Publisher’s Desk We start off this issue with JharanaBajracharya in the cover page. There are only the unfortunate few who don’t know her – she’s been in the Nepalese film industry for almost two decades and has acted and performed in various films, music videos and advertisements. Jharana is back with a leading role in one of the eagerly anticipated movies ‘Safe Landing’. Created by a team of different nationalities, this film truly reflects the situation of Nepal and Nepalese all over the globe. Home away from home, people face all sorts of oddities in a foreign land and there is no telling what might happen to them. Sometimes, the luck favors the next person and at other times, you are blessed with a fortune. Whatever it is, world is for those who explore and fight off every obstacle. And a foreign land is just the place to do that. There shouldn’t be any re-

strictions, after all. At a time when people are using this intricate network of people to do amazing and near to impossible things, Nepalese people are no less. They are picking up just fine. This month’s talk of the town is TeriyaMagar, who clinched the top spot at Dance India Dance L’il Masters, a popular kids’ dance show in Zee TV in India. Either way, the feeling of achievement even before it actually happens is a little under rated. It gives you a confidence to seize the day, and as long as you are doing, nothing else matters. Hope you had a great time watching the World Cup matches!

Amazon Fire Phone Another competitor in the smartphone world is here, or so we hear. Amazon fire is definitely turning heads with its state of the art technology and all that it has to offer. Delving deeper into how Amazon is catching up with its tech rivals, we have to first see the features. Equipped with a quadcore 2.2 Ghz processor, Amazon Fire phone with 2GB of RAM runs on Fire OS 3.5.0. Initially with 32GB of storage, one can extend it up to 64GB but the clincher has to be the exciting features and UI. THe Amazon Fire has Dynamic Perspective which basically means that it’s all 3D. So when one looks at the screen, one will get the feeling of watching out of a 4.7inch tall window. Navigating through maps is made much more exciting by this 3D perspective. Besides the 3D display, another unique feature are the four cameras of the phone. Yes, four. In addition to the 13 MP rear camera and 2.1MP front camera, it has four front cameras in the four corners of the phone for the full indepth view of the user’s face. Also, the phone is embedded with a scanner called Firefly enabling users to scan everyday item from chocolate bars to books, and helps you find it on Amazon within seconds. Now, that is something that takes online shopping to a whole new level.

Sony Smartwatch 2 The perfect gadget to complement your smartphone, if it runs on Android, is probably this. Just one touch connection through Bluetooth, Sony’s smartwatch 2 makes the job easier for your smartphone and for you. It also has NFC for connecting it with your device. With it, you get notifications allowing you to keep in track of your emails, check messages and receive calls without having to take your phone out of your pocket. You can browse your call logs and make calls easily through it too. The display is easily readable even in the brightest of sunlight and the touch sensitivity of the display makes navigation easier. Sony smartwatch 2 is compatible with any android phone or tablet that runs on Android 4.0 icecream sandwich or the later jelly bean versions. The smartwatch is also a host to numerous applications found in Google play and the built in features makes customization pretty easy. Sony smartwatch is a watch, and also much much more that that.

Q&A

Childhood memories that you remember. What were you like when you were a child? I was very energetic, active and reckless. Always running around, breaking stuffs, roaming around with mates and cousins, you name it. Went through my shares of bumps, bruises, and few broken bones because of my recklessness. What were your dreams and aspirations? I always wanted to be a cricketer, still can remember playing cricket in Tudikhel every weekend with my friends. Well at least I am a great fan of cricket today. Has your childhood dream come true, or took a different turn? Well I think it was pretty unrealistic dream to be fulfilled. Cricket was not that popular in Nepal back then, it was just taken as hobby rather than career. I am a businessman now. What would the young version of you would have thought about the present day you? Pretty astonished. Its just how life takes turn, you never know what is in store for you. My decision to settle in Australia completely changed the path. Having said that, I always wanted to do something on my own. Tell our readers something about your work. How is it like? I am the Group CEO of ASPAC Capital Investments, which oversees Asia Pacific Education & Migration Centre and ASPAC Recruitment. I am responsible for leading the overall direction of the organisation and engage in a wide range of services in investments, migration and student visas and recruitments. What are the challenges and comforts of it? It’s interesting & challenging, though sometimes it takes your personal life such as; working in weekends, late nights work and travelling often. I don’t have much to complain because this is my passion and I appreciate it. When did you come to Australia? And why? About seven years ago. To pursue my further studies and career development.

