Editor’s Note...

Another month, another issue of Plympton Community Magazine. Did you know, July is named after Julius Caesar, being the month he was born in?

We’re moving into the second half of the year now, and with Summer Solstice already passed, we back on our way to Greenwich Mean Time.

We don’t mean to sound completely pessimistic (hey, perhaps you like the Winter?) but it does remind us of how quickly the year can pass and to pay attention to any goals we may have set ourselves for 2016.

Parents, enjoy your last few weeks before the kids are off school! Or perhaps your kids aren’t so little and are heading home from university to spend Summer with the family. Enjoy every moment with them!

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES You can tell a lot about a person from the books they have on their shelves, writes Duncan Little.

And 51 year old entrepreneur Trevor Worth, of Portcullis Legals, certainly has an impressive array of literature in the reception area of his offices in Cornwood, Ivybridge.

There’s Roy Jenkins’ highly acclaimed biography on Churchill’s life. As a quick aside, Trevor’s middle name is Winston as he was born on 30th January 1965, the day of the former Prime Minister’s state funeral.

Near to Jenkins’ work is one of Trevor’s favourites: Bill Walsh’s The Score Takes Care of Itself: My Philosophy of Leadership.

Bill was a NFL manager who successfully turned around the fortunes of the San Francisco 49ers and set down a blueprint of how to successfully manage teams.

The book is practically required reading in some boardrooms and, at its heart, it contains a clear message of how to properly treat your fellow human beings – a key part of Portcullis Legals philosophy.

Football is an important part of Trevor’s life.

Growing up in Devonport, Trevor would often play in the back streets with his friends for hours and went on to run the Umbro Total Soccer Academy for 13 years and ‘scout’ for a number of professional teams – including Blackburn, Watford and Wolves.

He aspired to build his own business and, at school, he realised he could achieve his goals in life and be a fundamentally sound person in the process.

“For me, it’s important to be a good person that’s doing good whilst doing business,” explains Trevor.

“I think it’s really important to be a decent person with integrity.”

And that integrity has certainly paid off. Awarded the accolade of The Herald Small Business of the Year 2016, it’s been 28 years of hard graft on a business which he started at the age of 23, with all of the ups and downs inbetween.

Stay Safe in the Sunshine Advice on how to care for your skin in the sun pops up every year, but it’s important to take note. Cases of skin cancer (malignant melanoma) have increased by 360% since the late 1970s, but following some simple steps and staying sun-safe can significantly reduce the risk.

While it’s good to expose the skin to some sunshine for vitamin D, many of us choose to stay outside, soaking up the rays, for far longer than we should.

UVB rays cause sunburn and are what the SPF helps to protect against. UVA rays don’t cause sunburn, but penetrate the skin and cause aging.

Both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer.

Although sun cream should be worn to protect skin from the sun, other precautions should be taken – wearing sunglasses with UV protection, covering up with loose clothing and a hat and staying out of the sun between 11am – 3pm when the sun is strongest.

Some sun cream is advertised as ‘water resistant’, but remember that this is different to ‘waterproof’. It simply means that the SPF protection will last a little longer in the water than standard sun cream, but it will eventually wash-off, particularly after drying off with a towel.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE

APPLYING SUN CREAM

Children’s sun cream often has a high SPF and less chemicals than that of regular sun cream, to make it kind to sensitive skin. It can be a challenge to get wriggling, excited kids covered in sun cream, but it should be re-applied regularly throughout the day.

Sun cream should be re-applied as regularly as possible, particularly after swimming, regardless of the SPF level. Even once-a-day sun creams should be re-applied.

Babies under 6 months should be kept out of the sun completely, and children, particularly those with fair skin and freckles, should stay in the shade as much as possible. Swimsuits which cover a lot of the skin are a good idea, as are hats and t-shirts to cover up.

BUYING SUN CREAM You might have a few favourite brands when it comes to sun cream, but packaging and price is never as important as the UV protection they offer.

Everyone should wear at least SPF15 in the sun, and look out for UVA protection of 4* or higher.

Children and anyone with fair skin should look for SPF50 to protect their skin better.

An adult should be looking to use about two tablespoons of sun cream to cover their entire body while wearing a swimming costume. Skin should feel completely covered, almost greasy to touch, not forgetting the tops of the ears, eyelids and feet.

