It’s the month for cosy layers, hot drinks, and the gentle excitement of the festive season beginning to peek through. Plymouth feels especially warm this time of year, with twinkling lights and a sense of togetherness filling the city.

In this issue, we’re celebrating all that November has to offer. From seasonal recipes and thoughtful gift ideas to style inspiration and local stories that highlight the heart of our community. It’s a time to slow down, reflect, and find joy in life’s smaller, quieter moments.

I’ve loved putting together this edition and hope it brings you inspiration, comfort, and a little sparkle as we step closer to winter.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Your stories and suggestions keep this magazine connected to the people and places that make Plymouth special. You can reach me at editor@ oracle.uk.net , and I’ll do my best to reply.

SHORTLISTED FOR

(£25K-£50K)

design Brief:

Lewis and Kylie Furse undertook a full renovation of their family bungalow in St Austell, transforming it into their first home together. With backgrounds in the building and glazing industries, they valued craftsmanship and wanted a kitchen that would be both the heart of their home and a social hub for family and friends.

Their vision was for a striking yet timeless open-plan kitchen blending traditional British design with a contemporary edge, featuring shaker-style doors, a seating area, and unique details reflecting their personalities.

design & material Choices

The Furses selected a Burbidge Chartwell kitchen in Putty, complemented by oak shelving and a bespoke black island for contrast. A Luna Linear brass pull handle was used on the island to create a bold statement. silestone worktops, sourced from Mayflower Stone, were chosen for durability and elegance. To achieve the high-end look of an in-frame kitchen without exceeding their budget, we used a false in-frame construction, providing a luxury aesthetic while remaining costeffective. The kitchen was designed to balance practicality and visual appeal, ensuring longevity.

use of space & Functionality

despite the kitchen’s large footprint, the layout was carefully zoned for efficiency and sociability. The island became the central hub, offering seating, prep space, and storage, breaking up the long open-plan area. A standout feature is the bespoke drinks cabinet, integrated into the kitchen with Häfele folding cabinet doors for sleek access. The utility room was seamlessly incorporated into the kitchen’s aesthetic, using Häfele victoria knobs for stylish yet cost-effective hardware.

häfele products & Custom details

Häfele products played a pivotal role in enhancing both functionality and aesthetics:

• Folding cabinet doors in the drinks cabinet for easy access.

• Rangemaster Belfast Sink, sourced from Häfele, for a classic, practical feature.

• A 400mm-wide bin for efficient waste management.

• Victoria knobs in the utility room for an elegant, budget-friendly option.

• Luna Linear brass pull handle on the island, creating a bold contrast.

• Overlighting on units to enhance brightness and warmth in a large space.

Bespoke Features & installation Challenges

The design included a lit alcove for the range area, glass cabinetry near the bar, and bespoke oak shelving created by Lewis. A challenge was integrating the kitchen design with the vaulted ceilings of the bungalow, but through careful planning, the team ensured the kitchen complemented the architecture while remaining functional and bright.

project management & Collaboration

We collaborated closely with the Furses over many months, adjusting the design as needed to be both ergonomic and aesthetic. Installer Kevin worked with external contractors, ensuring a smooth installation process and a high-quality result.

Conclusion

The Furses’ kitchen combines classic British design with modern convenience, creating a beautiful, practical space tailored to their lifestyle. Through thoughtful use of Häfele products, bespoke craftsmanship, and a well-considered layout, we delivered a kitchen that meets the clients’ needs and makes a striking visual impact.

“We wouldn’t change anything,” Kylie reflected. “[They] went above and beyond our expectations.”

AN AffORDAblE CHRisTmAs

THE PREssuRE Of

A PERfECT CHRisTmAs

There’s no denying it: the pressure to deliver a “perfect” Christmas seems to grow every year. We’re bombarded with adverts for lavish gifts, expensive decorations, and extravagant feasts. But who says Christmas has to be about excess? The true essence of the season lies in moments shared with loved ones, not in maxing out credit cards.

In the south West, we are lucky to live in one of the UK’s most beautiful regions, where nature provides some of the best holiday gifts for free. A winter walk along our stunning coastline or through a local woodland or on dartmoor can be just as magical as any costly Christmas outing. The key is to focus on experiences rather than things.

sAVVy GifTiNG

One of the biggest sources of Christmas stress is gift-giving. We’ve all felt the panic of finding the “perfect” gift at the last minute. But thoughtful, affordable gifts often mean so much more than a pricey gadget. Homemade presents, from baked goods to hand-crafted items, are heartfelt and personal. In fact, giving a loved one something you’ve put time and effort into can become a cherished tradition in itself.

