GROW YOUR MIND AT MINE DAY, PLATTEVILLE'S CLASSIC STEAM FESTIVAL

Festive food and beverages will be served all day at The Friends of The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums concession stand. Hot, tasty food will be provided in part by Platteville A&W Restaurant, plus cold beer and soft drinks. Custom ice cream flavors featuring Driftless Area ingredients created for the Museum by Pioneer Sweets of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville will be available in the Museum Store.

Free games for kids will include panning for gems and minerals, Tommyknocker Sucker Pull, Plinko, Hard Hat Ball Toss, and more — with prizes that nurture interest in the hobby of rock and mineral collecting. You Dig-It! Treasure Kits will be available in two varieties in the Museum Store ($14.50) for a fabulous hands-on children’s activity at the Mini Mill Treasure Table that features cobbing, sifting and winnowing, and washing just like a real historic mill.

What do you call a summer family festival with bluegrass music all day, delicious concessions, earth science-themed games like panning for gems, underground UV-light prospecting, exciting industrial arts and crafts demonstrations like blacksmithing and pneumatic drilling, and more? At The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums, we call it Mine Day! Platteville’s classic festival of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) returns on Saturday, August 12, with even more awesome content for fun and learning for all ages.

Folks are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to enjoy three live bluegrass bands, games, gem-and-mineral displays, and demonstrations — all for free. Advance reservations are suggest-

ed for specially priced new UV Light Prospecting Mine Tours at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and half-price Museum admission, Guided Mine Tours, and unlimited train rides all day.

Demonstrations include a lead pour and casting, a steam engine running on compressed air, lapidary arts (stone and gem working), pneumatic drilling, plus carbide lamp lighting and other hands-on earth science activities. The Badger Lapidary and Geological Society will be on site with gems and minerals for sale and display. This year we will also host special guest “Driftless Digger” Jim Winter for a demonstration of curious artifacts he has found across the region while he metal detects, bottle digs, creek walks and magnet fishes, all with the goal of preserving our past.

Winners of the Pick & Gad Raffle will be drawn at 3 p.m. This Friends of The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums benefit raffle offers a $1,000 Grand Prize, a $250 Second Prize, a $100 Third Prize, and eight $40 prizes. Interested in purchasing a raffle ticket? Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Museums between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Proceeds benefit the 2023 Annual Fund and directly support Museum operations and Friends programs like school field trip scholarships.

Special Feature:

GET TO KNOW THE CITY INTERNS

The City of Platteville is proud to partner with UW-Platteville in many ways. Many City Departments have had positive and productive experiences working with UW-P students through internships and volunteer opportunities. Get to know some of our recent interns! For more information about internships and work opportunities within the City of Platteville, please visit www.platteville.org/jobs.

Laura is a Junior majoring in English-Professional Writing; she also is minoring in Creative Writing and Business Administration.

What semester did you complete your internship? Spring 2023

Where did you complete your internship? Platteville Public Library

What type of experiences did you have? What projects did you work on and what did you do? I created Facebook posts, wrote weekly Council updates and articles, and proofread/provided feedback on presentations and grant proposals. One project I had the privilege to work on was the creation of a social story for patrons. The goal of our social story is to depict the process of visiting the library in a way that is descriptive and inviting, to make sure that the library feels safe, welcoming, and accessible to everyone in the community.

Who trained and supervised you during your internship? Jessie Lee-Jones, director of the Platteville Public Library, has given me daily mentorship and training.

What type of insight did this internship give you for going into the workforce? This internship has helped me hone in on my strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to discover how I work in a professional environment. It has also helped me challenge and grow my writing skills.

How did you hear about your internship? When I was looking for an internship, my academic advisor, Laura Roberts, suggested I contact the Platteville Public Library to see if they had anything available. The lovely Jessie Lee-Jones, Director of the library, welcomed me on her team for this semester.

Ryann Klein

Ryann is a Secondary Education History Major with a minor in English.

What semester did you complete your internship? Spring 2021

Where did you complete your internship? The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums

What type of experiences did you have? What projects did you work on and what did you do? Throughout my time as an intern, I cataloged artifacts in the museum’s PastPerfect database, while relocating and cleaning them. I aided in relocating and restoring some of the artwork donated by Rollo Jamison in 1980. I learned several things to consider when working with archival artifacts. For instance, paper is incredibly fragile and prone to deterioration. Thus, the appropriate materials, storage conditions, and restoration techniques are necessary to prevent further damage to archival artifacts.

Who trained and supervised you during your internship? To aid my training, Rachel Vang, a Museum Specialist, was an excellent resource for her questions and concerns.

What type of insight did this internship give you for going into the workforce? My internship has impacted my current position as a tutor and in my education, in that, I strengthened my understanding of how history impacts the present moment. Moreover, I completed weekly reports on my internship, improving my writing skills.

How did you hear about your internship? When I visited the museum in 2020, I asked if they were looking for any volunteers, and the museum attendant indicated they were accepting volunteers but also looking for interns, so I applied for the position.

