C’est la méthode que j’ai choisie pour mettre en avant la situation des couples de “l’union civile” en Italie, ceux qui n’ont pas l’approbation de la société. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION ? L’intérêt documentaire des changements internes de la société italienne. TES PROJETS ? Un projet qui nous documenterait sur la solitude sociale.

#ATXKIDS CETTE SERIE… A l’âge où nos parents nous responsabilisent en nous laissant seuls au domicile familial pour plus de quelques heures, on se met à fantasmer sur une vie permanente dans une grande maison à l’abri de toute autorité. Les bas loyers d’Austin, Texas, autorisent les kids à vivre dans ces grandes maisons et le rêve devient réalité. Des logements comme un moyen de plus de s’exprimer et de se réunir, ces lieux étaient pour moi le reflet de l’image publique de ces kids que je me devais de photographier. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION ? Je pense trouver mon inspiration dans toute forme de création (musique, cinéma, photo...) mais aussi dans ma rencontre avec mes sujets. Je vois la photographie comme une moitié de la production, complétée par ce que le photographié aura à me donner. TES PROJETS ? En ce moment, je prépare un sujet sur les stations balnéaires hors saison qui prendra probablement la forme d’un reportage.
THIS SERIES… When our parents start treating us like adults by leaving us home alone for a few hours, we start to fantasize about a permanent life in a huge house, free from authority. Low rents in Austin, Texas, allow kids to do so, and their dream comes true. Houses as another way to express oneself and hang on... To me, these places were the reflection of these kids’ public image, and I just had to shoot it. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION ? I guess I find my inspiration in every form of creation (music, movies, photography...) but also, every time I meet my subjects. To me, photography is the first half of the production, which is completed by what the subject is giving me. YOUR PROJECTS ? INTERVIEW TON ART… J’aimais déjà dessiner et peindre quand j’étais enfant, comme tout le monde je pense. Mais mon art est surtout un moyen de trouver un sens aux questions que je me pose, à mes idées. Des idées que je ne peux, la plupart du temps, exprimer par des mots. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION ? Quand je veux dessiner, j’ai l’habitude de repenser à mon enfance. Je pense que tout vient de la nature, de l’enfance, des rêves... Nous sommes tous connectés par ces éléments, ils font partie de nous tous. TES PROJETS ? Je travaille sur un livre pour enfants et je prépare une exposition. J’ai également l’intention d’ouvrir une boutique de jouets d’art où je pourrais aussi vendre mes peintures et mes esquisses.
YOUR ART… I like drawing and painting since I was a child, as everyone I guess, but I feel my art as a way to understand my own questions and ideas, ideas that I’m not able to turn into words most of time. YOUR INSPIRATION SOURCES ? When I want to draw, I use to think about things I thought when I was a child. I think it all comes from nature, childhood and dreams, we all are kind of connected by those things, we all have been there. YOUR PROJECTS ? THE SONOROUS HILLS CETTE SERIE… Je l’ai faite pendant un séjour de trois mois et demi à Amman. Je suis parti me promener, tout curieux que j’étais dans ce nouvel environnement. J’étais envahi par des nouveaux visages et des endroits fabuleux et chaque épiphanie a nourri mon amour pour cette ville. Toutes ces images sont les évidences visuelles de mes allers et retours aux collines sonores d’Amman. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION… La présence humaine, avec son quotient émotionnel, est parfois trop forte. La manière dont elle crie pour attirer l’attention en devient presque insultante. Comme un point rouge sur fond vert, comme un éclair dans la nuit. Pour équilibrer cette force j’ai besoin d’un fond, un espace qui, en négatif, définit les contours du visage. A travers cet espace supplémentaire, je crée une histoire complète. La clef de ma recherche réside dans le dialogue entre la personne et le fond ; parfois je pense que je ne fais pas le portrait d’une personne dans un fond, mais d’un fond avec une personne, et parfois c’est l’inverse. Le fond exprime la peur, le bonheur, le désespoir ; il exprime les circonstances à travers une atmosphère. TES PROJETS… On peut les voir sur mon site.
