Dave Marshall '02 To Lead His Alma Mater
Marshall ’02 To Lead His Alma Mater

Get To Know CBA’s Newest Principal Dave Marshall
Dave Marshall ’02 was recently named the 31st principal, and first alumnus administrator in CBA Syracuse’s 125-year history, following 26 Brothers and four lay administrators. Marshall graduated from St. John Fisher University in 2006, with a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education. He earned his master’s degree in integrating technology in the classroom from Walden University in 2009, a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Education Leadership from Le Moyne College in 2022, and an extension certificate in gifted education from Hofstra University.
Marshall first returned to CBA in 2008 to coach freshman basketball, while teaching in the North Syracuse Central School district. In 2015, he was named the coordinator of academic support services at CBA, a position he held for seven years, before serving as the school’s assistant principal for two years. During his time at CBA, Marshall also coached JV basketball for seven years.
Dave married Andrea Nicoletti, ‘01, in 2011. The Marshalls have three children: Santino (11), Antonella (9), and Francesca (6).
We recently sat down with CBA’s newest principal and discussed a number of topics, including his career path, his vision for the school, advice to new students and some of his favorite things.
When you were a student at CBA, did you ever envision being the principal of your alma mater?
“I am not sure I envisioned becoming a principal, however, I always knew I wanted to be in education, I just didn’t know in what capacity. I have always been a big believer of trusting the process God has in place for you. While we can’t predict the future, we always trust that God’s plan is bigger than the immediate moment, whether good or bad. Ultimately, I am here to serve our students and assist in carrying out the mission of
"Ultimately, I am here to serve our students and assist in carrying out the mission of our school, which is to provide a human and Christian education to all."
our school, which is to provide a human and Christian education to all. Whether that is through coaching, supporting student’s learning needs, or through school leadership, I have committed myself completely to God’s plan and assisting our students in becoming the best version of themselves.”
Who inspired you to get into teaching/education?
“I would have to start with my parents, specifically my mother. She is a life-long educator, having taught in elementary school and adult education. I grew up watching her prepare every night for her lessons and presentations, then later in life earning an additional master’s degree from Elmira College. She taught me that to be a successful educator, you can never become complacent and should always want to improve.”
Was pursuing a career in education your childhood dream? If not, what was it?
“I wouldn’t say it was my dream, but I always knew it was something I was supposed to be involved in. I honestly envisioned being a career basketball coach which, in a sense, is a teacher. When the challenging realities of coaching became clearer, I turned my focus to following in my father’s footsteps as an accountant. However, I would say a turning point in my life was when I was studying business in college and greatly struggling. After a few failed attempts at Accounting, I approached my parents and told them I didn’t think accounting or business was in my future. My parents agreed and admitted that they knew this was the case all along. When I pressed them about not advising me away from the business field and wasting two years of college, they stated that they trusted

I would find my own way. This may have been the most important lesson I have encountered in my life… to trust that God has complete control. When they asked what I wanted to do, without hesitation, I stated I want to be a teacher, and the rest is history.”
What do you see is the biggest challenge and reward of being principal?
“I would say that the biggest challenge is also the biggest reward. That of being principal at CBA is living up to the high expectations of the Brothers who have entrusted its

lay partners with carrying on the mission of educating all. Given the declining numbers of the Brothers, they had the foresight to pass this responsibility onto its lay partners. I fully recognize that this is an amazing gift and a huge responsibility. I am the 31st principal, and first alumnus administrator, in CBA Syracuse’s 125-year history following 26 Brothers and four lay administrators. I look forward to supporting our students, teachers, and families in continuing our tradition of excellence in all aspects of life.
What is one interesting fact that most people don’t know about you?
“I love to build and create. Growing up, I spent countless hours at my grandfather’s, Ed Campagna’s, workshop. I still use his leather-gripped hammer that is over 50 years old. I love to fix and update things around the house. I have completely renovated our bathrooms and kitchen, finished our basement, and built our deck. I can do just about any home renovation project including framing, electrical, plumbing, trim work, and painting. I am always doing some project around the house.”
Who was your favorite and most influential teacher at CBA?
“I would say every teacher had a significant impact on my life in one form or another. I could list the teachers at CBA whom I had at least one interaction with that greatly
Marshall ’02 To Lead His Alma Mater

