Another month, another issue of Plympton Community Magazine. Did you know, August is the last month of summer and it’s also National Watermelon Day on the 3rd!

We’re enjoying time in the sun with the family, having the odd BBQ and beach walk with the dog, already dreading the autumn coming because it’s back to school for the kids (are we actually dreading it?) and back to work without a holiday to look forward to! So let’s make the most of this month!

Less Waste...

More Reusing and Recycling!

Landfill sites are no longer just big holes in the ground which waste is dumped into. They’re gradually being improved, with better management of the sites and gases emitted from waste being used to power wind turbines. However, a lot more can still be done by us in our homes to reduce our waste and start recycling as much as possible.

Fruit & Vegetables We’ve seen oranges displayed in plastic trays, wrapped in cellophane – but is there really any need for this when oranges come with their own natural packaging? When shopping in the supermarket, leave the plastic bags and pop your fruit straight into your basket. Even better, shop at a local fruit and veg shop or farmer’s market. They create minimal waste, and if bags are required, you’ll usually be handed a paper one rather than plastic.

Carrier Bags We’ve all finally come to terms with paying 5p for carrier bags when we go shopping, and already we can see the difference it’s making. It’s great to see people turning up to the supermarket with their own, re-used bags, and it’s exciting to think about the change this is already making to the environment. We’re sure that ladies will have surprised themselves with the amount of shopping they can fit in their handbags when they try!

If you still find yourself picking up a new carrier bag each time you’re at the till, buy a bunch of fabric tote bags and keep them in convenient places – by the front door, in the car, under your desk at work, etc. You’ll always have one to hand.

Recycling Learn more about recycling. Some households don’t recycle enough, while others are very keen and start setting aside packaging that can’t actually be recycled. It also varies council-to-council, so if you’re new to the area or move out of it, check what services are available. There is a long list of things which can be recycled, but some common mistakes are crisp packets, plastic bags, Tetra packs (drinks cartons) and cellophane – none of this can currently be recycled from homes in Plymouth.

Give everything a rinse before placing it into your recycling bin, don’t put anything into plastic bags and remove bottle tops before recycling plastic bottles.

Kids Get the kids involved with recycling so that it becomes normal for them – they’ll continue to recycle for the rest of their lives if you show them how. Teach them what can go into the recycle bin, and also demonstrate how you cut down on waste.

Kids tend to leave much of their food on their plate, so only cook what you think they might eat and teach them about food wastage.

A useful activity to help little ones understand why it’s important to recycle is to take them on a beach-clean. Next time you go for a walk along the coast, take bags with you and encourage your kids to pick up bits of plastic and rubbish which litter British beaches, causing an eyesore for visitors and locals, and a big problem for our birds and marine life.

Wild Foraging For most of us, stocking the kitchen cupboards involves a trip to the supermarket, but have you ever considered doing your food shop in the wild?

There is plenty to be picked once you’ve learnt the basics, and all of it is free!

Every season brings with it a fresh batch of tasty greens, seeds and fruit, so get outdoors and enhance your family meals with some interesting, new flavours!

is fun for kids who get to grow up surrounded by nature, exploring the different flavours which grow around them, and it’s also great for grown-ups who get to stock their cupboards for free. Your local library or bookstore will have plenty of books to help you get started, and, of course, the internet is bursting with information. Learn which parts of a plant are edible, which species to avoid and how to prepare and cook your ingredients, and you may find yourself with a new hobby!

Foraging & The Law According to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, permission is required from the landowner before any plants can be picked.

Therefore, it’s usually considered theft to take something from another’s land, but there is an exception in the case of wild plants and mushrooms under the Theft Act 1968, as long as anything taken will not be exchanged for money or reward.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2001 gives people the right to roam on land defined as mountain, moor, heath or registered commons.

The Family Foraging Kitchen The Family Foraging Kitchen is a social enterprise that provides wild food education through foraging walks, cookery classes and courses in traditional countryside craft. A percentage of profit made from their ticketed walks and courses allow them to provide the same service, for free, to those experiencing local food poverty in the community.

Based on the stunning Rame Peninsula, just across the Tamar, their walks and courses include seaweed hunts, hedgerow and woodland foraging, beach cook-ups and cookery demonstrations using the ingredients you’ve collected. Take the kids along they usually go free!

