COMEDIAN JEFF DUNHAM & CHARACTERS TO WELCOME 2012 IN PITTSBURGH Comedian ventriloquist, Jeff Dunham and his troupe of characters promise to send out the old year with plenty of laughs when the show comes to CONSOL Energy Center on New Year’s Eve. Dunham, the star of four Comedy Central specials, also wrote a New York Times Best Seller, “All By My Selves: Walter, Peanut, Achmed and Me.” He will appear with his well known “selves”, as well as two next generation newbies, Peanut’s Little Jeff and Achmed Junior who were introduced this fall in his fourth Comedy Central special, “Controlled Chaos.”

Talking about the upcoming Pittsburgh show, Dunham thinks that his new characters will stick with the audience when the show is over. He adds, “Walter’s divorce material is pretty darned water cooler friendly as well.” Anyone who has seen Dunham perform marvels at his ability to enliven his characters while keeping his own personality intact. What is the source of inspiration for his dummies? Dunham says, “Just living life and observing the world. Each character has a different genesis and there’s no formula. If I think it’s a funny idea and can write a few jokes for him, plus if I think he will appeal to a good percentage of the audience, then I’ll go with it. But along with the successful characters, there is the trunk full of the characters that I call, ‘What the hell was I thinking?’ Tony the Talking Meatball probably tops that list.” continued on page 6

If you “ mean of the

“Time and circumstance,” bring on the addition of new characters, according to Dunham who says. “If I feel it’s time, and there’s a new DVD down the road in the foreseeable future, I start thinking, considering, and looking. But on equal grounds, sometimes a new guy just pops into my head and he seems too good to pass up.” Does Dunham have a “favorite child?” “If you mean of the dummies, and not my actual children, I’d say that Walter is my favorite for writing material; Achmed is my favorite when it comes to playing internationally, and Peanut is my ~Jeff Dunham favorite when ad-libbing with a crowd,” says Dunham explaining, “I like to play to and with each one’s strengths.” Talking about which character he most relates to, Dunham says, “Each one in a different way. They are all a part of me, yet at the same time they are separate characters from me. When they make a statement, that isn’t necessarily what I, as myself, think. It’s a play or sitcom on stage and I am playing many different characters. So the short answer is: All of them.” Watching Achmed’s blood-shot eyeballs and bushy eyebrows express villainy or comedy, it is amazing to realize that Dunham builds his dummies himself. The comedian describes the process briefly: “Everything from sculpting the head first in clay, then making a silicone mold, then casting the head in fiberglass, installing the mechanics, painting the head, wigging it, building the body, then clothing it.” Dunham, a global comedy phenomenon, speaks no Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian or Afrikaan, the official languages of some of the international venues he has played. His relationship with his characters transcends anything that might be lost in translation. “I think the characters are universal and relatable as is the subject matter and comedy. Funny is funny, even if you have to translate,” he says. Dunham’s Pittsburgh show begins at 3 p.m. and as to how he plans to send out the old and welcome new, he says, “You tell me! What’s the best way to ring in New Year’s in Pittsburgh?”

dummies, and not my actual children, I’d say that Walter is my favorite for writing material.

Asked what he’s looking forward to in 2012, Dunham jokes a bit, “Talking about the crazy thing I was doing at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31st, 2011 in Pittsburgh. “Besides that, I am honestly looking forward to starting work on the next new material and possibly new characters. Plus, we have some really cool new merchandise in the works. I love working on the development of that stuff. The toy Achmedmobiles should be awesome.” Talking about New Year resolutions, Dunham says, “I don’t think I procrastinate with ‘life’s stuff.’ If there’s something I want to change or work on, I’m already PHOTO: ANDREW SMALTZ doing it. If I’m going Jeff Dunham and one of his characters, Achmed. to screw up, I already have.” Dunham was only an 8-year-old when his interest in ventriloquism surfaced. “It was as simple as seeing a dummy in a toy store in the third grade and asking for it for Christmas. After I got him, I also got record albums and library books which I studied and taught myself ventriloquism. After my first show, I was hooked and there was never a reason to quit,” Dunham says.

His advice for other 8-year-old kids who would like to be ventriloquists: “Do it. Then do as many shows as possible in front of as many varied audiences and circumstances as possible. It’s great fun.” As he tours the country, Dunham donates a dollar from each of his concert tickets to local charities.

Jeff Dunham and one of his characters, Peanut.

