Lora, the traveling turtle, is the new character of Guanacaste Airport. This turtle, besides being the symbol and ambassador of the airport, also promotes the values of the terminal, such as the protection of the coasts and seashells.
The character is represented by a turtle of the species lepidochelys kempii, popularly known as olive ridley sea turtle.
Lora, the traveling turtle, is born on the Guanacaste coast, grows in international waters, and is a scientific mystery that, in love with the North Pacific beaches, returns to lay its eggs and raise hundreds of baby turtles.
This spectacle generates a particular similarity with the tourists that visit the province, who, like Lora, and in love with the destination, travel thousands of kilometers to enjoy Guanacaste’s natural and cultural beauties. Many people repeat the trip, always full of new experiences.
Lora is the main face of a campaign for the protection of seashells. This pioneer project of Guanacaste Air- port is called “Be a shell hero.” Its purpose is to protect the coasts of the province and the country.
It is transcendental to make the population aware of the problem caused by the shell extraction and its negative impact on the coasts. There are alarming numbers at the airport. Between 2021 and 2022, the terminal’s security posts seized 2,080 kg of seashells. Guanacaste Airport will make Lora the one who educates and generates awareness among tourists who visit our destination. The main objective is to ensure that the shells stay on the beaches and do not reach to the airport.
Lora’s first mission seeks to transcend the provincial limits to take this initiative to a national level. In addition, it invites Guanacaste leaders to spread the message and also be part of the project.