A lot of people burn their scalp and hairline in the sun, but you can buy scalp and hair sprays which are usually in the form of a dry oil and can be sprayed directly onto the parting and any other areas exposed to sunlight. This is particularly important for those with red or fair hair, but wearing a hat is an even better option to sunscreen.

BUSINESS PROFILE Malcolm Harrison is perhaps the most eccentric and unique accountant you’ll ever meet – something which he admits himself. We’re invited into the offices of MH Associates, which sit above the Tudor Rose Tea Rooms on the Barbican in a building which dates back to 1640.

MH Associates offer bookkeeping, accountancy and payroll services to small-medium businesses - they are a company that really cares about their clients. Treating everyone as he would expect to be treated himself, Malcolm Harrison prides himself on his ability to keep hold of his clients and he makes himself available to meet them at any time of day outside of regular working hours.

Born in 1951 to a Barbican family, he has plenty to tell us. For over 100 years the family business, Harrison and Sons Ship Chandlers occupied premises on Southside Street, so Malcolm really has brought his business back to his family roots.

At school he took an interest in teaching, so studied for his degree and went on to spend ten successful years as a junior school teacher, first in Hertfordshire and then back in Devon.

Eventually he decided to move on from teaching and headed back to his home city where the government helped him to retrain in accountancy and bookkeeping.

In 1983 he got a job with British Rail. Not wanting any responsibilities he was quite happy to be a stores clerk working at Laira Depot. But after just a few weeks he was promoted and given more responsibilities, and in 1991 he became the area Materials Manager.

As Malcolm tells us his past, it becomes apparent that being a part of various unions is very important to him. Whilst working on the railway he became a union rep for the clerical staff, and he was and still is a member of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association. In 2012 he was given a gold medallion in recognition of his long service which resulted in him being awarded with honorary life membership.

He started to develop an NVQ qualification for Storekeepers on the railway and in 1994 an opportunity arose for him to apply for a grant from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (www.wcmt.

org.uk). This was setup as a living memorial to the great leader and each year applications open for particular categories. The grant enables British citizens to travel abroad, research inspiring practices and then bring that knowledge back to the UK for the benefit of others.

In that year a Training and Education category was open for applications. Malcolm was keen to head abroad to investigate the training of staff on railways to identify best practices and to bring them back home. Malcolm’s application was successful, so he used the grant to travel to Hong Kong and Australia.

Malcolm learnt a lot and avoided hotels so that we could stay with locals and understand their way of life. He discovered that Australia mirrors the UK transport industry, and he took home valuable knowledge and experience to implement at Laira Depot upon his return.

Unfortunately he was later made redundant with 50% of the other managers at Great Western Trains when First Group took the company over in 1998.

He went to a job centre with his CV, but found it difficult to convince them that he managed a £30 million a year budget. He took up a position within a travel tour agency, and in his spare time he used his previous experience of bookkeeping to help a local accountancy practice.

In 1999 the owner of the accountancy practice offered Malcolm the opportunity to become his

- MH ASSOCIATES business partner. The following year he decided to setup business on his own and he formed MH Associates.

He started off with a very small clientele and still works with some of those clients today. He has built up his business with over 400 clients, some of which are based overseas and he deals with every single client offering a bespoke service.

Every six months he’s invited to London to be briefed on the latest changes in tax legislation by Price Waterhouse Cooper, the country’s leading accountancy firm. Malcolm also knows some of the special advisors within Parliament and the House of Lords, and has given advice to MP’s in the past.

“Through being a Winston Churchill fellow I’ve become a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and that’s opened doors to me. I’m in and out of the House of Lords quite a bit”.

As the Queen is patron to the Winston Churchill Trust, Malcolm was invited to meet her in March 2015 on the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death.

He tells us it is customary to accept an invitation from the Queen, so following an email asking if he would be available to meet her, he received his formal invitation in the post which he is currently having framed by a client.

Malcolm Harrison and then found himself running a business in the industry with many loyal clients - we’re impressed.

“It’s called the University of Life”, he tells us with a smile on his face. “You make mistakes and you learn from those mistakes”. It seems that life experience, wit and a unique personality have brought him very far indeed.