The Family Foraging Kitchen What time of year is best for wild foraging?

This is one of the most popular questions I’m asked and people are always surprised by the answer: ALL YEAR ROUND. Seriously. From the rich greens and wild garlics of spring, edible flowers of early summer that are followed by a hedgerow spice trail of wild seeds, to late summer fruits through to the nuts, roots and fungi of autumn. In the winter we see fresh new greens rising again.

If you can and have one near you, source a reputable wild food teacher to take you through one full year of wild food in your area (we regularly run monthly sessions within our community). This is an educational investment that will allow you to access free food forever, for a lifetime.

Where are the best locations for foraging?

Look to public footpaths, common and park lands, coastal paths, beaches, nature trails, woodlands and even graveyards!

Avoid areas beside really busy roads too (small country lanes are generally okay) and look out for dog faeces - the biggest curse to the wild foodie!

The easiest food to find, pick and prepare for the beginner: Spring: Nettles, dock leaves and wild garlic.

They grow abundantly EVERYWHERE and can be used in any recipe that calls for the use of spinach, chard or cabbage and allow you to be wonderfully creative. They cannot be confused with anything potentially harmful and are one of the highest nutrient-rich wild foods.

All dock leaves are edible and are in the buckwheat family – even their seeds have their uses and are rich in omega oils. Layer the leaves under pasta sheets in a lasagne for a real treat!

Summer: Elderflowers and then elderberries!

The flowers are fantastic dipped into a quick chickpea batter, lightly fried and then dusted in sugar and cinnamon.

They make a nice Vix Hill-Ryder Founder of The Family Foraging Kitchen wine, cordial and champagne too.

The berries can be baked into pastries, cooked into syrup or dried for later use.

Rose petals add a fabulously sweet floral delicacy to summer salads and sweets. All roses are edible, even garden varieties, and can be mild to having a deep, sweet Turkish Delight flavour.

AUTUMN: Chestnuts are our favourite treat, roasted after a long family walk and are such fun to squash carefully out of their prickly shells with a wellie boot.

Rosehips are fat and juicy and can be made into jams, chutneys, sauces and even (from the large Rugsa rose) be used in place of cherry tomatoes!

Winter: Bright yellow gorse flowers are rich in protein, are a natural anti-depressant and lift up any salad on a winter’s day. They have a delicate coconut taste if picked on a sunny day – and taste like young pea pods if not.

Young alexander shoots are commonly found in coastal hedgerows in winter months. The stalks are great chopped-up and fried in a little butter and topped with parma ham (take care with Umbelifiers though and make sure you have 100% ID, as there are some deadly members in this family).

BUSINESS PROFILE Ashley Smith took over H.M. Williams Chartered Accountants last year. We speak to him about how he got to where he is today and his success so far.

It’s a busy time at H.M. Williams – Ashley has gone from employee, to business partner, to owner of the accountancy firm since he joined in 2007. He’s been making a few changes while gaining and maintaining the respect of his loyal team, and the future looks good.

Ashley started out working in a petrol station after he completed his A Levels, and found an advert for a trainee accountant in his local paper where he lived in Cornwall. Having helped his self-employed dad with his books growing up, he was already good at maths and thought, “Why not?”

“So I found myself just before the really busy tax return season – I joined at the end of November – going to this little village practice. The boss was already playing catch-up during a really busy time due to one of his employees being off work, and there were only two people at the practice.”

“I rolled up and he sat me down and explained how it all worked. The role encompassed reception as well as taking bookings for the upstairs practice which was a natural health clinic, which is a little bit different. It was quite useful to head up there the day after the Christmas party!”

Although Ashley had done bookkeeping before, he learnt a lot on the job. His first learning curve was to understand the handwriting of an accountant, which is typically a bumpy scrawl across the page.

“I walked into the office to the same faces and realised that I wanted something more interesting, which is what led me to a bigger firm in Truro. I was there for three years and I dealt with bigger clients and started going out to their premises.”

By this point, Ashley had decided that he’d like to run his own firm one day and, not ready to get comfortable, he checked out the commute from his Cornwall home into Plymouth – it would take the same amount of time as his commute to Truro. He started looking into accountancy firms in the city and landed himself a new role in 2007.

