Communications Specialist Jodie Richards sat down with the new City Manager, Clint Langreck, to learn how he is settling into the new position. Clint began with the City on May 1st of this year.

You have been onboard now for several weeks, what should residents know about your job?

Well, my first impressions are that the position of City Manager will be a challenging undertaking. The Community of Platteville, as led by the City Council and supporting partners, have some very eager goals in which the City staff and resources play decisive roles. The members of the community understand that planned growth, attraction of families, and retention of families will be the key in ensuring a vibrant future of the community. I look forward to working with the exceptional staff of directors in place, on advising our elected officials on policy and priorities, managing the limited personnel and resources granted, and meeting the strategic goals of the City Council.

What excites you about being Platteville’s City Manager?

I am excited with the combination of the people I get to meet and work with, and the diversity of projects that come across the desk on any given day. In the last few months, I have had the fortune of meeting many amazing community members, many inspiring business owners, and many dedicated city-staff members. I am very excited to be a part of this team. Likewise, the verity of projects that come over the city manager desks impressive. I have conversations on crop yields, bond ratings, state legislation, performance evaluations, schematic designs, fund-raising, and security cameras all in the same afternoon. Every day has been exciting, and I don’t foresee the trend changing anytime soon.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Assuming it probably wasn't a City manager?

My hometown is Neillsville Wisconsin. As a youth, I quickly realized that my

limited hand-eye-coordination and fear of heights were going to impact my dreams of being recruited by the NBA or NASA. I left high school with the intention of becoming a teacher. I joined Army ROTC to help pay for tuition. I was in my sophomore year when the 911 attacks happened. I changed my major from education to political science, in anticipation of my future role in national defense. While serving in Iraq, I developed a very deep appreciation for effective government. I watched many Iraqi People struggling without the basic services of safety, a justice system, utilities, and the many other services that we take for granted on any given day. Returning home to Wisconsin, I began public service as a County Veterans Service Officer. The more I learned of local government, the more I felt I wanted to be involved, and I pursued opportunities to take on more responsibility; from Human Resources Management, I moved into administration roles, and now I am blessed with the opportunity to serve as your City Manager.

Getting involved in the community is a great way to get to know Platteville. Do you have any ideas as to how you might like to be involved? What types of things do you like to do in your off hours? My family and I are looking forward to participating in many of the community events this summer. Dairy Days sounds like a blast. I am excited to meet some faces at the pool and make new friends at “Music in the Park.” I have high expectations of meeting many parents at the Inclusive Playground, and I look forward to meeting more friendly faces at the Public Library. Our museum is also inspiring, I look forward to getting to know the people supporting that noble cause. I parent on my off hours. My wife and I have three ambitious children (ages 7-12) and they keep us on our toes. During my few hours of “me time” you might see me riding (bike) or running on a county road, or swimming at the local pool.

HISTORIC RE-ENACTMENT RETURNS FOR 25TH LIVING HISTORY CELEBRATION

The 25th annual Platteville Historic Re-enactment September 8-10 will celebrate a quarter-century’s span of hands-on, living history celebrations. Held every year since 1998, the three-day Platteville Historic Re-enactment showcases the history of America’s Upper Mississippi Valley from the mid-1700s to 1840, featuring educators, artisans, and re-enactors taking part in a diverse encampment welcoming some 3,000 visitors per year. With one full day focused on welcoming schools and two days welcoming the general public, Historic Re-enactment is one of the most popular attractions of Dairy Days weekend each September. The presenters of this event create a camp in Mound View Park and take special pride in its educational and participatory spirit. Each of nearly 30 camp sites rep-

resents a team of historians and educators who focus on a particular historical theme. Some have participated since the inaugural event, with additional presenters bringing freshness and expanded interpretation with each passing year. New in 2023 will be food artisans Bud’s Root Beer and Ma’s Fry Bread.

Platteville’s re-enactment is distinctive to our Upper Mississippi Valley region, focusing on an exciting time relevant to our place — the time when America was established but still young and Americans were pushing west to the frontier for trapping and mining before Wisconsin became a territory (1836) and eventually a state (1848). There is no admission fee, but free-will donations are encouraged and a si-

lent auction for hand-crafted history-related items will be held.

Camp hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, September 8, which emphasizes student tours for schools. Weekend hours include 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Mound View Park is located on the city’s northeast side at the intersection of Madison Street and Broadway Street (County Road B). For more information and classroom teaching materials to complement your visit to the Platteville Historic Re-enactment, see www.mining.jamison.museum/ hr. To book a school field trip, contact the Platteville Regional Chamber at (608) 348-8888. Also, find the Platteville Historic Re-enactment on Facebook. We look forward to seeing you!

