons Marko and Boris continue to work the Primosic magic, with Marko taking responsibility for the promotion of the winery abroad and Boris overseeing the cellar. Their approach is to treasure the equilibrium and strength of the vineyard ecosystem, encouraging biodiversity and using organic and sustainable practices. Silvan is still active, welcoming guests to the winery, and (according to his sons) remains the undisputed boss of the winery!

The Wines

Think Yellow is the Primosic tagline, referring to the vibrant colour of Ribolla Gialla. “I believe that Ribolla Gialla is the best symbol of our identity; it has always been here, it is an anchor that we cannot renounce, it is a thread that runs through our history and our tradition,” says Marko. “On the fragrant hills around our village of Oslavia, the ponca soils hold back the vigour of this vine and produce fragrant, complex fruit for noble wines.”

The Primosic collection focuses first on quality, working with Ribolla Gialla, Refosco, Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Merlot, as well as others. Wines express several winemaking philosophies linked to approaches for fresh, young wines; for Collio DOC wines showing some ageing; and for historic Oslavia Orange wines.

Two approaches with the same variety make these philosophies clear. The Pinot Grigio Friuli DOC (blue label), fermented in stainless steel, is crisp, fresh, and lively, a companion for salads, appetizers, or snacks. The Pinot Grigio Collio DOC, with fruit drawn from the Collio Goriziano hills and aged in old oak,

shows more structure, minerality, and elegance, a beautiful pairing with pork, pasta, or a cheese and onion tart.

The flagship wine is “Klin,” named for the wedge-shaped vineyard that produces a field blend of Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Ribolla Gialla. The wine is produced with low interventions, natural ferments, and is aged 2 years in barrel for a wine of intensity, complexity, and vibrancy layered by exotic spices and Mediterranean herbal notes. Klin will transform a special occasion from a dinner of fish, prawns, or grilled chicken.

The Primosic Orange wines are iconic skin-fermented, complex, textured wines of elegance, style, and vibrancy. With fruit drawn from special Collio crus, winemaking that respects the aromatic intensity and flavours of the grape skins, these are orange wines that set the contemporary standard. The textural complexity and aromatic intensity of the Friulano “Skin” Orange wine makes an amazingly beautiful companion for equally bold dishes.

Wine lovers agree that the best wines are not just technically beautiful; they have an intensity and energy that arrest conversation and continue to enchant long after the last sip. Primosic offers such an experience.

Genuwine Cellars: cultivating dreams, harvesting design

When people first learn that I work for a company that builds custom wine cellars, the response I receive is generally one of keen interest and enthusiasm. “You get to drink wine for a living?”

The answer—“only sometimes”—is a tad anticlimactic, but then I like to tell a fantastical story.

I say: “It makes no sense, but if you were a billionaire and wanted the absolute best wine cellar in the world, you would come to Winnipeg. You would talk to Genuwine Cellars.”

As modest Canadians (much less salt-of-the-Earth Winnipeggers), it is difficult to wrap our brains around this, mine included.

But like I said, it’s nonsensical. And that’s one of the things I like best about what we do.

We take wine cellars and elevate them into works of art. We take a concept as utilitarian as shelving and reimagine it as a luxury to be coveted. We take the “sensical” and transform it into the nonsensical.

Anything is Possible

Genuwine Cellars started life in 1995 and slowly established a reputation in North America as the quality leader in traditional wooden wine racking in an industry historically known for slipshod production and dull design. Architects, builders, designers and clients embraced not only the quality difference, but also Genuwine’s ever-ready willingness to push boundaries.

The introduction of new wood species (e.g., walnut, maple, rosewood), new exotic materials (e.g., padouk, wenge), and new twists on classic designs (e.g., curved wine racking) earned Genuwine the reputation as a truly “custom” millwork company, willing to explore uncharted territory in the name of building a better wine cellar.

Year after year, project by project, Genuwine matured from its humble woodshop origins to evolve into its current form—an international boutique design and

build firm specializing in custom, architectural wine cellars.

2012 was a watershed year for the company. The industry was in the midst of massive change. The 2008 economic crash had finally caught up to the luxury real estate sector. And like a prizefighter being groomed for success in the early stages of his career, Genuwine now stood ready and poised to take the title of the “World Leader in Custom Wine Cellars.”

Nothing Normal

Like most wine nerds, I can still remember the first time I tasted that one bottle that completely altered my perspective on what wine could be. I liken the experience to hearing an ultra-premium audiophile system for the first time—the volume increases past a certain threshold and your brain begins to anticipate distortion. But the clarity somehow remains and the result is a magical experience, opening your mind to new possibilities.

