Passed down through three generations of the Firmin family, Jonathan Firmin has been the owner of Nimrif RC for over 13 years. His father, Paul passed down the reins to Jonathan in January 2007. As a family, they have always been passionate about not only retailing RC models but racing them in local and world-renowned competitions. Since Jonathan was a very young boy he has obtained a considerable number of trophies under his name, it is clear that his passion and love for the industry has carried through the years to his business which has been received very well by his loyal customers.

ou may know Nimrif RC as Nimrif Models, Jonathan decided to rebrand his company due to the diverse number of models he is now selling from Land, Sea and Air. The shop was originally named Nimrif Models because they only sold sailing and powerboats that were bespoke designed, manufactured and distributed all by themselves.

Nimrif RC stock a wide range of RC models, their best sellers at the moment are the small rock crawlers and the little speed cars which reach a speed of 22mph. These are great, affordable options to have a bit of fun with! Nimrif also stock an incredible Tamyia truck complete with VR goggles so you can view the experience as the 1st person view from the driver seat, watching all the controls working seamlessly.

Jonathan never felt pressured to take the business over, he was prepared with years of retail experience and the knowledge that comes with a degree in Civil Engineering and a masters in Computational intelligence.

Jonathan has been racing radio-controlled models since the age of 4 and by the age of 8, he was British Junior Champion. Throughout the years he has been racing, he has held 3 world championship titles and 2 world speed records for hie bespoke built RC models. The majority of competitions he has won, he has used his prized possession, the 6.5ft in length boat which he nicknames ‘My Baby’.

‘I could tell you story after story’ Said Jonathan ‘the races I’ve done with that boat and the party tricks I could do, that was my absolute baby.’

One story that plays with his heartstrings was from a 24-hour powerboat race in France. Now, normally you would have a group of 8-10 people all taking it in turns to do an hour of driving each. Jonathan had a team of 4 and he had just finished driving for three hours. ‘Everybody says you can never have a bond with an inanimate object.’ Said Jonathan. But at 12:30 am, in the middle of the night, Jonathan woke up and said ‘There is something wrong with my boat’.

Nobody had called him to say what was wrong. He climbed out of his tent, and there stood in front of him were his teammates stating there was something wrong with the boat. They handed him the boat and he knew exactly what to fix without anybody telling him anything, he managed to fix the boat by what he saw in the dream.

‘The boat called me, said Jonathan ‘told me what was wrong and what needed fixing, and still to this day, I get emotional about it.’

Unfortunately, 3 ½ years ago Jonathan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease which can affect his racing abilities. This was first discovered when he was racing using a radio controller, he realised he couldn’t make the corners quick enough as his thumb movement was far too slow and numerous tests later, he was given the diagnoses.

‘Once I received the diagnoses’ said Jonathan ‘I knew what was wrong with me which made me feel better as I could now get on with my life”.

Jonathan is currently designing a new spatialised controller for himself so he can continue doing what he loves and start racing again. This new controller will have metal bars under his legs to support his weight whilst using the foot pedals along with a steering wheel attached to his waist. The idea is

there, however, the time and money are few and far between.

Jonathan has so many new and innovative ideas that have come as a result from his Parkinson’s diagnoses.

This disease would also bring physical fatigue so he would sit down in the evening after work and would be exhausted, however, his brain would still very active so he’d spends hours at night researching and designing so that when he does have the energy, time and money, he can go about manufacturing these ideas.

To Jonathan, Nimrif RC is so much more than just a retail job. His passion for racing and designing drives this business and his knowledge and experience is what keeps the customers coming back, time and time again.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY Saturday 10th October

On the 10th October every year, we recognise World Mental Heath Day. Find out more about mental health and how to make a difference on this years World Mental Health Day.

ental health has been a common subject for a lot of us during the recent pandemic.

It has been a part of so many of our lives due to the strange circumstances and the changes we have had to make to our daily routines. People are often unaware of what mental health is or are unsure of how to help someone who is suffering with their mental wellbeing. There is also a stigma attached to mental health problems therefore people feel less comfortable to talk about their problems.

