It’s June, which means we’re almost halfway through the year!

2016 seems to be passing by very quickly, but we still have lots to look forward to.

The weather is warming up so head out to Saltram or the local parks for a walk, ice cream or a picnic. It’s time to stretch those legs and make the most of any sunshine we may get!

We discovered this month that the UK’s number two fish and chip shop is right here in Plympton. We had a great chat with Kingfisher Fish and Chips, which you can read about on page 14, about how they’ve created the most sustainable fish menu in the world. It’s pretty impressive!

Summer is in the air, time to open windows and doors and let in the fresh air. The last thing on our minds is security. Thieves also love this time of year, our guard is down and the pickings are easy, the temptation too great for opportunist thieves...

Here are a few simple tips to keep you, your loved ones and your belongings safe, saving the time and trouble of reporting to police and dealing with insurance companies.

Be aware of a recently reported potential mobile phone scam. If you receive a missed call from a number you don’t recognise, think twice before calling back. Particular care should be taken when responding to calls from unknown numbers beginning with 070/076, 084/087, 090/091 or 118. Genuine callers will leave a voicemail or call back later.

Scammers use automated systems to dial mobile numbers. The call often lasts less than a second and comes up as a missed call.

If you are in the back garden, make sure you secure the front of the house; lock the door, shut the windows.

If you have a downstairs window open, don’t leave items of value near the window.

Don’t leave your car keys, near the front door if you tend to leave the door open.

Don’t leave items of value in view of doors and windows.

Make access through windows difficult, restrict how far the windows can open.

Don’t leave expensive gardening equipment in the garden, lock it away securely.

An audible alarm that will alert you when a window, door or gate is opened. This does not need to be elaborate or expensive.

Having an open garden with low boundaries makes it easy for others to see if anyone is acting suspiciously on and around your property.

Check the ID of anyone who calls at your property. If you are unsure call the police using 101.

If you see someone acting suspiciously, please contact the police by phoning 101 at the earliest opportunity.

Don’t mention on social media that you are going away at any time.

Don’t leave items of value on view in your car.

How does it work?

Calls will typically be from a number beginning 070 or 076 (which look like mobile numbers but cost considerably more to call.) or from non-geographic numbers such as those beginning 084, 087, 090, 091 or 118. Anyone who does call the number back is charged for as long as they’re on the phone (at a high call rate).

What can you do?

To prevent making accidental or inadvertent calls (such as dialling a number when your phone is in your pocket or bag, for example), remove the suspicious number from your call log.

Avoid putting direct-dial shortcuts for friends and family on the home screen of your phone and set up a screen lock. This will prevent all use of the phone until you enter the PIN, pattern or password.

You can also bar calls to international and premium rate numbers. Speak to your provider for advice on how to do this.

If you believe you have fallen victim to a missed call scam, contact your provider as soon as possible.

CALLING PROUD GARDENERS! Gardening has long been a relaxing and rewarding hobby, and if you’ve worked hard to make your garden beautiful, why not open it up to the public? Around 3,800 gardens open their gates every year for the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) and yours could be one of them.

Funds raised go towards nursing and caring charities.

It doesn’t matter if your garden is big and grand, or small and quirky – as long as it’s full of character and well-loved, people will want to visit. Small back-gardens will be of interest to anyone who’s after inspiration and ideas for their own, and larger spaces make for a great afternoon out, hopefully in the sunshine!

The NGS ask that there are adequate parking spaces nearby and refreshments (tea and homemade cake always go down well!), and access to a toilet would be appreciated. As the owner, you simply need to be on hand to welcome visitors and answer questions about your garden. You might even pick up some tips and ideas from other keen gardeners who take a look around.

The NGS raises money for nursing and caring, which is the bedrock of its foundation. Charities which benefit from open gardens include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospice UK, Carers Trust and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

Money is also donated to the National Trust and 10

the Royal Horticultural Society to fund training in gardening skills. When you open your garden, you’ll be inviting guests to offer a small donation and you can sell cakes or even plants and gardening equipment to raise further money.

The National Gardens Scheme was founded in 1927 and it continues to grow as more gardens are added to the list, and volunteers and gardeners find more imaginative ways to raise those vital funds for charity.

The Trustees of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) recently announced the distribution of £2.7 million to its beneficiary charities as a result of funds raised at garden openings in 2015. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie for which the NGS is the biggest ever funder. In fact, since its foundation, the National Gardens Scheme has donated over £45 million to its beneficiary charities.