I’ve experienced this with about 7 or 8 bottles and each time I feel this overwhelming sense of amazement and pleasure.

I relay this story to provide some insight into our company’s design philosophy. Our objective is to create works of art that carry the same power to confuse the senses and transcend the concept of what is possible.

We are the World Leaders in Custom Wine Cellars, but we are also artists, craftsmen and dreamers, making the impossible happen every day. If you want undulating glass wine racks, we will create that for you. If you want a functioning river rock stream inside your cellar, we will do that too. If you want a wine cellar on the moon, we will find a way (it won’t be inexpensive).

We specialize in the unfathomable. We are experts in the unimaginable. And that we can bring both into reality is what makes no sense, in the most beautiful way possible.

the Ring

The Ring has been drawing attention from several design publications and has been nominated for a number of awards.

Q-Curve

Designed by the world’s leading wine cellar designer, Shaila Queau, her geometric Q-Curve design has been sought after throughout North America. Inspired by nature and the desire to bring a more organic focus to a traditionally rectilinear industry.

Celebrates Six Years! body measure

Melina Elliot and Erica Henderson are passionate about preventative care and long-term wellness.

Elliot and Henderson met while working on a longevity study at the University of Manitoba. By the time the study was complete, they were convinced that the DEXA scan technology they had been using could play a critical role in helping their community understand and plan their health in a completely novel way.

When Body Measure opened in 2018, it was the first clinic to bring the Dexa technology to the public. Their vision was to transform our approach to health care by focusing on prevention grounded in knowledge. Their diverse backgrounds—Elliot has a master’s in science in Community Health, and Henderson has a background in X-ray technology and fitness—created a unique set of skills to approach this task.

Dexa scan is used in hospitals to measure bone density—but Elliot and Henderson recognized that it had the potential to do so much more. “Here, we use the Dexa scan to look at bone density, muscle mass, body fat, and visceral fat,” explains Henderson, who has advanced training in Dexa from McMaster University. “Based on these levels, we can assess your short- and long-term risk for osteoporosis, sarcopenia, type two diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and so much more. In addition, our specialized ultrasound, the FibroScan, looks at your liver health. These results also mean that we can help you optimize your workouts and your nutrition for health and wellness in your everyday life.”

The services at Body Measure do not stop at diagnostic technologies, however, as diagnostics are incomplete without interpretation and follow-up. Their staff includes a dietitian and a nurse practitioner who are there to interpret results and help you set up a long-term wellness plan based on your own health goals.

Registered Dietitian Angela Martens

Angela Martens brings her 30 years of experience as a Registered Dietitian to our team. She provides evidencebased nutrition advice tailored to your body composition results, current eating habits, and health goals. Her primary focus at the clinic is on weight loss and the management of chronic health conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes.

Building and Rebuilding

Continuing their research into science-based health and wellness, Elliot and Henderson discovered non-invasive techniques that use electromagnetic energy to support physical health, restore muscle strength, and help sculpt our bodies and tone our faces—and they were the first to bring them to Manitoba!

The Emsculpt Neo uses electromagnetic energy and radiofrequency. This therapy destroys fat cells while building muscle in key areas, including abs, glutes, biceps, quads, and calves. In addition to sculpting muscles, Emsculpt is an effective tool to help heal and rebuild after injuries. Clients with bad backs find that Emsculpt therapy on their abdominal muscles can provide the strength they need to support recovery in their backs.

The Emsella machine is a critical new therapy for women who have lost muscle strength due to childbirth and menopause. The “kegel chair” uses the same electromagnetic energy as Emsculpt to rapidly tone, strengthen, and lift the pelvic floor. This therapy can improve incontinence and boost sexual wellness.

Emface uses non-invasive technology (radio frequency and electromagnetic stimulation) to effortlessly restore muscle and build skin-tightening collagen and elastic to lift your face and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Bella Moda Home

Bella Moda knows how to make a lingering impression.

When you walk into the Bella Moda showroom, you enter a series of vignettes that embody the true possibilities of good design. Couches rest on textured rugs with artwork— sometimes bold and sometimes whimsical—framing the scene. Dining room tables are dappled in sunlight that catches glass and metal accents. A few steps in, you can’t help but picture living your best life in each of these rooms.