If you are in good mental health, you will make the most of your potential, cope with life and play a full part in your family, workplace, community and among friends. Having a mental health problem can drastically vary from person to person, and people deal with this in many different ways. Whether its anxiety, fear, stress or feeling lonely, sad or depressed, any ongoing negative feeling means there is an issue with your mental health and the quicker this is dealt with, the quicker things will start turn around.

or a small act of kindness can actually have a positive affect on you. Offering this will give you a sense of self-worth by creating positive feelings within yourself and others.

Mindfulness is a term that is used a lot and is all about being in the present moment. Taking up mindfulness activities such as Yoga, meditation, a peaceful hobby or even video games can focus the mind on what is happening at that moment. Whether its breathing, dancing or colouring within the lines, these simple activities that you probably do everyday will help to improve your thoughts and feelings as you soak in the world around you.

Raising awareness is the next step and there are plenty of events or things you can do to get involved and help to spread awareness.

Tea & Talk is a lovely little way to get together with friends and family, eat cake, put the kettle on whilst raising funds for the cause. This also a great way to talk about what might be troubling you.

Looking after your mental health is just as important as your physical health and there are many different ways you can help your mental wellbeing.

Firstly, connect with other people, it is vital you keep in contact with friends, relatives and partners so that they can supply you with the help you need. Talking to someone can also be just what is needed when something is plaguing you.

Taking care of your physical health also helps take care of your mental health by raising your self-esteem and distracting your brain into something active. It also causes a chemical change in your brain which can help to positively change your mood. Learning a new skill or hobby is also a great way of taking your mind off something. It also helps to build you a sense of purpose whilst boosting your self-confidence.

The little shop with a big impact on the local community: We interviewed Carole and Graham Stock, founders of blame LILY to find out more about this little gem located on The Broadway, Plymstock.

As soon as the Stock family opened their doors on the 7th September 2019, in popped a very excited customer who followed up with the words ‘This is exactly what the Broadway needs!’

And it has been the same ever since.

B

oth Graham and Carole have always been in the jewellery business and have been designing jewellery for 30 years. Graham has worked in the fashion and jewellery industries most of his working life.

The two met in London and owned a retail shop when they were only in their twenties. Carole concentrated on the design and the buying whereas Graham focused on the selling and the retail. A perfect team you could say!

Graham also works as an independent consultant for various jewellery brands which means he travels to places such as China, Hong Kong, Canada and Thailand. He also works as a guest presenter on the QVC Shopping Channel.

The family moved down to Plymstock 15 years ago from London as they both always wanted to live by the sea. Once settled, they both realised that something was missing - those independent boutique shops that you would typically find in places like Salcombe, St Ives and Marbella. They felt that it was their calling to bring a bit of glamour into Plymouth.

Carole and Graham Family owners from left to right created their own Lily, Carole & Graham jewellery brand 10 years ago because of their love for jewellery design and named it Lily & Lotty - Lily being their youngest daughter and Lotty being their middle daughter (their eldest daughter Chloe runs a successful yoga studio in Cornwall). This brand is still stocked in jewellers up and down the country and of course is available in blame LILY. Living in Plymstock, the couple watched the old HSBC bank being converted into two smaller shops.

One day on a visit to the Broadway, Carole decided to make an unplanned enquiry as to what the rent would be for a small shop. This seed then grew into a vision of both Carole and Graham owning a small Boutique shop in Plymouth, and both being quite ‘gungho’, they just said, ‘Let’s do it!’ Just 6 months after enquiring about the rent, the family opened blame LILY to the public.

The shop’s distinctive name is due to the couple’s youngest daughter Lily, a quirky, theatrical and fun-loving girl who helps out at the shop in between her studies as a fashion student in Plymouth.

Before opening, the couple worked tirelessly to make their shop look fabulous. The floors were handpainted and stencilled by Graham and Carole and they sourced second hand and antique furniture which they updated or painted it themselves, adding unusual props and displays as well as great lighting.

The shop exterior is adorned by a gorgeous flower arch which changes at Christmas time with fairy lights and winter flowers. When walking into blame LILY, you can appreciate the love, care and attention to detail the family have put into the store. The stock is always beautifully displayed - ‘It might be like an Aladdin’s

You really do experience all of the senses when walking around the boutique. The incense sticks are constantly on, they have a great music playlist and they sometimes pop open the prosecco on a Saturday afternoon!