POM Plus 977 What kind of difficulties did you face then? Staying away from close ones. How is it like, being a professional in a foreign country? It’s pretty exciting but there is still so much to learn and develop myself. What is the one factor(s) that sets you apart from everyone else? I work to be the most effective, collaborative and results-driven personality and it’s important to keep the right perspective, something I do strive to instill for the utmost quality work. Where do you get your inspiration? I find my inspiration from so many things around there it’s actually hard to describe one or two occasional inspiration sources but I’ll try. Witnessing how my grandfather started his business and flourished in the past, thrive to earn money and luxury in life, seeing other business icons and so on. What are your thoughts on the scenario of Nepal in relation with your profession/business? How is it compared to Australia? Well Australia has bigger international clients and lots of more opportunities in comparison to Nepal. As everybody say Australia is the land of opportunity, that’s what it is. What does Nepal lack in that context? The market is saturated, political instability and lack of proper law and order.

What is the role of the government and the individual to decrease that gap and achieve the goal? It’s an interesting question, but I can just speak as a general public. From an individual perspective, the Nepal government should take responsibilities and literally start functioning. What is/are your hobby? Watching movies, cricket and football and playing games online. Favorite holiday destination? Brisbane Favorite: Color, season, gadget, food. Color: Yellow , Season: Winter Gadget: At this moment Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Food: Momo / Turkish Chicken shish Kebab What is your message to young people who are starting or struggling in this field? Story Tell us something about Safe Landing. Safe landing is a very different kind of movie which is put together with a new concept, not the clichéd ‘different’, but the way it is, it is not like your regular movie. From the acting to editing, the whole story comes into a full turning and it is definitely something to watch out for. People of different nationalities have given a go at it from the production to acting, just to think that all these people have come together to produce this movie and in Nepal, says a lot. Who are the target audience? We would definitely want a wide audience and I think that it will cater to people of all age group. These days, Nepalese have reached the far end of the globe. The story is something that Nepalese living all over the place will feel a connection to in some level. Safe landing was created in that perspective. It doesn’t have your regular dhisumdhisum moment and I think they’ll like that. Tell us something about your character in the movie. I play a very corrupted cop based in Kathmandu who uses a lot of slang words and not-that-discreet language. She is straight-forward and no-nonsense sort of person and doesn’t hesitate to take action where it is required. How was it playing that kind of role? How is it different from the characters that you usually played? This is not a glamorous role, walking about in frilly dresses and singing around the place. In fact, what made me excited about my role was the fact that I don’t have to do any dancing-under-the-trees songs. It just has one catchy item song. The character I portray is different than the ones from the previous ones in the sense that she doesn’t hold herself back. She is a cop and she can’t afford to do that. She is a very practical person. I feel that it is a very character driven role. She relieves herself in crude street language. Personally, it was nice to be doing all that. I felt great letting myself go and not having to do the glam-role over and over again. How was it working with the cast and crew of ‘Safe Landing’? It was actually fun working with these people. They were a young crowd in their 20s or 30s and even though it took a little time to organize and start the work, it felt great to be a part of a group who were open to experimentation and new ideas. What is the reason behind the movie being premiered in Australia and not Nepal? It all comes down to our producers’ decision. Basanta is from Australia and he wanted to hype it up there first and slowly come to Nepal. Plus, they are confident with Australian post production process. Either way, our aim is to go wherever Nepalese are. You’ve been active in the film industry for two decades now, what changes have you felt during this time? Personally, I have felt better in dealing with the camera. I was a different person back then, and I am much more confident now. It’s been a nice ride. Besides that, I still think our industry could do with some more drastic changes. It’s still the same thing over and over again. To talk about my experience, I wish that there were more roles to portray women in their thirties and the likes. There needs to be more diversity and much exploring.

