Val's 'joyful' kitchen is a dream come true

I

t’s one thing having a vision for your dream kitchen, it’s another thing entirely to find a firm that will turn your vision into reality. But after seeing the stunning kitchen that Plymouth family firm KF Kitchens designed and fitted for a neighbour, Val from south east Cornwall had every confidence they’d be able to meet her high expectations.

whittled down over time to our final choice. That was nice too, the way we had time and space to make our decisions. We never felt pressurised at all.”

“In fact, they’ve more than met them, they’ve gone beyond them,” said Val.

Val chose a Nolte kitchen in Oak Barolo, with Miele appliances and Silestone worktops, Blanco sink, Quooker tap, and engineered oak flooring. The appliances include a combination conventional oven and steam oven, a warming drawer, and a coffee maker, while the induction hob on the island has an integral extractor.

The journey began with a visit to the firm’s extensive showroom at Faraday Mill and a chat with kitchen designers Nathan and Derinda Damarell. Val then invited Nathan to her home to discuss the design in detail: “Although we had a very clear vision, we wanted Nathan to suggest other possibilities,” which he did.

“We’ve lived here for 10 years and what we had before was totally different,” explained Val.“The sink was in a different place and the island was the other way round and took up a lot of room. By moving the new one around by 90 degrees, it has created a lot of space.”

“He showed us things that we might not have thought about. But we really wanted to do that so we could confidently confirm our original vision. Nathan was more than happy to go along with what we wanted, and he enabled us to create our vision. But equally, if we didn’t have a vision, he would have helped us to create one. Once we had the basic layout and idea, everything was put onto the computer so we could see. We could then see what it would look like with different handles and different colours. We had print-outs of four different options which we put on our old fridge freezer, which we

Further space was freed up by removing part of the wall adjoining the utility room, which has also been renewed by KF Kitchens. This extra space in the kitchen is now home to the integrated fridge, freezer, and wine conditioner: “The reorganisation makes the room a lot bigger,” said Val,“and when I’m cooking, everything now feels ergonomically correct. It’s revolutionised how I cook.”

6

The new appliances have also changed the way she cooks. KF Kitchens arranged for Val to go to the Miele Experience in London, and she said: “We were cooked a three-course meal by the chef, to show us

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

the possibilities of Miele ovens, and the food was beautiful. The experience made me re-look at how I cook and what I need and don’t need in the kitchen. It’s given me a different mindset. I absolutely love the steam oven, that’s been eye-opening. I’d never have thought about having a steam oven but now, I use it all the time.” The new kitchen has also made a big difference to how she uses the space: “We are spending much more time in the kitchen, and it’s actually a joy to cook. And we’ve future-proofed ourselves. It’s not just the quality of the kitchen and the appliances. Economically, because the appliances are energy-efficient, I’ve noticed the difference when I check the smart-meter.” All the work was done by the skilled contractors that KF Kitchens have worked with over many years and Val said: “They were wonderful. It was actually a pleasure having them here in our home. Nothing was a problem, whatever we asked, Nathan said ‘yes, we can do that’ or ‘my team can do anything’. They were flexible and happy to fit in with us. For example, the fitters, Kevin and Wayne, custom-made a cupboard for us to house our boiler in the utility room, and they came up with a solution when we said we wanted to fill in the space between the oven units and the ceiling. Nathan and Dee made the whole experience fun, and all their team were excellent.” So, if she had three words to sum up her new kitchen what would they be? “Beautiful, up-market, practical. Oh, and can I have a fourth word? Because what I think really sums it up is ‘joyful’. Every morning, I come in here and I smile.” And would she recommend KF Kitchens to other people looking for a “joyful” kitchen? “Absolutely. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. In fact, I already have recommended them!” KF Kitchens is an ambitious, local, family business that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in a kitchen. From the moment you walk through the door of their studio, everything becomes possible and available to you, to achieve your dream kitchen. How is this possible? Plymouth Advice and Support Service (PASS)

Lee Grant, Director of PASS

filling in a form or chatroom helplines. Lee’s objective is to help those who aren’t confident with their way around the internet and the digital world, who need help filling in forms, writing complaint letters, benefit applications or helping to fill in Small Claims court forms on behalf of those in need.

