Wow, I think we can all agree we’ve been blessed with beautiful weather in June, what a scorcher! Let’s hope July can follow in those footsteps, although, when you have skin like a vampire such as myself, I tend to enjoy those warm rays concealed in a shaded spot. However, I can’t help but succumb to what that summer sun does to me, opting for iced coffees, long evening walks, adorning my home with fresh flowers and even reconfiguring my apartment interiors. It’s not just me, right?

This month, we’re all about the more-is-more on page 8 with the enlisted help from an interior designer. We’re talking bright, bold and even metallics. Yes, this month we are truly scratching that colourful itch - think of it like a mosquito bite but interior design.

Whilst July can be seen as the penultimate month for summer, we’re also reminded to live a little more consciously this month and do what we can to reduce our plastic usage. Schools are also out for summer (oh-to have been a teacher) and for some, it’s out forever and Plymouth have lots of further education and organisations to help the youth of our community build their skills.

There’s much happening in our beautiful city this month and I can’t wait for you to enjoy July’s issue.

Go BoLD AND MAXIMALISE

this month we’re bringing the colours of summer indoors and championing all things bold, bright and joyful. We’ve teamed up with local interior designer Kate Norcott to get the do’s and don’ts in creating a completely unique home.

If you’d consider yourself a less-is-more aesthetic type of person, look away now, things are about to get very offensive for your eyes. If you’re a more-is-more type of person, then welcome and let’s gaze through the lens of colour, pattern and layers and celebrate the excess of maximalism.

over the last decade, the interior design trend of maximalism has been making its way up the ranks and we’ve really started to see homes embrace the bold in the last couple of years. maybe that time we had to spend indoors summoned people to evaluate their style and decided that perhaps the four white walls in every room and being surrounded by generic flatpack furniture didn’t quite hit the nail on the head.

The great thing about this trend is it’s a fantastic opportunity to express your own personal style and personality, it’s a celebration of everything you love and it comes from the heart making your home wholly unique to you. The spirit of maximalism encourages the bold choices of going wall-to-wall with leopard print wallpaper, combining animal, floral and geometric prints or opting for the teal colour kitchen cabinets with ornate handles, she wants to bring you to the dark side and break all the rules.

Of course, there is a fine line of overdecorating, cluttering or a dizzyingly busy design, easily done, we’re excited, right? We need to map out our own maximalist meter and know when we’ve gone too far and when it’s time to stop. this wouldn’t be om magazine if we didn’t provide you with some helpful design tips and advice. We’ve even enlisted the help of local interior designer kate norcott

from kate norcott Designs. never say we don’t look after you.

BE BOLD

Because let’s be real here, we’re not here to keep it subtle. The first point of call, picking the colours, “Create a bold and vibrant colour pallet on a mood board, this will help keep the intention of the design and not allow it to become “messy” sticking with those colours” says kate. examples of complimentary clashes could be green and pink, orange and blue or yellow and purple, the best advice? take a look at a colour wheel and generally chose opposing colours to create the impact. you then have the freedom to mix plenty of different styles and patterns with the confidence that the colour scheme will help tie it all together. “use metallics and brightly coloured furniture … Be brave! Be Bold,“ advises norcott.

UPCYCLING

“Upcycling is a passion of mine,” Norcott notes, “Adding an acid yellow or neon orange lacquered paint or even gold leafing to a sideboard or bedroom wardrobe will create that ‘wow factor’ statement piece that you can build your room around.” this isn’t an ‘out with the old and in with the new’ approach. one of the key ingredients in this style is mixing old and new giving something new life and it doesn’t need to break the bank or cost the earth. Facebook marketplace is an absolute treasure chest full of beautiful old pieces waiting to be the centre of attention in your home.