Choosing beneficiary charities takes “a bit of research from some folks who work for me who know where to look and what questions to ask,” says Dunham. A Pittsburgh charity has been chosen but the entertainer is mum on its identity. He says that announcing it now “would spoil the surprise phone call we make closer to the date!” Dunham’s charitable efforts go to those in need, both in crises and over the long term. Seventy-one percent of his contributions go to local food banks, 11 percent to The Red Cross, and the rest to miscellaneous charities. Over the previous year Dunham has contributed nearly half a million dollars and he urges those in his audience who are able to do so to help others who are less fortunate.

SPECIAL DELIVERY On Sept. 12, 14 players visited season ticket holders at their homes to hand them their 2011-12 season ticket packages. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy, Jordan Staal, Chris Kunitz, Matt Cooke, Pascal Dupuis, Zbynek Michalek, Paul Martin and James Neal all took part in the fifth annual season ticket delivery. “It is really exciting. I appreciate the fact that the Penguins allow season ticket holders to have this opportunity to meet the players,” Susan Vandewater said, whose family was visited by Staal. “It’s not like meeting them at the rink. They’re coming to our house.” “There’s no better feeling than giving back to the season ticket holders,” Staal said, who signed autographs, ate some table fruits and posed for photos. “They’re big fans and a big part of those sold out crowds. It’s always fun as a player to play in front of that.”

One of the homes Crosby visited belonged to Sewickley’s Dennis Pauley, a season-ticket holder since the 1970-71 season – a 41-year reign. Dennis, who bought his first season ticket package after high school, was delighted to have the Penguins captain in his home.

It’s always cool. Sometimes “ you don’t really know how much

it means to them.

~Jordan Staal

“It’s amazing. When it was him I was like, ‘wow, this actually happens.’ I am flabbergasted,” said Dennis, who initially thought the whole plan was a prank after Penguins officials called to inform him of the delivery. “Every night thousands of people watch our games, but we don’t always get to meet them personally,” Crosby said. “I think to meet them face to face, there are different stories. You sometimes meet season ticket holders (who have had season tickets) for 25, 30 years. It’s fun to meet them and hear their stories. I think getting to know them and meet them is the nicest part.” Sara Harper skipped class at Pitt-Johnstown to receive her tickets. When Russian star Evgeni Malkin knocked on the door, she was thrilled: “My friends are going to hate me.” Sara’s grandmother, Alice Slagle, said her granddaughter “lived and breathed hockey for forever.” Alice added that Sara “got a job at 16 busing tables and saved all her money to buy these tickets.” “It’s always cool. Sometimes you don’t really know how much it means to them,” Staal said. “You get that feeling coming to the door. They’re excited. It makes for a fun day. It’s always a good time.” Kaitlin Zurawsky contributed to this report.

GLOBETROTTERS COME TO TOWN CONTINUING A HOLIDAY TRADITION The holiday season is fast approaching and in Pittsburgh that means that someone special is coming to town spreading goodwill and delighting children and adults alike. Wearing red, white – and blue – it’s the Harlem Globetrotters opening their season at CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 26. A Pittsburgh holiday tradition, the Globetrotters first played the Pittsburgh Rens at the Civic Arena half a century ago in November 1961. Since then, more than 50 Globetrotter games have taken place at the Civic Arena, Mellon Arena and CONSOL Energy Center, and most of those games were played during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. But Globetrotters don’t just come to town during the holidays. Anthony “Buckets” Blakes who is beginning his 10th season with the Globetrotters visited some Pittsburgh area schools this fall, delivering the team’s C.H.E.E.R.™ for Character program. Buckets and his teammates annually participate in hundreds of visits to schools, hospitals and youth organizations. Like all Globetrotters, he goes by his nickname, which he says comes from scoring baskets – or buckets. A 6’2” guard, he wears No. 15. C.H.E.E.R.™, designed by the Globetrotters organization with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Education in 2004, encourages youngsters to build positive character traits. continued on page 37

Try to be the “ best you possibly

can be every day.

~Anthony “Buckets” Blakes Buckets who has been involved with the program since its inception, encourages students to “cheer,” the Globetrotters’ acronym for: • Cooperation • Healthy mind and body • Effort • Enthusiasm • Responsibility He tells the students, “Try to be the best you possibly can be every day.” “I always try to encourage kids to be the best they can be, not someone else. Show the world what you have to offer. We all have something unique to offer,” Buckets says. In one school visit, the third of four in a day, Buckets greeted everyone, meeting their eyes, smiling, shaking hands and sometimes hugging well wishers. He took time to encourage an aspiring student journalist, offering to take any questions, and totally impressed many with his genuine kindness and consideration. It was touching to watch Buckets squat down to be face-to-face with a tiny girl with