Keagan is majoring in Health and Human Performance-Health Promotion.

What semester did you complete your internship? Spring 2023

Where did you complete your internship? Parks and Recreation Department in City Hall

What type of experiences did you have? What projects did you work on and what did you do? I have done a lot of programming activities and advertisements. I also made a presentation and helped set up an event. I will be teaching introduction to sports classes when those start-up as well as leading other things in my time here.

Who trained and supervised you during your internship? I was trained by Adam Bartels, Recreation and Community Events Coordinator in the Parks and Recreation department.

What type of insight did this internship give you for going into the workforce? This gave me insight into what a job outside of school is like. Although I do not plan to work in a parks and rec department anytime soon because of grad school, it was still a good internship to have.

How did you hear about your internship? A professor approached me in the Health & Human Performance office last semester and suggested it to me.

PROPOSED NEW PLATTEVILLE FIRE STATION PROJECT UPDATE

For the most up-to-date information on the Platteville Fire Station Project, continue to visit the dedicated page on the City website at www.platteville.org/fire under, "Proposed New Platteville Fire Station Project."

During the months of January, February, and March, city staff met with the townships of Belmont, Elk Grove, Ellenboro, Harrison, Lima, Platteville, and Smelser to provide them each with an overview of where the project currently stands and provide an opportunity for each township to provide feedback to city staff on the project.

In February of 2023, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Cultural Resource Management was contracted to conduct architecture/history investigations for the New Platteville Fire Station Project. These investigations were designed to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. In conclusion, the architecture/history investigations

identified 2 potentially eligible resources within the project’s Area of Potential Effect, and the proposed fire station development is not considered to constitute an adverse effect to either property.

In February of 2023, the City of Platteville invited firms to submit a Construction Management at Risk (CM@R) Services proposal for the Platteville Fire Station Construction Project. The CM@R will be part of an integrated team to assure that the scope of work and the goals of the city are properly aligned through the design process. Five firms submitted proposal and a subcommittee consisting of city staff and community members met over the course of February to review and interview the selected finalist firms. During the February 28, 2023, Common Council meeting a formal recommendation was approved by the council to request the common council authorize city staff to enter into an agreement with Kraemer Brothers a firm based in Plain, WI to provide Construction Manager at Risk Services for the City of Platteville.

In February and March of 2023, City staff and Common Council Leadership continue to work with Wendel/ Five Bugles Design on the schematic design for the fire station project. It is anticipated the schematic design will be available for official review during the month of April and presented to the various committees and municipalities.

During the first quarter of 2023, Inspiring Community, Inc. has been working alongside the City of Platteville and the Platteville Volunteer Fire Department on kickstarting a fundraising campaign for the new fire station. During the month of April and moving forward, Inspiring Community. Inc. will be conducting various marketing campaigns and community presentations to garner interest and support for the new fire station.

For a brief Community Interest Survey on how to become involved with the Platteville Fire Station Project, please visit the City website at www. platteville.org/fire under, "Proposed New Platteville Fire Station Project."

RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Armory Sale?

Irv Lupee retired on March 15, 2023 after serving the citizens of Platteville for over 19 years as the Utility Superintendent. He was very diligent in his responsibilities to the health of our citizens with safe drinking water and clean wastewater. Irv was very proactive in communicating with citizens on these subjects. While here, he oversaw construction of two new wells to serve the city for the next 75 years. He also oversaw upgrades and replacement of 40 year-old equipment at the wastewater plant. The robust design and excellent operations under his direction resulted in a 20% increase in the rating of the plant without need for expansion. Thank you for your dedication to our City and best wishes, Irv!

With warmer weather on its way, the anticipation of fun at the PIP is nearly palpable! While we look forward to playing with everyone, there are a few finishing touches that need to be completed before the PIP can officially open.

The PIP Committee would like to give a special thank you to the City of Platteville for their hard work this spring assembling the new, beautiful and accessible picnic tables that will be

located at the PIP, they look great!

As the ground thaws, you will begin to see construction crews return to install the remaining 5 to 10% of playground equipment as well as the shade canopies, place our accessible grills, install the permanent story walk, complete the upgrades to the stone shelter, add the parking lot striping and complete the landscaping around the PIP. In addition, one of the last items you see go in and

perhaps one of the most vital components to the mission of the PIP is our poured in place rubber play surface.

The poured in place rubber not only provides an important element of fall safety but it also helps to make the PIP accessible for visitors of all ages and abilities. In order for this key component to be installed the weather has to be consistently warmer (there is a minimum temperature required of 40-45 degrees for the poured in place rubber to cure properly) with NO precipitation (no rain OR snow!) throughout the entire installation process. As you can imagine that can be tricky with Wisconsin spring weather!

We want installation of our poured in place rubber to both go smoothly and last for years to come so we don’t want to rush before Mother Nature is ready. We appreciate your support and your patience as we wait for the weather to allow completion of the incredible Platteville Inclusive Playground. Trust us, it will be worth the wait!