THe Power of PaTTern

This style of interior design is all about commanding attention, nothing says ‘I’m a master of maximalism’ quite like blending patterns and scales to achieve the look. “Think geometric and floral wallpapers, animal prints [and] layering fabrics” Norcott explains. Adding in some plain surfaces like a painted wall, a sofa or even a plain rug will help to break it all up. “Start slow by picking a few patterns you like and mix together accent pillows, rugs and a wallpaper to build your confidence,” adds Norcott, “you can create impact with gallery walls of artwork and photography.”

aLL eYeS on Me

When creating your own interior style it’s important to create a strong focal point. Now, to help diminish those worries about creating a busy room, a great rule of thumb is to have somewhere for the eye to rest. This could be in the form of an opulent set of drawers that you inherited or found at a flea market or a bright canary yellow sofa which could be the bold contrasting colour in the room.

InSPIraTIon

OK, so you have the basics down but it always helps to look at examples to draw inspiration from. Firstly, what kind of style are you? Are you more of the countryside motif? Or are you more of the Palm Springs glamour?

Perhaps you lean more into the Art Deco opulence. Whatever it is, there will be a catalogue of examples on the internet to give you some artistic spark. Pinterest is a great app to use with plenty of pleasing examples. Finding interior designers who resonate aesthetically with you is a great place to start. Some brilliant maximalist interior designers are Sophie Robinson, Kate Norcott, Johanna Franks, Siobhan Murphy, Cotty Lee and Angel Adoree.

If you’re looking for those statement pieces to start your maximalist journey, some places I’d recommend is TK Max as they tend to have some fantastic ornate pieces and accessories. Love frankie, which is based in Totnes, is the definition of bold and brave. Here you’ll find statement lighting and handmade lampshades as well as an eclectic selection of textiles, murals and adornments. Let’s not forget about those good old charity shops. They are full of hidden treasures that, when paired with the right furnishings, can really make an impact in your home.

The beauty of choosing maximalism for your interior is that it’s never finished, after all, it’s about the journey not the destination. The style is one not to be rushed,

it’s an organic process by adding inherited pieces that sit in the loft or a collection of cushions built up over time, even trinkets from past holidays or your children’s/grandchildren’s craft projects. It’s a showcase of everything you love over time.

If you’re thinking about going maximalist then you have to be ready to fully commit, the style won’t work by just dipping your toe in, you have to cannonball straight in. Be brave, you won’t regret it.

Still feeling like you could use some help? Contact Kate from Kate Norcott Designs to discuss your interior dreams and allow her creativity, passion and flare for upcycling vintage pieces to make them

plastic free july

Become a part of the solution by refusing single-use plastics this July (and beyond!) Plastic Free July is a worldwide movement to encourage people to make the swaps from single-use plastic to reusable so we can have cleaner oceans, streets and a healthier planet.

The challenge is simple and available to everyone. All you need to do to be a part of the change is refuse singleuse plastics and opt for sustainable alternatives. Once you apply to take part, Plastic Free July will offer ideas and resources to guide you in your challenge to better the planet.

The best part of this challenge is that by making these small changes every day for one month, they are more likely to become life-long habits.

Supermarkets are designed for your convenience and plastic happens to be one of the most convenient materials in the world. Plastic packaging is durable, long-lasting, cheap to produce, helps protect and preserve foods and is fairly light in weight which means transportation is faster. although plastic has many positives that enrich our lives, our planet is suffering because of it. Durable and long-lasting means we will never see it decompose within our lifetime. if we are all using plastic that cannot be recycled, you can begin to

see how much plastic can build up over just one year.

In fact, in the UK alone, we collectively throw away 295 billion pieces of plastic every year and the majority of it is single-use meaning it cannot get recycled.

a lot of the plastic we throw away ends up in our oceans in a few different forms. Fishing materials are the biggest polluter of our oceans which was a topic widely talked about on the Netflix documentary ‘Seaspiracy’. Well worth the watch! The rest is made up of our personal plastic waste that we can all help to reduce. not all plastics are visible, a lot of the ocean is made up of microplastics that are consumed by fish which are then consumed by us. It is very easy to think, ‘if it doesn’t affect me then i don’t need to worry about it.’ However, if you are a consumer of fish, you are digesting plastic yourself. Microplastics are usually a product of washing clothes in a washing machine. There are alternatives you can use to help stop microplastics from entering

the ocean like buying fewer clothes or buying materials that don’t shed as many microfibres, hang your clothes out to dry, or you can purchase products that are designed to collect the microplastics in the washing machine for example ‘Hairy Ballz’!

