BOE finds funds to keep two full-time positions

OUT & ABOUT

By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

The Board of Education will use savings in this year’s budget to add two full-time positions back into the next fiscal year’s spending plan which begins July 1. A literacy tutor at Wheeler Elementary School will move from part-time to full-time and a Plainville High School behavioral technician, another fulltime position, will be restored. At the Board of Education’s May 28 meeting, board member Foster White said the two positions are critical to the district. “I think we have to prioritize those things,” he said. The positions were initially part of a $100,000 cut to the board’s budget, which was in line with the April 30 budget referendum vote. The municipal budget was approved, but the school budget failed.

Thursday, June 6, 2019

The revised budget was passed 863-369 during a second vote, on May 14. Money freed up by prepaying some of next year’s contracts – using money in this year’s budget – made it possible for the two positions to be funded. The district is prepaying the cost of some diesel and legal fees and for the designing of a new entrance at Plainville High School to improve security – which will result in savings in the amount of around $130,000. Around half that will cover the reinstatement of the two full-time positions, with the rest hedging against the possibility that contract negotiations for janitors and office professionals will yield higher-thanexpected salaries. The remaining cuts the Board of Education made to reduce its budget to $38.2 million include leaving some positions unfilled temporarily, holding See BOE, A11

SOUTHINGTON — The community-run Southington Drive-In on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike kicked off its 10th season last week with a lineup of movies also celebrating big anniversaries.

“One of the movies we were able to get, and it has a 30year anniversary this summer, is the original ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,’” said Dawn Miceli, Town Council vice chairwoman and drive-in committee member. The movie will be shown

Saturday, June 29 at sunset. Gates open at 6 p.m. with activities and a snack bar. The season officially kicked off Saturday, June 1, with “Jaws,” a popular request every year. The drive-in has played the 1975 thriller about a killer shark nearly See Drive-In, A10

CATS OF THE WEEK

Brilliant BasementtnemesaB tnailli

Twinkle is a lovely, little tuxedo. She was found alongside the road in what was thought to be a hit-by-car incident. It turned out that Twinkle was just confused, because she was ready to have kittens and did not know what to do. Following a vet appointment, Twinkle had four kittens in a cozy bed in her foster home. Her kittens have gone home and now it's Twinkles turn to shine. She loves attention, loves people, and she will certainly add some sparkle to your home. Wizzard is a big, mellow pussy cat. He has a sense of humor and is always flipping for fun. Wizzard is good with other cats and loves to eat. For more information, visit hucatrescue.org, call 860-479-5173 or email hucatrescue@gmail.com.

As a leadership coach, I love it when ideas stick long after a conversation has ended. In the conversation, someone brings up an idea, information is provided, opinions are exchanged, and people can contribute, feeling connected to both the idea and each other. But then the conversation ends – and that’s the most critical part. Will the idea, thoughts, opinions and behaviors stick, thrive and build beyond that moment? May was Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s a month of reflection, reminding us to continue having

conversations about mental health long after its designated month has ended. In May, especially, one can see the power of both communication and sharing in action in our communities. While the public is educated on what mental health means and how it impacts others, those with mental health disorders are implored to continue taking care of themselves. And that self-reflection can apply to all of us, whether we have a diagnosed mental illness or not. Most people may think the phrase “mental health” covSee Emotions, A10

Drive-In From A1

every year as its first movie. “Our first year it was just, can we actually put out a product?” Miceli said of the decision by the town to take over the old privately owned drive-in that opened in 1955 and closed in 2003. “We have grown unbelievably.”

Last year the committee unveiled a new 22-foot tall entrance sign, a replica of the original 1955 sign. Other updates in the last decade include new projectors and painting the remaining screen saved from the original business. The Southington Drive-In is one of only three remaining outdoor venues in Connecticut, along with the Mansfield Drive-In Theatre and

Marketplace in Mansfield and Pleasant Valley Drive-In in Barkhamsted. All 15 movies of the 2019 summer season in Southington are hosted by a nonprofit or civic organization. Proceeds benefit local organizations. LePage said the assistant superintendent position could remain unfilled until September. Board member Becky Tyrrell said she had concerns that leaving positions open into the next school year could result in qualified candidates being hired by other districts.