The beloved Mary Berry recently jumped aboard the scheme too, taking over as President in March this year having opened her own garden for over 20 years.

For practical reasons, not all gardens can be made open to the public but you could still be involved. The NGS relies on volunteers in each county who help organise the many garden events every year.

As expected, more volunteers are needed in the spring and summer when most gardens have their open days. Working with the NGS you’d be promoting the scheme, helping the owners of new gardens to have their first successful open day and finding new gardens to visit.

Some volunteers open their own gardens, while others just love the outdoors and have a keen interest in gardening. Help and training is given to all volunteers, and it’s recommended that anyone who wants to get involved has access to a car and email.

If you’re over the age of 16, fancy adding something to your CV and have an enthusiasm for gardening, get in touch with the team.

Do You Believe in Hypnosis?

Along with, ‘Is hypnosis real or a scam?’ this is a question that I hear a lot; do a search on the internet and you’ll find thousands of hits, it’s even used as one of the questions on a popular dating site!

It leaves me somewhere between amused and disconcerted. Amused, because no one ever questions: Is sleep is real? Do you believe in fainting? However, like any of these, it is another state of consciousness. Disconcerted, because it means that so many people are missing out on the amazing benefits that it can have on their lives because either they don’t ‘believe’ in it, or because they think that other people would think they’ve gone a bit ‘woo-woo’.

It also means that many people who have been helped by hypnotherapy don’t want to admit they have used it. This is a huge challenge for hypnotherapists because we know who we’ve helped but without their permission we can’t say.

So let’s put the record straight. The debate, even amongst the psychiatrists, psychologists etc. has been going on for years; is it an altered state or something else? I won’t go into the complex theories that some of the ‘experts’ have come up with, because they are really no longer relevant. Why? Because neuroimaging (EEG, fMRI, PET scans and the like) has provided us with the proof. In fact, a slam dunk!

Not only proof that it is an altered state of consciousness but also that it is doing what we’ve been telling people for years that it does, disconnecting the conscious from the subconscious so that we can talk directly to the subconscious mind.

In neurological terms it is a little more complicated than that; we would be using terms like ‘executive control areas’ and ‘emotional centres’ and talking about synaptic connections, cerebral blood flow and electrical activity (and they wouldn’t like the 12

word ‘subconscious’ but that is another discussion!).

Nevertheless, fundamentally, this is what they’ve found.

Scientists are notoriously slow in changing their minds, or making a decision about anything, and all the research is couched in terms of ‘it seems to’, ‘it may’ and ‘it is likely’ however when we come to look at what the research is showing us can be achieved with hypnosis, we can start to see the incredible range of possibilities available (that Hypnotherapists have known for years!).

There is evidence to show that hypnotherapy is helpful in pain and stress reduction, and therefore anything that is related to pain or stress such as: osteoarthritis, joint or muscle injury, fibromyalgia; asthma, stuttering, IBS, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, anxiety, cancer, PTSD, ME, dystonia… I could go on but I think you may get the idea!

Furthermore, there are the psychological issues of self-esteem, confidence, anorexia, weight loss, addictions and phobias etc. Although there is less research on these (due to the complexity of research methods), what there is, is positive. Besides, we’ve been telling you the truth so far, so perhaps it is time to ‘Trust me, I’m a Hypnotherapist’!

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES Did you know, you can pick up the most sustainable, tasty and nutritious takeaway from Kingfisher Fish and Chips in Plympton? Owners Craig and Nikki and their team have won countless awards and are pushing for more as they aim to become the number one fish and chip shop in the UK. It might sound optimistic but this isn’t entirely out of reach – they’ve already been given second place.

Their awards include the Fish and Chip Quality Award, of which only 250 chip shops in the UK can put their name to. The success has come in thick and fast for Craig and Nikki after they went in for four awards in their first year of opening in 2012, and having been shortlisted for them all, they’ve been motivated to keep at it and to come out on top.

Not only have Kingfisher been shortlisted for Best in the South West and Top 10 in the UK, they’ve also found themselves with the most sustainable fish menu in the world. They have 12 MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified species on offer, all properly sourced and of high quality.

“We didn’t know it at the time when we did it, but it was the most MSC species on a menu anywhere in the world. We thought it might be a UK record, but 12 sits quite nicely and it works well for us. When you enlist a species you have to register it with the Marine Council. All of a sudden we got our 12th one and we got an email back saying “Congratulations, we’d like to market you as the most sustainable fish menu in the world.””