Since the home décor shop launched in 2009, its reputation as a design destination has grown steadily. Indeed, the two Winnipeg families who own Bella Moda—Ken and Carolin Burke and Maribeth and Non Marana—have a deep background in furniture and design spanning 34 years. In that time, their focus has never wavered from impeccable customer service—though their offerings have grown along with the needs of their clientele. In addition to relationships with some of the best designers in the city, Bella Moda offers their clients complete design services: from interior design consultations to home visits to follow up after delivery.

Bella Moda’s first offering is a glimpse at the possibilities— and the follow-through is step-by-step service that guides you from concept to final design. In between those two moments is not simply a sale: it is a collaboration in colour matching, fabric research, and helping the client find the right design for the space.

“What people sometimes struggle to envision is scale. Is this too big, is this too small, how should that fit?” explains Carolin. “Often, we will go for a home visit so we can help them choose a piece that is the right size for the space. Some customers prefer to work on their spaces in steps, so we can break down each next stage for them.”

When they started, the Bella Moda team focused on seating, but they have grown with their clientele’s needs, pouring their design knowledge into bedrooms, dining rooms, and accents. And now, this spirit of growth has led them to their newest expansion: Bella Moda Blinds.

Brand Partners

For quality manufacturing and design, Bella Moda buys furniture almost exclusively made in Italy and North America. In addition to having the only Natuzzi Italia and American Leather galleries in Winnipeg, they carry Italian brands Bracci and Calligaris and Canadian brands Palliser, Gus Modern Furniture, Trica Furniture, Huppe Furniture, and Stylus.

Trends

• TEXTURE: Shifting from a focus on leather, fabric upholstery is coming back.

• LINES: Furniture has moved from being very linear to softer curves.

• COLOUR: Light and fresh with lots of pastels— every single supplier is offering blush right now.

• MATERIALS: Mixing metals in the kitchen is popular—and gold is back! Walnut and light washed oaks are on trend.

Bella Moda Blinds

The decision to carry blinds was driven by requests from customers and adds another dimension to the interior design services Bella Moda offers their clients. Once the decision was made to expand into blinds, the next step, according to Ken, was a no-brainer. “Hunter Douglas is the biggest name in blinds. And if we are going to do it, we are going to do it with the best.”

Hunter Douglas is not only top of its field in innovation, child safety, light control, and energy efficiency, the range of styles, fabrics, and colours is unparalleled. As their blind specialist, Non has been taking in an incredible amount of information to guide their clients through the process of choosing blinds.

In a striking nook in the showroom dedicated to Hunter Douglas blinds, Non has everything he needs to simplify what might initially seem like a daunting array of choices. “The first step is to come in and narrow down what style, colour, and fabric you like. Next, we go into the home with samples to get an idea of the space, the lighting, and the dimensions to decide what will work best. From there, we can finalize details such as exact measurements and the installation process.”

Blinds are just one more customer-driven step in the evolution of Bella Moda. “As you develop long-term relationships with customers, they want to come back, so we want to keep offering them more,” says Maribeth. “They already trust the quality, and we know their style. If we are already helping them create a room, we want to go a step further to extend that design vision.”

o call a place “home” is more than naming an address: home is an identity and a commitment. When Pedro Pavone-Voglino emigrated from Italy to Chile in the early 20th century, he promised himself he would build his new home on the cornerstones of respect, honesty, community and responsibility. He held to these commitments when he and his son Félix later acquired the land “chacra Santa Ema” in the heart of the Maipo Valley to build a life in wine.

The 65-year journey has taken the family winery into its third and fourth generations. Today, Pedro’s grandchildren are active in vineyard, winery and export management: Rossana Pavone oversees finance; Félix, the vineyards & production. The fourth generation—Sebastián, Felipe and Guillermo—are actively involved in domestic sales and exports.

Santa Ema wines must reflect their place of origin and our commitments, says Andrés Sanhueza, general manager and head winemaker for Santa Ema. “It is in a series of details that must be met from vineyard to bottle that preserves the family seal of quality and consistency over time.”

To support a diverse range of quality wines, the family has expanded vineyard holdings. Anchored by their historic properties in the Isla de Maipo sub-region, they have

acquired select vineyard properties in cool Leyda near the Pacific coastline, in highly regarded Pirque, at the edge of the Andes, and further south in the Cachapoal Valley in Peumo.

For Santa Ema, the unwavering pursuit of quality wine has also meant a pursuit of respect for their team, land and community. “The production of wine is done through people,” says Andrés, “so the team is like an extension of the family itself.” Like other members of the winemaking team, for example, Andrés has been with Santa Ema for more than two decades. “The idea is for everyone to feel part of the family. We are a super committed team, and it is a wonderful working environment with solid pillars.”