Story

What do you look for in a role? It’s more about the team that I would work with, that affects me. If I am working with a good production team, the kind that inspires me, keeps me going with their creativity and energy, I am up for it, no matter how small the role is. But if the role is great and the team is incompatible, it would be hard to last for the shooting time. My basic choosing point has been comfort and confidence. If I believe that my role or character would be portrayed or presented properly, I will do that, else, I just turn it down. Even with the Safe Landing team, the team is young and it was exciting to work with them because of their sheer enthusiasm and the will to keep on working. What have you been doing besides the film promotion? I am busy with my meditation center (J’s Meditation). I opened it after I finished the work for the film and I’ve been involved with it for a year now. Meditation is something that I’ve done since I was 16 – I’ve got a good base with it and it is very important with me. After being in the industry for so long, did you ever think about joining the production line? I like writing so I’d like to write, if that day ever comes. I don’t know about directing a movie, but I’ll definitely give short movies a go. I like to be creative about it, keep my creative juices flowing. What are your future plans? I will definitely be a mother, have a family, and have my own thing going. I’m pretty ready to start a new life. But I am someone who can’t compromise with things that I want, I want both my personal and professional life to flourish. I’m trying to balance these elements in my life, so that I don’t have complaints with myself. What are the five things that people don’t know about you? a. I am a very funny person, people just don’t know that yet. b. I love cooking, I experiment sometimes. c. I’m not a very social person, as surprising as that may sound. I get along with few people. d. I used to indulge myself in books of all sorts, especially spiritual books. I loved reading Nancy Drew books at one time and Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ has been one of my favorites of all time. e. I Google everything. When will you be going to Australia and for how long? How excited are you? Probably first week of Australia and will be staying there for a week for the three back to back shows. I’m pretty excited about going to Australia – the last I went there was when I was 19 to dance in Gairikhetko. I wasn’t really established back then and didn’t know what I was doing. I am a different person now and it would be pretty great to see how it is now and collect responses for the film. What would you like to say to the Plus 977 readers? Don’t forget to catch ‘Safe Landing’ and thank you for the support you’ve blessed me with.

Impressions of a first time cruiser

I

have always had cursing on my bucket list but never thought it would happen soon. During Christmas 2013, I was desperately looking for places to go for our holiday. After evaluating our list and considering our finances, we booked our first cruise on Carnival Spirit to New Caledonia and thus our journey began. Once we booked and paid for the trip, it was time to do our research and I have to admit there were so many different opinions on the internet that it was hard for us to make up our mind on what to expect. We both decided that no matter what happened, we would try our best to make the cruise holiday memorable. The first thing we noticed when we went to Circular Quay to board the ship was how massive it was. We joined other excited holidaymakers clearing the customs and boarded the ship. Our luggage was checked in and would be taken directly to our room. Embarkation was as easy as giving them our credit card and getting a Sail &Sign card (Sail & Sign is Carnival’s on board cashless credit program, which allows you to charge all your services and purchases during your cruise to your room.) We were told to wait on the top deck where drinks and lunch was waiting for us until our rooms are ready and the luggage is delivered.

As we walked in, we noticed that the ship was huge and amazing with Christmas decoration everywhere. I was excited to see so

many different bars, lounges and restaurantson the map. It was as if I was in a different city and it was going to be our home for the next 2 weeks. Once we finished lunch, we were told that our room was

ready. We got a room with a window and it was just perfect. It was not very big but enough for two with en suite,a big wardrobe, TV and mini bar.By the time we went to our room our luggage had already arrived. While unpacking, I was really glad that I didn’t need to re-pack until the end of the trip.I also didn’tneed to learn a new culture, to speak a different language or to stick to transport schedules but could just relax and enjoy our time on board and look forward to an awesome time in New Caledonia. The first impression for both of us was really good, starting from the nice lunch to the room, we were assigned and the things we learned. I was quite surprised by how much there is to do on a cruise ship. It is your choice, if you like to have a dayfull of nonstop activities or simply relax on one of the deck chairs or hammocks and read a book.Every day there is an enthusiastic voice through the loud speaker system, telling us what is happening that day, where we can go, what we can eat and what we canbuy on an hourly basis so you are always informed.