Seeing a gap in the market, Lee Grant has created a unique service that provides comprehensive support and guidance to individuals navigating the complexities of dealing with organisations. This innovative venture is family run and seeks to ensure people receive a fair and highly personalised service.

H

aving had an extensive professional background spanning 25 years in the NHS, Lee’s expertise lies primarily in Operational and Project Management and Procurement which by definition means negotiating terms with various organisations, including writing tenders to bid for projects and contracts. Lee has written successful tender bids in both the NHS and private commercial sectors. This breadth of experience, including being Head of Communications and PR at an NHS Trust, a GP practice manager as well as in Crisis Management has equipped Lee with a deep understanding of how large organisations work and the ability to navigate complex and challenging scenarios. “PASS stands as a testament to the power of personalised support and empathy for those that need it. It will support them every step of the way”

Taking a leap of faith, Lee decided to step away from the security of NHS employment to create Plymouth Advice and Support Service (PASS) to be the solution he feels is so desperately needed. This passion has stemmed from supporting a close relative, who suffers with a long-standing mental health condition. They had come into contact with multiple services over the years who didn’t provide the help and answers required. This was where Lee had a light bulb moment and recognised the lack of support for those who do not have a support network to help and guide them when trying to deal with organisations. Technology is dominating the way things are handled these days, with more and more things you can only do online, whether that’s booking a doctor’s appointment,

10

The objective is clear—to bridge the gap for those in need of personalised support. “If you find yourself banging your head against the wall or are not sure where to start, let PASS be your friend and support” PASS offers support, guidance and expertise to people dealing with any organisation; Sky, HMRC, your local Council, BT, your GP Practice, the NHS, utility companies; it really is anything and anybody! If you believe you’re eligible to claim a benefit but the rigmarole of trying to find and complete the claims form is putting you off, then Lee can assist with filling in the paperwork. Recognising that some people get stressed with form filling and especially online forms, Lee offers a unique home visit service. The home visits are a valuable option Lee wanted to bring into this service as there are many factors he’s considered as to why people will need help; their age, physical or learning disabilities and there are a lot of people who aren’t tech savvy. A home visit of up to two hours can be used to help complete important letters, sitting in and supporting if you’re having a benefits assessment or even if you have an important or difficult telephone call; Lee will be the moral support and the hand you hold through it. A home visit with one letter starts from just £69, which includes the research, phone calls, production of the letter and of course, the home visit. Home visits are

available in Plymouth and surrounding areas although geographically, PASS can offer advice across the South West and beyond, showcasing Lee’s willingness to go the extra mile to provide invaluable assistance. All staff have a clean DBS check which means they are cleared to work with vulnerable adults. “A commitment to personalised, in-person support, sets PASS apart in a digital age” In whatever way you want to use PASS, the first thing will be to ascertain the issue at hand, what’s happened so far and discover the desired outcome you’d like. Initial contact with PASS is not only straightforward but also free of charge, allowing individuals to assess their needs and determine if there is common ground to move forward. There are many ways to get in touch with the Plymouth Advice and Support Service which are via email, Facebook, the website or by telephone which is contactable 7 days a week.

service, advocacy and opening up opportunities. These values serve as the backbone of the service, allowing it to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those it serves. It’s very early days for PASS as the service was only launched in November 2023, but there are already agreements in place with a number of agencies for PASS to help the clients that they are unable to see. As the service grows and evolves, Lee will remain committed to making a positive difference in the lives of individuals facing the challenges of dealing with organisations. “If in doubt, just give me a no obligation call and we will see if there’s something I can help with.”

Prices

People who are already within the care or support of a statutory organisation may be eligible for funding to use PASS and would need to check with their provider. There are pots and funding for this kind of help which was something Lee had discovered when dealing with a client who was referred to him by another organisation.