In the winery, they work toward respectful, low-intervention practices and are in the process of gaining certification for vegan and gluten-free production. “We want to make our wines under an atmosphere of balance, where both land and workers are respected, “comments Andrés. “We work toward biodiversity in the vineyards and have 100% sustainable viticulture, with a view to eventually bring it to organic production.”

The family commitment to community is long term. Santa Ema actively supports local education, school renovations and libraries. They have also worked toward Santa Ema 30K, a project to showcase small business goods made

within a 30-km range of the winery. While the ravages of the pandemic have meant a slowdown in tourism traffic, the family is confident this commitment will see a long-term benefit for their many small-business neighbours.

It has been a 65-year drive to distinguish Santa Ema with a seal of quality and consistency, says Andrés. With the firm anchors of home, community, great terroirs, and a great team, clearly the path to the future is set.

The Wines

Santa Ema showcases the best of their terroirs, their approach and their people in the wine portfolio. The Select Terroir Reserva range does just what it promises: offer up the most expressive fruit from the best locations. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé wines are drawn from fruit grown in the warmth of Isla de Maipo, where the climate is moderated by the cooling winds from both the Andes and the coast. The Select Terroir Carménère originates in Peumo, Cachapoal, where the cool nights and warm days produce a wine with great balance and structure.

The Gran Reserva line, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines, authentically reflect the concentration, quality and judicious oak ageing of particular parcels and lots. The wines of Santa Ema Amplus (Latin for “distinguished”) offer rare glimpses of some of the best terroirs of the line.

At the pinnacle of the collection are Catalina and Rivalta, drawn from the very best 20 barrels of red produced each year. The amazing Bordeaux blend Catalina pays tribute to the mother of the third generation, presented with a beautifully elegant cloth label. Rivalta is named in tribute to the Piemontese Italian origin of the founder. From the Maipo Alto, skirting the edges of the Andes, Rivalta offers an unforgettable experience of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Carignan and Syrah.

Retirees Finding Luxury for Less with Life Lease

“The Link” is the latest development connecting the 55+ crowd to popular trend in retirement living.

What comes to mind when you think of retirement? Probably relaxation, travelling and plenty of time for hobbies and loved ones. What about when you think of retirement living?

For many baby boomers, it’s rapidly changing. They’re not only choosing to live in stylish new communities, they’re embracing luxurious new lifestyles as well. It’s called life lease, and it’s an increasingly popular trend for those 55+.

55+ Life Lease actually has a long history in Canada with the first communities appearing in the late ‘80s in Manitoba. The draw for retirees? Staying connected to their peers while having the fun, independent lifestyle they want — plus they can utilize a portion of their home equity to secure a very reasonable rental payment.

“For a lot of people 55+, it’s the perfect way to enjoy the luxury of a new condo without the same high price point or level of commitment,” says John Vander Kooy, sales representative for The Link, a life lease community soon to be under development in south-west Winnipeg.

Located at 731 Sterling Lyon Parkway, The Link allows residents to pay a one-time, fully refundable entrance fee, followed by a manageable monthly rent. In return, residents are treated to some pretty lavish new living spaces and a number of additional amenities to sweeten the deal. That means everything from a coffee bar to music rooms. The rooftop terrace alone will house a bocce court, putting green, BBQ bar, game room and virtual golf simulator.

“We’ll be building a spa, complete with massage rooms and a sauna, a fitness facility, a woodworking room, a winemaking room, a theatre and a lot more,” says Vander Kooy.

According to Vander Kooy, The Link is designed for a new generation of retirees who want more amenities and financial freedom in retirement.

“The idea is to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle at home but also more time and money to spend on what you love doing. Life lease frees up your finances so you can enjoy more travelling, volunteering, time with family — and you have the time because you don’t have to worry about maintaining your property,” says Vander Kooy.

Vander Kooy says a number of people who are 55+ choose life lease because their current home no longer suits their needs.

“For many retirees, staying in their family home isn’t as comfortable as they think it will be,” says Vander Kooy. “With maintenance becoming more difficult with age, it causes stress for family members who step in to help.”

Life lease is an attractive way to downsize, says Vander Kooy, with modern design and appliances often providing a significant upgrade over retirees’ old homes.

“We truly believe retirement can be the most exciting time in a person’s life, and we’re designing

an environment where people can embrace it,” he says.

From a financial perspective, the amenities are essentially icing on the cake for residents since they’re available at no additional cost. Plus, the price of a suite is less than half of that of comparable condominiums, which have far fewer amenities to enjoy.

