KF Kitchens’

latest design earns a ‘chef’s kiss’ from happy customer!

With decades of experience in the catering industry between them, Plymouth couple Nick and Tina Garcia know a thing or two about what makes a great kitchen.

Nick was patron chef at the family’s much-loved restaurant, Trattoria Pescatore in Stonehouse, while Tina runs local seafood company, S&J Fisheries. Both are self-confessed foodies who love to entertain for family and friends. So when it came to looking for a new kitchen for their home on the outskirts of Plymouth, it not only had to be a stunning modern space for the family to enjoy, it also had to offer everything a busy kitchen needs – and in all the right places.

After visiting a number of kitchen companies, they chose Plymouth family firm KF Kitchens to design and fit their kitchen, which was completed just in time for Christmas: “We haven’t left it since, we don’t sit anywhere else!” said Tina. “It’s perfect for how we like to live. It’s sociable rather than formal, with the stools at the breakfast bar. When we sit here in the evening, it feels special, like we’re out to dinner. And our 15-year-old twin boys love it, too.”

The kitchen is at one end of a big sunny room, which has a lounge area at the other end. When Nick and Tina first went to KF Kitchens, the room hadn’t even been built: “It used to be two linked conservatories which had to go,” explained Nick. “So we had them knocked down and had this

room built. We wanted this to be our main living area because it’s so light. Our old kitchen, which we’ll now be redeveloping, is much smaller and doesn’t get as much light on the other side of the house.”

Having created the new space, they then needed to find their dream kitchen to put in it. Their search proved successful when they met KF Kitchens’ experienced designers Nathan and Derinda Damarell and their son Connor in the showroom at Faraday Mill. Tina said: “We really liked them, they brought lots of ideas to the table. We went through various options and the design evolved over time – Nathan said it was about building the layers. It’s a process, so you don’t have to make all the decisions at the start. Nothing was rushed. And there was no beating about the bush with the costing, so there were no hidden costs.”

Aesthetically, the couple wanted a contemporary look. Practically, they wanted a lay-out that was efficient and had appliances that would serve them for many years to come.

“We were open to ideas,” said Tina. “When we looked around the showroom we saw this kitchen, but in a different colour and we really liked it. In the end, we went for this colour, lava, because it’s so timeless.”

The kitchen is by German firm Nolte and features antifingerprint doors. It also has the new range of Artwood striped cupboards in coffee colour above the sink area. The island has an additional table area attached, with a work surface that brings the contrast that Tina was ooking for. This, together with the other worktops and splashbacks, was supplied by Plymouth company, Mayflower Stone: “I wanted a contrast to go with the overhead lights I’d bought, and Nathan sourced this worktop with copper tones from Mayflower. And it’s perfect,” said Tina.

The kitchen delivers on all the couple’s “must haves” ample storage space, a multi zone induction hob with retracting island extractor, a Quooker tap with instant boiling water, cold water, and fizzy water, and quality, concealed NEFF appliances. These include a freezer at the end of the island, fridge, microwave combi-oven, main oven, coffee machine, and a warming drawer. They also opted for a steam oven. Tina said: “We’d never used one before, but Derinda suggested that we might benefit from having one and she was right, we love it.”

The design ensures that the sink, concealed bins and dishwasher are all in the same area, while the hob on the island means that the chef is always at the heart of the social hub. KF Kitchens supplied and installed the kitchen and all appliances and did the flooring for the whole room: “Nathan and Derinda helped us with where everything should go,” said Tina, “and the actual installation by their fitter, Kevin, went like clockwork.”

KF Kitchens worked closely with the couple’s own tradesmen, RGS Electrical and Maxim Plumbing, to ensure everything went smoothly. “The kitchen is exactly what we wanted,”said Tina.

“Our three words for it are ‘sleek, modern and enjoyable’ –or our ‘new happy haven’. We can’t recommend KF Kitchens enough!”