a severe medical condition. She was delighted when he spun a basketball on his fingertip while posing for a picture with her. During the assembly, Buckets recruited students from the audience to assist him in the presentation. He commended these volunteers, telling their classmates that they were “cool enough and brave enough” to raise their hands and talk to him in front of their peers and teachers. Everyone was surprised at the end of the program when each volunteer received two complimentary tickets to the Globetrotters Pittsburgh game. What’s in store for those volunteers and everyone else coming to this year’s game? Buckets says, “People can expect to see the greatest athleteentertainers in the world. There will be crowd participation, amazing dunks and the greatest basketball tricks ever.” Buckets says that the Globetrotters stay for a half hour after every game to sign autographs, adding “We are the most accessible pro team in the world.”

A regional favorite, The Four Townsmen Show Band from Western Pennsylvania’s music city, Canonsburg, will provide the local take on Doo Wop, returning for the band’s second appearance in the Holiday Reunion Show X. John Marcischak, bass guitarist and vocalist with the Townsmen, isn’t promising, but says it’s likely that their set list will include the group’s regional hit originals, “It Wasn’t So Long Before (Graduation Is Here)” and “Sometimes (When I’m All Alone).” Recognized in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum in Sharon, PA, the band, now a group of nine musicians including two of ~Kenny Vance the original members, has deep roots in Western Pennsylvania. Their followers planned to charter buses months ago to attend the Holiday Reunion Show X, says Marcischak. Kenny Vance, a perennial favorite in the past eight Doo Wop Holiday Reunion shows is looking forward to performing again in Pittsburgh. “Pittsburgh is the one city that has not abandoned this music (Doo Wop),” says Vance. “Pittsburgh fans are true to it. It remains in their blood. They are the staunchest supporters of our music, and we love them for it.” Vance recalls being captivated by Doo Wop when as kids, he and his friends attended their first rock and roll concert where they heard groups like the Heartbeats, Five Satins, Moonglows and Flamingos. “We had never seen anything like it,” he says. “There was something about five guys singing harmony. It jumped off the stage and into me, and it remains inside me today.” Talking about the Planotones’ popularity, Vance says, “Audiences trust us that we are going to deliver the authentic stuff. We transport people back to a time when they were kids, a happy time.” Vance predicts, “In the years to come, they’ll discover this music (Doo Wop) from the ‘50s has lasted for more than 50 years…It’s the music of America.”

BYLSMA, PENGUINS EMPLOYEES AND LOCAL COMMUNITY TAKE PRIDE IN BUILDING PLAYGROUND When over 200 volunteers – including over 40 Pittsburgh Penguins employees, led by head coach Dan Bylsma – arrived at the 3rd Street Park in McKees Rocks bright and early on the morning of July 20, an empty site sat waiting for them. Six hours, a heavy thunderstorm and many blisters, sunburns and tired bodies later, a brand-new children’s playground occupied the formerly vacant space. “We have great fans. The ‘Burgh is proud of their sports teams,” said Bylsma, who worked at the site from start to finish. “For our team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, to be out and being a part of the community – I know we take a lot of pride in it. Seeing the office staff out of the cubicles, out of the office and out here today sweating and getting something done is pretty fun stuff.”

The cutting of the ribbon, constructed by the children themselves.

The Penguins employees teamed up with volunteers from Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, McKees Rocks Borough, the McKees Rocks Community Development Corporation and organizers from KaBOOM!, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to “saving play” and encouraging kids to play outdoors. “I was really surprised at the local community and the Penguins with the amount of people they both brought,” said Brian K. McGee, regional director of Dr Pepper Snapple Group. “It was a great turnout.” “We really want to get involved with an active lifestyle for the kids. I know that KaBOOM!’s mission is to have a playground within walking distance of every child, so we’re supporting that goal with them.” Although Bylsma returned late Thursday night from the 2011 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp in Etobicoke, Ont., he didn’t use that as an excuse to miss out. “Dan got the e-mail and he insisted on coming, too, which was great,” said Tom McMillan, Penguins vice president of communications. “We didn’t anticipate that at all, but it was good to have the head coach here as a leader.” continued on page 51

And after the playground was finished and the children’s dreams became a reality, the day concluded with a ribbon cutting – done by the kids themselves. “It was amazing,” Bylsma said of how it all came together. “All different piles, and now it’s ready to get played on here behind us.” McGee may have said it best when addressing the hard-working group at the build’s conclusion: “I think we’ve done something here we can be proud of for a long time.”