“It was like learning another language, but after six years there I could read it perfectly.”

“I got a job here at H.M. Williams. Hugh [business partner] was in his early sixties and Tim, the other partner, was only a year younger than Hugh. I took the job with the view that if I was good enough I would step up and go from there.”

Over time, Ashley worked on more accounts with more responsibility, and found himself looking elsewhere for a new challenge.

Ashley commuted across the Tamar Bridge for a few months, but anyone who regularly makes that journey will know how tiring and mundane it can become. His wife found herself a job in Plymouth and they commuted together for a while before deciding to move into the city.

Much later, his business partner, Tim, retired in 2013 and Ashley took his place as partner with Hugh. Hugh then went on to retirement and Ashley bought the business to take on as his own. He’s proud of the ethos behind the company and plans to continue its growth.

“The practice has always been a case of trying to look after the clients – we’ve got a couple of consultants which enable us to deal with cases much bigger than you would find in a normal practice of our size – but it’s trying to be a friendly and approachable bunch of people that build up a relationship with clients.”

Ashley is keen to network in Plymouth to secure new business. “It’s quite nice that clients have come through referrals and have stayed with us and don’t change accountants.”

A few things have changed since Ashley took the reins. Hugh didn’t work on a Friday, but Ashley ensures that even if he isn’t in while the office is open he can be contacted via his mobile or email, and there were no timesheets to keep track of the work load. He’s recently introduced these after spotting the need for it while he was an employee, but his main concern was getting on well with the team.

“After being an employee and working my way up there is the line you’re crossing and you sit there and think “I don’t want to fall out with anyone” – I needed

to gain some respect. But it’s been easier than expected because everyone’s like a family here.”

Ashley also cares a lot about supporting local charities. Their nominated charity of the year is Jeremiah’s Journey, so they do what they can to raise funds and awareness for them, and he also works with Twelves Company in Plymouth.

“

Hugh started the firm after buying a farm near Tavistock. He started to help a woman there with her taxes, as well as assisting his family members, and over time learnt enough to enable him to open H.M. Williams in 1973.

Everyone’s like a family here

Ashley also joined the Plymouth Round Table, of which he is the current chairman, after meeting someone involved with it whilst playing golf. The organisation raises money for local charities and gets members involved with a lot of social events, including two 10K races a year in Plympton and travelling around on the Santa Sleigh at Christmas to collect donations, plus he has also managed to squeeze in a few trips abroad with them.

For now, Ashley is looking to progress the business further and push the H.M. Williams name. This seems to be going well for him so far, after being listed on this year’s The Times Top 200 Accountants in the UK. This is down to great reviews left by his clients on the website VouchedFor.co.uk.

“I think it’s all about raising a profile, although we’re a small firm we do things properly,” Ashley explains.

We hope that things continue to move forward for him, in the same way that his career has progressed over the years. He plans to network as much as he can to meet other business owners and potential clients, because, after all, “Plymouth does business with Plymouth.”

After finishing her Bachelors in Biochemistry and Physiology, Thashna wanted to become a cardiac surgeon, however after becoming pregnant she changed career interest to Chiropractic. When she graduated she started working in Plymouth, but after a few set-backs she took a year out. Several of her past patients kept asking when she planned to start practicing again, so she went back to it in her own business.

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES Mike LeGassick has been offering financial advice for over 20 years, but he’s not your standard Independent Financial Advisor...

“People either live too long or die too soon,” Mike LeGassick tells us as he explains his thinking behind his career as a Lifestyle Financial Planner.

“Everything I do comes down to those two things.

People either live too long, and you think “what’s wrong with living too long?” But with no money it’s not living, it’s existing. And if you die too soon or unexpectedly you could leave your family high and dry with no income coming in and everyone’s left to pick up the pieces as well as mourn.”

Mike is Plymouth born-and-bred and started out working in retail when he left school. He knew someone who worked in insurance and was offered a position in the industry – 21 years and countless exams later and he’s still heavily involved with it, and he’s got a good understanding of what his clients really want.