A AN ECO-FRIENDLY SPRING CLEAN

Top tips for thinking about the planet whilst having a spring clean.

spring clean is like putting on fresh clean bedsheets in every crevice and item in your home. It’s extremely satisfying for your mind and your home but less so for the planet.

most cleaning products contain nasty chemicals and are usually stored within non-recyclable plastic bottles. antibacterial wipes are not biodegradable or flushable (though some claim to be), resulting in blocked drains or ending up in landfill. And a year’s worth (or more) of personal items get sorted out into piles and head for the tip. if only there was a way we could all experience the satisfaction of a spring clean without the harmful effects on the planet…

Well, you’re in luck. We have found lots of hacks, eco-friendly inventions and tips to get the job done with the same amount of satisfaction.

CLEANINg PRODuCts

you may think you need a different cleaning product for every different surface in your house however, constantly buying plastic bottles is not good for the planet and it also adds unnecessary clutter. Stick to one multisurface cleaner and cloth for the whole house and only buy purpose-made products when you need them.

Even better still, you can purchase reusable glass bottles to avoid plastic and opt for products such as multi-

purpose refill sachets by Ocean Saver or concentrated disinfectants such as Zoflora which you only need to use a small amount at one time. once you have used up all of your other cleaning products and correctly recycled the bottles, you will have a clean and tidy cupboard under the sink.

RECYCLE

clothes and shoes can be recycled by various retailer-run recycling programmes or at your clothes and shoes’ local recycling bin. Broken items of furniture or damaged electrical appliances can be taken to your local recycling centre. if you are unsure where your local recycling centre or bin is, head to www. recyclenow.com, where they have a useful search tool to find out what types of items you can recycle and where.

Before throwing anything out, ask yourself if you could make anything new from the item. upcycling is a great way to turn unwanted items into something tailored to your style. Whether that be a dress that you’d like to sew into a top or a cupboard that needs some updating. this is not only an eco-friendly way of adding new life to old items, but it can also be a lot of fun and you can learn a new skill along the way.

If you are unsure about upcycling,

there are plenty of inspirational and educational videos on home DIYs on YouTube to avoid any mistakes.

gIvE AwAY

Anything that you don’t use that isn’t faulty or too damaged can go in this pile. When making this pile, think about who you want to give or sell it to.

charity shops are always after new clothes to sell and they will happily take your unwanted belongings. you can take your clothes to your local charity shop or a charity shop in particular that you’d like to support once they are open on the 12th of April. You can also deliver your items to a charity of your choice with free postage.

Somebody in your family or a close friend might take it off your hands and put it to good use, it’s always worth asking them.

If it is in good condition, you could sell it on various second-hand shopping sites such as; eBay, Vinted, Depop, gumtree or Shpock. make sure the images are clear, and the description is honest and don’t forget about the postage and packaging costs.

I hope these tips have given you some inspiration for your next ecofriendly spring clean and may even work their way into your weekly clean.

NaTiONal peT mONTH

4 weeks of non-stop pet appreciation! april is national pet month which means 30 days spent spoiling our furry or scaley friends

It has been proven that pets relieve stress in work environments therefore we thought we’d find out the benefits of working with your furry or scaley friends. It turns out, there are a lot more positive impacts that they can have on your own health as well as their own wellbeing.

i don’t know about you but as soon as i catch a glimpse of an animal, i immediately have the biggest smile on my face. not only do they always look so adorably innocent but all they want in life is to love and to be loved and that is very wholesome. they honestly don’t care about your looming deadlines or workload, what they do care about is your happiness and the time you spend with them instead of

Pets are completely selfless (though some cat owners may disagree) and that selfless energy is radiated throughout the workplace. Research has proven that pets can lower blood pressure, reduce stress/anxiety, prevent loneliness and uplift your mood.

Dogs, in particular, force you to get outside during your workday as they need to be walked or let out for the toilet. taking time away from your computer and heading outdoors is going to have a huge positive impact on your mental health and stress levels. it allows you time to clear your head, prioritise things and live in the present moment rather than constantly thinking about that deadline in 2 weeks’ time.