THIS SERIE… This serie was made during my 3,5 months stay in Amman. I was wandering around the city, feeding my curiosity within this new surrounding. New faces, amazing places were floating by and each epiphany let my love for the city grow more and more. All images are findings and visual evidences of my ways up and down the sonorous hills of Amman. YOUR INSPIRATION SOURCES… Due to the natural dynamic and complexity of the individual, I have always been drawn to portraiture. I photograph persons to whom I feel an initial attraction and try to reflect this force in images. A power that you cannot describe in words or in rational concepts but it captures the attention and creates a strong curiosity, a sort of addiction not only to body shapes, eyes, skin tonalities, but to what is behind: the thoughts and the mental state of that persons. And I feel a sort of instinct of possession, a desire to materialize the moment that this person is living. The human presence, with it’s emotionality, is some times too strong ; it is almost insulting, shouting to get all the attention: Like a red dot in the green, like a flash in the darkness. To balance that force I need the background, the space that as a negative form defines the contour of the figure. Through that supplementary space I create a whole story. The key of my research lies in the dialog between the person and it’s background ; sometimes I think I am not portraying a person in a background, but the background with a person ; sometimes it is the opposite. The background speaks about fear, happiness, peace, desperation; it speaks about the circumstances through an atmosphere.There is one basic element that is crucial to bring all the elements together: The light, like a thread that creates structure and consistence in a tissue. The magical substance of photography; it is a physical condition that contains many extraordinary qualities. The photography is a chemical reaction in which the light is transcripted in a surface. CETTE SERIE... Est un remède contre le sentiment d’absurde, l’écœurement d’images et d’informations contradictoires, incomplètes, imprécises, qui nous assaillent chaque jour. Un remède, aussi, contre les promesses et les ordres de la publicité. Parfois, je découpe, et parfois je déchire... pour montrer la vitesse, une certaine sauvagerie des associations mentales. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION ? Avec mon producteur Jay Alansky, on cherchait un artwork pour mon album «L’avenir n’est plus comme avant» (mars 2011 / distrib. Discograph), et je suis tombé sur une pile de vieux magazines scientifiques... La poésie de certaines phrases, de certains titres, m’a inspiré ce petit monde d’une modernité surannée, qui «répond» bien au titre de l’album et à nos choix sonores. TES PROJETS ? J’aimerais faire des concerts dans une galerie, au milieu des collages, puisqu’ils sont nés ensemble. Cela sortirait à la fois de la routine des expositions, et de celle des concerts pop. Il me faut un endroit qui ose l’expérience, où l’on puisse apporter un piano... Et puis je prépare l’artwork du 3ème album de mon groupe peppermoon, encore un collage, mais dans un style plus doux.
THIS SERIES... ...Is a remedy for the feeling of absurd, the disgust provoked by images and contradictory, incomplete and imprecise information we deal with every day. A remedy for promises and advertising orders. Sometimes I cut, sometimes I tear... To show the speed, a certain wildness in mental associations. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION ? My producer Jay Alansky and I were looking for an artwork for my record «L’avenir n’est plus comme avant» (“The future isn’t what it used to be” - March 2011 / Discograph) and I tumbled on a pile of old science magazines... The poetry of some sentences and titles inspired me and this small world of an outdated modernity which sticks to our record’s title and our sonorous choices. YOUR PROJECTS ? I’d like to play in a gallery, in the middle of my collages, because they all came out together. It would get me out of my routine concerning both gigs and exhibitions. I need a place where people would dare to do so, where I could bring a piano... PARIS, SA RUE CETTE SERIE… J’ai choisi un noir et blanc contrasté correspondant, à mon avis, au caractère réel, c’est-à-dire abrupt et direct des rues de certaines parties de Paris, comme Barbès ou Belleville. UNE POPULATION… Paris est plus que jamais une ville composite où se côtoient de nombreuses communautés. TES PROJETS… Une série sur les rues de Tokyo.
THIS SERIES… I chose a contrasting black and white which, in my view, conveys the real, harsh and direct character of some streets in Paris, such as Barbès or Belleville. PEOPLE… Paris is more than ever a composite town where numerous and varied communities live side by side. INTERVIEW CE COURT... Ce court, «Fusion Man» s’inscrit dans une collection pour lutter contre l’homophobie. C’est une commande de l’INPES pour essayer d’endiguer le suicide des jeunes homosexuels. Le super héros gay, le vilain homophobe, permettent de sortir des cadres pour montrer le bullying dont sont victimes les jeunes homos au quotidien, tout ça sans rentrer dans le pathos à la française. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION ? Je suis un geek, je dessine des super héros depuis que je suis tout petit. Marvel, DC. Mon rêve : bosser pour Stan Lee. Ce court, pour moi, c’est du pain béni. Sinon, fan de Fellini, la fantaisie, la folie des personnages. J’aime les gens à part, les personnes atypiques qui cassent les codes. Grace Jones, Jerry Lewis, Jim Carrey, Louis de Funès, Brigitte Fontaine, Philippe Katerine... Le corporate m’ennuie. TES PROJETS ? La série adaptée du court. Un super héros gay honteux contre des super vilains aux pouvoirs idiots. Sinon, j’ai écrit un long, une comédie, qui détourne les films de genre sur la mafia, qui s’appelle «Rock Me Mafia». C’est une comédie déjantée genre «Very Bad Trip», une satire sociale qui revisite tous nos dysfonctionnements sur un ton super décalé.
