A new, modern funeral home to open By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

A lifelong town resident has transformed a vacant lot into a modern funeral home. “It’s pretty surreal still, but exciting,” said funeral home director Andrea Wasley, as she stood in a nearly finished suite of Plainville Funeral Home. The Broad Street business will hold a grand opening May 20.

The weather is warming and it’s time to start preparing for tick season. The unwelcome pests will show up any time now and can bite and infect people and their pets.

Since breaking ground in October, she said she has received a stream of support and interest from town officials and the community. “It’s exciting because I wanted it to have a locally-run feel,” she said. “It’s really a community project more

Schools seek endowment to fund projects By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

School officials are looking to create an endowment to fund innovative teacher projects. “I'm really looking for things that will be good for student learning,” said Superintendent Maureen Brummett,

who hopes to see the first $1,000 grant given out during the next academic year.

Brummett said she has been operating under tight budgets that have made it difficult to fund such projects.

The endowment, which would be operated by Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, would award one grant a year for projects going beyond the usual curriculum to help teachers educate their students.

“I think it’s very difficult to do much in the way of innovation when the budgets are so tight,” she said.

Health experts remind the public to be cautious and smart when dealing with these blood-feeding insects and the illnesses they may bring. Lyme disease may be the most common of the tick borne pathogens in the United States, but there are See Ticks, A8

“To see it go from the vacant gravel lot that it was to what it is today is amazing,” he said. “It’s such a transformation and it's something that Andrea should be very, very proud of. I wish that every development would put (in) that additional work and design. “She is a very personable and friendly funeral director who will make the trauma that people tend to experience when they go to these places” easier to cope with,” DeVoe added.

Town Economic Development Director Mark DeVoe said Wasley is “highly respected” and is doing a service to the town by developing the lot.

In order to award an annual grant of $1,000, the endowment would need at least $25,000 invested. “It’s really a very positive collaboration, Brummett said. The tentative plans were discussed at a March 30 Board of Education Finance subcommittee meeting, and the superintendent plans to bring the issue before the full board this month. In the meantime, further details of how the endowment would operate and fundraiser will be refined for the proposal. How the endowment would generate donations and the formation of a committee to review grant applications are issues still under deliberation. “We’re hoping once people see it’s funding really exciting projects residents and local businesses will begin making private donations to the fund, Brummett said. “I’ve very optimistic that the board will approve it. dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

COMMENTARY

Thanks for supporting school budget By Dr. Maureen Brummett

society.

With the passing of the Board of Education’s budget on April 24, we have come to a very positive outcome of a very long journey.

Plainville’s class of 2017 is a reflection of this vision. The class completed 4,962 hours of community service while also earning 1,131 Early College Experience (ECE) college credits (worth $1.1 million in savings to parents).

Averaging that with the budget increase of the past seven years is an annualized increase of 1.06 percent. We continue to work hard, through careful reductions, to sustain the well regarded schools and the investment in our students.

Seventy-two percent were accepted into their first choice college or trade preparation program. This success comes through your continued support. As we look forward, we an-

garten. We will also increase our safety and security with the addition of a School Resource Officer at Plainville High School. Our schools are a reflection of our community, and we believe that we all have much to be proud of. Thank you for supporting the budget! Dr. Maureen Brummett is superintendent of Plainville schools.

In developing Plainville’s budget this year, we had to address reduced funding from the state and extraordinarily large claims to our self-insured health fund. Those two budgeting challenges created a larger than usual increase of 5.13 percent. The actual spending on the school budget is a 1.39 percent increase with the rest being the result of significant health insurance increases.

Eighty-four percent of our students are pursuing higher education.

Ticks others. Kathryn Glendon, public health specialist for The Chesprocott Health District, said, “Anaplasmosis, formerly known as Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis (HGE) is a bacterial disease. It is transmitted to people by blacklegged ticks (deer ticks), the same ticks that transmit Lyme disease. Anaplasmosis is less common than Lyme disease.” So is Babesiosis, a protozoan infection. However, Glendon said up to 20 percent of patients diagnosed with Babesiosis also have Lyme disease. To keep ticks at bay, Glendon suggests using a chemical repellent with DEET, per-

methrin or picaridin. “Or purchase clothing with these chemical repellents in them,” she said. Also, Glendon urges people to wear light-colored protective clothing and to tuck pant legs into socks. And she has more tips. “Landscaping can affect the spread of ticks – reducing brush in a yard can reduce the number of ticks coming into a person’s lawn,” she said, adding: “Walk in the middle of a path in the woods rather than the outside of it.”

heart and even the nervous system.

Antibiotics are effective in fighting the disease but as recently as 2017, a 2-yearold from Indiana, Kenley Ratliff, succumbed to the rare tick illness.

Fortunately, the majority of cases of Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics.

Around here, however, when it comes to ticks, Lyme disease is the major concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, individuals and animals infected with Lyme disease can display symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue and a characteristic skin rash. Left untreated, the bacteria will travel to the joints, the
