From The President One More Wave to One More Million My gratitude knows no bounds! We have been working with dogged determination to achieve the goals for Our Mission, Their Future since the summer of 2017. YOUR response to me, to Mr. Keough, to our Campaign Co-Chairs, John Marshall AFSC ’67 and Chuck O’Neil ’65 and members of the Leadership and Major Gifts Committee, and to the many volunteers who have stepped forward and stepped up has been quite simply: astounding!

We certainly have come a long way and while there have been challenges, with the exceptional support of our Board of Trustees, with the leadership of Board Chair John O’Connor ’85, we have addressed those challenges as they have arisen, and moved on to the next.

Our biggest challenge remains – to communicate to the entire CBA family that while we have seen great success, we have work to do in order to be able to achieve all the goals set forth for Our Mission, Their Future.

One more wave to one more million for Our Mission, Their Future.

We surpassed our goal for endowment growth, currently at more than $5 million – that’s $2 million OVER our goal. These funds will be invested in our endowment in perpetuity, allowing for more opportunities for students who face financial challenges to attend CBA. We have collected written pledges for more than $1 million directed for capital projects and nearly $4.8 million in unrestricted funds. The remaining balance is dollars designated for the Annual Fund – dollars that are spent each year to bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of a CBA education. Our grand total is more than $12 million… what fabulous news!

Even given these incredible numbers, there are campaign goals that have not yet been met.

In order to do so, to completely fund the construction projects AND the fund for performing arts, an additional $1 million is needed. We are branding this effort: ONE MORE WAVE TO ONE MORE MILLION! I remain hopeful and confident. I pray to God that the CBA Family will come forward and help achieve this final challenge and get us over the finish line. A Message From The Co-Chairs It has truly been a privilege to serve as Co-Chairs of Our Mission, Their Future! While we have work to do, we anticipate the campaign will serve as a demarcation point in the history of Christian Brothers Academy, given its historic accomplishments from a fundraising standpoint as well as the facilities improvements to the campus, the growth in our endowment, and the school’s demonstrated commitment to the performing arts.

ONE MORE WAVE TO ONE MORE MILLION! Why do we need one more million? The answer is really quite simple: one more million in unrestricted gifts will allow us to achieve all the goals to the fullest.

A strong endowment is critical to the future of Christian Brothers Academy and we are truly grateful to those who have passionately contributed to the substantial growth achieved through Our Mission, Their Future. Thank you!

Construction costs, originally estimated nearly three years ago, have skyrocketed, which caused the goals for the capital projects (entrance, alumni hall, student commons, dining center, library, innovation lab, and three new classrooms) to increase significantly.

The performing arts are a priority at CBA, there is no doubt. The school will invest to bolster our current programs and investigate growth opportunities. Additional funds must be raised to fulfill this goal.

Please join us as we make our commitment to fully achieve ALL campaign goals in ALL areas. You can help us cross the finish line by joining the wave to one more million!

The Al & Kathy Krause Legacy At CBA Al Krause’s dad provided a modest, happy lifestyle for his family by working as a machinist and shop supervisor at American Can Company in Geneva. Effects of the Great Depression permeated every aspect of life in the 30’s and the Krause family was no exception. Included in their daily chores was caring for chickens and chinchillas to provide additional income. Raised among these circumstances, Al’s strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were born.

“Make something of yourself.” His father’s words echoed, as Al proceeded to do just that: as Valedictorian of Waterloo Senior High School; a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and serving his Navy ROTC duty in San Diego.

He married his high school sweetheart, Kathy McNaney, and fathered three beautiful daughters: Pat, Peggy, and Kate and two sons, Jim and Steve (now deceased).

The young family settled in Skaneateles and Al put his architectural degree to work, eventually starting his own firm with Jack Quinlivan and Peter Pierik. The three formed QPK and were invited to design a new facility for Christian Brothers Academy.

The Randall Road school and its associated construction estimate were of the highest caliber and reliability. That first project was their initial step into successful, satisfying careers.

Al Krause is grateful to the Christian Brothers and the CBA Board of Trustees for entrusting their precious project to a brand new partnership of young architects whose impeccable reputation was built upon the projects’ success and notoriety.