Plymouth Market is an iconic indoor market, popular with locals and tourists but often people are unaware of what’s inside. The Market has a huge range of traders, old and new, all from local people offering a very personal service and something unquie. Come and meet some of your local traders.

T

he 36,000 sq. ft Grade II listed Market hall, complete with its unusually waved roof, is best appreciated in person to understand the beauty of the building and what’s inside. Open six days a week, Plymouth Market is the perfect destination to browse and find a bargain, relax and refuel with award-winning food stalls and you can even end the day pampering yourself at the therapy/ beauty stalls. Located in Plymouth’s West End there is over 140 stalls, eateries and cafes and we were lucky enough to meet 14 of them!

“There’s something for everyone – what will you discover?” Coronet Engravers, a shop that has remained in the same spot since 1959, but was taken over by Leigh and his partner Claire in 2010. The couple had already been working at the Leigh, Corone t Engravers engravers since 1998, so when the opportunity came knocking, they couldn’t resist and have doubled in size since ownership.

14

Whilst offering bespoke engraving, jewellery and watch repairs, Coronet Engravers also offer a large range of trophies, signs and plaques for all occasions which can be individually tailored to your needs. They also offer to source and make specific items for customers too. Leigh and Claire have seen many changes in the market over the years but what they enjoy most is the amount of niche brands and fabric stalls available. Visit their website: www.coronetengravers.com Previously known as Slippers, Adam and Heidi bought the stall from the previous owners 18 years ago and have expanded the size and stock range. Around about 15 years ago, the duo introduced Adam & Heidi, AHF Workwear steel-toed boots as it was heavily requested by workmen working in the area and soon enough, they leaned into the new venture and offered a range of workwear. This then led to the rebranding, AHF Workwear | Slippers. Of course, staying true to the stall’s origin, Adam and Heidi still stock and sell slippers, with their most

popular product being their handmade Moccasin slippers, which are made in the UK. They are the only place in Plymouth that sells these beautifully handcrafted slippers and they are one in only four places in the whole country! Interesteing fact: Adam has been working in Plymouth Market since he was just 10 years old. He started out working in the stall directly opposite in his mum and dad’s store, The Bookstore. Florists

Petals Florist has been an integral part of the Plymouth Market for the last 22 years. Shirley began her floristry journey back in 1986 in the local Co-op stall, Petals, which sadly closed in January 2001.

Petals, however, remained and continued to flourish and relocated as an independent shop in the market. Choosing the market as their base to continue the thriving business made sense as the rent is reasonable and there is security circulating the premises which makes it a safer place. Offering an extensive selection of fresh flower arrangements & bouquets, they can create something beautiful for any occasion such as Weddings, Funerals, Birthdays and more or if you’re after something similar, they offer fresh bunches of flowers. Visit their website: www.petals-florist.co.uk In 2014, trained florist, Matthew was looking for a career change when he just so happened to see The Nut House advised for sale. Taking a leap of faith, Matthew swapped his

floristry scissors for nut assortments and hasn’t looked back. Wanting to expand and diversify the stall, he made the exceptional choice of incorporating an extensive range of chocolate and sweets, including, a wide variety of chocolate-covered nuts, liquorice, Turkish Delights, boiled sweets, and the list goes on. But the most popular of all and an irresistible smell to match are the Honey Cashews and Honey Cinnamon cashews. We asked Matthew what are the hidden gems of the market and without any hesitation, for him, it has to be the fantastic selection of food stalls offered. Visit their website: www.bryantfoods.co.uk Mother and daughter duo, Karen and Sarah, joined forces to embark on a journey together in the world of business. Keeping to the core of the original stall, they still offer bespoke walking sticks which are measured, cut and adjusted to meet the needs of the customer. They have also added further accessories to the stall such as an impressive range of over 30 different wallets, seasonal hats and a large variety of handbags. Previously a chef at Fletchers, Jodie explains how her Grandmother taught her from a very early age how to cook authentic Mauritian cuisine, “I’m doing this for her.” The plan was to start off in the market, build a good reputation and move into a food van, but since Jodie’s success so far, the goal is now to have a restaurant. The chicken curry is always the firm favourite for many of the customers but Jodie also offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Jodie’s hidden gem in the market is the artistic work of James Fletcher and his stall Art of Polaris.

health & wellBEING Health and wellness tips and ideas to help overcome the January blues. Sponsored by Space To Move.