The future of education is currently undergoing a profound transformation. Advancements in technology and changing societal needs are reshaping the way teachers teach and students learn. At the Platteville School District, we know that education plays a critical role in shaping the future of our society and it is essential to equip students with the practical skills that foster innovation, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

The idea of a one-size-fits-all education is giving way to personalized learning opportunities and here in Platteville, these opportunities are being built, quite literally,

by our students every day. In the past 5 years, the district has made significant investments in our career and technical education programs. This can be seen in our dynamic construction classes, culinary classes, agricultural classes, in-house CNC Machinist Program, and our CTE (Career & Technical Education) Programs. All of which are supported through the district’s innovation with curriculum and progressing partnerships with Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Integrating these classes and programs into our educational foundation allows students to develop valuable practical skills as they provide valuable experience and countless benefits. First, it bridges

the gap between knowledge and practical application, ensuring students are well-rounded in their skill sets. Second, it promotes interdisciplinary learning, fostering connections between subjects like math, science, design, and technology. These initiatives also nurture creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability.

In November of 2022, the Platteville community took a significant step in voting in favor of a $36 million capital improvement referendum which allowed the Platteville School District to invest in infrastructure and significant improvements at each campus. Particularly at Platteville High School, a notable portion of this initiative focuses on expanding and providing state of

BUILDING THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION IN THE PLATTEVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT
A guest editorial feature from the Platteville School District. Westview Elementary School, and Resident Renovation on Monroe Street. Platteville High School Student Construction Projects can be seen at the House Build on Lutheran Street, Bike Shed Build at

the art classrooms for the Agriculture and Culinary programs. This decision reflects a commitment made by the district to equip students with practical skills and promote career readiness as past school years have shown an increased interest in these career fields.

To ensure the success of these educational initiatives, collaboration with industry and community partners is crucial. Over the course of the next two years, the Platteville High School construction classes will be taking on a brand new venture, a whole house build, giving students hands-on experience in all of the steps necessary to complete a project of this magnitude. Through the generosity and support of local Platteville residents, Bill & Jean Sanders, the owners of the house site, this opportunity is

available to our students. These partnerships create a connection between the classroom and the technical world, offering any student the exposure to potential careers and further enhance their lifelong learning.

In order to cultivate future generations of students with the confidence, knowledge, and skills to pursue these careers, the district’s vision is to build on the foundation of experiences available to students. By providing opportunities for practical learning through industry partnerships, students are inspired to develop their own ventures and spirit for entrepreneurship. This can be seen with the high school’s Work-Based Learning program where students in 11th or 12th grade have the option to substitute time in the classroom to pursue an experience-based learning oppor-

tunity. It is exciting to see these students embark on these ventures while making a meaningful impact in their communities, contribute to the growth of these sectors, and secure their own future successes.

We are so grateful to the entire Platteville community for their continued support, investment, and impact on our students. As a school district, we feel it is imperative to highlight the positive changes to the future of education here in Platteville and recognize it would not be possible without the dedicated teachers, staff, and stakeholders that make them possible. As schools continue to embrace and prioritize hands-on learning, they empower students to excel academically, explore their interests, and embark on fulfilling and successful futures.

AMENDED ORDINANCE ADJUSTS SPEED LIMIT ADJACENT TO THREE CITY PARKS

With the recent opening of the Platteville Inclusive Playground, increased traffic in the area of Smith Park, the Platteville Family Aquatic Center, and Legion Park has led to the Common Council reviewing the speed limit near these three areas.

At the Tuesday, July 11 meeting, the Common Council voted to create a "15 MPH When Children Are Present" speed limit on Pitt Street in front of Legion Park, Sylvia Street in front of

NEW FACES AND TRANSFERS

the Platteville Family Aquatic Center, and on Camp Street near the Platteville Inclusive Playground at Smith Park. (For a detailed map, please

visit www.platteville.org.) City crews have recently installed signs reflecting this change. State Statutes allow cities to create the 15 MPH speed limit zones near parks where children are likely to be present – similar to a School Zone.

This ordinance will repeal the ordinance in 2002 establishing 15 MPH between Memorial Day and Labor Day on Pitt Street and Sylvia Street, and establish the same speed limit only when children are present.

Enslaved, Indentured, Free

Historian Mary Elise Antoine will discuss her latest book, Enslaved, Indentured, Free: Five Black Women on the Upper Mississippi, 1800-1850. Her book shines a light on five extraordinary Black women—Marianne, Mariah, Patsey, Rachel, and Courtney—whose lives intersected in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, during these seminal years. Focusing on these five women, she explores the history of slavery in the Upper Mississippi River Valley, relying on legal documents, military records, court transcripts, and personal correspondence.

Mary Elise has served as president of the Prairie du Chien Historical Society and is a former curator of Villa Louis Historic Site.