Travel Plus 977 We utilise all the facilities on board and were always busy doing one thing or another. My best place to relax was definitely the Serenity area and it was always fun to go and ride in the Green Thunder. Food was always available no matter the time of day or night. We had most of our breakfast and lunch on the Lido deck and dinner in the Empire dining room. The few times we had afternoon tea, we were very impressed by the selections of cakes and fruits. We saw kids running around with pizzas and ice cream all the time. We had no complains about the food at all. The one thing I really loved onboard the Carnival Spirit was the entertainment. There was always something happening especially during the night that we had no time to be bored. Most nights we were going from one event to another fully enjoying each performance. From stand up comedian to hypnotist, juggler, Vegas style show they had everyone covered. If you are into trivia and games, you could always find one area hosting the event. They tried their best to make the sea days more entertaining and full of activities to every kind of travellers. Apart from kids club for the young ones, they could be entertained in many other ways. They will definitely enjoy the rides in Water Park so just get wet. They will love the Chocolate extravaganza day and they will never worry you regarding food. Port days were fun and well managed. If you want to know the details on what to do, please research before you board so you can google the images and read reviews of the things to do in each island. Disembarkation at all ports was easy and no stress at all. We really enjoyed different ports in New Caledonia but we were glad to come back to the ship and carry on with our holiday with awesome food waiting for us each time.I might sound vain but I also enjoyed the fact they made our room twice a day. Every time we came back to our room, it was clean and the bed was made. After reading, my experience if you are wondering if cruise isyour cup of tea, here is the list of pros and cons I experienced which I hope will help you make up your mind. Pros • The most important pro of cursing is that it is definitely value formoney. Your cruise package includes room, dining, most entertainment and many extras. Except alcohol and soft drinks, you don’t need to buy anything unless you are shopping. This gives you a clear picture on how much you are going to spend in advance. • Less hassle as everything is planned for you. • If you are a social person, it’s a great way to meet new friends. We made a few friends while on board. • No need to worry about food. It is always there and always changing. No matter what kind of taste you have, they cater for you.

I felt more relaxed during the whole trip as there was not much to plan and no running around. There are fewer unexpected problems to solve. Pack and unpack only once.

Cons • Less exploration time as you are in one port for a day only. (May be multiple days depending on cruise but still less than if you go to one place only.) • Fewer destination options as your destination will be the coastal areas only • If you are after a quiet, relaxing getaway, then cruise may not be your cup of tea. • Motion Sickness can be a problem for many people. Do not forget to take some medicines of it. I hope this has given you some useful insights and helps you make up your mind if Cruising is for you. Happy Crusing!!!

ootball. The mere mention of it can evoke memories, emotions and drama that is unparalleled by any other sport. And EA has an absolute treat in store for football fans who enjoy the beautiful game both on the pitch and from within the comfort of their own homes. Electronic Arts has teamed up with EA Canada to release FIFA 15. This edition of FIFA, with its stunning details and added level of realism, is sure to bring the drama of the pitch into life. For the first time, all 22 players are connected with Emotional Intelligence. With this new feature, players can react to opponents and teammates within the context, and relative to the narrative of the match. The all-new visuals make the players look leaner, more athletic and true to their real-life appearance. Fans can now experience the emotion of the sport like never before. The intensity of the crowd’s cheering, as if one is in the stadium itself watching it live, and to listen to commentators guide the fans through the game with Dynamic Match Presentation, FIFA 15 is set to enthrall all gamers. It also includes features that heighten up the responsiveness of player movement and gives the athletes more control over the ball. If you thought FIFA 14 was good, then the latest edition is set to be mind-blowing and usher in the reign of next-gen consoles once again. Talking about the next generation, EA introduced it only last year when they released the next gen version of FIFA 14 and Xbox. The Ignite engine introduced in ’14 was indeed impressive, but a whole new level of gaming experience can be expected this time around. This is a game everyone should watch out. The FIFA 15 trailer released some time ago had really good reviews and made much of the gaming enthusiasts itching to get their hands on it as soon as possible. The subtle visual effects of players with wet jerseys in the rain, harsh tackles in the mud and grass amongst others gives it the entire realistic feel that a gamer so dearly desires. The latest entry in EA’s endless football gaming series will be seen in PCs pretty soon after a few formalities have been dealt with. On PC, FIFA 15 runs on EA’s Ignite engine and flaunt the same featues as the PS4 and Xbox One editions. Indeed, EA sport has done it again. Releasing in late September 2014. Available for PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo 3DS videogame consoles and Microsoft Windows.