“We’re talking about saving hundreds of dollars a month when comparing the same square footage to the average new rental,” says Vander Kooy. “And the added value of being in the community can’t be understated. It’s why 55+ Life Lease is more popular now than ever.”

As the number of Canadians 55+ steadily rises, so are their expectations, inspiring life lease communities like The Link to raise the bar for what retirement can be.

Euphorbia: Green from the Inside Out

“It’s a symbiotic relationship.”

Felix Gaber is talking about what plants bring to his life, but he might as well be talking about his entire philosophy at Euphorbia, a local business with over 40 years of experience in commercial and residential tropical interior plantscaping.

Felix’s father, Byron Gaber, worked for years in greenhouses before establishing Euphorbia in 1981. His philosophy was to work tirelessly to provide quality plant maintenance services to his residential customers. Felix grew up in the business, starting when he was 16, and took over as president in 2015 when his father retired. He has continued his father’s legacy of personalized service. “When clients call, they’re going to talk to me,” says Felix. “They know that whatever work gets done, I’m the one who oversees it and makes sure it gets done properly.”

Euphorbia’s keen ability to home in on clients’ needs has built up the kind of client base that companies dream of. In fact, some have been with the company for over 40 years. Second-generation clients have even “inherited” their services. “When our long-term clients have downsized and sold their homes,” shared Felix, “they have these incredible tropical plants that have been a part of their homes for years. So their kids get the plants in their homes, and we move with the plants.”

Over the past decade, Felix has expanded Euphorbia from a primarily residential plantscaping and maintenance business to services that also include commercial plant installation and maintenance (now making up about 70% of the clientele), seasonal outdoor displays, tropical plant rental services, plant doctor calls, and landscaping.

A client relationship with Felix starts with a phone call. “New clients usually say, ‘I have plants, but they’re not doing well. Can you come help me?’ Or, ‘I don’t have plants, but I’d like to have some, and I’d like them to look great.’” Felix will visit the site—either residential or commercial—and assess the space’s current plant status. If you have plants, he may recommend a change of plants or a change of location, or even diagnose an insect problem or blight. If you don’t, he will evaluate the space, the lighting, and your vision and offer suggestions about what will thrive and survive in your space.

“I want clients to have beautiful plants that give them what they want—the joy of having something grow for them. Once we have found the right plants for the client, we offer weekly maintenance to make sure they always look good. If, for some reason, they start not looking good, we replace them as part of the contract.”

Felix’s passion for bringing nature indoors has brought him into some exciting new creative projects. “I did my first moss art piece 8 years ago. I saw that as potential for clients who want to bring nature indoors but don’t have the space or

Euphorbia owner Felix Gaber (photos by Ian McCausland)

the light to make that happen. Clients love that it’s a zeromaintenance option. Once we install it, it’s like hanging a piece of artwork. You just put it up and then enjoy it.”

Inspired by this philosophy, Felix and his team have recently been working on natural artwork installations. “These pieces are still highly designed, but they feel natural. We use pieces of birch trunks, rocks, and flowers to create installations that are very unique to the Manitoba experience of being outdoors. It feels like you’re walking in the Whiteshell. The beauty of these pieces is that we can custom design them to fit whatever space the client desires and make them any shape. We have done circles, rectangles, and squares. We can fill an entire wall or do a combination of pieces. It’s an incredible outlet for our artistic sides.”

For Felix and his team, building long-term relationships and tending plants over time to watch them grow and flourish in people’s homes and workspaces is enhanced by the opportunity to flex their creative muscles through natural art installations and seasonal and special event displays.

Ultimately, when Felix describes working with plants, he could just as well be speaking about his clients and his whole philosophy: “They’re providing for me, and I’m providing for them. I’m trying to make them happy, and if I do, then everyone gets to enjoy beautiful, healthy plants.”

Prota Clinic is a Manitoba-based clinic that provides clients with an Executive Health Assessment. Using proactive detection and advice, we can help you live longer and also improve your quality of life into the future.

WHAT IS AN EXECUTIVE HEALTH ASSESSMENT?

The Executive Health Assessment is a very thorough screening that is designed to find problems that are obvious, find problems you might not be aware of, and identify risk factors based on your lifestyle, family history, and current condition. The purpose is not to provide treatment, but rather a big picture of your current health and a plan to improve your quality of life and longevity. That process is led by physicians, and includes lab testing, imaging, and consultations with our deititian and our physiotherapy partners. All women, as part of the Executive Health Assessment, undergo a thorough women's health screening process at no additional cost. This includes special lab tests, HPV screening, ultrasound and a visit with our experienced gynaecologist who does a female targeted exam and history.