J

anuary doesn’t tend to have the most positive of reputations; the festive period is over, we perhaps feel we ‘ate too much’ or concerned about our finances, but I just want to remind you about the great things that January can offer. It can offer excitement as we can think about the year we have ahead, setting our goals and intentions. This is also a great time to practise gratitude and appreciate this season of your life.

So let’s take back the power and ignore the negative spiral the media will have you believe so you end buying to give you ‘quick fixes.’ By all means, I am no expert, but I do truly trust that shifting your outlook into a positive light, can have huge benefits for your mental health. January 15th has been named, ‘Blue Monday’ as it’s considered the most depressing day of the year, but I say we change that definition. How about, we call it ‘Blue Monday’ to signify the water. Did you know that one in eight adults in the UK feel tired all the time? And do you know one the best way to combat fatigue? Through natural energy boosters, like swimming. Dipping into the sea when it’s calm, or opting for a cold shower is proven to have significant health benefits. Not only is it great for your blood circulation, it also enables you to completely forget about whatever is on your mind as you deal with the plunge temperatures. The goal during every dip is to control your breathing which should be possible in less than a minute after the initial shock has passed. Having a cold-water shower or dip a few times a week will make the affects of the cold water less extreme as your body acclimatises. Immersion in cold water can be lifethreatening so ease yourself in gradually and focus on calming down your breathing. Always bring someone with you if you are planning on going into wild waters.

extremely important to take regular digital detox’s. In a digital world, where we’re so easily contactable (which has its benefits) but also so easily distracted and get sucked into a world of information overload. There are many studies that have shown an increase in anxiety and depression through over consumption of social media so take a digital detox. Delete some apps and declutter your phone or better yet, switch off you phone completely and fully be present in the moment, take yourself on a beautiful walk around Saltram, Plymbridge woods or Bellever Forest. Scientific reports confirm that spending time in nature improves concentration, reduces stress, anger and anxiety and improves your physical health! Taking care of your physical health has huge benefits to your mental wellbeing. Starting a new fitness regime, taking up a new hobby or challenging yourself physically will not only allow you to maintain a healthy weight and improve your cardiovascular health but it also improves your brain health too. There are hundreds of sports classes, gyms and health and wellbeing centres like Space To Move, in and around Plymouth to suit everybody’s requirements. Your fitness journey is only half complete if you are slacking with your diet. The word ‘diet’ shouldn’t be something viewed as negative or a punishment, it’s a lifestyle choice. Eating and being conscious about

putting the right things in the body shouldn’t be classed as a diet, it’s giving our body the nutrients to operate properly and be healthy. Habits take time to form, so rather then putting lots of pressure on yourself to like X,Y and Z, think about making small changes where you can to your existing diet and introduce things slowly. It’s important to have the right amount of protein and carbohydrates in addition to exercise. Depending on your BMI and the amount of exercise you do will determine how much protein and carbohydrates you should be eating. It has been proven that ‘people who consumed a diet rich in fruits and vegetables reported a more positive psychological state and were less likely to have symptoms of depression, stress, and anxiety compared to those who do not eat these nutrient-rich foods as regularly.’ Sleep is so imperative when it comes to our health and wellbeing, not only does it give us the energy to navigate through our busy days but it’s important for our overall health and skin. We all know that we need at least 7+ hours of sleep a night, but it’s not just about the hours we clock, it’s down to the quality too. This means that any screen-related activities such as your phone or an iPad are a big no no if you’re wanting a sound night sleep. It’s recommended to switch these off at least an hour before bedtime to give our brains a chance to wind down. Instead perhaps try and read a book, practise some quiet mediation or even a gentle slow yoga practise.