Predominantly aimed at a female market, they sell clothing, a large selection of Sterling Silver and fashion jewellery, watches, gifts, handbags, accessories and homewares. Their products are constantly changing with the seasons and Carole works hard to source the right products at the right price.

‘That is a skill in itself! It’s a 7-day-a-week job’ Said Graham. blame LILY are also the only stockist in Plymouth of Katie Loxton bags, candles and accessories; Powder Designs socks and scarves; Joma Jewellery and Ted Baker gifts. They also stock a huge range of Bessie handbags and purses.

There is also a small men’s section with a choice of watches, wallets, socks, belts, leather bracelets and stainless-steel jewellery – popular for men’s gift ideas.

The small team of 7 all share something special in common and it is the ability to make the customers happy. The retail staff like to go above and beyond to ensure their customers have a wonderful shopping experience and leave with a smile on their face. All purchases are beautifully wrapped in tissue paper, and then placed into a blame LILY branded bag, fully complimentary. They want their customers to feel special and well looked-after.

Their Facebook page is worth following as they are

always posting about new products or doing videos of fashion shows with their staff who love to model.

This is a great way to keep up to date with special offers and new stock arriving.

They are even thinking of planning their very own fashion show, here on the Broadway!

Carole mainly focuses on the buying and sourcing of products and Graham primarily does the retail and selling with his skill of displaying products to attract customers. In 5 years time, they would love to move to a slightly larger shop on the Broadway to enable them to stock an even wider range of products. blame LILY has proved to us, and I’m sure it will to you, that they are no ordinary clothing and jewellery shop. They are a community of friendly, helpful and caring people who put the customer’s satisfaction above anything else. Their stock is like nothing else in Plymouth, it is affordable, unique and you really will find something different. Support your local business, come on in and have a browse. STOPTOBER IS BACK! REDUCE THE RISK OF COVID-19 AND QUIT SMOKING THIS OCTOBER!

I

t is scientifically proven that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to quit for good. Stoptober is similar to October, just without the cigarettes. With the growing concerns of Covid-19 cases relating to smokers, now is the time to stop for good. If you’ve tried quitting before but found it difficult, try again this month and you’ll be joining thousands of others as you collectively kick the habit.

The addiction lies with nicotine, but just the act of smoking can be addictive. For example, you might always light up during your lunch break, or when you get home from work. Perhaps you always have a cigarette with a cup of tea, and when you crave one you find yourself wondering what to do with your hands.

The current pandemic is a stressful time for the majority of us, but for a smoker, there is a toxic circle developing. Some see smoking as a stress-reliever however, smoking is proven to increase your chance of suffering a bad case of Covid-19.

Did you know, just 24 hours after having your last cigarette your lungs will already be working to clean out the debris left behind by tobacco smoke. After 48 hours you’ll notice that you can smell and taste better, and after 72 hours your energy levels will be on the rise. It really doesn’t take long to notice the difference. Experience this for yourself this October!

As the weeks, months and years pass smoke-free, your circulation will improve, your lung function will increase and you’ll massively reduce your risk of a heart attack and lung cancer.

The withdrawal symptoms often put smokers off quitting. You may feel irritable, have an increased appetite and struggle to concentrate. Keep in mind that all of this is temporary, and that the benefits of quitting far outweigh the difficult withdrawal process.

Don’t go ‘cold turkey’ if the thought scares you. There’s plenty of support available online, from your doctor and at your local pharmacy. Anyone you speak to will be pleased to hear that you’re trying to give up cigarettes.

Try e-cigarettes and ‘vape’, gum or patches and see which works best for you.

There are many campaigns online and apps that will help you through it. SmokeFree is a free app available to download on IPhone and Android. This app helps you to see how much money you have saved, how your health has improved and also gives you daily activities to do if you are craving a cigarette.

Smoking harms your lungs meaning you are more susceptible to respiratory diseases including Covid-19.

Not only does quitting improve your health instantly, it’s also good for your wallet. A person who smokes 20 cigarettes a-day will save around £275 a month, which is over £3,000 a year. If money is the primary reason pushing you to quit, then use the old, triedand-tested method of put-ting the money you’ve saved into a jar each week. You’ll soon have saved up enough for a holiday or a nice treat for you and the family.