HOw tO lIve PlAstIc-Free

Reusable water bottles and coffee cups are becoming increasingly more popular and easier to find. cafes and coffee shops all offer their own reusable alternatives that you can purchase in-store instead of disposable paper cups. a lot of people mistake the paper cup for paper or cardboard however, disposable paper cups are lined with plastic to stop the drink from leaking. Try to resist the urge and wait until you can sit down at a café and order a drink in a durable mug or glass. if you think you may be tempted by a coffee in the day, pop your re-usable coffee cup in your bag just in case you might want to use it later on in the day.

chilly’s bottles are not only beautifully designed with loads of different patterns and colours to choose from but they also keep your drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours! i have personally tested this out and left the bottle in a hot car all day and the water was just as cold as when it entered the bottle hours before.

In the UK, we are fortunate to have safe drinking water, straight from the tap. Many countries aren’t blessed with this privilege that we often take for granted.

12 OMPlYMOuTHMagazinE.cO.uk

Always bring reusable bags. You never know when you might need a shopping bag if you’re out and about so it’s always best to keep one in your bag at all times. Shopping bags don’t have to take up much room in your bag or pocket. You can purchase collapsible shopping bags that compress into their own sack and can be the size of a small wallet or tennis ball. Very useful for popping out to grab a few things.

Being able to live plastic-free comes from being prepared. This is a good life lesson to learn because in day-today life when you are prepared, you are less likely to be late and make mistakes. Being prepared within the plastic-free world means making your lunch the night before or waking up early to make them in the morning. Put the contents of your packed lunch into a re-usable container then you won’t need to pop out for lunch and feel tempted by the convenient plastic packaging. If you have made something that needs to be wrapped up, avoid cling-film and opt for a sustainable alternative such as beeswax wraps.

Being prepared also comes down to your food shops and knowing what meals you want to have during the week. Make sure you check the useby dates and cook the foods which have the earliest use-by dates first. Becoming plastic-free means you may have to shop around instead of grabbing everything in one supermarket.

RefIll shoPs aRe youR new suPeRmaRkeTs

Refill shops are brilliant for getting your dried foods such as; pasta, lentils, nuts, rice, grains, dried fruit, flour etc. Simply bring your re-usable containers and jars with you and weigh the produce as you go! In a lot of refill shops, they will often sell eco-friendly alternatives such as recycled or bamboo toilet rolls, soap and shampoo bars, metal straws, wooden dish scrubs and much more.

Frozen goods are a tricky one to avoid plastic-free packaging. I have noticed Endsleigh Garden Centre offer a packaging-free frozen section where you can bring in your own reusable containers and fill them up with frozen goods. The items are priced on the weight of the food, not including your container.

Grocers and farmers markets are a great way to purchase delicious fresh local produce without any plastic involved. Most markets don’t even put the stickers on the fruit and veg! Berries and small loose fruit and veg are often packaged in plastic containers which can be brought back to the vendor to be re-used. This cannot be done in supermarkets.

fruit and veg boxes delivered directly to your door are usually plastic-free. Check with the supplier first, it should advertise that they are plastic-free on their website or social media however if you are unsure, you can always enquire. fruit and veg boxes are a great way to explore new in-season produce which encourages you to experiment with your cooking and expand your healthy diet.

You may notice your food bills increasing slightly over the month however, the re-usable swaps that you make will help to reduce the costs over time. Local produce tends to be a bit more expensive compared to supermarkets however, you will know exactly where it has come from, how it was produced, what’s gone into it and how far it has travelled to get to your plate. These are all huge benefits to your health as well as the planet and the local economy.

international friendship day

A whole day designated to celebrating and cherishing friendships? It’s a yes from us.

It’s time to take a step back and truly be thankful for our wonderful friends, whether it’s a new friendship or ones that are 30+ years old. A bond where we feel understood and heard, share memories or stories, learn from, and be silly with, July 30th is all about the togetherness of us and our friends.