Local markets are also a treasure trove for affordable, unique finds. Whether it’s a piece of locally made jewellery, artisan food, or handmade homeware, shopping from local traders helps keep money within the community, supporting small businesses during a challenging time.

don’t underestimate the power of practical gifts either. In recent years, experiences or ‘subscription’ gifts have become more popular, like giving someone a voucher for a meal at their favourite local restaurant or even a National Trust membership to enjoy Cornwall’s and Devon’s historic sites throughout the year.

CHRisTmAs ON THE TAblE

Let’s talk about the Christmas feast. For many, this is the highlight of the day, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With food prices on the rise, planning ahead is more important than ever. shopping local, especially at farmers’ markets or butchers, can sometimes be more affordable than supermarkets, and you get the added bonus of

supporting local farmers.

Why not consider swapping the traditional turkey for a cheaper cut of meat or even a vegetarian main dish? some of the best meals come from slow-cooked, hearty recipes that warm the soul without stretching your wallet. Plus, many families across the south West already grow their own vegetables—Christmas could be the time to showcase those home-grown goodies.

When it comes to drinks, while it’s tempting to splash out, there are plenty of affordable options from local breweries, cider houses, and wineries. supporting your local producers can also add a uniquely South West flavour to your celebration.

DECORATiONs THAT DON’T COsT THE EARTH

As for decorating, nature is the south West’s best gift. Instead of splurging on expensive decorations, why not make use of what’s around us? Pinecones, holly, and other natural elements can create stunning centrepieces and decorations. A homemade wreath, crafted with your family on a chilly afternoon walk, can be more special than any store-bought version.

Repurposing old decorations and making your own can also breathe new life into your home without the need for buying new each year. This not only saves money but also cuts down on waste, helping to make Christmas more sustainable.

EmbRACiNG THE sPiRiT Of simPliCiTy

This year, as we navigate rising costs, let’s remember that the best parts of Christmas aren’t found on a price tag. Whether it’s cosying up with a homemade hot chocolate, enjoying a blustery walk along the cliffs, or sharing a simple meal with loved ones, Christmas can still be magical—and affordable.

after all, when we look back, it’s not the gifts or the extravagance that we’ll remember, but the love, laughter, and togetherness we share. so, let’s embrace a Christmas that’s rooted in simplicity, gratitude, and the true spirit of the season. here’s to an affordable, meaningful Christmas in the heart of the south west.

Choosing Compassion Over Conformity: Why Wyatt Brothers Funeral Directors Are Plymouth’s

Trusted Choice

I

n the quiet moments after loss, what most people need is someone who listens, who honours individuality and who carries both the weight and the hope of farewell with grace. For many in plymouth, that someone is wyatt Brothers Funeral directors. independent, family run and deeply rooted in the community, they offer something rare in today’s world: a funeral service that feels personal, genuine and human.

A Place Built on Warmth and Trust

their home is the old Brewery building in stonehouse, which John lovingly restored from a derelict shell into a welcoming haven. inside, soft lighting, comfortable sofas and a fireplace replace the clinical feel often associated with funeral homes. thank you cards from grateful families fill the sideboards, proof that this is a place built on warmth and trust rather than formality.

that care extends to every part of what they do. wyatt Brothers often visit families in their own homes, offering comfort in familiar surroundings. their Chapel of rest on durnford street provides a calm alternative for those who prefer to visit in person. what truly stands out is consistency: whoever answers your call will guide you through the entire process. no call centres, no confusion, just genuine continuity and care.

Guided by Honesty and Compassion

transparency is another hallmark of their service. Funerals can be expensive, and John and richard believe families deserve honesty about costs. they publish a clear price list and never add hidden charges for third party services.

whether you choose a traditional funeral, a simple cremation or something entirely bespoke.

when the Covid pandemic struck, that commitment was tested like never before. restrictions meant small gatherings, no wakes and heartbreaking distance between loved ones. Even in those difficult months, wyatt Brothers found ways to help families say goodbye with compassion and creativity. at the same time, John faced his own battle with cancer, enduring treatment while ensuring the business continued to serve the community. supported by richard and his wife pippa, the team kept going, offering comfort when people needed it most.