Once you have gone through the assessment, your Prota team meets to share results, discuss recommendations, and create a plan for you. The plan could be activity- or lifestyle-targeted based on your risk factors and also on your current lifestyle. If you have recurring conditions, athletic or physiotherapy can be set up. For the elderly, physiotherapists can work on quality-of-life care, like prevention of falling and injury, balance, or walking aids. If you are active or a serious athlete, and are already monitoring diet and exercise, the team can focus on how to maximize your lifestyle for training. Our team can also help with weight-loss goals.

WHAT IS ASSESSED?

The most common medical issues threatening wellness such as cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, strokes, and others are not only targeted by the examination and medical history, but also by lab and imaging studies that go beyond routine exams. In addition, nutrition, physical fitness, and lifestyle are assessed to identify specific needs such as injury-prevention and general health.

DO YOU REPLACE MY FAMILY DOCTOR?

The recommendations that emerge from your annual Executive Health Assessment are a tool to help you set goals to prolong and improve your quality of life. We appreciate that people have doctors with whom they have built sometimes life-long relationships, and we are not seeking to replace the medical care they provide. We encourage you to discuss the recommendations with our healthcare staff as well as your family doctor. After the assessment, if you don’t have and are looking for primary care in following through on the recommendations, we do have physicians on staff to help. Prota’s primary purpose is the assessment, but if any clients need healthcare support following the assessment, we are here to help. Clients are always encouraged to call with questions or concerns about their health following the assessment, and access our healthcare services.

WHO SHOULD GET AN EXECUTIVE HEALTH ASSESSMENT?

The profound level of care we offer lends itself to providing cutting-edge non-insured services in Manitoba. People who want to know more about their current health profile and their life expectancy can get those answers through the Executive Health Assessment. In addition, those with family medical histories that raise flags about longevity can also get peace of mind from the annual assessments and the strategic health planning that they involve.

In addition to individuals, many businesses require employees and executives to get Executive Health Assessments regularly as part of Human Resources management. It encourages their employees to be proactive about their health. Businesses that are interested in assessments for their employees should contact us at Prota Clinic to explore options.

HOW DOES PROTA CLINIC’S EXECUTIVE HEALTH ASSESSMENT COMPARE TO SIMILAR SERVICES OFFERED ACROSS THE BORDER?

Overwhelmingly, our clients that have previously sought preventative health assessments elsewhere say that Prota Clinic offers an assessment experience that exceeds their expectations. Our assessment reports, as well as the follow-up planning, are extensive and comprehensive. In addition, because we are local and our healthcare associates have practices in the community, we are here to help our clients navigate the follow-up care in the province, which is often the most daunting part of implementing effective preventative healthcare strategies. We know the best specialists in the city that will give you the best care. We will help you see this through.

In addition to individual benefits, businesses benefit from access to a comprehensive local assessment provider, as it eliminates the loss of employee time and costs associated with travel to another city or country to have a health assessment completed.

IS THE EXECUTIVE HEALTH ASSESSMENT COVERED BY MEDICARE?

The Executive Health Assessment is an uninsured service that does not fall under Medicare, but may be covered by Health Spending Accounts, much like ancillary healthcare services like optometry. Check with your insurance benefit provider to see if our preventative healthcare services are covered. In addition, the services may be tax-deductible.

WHAT OTHER SERVICES DOES PROTA CLINIC OFFER?

We are a comprehensive clinic that offers the best in uninsured health services. Our associates offer physiotherapy, athletic therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, and nutritional counselling. Our Vein Therapy Centre offers cutting-edge, doctor-led procedures including laser venous ablation and radiofrequency ablation that requires no significant anesthetics. It is a walk-in procedure that can be done in one hour. We can treat everything from the smallest spider veins to varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and ulcers. The Prota Clinic Cosmetic Therapy & Laser Centre specializes in snoring therapy, hot sculpting, wrinkle reduction, hair removal, and non-invasive laser face lifts.

If the early buzz about Interstellar Rodeo 2016 is any indication, the festival of music, wine, and food is set to exceed the rave reviews garnered by last year’s inaugural Winnipeg lineup.

Taking place August 12–14 at the festival stage at The Forks—in the heart of the city and with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights as a backdrop—this year’s roster features critically acclaimed artists from across the globe, with an emphasis on contemporary roots, Americana, and singer-songwriters.