It’s hard to think creatively when stuck in an office all day. Walking also increases creativity, perhaps you could take your meetings with you on a dog walk to enhance new ideas.

pets can be very funny beings to watch and engage with. Whether they are running around in circles with a toy or slyly about to push something off of a shelf, pets always find a way to make us laugh whilst also creating a little bit of mischief.

they can also boost attendance as you won’t need to rush home to look after them. Whether they’re a new pet or they suffer from a bit of separation anxiety, having them with you at work will also prevent any worries as you can always keep an eye on them.

When we think of bringing pets to work, we usually think of our furry four-legged friends, however, there are also health benefits to keeping fish in nerve-racking environments to calm people down. Fish tanks in waiting rooms are very popular as it acts as an escapism from the world you are in as you focus on the fish swimming around their home. the sound of the water is also proven to reduce stress and contributes to the act of mindfulness.

PLASTIC POLLUTION:

HOW WE’RE SLOWLY KILLING OUR PLANET

Plastic pollution, the accumulation in the environment of man-made plastic products to the point where they create problems for wildlife and their habitats as well as for human population.

All this plastic waste is very harmful. In 1950, the world’s population of 2.5 billion produced 1.5 million tons of plastic. In 2016, a global population of more than 7 billion people produced over 320 million tons of plastic. This is set to double by 2034.

Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world, from busy tourist beaches to uninhabited, tropical islands, there’s nowhere in the world that is safe from it.

what is plastic pollution?

As said before, plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment. It very negatively impacts wildlife, their habitats and humans.

Plastics that act as pollutants are categorised into mirco-, meso-, or macros debris, based on size. Plastics are inexpensive and durable, and as a result, levels of plastic production by humans are high.

Although there is plastic pollution on land, most of the waste ends up in the sea, which even brings the plastic waste to places where there are no human inhabitants.

Of the 260 million tons of plastic the world produces each year, about 10 percent ends up in the Ocean, according to a Greenpeace report (Plastic Debris in the World’s Oceans, 2006). Seventy percent of the mass eventually sinks, damaging life on the seabed. The rest floats in open seas.

Unfortunately, plastic is forever and we do not recycle and reuse what we have, we just throw it away; and it will never degrade and go back to nature. After 700 years it will start photo-degrading, turning into little bits of itself, ready to pollute the environment again.

what effect will this have?

In short, it’s damaging our environment and the effects are long-lasting. It effects us, the wildlife and it does this in ways that you may not have been aware of.

Pollution in the ocean is mainly from plastic and it has an awful impact on marine species. Plastic can hurt tiny organisms like plankton, which larger animals rely on for food. If small

organisms are poisoned from injesting plastic, then the animals that eat them will also consume toxins. The toxins will work their way up the food chain and can even be present in the fish that you eat.

Water sources everywhere are in danger because of plastic pollution; many regions are already facing issues with this.

Plastic toxins in dumps from litter can seep into the groundwater, which people drink everyday, this will become even more of an issue as the world’s population continues to increase.

As our planet’s population continues to expand, land will become more valuable, meaning it will be more difficult to find places to put rubbish. This means that over time that these landfills and dumps will take up even more lands, which will invade animals’ habitats and come even closer to groundwater sources.

It costs millions every year to cleanup areas exposed to plastic toxins.

When plastic is burned in the open air, it releases large amounts of toxins which pollutes the air. If the toxins are inhaled over a long period of time, it can lead to respiratory problems. Many regions that have been impacted by pollution toxins have seen a decrease in tourism, this will therefore have an impact on their economy.

Plastic pollution has a terrible impact on everything and is one of the biggest environmental concerns. The amount of garbage increases as the population grows and therefore the accumulation of plastic waste grows. There are ways to reduce the impact of plastic pollution and just being aware of the dangers surrounding it is the first step.

how can i help?

There are many ways that you can help with plastic pollution. Even if that means starting small. The UK is already starting to make changes now that the government is currently planning to ban plastic straws, cotton-buds and stirrers - this is stated to be enforced some time between October 2019 and October 2020.

Plastic pollution has a big impact on the environment, but plastic waste isn’t unavoidable. Every time you make the choice to avoid or recycle plastic products, you lower the risk of environmental damage.

