Wheeler renovation remains on schedule

‘Wonderful’ class moves on By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

While many new Plainville High School graduates are destined to go far and wide, speakers at the Tuesday, June 18 commencement ceremony urged them never to forget their hometown, and to remain true to themselves.

Town Councilor Jesse Gnazzo, whose son Benjamin was among the 2019 graduates, said he was once one of those who wished to leave Plainville after graduating. But no matter where he went, the town was always “home.” "No matter where you are in this world, whatever your situation is, you'll always

have a community, a family and a home right here in Plainville," Gnazzo said. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Brummett said in speaking with Principal Carl Johnson about his exit interviews with seniors, many students said they will miss PHS and the positive relationships they had with their teachers. The second phase of the upgrades include improvements to the gym, cafeteria, library and art classroom. Ongoing assembly of a new corridor connecting the east and west wings of the school, turning the “U” shaped building into a square, also will be completed by the fall, as well as a new courtyard with outdoor teaching areas. Principal Andrew Batchelder said he’s excited for “a new and enhanced learning environment that is modern, ADA complaint … and even more safe” come the fall. Volunteer drivers

Girls Rock

If you are an adult driver who wants to help others and support the Plainville community, Senior Transportation Services, Inc. could use your help. Come to a Meet & Greet at the Plainville Senior Center on Friday, June 28, 9:30 a.m., to find out how you can make a difference by providing as few as two rides a month to an older adult.

Middle and high school girls who have at least one year of experience singing or playing an instrument are invited to register for Girls Rock, a fun and non-competitive environment in which they can create music.

As a volunteer driver, you would drive persons to out-oftown medical appointments and to visit loved ones at health care facilities, using your own car. Volunteers can choose how many and which rides to provide, with a minimum of just two each month. In return, drivers receive reimbursement for mileage, supplemental automobile insurance and supplemental liability insurance.

Professional musician, author and educator Susan Mazer will offer Girls Rock Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 12, 9 a.m. to noon, at First Congregational Church of Southington, 37 Main St. For more information, call 860-302-8678.

Anniversary celebration The Plainville community will commemorate the town’s 150th anniversary with two days of family-

friendly events planned for Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21. The events will take place rain or shine. Anniversary events begin July 20 with a guided, narrated bus tour of 20 historic Plainville sites in existence in 1869, the year the town was incorporated. Buses will leave the Municipal Center parking lot starting at 10 a.m. and will run every half-hour until the last departure at 3 p.m. For those who prefer to take the tour independently, a tour map and brochure will be available. The fun continues July 21 with the Chip’s Family Restaurant 5K Road Race to benefit the Petit Family Foundation. Registration runs from 7 to 8:30 a.m., with a Kids’ Fun Run kicking off at 8:30 and the 5K Race/

Fitness Walk starting at 9. An old-fashioned family picnic at Norton Park will follow from 12 to 4 p.m. Picnicgoers will enjoy a variety of food trucks selling burgers and hot dogs, sausage & pepper grinders, fried dough and old-fashioned ice cream. Also, attendees can enjoy live music at the bandshell, games, activities and swimming.

Hall of Fame banquet Entering the Plainville Sports Hall of Fame this year will be Harold Bartley (Class of 1962), John Mangan (Class of 1964), Rose Marie Havelevitch (Class of 1975), Jesse Cavallaro (Class of 2004) and Coach Phil Mannarino. Also, John Bello will receive the Distinguished Service Award.

The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States clearly states that government shall not establish any religion or prohibit the citizens from freely expressing themselves religiously. The concept of the "separation of church and state" is not found in law or the Constitution but is used as a way to shut people up. Senior Center leaders fear offending people with a song. Well, I'm offended by anti-Christian and anti-freedom-of-religion attitudes, so then why is it acceptable to offend a Christian, like myself? A note to the thin-skinned: It's hard to go through life without being offended by something or other. Get over it. There will be an exception come December for religious Christmas carols. Could someone explain to me how the God of December is okay but the God of June isn't? Isn't He the same God?