Do it together! Find someone, a friend, work colleague or loved one and help motivate each other to stop smoking.

Plymouth’s ‘well-kept secret’. Established over 250 years ago, Woollcombe Yonge is one of the oldest law firms in the West Country.

With fully qualified, specialist staff, they are also the only high street practice in Plymouth with a Criminal Law team. We interviewed Tracey Wright, the partner in charge of Woollcombe Yonge’s Private Client Team, to find out more about one of the oldest law firms in the South West.

I

n 2007, Woollcombe Yonge moved from their office on North Hill to their current location towards The Barbican on Bretonside. The business originated from two Oxford University law students who, on realising they were both from Devon, resolved to set up their own law firm on completion of their studies.

The firm was based in the South Hams where most clients were from the rural and agricultural sectors and they still act for a lot of these types of client today. The firm had been doing some criminal law work but it was not until the 1980s when John Haythorn and Sandy Morrison expanded the Criminal law team into what it is today. Their assistant at the time was a young Tracey Baker who rose through the ranks and has been the managing partner of the firm for the last 14 years.

Tracey Wright specialises in Wills, Trusts and Probate, which is otherwise known as Private Client.

Woollcombe Yonge opened their arms to Tracey 3 years ago, where she was very grateful for a change of pace and operating from one location. Before this, Tracey felt stretched working in two different offices either end of Cornwall and travelling from Devon.

‘I felt I was falling short as a mother, as a wife, as a daughter and as a friend. I needed to simplify my life’.

With 20 years of experience under her belt, Tracey made the move to Woollcombe Yonge. In addition to the work you might expect Tracey to do, she has a particular set of clients who lack the mental capacity to look after their finances, such as people who have suffered brain injuries, who have autism, other mental health issues and learning difficulties. At a young age, Tracey was inspired by the work her mother did as a Registered Mental Health Nurse, she then

studied Psychology at A-Level and whilst studying at university worked as a nursing assistant in a number of psychiatric hospitals. She is now proud to have the ability to help vulnerable people within her job role.

Woollcombe Yonge consists of 6 sectors; Wills & Probate, Residential Conveyancing, Criminal, Divorce, Children Proceedings and Business Services. The Business Services team assist business owners with all things company and commercial and even incorporates Dispute Resolution. Each of these departments has fully qualified and experienced staff available to deal with any kind of issue or query.

Will Giles is head of the Family Law team which deals with both Divorce and Children Proceedings.

Will and Tracey had worked together for 16 years at a previous firm. Will is also trained as a Mediator for Family Mediation which is something the Courts now encourage when couples are looking to divorce.

Ian Veater joined the team in 2018 having worked with both Tracey and Will previously and hearing the great feedback. Ian is a partner and head of the Business Services team. He also specialises in dispute resolution and has a keen eye for a great deal.

The current pandemic has meant that their busiest sector at this moment in time is Residential Conveyancing headed up by Joe Cunningham, another who has risen through the ranks from trainee to partner. This is due to several changes, for example, the cut on stamp duty, a moratorium effectively on house sales, low-interest rates and a desire for many to move down to the South West for a healthier way of life, and because working from home means that geography is no longer an issue.

Other changes from the pandemic have meant that there is a limited number of people working in the office at any one time. This has meant the team alternating between working from home and in the office. Unlike some law firms, Woollcombe Yonge is still offering face-to-face appointments and home visits, however, a phone call or video call is encouraged.

From the outside, Woollcombe Yonge could be seen to be ‘punching above their weight’ when it comes to the clients they work with. However, this is not the case, although they are a small team in a small office, they have qualified experts available to advise in each of their sectors. They are assisted by a small number of legal assistants to ensure that work can be done at the right level but they do no rely on an army of non-qualified staff with a ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ ethos. This and their considerable criminal law team are what sets them apart, and in some ways ahead of other larger law firms in the area.

Tracey believes that the most important quality to have as a solicitor is the ability to listen to clients. Often, clients do not know what is relevant. The skill comes in the lawyer being able put the client at ease and to ask the right question to get to the crux of the issue.