Strength, Recovery and Renewal

John’s recovery is a story of strength and gratitude. today he is cancer free and more devoted than ever to his work. “life is fragile,” he says, “and every farewell should reflect love and individuality.” that belief is visible in every service they arrange. From traditional hearses and horse-drawn carriages to woodland burials and colourful coffins, Wyatt Brothers make it possible to celebrate a life in whatever way feels right.

the pair’s approachable nature also sets them apart. during the week, they choose not to wear black, preferring to encourage happy memories as well as tears. Families often leave surprised at how much they smiled. “we meet people as strangers and often end up as friends,” John says. it is that warmth which has earned them countless five star reviews and heartfelt messages of thanks.

Keeping It Personal

In a world where larger firms can sometimes treat funerals as routine, wyatt Brothers have chosen a different path. they have no desire to expand beyond plymouth, knowing that to grow too large would mean losing the intimacy they value. remaining small and independent allows them to do what they do best: care for each family as if they were their own.

For those seeking a funeral director who values kindness over convention and compassion over profit, Wyatt Brothers stand as a reminder that dignity and empathy still exist in their truest form. when the hardest moment comes, these are the people who will help you honour your loved one with sincerity, warmth and love.

To find out more or arrange a consultation, families are invited to contact them directly at 01752 600 437, email wyattbrothersltd@gmail.com, or visit their welcoming Chapel of rest at 5–7 durnford street, stonehouse, plymouth, pl1 3QJ. Their office is open from 10.00am to 4.00pm monday to Friday, with a 24 hour service available for urgent support

HAVE YOURSELF A SUSTAINABLE LITTLE CHRISTMAS

With Christmas in close proximity, it is all too easy to forget the positive eco-friendly advances we have made and switch to panic buying mode. It is time to slow down the Christmas shopping experience and think greener.

Ithink we can all agree that when it comes to Christmas, the excitement and the pressure gets to us all and a little bit of panic buying comes in to play. the pressure built up to ensure Christmas goes smoothly and nobody gets disappointed is getting bigger and bigger each year. i personally think that if we put less pressure on ourselves during this period, we would have more time to enjoy it. Christmas was never about the gifts and the money; it was always about spreading love and joy to all and spending the holiday with friends and family.

The amount of waste that comes after the Christmas period is largely fuelled by the sheer panic and excitement from shops and social media to make it the ‘best Christmas ever’. The more the merrier is the general thought process and who can blame us for thinking this way with the growing pressures of social media.

We are here to prove that you don’t need to miss out when it comes to making your Christmas more sustainable. In some areas, you can even save money by doing a bit of dIY! Eco-friendly products tend to cost more than un-sustainable, plastic items, however, they will last a lot longer which means you are saving yourself money in the long term.

Minimising your carbon footprint by sourcing products locally is the first step. We have an editorial in this issue all about how to spend locally in Plymouth this Christmas.

stockings are such a beautiful idea to bring a little bit of joy to your

Christmas morning in a very large sock! To fill these very large socks is the challenge behind the joy and this is when the panic usually sets in. We have come up with some sustainable and eco-friendly ideas to put in your loved one’s stockings this year.

Firstly, ask yourself if you have anything that your kids haven’t seen before that you could hand down to them. This could be a necklace you had when you were a teenager or an old favourite toy that has been well looked after. This meaningful gesture can go a long way as they are more likely to hold on to it as it has precious value.

Let’s not forget about the traditional satsuma at the bottom of every stocking! If forgotten, this will go mouldy and leave a foul stench at the bottom of your stocking!

The essentials that go into every stocking are pants and socks, this can be bought ethically by sourcing good quality products that are made to last. This means less will be thrown out. When your trusty sock does get a hole in or is running thin after many years, make sure you discard them in a clothes recycling point which can be found at many tips and clothing stores.

Opt for package-free products. shampoo and soap bars are a great alternative to your everyday plastic bottles. These bars tend to last longer and often have all-natural ingredients in which are more sustainable and healthier for the planet. You can buy a soap dish to keep them dry when you are not using them.