Sanders to stay on as Interim Principal at Linden elementary By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Bringing families into the fold is a priority for Linden Elementary School Interim Principal Phil Sanders, who will be continuing in that role through the next school year. "I really believe that the family is an essential part of school success. I have to have the parents on board, I have to have their buy in," said the 23-year veteran of the district. Through events at Linden such as the Family Fest, choir concerts and the celebration for fifth graders leaving for middle school, Sanders has been working on re-establishing relationships with the community centered around the school. Sanders has been standing in as the interim principal since April, when his predecessor Paula Eshoo went on leave for an unspecified reason before retiring in June. He had previously been filling in for Melissa Orfitelli, assistant principal of Linden Street School and the Middle School of Plainville, when she went on maternity leave in December. Citing the difficulty of having one individual as the assistant principal of two schools, the decision was made to have Orfitelli serve as just the assistant principal at MSP and having Linden’s head teacher pick up the administrative work she did there. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Brummett said Sanders has been settling into the new job well, with teachers at Linden feeling well supported under his leadership.

Sanders said five years as the district’s elementary math and science instructional coordinator prepared him well for jumping into being principal. When the Next Generation Science Standards were unveiled, he visited each elementary classroom to help guide teachers in adjusting to the shift.

Scholarships The Plainville Fire Company has announced its memorial and education scholarships. Graduating senior scholarship winners are: Bailey Donovan, Benjamin Gnazzo, Cheyenne Gregory, Abby McGough and Payton Ziegler. Continuing education scholarship winners are: Benjamin Kall, Rebecca Kall, Caterine LaBella, Sydney McGough, Jeremy Myska, Victorica Plourde and Edgar Wynkoop.

Preschool program The Plainville Community Schools Preschool Program is accepting registration for children who will be age 4 by Dec. 31, 2019 and who were born between Jan. 1, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2015. "It's like looking at one grape, versus looking at an orchard of grapes,” Sanders said. "I find it to be very challenging and very engaging. I have to think about the whole scope of the building and always, always, always keeping in mind and focus on what's best for the students … as long as I have been able to keep the vision of the student in my mind, I've been able to make good decisions based on what's best for the student.” Sanders is looking forward to continuing those efforts next year. "I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to be the interim for the next year,” he said. “I'm looking forward to the challenges, I'm looking forward to the successes that we will see at Linden. Man charged with DUI found with gun, open beers By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff

PLAINVILLE — A Hartford man faces charges after police said he was driving under the influence and was found with a loaded gun and open beer cans in his car. Jose Carrion, Jr., 29, of 79 Julius St., Hartford, was arrested on Sunday and charged with criminal possession of a gun, weapon in a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, driving an unregistered vehicle, high beams, and minimum insurance.

On Sunday around 2 a.m. an officer driving on East Street saw a car driving in the opposite direction with the high beams on, according to police reports. The officer checked the vehicle’s registration, which was expired. The officer noted the driver, later identified as Carrion, took a wide right turn after the officer turned on the lights and siren.

Superintendent of Schools Maureen Brummett said the $23.5 million project remains on schedule to be completed in early 2020 and said the town may see some cost savings on busing should the pre-school rooms be ready quicker than was originally budgeted for. Most of the renovation’s expense is expected to be reimbursed by the state, with around $12.1 million anticipated.

Brian Goralski, board chairman, was joined by other board members in voting for Plantsville.

Plantsville parents argued that the school is named after the Plant brothers, who helped found that section of town. Residents of the village were also worried about losing the section of the town’s identity and history by renaming the school.

Plantsville became Zaya Oshana Elementary School after a 7-to-1 Board of Education vote last week.

A group of local residents petitioned the board to name a school after Oshana, the town’s longest-serving board member. That group will pay to change signage and make any other adjustments as a result of the new name.

At the end of last week’s meeting, the board voted to formally confirm the South End name, which makes changing it more difficult in the future.