Economic Challenges in 2024: How to Navigate Financial Challenges, Thrive Financially and Retire Comfortably A Happy New year to you! I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed the festive season. It soon comes and goes, and we all must turn our attention to what the new year holds for us all.

A

s we step into the new year, the economic landscape in the United Kingdom continues to be defined by austerity measures, economic uncertainties, and the ever-increasing cost of living. In such challenging times, it is essential for individuals and families to adopt smart money-saving strategies to navigate through the financial challenges that lie ahead. This article explores practical and effective money-saving ideas for the new year, helping you achieve financial resilience amidst the ongoing austerity. Additionally, for those aged 55 and above, we will discuss how you might tap into your pensions to ease financial burdens. Lastly, we’ll introduce an exciting resource. My new book: Mind Over Markets - Uncovering Truths, Overcoming Biases, and How to Ensure a Comfortable Retirement, has been written to enhance your financial knowledge and help you secure your financial future. Here are my top money saving tips for 2024:

Create a Budget and Stick to it One of the fundamental steps towards effective money management is creating a budget. Start by listing your monthly income and expenses. Be meticulous in tracking every pound you spend. This will help you identify areas where you can cut back and allocate more funds to essential expenses like rent or mortgage, utilities, and groceries. Stick to your budget religiously to avoid overspending and accumulate savings.

28

Embrace Frugal Living Austerity often requires a shift towards a more frugal lifestyle. Evaluate your spending habits and identify areas where you can make cuts without sacrificing your quality of life. Consider cooking at home more often, reducing dining out, and finding cost-effective alternatives for entertainment and leisure activities. By embracing frugality, you can save a significant amount of money over the year.

Shop Smartly When it comes to groceries and shopping, adopting savvy strategies can help you save substantially. Start by making a shopping list before heading to the store and stick to it. Look for discounts, use coupons, and take advantage of cashback offers and loyalty programs. Additionally, consider buying generic or store-brand products instead of premium brands for non-essential items. Regularly visit Martin Lewis’s Money Saving Expert website to see all the latest savings available for consumers.

Reduce Utility Costs Utility bills can be a significant drain on your finances. Lower your energy consumption by investing in energy-efficient appliances, turning off lights and appliances when not in use, and insulating your home. Consider switching to a more affordable utility provider or negotiating a better deal with your current one. Small changes can lead to significant savings on your monthly bills.

with high-interest rates as quickly as possible. Consider consolidating your debt into a lower-interest loan if it makes financial sense. This will free up more money for savings and reduce the overall cost of your debt. The Money Saving Expert website has all the latest interest free credit card deals available.

Explore Additional Income Streams

Review and Adjust Insurance Policies Take the time to review your insurance policies, including home, auto, and health and life insurance. Shop around for better deals and consider raising deductibles to lower your premium costs. Sometimes bundling policies with one provider can result in discounts. Ensure that your insurance coverage meets your actual needs while being cost-effective.

Cut Down on Transportation Costs Transportation expenses, including fuel, public transport, and car maintenance, can add up quickly. If possible, use public transport or carpool to work to reduce fuel costs. Consider downsizing to a more fuel-efficient vehicle or using a bike or walking for short trips. Regularly maintain your vehicle to prevent costly repairs in the long run.

Set Up an Emergency Fund Building an emergency fund is crucial to financial resilience. Even in austere times, unexpected expenses can arise. I know that this is difficult, if not impossible for many, but aim to save at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a separate savings account. Having this buffer can prevent you from going into debt when faced with emergencies. Imagine the feeling of knowing you can meet all your monthly outgoings for at least the next 6 months without having to borrow.

Reduce Debt and Interest Payments High-interest debt can be a significant burden. Make it a priority to pay off credit card balances and loans

In today’s economy and the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), there are various opportunities to earn extra income. Consider freelancing, part-time work, or selling unused items online to boost your finances. Every additional pound earned can contribute to your financial stability and savings goals. The everincreasing abundance of AI tools can help you build a business from home. Go onto YouTube to get some ideas and inspiration.

Monitor and Adjust Your Financial Goals Regularly review your financial goals and adjust them as needed. As your financial situation evolves, your priorities may change. Keep your goals realistic and flexible to adapt to unexpected challenges or opportunities.