Tracey and all of the team at Woollcombe Yonge make sure that before anything else, the clients are relaxed and comfortable. They would like everyone to know that they are only human; they have whiny children, mortgages to pay off, and are worried about Covid-19 too so they are no different to anyone else.

Tracey spoke in the interview about one of the best bits of feedback she regularly gets, particularly in the context of making a will; ‘Oh, well that was easy!’

She hopes that when people realise how straightforward the process can be, they will be more likely to come back again when anything needs changing as it remains the case, even in the full flow of the pandemic, that 3 out of 4 people have not made a will. Woollcombe Yonge likes to give back to the community wherever they can. Their ‘Charity of the Year’ this year is Dame Hannah Rogers Trust but they sadly haven’t been able to do as much as they would have liked with them due to Covid-19. However, normally they would all take part in large fundraising events throughout the year such as the Mighty Hike, where they hiked for 26 miles along the South West Coast Path to raise money for MacMillan last year.

Some team members did a fire walk and they even sponsored the Hugs from Henry Strictly ball which saw Tracey take on the role of head judge and Leonie Rowe, from the Residential Conveyancing team, participate as one of the dancers.

Although they are an old company, their ethos is far from dated. They work from modern offices and embrace new technology to ensure that clients can still have access to good legal advice even during a pandemic.

Woollcombe Yonge has been running for 250 years, and the pandemic didn’t stop them. Working from home was their new normal as they carried on supporting their clients and doing what they do best.

The company have been through the Spanish Flu as well as two World Wars. Even being bombed out of their office in the war did not stop them and they are not stopping now.

DAY OF THE DEAD Learn all about the two-day celebration that is often overlooked as ‘Mexican’s version of Halloween’.

U

sually mistaken for Halloween, Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration held over two days; November 1st - November 2nd, the same days as All Saints Day and All Souls Day in Christianity. Although the symbolism of skulls relates well to Halloween, the two-day celebration is a time for remembering and celebrating the life of loved ones who have passed. However, many people do dress up in Day of the Dead costumes for Halloween. ‘Dia de la Muertos’ or otherwise known as, ‘Day of the Dead’, is traditionally full of colour, music, food and festivities.

The Day of the Dead originated from when the Spanish came to Mexico and with them, they introduced Catholicism. The roots of the Day of the Dead go back around 3,000 years whereby preColumbian Mesoamerica honoured the dead by performing rituals and the Aztecs saw death as an ever-present part of life. The Spanish would bring wine and ‘spirit bread’ to their loved one’s graves.

They then blended their beliefs and traditions to create their own customs. They all considered that mourning the dead was considered disrespectful so therefore turned it into a yearly celebration. To this day, Mexican’s from all religions come together to celebrate the indigenous life.

In 2008, it was officially classed as a ‘National Holiday’ thanks to the dedication from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). They began to understand it as a means to face death and the deceased and not just a fancydress street party.

where the children come back from the Land of the Dead and then on the night of November 1st, it’s the adults turn. The deceased are welcomed home to an altar of all their favourite things and photographs, and are treated like honoured guests. There are no tears or mourning allowed on these days, only celebrations, singing and laughter!

It is on the afternoon of November 2nd when the fun festivities begin! Families play games, dance while the band plays outside, they laugh, sing and dance into the night. It is believed that on the November 1st and November 2nd, the passageway from the spirit world to the real world is opened, and therefore our deceased loved ones can return for a day full of celebration with their families.

To help bring their loved ones back from the dead, they would arrange a variety of ofrendas, meaning offerings around an altar to the dead such as; photographs, other personal belongings, candles, food and lots of flowers, traditionally marigolds. This is the central piece to the ceremony which is typically built into private homes.

The symbolism of the skulls is far from grim. La Catrina is the iconic symbol of the Day of the Dead.

no matter what you look like or the colour of your skin, we will all look like skeletons in the end. Many visitors purchase small statues dressed like skeletons with flowers and feathers on their hats and bring them home as souvenirs from Mexico.

The film’s that you may have seen feature Day of the Dead references include, the opening sequence of Spectre, the 2015 James Bond film. As well as the Disney Pixar movie, Coco, which heavily follows the traditions of the Day of the Dead.