At the mid age time and energy become the main issue. Yes, the

focus in career and family ties become more challenging and we have to balance the duties. Later on, we may have time – but less energy. Also, we

can’t ignore the fact that we start moving less in this mid age i.e. we sit

a little longer. Here, the metabolic rate declines means that our energy expenditure decreases due to aging and less movement. If we don’t live an

active life, our joints and muscles become vulnerable. We’ve always heard the arthritic pain from parents, don’t we? We need to learn from their pain

and sufferings and start living an active life. Physical activity is still very essential at the mid age. The exercise should not be always vigorous as you

think. Keeping an active daily life like gardening, walking, lawn mowing, walking to the shops, etc. may help a lot. Make a Change: Our joints and muscles start signaling after 40th birthday. We need to

If you haven’t started weight training at the age of 40, then you should

now. Strength training not only helps to prevent and increase muscle mass and bone density but also to boost your metabolic rate that helps to burn more calories.

Modification: You may experience discomfort at any time while you are working out. If you keep feeling the discomfort, know it’s time to modify your training. If running gets tougher, start walking extra mile. Seek Expert’s Help:

If you live a sedentary lifestyle for long time, it is highly recommended to hire a personal trainer. Hire a personal trainer to create a program for you

o quote him, it all started when he was a small boy. It was no surprise to his family that he would be doing music. A guitar on hand, he would practice playing songs in his spare time. 8 years later, in his 21st year in this world, he is gearing up to come out

with his solo album by the end of 2014. He is doing all the work – from singing, playing to mixing – and most of it is usually done on his own computer. He says that he hasn’t yet got a concrete plan of how it is going to be, but says that he has a fair idea of the outcome. “I know my style, the sound, it’s gonna have a little of metal, rock and jazz influences. But I think it’ll be more of an EP (Extended Play) rather than an album,” he says. He has already worked with local artists like Yuvash Vaidhya, Shreeti Pradhan, Supral Raj Joshi and even worked as a mixing engineer. Besides his album, he’s also working with a “really good guitarist”, Bijel Shrestha and a local band called ‘Nakinjhyaa’. He thinks that music is a communal act and sport and it should be shared with as many people as possible. This is something he picked up from Mick Goodrick, an American jazz guitarist and Nikesh’s idol, who he got to meet and learn something valuable from when he was in Berklee. He went to Berklee College of Music in Boston from summer of 2013 to spring of 2014. He shares that the first semester at the college was amazing and that it took him one step closer to being a complete musician. Having seen and met many great musicians, the whole experience terrified him in the beginning, but it made him finally understand the allure and possibility of music. Therefore, he is on his way to show the naysayers that he, too, can do something. He dreams of a time when he will play his own custom made special guitar that he himself designed in front of a cheering crowd. In another scenario, he wishes to form a Jazz trio in Boston and perform many gigs there or work with ‘The Fringe’, a New York based Jazz Band. In the near future though, he is preparing to participate in the upcoming Kathmandu Jazz Festival or Jazzmandu and start his own Guitar Tutorial lessons on YouTube. Besides music, he is also interested in visual arts, drawing and sketching and of course, reading. He is faithfully set on his musical and intellectual pursuits.

