Now that the summer is over, we can get back to putting the ice back in our drinks and not on our heads!

S

ocial media networks were inundated with images of friends and family pouring water over themselves and like many of you, I got caught up in this summer craze of the “Ice Bucket Challenge” and did the same.

What started as a crazy idea to raise awareness for ALS, which here in Britain is better known as Motor Neuron Disease, has swept the planet with over 2.4 million clips being posted online, which in turn has helped to raised more than £100 million for good causes worldwide, with over £60 Million being raised in Britain alone.

As this one charity saw their charitable donation rise by 50 times their annual income, I wondered how can we, as a community, support our Local Charities best?

Glenn Jordan taking part in I get to meet the Ice Bucket Challenge a lot of people involved with charitable and voluntary organisations across Plympton, which all do amazing jobs and could all do more with extra money. Though it’s not just money some of these organisation need, it is something more valuable; people’s time, knowledge and expertise.

Let me put this into perspective. Without support, Local Community Centres could close 10

as there is no one prepared to help run them or the local sports teams could fold as they don’t have anyone to coach them.

There are lots of different types of charitable organisation you could get involved with in Plympton. From Sports Clubs to Animal Sanctuaries, Youth Groups to Helping the Elderly or Disabled, there is something out there we can all help with.

Many of these organisations work together through Plympton’s Community Council; a voluntary group that support each other with fund raising as well as organising such events as the Plympton Carnival and Plympton Fair.

There is no question that as a nation the British are very generous and caring people. Just look at how much we raise for Children in Need, Red Nose Day and Comic Relief each year, and here in Plympton we have benefited from such generosity.

So if you feel inspired, go and get involved!

You can go to your local community centre or Library, search the internet or call the Plymouth Guild of Volunteers on 01752 201766.

Fundraser challenge for Animal Lovers

A

n animal lover has issued a challenge to like-minded supporters to break her record for collecting ‘Wish List’ items. Pam Medhurst, a volunteer fundraiser at the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust has just passed in 70 bottles of washing up liquid to help clean the charity’s daily mountain of dishes.

Pam says she acquired some bottles through her coffee morning entrance charges but, once word got around, her friends, family and neighbours started leaving them on her Torpoint doorstep too.

“With 200+ unwanted animals at Woodside, and 17 different species to provide for, cleaning feed, water and litter equipment is endless. On one day recently, there were 198 dirty cat items alone and washing up liquid is always on the sanctuary needs list. My challenge is for someone to surpass my total of 70, but for Felix chicken flavour cat food this time. It’s been found to be the most reliable tinned food as it doesn’t upset

fragile digestive systems like some other brands.”

Plymouths local animal charity needs your help!

Gables Farm Cats’ and Dogs’ Home has been helping the region’s dogs and cats since 1907. We look after some 1000 cats and dogs every year. We either rehome or re-unite them with their owners and provide constant veterinary care and attention to all of them during their stay with us. We enforce a strict non-euthanasia policy, which means no healthy animal in our care is put to sleep unless they are seriously ill and suffering or too dangerous to rehome. Some dogs and cats stay with us for a long time but we never give up hope of finding them a new loving home no matter how much it costs! We rehome animals all over Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We receive no Government funding so totally rely on the generosity and support of the public through donations and legacies.

Keep your pets safe during fireworks!

Gables Farm Dogs and Cats Home is urging all pet owners to keep their dogs and cats inside on Fireworks night. A lot of pets get spooked by fireworks and may run away from home as a result.

Tips for keeping your pets safe

If possible you should walk your dog in daylight hours to avoid fireworks. If this is not possible please keep your dog safe and on a lead at all times Both dogs and cats should be kept indoors.

You should also create a den for your pet so that they can hide away if they are scared.

Throughout the whole of October Gables Farm Dogs and Cats Home will be offering microchipping for the reduced price of £10. ring your dog or cat along to the Home between 11am and 3pm any day in October to take advantage of this offer.

Local family gain great success Cleaning up Plympton!

ocal husband and wife team Ken & Leanne Elliott decided to make a complete change to their business lives this year with the introduction of “Mr H Cleaning Services” under their existing company, Certitude Ltd. With the decline of Window Cleaners in the Plympton area over the last 2 years Ken & Leanne have been filling the much needed gap for window and gutter cleaning for both residential and commercial properties in and around Plympton.

“Adding Mr H Cleaning Services in June 2014, was the best thing we’ve done. It’s been a fantastic start to a new chapter in our lives” said Ken “and all the customers have been lovely and welcoming”.

“We are gaining more and more customers based on recommendations and reviews and we’ve changed the expectation since we took on the business; surprisingly some companies only clean the windows and yet the frames are just as important!”

“Being reliable and regular within ALL of the cleaning services we offer...ALL year round, is something we’re being recognized for too” added Ken. “We have widened the area we work in; my wife and business partner Leanne and my Son Ryan have also learnt how to handle the reach and wash system like true professionals!”

Besides the normal regular outside window cleaning, their customers have been taking up the offer of having the insides of the windows done too...the good old fashioned way. “We don’t believe in putting product on top of product” said Ken, it just creates a build up. We’re the same with household cleaning and deep cleaning too, I think Leanne and Mrs Beeton were related!” he added. It’s also been a busy time with our other business “Traumatic Clean Up”, dealing with deeper cleans, hoarding clean ups and road traffic accidents throughout the South West and on a sadder note the specialist cleaning involved

in unexpected deaths. “I love the variation and yet I really enjoy seeing my regular customers too, it’s great advising them on caring for their windows and properties.”

Strawberry Ghosts Ingredients

1 Bar of White Cooking Chocolate 24 Fresh strawberries Mini chocolate chips

Method 1. Place the White Chocolate in bowl and melt in the microwave.

2. Place a large piece of wax or parchment paper on a flat surface.

3. Dip strawberries in melted chocolate, remove and allow the excess chocolate to pour off onto the wax paper to form the “tail” of the ghost; slide the strawberry back and set on wax paper to dry.
