Queen of Country, Reba McEntire to Perform One Concert in March By: Pam Thompson

The Queen of Country, Reba McEntire, performs at PPG Paints Arena on her Reba: Live in Concert tour in March. Her date in Pittsburgh is one of 12 U.S. shows announced in November. Born and raised in Oklahoma on the family ranch, McEntire grew up with rodeo and music. She and two of her three siblings formed The Singing McEntires and played local venues and rodeos. Her performance of the National Anthem at the National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City in 1974, attracted the attention of a music publisher and set the star-to-be on the path to her solo career. In April, she released her 33rd studio album, Stronger Than the Truth. It went to No. 4 on the U.S. Country Chart, and No. 22 on the Billboard 200. Five promotional singles preceded the release of the newest album: the title track, “No U in Oklahoma,” “In His Mind,” “Tammy Wynette Kind of Pain,” and “Storm in a Shot Glass.” Continued on page 5

Stronger Than the Truth became McEntire’s 27th Top 10 album on the U.S. Country Chart. Her best-selling album is 1993’s Greatest Hits Volume Two, which is fivetimes platinum in the U.S. and double platinum in Canada. In 2007, Reba: Duets became McEntire’s first No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as well as the Country Albums Chart. Her 11 duet partners on the album are LeAnn Rimes, Ronnie Dunn, Kelly Clarkson, Rascal Flatts, Trisha Yearwood, Carole King, Kenny Chesney, Vince Gill, Faith Hill, Justin Timberlake and Don Henley. McEntire began putting songs on the U.S. Hot Country Songs Chart in 1976 with “I Don’t Want to Be a One Night Stand.” In 1982, “Can’t Even Get the Blues” became McEntire’s first No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs Chart. McEntire has logged 32 No. 1 country singles, the most by any female country artist. “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” her collaboration with Brooks and Dunn, became her 56th Top 10 hit, giving her the record for the most Top 10 hits by a female country artist. A 1986 inductee into the Grand Ole Opry, McEntire became the third female country artist to receive the Kennedy Center Honor in 2018. CMT bestowed its Artist of a Lifetime award on McEntire in 2019. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011, McEntire also was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998, and Nashville’s Music City Walk of Fame in 2006. Nominated for Grammy honors 13 times, she is a three-time winner for: o 1987 Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “Whoever’s in New England” o 1994 Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for “Does He Love You” featuring Linda Davis o 2018 Best Roots Gospel Album for Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope. Cirque du Soleil’s OVO to Present Six Shows By: Pam Thompson

Things get buggy at PPG Paints Arena when Cirque du Soleil’s OVO comes to town to present six shows this winter. In classic Cirque du Soleil style, combining art and athleticism, a cast of performers draw the audience into a colorful and imaginative world of creepy crawlers. OVO’s U.S. tour kicked off in December and continues into May. The production marked its tenth anniversary in 2019. OVO made its debut in April 2009, in Montreal. Cirque du Soleil celebrated its 25th anniversary with the launch of OVO, its 25th production. OVO visited more than 30 cities in six countries as a big top show before transforming to an arena show in 2016. Its 2,000th show took place in February 2015 in Fukuoka, Japan. OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, thrusts audiences into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love. Continued on page 26

| 25 |

Continued from page 25

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the bugs are awestruck and intensely curious about it. It is mutual love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in the bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye. The primary characters are the Ladybug, the Foreigner, and Master Flipo. They are joined by a troupe of ants, spiders, crickets, fleas, butterflies, scarabs, cockroaches, and others, who pull the audience into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life. The Ladybug is big and strong (but doesn’t realize it) and full of life. Unlike all the other insects in the community she is not part of a family. All alone and lonely, she’s secretly waiting for something wonderful to happen in her life – something like love. When the Foreigner arrives carrying a strange egg, she’s excited by the possibility that her life – and everyone else’s – could be about to change. The Foreigner, a live wire fly in constant buzzing motion, seeks attention. Full of bravado and misplaced confidence, he is sometimes crazy. A sexy spider doesn’t stand a chance of winning his heart. When he sees the Ladybug for the first time. He’s instantly smitten. Master Flipo, chief of the insect community, is the oldest, smart, and wise. He also is eccentric and occasionally very silly. His community respects and likes him. Hardworking and playful bright red ants spend their day gathering and playing with their food. Using their feet, they juggle their menu of kiwis and corn, as well as other ants in an astonishing display. Continued on page 29

A spider defies gravity and physics in a succession of seemingly impossible feats of strength and balance as he traverses a wire that seems to give him no support. At one point he hangs at a 45-degree angle over the ground, some 15 feet below. He tops that with an upside-down unicycle act. The wire is in almost constant motion adding to the difficulty of the performance. Another spider performs on a vertical rope, moving through the strands of her web. She is joined by another spider contortionist, who enthralls audiences with her effortless and seemingly impossible postures. A company of crickets run, jump and walk across a vertical wall without artificial support. An air mat and trampolines provide them with the speed, lift and momentum to take flight. Their athletic ability, physical strength and team coordination take care of the rest. A trio of yellow and red fleas combine dance, acrobatics, athleticism and agility. They fling themselves through the air, creating graceful, perfectly balanced sculptural formations. A pair of butterflies performs on aerial straps in an impressive flying act. New Disney On Ice Production Takes Audiences on Road Trip By: Pam Thompson