“People aren’t remotely interested in whether this fund is better than that one or if this pension is better than another. This is just industry noise. None of which really matters – they just want to know that they’re never going to run out of money and that they can get from A to B in a way that they can understand, is affordable and makes sense.”

This is why Mike calls himself a ‘Lifestyle’ Financial Planner, rather than a standard IFA. He works with Manning & Company, which is a team of Independent Financial Advisors based near Ivybridge.

He asks his clients about their dreams and the things they’d like to do before they find they no longer can, such as round-the-world trips, taking up new hobbies and challenges they may like to attempt, all those things we have always wanted to do. “The good news is that everybody is living longer, and the bad news is that everybody is living longer.” Although we might now have longer to save, our money needs to last us many more years with people desiring to retire early.

Time also applies to life insurance and many of us question the age at which we should start thinking about it. Most people take out insurance once they’re settled down, perhaps with a house and kids and bigger responsibilities, but this could be expensive if saving money over the long term is important.

Putting money aside to protect our families if the worst happens and for our golden years often means sacrificing a few things. Mike believes he could have retired at the age of 45, had he known at the age of 20 what he knows now simply by going out just a little less and putting away some money a little earlier.

One of his dreams was to write a book – and he’s done it. Due to be released next year, it brings together everything Mike has learnt over his years in business and as an advisor, working with many clients in various circumstances, and he hopes it will help others plan better and avoid making any mistakes when it comes to life and money. Mike does occasionally meet clients who have left everything far too late. “It reminds me of a cartoon I once saw where a client tells his adviser that he intends to retire on Monday, but has saved nothing and says to his adviser that this is his opportunity to become a legend!”

“Part of what I do sometimes is to tell people things they don’t want to hear. But if I don’t do that I’m not doing my job properly and I’m not telling the truth. Worse than that is that I am giving them false hope. Time goes so quickly and before you know it, it’s gone.”

“Some people just exist in retirement, and older people these days sometimes have to choose between heating or eating because not everyone can do both, which is a terrible set of circumstances and a horrible place to be.”

Therefore, most of his clients don’t care about various funds and accounts, they just want to know if they’ll be okay when they reach their older years.

Listening to dogma and naysayers will only bring you down so try to mix with positive, creative people” And if you don’t? “You bury your dreams and aspirations because time moves on and life gets in the way and what was once a burning ambition sadly fades to just a pipedream. Later in life that can turn to regret and you don’t want that.

Mike is incredibly passionate about people getting as much as they possibly can from life and hitting the right work/life balance, and sees his client’s lifestyles and goals without any emotional attachment. For this reason, his advice is practical, understandable and meaningful. Throughout his career he’s helped many people to realise dreams they never thought they could.

While most people enjoy some funfair silliness during their summer holidays, some can be vulnerable to exploitation by fair workers.

Perpetrators may come into contact with young females at funfairs and stay in touch via social media (eg Facebook).

Girls may be introduced by their friends from school or in their social networks to older males.

Victims may already be missing children or vulnerable in some other way.

Parents, carers and teachers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the signs of child sexual exploitation so that appropriate action can be taken to protect young people.

BUSINESS PROFILE Did you know, you can pick up the most sustainable, tasty and nutritious takeaway from Kingfisher Fish and Chips in Plympton? Owners Craig and Nikki and their team have won countless awards and are pushing for more as they aim to become the number one fish and chip shop in the UK. It might sound optimistic but this isn’t entirely out of reach – they’ve already been given second place.

Their awards include the Fish and Chip Quality Award, of which only 250 chip shops in the UK can put their name to. The success has come in thick and fast for Craig and Nikki after they went in for four awards in their first year of opening in 2012, and having been shortlisted for them all, they’ve been motivated to keep at it and to come out on top.

Not only have Kingfisher been shortlisted for Best in the South West and Top 10 in the UK, they’ve also found themselves with the most sustainable fish menu in the world. They have 12 MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified species on offer, all properly sourced and of high quality.

“We didn’t know it at the time when we did it, but it was the most MSC species on a menu anywhere in the world. We thought it might be a UK record, but 12 sits quite nicely and it works well for us. When you enlist a species you have to register it with the Marine Council. All of a sudden we got our 12th one and we got an email back saying “Congratulations, we’d like to market you as the most sustainable fish menu in the world.””