Back to his business, Malcolm tells us that “I’ve always had a vision of a one-stop-shop. If someone comes into me I’m able to provide them with payroll, self-assessment, you name it I’ll try to do it”. He describes his business as “generalist”.

“95% of my clients I can do everything for, but there’s a small percentage of those where I need to bring in extra expertise”.

He uses those around him and their skills to assist him with his business. For example if someone needs pension advice, he knows who he can send them to for help, and he uses solicitors that he works with regularly and can trust.

We finish off by asking Malcolm how he learnt everything he knows. He was trained in accounting

Slimming World Bye Bye Baby (Weight)

Holly Eddie, now 5 and a half stone lighter than her heaviest weight says "I was always classed as overweight but during both of my pregnancies I gained over 4 stone not just from the pregnancies but from eating the wrong foods and a lot of them!. I told myself I would worry about losing weight after the birth but it is easier said that done with 2 small children and old eating habits die hard!"

BUSINESS PROFILE Chris Reilly is the centre owner of the Plymouth branch of Signs Express. We rely on signs everyday to tell us where to go and where we are, and we spoke to Chris about the importance of signage for businesses.

Nearly 20 years ago, Chris Reilly left the Navy and opened the Plymouth branch of Signs Express. He’s part of the largest signs company in the UK and Ireland, which has 25 years experience and branches across the country. They’re “Proud to Franchise”.

At age 40, Chris retired from the Navy but wasn’t ready to call it a day with his career. He was keen to work for himself, so set about finding a franchise with his wife.

“We looked at a lot of franchises, and looked at their concepts and understood what was required. We saw a lot of good ones and some not as good, but we chose Signs Express because, in our opinion, it was the way to go. They’ve been very good and have expanded the network significantly over the time we have been with them.”

One person specialises in vehicle wrapping and another does a lot of installations, then there’s a production manager, and designers who create the concept before it’s produced. Chris doesn’t get too involved with the production of signage, but manages his talented team and looks after clients as he brings their ideas and projects to life.

Chris and his team also compete to win awards within the franchise, coming in as a finalist in 2014 for Best Sign Project. This is judged not only on the final product, but also on the entire project management.Back in 2005, the team were presented with awards for the Best Vehicle Graphics project, for which they worked on graphics for a powerboat. There are few limits to what Signs Express can do in this industry.

The business specialises in vehicle graphics, exterior and interior signs, window graphics, exhibition displays, PVC banners, labels and stickers, and health and safety signs for Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

It’s easy to spot their work, and many people in the city walk by it every day. The stainless steel signage on the wall of the Roland Levinsky building at Plymouth University was created by the team at Signs Express.

“The reason we liked that project so much is because we were involved with the whole build.

Sometimes the projects are for existing businesses which are going through a rebrand and refurbishment. One of those companies was Gillakaster Solicitors, who had new signage plus digitally-printed, etched effect vinyl applied to interior windows.

At the moment the team are working on signage for Burts Chips, which includes a vehicle wrap on a Mini Cooper.This is carried out in a temperature controlled vehicle bay, which ensures that the member of staff has the perfect environment to work in while achieving a high-quality finish on the product.

Dartmoor Brewery took a large white van to Signs Express for a vehicle wrap with their logo and branding. They needed a black background as part of their branding and identity, so the entire van was wrapped and it’s very difficult to tell that the van was once white. This wrapping is hardwearing against chips and scratches, and can eventually be peeled off to reveal the paintwork underneath as it was.

This all forms part of Chris’s busy, daily schedule, which starts off with a drive through the beautiful South Hams where he lives. His days include production meetings with the team, responding to quote requests and keeping on top of admin, between meetings with new and existing clients to organise projects. Part of their service is the offer of free site visits as Chris discusses their signage requirements with them.

When Chris isn’t at work, you can find him sailing. In June, he and five others (including his cyclist/runner son) took up the challenge of the South West Three Peaks Yacht Race. This involved sailing 125 miles, cycling 140 miles and running 29 miles in just one weekend, and all money raised by the team and their supporters has gone to St Luke’s Hospice.

Back in the office, Chris is constantly looking ahead to the future to see who he can work with next. Their equipment is all fairly new, and each investment reduces their lead times and extends the range of products and services on offer. “Our

The team have also been utilising their ‘Rolls Roller’ flatbed, which applies digital images to large panels quickly, efficiently and accurately.