Headliners this year include Chicago’s Wilco, super-group case/lang/viers (featuring Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs), and Serena Ryder, with a deep selection of bands and musicians rounding out the roster: the Strumbellas, Margo Price, Wintersleep, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Lee Fields and the Expressions, Whitehorse, Skydiggers, The Wet Secrets, and more.

Like last year’s festival, each artist will be paired with a feature wine sourced through three of Manitoba’s private wine stores— Banville & Jones Wine Co., Kenaston Wine Market and The Winehouse. Stores are once again working with Interstellar Rodeo wine curator Ben MacPhee-Sigurdson to create perfect pairings for each artist.

It’s an idea that’s new to Winnipeg, as is the fact that guests can enjoy the wine paired with each of the artists in any area of the outdoor festival. Whether guests are sitting on the grass and enjoying the atmosphere or standing up front watching a festival fave, Interstellar Rodeo servers circulate with the wine paired with the artist on stage, which can be enjoyed in the festival’s custom Govino stemless wine glass.

So how do you pair wine and music? Take Australia’s Vance Joy, who played last year’s Interstellar Rodeo, as an example. Joy’s catchy hit Riptide was blowing up at the time; the featured wine

THE INTERSTELLAR RODEO

paired with joy was Majella’s The Musician, a Shiraz-Cabernet blend also from Australia that, like Joy’s music, is approachable and made in a style that’s widely liked.

In addition to wine and music, those attending Interstellar Rodeo can choose from a wide array of food trucks, purchase band/ festival merchandise on-site, and meet some of their favourite artists at the merchandise tent before or after they tear up the stage. Need a break from the wine? There’s beer, cider, margaritas, coffees and much more to enjoy.

Tolaini Boutique Wines in Tuscany

Many of us have dreams of returning to our roots, but few do it in the spectacular fashion of Pierluigi Tolaini, proprietor and moving force behind the Tolaini Winery in Tuscany. Pierluigi kept his dream alive for 40 years after his emigration to Canada at 20 years old in 1959. Then a successful career in transportation gave him the means to return to Tuscany, look for a winery, and live the next dream: to make one of Italy’s best wines, no less.

Four years of research eventually led to the acquisition of an estate in the prime Chianti Classico producing area of Castelnuovo Berardenga, south of Florence and east of Siena. Tolaini has obvious potential: just one look at the ampitheatre vineyards tells you that. Experts have likened the Castelnuovo Berardenga area in style terms to Pauillac in Bordeaux, producing wines with rare power and intensity.

To make the best wines possible, the first necessity is the suitability of the vineyards, since it is a truism of winemaking that wines are only as good as the grapes that the soil produces—“the best fruit produces the best wine” is the fundamental principle of the Tolaini estate. In fact, the property produces fruit of unsurpassable quality, and its fruit is evident in every sip of the estate’s four wines.

The second necessity is people to provide their expertise, which led Pierluigi to put together a highly

Pier Luigi Tolaini, winery owner and entrepreneur, with his daughters Lia Banville and Tina Jones

qualified team of professionals, who share his vision about making the best wines possible in this unique terroir. Diego Bonato runs the winery, but the most recent recruit is Ruggero Mazzilli, who is the founder of the Experimental Station for Sustainable Viticulture in nearby Gaiole in Chianti and now Tolaini’s consulting agronomist.

The estate is young, not even 20 years old in its current incarnation, but the results are already beginning to come in.

Gambero Rosso, Parker, Suckling, and Wine Spectator have voiced

their approval for the four red wines Tolaini produces:

• Picconero – Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5% Petit Verdot. The top wine produced only in the best years

• Valdisanti – Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, with 5% Cabernet Franc

• Al Passo – a Supertuscan blend of Sangiovese with 15% Merlot

• Chianti Classico Riserva – the cru version ”Montebello Vigneto 7” has been awarded the new superior status: Gran Selezione

Dr. Bruce McFarlane Village Orthodontics

Mission Statement: At Village Orthodontics, we believe your orthodontic care is a very personal experience. Your relationship with your doctor and all of the sta is caring and focused. Detail, passion, evaluation and technology are all used to chart the course to complete orthodontic health for you and your family.

Dr. R. Bruce McFarlane likes to use a golf analogy when describing the advances that have been made in the field of orthodontics.

“If you pull out a steel club and try to knock the cover off the ball, the ball doesn’t go very far,” said Dr. McFarlane. “But if you pull out a titanium club with a nice easy swing, a beautiful follow-through and you’re patient, it just sails.”