The MCS (Marine Conservation Society, not to be confused with MSC) run a traffic light system to highlight endangered species and this is updated regularly. Therefore, Craig tells us that they “ensure that all of our seafood is kept in the green”, and won’t hesitate to remove a species from the menu if it’s no longer sustainable or if he doesn’t agree with the way it’s being farmed.

“We took cod roe off the menu for example, because we didn’t like the idea of it. It’s not an endangered species, not that it’s a species in its own right, but we didn’t like the way the boats go out farming for cod roe because that is the fish of the future. So we don’t do that, cod roe is not on our menu.

“So far we’ve taken 5 species off our menu, because they’re endangered or not in the green category. We take great pride in that.”

Kingfisher doesn’t always use fish from the Barbican Fish Market like many might expect, as there are simply too many fish and chip shops in Plymouth for the market to supply enough to them all.

“Our fish comes from the cold North East Atlantic, the Arctic waters, where it’s got certification and it’s sold sustainably. What happens is they’ll fish an area and

AND ENTREPRENEURS then do regular checks by measuring random sacks of fish from boats which come in. If the percentage of fish is too small they’ll lock that area down to let the stocks grow. It’s really well managed.”

It’s important to support fish and chip shops like Kingfisher, who are raising the bar high when it comes to standards and quality. Craig and Nikki are keen for their business to be top.

Craig is making a difference for his suppliers too - he recently managed to persuade them to get hold of MSC certified plaice, as they weren’t convinced there was a market for it. In the end they decided to give it a go and it’s been a huge success.

“We don’t stand still, we’re our biggest critics. We’re genuinely looking for the next big thing all the time.

We want to be the UK’s number one fish and chip shop, we’ll try hard. We’ve got to go for it again.”

The chip shop owner really cares about the food he serves and takes his responsibility seriously.

He’d been in the food industry for about 19 years in Sheffield when he answered a call to move to Plymouth and help operate and run a group of six fish and chip shops in and around the city.

We’re pretty certain that Craig and Nikki will soon run out of space on the walls to hang their awards.

Friday 3rd June is National Fish and Chip Day and Kingfisher will be raising money for the Fisherman’s Mission. Pop in and see them for fun and competitions as the team get behind the cause.

Eventually the owner of the business lost interest and Craig took the opportunity to buy Kingfisher, which was run-down and un-loved.

“We changed absolutely everything – we changed the potatoes, we changed the fish…absolutely everything had an upgrade.” Only the name remained the same, but the proud new owners added ‘Fish and Chips’ to the end.

Craig and Nikki only care that their customers receive the best, even refusing to put up prices if outgoings increase as they source better packaging and better quality food.

“It’s never been about the money - that comes as a result. When we first opened the business we set it out that we would always be quality-led.

“We give customers the quality and product and level of service they should be getting, and try to raise fish and chips to a different level. It’s always been about that, not about how much money we can make.”

There are lots of ideas in the pipeline at Kingfisher to better the customer experience and create a nutritious takeaway that everyone can enjoy. The meal can be completely tailored too, with baked potatoes as an alternative chips, and fish which can be battered, breaded or poached, and cooked in the healthiest way possible with fresh ingredients.

Rock Salt Cafe & Brasserie We’d already heard good things about Rock Salt and we weren’t disappointed. We were greeted by a calm atmosphere and friendly staff who seated us and gave us our menus - one being standard, the other being a tasting menu. We started off with warm, fresh bread with bowls of olives and balsamic vinegar, before sharing a plate of scallops. They were cooked perfectly and served with a teriyaki risotto. For our mains we chose the lamb steak (cooked rare, served with crunchy onion rings and chips) and bass which melted in the mouth. Both were presented beautifully and we had very generous portions - so much so that we couldn’t find room for the delicious-looking desserts!

Speedy Prawn Fried Rice Perfect for a Monday night when the last thing you want to do is cook, this rice dish is both filling and healthy

Serves 4

1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 red onion 200g pack mixed vegetable medley 200g pack large prawns, raw or cooked, defrosted if frozen 3 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce 500g cooked rice (home-cooked or Tilda Rizazz basmati rice) chopped coriander and soy sauce, to serve

1. Heat the oil in a large wok. Add the red onion and

vegetables, then stir-fry for 2 mins until starting to wilt. Throw in the prawns, garlic and fish sauce and cook everything together for 3-4 mins until the prawns change colour and cook through. (If using cooked prawns, you just need to stir them into the rice to warm through before serving.)

