Kelli Parady has spent her life doing things that are a little, as she calls them, “crazy.” A 2003 Plainville High School graduate, Parady wrestled, ran cross-country and studied martial arts. She joined the Marine Corps (which she’s been in for 8 ½ years) and now she’s taking part in the Spartan Death Race in Pittsfield, Vt., an endurance race comprised of mud runs, obstacle racing, trail racing, physical challenges and mental challenges. It can last as long as 48 hours. “Everything I’ve done has been naysayers saying, ‘you can’t do that, why would you want to do that?’ I call what I do the path less traveled,” Parady said. Parady signed up for the June 15 race with a friend and knows nothing about what the race entails. None of the competitors do. “There might be some log running or we might be told to swim to the bottom of a river and find a rock with our number on it,” she said. So far, the Spartan Death Race organizers have done everything possible to make the race a difficult one. They’ve changed the lists of gear Parady needs to bring, changed the time and even sent the competitors rude emails to ‘go away’. “This is all part of the game,” she said. On average, only 15 percent of the competitors who enter the Spartan Death Race finish the event, according to the website, aptly named

I believe in teamwork.” Although Parady has participated in other Spartan races before, the death race takes the challenges to an entirely new level, she said. “I hope this brings my workout cycle to a new regime and gives me a different way of looking at physical fitness,” she said. “My goal is to complete the Marine Corps marathon. If I can complete this crazy death race, that race will be easy.”