Tapping into Pensions for Financial Relief For those aged 55 and above, there may be an opportunity to ease financial burdens by tapping into any pensions you have accumulated over the years. Pensions can provide a valuable source of income, especially during challenging economic times. It’s essential to explore the options available to you, such as taking a lump sum, drawing a regular income, or a combination of both. Consulting with a financial advisor can help you make informed decisions regarding your pension funds and how to best utilise them to alleviate financial stress.

strategies and options for those over 55, let’s delve into an exciting resource that can further enhance your financial knowledge and help you become a smarter investor and achieve a comfortable retirement. I am thrilled to introduce my new book, Mind Over Markets - Uncovering Truths, Overcoming Biases and How to Ensure a Comfortable Retirement. This book serves as your comprehensive guide, unveiling the essential principles and key insights that every investor should know. Whether you’re a novice embarking on your investment journey or a seasoned investor seeking to refine your strategies, this resource equips you with the knowledge to navigate the complex landscape of investing successfully. Successful investing is about managing risk and your appetite for volatility, not avoiding it. It’s not necessarily about making good decisions but consistently avoiding self-sabotage and staying on track with your plan. Your personal experiences around money and investing represent a minuscule fraction of global financial activities, but they profoundly influence how you perceive and interact with the financial world. In the realm of finance and investing, it is not uncommon for individuals to carry a figurative bag filled with “M&Ms.” These M&Ms aren’t the tasty chocolate treats. These M&Ms symbolise the myths, misconceptions, and misunderstandings that often cloud our understanding and decision-making processes. To secure your financial future, it is crucial to delve deep and unravel the truth behind these beliefs. Within the pages of “Mind Over Markets,” you will uncover a wealth of wisdom encompassing a wide range of vital investment concepts. From the significance of cost efficiency and embracing simplicity to the importance of global diversification, we delve into the principles driving successful investment strategies. Understanding these fundamental principles empowers you to make informed decisions, optimise your returns, and effectively navigate challenges. Human behaviour plays a pivotal role in investing. We explore the concept of behavioural biases, shedding light on how emotions and cognitive shortcuts

can impact investment decisions. Armed with this knowledge, you will learn to recognise and overcome these biases, enabling you to make rational choices that align with your long-term financial goals. Additionally, this book demystifies the concept of risk in investing. By equipping you with the tools to assess and manage risk effectively, you gain the confidence to navigate volatile markets and make calculated decisions. We also highlight the power of compounding and its profound impact on wealth creation, emphasising the importance of adopting a long-term perspective and exercising patience. Recognising the influence of inflation, we explore strategies to mitigate its effects and safeguard your wealth. Throughout “Mind Over Markets,” I employ vivid analogies and relatable examples, such as the M&M analogy mentioned earlier, to enhance comprehension and make complex ideas more accessible. It is crucial to acknowledge that investing is not a onesize-fits-all endeavour. While this book provides a solid foundation, it is essential to recognise your unique circumstances, risk profile, volatility tolerance level, and financial objectives. Tailoring these principles to your specific needs enables you to create a personalised investment strategy that aligns with your goals. As you embark on this transformative journey with “Mind Over Markets,” remember that investing is a continuous learning process. The evolving financial landscape requires curiosity, adaptability, and openness to new ideas. Cultivating a mindset of continuous improvement sets the stage for long-term success. Prepare for a journey of discovery where you dispel

prosperous future. Remember that financial resilience is not about avoiding challenges but navigating them effectively with the right strategies and mindset.

Navigating the Path Forward In conclusion, as we continue to face the challenges of austerity measures and economic uncertainties in 2024, it is crucial to adopt smart money-saving strategies, manage your finances wisely, and explore opportunities like tapping into pensions for those over 55. Furthermore, “Mind Over Markets” offers a valuable resource for enhancing your financial knowledge, making informed investment decisions, and securing a comfortable retirement. Financial resilience is not an overnight achievement but a journey that requires dedication and discipline.