Make a concious choice to reuse things: bring your own reusable shopping bags to the supermarkets and avoid using single-use plastic bags; bring your own reusable coffee cup when going out to get hot drinks; same goes for water bottles,

buy a reusable one instead of buying plastic bottles - this will definitely all be cheaper in the long-run!

Reduce your plastic usage as much as you possibly can: switch your plastic food containers for glass ones, buy household products (such as detergent) in cardboard boxes rather than plastic boxes/bottles. Be more aware of where you’re using plastic unecessarily and recycle everything you can, even small changes in your day-to-day life can reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment.

If you really want to get involved and help reduce plastic waste in the environment, why not join in and help out on a beach clean? Being close the seaside here in Plymouth, there will be plenty of places where you can help make a difference.

Turn the Tide is aiming for a national clean up on 6th May 2019 and are keen for people to get involved for a national

clean up on Mayday. Annette Laurie of Turn the Tide will be at Mountbatten Beach in Plymouth and her younger brother Andrew Frost will be based at the Vault Beach near St Austell; they are encouraging people to go anywhere close to them and do their bit for the environment.

They are already looking at finding public spaces where the collected plastics and waste can be turned into artwork - perhaps at the very places where it has been collected from!

Andrew and Turn the Tide are not a business or commercial venture and are not looking for money, just wish to raise awareness and start a movement that will grow for a national clean up, starting in Plymouth and Cornwall.

STRESS AWARENESS MONTH

This April welcomes stress awareness month! Presenting a conversation about one of the most common mental illness which affects almost half (39%) of the British population at least once a week at work. For 15% it’s every single day!

Are you stressed and under pressure? Are you struggling to cope with the daily demands of your life? Stress is something that affects the majority of us on a day to day basis, that being big or small. Stress Awareness Month has been held annually every April since 1992, and has been created to help educate people on how to deal with stress efficiently and to share awareness of the fact it’s ok to be stressed; you’re never alone!

WHY DO WE GET STRESSED?

Stress is a physical reaction that our body develops when we are under strain and pressure. Our body responds to this by producing chemicals and hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine ready to attack, known as the ‘fight or flight’ reflex. This can, unfortunately, trigger a butterfly effect of health problems. There are a variety of symptoms people experience when being stressed, including:

• Poor Judgement

• Inability to Concentrate

• ‘Brain Fog’

• Indecision

• Starting many tasks but achieving little

• Self-doubt

There are many factors as to why someone can become stressed and it is different for every individual. Something which could cause you to become stressed might not faze someone else; they could even find it enjoyable!

There are many aspects of general life which can cause stress such as:

• Bereavement

• Major events

• Illness or Injury

• Caring for a loved one

• Having too much on your schedule

• Relationship issues (partner or family)

• Financial Problems

• Work or School

• Commuting

• Children

• Commuting

• Just being stressed about stress!

We all know to try to balance the stresses of commitments between aspects such as work, your social life, eating healthy and staying fit can all have their strains.

But it’s not all doom and gloom!

Stress can have some positive external factors, after all where would we be without stress? It could be stress

regarding a new job or a wedding, any major life-changing events; high demanding successful situations are usually two things that usually come associated with one another.

HEALTH PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH STRESS

If stress isn’t dealt with correctly they can potentially lead to other health problems such as:

• Blood being diverted to muscles

• Aches and pains

• Problems sleeping

• Tiredness

• Fatigue

• Headaches

• Skin conditions such as eczema & acne

• Weight problems

• Digestive problems

• Reproductive problems

• Nausea, dizziness

• Chest pain

• Breathing problems

• Thinking and memory problems

• Damage to the immune system making you more susceptible to the cold and flu

Not only does stress cause physical health problems but if left untreated this can stem other issues involving your mental health to deteriorate, leaving you vulnerable to other problems such as depression and anxiety.

WAYS TO DEAL WITH STRESS

Stress is in no way avoidable but definitely manageable. There are a few things you can put to the test to learn how to manage your stress effectively and sustainably. You need to recognise what your personal symptoms are, that will be the first step into developing a change. Finding your own way of dealing with stress can be hugely beneficial to you, and may even change your entire outlook on life for the better; so why not give it a try!