Chris believes that signage is an incredibly important part of any business. “Signs and graphics are still one of the most cost effective advertising mediums and can last for years, so they’re a great investment for any business. 97% of people in our recent survey said that professional signs help give a positive first impression of a business so it’s an opportunity not to be missed.”

It’s Time To

picnic!

A family picnic is one of summer’s most simple pleasures. We all have fond memories of sunny days in a treasured spot, spent eating sandwiches and cakes while surrounded by colourful blankets and greenery. Relive those memories now the warm weather is back, and pack up tasty food and drink and head to a beautiful beach, a grassy spot by a river or your favourite park.

top tip Invest in a good picnic bag and it will see you through many summers. Choose one with all the cutlery and plates you’ll need, and look out for attached blankets, miniature chopping boards and napkins.

apple mojito To serve three: Squeeze and place 12 lime wedges into a jug. Dust with some sugar, add plenty of mint leaves (more for flavour), add ice and pour in 150ml of apple juice. Mix it all up and top with soda or lemonade.

This can be prepped and put together in a jug at the picnic, or be poured ready-made into a flask to keep cool and served into plastic cups.

Remember to pack straws!

This also makes for a refreshing drink to serve at a BBQ.

top tip If you’re let down by rain, have your picnic indoors. Roll out the blanket and go online to find videos of past festival acts to play on the TV. Chances are the crowds you see will be dancing in the rain too!

Kids will enjoy using the the plastic plates and cups, and you’ll have the kitchen on hand should you need anything extra to serve up the grub!

spinach, chicken & pomegranate salad

virgin colada

170g baby spinach 4 chicken breasts Handful of pomegranate seeds Chopped avocado (optional) To dress: Balsamic vinegar & lemon juice To season: Salt & pepper 1. Place the chicken breasts on a griddle pan and allow them to grill.

2. Combine the spinach, pomegranate seeds and avocado (if using) in a large, lidded salad bowl.

3. When cooked through, pull or chop the chicken into small pieces and add to the salad bowl.

4. Dress with balsamic vinegar and lemon juice, and season with salt and pepper.

Prepare on the day of the picnic and store in the lidded salad bowl or an airtight container.

To serve three: Pour 500ml pineapple juice, 200ml coconut cream and ice into a blender. Blend until smooth and serve.

For a picnic, pour into a large flask to keep cool and serve later in plastic cups.

If enjoying at home, garnish the rim with a segment of pineapple for added “wow” factor.

Communication is key during the divorce process Lack of communication has been said to be the main reason why a couple separates. Following a break-up, couples often feel that if only they had been able to talk about their worries and troubles then they may not have split after all.

In an ideal world, separated couples would still speak on the phone, or in person, but sometimes this is just too emotionally charged. In those circumstances a text message or email can be useful to keep communication open but it needs to be kept brief, to the point and free from emotion in order to keep dialogue going.

Some tips for emails and texts are • Keep them concise and to the point. Try to limit the content to just what you wish to discuss.

• Do not be tempted to drag up old disputes or “push buttons” • Try to include clear questions/suggested arrangements, which will then hopefully promote a clear response.

• Take the time you need before you respond to any texts or emails to think through what you want to say. Knee-jerk replies can sometimes not put across exactly what you would have wished or it can be taken in the wrong way.

Wherever possible ask friends, family and especially new partners to let you communicate with your former spouse without their influence. Your support network will want to help you and will be fiercely on your side but negative comments or making arguments on your behalf rarely moves you further through the divorce process, which no doubt you will wish to have resolved as quickly as possible.

Do not be tempted to use any form of social media to communicate with your former spouse or to make any comment about your personal life. Also, try to explain to your friends and family that any comment they make, however supportive of you or amusing at the time, may inflame an already tense situation which is not helpful in the long- term. Try to speak positively (or at the very least neutrally) about your former spouse especially if your children are in earshot.

Any communication, even if not from you, can be reported to your legal representatives and to the Court, which could increase your legal fees and possibly the length of time your case will take to resolve.

If you are one of the separated couples who are able to speak directly then do everything you can to keep that going. Remember that your tone of voice is important as you may, by saying something forcefully, come across as being aggressive and cause upset without meaning to do so.