Traditionally you would expect to paint your face like a skeleton and then they would decorate it with glitter, beads, flowers and have huge smiles. They would also wear fancy suits and dresses, occasionally with noise-making items to, so-say, keep the dead close during the fun. In towns and cities across Mexico, people would wear these costumes and makeup and hold parades and parties, and sing and dance! They would spill out onto the streets bringing with them the joy and laughter.

Unfortunately, we are unable to visit Mexico at this current period, therefore, witnessing this wonderful celebration for yourselves will have to be on hold for another year or so. However, you can still celebrate the Day of the Dead in the comfort of your own home with music, traditional food, costumes, makeup and lots of your family members! Lots of people dress up in Day of the Dead costumes on Halloween which is a great idea. However, it is always a good idea to understand the history of the celebration and the outfit before dressing up.

Traditional Day of the Dead food is eaten at this celebration as well, such as el Pan de Muerto, meaning the Bread of the Dead. This is a sweet bread decorated with either a skull or crossbones. Families will usually bake one themselves for the occasion and most of the traditional foods are homemade. Other food and drink are made such as marigold tortillas and marigold tequila. Marigolds are a traditional flower in the Day of the Dead as they are thought to guide the spirits back with their intense colour and smell. Marigolds are widely used in the celebration for example, to decorate altars, hats, clothing as well as in recipes.

Celebrating the Day of the Dead authentically is a lovely way to bring the family back together after the unusual year we have had so far. Especially if you may have lost someone during the pandemic, adopting this celebration may be just what is needed.

With laughter, dancing, singing, reminiscing on good memories and eating traditional Day of the Dead foods, this is a celebration of their life with no tears to dampen spirits.

Sugar skulls are also made and decorated similarly to the face paint and make-up applied to the face.

They are pressed into skull-shaped moulds and then decorated with edible sugar paste, paint and beads and their loved one’s name. This is then taken to the grave on the last day of the holiday, November 2nd.

Decorations include papel picado, a traditional paper garland used to decorate homes and altars. Papel picado means ‘Punched’ or ‘perforated’ paper and is usually displayed in a range of bright colours and patterns.

NATIONAL CHOLESTEROL MONTH Help raise awareness about high cholesterol levels this October and learn more about cholesterol with HEART UK.

E

very year in October, efforts are made to raise awareness about the effects of high cholesterol. HEART UK holds events and talks to raise awareness and fundraise towards vital support.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is actually needed in our bodies to stay healthy, but it is when the levels get too high, it becomes a problem. Cholesterol is a type of blood fat which plays a vital role in making all of our cells work how they should. It also makes hormones which keeps your bones strong and it is needed for digestion to make Vitamin D. Did you know?

High cholesterol can be inherited and it can also affect people who are slim and otherwise healthy. So, it is very important to get a test as there is no other way of knowing your levels.

HEART UK HEART UK is an active organisation who are centred around raising awareness about cholesterol. This year they are running a ‘Let’s Talk About Cholesterol’ campaign to help promote the importance of knowing your cholesterol levels.

They are also running ‘The Great Cholesterol Challenge’ to help fundraise. Being active is a major part of looking after your cholesterol levels, keeping your heart healthy and helping to prevent heart disease. This challenge involves walking, running, swimming or cycling 100 miles in October.

soon, then there are other ways to raise awareness and fundraise, for example, holding a ‘National Cholesterol Month’ stand at work or hosting a healthy bake sale.

By making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can instantly help keep your cholesterol levels at a healthy rate. Eating healthier, avoid smoking, cutting down on alcohol and adding more exercise into your daily routine will help make a big difference.

You can get a cholesterol test on the NHS by contacting your local GP. They will typically recommend you get a test if you are over the age of 40, overweight or if high cholesterol runs in your family.

There are two ways they are able to check your cholesterol levels. Either with a blood test which will give you results within a few days or with a finger-prick test which gives results within a few minutes.

There are many changes to your lifestyle that your doctor can prescribe if your levels are particularly high, which can all vary based on your current lifestyle and diet.

Due to Covid-19, some patients are worried about entering doctor’s surgeries with the risk of getting infected. Surgeries and hospitals are very safe places as they maintain excellent hygiene both personal and throughout the building. You are advised not to wait until Covid-19 cases have decreased as that may be a long time and your levels may get worse.