For kids, Play in Choc is a great way to add a sweet treat but without the plastic. Inside their boxes is a bar of delicious chocolate along with a cardboard animal that they can piece together. And when they get tired of playing with it, it can be easily recycled. And for the sweet tooth, support your local sweet shop and grab a pick and mix. Often, they will be in paper packets where no plastic is involved! You can also avoid waste by choosing only their favourite sweets.

Everybody gets excited when they see the first shoot of a plant they have nurtured come through. This is why putting in a packet of seed to their stocking may not be as daft as it sounds. If you opt for flower seeds, this will also attract bees!

Another must-have in any child’s stocking is some stationary. You can now purchase recycled pens and pencils from certain shops for

example; www.remarkable.co.uk and www.wearthlondon.com- You can find a range of eco-friendly items on both of those websites too. A candle to set the Christmas mood is always a great stocking filler however, candles are not good for the environment as you are essentially burning a fossil fuel as most contain paraffin. To avoid these candles, look for words on the candles packaging such as ‘natural, organic, coconut wax, rapeseed wax etc.’ You can also buy candles that have been recycled. A great shop to go for that is ‘The Recycled Candle Company’ in Exeter.

It is all too easy to be tempted by the smell of freshly ground coffee whilst walking through the city but make sure you’ve got your reusable mug! Add one of these to your loved one’s stocking for a great gift and to save money on your next coffee! A lot of cafes and Baristas will offer a discount if you bring your own reusable coffee cup!

So now your stockings are filled with eco-friendly goodness, let’s get on to the main presents!

Although wrapping paper has got the word ‘paper’ in it, most wrapping paper is not recyclable as it contains foil, glitter or plastic. Brown paper packaging tied up with string is the way forward! Actually, I think it looks a lot prettier and you can add your own personalised touch to it with some foliage, dried orange, and maybe even a stamp using eco-friendly vegetable ink! If you want some more colour to your packages, we recommend www.re-wrapped.co.uk, they have a wide range of Christmassy designs all made from vegetable ink!

come out of hiding each year and look spectacular. If you are in need of an extra bauble or two, avoid ones with glitter or that are made from plastic. Head to the high-end stores that offer quality baubles that are less likely to break over the years. Or, make your own Christmas decorations! Have a forage in your local woodland and pick some beautiful pinecones to hang on the tree. And if you are feeling peckish, make some Christmas biscuits, punch a hole through them, tie with string and you’ve got an adorable decoration that won’t go to waste!

By now, you may have planned your Christmas card recipient list but before you buy the cards, give them a little something extra this year.

www.earthbits.com are a UK based company that produce all sorts of eco-friendly products as well as Christmas cards! The unique thing about these cards is that when you are ready to throw them away, you can take them out of the bin and in your back garden as these cards have seeds in! By buying these cards, you are essentially giving them a card and a gift that keeps on giving!

When Christmas shopping- remember to take your bags for life with you to avoid having to take any unnecessary plastic bags home with you.

Christmas is the time for all things sparkly; glitter, sequins, tinsel, baubles, fairy lights and everything in-between. Unfortunately, all of those lovely sparkly items are made from plastic and are non-recyclable and often get washed down the sink and end up in our oceans. On a positive note, eco-friendly glitter exists! Try to refrain from using tinsel and make your own paper chains or homemade garlands that can have longer-lasting properties and are less harmful to the environment.

Most Christmas trees are green, but not all Christmas trees are green for the planet.

When it comes to buying your Christmas tree this year, make sure you are sourcing it as local as possible. And when January comes, make sure you contact www.recycledevon.org/ recycle-your-christmas-trees as they can collect your tree and recycle it!

Baubles should be a family heirloom and stored with care so that they can

Renting a Christmas tree is the new trend this year! If you are local to a farm that grows and sells Christmas trees, depending on the farm, you can rent it from them and come January, they will come and collect it from you and then re-plant it for next year!

did you know- It takes 20 years for an artificial tree to become ‘greener’ than a real one.

However, if you do prefer the ease of an artificial tree, or perhaps you need it for allergy reasons, you can still be mindful about the tree you choose. Some artificial trees are recyclable or made from biodegradable materials.

With all of these sustainable Christmas ideas, we hope this has inspired you to think outside the box and adopt an eco-friendly Christmas this year without compromising out on a thing!