HEALTHY BALANCED DIET

What can we eat and what cant we eat? It’s forever changing and can be extremely frustrating for many of us.

Ensuring you’re eating a healthy, balanced diet is so important to ensure that you’re boosting your immune system, lowering your blood pressure and subconsciously helping to lessen the way stress will affect your body! You’ll want to avoid comfort foods that are high in saturated fats as they can boost your moods temporarily but subsequently, this leads to energy crashes and less motivation throughout your day.

Why not try replacing caffeinated and alcoholic drinks for water, herbal teas, or diluted natural fruit juices as this will enable your body to cope better with stress.

GET MORE SLEEP

Sleep deprivation can significantly generate your stress levels to increase. However, having a lot on your plate can naturally result in restless nights, counting down the

hours before work. This affects your performance at work or school, consequently making you more stressed and it feeling like a never-ending vicious cycle!

Rather than becoming reliant on medication to allow you to drift into a sleep, try different methods. Studies have shown that meditating before bed, keeping off devices such as mobile phones, tablets and even watching TV (white light), as well as avoiding things such as caffeine to keep your heart rate down can all benefit to getting a good night’s sleep.

TIP: If you’re struggling to sleep try tensing your body working from the bottom of your toes all the way up to your shoulders!

EXERCISE

by focusing on positive words such as ‘calm’ or ‘peace’; if you find your mind has wandered or you become aware of intrusive thoughts entering your mind, simply disregard them and return your focus to the chosen word or phrase.

Physical activity is a great way of tiring you out. When exercising, your body releases endorphins known as ‘happy hormones’. These hormones can be used as a surrogate to metabolise the stress hormone. This natural high will boost your mood decreasing the amount of stressrelated hormones in your body!

Try to incorporate some exercise in your daily routines, even if it’s a quick walk around the park - get out to calm your body and mind.

RELAXATION TECHNIQUES

When it comes to different relaxing techniques, not every method will work for everyone. This is why you may end up trying a few techniques before you find the one which works for you.

Self-hypnosis has been proven to be very effective and is something you can try

IN A TRANCE

Hypnotherapy can be an extremely useful tool to get to the root of why you may be stressed and address the problem. Once you’ve discovered where your stress has originated from, you can begin your journey and get back to feeling like you again with the supported guidance you may need.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL HELP?

Of course we all experience ‘bad days’ every now and then, nevertheless if your bad days tend to last longer than around 5 days get in contact with your local GP or a counsellor to help get you back on track.

If you’re worried about your stress levels then take a stress test online by visiting www.stress.org.uk/ individual-stress-test/ - there’s always time to take action on your life!

Move M ore M onth

This April why not move a little bit more and help keep your heart happy?

ove more month is as basic as it gets when it comes to fitnessthemed activities. It can be as simple as going on a walk when you might not usually, or even extending your normal dog-walking route. A bike can also be a great idea, as the spring starts as the sun comes up for longer each day a bike ride through the countryside, the seaside, or anywhere you like can be the perfect exercise. Within this little guide I’m going to help you set your goals for the month, track your progress and create a habit for life.

WHat is move more montH?

As indicated in the introductory paragraph, Move More Month is all about keeping your heart happy and healthy. We all know why heart health is so important, but to put it into perspective, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death around the world. Just 30 minutes a day, five days a week (150 minutes in total), can be enough to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

HoW to Get your minutes in

Whether you think 150 minutes is a lot or not, it’s not always the easiest to fit into a busy schedule. This is where the simplicity of Move More Month shines—unlike other health challenges, Move More Month is simply about getting people out of the house. This can include a walk one day, a swim the next, maybe a bike ride or a gym session, and then you can freestyle the rest of the week.