The MCS (Marine Conservation Society, not to be confused with MSC) run a traffic light system to highlight endangered species and this is updated regularly. Therefore, Craig tells us that they “ensure that all of our seafood is kept in the green”, and won’t hesitate to remove a species from the menu if it’s no longer sustainable or if he doesn’t agree with the way it’s being farmed.

“We took cod roe off the menu for example, because we didn’t like the idea of it. It’s not an endangered species, not that it’s a species in its own right, but we didn’t like the way the boats go out farming for cod roe because that is the fish of the future. So we don’t do that, cod roe is not on our menu.

“So far we’ve taken 5 species off our menu, because they’re endangered or not in the green category. We take great pride in that.”

Kingfisher doesn’t always use fish from the Barbican Fish Market like many might expect, as there are simply too many fish and chip shops in Plymouth for the market to supply enough to them all.

“Our fish comes from the cold North East Atlantic, the Arctic waters, where it’s got certification and it’s sold sustainably. What happens is they’ll fish an area and then do regular checks by measuring random sacks

- KINGFISHER FISH & CHIPS of fish from boats which come in. If the percentage of fish is too small they’ll lock that area down to let the stocks grow. It’s really well managed.”

Craig is making a difference for his suppliers too - he recently managed to persuade them to get hold of MSC certified plaice, as they weren’t convinced there was a market for it. In the end they decided to give it a go and it’s been a huge success.

He’d been in the food industry for about 19 years in Sheffield when he answered a call to move to Plymouth and help operate and run a group of six fish and chip shops in and around the city.

We’re pretty certain that Craig and Nikki will soon run out of space on the walls to hang their awards.

Eventually the owner of the business lost interest and Craig took the opportunity to buy Kingfisher, which was run-down and un-loved.

“We changed absolutely everything – we changed the potatoes, we changed the fish…absolutely everything had an upgrade.” Only the name remained the same, but the proud new owners added ‘Fish and Chips’ to the end.

Craig and Nikki only care that their customers receive the best, even refusing to put up prices if outgoings increase as they source better packaging and better quality food.

“It’s never been about the money - that comes as a result. When we first opened the business we set it out that we would always be quality-led.

“We give customers the quality and product and level of service they should be getting, and try to raise fish and chips to a different level. It’s always been about that, not about how much money we can make.”

Reasonable needs – what is justifiable?

A

nne Shears, a Solicitor with The Family Law Company in Plymouth, looks at the way reasonable needs are considered during a divorce.

In a recent judgment, Mrs Justice Roberts awarded £53 million to former supermodel Christina Estrada, who was divorcing her billionaire husband, Sheikh Walid Juffali, after a 12- year marriage.

To date this is the largest ‘needs award’ made by an English Court. The Judge made it clear that this division of the finances was to meet Ms Estrada’s reasonable needs. Taking into account her own resources, Ms Estrada’s settlement is valued in the region of £75 million.

The judge said Ms Estrada described their lifestyle as ‘magical’. The BBC described how she included within her statement of income needs a requirement in excess of 1m a year for clothing. Her list includes: • £40,000 a year for fur coats • £109,000 a year for haute couture dresses • £21,000 a year for shoes Generic application of the judgement Whilst Ms Estrada’s list may seem extreme and the circumstances of this case are far from standard, such a judgment can be applied to those of us with more moderate finances.

In most cases there will only be sufficient financial resources to consider the most basic needs, but this can result in it being justifiable for the Court to depart from a straightforward equal division.

In all cases the Court will be looking to divide finances to meet both of the parties’ requirements.

Generally these are that they both need suitable accommodation and an income. The needs of children are always the first consideration of the Court. The needs of the parties are not looked at in isolation – the Court will take all the circumstances of the case into consideration including the standard of living enjoyed by the family before the breakdown of the marriage.

In looking at each party’s need for accommodation, the Court will take into account any children including their ages and where they are likely to spend the majority of their time. On occasion there will only be enough money for one parent to house with the children and in those circumstances the housing needs of the children will be considered over those of one of the parents.

It is sometimes appropriate for one of the parties to pay to the other a sum of money each month (known as spousal maintenance) to enable them to adjust to the change in their circumstances. The Court will look at this income need, the ability of the paying spouse to pay and, as far as is possible, will aim to make an Order that facilitates the parties achieving independence as soon as they can.