A Sunday roast that’s on a whole new level

iners from across the south-west looking to enjoy a panoramic view while tucking into a delicious Sunday roast will be hard pushed to find anywhere more spectacular than marco pierre white’s steakhouse Bar & grill in plymouth.

Located on the penthouse floor of the Crowne plaza hotel on armada way, it affords what has been described as being one of the most impressive restaurant backdrops anywhere in the uk.

Affordable Glamour Above the Hoe

marco pierre white steakhouse plymouth is without question a destination with a difference. it affords stunning sea views over the hoe and to Cornwall giving the perfect backdrop for diners looking to enjoy what pierre white describes as ‘affordable glamour’ while the sunsets are regarded as being the best in the whole south-west.

the envy of many, as one would come to expect from a restaurant that is blessed with such stunning views the menus, which has been appropriately curated by one of the uk’s greatest ever chefs, matches its illustrious vista.

Memories Made Over a Meal

A firm advocate of taking time to enjoy a meal with family and friends, the gastronomic great is a firm believer around making memories, especially while sharing and enjoying a delicious sunday roast.

But understanding that not everyone will be able to replicate dishes that made him a household name during his culinary heyday, the famed restaurateur

has devised a sunday menu which he knows will delight and surprise in equal measure.

A Menu of Classics and Comfort

For starters guests can choose from a selection of classic dishes inspired from marco’s culinary past and includes the governor’s French onion soup, Box tree Chicken liver parfait, Classic prawn Cocktail and a long Clawson Blue Cheese pear & endive salad.

moving on to the mains, guests can choose either a roast pork, roast chicken or roast beef. or if they can’t choose just one, they will be able to enjoy the governor’s triple roast and savour all three meats.

For the Sharers and the Adventurous

there is also an option to enjoy a mighty 1000g rib of beef tomahawk and is great for sharing.

alongside the roasts, there is also a number of main dishes including Cod Lion with Lentils, Black Truffle, Ricotta ravioli, sirloin steak and Caesar salad.

Sweet Endings

and for those who have any room left can tuck into one of the fabulous puddings including mr white’s Classic Cheesecake, mr Coulson’s sticky toffee pudding or a warm Chocolate Brownie. there is also a selection of ice creams and sorbets and a union Jack Cheese plate appropriately made up of a rutland red, white stilton, Blue stilton and vintage Cheddar.

Tradition and Taste

Francesca Felton, restaurant general manager said: “as a specialist steakhouse it comes as little surprise that we’ve gained a reputation for serving one of the best sunday roasts in the south-west.

“tucking into a sunday lunch with family and friends is such a classic staple British tradition that simple cannot be ignored, especially with marco’s passion for classic and fuss-free cuisine.

“and speaking of tradition, there is also one element of a sunday roast that marco absolutely insists on and comes in the form of the yorkshire pudding! not only is it unique to the uk but is very much quintessentially British. marco says it should always take centre stage on any roast dinner served in his steakhouse.

A Dining Experience to Remember

“treating your family to a nice sunday lunch in a relaxed environment is a lovely way to show how much you care and is a great way to get the whole family together allowing everyone to sit back, relax and enjoy the day.

“we’re in the business of feeding people in a great environment where the service is of the highest standard. add to that the view and you can see why this is one of the best places to enjoy a sunday roast.”

OUR FAVOURITE

WARMING

RECIPE IDEAS

Embrace the colder weather by treating yourself to some delicious recipes to warm you up. From gooey cookies to a wholesome roast, there is something for any occasion!

Lentil soup

(Serves 4)

• 2l vegetable or ham stock

• 150g red lentils

• 6 carrots, finely chopped

• 2 medium leeks, sliced (about 300g)

• small handful of chopped parsley, to serve

ONE Heat the stock in a large pan and add the lentils. Bring to the boil and allow the lentils to soften for a few minutes.

TWO Add the carrots and leeks and season (don’t add salt if you use ham stock as it will make it too salty). Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 45-60 mins until the lentils have broken down. Scatter over the parsley and serve with buttered bread, if you like.

