CEO’S Message Dear special guests, friends and supporters, A warm welcome to the latest edition of our Bulletin! There’s plenty to report from around our various destinations in Indonesia, and much to look forward to over the coming weeks and months. With some spectacular festivals on the horizon, along with the general elections and the coming of Spring, now is a time of great excitement and fresh opportunities. We look forward to sharing it with you! Last month, we celebrated our ten-year anniversary of operations in Indonesia back where it all began, in our very first property; Plataran Canggu Resort & Spa. On February 1, we welcomed several wedding organizers, travel partners, online travel agents and various media professionals to join us for ‘Dasa Juang Plataran Indonesia.’ This was an evening of celebration and appreciation, featuring a gala dinner, live music, speeches and awards. It was our chance to say thank you to many of the terrific partners and friends with whom we have shared our journey over the past decade. The evening also marked the launch of our #hospitalitywithimpact campaign, created to build on the positive impacts of tourism and preserve the unique qualities of Indonesia for future generations. Indonesia is set to celebrate two wonderful occasions of its own during the next two months; first with the Balinese Day of Silence (Nyepi) at the beginning of March, and then the Easter holiday in April. These two religious celebrations perfectly embody the diversity and cultural complexity of our nation, and are occasions that will be celebrated with both joy and respect at Plataran resorts in various locations throughout the archipelago. We hope you can join us! For those in need of a quick weekend getaway over the coming months, I’d certainly recommend a journey to the wild and wonderful West Bali National Park. Here you’ll discover Plataran L’Harmonie, comprising Plataran Menjangan Resort & Spa and Bajul Eco Lodge; the perfect place to explore one of Indonesia’s most captivating wilderness locations, host a family gathering or even a corporate event. Just across the channel, the blue sulphur flames and otherworldly views of Kawah Ijen are waiting to be explored. Speaking of awe-inspiring views, our resorts throughout Indonesia have been built in harmony with the landscapes that inspired them, and are designed to accentuate the beauty of their surroundings. This makes them a uniquely unforgettable backdrop for weddings. Plataran Bromo and Plataran Borobudur in particular are the embodiment of everything we love about our nation; spectacular nature, unique history and the artistry of design inspired by our shared cultural heritage. We look forward to welcoming you to Plataran during March and April, when we hope to share with you the many and varied wonders of Indonesia. Salam Plataran, Yozua Makes Chief Executive Officer

Day of Silence. Also known as the Day of Silence, Nyepi is a unique Hindu festival, celebrated all over Bali and throughout the ancient Tengger communities surrounding the slopes of Mount Bromo in Java. For 24 hours there’s no traffic, no fires, no music, work, entertainment or travel. These celebrations mark the beginning of the Saka New Year and are a time when the Balinese and the villagers of Bromo traditionally purge evil spirits from their communities. In the days and weeks leading up to Nyepi, Bali and Bromo are bustling, colorful and culturally compelling places to be. In a ritual known as the melasti pilgrimages, villagers take sacred relics down from shrines in their local temples, then take them to the sea or to rivers for ablutions. The result in Bali is a coastline packed with communities dressed in their finest clothes and carrying precious artefacts; it’s the island at its beautiful best. Pilgrims begin to appear around the smoking craters and decorated shrines of the Bromo caldera too. On the eve of Nyepi, giant demonic statues called ogoh-ogoh appear in Bali. Made of bamboo and colorful paper, these grotesque gargoyles symbolize malevolent spirits. After they have been paraded around the village, the Ngrupuk ritual takes place, in which the ogoh-ogoh are ceremonially burned. This whole process is referred to as the bhuta yajna ritual. Nyepi is a time for peace and contemplation; a day of serenity in between carnivals and chaos. Whether you’re staying with Plataran in Bali or Bromo, join us in making this event another spectacle to remember. This year, Nyepi will be celebrated from 6AM on Thursday, March 7 until 6AM the following morning.

Above and Below Water. When the hustle and bustle of the city gets too much, it’s time for a road trip. The island of Bali and the coastal town of Banyuwangi on the eastern tip of Java have many things in common; a strong shared heritage, awe-inspiring wilderness areas, and locations of outstanding natural beauty. They are also connected by a route that threads each of these wonders together, creating the trip of a lifetime. Whether starting in Denpasar and heading to Banyuwangi, or vice versa, this epic journey is like an Indonesian equivalent of Route 66, complete with steaming volcanoes, colorful coral reefs and the white sands of idyllic tropical beaches. The northwestern tip of Bali is home to West Bali National Park; 382 hectares of protected natural habitat comprising mangroves, lowland rainforest, savannah and sandy beaches; a haven for wildlife such as kingfishers, monkeys and the endangered Bali starling. Nearby Menjangan Island is a secluded and serene speck of land floating offshore, home to wild deer and the occasional Buddhist shrine, and ringed by pristine coral gardens that make the island a divers’ paradise, packed with underwater treasures just waiting to be explored. Just across the Bali Strait is the eastern edge of Java, where the brooding silhouette of Mount Ijen looms on the horizon. Rising 2,799 meters (9,183 ft) above sea level, this spectacular volcano is home to the world’s largest sulphur lake, where miners brave the elements to harvest minerals directly from the smoking vents. Trekking up here is like a visit to the moon; this otherworldly place is like a different planet to the tropical paradise below, but has its own brutal beauty. The journey between Banyuwangi and Denpasar takes you through some of the most attractive and culturally rich landscapes Indonesia has to offer. From below the waves to above the clouds, the trip is packed with action, adventure and the epic drama of Indonesia; a country of contrasts, contradictions and dazzling beauty.

Many of these activities focus on wellness, meditation and cultural immersion, allowing our guests to discover the richness of Bali’s heritage through its rituals and ceremonies. In one selfcleansing ritual, guests can discover Balinese cultural customs known as ‘Sancita Karmaphala’; emphasizing mindfulness and the spiritual significance of living in the moment. To help our guests prepare for these unique and complex ceremonies, there are many things Teja must prepare. Balinese offerings known as ‘banten’ or ‘pejati’ must be put together, while a priest who can lead the ritual also has to be found. Teja also prepares a complete Balinese traditional outfit for guests, so they can wear the sacred garments during their cleansing ritual at a small temple located in our hotel area. Ajat Sudrajat Plataran Bromo Resort & Venue Ajat is the horse nurse at Plataran Bromo, where he cares for the resort’s four horses: Si Bro, Jackson, Black Sweet and San Diego. Helped by his colleague Luxman Nul Hakim, Ajat is an accomplished rider who understands the needs and characteristics of each of his horses. Every day he cares for their health, hygiene and dietary requirements, while also helping guests who want to schedule horse riding around Plataran Bromo.

Native to the area, Ariadi is an experienced member of the team at Plataran Canggu, who provides guests with valuable and in-depth insights into Bali’s landscapes, traditions and communities. To prepare for the Village Cycling program, he first checks the condition of all bicycles, helmets and safety equipment to be used each day. He then leads the briefings with guests before the activity begins, providing useful information about safety, security and the routes to be passed. Setting off from Plataran Canggu, he guides our guides to an area of rice fields in the village of Umalas, helping them to find the most beautiful and picturesque spots on the journey, before leading them back to Plataran Canggu.