10 Benefits of Lemon - by Mani Joshi

As the cold and flu season is here, it is a good idea to take preventive measures to make sure we don’t get sick. There are many home remedies that we could use to strengthen our immune system and today I am sharing the benefits of one of them: the lemon. Lemon is easily available throughout the year, has strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers and contains citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene that promote immunity and fight infection. Here are 10 benefits which have been attributed to lemons:

1. Lemon gives immune system a boost with Vitamin C, an essential nutrient that protects the body against immune system deficiencies. 2. Lemon is an excellent source of potassium, which is good for heart, brain and nerve function.Lemon juice not only encourages healthy digestion by loosening toxins in your digestive tract, it helps to relieve symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn, burping, and bloating maintaining the pH levels in the body. 3. Having warm lemon juice early in the morning helps flush out toxins by enhancing enzyme function and stimulating your liver. 4. Lemon juice helps replenish body salts especially after a strenuous workout session 5. Lemon contains citric acid, which can be effective in treating acne. The vitamin C found in citrus fruits is vital for that healthy glowing skin while its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria known to cause acne. 6. Lemons contain pectin fiber, which assists in fighting hunger cravings. 7. Warm lemon water is the most effective way to diminish viral infections and sore throats. If you have a sore throat, add the juice of 1 lemon and 1 teaspoon (5ml) of sea salt to 1 cup lukewarm water and gargle three times a day to diminish the burning sensation. 8. A little lemon juice sprinkled on freshly cut apples, bananas, or avocados will keep them from turning brown 9. Lemon strengthens the liver by providing energy to the liver enzymes when they are too dilute.

Out in the Wild

S

he looked at his time ravaged waist coat, the lumpy dhaka topi, the daura suruwal that had seen twenty thousand days and wondered if anything was going to change now. Her hands that were cutting battis until a while ago had stopped and was waiting for her to come around. With an air of indifference to the man that she had shared the six decades of her life with, she continued the meticulous and tedious process of cutting the traditional battis, a pass time that had turned into a precious means of livelihood when her husband had retired and her children had asked the pair of them to move out of the house. Her husband, mad with rage at such a ‘request’ had decided to leave on his own. He looked at his wife once and she had no choice but to follow him out of the door that would close with no regrets behind them. Secretly, she resented her husband who was a sort of an alien force that came up with odd ideas and orders. But he was old and it was too late to change him. His ideas had created its own universe and despite its magnificence, she had seen little cracks and new holes growing every day. As she held the end of her sari and crossed the threshold, she told herself that this was only expected of them, their beloved children. For days, staying at an isolated old house of a relative, they hadn’t exchanged words. Suppertime wasn’t mired in the awkwardness, having grown old together and knowing everything there was to know about each other. They made small talk, however, about the drainage system of the street they lived in, where her husband was always coming up with ideas to address the problem. After a few days of countless arguments and trips to the tole sudhar samitee’s office, he came with two ladoos to be eaten after dinner that night as a celebration of the good changes he had caused. As years passed on, the ladoos had

turned to a packet of sugar-free biscuits or an occasional saree for her, but that was when he was too proud to let things bother him. Despite turning the stinking, eye-sore, poorly managed tole to a clean, properly taken-care-of area, he never changed anything about their little house. On the roof grew green fern that swayed along with the tiles every time the wild wind passed by. The hours of load shedding kept them in darkness. Candles or lights were allowed only after 6 pm, so she stuck by the small window to cut the battis and see the things she had been denied due to the unavailability of TV. After all, the size of the window rarely affected the scenes and the stories taking place there. Also, she was too old to complain about how she had been devoid of modernity. She cooked, cleaned, prayed and sat by the window whenever she wasn’t doing any of that. And every day, she saw something amusing to think about – things that didn’t remind her of her family because she had found it in her heart not to. She believed that was what women did. For some time now, three of her children had started sending money and presents on different occasions. It had come to their attention that all of their offspring were pursuing their dreams along with their grandkids in the foreign lands. The gifts and checks stayed untouched and forgotten. There was no reason to go to banks for the checks, decided by a silent agreement between the couple. But he did go there once every four months for the pension. There was something soothing about it. Once, when the pension didn’t come for weeks after it was due, one of them remarked, ‘If only it would come on time – I haven’t been to the bhatti for ages!” They descended the stairs and left the bustling building out into the scorching sun, the wrinkled faces betraying their feelings of disappointment.