We could talk about St Ives all day - there’s a reason it’s won so many tourism awards and attracts so many famous artists. Its location makes it one of the mildest, sunniest places in the UK, which is reason enough to visit. When you’re not lounging on the golden beaches or testing the surf, the town itself has plenty to offer with lots of shops and great places to eat.

LIZARD Head to the tip of the Lizard and you’ll be standing on mainland England’s most southerly point. With plenty of beautiful beaches, exceptional plants and wildlife and stunning coastal walks, even the most active family will be spoilt for choice. Set up camp on the peninsula and start exploring!

Kynance Cove boasts turquoise water and white sand, or head to the beach at Church Cove, Gunwalloe, where you’ll find the church of St Winwaloe perched next to the waves.

POLZEATH

LOOE

When the tide is out at Polzeath the beach seems endless. This surfer’s playground is popular with families who can find a great spot on the sand even on the busiest days. Treat yourself to lunch at one of the waterfront cafes and restaurants, and keep an eye out for wildlife, as Polzeath is a nature reserve. You might be lucky enough to spot dolphins!

Looe is a great spot for a break from the city, and it’s surrounded by campsites where you can pitch up the tent or rent a caravan. Kids will love the beach and the windy streets are packed with shops which will leave you spoilt for choice. It’s also a great place for foodies, who can choose from a pub lunch, pancakes, fresh seafood and fine dining. Even picky kids will find something they love!

There are some great hotels and stunning cottages to rent in the area, plus campsites for those keen to make the most of the outdoors and fresh, sea air.

If you’re looking for entertainment, head here in September for the impressive Looe Music Festival, with the stage set-up right on the beach.

Pack picnics and search for rivers to swim in, waterfalls to listen to, tors to climb and cosy pubs for a refreshing drink. If time is an issue, save the holiday and head here for a day out instead!

Although Dartmoor is full of campsites and cottages to rent, wild camping is actively encouraged here if you stick to their simple rules and respect the environment. It’s not far from Plymouth so it’s great for kids who aren’t keen on long car journeys and, being such a huge place, you can visit time and time again and keep discovering new, stunning spots.

Summer Potato Salad Make the most of Jersey Royals in this fresh and crunchy side with buttermilk dressing, radishes and cress

Serves 6

750g new potatoes 75ml buttermilk 2 tbsp light mayonnaise 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp white wine vinegar ½ tsp caster sugar 100g sliced radishes 1 tbsp poppy seed 20g pack mustard cress, to serve

Method

1. Put potatoes in a pan of salted water, bring to the boil, then simmer for 12 mins until cooked through. Drain and cool.

Have Fun with the Family on Rainy Days It’s August and we’re hoping for the sun to shine throughout, but of course, we’re prepared for a few days of rain. The kids are off school though and you’re going to need back-up ideas for when the weather is too miserable for them to be running riot outside. Here are a few things to get you started…

Home Bake-Off

Head for a Swim

If the weather outside isn’t particularly summery, fill your home with the smell of bread and cakes and get the kids involved. Plymouth City Library has plenty of cookbooks to choose from, or search for recipes online. If you’re feeling confident, aim to make a range of sweet and savoury and throw a picnic on the living room floor afterwards to eat your creations!

Although the weather might stop you and the family taking a dip in the sea or lido, Plymouth has a few places you can head to if you need a fitness-fix. There is a pool in Plympton at Harewood Park, and The Life Centre might surprise you with the amount of activities they have on offer, with a climbing wall and tennis as well as their Olympic-sized pool.

Embrace it!

Take a Drive Bad weather means the roads along the coast will be less busy, so pack up the car with drinks and sandwiches and head out for a drive.

There are lots of places in Cornwall to park up and admire a beautiful view, regardless of the weather, and there’s nothing cosier than sitting in a warm, dry car while the rain comes down.

It certainly wastes a few hours!

A little rain never hurt anyone, so get the family wrapped up in waterproofs and head out for a stroll around the Barbican or Hoe, or brave the beach if wind and waves aren’t a problem! There will always be a good pub or cosy café to warm up in.