impacted me. But one thing that I can say is that each teacher held me accountable for everything that I did… even for being in dress code! I am eternally grateful for the amazing example they provided to me during my time at CBA and they are a huge part of the reason I returned.”
Who do you admire most as a leader and why?
“My father, John Marshall ‘67 AFSC, is probably the person I admire the most as it relates to leadership. I have always admired his ability to remain calm and level-headed in any situation. He is a patient and quiet leader and has taught me that you don’t always have to have every answer in order to be a great leader. Oftentimes, being a great listener is the best way to lead. He is, undoubtedly, the person I admire the most as it relates to leadership.”
What do you like to do in your spare time, any hobbies?
“I love spending time with my wife and kids. We are definitely homebodies and do just about everything together. There isn’t much we don’t do without each other.
Rumor has it, you are a “Disney Adult”. Who are your favorite characters and attractions at Disney?
“Andrea and I spent our honeymoon in Disney, and it feels like we never left. We are a true Disney family and thank our blessings every day that we are able to provide these experiences to our kids. I love the Toy Story movies for their wholesome approach to life lessons about friendship. My favorite attraction at Disney is the Fantasmic show at Hollywood Studios. It covers the essence of all things Disney! But I am a roller coaster junkie, so I love all roller coasters. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is my new favorite ride!”
How has the school changed since you were here?
“I get this question a lot from my classmates and other alumni. In a sense, the school hasn’t changed. While we have done some amazing facility updates, it still has the same nostalgic feel as I remember in the mid-90s. My father, a ‘67 CBA graduate, walked the same halls and sat in the same classrooms as my brothers and I did. Thanks to our generous alumni and parents, in the last five years alone, we have been able to update our dining center and entryway, create a performing arts space, update our weightroom, replace the turf on the stadium field, add a state-of the art-engineering lab, and create an e-Sports room. However, I think the most significant change is how the culture of our school has evolved. We have embraced our identity even more as an inclusive Lasallian community. The community involvement in the Bridge 2 CBA Brothers program embodies what it means to provide a human and Christian education to all. I couldn’t be prouder of what CBA Syracuse represents today.”
As an alum and now principal, what advice do you give to a new CBA student?
“The most important thing our youth need to know is that failure and struggle are a significant part of life. I believe the challenges we face are more important for our growth than the successes. There will always be great times, and there will always be times of struggle. View those difficult times as a challenge from God. How you react through adversity says a lot about your character.”
What are your short- and long-term goals as Principal?
“My short-term goals are to build a cohesive administrative team that will stick together for a long period of time. Currently, we have an extremely dedicated, talented, and hard-working team which I believe will be together for many years to come.
“I am always aware of the ever-changing climate of education and our youth. I believe that education must

have a balance of traditional practice with a contemporary approach. My long-term goal is to continually evaluate and adapt our programming to ensure we are providing our students with the best academic, musical, artistic, and athletic experiences we can offer.”
Anything else you would like to add…
“My wife, Andrea, has been an amazing source of support before and throughout my time at CBA. She is the one who didn’t even think twice about me leaving my previous school to work at CBA and forced me to call Mr. Keough back immediately, even though I thought I should wait a day. She supported me through 14 years of coaching basketball at CBA, never once complaining about the number of hours spent away from her and our kids. When I approached her about getting my CAS, she didn’t hesitate, knowing it would be a financial sacrifice for our family. And when the opportunity arose to move into a school leadership role knowing that this commitment would significantly cut into our family time, she wholeheartedly supported me. I would not be the person I am today, nor would I be in this position, without her.”
A Few Of My Favorite Things…
Food: Anything my wife cooks! She is an amazing cook, and I have never had a bad meal.