Through the years, the Krauses—now married for 67 years— have come to fervently support Catholic education as a bastion for American society’s most important values. With that passion as their guide, they have generously supported projects at Christian Brothers Academy.

In 2000, when it was time to celebrate CBA’s Centennial anniversary, Al and Kathy were inspired to give back to the school by funding perpetual scholarships in the names of his partners: Jack Quinlivan and Peter Pierik.

Then in 2007, Al steadfastly served as co-chairman alongside Dr. Joe Smith ’64 (now deceased) of To Be The Best, an effort which, at that time, was the most successful

The Al & Kathy Krause Legacy At CBA Continued

comprehensive campaign in the history of Christian Brothers Academy. He helped achieve the campaign goals by challenging fellow donors to match his gift, thereby successfully securing additional major gifts for To Be The Best. At that time, he was compelled to give generously to CBA’s endowment to further the school’s goal to make CBA, and its Lasallian, Catholic, values-based education, accessible to all.

In 2008 Al, alongside Joe Smith, and former Principal, Brother Stephen McCabe, FSC, were awarded the CBA Alumni Association’s Purple and Gold Award. It was Joe and Al’s tenacity, passion and generosity of time, talent, and treasure that earned them a place among revered CBA icons.

In 2017, the school approached Al and Kathy once again to invite them to participate in Our Mission, Their Future. Once again, the answer was an unqualified yes! The couple was able to make a five year commitment using a combination of appreciated stock and required IRA distributions - tools which gave them a path to incredible generosity.

For this effort, the Krauses decided to designate their gift to Our Mission, Their Future to the significant capital improvements planned for the campus.

Their generosity has generated additional philanthropy by inspiring others to do the same.

Al Krause is a visionary and a devout Catholic, Kathy shares Al’s values and adds her strength and perserverence of mind, body, and soul. Together they are a force to be reckoned with. A force we are pleased and proud to have with us on our journey into a bright future for Christian Brothers Academy.

Celebrating CBA Parents Parents of students at Christian Brothers Academy Syracuse are a unique breed… committed, caring, loyal, and generous to a fault. The school relies on parent volunteers to run events like the Senior Fashion Show and the after prom party, provide refreshments for Open House and Honors Night, support the performing arts during rehearsals and showtimes and intermissions, support athletics through the Booster store, gameday concessions, selling admissions and 50-50… the list goes on and on and on!

We consider parents as critical partners, collaborating to create the magic that is the CBA family. After all, they’ve trusted us with their precious children – to mold them into world citizens who embrace Lasallian values – ready for college and all that life may hold for them. It is here that we plant the seeds of our shared Lasallian vision of service to others, belonging to a worldwide community, and internalizing and personalizing a Lasallian identity that is unique to each person.

It is with wonder and gratitude that we express enormous appreciation to the parents who, when invited to participate in Our Mission, Their Future, responded with a resounding yes! Dozens of parents have stepped up to be a part of this historic campaign. Principal Keough and President Brother Joe have met with many of our parents to talk about the initiatives – from endowment to campus improvements to the performing arts – and parents were anxious to help.

Commitments totaling $2.45 million from CBA parents were already made for this campaign!

This is a huge demonstration of the faith and confidence parents have in CBA today and tomorrow. They want their kids and future students to benefit from Our Mission, Their Future. And thanks to our parents, alumni, Board members and friends – they will!

A note to parents who have not had an opportunity to join the effort, we invite you to do so – One More Wave to One More Million will allow us to fulfill all the goals of the campaign. Join the wave!!

Campaign Construction Update – August 2019 Even before the ground breaking ceremony on June 11, crews were hard at work on the new and renovated spaces which are part of the Our Mission, Their Future campaign projects.

You can keep tabs on the construction progress online at the following website (special thanks to Janelle Little ’20 for the photography and website design): cbaconstruction.github.io We are pleased to present some of the design images and in-progress photos here, to give you an idea of what the final projects will look like and where we are in the process. The dining center is fully operational as of the first day of school – to the delight of our faculty and students. The goal for the front entrance to be completed is the week of October 21. The back of school projects (library, innovation lab and classrooms) are expected to be open by the second semester – January 2020.

The entire CBA community is looking forward to taking advantage of all the brand new finishes, signage, technology and great looking spaces! Feel free to stop in and see for yourself.