If you’re thinking about getting a puppy to make a fluffy addition to the family, have you thought about where you’ll get it from? Puppy farming is a huge problem in the UK, with huge numbers being illegally trafficked while very young, sick or dying.

With profit being the focus for those who deal with puppy farming, the dogs are often neglected. Many are taken from their mother before they’re old enough, basic, routine health care is ignored and they’re often transported during key development stages, which leads to behavioural problems.

The puppies are mainly bought into the UK from places such as Ireland, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania and Poland via Dover and the Channel Tunnel. They are then sent across the UK before being advertised for sale online to unsuspecting buyers.

It’s always important to see the puppy with its mother when meeting it, but a puppy which has been farmed often won’t be with its mum. If it is, the mother could be unhealthy, underweight or with an unusual temperament. A dog should not have too many litters for health and ethical reasons, but on puppy farms this is usually disregarded.

The environment you meet the dogs in is usually a good indicator of how they’ve been looked after, but this can be deceiving. It’s not uncommon for the 26

puppies to be kept in bad conditions while being advertised, and then taken to a house when being visited by potential buyers so that it looks like it’s coming from a good home.

The danger to buyers when purchasing farmed puppies is the ongoing cost of medical treatment when illness or disease surfaces, which is very common following such a terrible, unhealthy start to their life. This can be traumatic for a family who were hoping for a bouncy, cheerful pet. Aside from the cost, buying an illegally trafficked puppy only contributes to the industry and puts money into the pockets of those who abuse animals.

Purchasing a dog is a fairly lengthy process. Farmed puppies are often advertised as being ‘available now’ to entice anyone who doesn’t want to wait around. A responsible breeder will ask that the buyer visits the puppy a few times to

get to know it, and sometimes the initial visit may even be made while the puppy is under 8 weeks old, which is the age when it’s ready to leave its mother. The benefits of this are that the buyer will be told the exact age of the pup and its genetic background, as well being able to meet its mother.

It also gives peace of mind, knowing that the puppy has been looked after by a responsible person who cares about its welfare.

Buying an illegally trafficked puppy only contributes to the industry

trafficking, report it to the RSPCA, the police or your local council.

Do your research before buying a dog and don’t allow excitement to make decisions for you. Speak to other people who have bought dogs to hear their experience, visit rescue centres to ask questions and take advice from responsible organisations such as the RSPCA and The Kennel Club to help you to understand the process and how to care for your dog.

Visit www.rspca.org.uk and sign the petition to scrap the puppy trade.

Another option is to visit a rescue centre, where dogs have been found stray, abandoned or taken from an abusive owner. A buyer won’t be able to be as picky about the breed, there will be less information on the dog’s age and background and it’s less likely to be a puppy, but money paid for the dog goes back into the organisation to rescue more dogs, and you’ll be giving your new pet a good life and loving family which it may have never had.

WILD SWIMMING

M

any of us head straight to the nearest beach when the weather is good, but have you considered wild swimming? Although swimming in the sea could be considered ‘wild’, there are places within easy reach of Plymouth which offer a far more exciting swim.

Exciting because the scenery changes and the temperature of the water varies, and it’s a great feeling to be completely immersed in the environment. You might even discover some more secluded, unknown spots to take a dip.

It’s most pleasant, particularly if you’re new to wild swimming, to head out when the weather is warm and the sun is shining. When the water is cold you’ll be able to last longer in it when the sunshine is warm on your head. Shallow lakes also warm up easier in the summer, so it’s most ideal to head to them after a run of hot weather.

Running water will always be much colder, but a wetsuit will make the experience a lot more comfortable for even the most experienced swimmers. Leave the water if you start to shiver, and remember that cold water can reduce your ability to swim – allow your body to adjust to the temperature when you first get in.

Most lakes and rivers have a rocky bed, so footwear (Crocs or even an old, light pair of trainers) are essential if you want to explore.

When you go for a wild swim you’re relying on customary rights and owner’s goodwill. In some places swimming has become a tradition, but in less popular areas you could be asked to leave by the landowner which, if it happens, you should do so politely. Sometimes ‘no swimming’ signs will be in place, but often these are put here by landowners who are trying to limit their liability if someone gets hurt on their property.

Swimmers should give plenty of space to anyone fishing as noisy children may disturb the fish. It’s generally a peaceful hobby, and often those fishing will have paid for their space by the water.