Class of 1974 Jubilee Reunion

CBA Class of 1974 Celebrates 50th Reunion
The Class of 1974 gathered May 30—June 2 to celebrate their Jubilee Reunion.
Brothers came from all over the country, reconnecting with their high school buddies, recounting and reliving memories of their days at Randall Road. Stories of hitting the books, the field, the hardwoods, and lessons learned from the Brothers and each other were shared as if they had happened just yesterday.
Kicking off the weekend early on Thursday, May 30, Jubilarians gathered at the Marriot Hotel Syracuse for a cocktail party in the lobby. Fifty years peeled away in a matter of hours.
The festivities continued Friday evening as current CBA students welcomed their fellow Brothers back to school with a tour and a discussion about what life is like at CBA today. A highlight for both the alums and student tour guides.
After the school tour, more than 44 Jubilarians and their guests gathered in the Br. Joseph Jozwiak FSC Dining Center for a celebratory dinner sponsored by CBA. Joining the celebration were President Matt Keough, Chris Harrigan ’90, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Athletics Director Buddy Wleklinski ’75, and Mike Vavonese ‘76, Alumni Association President.

Saturday night, the group assembled at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville for the Class of 2024 Baccalaureate Mass, con-celebrated by the Rev. Chris Ballard and Rev. Paul English ’74. The Mass was highlighted by readings and songs performed by the CBA student choir, and the deceased members of the Class of 1974 were honored and remembered.
Sunday's Class of 2024 Graduation was the capstone event of the weekend. Members of the Jubilee Class were included in the formal procession, and each received a gift from CBA President Matt Keough. The gift was designed and created by a group of talented CBA art students, a truly meaningful keepsake of the weekend's festivities.
Mark Carroll and Ed Leone representing the Golden Jubilee Class, presented the school with a check for $314,020.74 to the school to establish a perpetual scholarship named for the Class of 1974. The gift will provide deserving CBA students the opportunity to continue the legacy of hard work, discipline, and excellence forged by 'Brothers' who have gone before them.

Reflections from Class of 1974
Class of '74 Reflections
Dave Ingram
“Wow, where do I even start? Our 50th high school reunion was an unforgettable blend of nostalgia, laughter, and connections. From the moment I walked into the Hotel Syracuse, I was greeted by familiar faces and hugs and handshakes, then instantly transported back to the carefree days of our youth. The stories and updates flowed freely, and it was remarkable to see how much we’ve all grown and changed over the decades. I was amazed at the diverse paths we’ve taken since our high school days, and it was heartening to see that the bonds we forged back then have stood the test of time. In summary, our 50th high school reunion was a resounding success. It was a wonderful celebration of our shared history and a testament to the enduring friendships we've built. A huge thank you to everyone who helped organize and attend — your presence made this milestone event truly special.”
Joseph Rulison
Fifty years in the making…a reunion that was a flash back to our time together as a Class, making our experience together frozen in time. The Reunion was an amazing celebration of CBA, camaraderie, success, family, sharing, and life. Thank you!”
Mark Grenga
It was a great time all through the whole weekend! Going back 50 years ago to relive those times with the many stories was truly memorable! Enjoyed seeing all classmates and the stories they told."
Fr. Paul English, CSB
"First, it was a wonderful time! Great to get together in so many activities with the men with whom I graduated 50 years ago! It's hard to believe it has been that long, but the nice thing was to hear where God has taken these classmates in those intervening years.
Second, I was so happy to be back on campus at CBA! The students who showed us around were brilliant! The little school has grown significantly and has kept up impressively with technology. I'm proud to say that my niece graduated a year ago from CBA, and it was special to see the classrooms, library and learning spaces from which she benefitted.
Then there is the dedication of you, Samantha, and the others who planned and thought so carefully about the details of the reunion weekend. I was delighted to be part of that, and grateful that it turned out so well!
A few of us were able to spend an hour or so with Jerry Riordan. Jerry was the amazingly inspirational coach of the Cross-Country and Track teams for so many years, and he inspired us on to successes beyond what we could even imagine. That was a particularly happy moment among many! He taught me to excel and to believe in myself and those lessons have guided me through these 50 years!
So grateful for CBA, for the education and the life lessons I received there, and for the friends who are all such wonderful men. Thanks, as well, of course, to you and the staff there!"
CBA is forever indebted to the Class of 1974 for their generosity of treasure, time, and spirit.
On Friday, May 31, a group of 21 early risers hit the links to enjoy a day on the golf course.