One of the best ways to be and stay active is by joining a gym, No longer can your level of activity be dictated by the weather outside. Joining a gym can open you up to all sorts of exercises and classes. Going with a friend can be the best way to enjoy the gym for alot of people

Being more active is scientifically proven to support positive wellbeing by boosting what are known as our ‘happy hormones’ in the brain. Spending time outdoors is also shown to reduce stress and anxiety. So why not join us throughout April and move your way to a happier and healthier life?

Remember, it doesn’t matter how you move—just that you do it a little more often!

WHy move more tHis montH?

Moving more each day can work wonders for both body and mind. Regular physical activity boosts energy levels, improves heart health, and strengthens muscles and joints, making everyday tasks feel easier. It’s also a natural mood booster—exercise releases endorphins, reducing stress and anxiety while improving overall mental well-being. Staying active helps maintain a healthy weight, lowers the risk of long-term health conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and even improves sleep quality. . Social activities like group walks or dance classes bring people together, reducing loneliness and strengthening connections. Even small changes, like stretching in the morning or taking short walks, can improve posture, flexibility, and overall mobility. No matter the pace or intensity, every step towards a more active lifestyle leads to better health, more confidence, and a greater sense of well-being.

BuildinG tHe HaBit

Making working out a Habit can be challenge for many people but there are a few ways to make it easier. My first tip would be to start small, going for a small run or maybe a long walk. Putting too much pressure on yourself to get into the habit straight away can be more detrimental than benaficial.

As the days and weeks go on you will find yourself falling into my habit, where people then tend struggle is after a long day or week where maybe they’ve been too busy that they done excersise. This can be a difficult time but putting too much pressure on yourself can be the downfall. Allowing for a week off and getting back to it the next week is the best thing you can do.

Setting gOalS

Setting goals is probably one of the most important aspects of a fitness jounrey. Hitting your 150 minutes a week is a great first goal. adding extra, smaller or more specific goals can be a great way to track your progress. Some that I would suggest would be to go on longer bike rides or walks. Another way to measure your progress could be timed actvity; tracking how long it takes you to run 3K or 5K and then comparing your times over the weeks. Seeing this progression can be very motivating and keep you going in those weeks where it can be tough.

DOing it tOgether

Exercising with a friend or parter can be benaficial for multiple reasons. Accountability is the first big benafit, even on those days where you might not feel up for a walk or run having that othr person can give you the motivation to do some activity andd maybe have a catch-up at the same time. Chicken Salad

HEALTHY PIZZA

Method:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

In a medium bowl, add Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and self-rising flour. Mix with a spoon and then finish with clean hands, forming into a round ball of dough. .

Roll out the dough ball on a piece of parchment paper using a lightly floured rolling pin. The dough should form a thin crust.

Next, spread your pizza sauce evenly on the rolled out pizza dough.

Add the shredded chicken first, and then top with shredded cheese, pepperoni and veggies.

Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown.

IngredIents:

Self-rising all purpose flour Shredded Chicken

Greek yogurt/cottage cheese Mozzarella Cheese

Pizza sauce Additional Toppings

FLAP JACKS

IngredIents:

oil, for greasing

100g/3½oz butter, cubed

100g/3½oz golden syrup

50g/1¾oz mixed seeds, such as pumpkin, sunflower, linseed and sesame

50g/1¾oz dried cranberries

50g/1¾oz raisins

50g/1¾oz dried apricots,

250g/9oz jumbo porridge oats

1 large free-range egg, beaten

Method:

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lightly oil a shallow 20cm/8in loose-based square cake tin and line the base and sides of the tin with baking parchment.

Melt the butter and syrup together in a large saucepan over a low heat, stirring regularly with a wooden spoon. Take off the heat and stir in the seeds, cranberries, raisins and apricots and oats. Stir in the egg.

Spoon into the prepared tin and press until well flattened. (It’s important that the oats are pressed well, so that they stay firm enough to cut when baked. Use the back of a metal spoon to make sure they are fully compressed). Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until golden and lightly browned around the edges.

Mark the flapjack into 12 pieces without cutting all the way through, this will make it easier to cut the flapjack when it's cool. Leave until cold then cut the flapjack with a sharp knife.

Store in an airtight container, interleaved with baking parchment or foil for up to three days.