Slow cooker chicken tikka masala

(Serves 4)

• 8-12 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, each cut into

• 3 chunks

• 2 tbsp veg or rapeseed oil

• 1 large onion, chopped

• 2 garlic cloves, crushed

• thumb-sized piece ginger, finely grated or chopped

• 3 tbsp tikka curry paste

• 500ml passata

• 1 tbsp tomato purée

• 1 tbsp malt vinegar

• 1 tbsp light brown soft sugar

• 1 cinnamon stick

• 5 cardamom pods

• 100ml double cream

• handful chopped coriander

• cooked basmati rice, lime wedges and naan bread, to serve (optional)

ONE Heat the slow cooker. Season the chicken, then put the oil in a wide frying pan and, once hot, add the chicken. Don’t overcrowd the pan – you may want to do this in batches. Cook over a high heat until the chicken is browned, then transfer it to the slow cooker. Add the onion, garlic and ginger to the pan and cook for a few mins until softened. Add a splash of water and scrape any bits from the bottom of the pan, then tip everything into the slow cooker.

TWO Add the remaining ingredients, except the cream and coriander, then season well and cover with a lid. Cook on low for 5-7 hrs or on high for 4-5 hrs.

THREE Add the cream and check the seasoning, adding more vinegar, sugar or salt if needed. Cook for another 10-15 mins until hot. Ladle between bowls and garnish with the coriander. Serve with rice, naan bread and lime wedges, if you like.

Apple & blackberry jam

(Makes 1.75kg)

• 500g Bramley apples, peeled, cored, quartered and cut into 2cm chunks

• 1 lemon, juiced

• 500g blackberries, fresh or frozen

• 1kg granulated sugar

ONE Put two small plates in the freezer ready to test the set of the jam. Put the apples in a heavy pan or preserving pan with the lemon juice and 250ml water. Bring up to the boil, then simmer for 5-8 mins until soft.

TWO Add the blackberries and sugar and stir to combine. Stir over a low heat until the sugar his dissolved, then turn the heat up to medium and simmer for 30-35 mins until the jam is at setting stage.

THREE To test the jam, take one of the plates out of the freezer and place a little bit of jam on it, if it sets and when you run your finger over it and it wrinkles, it means it’s ready. Using a funnel, transfer the jam to a sterilised jar. Make sure you seal the lids once it’s cold. Will keep in the fridge for six months in a sealed, sterilised jar.

Easy chocolate chip cookies

• 120g butter, softened

• 75g light brown sugar

• 75g golden caster sugar

• 1 medium egg

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 180g plain flour

• ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

• 150g dark chocolate, cut into chunks

(Serves 10)

ONE Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line two baking sheets with parchment. Cream the butter and sugars together until very light and fluffy, then beat in the egg and vanilla. Once combined, stir in the flour, bicarb, chocolate and ¼ tsp salt.

TWO Scoop 10 large tbsps of the mixture onto the trays, leaving enough space between each to allow for spreading. Bake for 10-12 mins or until firm at the edges but still soft in the middle – they will harden a little as they cool. Leave to cool on the tray for a few mins before eating warm, or transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Will keep for three days in an airtight container.

Pot-roast chicken with stock

(Serves 4 with leftovers)

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 2.4kg chicken – buy the best you can afford

• 4 onions, peeled and cut into large wedges

• ½ bunch thyme

• 3 garlic cloves

• 6 peppercorns

• 175ml white wine

• 1.2l chicken stock

ONE Heat oven to 170C/150C fan/gas 5. Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and brown the chicken well on all sides, then sit it breast-side up. Pack in the onions, thyme, garlic and peppercorns, pour over the wine and stock, and bring to the boil. Pop on the lid and transfer to the oven for 2 hrs.

TWO Remove and rest for 20 mins. Carefully lift the chicken onto a chopping board and carve as much as you need. Serve the carved chicken in a shallow bowl with the onions and some of the stock poured over. Serve with some usual Sunday veg and roast potatoes.

THREE Strain the leftover stock into a bowl and strip the carcass of all the chicken. Chill both for up to three days or freeze for up to a month to use for other recipes like our one-pot chicken noodle soup. Recipes

Hot Toddy (Serves 2)

• 50ml whisky

• 3 tsp honey

• 1 cinnamon stick , snapped in half

• 1 lemon , half juiced and half sliced

• 2 cloves

ONE Whisk the whisky and honey together and split between 2 heatproof glasses. Add half of the cinnamon stick to each, then top up with 200ml boiling water.

TWO Add a splash of lemon juice to each, then taste and add more to your preference. Finish each with a slice of lemon, studded with a clove, and serve immediately.