TAX Tips

For Students

Know if you’re a resident for tax purposes If you’re an overseas student studying at an Australian education institution for a period of six months or more you will be regarded as an Australian resident for income tax purposes. But remember, you are only entitled to a pro rata tax-free threshold if you are only an Australian resident for part of the year. If you are an Australian resident you will be required to disclose all your income earned for the year, including income derived overseas, and will be entitled to claim eligible tax deductions and offsets. Identify all your sources income that is tax payable Any money earned during the year is tax payable if the sources of income derived are: • income from work as an employee or a contractor, including any tips or gratuities received • investment income, such as any bank interest or dividends on shares received • certain government payments received such as Austudy, ABSTUDY and youth allowance • some non-government scholarships, grants and awards • distributions from a family trust or partnership Find Out if you need to lodge your Tax Return: If your taxable income for the year ended 30 June 2014 is below $18,200, you will typically not have to lodge an income tax return for the 2013-14 tax year. However, if there has been money withheld from your taxable income during the year, then you need to lodge your Tax return. Tax can be withheld from your pay, and it can also be withheld from any interest income you earned during the year if you have not provided your tax file number (TFN) to your bank. Know your deductions You are entitled to claim deductions for certain expenses that are directly related to the income you have received. For example, you can claim work-related deductions if you have the necessary receipts or credit card statements. Typical work-related expenses that are allowable include uniforms, protective clothing, employment-related telephone, mobile and internet costs, subscriptions and union fees. Travel & Car expenses cannot be claimed to travel to work and from home. If you receive Austudy, ABSTUDY, Newstart Allowance, youth allowance or other taxable Commonwealth government education or training payments, you are eligible for the beneficiary offset. This offset ensures you do not have to pay tax on those payments. You may, however, have to pay tax on other income, such as wages or investment income. In certain circumstances the low income tax offset will be available to reduce tax payable on such income provided your taxable income exceeds the tax-free threshold for

the particular year. The ATO will automatically calculate these offsets when they process your tax return. You may, however, be eligible for other tax offsets which you must claim through your tax return. Students should therefore consult their CPA Australia registered tax agent to identify if any other tax offsets available. Under 18? Consider these special rules: Certain types of income derived by students under the age of 18 may be taxed at a higher rate. • A$416 - A$1307 : 66% • A$1307 and more : 45% Minors will also not be able to typically claim the low income tax offset to reduce their tax liability on such income. Ordinary marginal tax rates will apply to other income derived by a minor aged under 18, such as: • employment or business income • taxable government payments such as Youth Allowance • income from a deceased estate • income from property transferred to a minor as a result of a person’s death or a family breakdown • net capital gains on a disposal of investments Identify eligible self-education expenses If your study is directly related to maintaining or improving your skills in your current occupation, or could increase your income from your current employment, you can claim self-education expenses. Typical self-education expenses include: • course fees • textbooks • stationery • student union fees • the depreciation of assets such as computers and printers Consider your HELP Debts if you are domestic student If you have a HELP debt, repayments only commence once your salary exceeds $51,308 (for year ending June 30 2014 and is indexed annually). The specific amount required to be repaid will depend on a range of factors, including your taxable income. If you are working and you have filled out a tax file number declaration form, your employer will withhold additional tax from your salary to assist you cover your HELP debt. The Australian Taxation Office will automatically calculate what your HELP repayment is for the year once you lodge your tax return. If you don’t notify your employer that you have a HELP debt through the TFN declaration, your employer will not withhold the additional tax and you may therefore find yourself facing a hefty tax bill. Nepal performed brilliantly in recently held T20 World Cup where they defeated ODI nations and associate rivals Afghanistan and Hong Kong but lost to full member Bangladesh only by slimmest of run-rate to progress into the super-10 stage of the tournament. On the other hand, Netherlands was giant killer in Bangladesh as they defeated England and threatened the sides like South Africa and New Zealand to surprise the cricketing world. The other associate members that have T20I status by virtue of having One Day International (ODI) status are Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Ireland, Scotland, Papua New Guinea and UAE. Having this status means, any match Nepal play against any of the aforementioned associates or any of the other 10 full members will be an ICC certified T20I match.