THIS SHORT MOVIE... This short movie, «Fusion Man», belongs to a selection of short movies made to fight homophobia. It’s an order from the INPES to fight against suicide inside the gay community. The gay super hero and the homophobic villain enable us to show the bullying young gays suffer on a daily basis, without any huge French sense of drama. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION? I’m a geek. I’ve drawn super heroes since I’m a kid. Marvel, DC, my dream: work for Stan Lee. This short movie is a godsend for me. I’m also a fan of Fellini, the fantasy and insanity of his characters. I like unusual people, the ones who break the codes. Grace Jones, Jerry Lewis, Jim Carrey, Louis de Funès, Brigitte Fontaine, Philippe Katerine... Corporate bores me. YOUR PROJECTS? A series inspired from this short movie. A gay and shameful super hero against supr villains with stupid powers. I also wrote a script for a feature film, a comedy which divert mafia movies and which I called «Rock Me Mafia». It’s an insane, « Very Bad Trip » like comedy, a social satire which emphasize all our little malfunctions on an offbeat. FAUX AMIS PHOTOGRAPHE
PAYSAGER LE COLLECTIF FAUX AMIS... Nous nous sommes rencontrés aux arts décoratifs de Paris. Nous travaillions déjà un peu ensemble là-bas et, à la sortie, il nous a semblé naturel de continuer. Nous avons donc créé le collectif en 2008 et, depuis, nous faisons des projets, expos, résidences, etc., ensemble. Travaillant principalement autour de l’image photographique liée au texte, ou du moins, au récit, notre pratique s’étend aussi au son, à la vidéo, à la sculpture ou à l’installation. A PROPOS DE CETTE SERIE... Nous l’avons réalisée lors d’une résidence à Fontenay-le-Comte en Vendée. Cette série, non préméditée, s’est imposée d’elle-même, comme une réaction au milieu dans lequel nous étions immergés. Beaucoup de lieux vides, à l’abandon, nous paraissant comme des espaces indéfinis ou à redéfinir. Paysager, comme faire paysage, être un paysage en devenir. VOS PROJETS EN COURS... Nous reprenons des ateliers artistiques à la rentrée, Lionel expose à la QPN de Nantes, nous venons d’exposer une série, Les lecteurs, dans une bibliothèque, et nous préparons des dossiers à envoyer pour de nouveaux projets. Nous préparons aussi une exposition à Dijon, dans une galerie associative, Nü Kozä. Nous essayons aussi, chacun, de continuer nos recherches personnelles en parallèle.
FAUX AMIS : A COLLECTIVE... We met in Paris while studying Decorative Arts. We created the collective in 2008 and then started to have common projects, exhibitions, residencies. We work mainly on the photographic image linked to the text but also sound, video, sculpture and installation. ABOUT THIS SERIES... We made it during a residence in Fontenay-le-Comte, Vendée. This series was spontaneous and grew on as a reaction against the environment we were living in. So many empty and abandoned places look like indefinite spaces or to be redefined. YOUR CURRENT PROJECTS... Lionel is going to exhibit his art at the QPN, in Nantes. We’ve just exhibited another series, called The Readers, in a library. INTERVIEW TA TECHNIQUE ? Je me sers de fusain compressé ou de craie à l’huile pour mes dessins, de peinture à l’huile (+ craie parfois) pour mes toiles. Mes instruments de travail se sont créés au fil du temps, ils me servent à enlever, racler, ajourer, travailler la toile. J’utilise souvent du coton brut, j’ai besoin de matériaux qui résistent et qui ne «plient» pas aux premiers coups de spatules. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATIONS ? Elles sont multiples, littéraires et musicales principalement, parfois humaines ou liées à la nature, mais toujours dans l’émotion. Relire des grands textes qui m’ont construite (Kerouac, Tanizaki, Dagerman) et qui m’ont (en substance) apporté la force nécessaire à la création ; et découvrir de nouveaux auteurs/musiciens/plasticiens. Tout cela fait partie des bases solides de mes inspirations. TES PROJETS ? Peindre «mes» temples grecs, continuer à garder une totale intégrité dans mon processus pré et post création.