When swimming with children check the depth before allowing them in, and don’t allow small children into running water which they may not be strong enough to swim in. Inflatable’s can be fun, but avoid using any which may cause the user to float away out of their depth.

As long as you take care and respect the environment, wild swimming can be incredibly fun, particularly when you find places with small waterfalls and pools. Dartmoor and Cornwall are full of spots to take a dip, so pack a picnic, take plenty of blankets and towels and go explore!

MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL June is a month not to be missed in Plympton St Maurice. The village celebrates its Midsummer Festival – an event that is a firm favourite for people from far and wide.

The Festival kicks off with a wonderful concert in the church on June 17th at 7.30 pm by the acclaimed Sir Joshua Reynolds choir.

The 50-strong choir’s range and repertoire make them much in demand. Their concert will perform music around the theme of “Feelings”. Tickets are available on the door or from 01752 346630, and are £5 which includes a glass of wine.

The traditional Lamb Feast is on Saturday 18th, 12-5pm, with the Plympton May Queen arriving on Castle Green in a vintage car, followed by scouts pulling the Victorian St Maurice fire engine.

In keeping with its artistic history, the Plympton St Maurice Painting Group will put on an exhibition the great Sir Joshua Reynolds would be proud of. A selection of beautiful paintings are displayed in the Plympton Guildhall – pause and enjoy the merits of the talented artists, and who knows, you might even be tempted to buy!

On Sunday 19th, 2-6pm, explore the Hidden Gardens of St Maurice. People from far and wide come to explore gardens that offer every sort of design and interest. Cream teas, ukulele bands and more make the afternoon special. Tickets are £4 from the Guildhall.

There’s a cavalcade of mouthwatering cars to drool over – and if that’s not enough there‘s the legendary barbecued lamb baps to really get the juices flowing.

Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself – the 100% Mortgage Not since the sub-prime taboo days of 2008 has a 100% mortgage been offered by a lender.

Since then, the closest the market’s come to it are the two 95% Help to Buy mortgage schemes, and one of them ends in December this year.

That’s why the news that the first 100% mortgage in eight years has arrived on the market, comes as good news. But will it help the right people? And is it truly a “100%” mortgage?

Well, there is a catch.

Whilst the buyers themselves may not need a deposit, a ‘helper’ of the buyer must put 10% of the purchase price into a savings account with that particular lender.

So this isn’t a 100% mortgage, it’s a 90% mortgage?

It may sound like that, but, no. Whilst the ‘helper’ will have to put the funds down, providing all of your mortgage payments are up-to-date, they will get these funds back with interest added on top after three years.

Why would the lender do this?

It helps everyone. The lender gets new mortgage customers, the buyers get their home and the ‘helpers’ receive interest on, what is effectively, a savings account.

However, on the not-so-good flipside, access to a 100% mortgage could also be seen as a lender’s ‘wager’ that house prices will increase by 10% within the next few years, as they are essentially guaranteeing that there will be enough equity in the property within three years to pay the ‘helpers’ back.

So, if your parents, or someone you’re close with, has any spare cash laying around, this could help you get onto the property ladder quicker than expected.

If you don’t have that luxury, this scheme could see yet another flood of buyers that could drive house prices up even further – putting that step onto the ladder even further out of reach.

Because of this dilemma, it is imperative that you speak to a professional mortgage adviser who will be able to assist you in finding a mortgage that is right for your needs and circumstances.

Forget boring burgers and sausages - impress your guests next time you fire up the barbecue with some more exciting ideas!

Barbecued mackerel

mushrooms & pate

sweet potato

marinated salmon

chilli & lime prawns

Wrap mackerel in tin foil with oil, a slice and squeeze of lemon, ginger, chopped chilli, salt and pepper and put it on the barbecue

Spread your choice of pate onto the underside of a large mushroom, add salt and pepper and wrap in tin foil

Boil sweet potatoes until soft, then slice into wedges, add a little oil and salt and put them straight onto a hot barbecue

Mix together lemon juice, crushed garlic, chilli powder and ground tumeric.

Spread this onto salmon and marinate before barbecuing

Put lime juice and a finely chopped chilli into a bowl.

Toss raw king prawns in the mixture to coat and pop them on the barbecue

tofu kebabs Dice tofu and coat in olive oil, honey and sesame seeds.

Slide onto kebab sticks with veg if you wish, and barbecue