“I figured that out in orthodontics but not in golf. I still want to knock the cover off the ball!”

The Village Orthodontics Winnipeg office celebrated its 10th anniversary at the Taylor Avenue location in September. Village Orthodontics also has practices in Mississauga, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Guelph, Oakville, Brampton and Thornhill, Ont.

“On a number of different fronts, orthodontic research has allowed us to understand more about the science of tooth movement and one of the big things that has come out is how lower force levels actually move teeth considerably more efficiently, with less possible damage to teeth and supporting structures and with less pain,” said Dr. McFarlane, who graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1984 and from the University of Western Ontario in 1992 as a Specialist in Orthodontics.

“The braces themselves have gotten a lot smaller, less conspicuous and more comfortable, especially with children where we still use a lot of the metal braces on the outside of teeth,” said Dr. McFarlane. “But we also do a lot of tooth-coloured braces and we have tooth-coloured wires as well.”

With the addition of Dr. Ines Guedes in July, the Village Orthodontics Winnipeg office has two orthodontists plus a staff of 10.

“I think we’re on the cutting edge in orthodontics,” said Dr. Guedes, who received her Doctorate in Dental Surgery at the top of her class in her native Brazil before being accepted into the TMJ disorders and orofacial pain Master of Science program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton where she also taught as clinical instructor in the Dental Faculty and TMD/Orofacial Pain Graduate program. “Also we have a staff that is very focused and friendly and attentive to individual patient needs.”

After her time in Edmonton, Dr. Guedes moved to Winnipeg to join the Orthodontic Graduate Program at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Guedes had braces herself when she was younger and the experience inspired her to help both young and adult patients to achieve their dream smiles.

“Braces improved my smile and gave me confidence,” she said. “It was life changing and I wanted to pass that on to (her patients).”

As well as the traditional metal and porcelain braces, Village Orthodontics offers lingual or on-the-tongue-side braces and clear Invisalign® removable aligners which offer dental correction without the ‘tin grin’ stigma.

“We find that (they are popular) especially with adult patients who want to get straight teeth but don’t want to advertise to the world what they’re up to. They’re certainly good for that,” Dr. McFarlane said.

There’s a lot less stigma attached to (having braces) than when I was a kid for sure.

“There’s a lot less stigma attached to (having braces) than when I was a kid for sure.”

Village Orthodontics boasts all of the latest new technologies and innovations. The practice uses optical scanners to create digital images and x-rays which are a lot better for the patient in terms of radiation and exposure.

They also utilize AcceleDent - a simple-to-use hands-free device designed for faster orthodontic treatment which sends vibrations through the bone for 20 minutes a day – as well as Propel, a micro-invasive option able to accelerate orthodontics by stimulating more cellular activity in the bone thus speeding up the movement of teeth.

It’s all about making the process faster and more comfortable.

“We strive to make it a lot of fun around here,” he said. “Nowadays, orthodontics has become less threatening and less painful. We celebrate the final results every day with our patients.”

Strong Bones, Stronger You

How Body Measure Inc. Is Changing the Way We Approach Bone Health

As we age, bone health becomes increasingly important— but too often, we don’t realize there’s a problem until it’s too late. At Body Measure Inc., we believe in prevention, early detection, and empowering our clients with the knowledge they need to build a stronger future—literally.

Located in the heart of Winnipeg, Body Measure offers advanced bone density testing using Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), the gold standard for measuring bone mineral density. Unlike traditional X-rays, a DEXA scan provides a precise, painless, and non-invasive assessment of your bone health. It detects even the earliest signs of bone loss, allowing you to take action before a fracture occurs.

The statistics are sobering: one in three women will develop osteoporosis after the age of 50, and of these women, half will break a bone—sometimes with lifealtering consequences. Even more concerning, women can lose 10–20% of their bone density in the first five to seven years after menopause due to the sharp decline in estrogen. That’s why we emphasize early screening and prevention, especially for women in midlife.

At Body Measure, we help clients track their bone density over time and identify modifiable risk factors like nutrition, exercise, and hormone changes. But we don’t just diagnose—we support. Our team includes Registered Dietitians and Nurse Practitioners who work with you to develop a personalized, evidence-based plan to maintain or improve your bone health. From recommending the right supplements to designing weight-bearing exercise routines, our approach is both holistic and practical.

Whether you’re looking to prevent osteoporosis, recover from a diagnosis, or simply stay proactive about aging well, Body Measure is here to help.

Visit bodymeasure.ca or call 204-691-1887 to book your scan and take the first step toward a stronger you.
