Trusted, Expert Healthcare All are welcome at Planned Parenthood Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas is a public health provider that receives little to no public funding due to Texas’ political climate and ideologically-driven policies that exclude Planned Parenthood from family planning programs in Texas. With donor and community support, Planned Parenthood continues to be an essential part of Texas’ medical safety net. Approximately 70% of Planned Parenthood’s patients have annual household incomes less than $25,000.

Insured patients choose Planned Parenthood because our health centers offer convenient, trusted healthcare services. Approximately 30% of Planned Parenthood patients use insurance for their visit. Many Texans, including LGBTQ+, male, and teen patients, choose Planned Parenthood because of our reputation for non-judgmental, expert healthcare services.

Healthcare and health education directly in the hands of Texans Accessing healthcare and educational services online was essential in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic advanced. The Planned Parenthood Direct telemedicine app, launched in 2018, allows patients to receive birth control pills, patch, or ring, emergency contraception, and urinary tract infection treatment without an in-clinic appointment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we added private video telemedicine appointments to expand virtual healthcare options. 17,739 patients received telemedicine services in 2020.

Telemedicine services joins a growing number of ways Texans can connect with us online, including the Spot On period tracking app, the Roo sex ed chat app, 24/7 online appointment booking, and the Chat/Text program.

Educational programming and workshops pivoted to online formats to ensure quality sex education remained available to teens, young adults, parents, and others during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chat/Text program allows Texans to anonymously ask questions about their sexual health for medically-accurate answers in Spanish and English from professional Planned Parenthood educators seven days a week.

Trusted, Expert Healthcare 54% pregnancies in Texas are unintended Unintended pregnancies increase the chances of negative health outcomes, including delayed prenatal care, premature birth, low-birth weight and other health complications.1 Currently, 54% of all pregnancies in Texas are unintended2, more than the national average of 45%3. In FY2015, Medicaid in Texas paid more than $402 million for newborns with prematurity and low birth weight.4

Planned Parenthood helps reduce unintended pregnancies Our health centers offer the full range of birth control methods available, including IUDs and implants, which are highly effective, long-lasting forms of contraception that can be out of reach for many Texans due to lack of insurance and cost barriers. Thanks to generous grants, IUDs and implants are accessible for patients at Planned Parenthood health centers.

For every dollar invested in publicly-funded family planning programs, the government saves $7.09 in Medicaid-related costs.5

To protect patients and staff, our health centers implemented protocols to ensure spatial distancing and enhanced screening and cleaning processes. Telemedicine services expanded to include private video conference appointments to allow more patients to receive virtual healthcare from home.

Community Health Education Texas has the fifth-highest rate1 of teen pregnancies and the highest rate of repeat teen births2 in the United States Planned Parenthood’s three-part approach to community health education engages parents, educators, and peers to reduce the rates of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in Texas. Our signature education programs provide the skills and support individuals need to make well-informed and positive decisions about relationships and sexual health.

Community health education programs are donor- and grant-funded, and available at no cost as a community resource for young people and adults.

In 2020, educational programs expanded online to ensure Texans continued to access sex education during the COVID-19 pandemic. This allowed educators from different communities to host online workshops, including this “Ask an Educator” event in October led by Marenid (Fort Worth), Francesca (Waco), and Cynthia (Austin).

Community Health Education Parents

Teens who talk about sex with their parent(s) or another trusted adult are more likely to postpone having sex and more likely to make healthier decisions about sexual behavior. We get the conversation started through Talk First! or ¡Hable Primero! workshops provided by video conference or in private homes, community meetings - anywhere eight or more parents request a workshop.

Educators

Planned Parenthood’s community health educators are trained to offer effective sex education interventions tailored to each group of adolescents and young adults. Lessons and curriculums are selected to match the needs of youth in schools, after school programs, juvenile detention programs, shelters, foster homes and other community settings.

Peers

The Austin-based Teen Council is a year-long peer education program designed to develop teen leaders through sexual health education training, empowering them to serve as peer educators.

TeenAge Communication Theatre (TACT) is an award-winning health education program featuring high school volunteers performing interactive theater pieces for other teens in the Dallas area to promote discussion and communication.

In 2020, TACT peer educators produced educational content for their peers on Tik Tok, Instagram, and YouTube.

Community Advocacy Standing up for Reproductive Healthcare Planned Parenthood creates communities where Texans are informed and engaged on issues impacting reproductive healthcare access and sexual health education. Supporters are encouraged to engage in conversations, develop and strengthen their advocacy skills, and stand up for healthcare, sex education, and access to safe, legal abortion.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Planned Parenthood staff and volunteer activists stayed connected virtually. Through a variety of online events, more than 800 supporters were able to learn about reproductive healthcare issues, urge people to vote, and connect with other advocates from around the state.

Additionally, supporters donated masks for Planned Parenthood patients who needed them, provided period kit supplies to local schools and shelters, and contributed to local food pantries. Volunteers contributed 1,270+ hours of their time participating in Planned Parenthood sponsored events and advocating on Planned Parenthood issues.

Community Advocacy Standing up for Reproductive Healthcare Planned Parenthood’s Generation Action program identifies and trains the next generation of reproductive health advocates in Texas. 2020 was especially challenging for students. As campuses closed, students continued to meet virtually — determined to continue their social justice work, volunteer, and learn from their peers. Planned Parenthood’s statewide Youth Power Fellowship brought together 50 student leaders from schools across Texas to develop organizing, advocacy, and messaging skills to take back to their campuses.