Remember it is also important to keep open a line of communication with your legal representative or mediator. They cannot help you if they do not know what is going on.

Don’t bottle up your emotions and worries; silence breeds suspicion, sadness and resentment.

Communicate as best you can as soon as you can and you will move through this difficult experience as quickly and positively as possible.

BUSINESS PROFILE Did you know, you can pick up the most sustainable, tasty and nutritious takeaway from Kingfisher Fish and Chips in Plympton? Owners Craig and Nikki and their team have won countless awards and are pushing for more as they aim to become the number one fish and chip shop in the UK. It might sound optimistic but this isn’t entirely out of reach – they’ve already been given second place.

Their awards include the Fish and Chip Quality Award, of which only 250 chip shops in the UK can put their name to. The success has come in thick and fast for Craig and Nikki after they went in for four awards in their first year of opening in 2012, and having been shortlisted for them all, they’ve been motivated to keep at it and to come out on top.

Not only have Kingfisher been shortlisted for Best in the South West and Top 10 in the UK, they’ve also found themselves with the most sustainable fish menu in the world. They have 12 MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified species on offer, all properly sourced and of high quality.

“We didn’t know it at the time when we did it, but it was the most MSC species on a menu anywhere in the world. We thought it might be a UK record, but 12 sits quite nicely and it works well for us. When you enlist a species you have to register it with the Marine Council. All of a sudden we got our 12th one and we got an email back saying “Congratulations, we’d like to market you as the most sustainable fish menu in the world.””

The MCS (Marine Conservation Society, not to be confused with MSC) run a traffic light system to highlight endangered species and this is updated regularly. Therefore, Craig tells us that they “ensure that all of our seafood is kept in the green”, and won’t hesitate to remove a species from the menu if it’s no longer sustainable or if he doesn’t agree with the way it’s being farmed.

“We took cod roe off the menu for example, because we didn’t like the idea of it. It’s not an endangered species, not that it’s a species in its own right, but we didn’t like the way the boats go out farming for cod roe because that is the fish of the future. So we don’t do that, cod roe is not on our menu.

“So far we’ve taken 5 species off our menu, because they’re endangered or not in the green category. We take great pride in that.”

Kingfisher doesn’t always use fish from the Barbican Fish Market like many might expect, as there are simply too many fish and chip shops in Plymouth for the market to supply enough to them all.

“Our fish comes from the cold North East Atlantic, the Arctic waters, where it’s got certification and it’s sold sustainably. What happens is they’ll fish an area and then do regular checks by measuring random sacks

Craig is making a difference for his suppliers too - he recently managed to persuade them to get hold of MSC certified plaice, as they weren’t convinced there was a market for it. In the end they decided to give it a go and it’s been a huge success.

The chip shop owner really cares about the food he serves and takes his responsibility seriously.

He’d been in the food industry for about 19 years in Sheffield when he answered a call to move to Plymouth and help operate and run a group of six fish and chip shops in and around the city.

“We don’t stand still, we’re our biggest critics. We’re genuinely looking for the next big thing all the time.

We want to be the UK’s number one fish and chip shop, we’ll try hard. We’ve got to go for it again.”

We’re pretty certain that Craig and Nikki will soon run out of space on the walls to hang their awards.

Eventually the owner of the business lost interest and Craig took the opportunity to buy Kingfisher, which was run-down and un-loved.

“We changed absolutely everything – we changed the potatoes, we changed the fish…absolutely everything had an upgrade.” Only the name remained the same, but the proud new owners added ‘Fish and Chips’ to the end.

Craig and Nikki only care that their customers receive the best, even refusing to put up prices if outgoings increase as they source better packaging and better quality food.

“It’s never been about the money - that comes as a result. When we first opened the business we set it out that we would always be quality-led.

“We give customers the quality and product and level of service they should be getting, and try to raise fish and chips to a different level. It’s always been about that, not about how much money we can make.”

BUSINESS PROFILE Business and performance coaching has become popular over time in major cities in the UK, and Andrew Holland is bringing Effectus Coaching and Development to the South West. He explains how businesses and individuals can benefit from his coaching, experience and expertise.