THE COURT OF PROTECTION & DEPUTYSHIPS

T

he Court of Protection is responsible for overseeing the management and administration of the financial affairs, property, health and welfare of individuals who were unable to manage their own affairs due to a lack of mental capacity. If you know of an individual who no longer appears to have the necessary mental capacity to manage their own finances, property or health and welfare and they do not have a Power of Attorney in place then the time may have come to make an application to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a Deputy to look after their financial affairs, property, health and welfare. It may be that the individual concerned has been diagnosed with alzheimer’s, dementia or perhaps has suffered a brain injury which has affected their mental capacity.

An application can be made by an individual or by two or more persons or it can be made by a professional such as a Solicitor. There may be occasions where the Court of Protection decides that a professional should be appointed such as where there is a dispute over who should appointed or the financial affairs are complicated.

In situations where a professional Deputy is required, we have Katherine Millman, who is an experienced Deputy and would be willing to act. An application can take 6 months to a year before a Deputy is appointed and a vast amount of information has to be gathered at the offset and provided to the Court of Protection to aid

them in their decision making process. This will include obtaining an assessment of the individual’s mental capacity to manage their affairs. The Court of Protection may decide that they need further information and they may request a Court Hearing for all parties to attend.

Unfortunately, it is a time consuming procedure and once appointed, the Deputy will need to liaise with all asset holders and creditors. An insurance bond will also need to be taken out and annual accounts submitted to the Court of Protection to account for every penny that is under the control of the Deputy. The Court of Protection will expect the Deputy to check that the individual is receiving the correct benefits and they will want to know of any significant decisions the Deputy has made and who the Deputy consulted in making those decisions, such as a Social Worker, accountant, solicitor, family etc.

Recipe ideas

Halloween is looming so why not try some of our spooky recipes! We have also picked some of our favorite in-season recipes to warm you up in the colder months.

Moroccan baked eggs

(Serves 2)

½ tbsp olive oil, ½ onion, chopped, 1 garlic clove, sliced, ½ tsp ras-el-hanout, pinch ground cinnamon, ½ tsp ground coriander, 400g/14oz cherry tomatoes, chopped, 2 tbsp chopped coriander, 2 free-range eggs, salt and freshly ground black pepper ONE Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7.

TWO Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and garlic and cook for 6-7 minutes, or until soft. Stir in the spices and cook, stirring, for a further minute.

THREE Add the tomatoes and season well with salt and pepper, then simmer gently for 8-10 minutes.

FOUR Scatter over 1 tablespoon of the coriander, then divide the tomato mixture between 2 individual ovenproof dishes. Break an egg into each dish.

FIVE Bake for 8-10 minutes until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still slightly runny. Cook for a further 2-3 minutes if you prefer the eggs to be cooked through.

SIX Scatter over the remaining coriander and serve.

Pumpkin Soup ((Serves 6-8) 1 large onion, chopped, 2 carrots, peeled and chopped, 2 garlic cloves, 1 bay leaf, 25g/1oz unsalted butter, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 medium pumpkin (prepared weight about, 850g/1lb 14oz) deseeded and roughly chopped, 1 mediumsized floury potato, such as Maris Piper, roughly chopped, 1 litre/1¾ pint vegetable or chicken stock, a little extra may be needed, 100ml/3½fl oz double cream, 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds, salt and freshly ground black pepper ONE Put the onion, carrots, garlic bay leaf, butter and half the olive oil into a large pan. Cook over a low–medium heat for about 10 minutes until the vegetables are tender but not coloured.

TWO Add the squash and potato, mix to combine and cook for a further 2–3 minutes. Pour in the stock, season well and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, half cover the pan with a lid and continue to cook for about 40 minutes until the squash is really tender when tested with the point of a knife.

THREE Pick out the bay leaf and blend the soup until smooth using a stick blender.

FOUR Add the cream and a little more stock if the soup is on the thick side, taste for seasoning, adding more salt and pepper as required.

FIVE Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and add the pumpkin seeds and fry quickly until the seeds start to pop. Remove from the pan.

SIX Ladle the soup into bowls and serve with a swirl of cream and the toasted pumpkin seeds.