But first, here are some fun facts about friendships;

- “Friends” first hit our televisions in 1994

- People are 36% more likely to quit a habit if their friend quits to

- Babies can start recognising friendships at just 9 months old

- Around 57% of teens make close friends online

- 22% of people who have a close network of friends live longer

There are many things we can do to celebrate, you may already have your plans and traditions for the day but in true OM fashion, we’ve got some ideas for you.

Send it in the PoSt

The South West is a beautiful part of the country to live but it also, at times, can feel very far away from a lot of places and people. Why not send some lovely cards or a beautiful letter with some thoughtful words letting them know you’re thinking of them. If you’d like to make it extra special, why not get creative and make your own cards or, if cutting and sticking isn’t your thing, then Etsy.com/uk is a great option. They have a large variety of handmade cards that would make the perfect memento.

enJoy A Show

A treat that I really enjoy and ask myself why I don’t do it more often is going to the Theatre. There’s nothing like getting dressed up and heading down to the Theatre Royal to enjoy a fantastic production. It’s always a great evening out and a perfect way to make memories with your friends. Perhaps a couple of glasses of something fancy and some ice cream at the interval wouldn’t go a miss either?

Let’S get CrAfty

The Royal William Yard is never in short supply of things to do, particularly at the Ocean Studios. Not only do they have a café with lots of food, drinks and delicious cakes but they also have a large variety of creative classes to take part in. Why not try the Print & Prosecco evening on 12th July or Lino Printing for beginners, there are also Sewing and Screenprinting workshops too if you’d like to take up a new hobby together or brush up on your skills.

CAtCh A Movie

Whilst we’re on the topic of The Royal William Yard, let’s talk about the new kid on the block, Everyman Cinema. Think, ‘going to the cinema’ but with a twist, swap your soft drinks and popcorn for a cocktail and a burger, all deliciously served to your seat ... which is also a comfy velvet sofa. The venue also serves a stunning drinks and dining area before going into the screen, so it’s a great place to have a catch-up before you enjoy your film.

tiMe for An Mini Adventure

If you fancy some light hearted fun then look no further than Paradise Island Adventure Golf. With two unique 18 hole courses to take on, you can enjoy the twists and turns, humps and bumps and venture through and try to hit the perfect hole-in-one which will reward you with a free game. With the addition of The Bunker, you’ll be fuelled by Mexican style menu and a selection of drinks to keep you going. A perfect activity for day or night and a great option for a group gathering.

SLow it down

Sometimes it’s nice to strip it all back and just spend some quality time together by taking a flask of tea or coffee (or with this heat, a reusable bottle of water) and going for a wander along a coastal path or take a blanket and head down to one of our beautiful local beaches. It’s great to have that balance and arrange something slower-paced as it’s important to share those moments and check in with each other. The wonderful thing about friends is that you’re each other’s personal life coach and counsellor, they’re a place where you can offload without the fear of being judged. Our friends are our safe space and we are theirs.

each friendship is unique and each bond varies for everyone but perhaps you’ve noticed you’ve disconnected from a friend that you’ve not spoken with for a while. this is the perfect opportunity to reach out with a call, a text or even a card.

world youth skills day

“Young people are drivers of change and must be fully engaged in decisions affecting their future. Guided by the United Nations Youth 2030 strategy, I urge everyone to act for youth skills development as a priority, at the Summit and beyond.” - Un Secretary-general António guterres

Established in November 2014 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Skills Day is held annually on 15th July. The day seeks to promote skill expansion among the world’s youth and address challenges and seize opportunities. In recent studies, it shows that around 30% of young women and 13% of young men worldwide are not in employment, education or any form of training.

World youth Skills Day aims to highlight the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, entrepreneurship, innovation and self-employment. providing necessary tools and resources to keep up with the ever-changing nature of jobs with the advances of technology. It opens up the conversation between young people, education and training institutions, employers and employees, firms and development partners.

As part of a 15-year plan, the United Nations has committed to promoting education and lifelong learning opportunities, reducing unemployment and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals are part of the 2030 Agenda which is made up of 17 goals to universally end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere.