“It’s important in any business that people address all areas of their life.” Andrew works on, what he calls, “The people element of business coaching” which makes him stand out in this industry.

For example, a company might have a sales process which worked at first but is now failing, and Andrew will address the application, rather than the process itself.

“I work with people on application, and that can be everything from sales through to customer service, to time-management, stress management, leadership, management and planning - that’s what I do.”

Andrew has always had a competitive, can-do attitude, and has been a sportsman all his life.

Born and bought up in Warwickshire, Andrew joined the Navy at the age of 17 and spent 26 years working with them as a physical trainer. He was selected early on to play representative sport, and this spurred him on to study for a sports psychology diploma in ‘99-’00.

“It really started to slot things into place about performance. What I then started to notice was that it wasn’t just about sport - I started to make the connection between sport and business and the way we do it. I was still in the Navy, and the military is all about production, all about efficiency, and all about working together as a team.

“This intrigued me and I began to study the concepts and applications of team and individual development, completing a Certificate in Education; Coaching, Leadership, Management and Development qualifications as well as studying to become a Trainer of Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy and most recently gaining authorisation as a Corporate Plus Coach on the YB12 International Coaching Framework.

“Alongside my role as a physical trainer, I also qualified as an Adventure Training Instructor and 34

as a result went away on a lot of major expeditions, including one to the Himalayas where he helped teams to develop their skills together.

“That expedition team is no different to an engineering team, they still have objectives that they want to achieve. Salary is important, but motivation to do a job is a bigger drive than salary once the basic salary needs are met. Businesses keep those people and the productivity goes up. You create a win-win situation where you have much happier staff who are treated well and who want to stay. If you can make your workforce feel a part of and fully understand “WHY” you do what you do, they will belong to it, take ownership and go that extra mile to generate success, this makes a huge difference.”

Andrew firmly believes that success shouldn’t necessarily be judged by a bank balance.

“One of the biggest things is getting people to appreciate that success doesn’t necessarily mean 60 hours a week.” He agrees that sometimes this is unavoidable, particularly for business owners, but it’s about recognising WHY you’re doing it!

“Do I want to work my socks off now, not enjoy my kids growing up and be at loggerheads with my wife? Brilliant, I could retire at 55 and potentially have made a whole heap of money, but at what cost?”

“Who wouldn’t want to live down here? I would never say never to anything, but I cannot see myself going to live back in the Midlands. I love living in the South West, and living where I live in Cornwall, and the fact that within 20 minutes I could be on Dartmoor, or be walking on Whitsand Bay beach. I’ve been all over the world and I’ve never set foot on a beach which has been better than Whitsand Bay. That’s why I want to live down here.”

“My goals over the next 12 months are to grow my business in the South West. I want to grow it in and around Plymouth and then spread that out into the South West.”

Strawberries and Cream Cheesecake Jars

Make your strawberry ripple cheesecakes portable by packing them into jam jars, then enjoy on a summer picnic

Makes 8

200g buttery biscuits (we used Fox's Butter Crinkles) 200g cream cheese 200ml double cream 6 tbsp icing sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g strawberries, halved or quartered

YOU WILL NEED: 8 jars with lids

Method

1. Blitz the biscuits to crumbs in a food processor or in a bowl

with the end of a rolling pin. Divide the biscuit crumbs between the jars.

2. In a large bowl, whisk the cream cheese, cream, 5 tbsp icing sugar and the vanilla extract until softly whipped. Tip half the strawberries and the remaining sugar into another bowl and crush with a fork to a purée. Ripple the purée through the cream and divide between the jars. Top each cheesecake with remaining strawberries, secure the lids and chill.

Smoothie You might already own a blender, but it’s gathering dust in the kitchen cupboard while you summon the energy and ideas to create a mouth-watering concoction.

If not, perhaps you’re thinking of buying one but you’re wondering whether you’d get much use out of it? Below are some simple, yet very tasty recipes to get you inspired and churning out smoothies in no time.

1 frozen, chopped banana 200ml coconut milk 1 shot espresso 1 tbsp almond butter

1/2 an avocado 8 strawberries 3 tbsp natural yoghurt 200ml semi-skimmed milk

Make your shot of espresso and leave to cool. Put all ingredients into the blender and mix until smooth.