YOUR TECHNIQUE ? I use charcoal or crayon for my drawings, oil paint for my paintings. I’ve created my tools little by little. I use them to take off, scrape off, pierce an opening and work on the canvas. Most of the times, I use untreated cotton ; I need materials which resist and don’t « fold » at the first stroke of spatula. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION ? They’re varied, mainly literary and musical, sometimes human or linked to nature but always emotional. Every time I read texts that built me (Kerouac, Tanizaki, Dagerman) and brought me enough strength to create and discovering new authors/ musicians/plasticians are my daily basis of inspiration. LINEA CETTE SERIE… La série LINEA représente une possibilité de définition de l’érotisme par rapport à notre perception visuelle et face à une très petite quantité d’information. C’est une recherche qui date du tout début des années 80 et que je continue aujourd’hui. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION… Je suis un photographe de l’érotisme et j’ai commencé à faire ça il y a 30 ans. J’ai étudié tous les plus grands maîtres italiens et français mais, aujourd’hui, c’est le cinéma que je regarde avec passion. C’est en particulier Wong Kar-Wai que j’aime le plus. TES PROJETS… Actuellement, pour mes shootings, j’ai déménagé du studio aux appartements. Ma nouvelle série “eyes wide shut”, en couleur pour la première fois après 30 ans, est un homage à Kubrick mais aussi aux atmosphères poétiques de Wong KarWai. Preview sur mon blog.
THIS SERIES… This series represents a possibility to define eroticism through our visual perception, and through very little information. It’s a research I started in the early 80s. I’ve been working on it ever since. YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION… I’m an eroticist photographer and I started 30 years ago. I studied all the Italian and French masters but now, my passion goes to the movies. Wong Kar-Wai’s in particular. YOUR PROJECTS… At the moment, I moved from my studio to an apartment for my shootings. DISCARDED COMMENT EST NEE CETTE SERIE ? Cette série est née de ce qui m’a le plus marqué : le regard (et l’esprit...) depuis que je suis arrivé à Paris pour y travailler il y a un an. J’ai ici vraiment la sensation d’une coupure entre l’intérieur (un appartement, un magasin) et l’extérieur (la rue) dans laquelle des objets sont abandonnés sur un trottoir, tout comme des êtres humains, à la dérive sur une mer de bitume. J’ai souhaité provoquer un questionnement sur la manière dont la consommation nous pousse à continuellement amasser et nous débarrasser d’objets rapidement démodés et comment cette même consommation continue de créer une misère que nous évitons de regarder en face. LE BLANC... Le blanc symbolise à la fois la pureté et l’absence. C’est tout le paradoxe de cette couleur qui représente tout autant l’absence de couleur que leur somme... VOS PROJETS... Je développe actuellement tout un travail sur les relations qu’entretient l’homme avec la nature et, plus largement, avec son environnement et avec lui-même. Ecologue de formation, je suis très sensible à la place de l’homme dans la nature et à la manière dont celui-ci interagit avec son milieu et ses semblables... Cette recherche pourrait se résumer dans cette phrase de Patrick Blandin : «Penser la nature, c’est penser l’homme».
TELL US ABOUT THIS SERIES... In Paris, I really have the feeling of a gap between the inside (an apartment, a shop) and the outside (the street) where things are left aside on the pavement. I wanted to start a questioning about the way consumption pushes us into gathering and then getting rid of things quickly outdated, and the way consumption goes on creating a misery we can’t even face. WHITE... White symbolizes both purity and absence. This is the paradox of this color which represents both the absence of colors and their sum... YOUR PROJECTS... I’m working on the relationship between man and nature and more precisely his environment and himself. I’m an ecologist and I’m very aware of man’s position in nature and the way he interacts with his environment and people of his kind. INTERVIEW TON UNIVERS ? Les dessins présentés sont réalisés au jour le jour, ils ont pour thème mes souvenirs, mes rencontres... Je prends souvent pour cible des gens de mon entourage afin de tenter de fixer des expressions, des sentiments... Des instants ! Colorés me direz-vous ? ... Et oui je n’imagine pas la vie, les sentiments, et les expressions sans la couleur... Plus qu’un dessin, c’est aussi une façon de retranscrire les émotions. TES SOURCES D’INSPIRATION ? Tout ce qui m’entoure. TES PROJETS ? Ayant terminé mes études récemment dans le domaine de l’art et du design, je cherche maintenant à me développer dans l’univers du graphisme et de l’illustration.
YOUR WORLD ? The drawings here presented are made day after day, they feature my memories and encounters… I usually aim at the people in my immediate surroundings, capturing their expressions and feeling… capturing moments ! You find them colourful ? … That’s a fact ; I cannot depict life, feelings and expressions without colours. These are more than mere drawings ; they are a way to transcript feelings.