Disney on Ice: Road Trip Adventures travels to Pittsburgh this winter to take audiences to London, Motunui, the North Mountain, the Pride Lands, Metroville, Agrabah, and more. Billed as the most participatory and innovative ice show ever, Disney On Ice: Road Trip Adventures, takes audiences for a wild ride with Mickey Mouse and his pals to favorite Disney destinations. The show features Toy Story 4, live action Aladdin and The Lion King along with classic tales and hit cinema releases including Mary Poppins Returns, Frozen, Moana and more. Nicole Feld, Executive Vice President and the Producer for Feld Entertainment, says, “This is by far the most participatory Disney On Ice production we have ever created. We’re going to be taking over 50 members of the audience; they’re going to be able to actually be in the show.” “So many of our characters and performers also leave the ice and come into the audience,” she adds, noting that there are lots of opportunities for photos and interaction all through the arena. Tour guides engage and greet the audience, enabling families to become an integral part of the story, no matter where they are sitting. Various participatory elements built into the show include guests in dance moments, karaoke and carnival games that everyone in the arena can play. Families placed at the center of the action on the ice are invited to ride in small groups in a specially designed vehicle driven by Mickey or one of his pals that stops at favorite Disney destinations. Through storytelling and shared live experiences, families and friends journey together alongside their tour guides as their experiences are captured to form a larger-than-life scrapbook of adventures on video screens integrated into the set. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy – and the audience – see the world from the rooftops of London with Mary Poppins. “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” is taken to new heights as lamplighters on flying vertical poles are lifted into the air and performers climb to create intricate shapes with their bodies using nothing but their own strength. The road trip continues to sunny Motunui to help Moana restore the heart of Te Fiti. The action includes a safari through the Pride Lands with Simba, Timon and Pumbaa. Vibrant costumes and wearable art enliven giraffes, flamingos and other animals that roam in The Lion King. Continuing to Agrabah, the audience witnesses the bold colors, opulent costumes, performers’ physical flexibility and athletic choreography of Aladdin’s princely parade. Inspired by the live action movie, Prince Ali’s procession is replete with spectacular stunts, and there are magical moments with Genie, and Jasmine’s skating and aerial performance high over the ice. Guests shrink down to toy size to help Woody and the gang join forces with Bo Peep to find their new pal, Forky. The audience helps The Incredibles save the day as Dash’s speed brings fire to the ice and thrilling aerial bungee enhances Elastigirl’s powers. In a showcase moment, Elsa explores the depths of her power as her palace rises as a kinetic sculpture from the ice with the use of scrims created by flexible LED Continued on page 39

panels. The segment includes aerialists transformed into human snowflakes. In an edition of Road Trip Karaoke, Mickey and his pals introduce the Disney Princesses. Feld notes, “ By the time the finale ends, more audience members than cast will have been on the ice creating family memories that can only happen at Disney On Ice.” Patty Vincent, Creative Director for Disney On Ice, says, “The arena is our canvas, and we use that space to create a 360-degree experience that brings the heart of the show closer to families by stretching the performance area beyond the ice into the air and into the audience.” Fans experience iconic music that has evolved with their family from a new contemporary arrangement of “A Whole New World” to songs brand new to Disney On Ice like «He Lives in You.» The show blends innovative technology with classic theatrical elements to maximize the audience’s live ice show experience. Extending the show beyond the ice, aerial artists and acrobats enhance the storytelling throughout the performance. Her Taking Chances World Tour in 2008 did not stop in Pittsburgh. THE PITTSBURGH

Brand New Trolls Live! Sets Six Steel City Performances By: Pam Thompson

Spring in Pittsburgh will be a little more colorful when Trolls Live!, the brand new touring production based on DreamWorks animated film, comes to PPG Paints Arena in March for six shows over three days. DreamWorks, Universal Pictures and VStar Entertainment Group (VStar), part of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, announced the fresh, new production featuring the characters from DreamWorks Animation’s 2016 film, Trolls, last April. The tour, kicked off in November and visits more than 60 major cities on its first tour. Trolls Live! takes audiences on a hair-raising adventure with Poppy and Branch through an original storyline. The Trolls enlist the help of their friends Biggie and Mr. Dinkles, Satin and Chenille, Cooper, Cloud Guy, Smidge, Guy Diamond and Fuzzbert. The story tells the tale of the Trolls’ beloved tradition of Hug Time unexpectedly being put at risk. The Trolls know that the only way to save Hug Time is by doing what the Trolls do best. Poppy hosts a toe-tapping, “Trollstastic” show. The world of the Trolls comes alive in this totally interactive, story-rich musical celebration of everything the Trolls love – singing, dancing, rainbows, glitter and plenty of hugs. Continued on page 54

| 53 |

Continued from page 53

The extravaganza employs the latest in scenic projection, puppetry, media technology, and it features a host of special effects and interactive surprises. Trolls Live! includes two acts with an intermission. The creators say that while Trolls Live! is geared to children, ages four to 11, the production can be shared and enjoyed by parents, grandparents, and entire families. “We look forward to bringing this beloved franchise to life across the globe,” says Eric Grilly, CEO, VStar Entertainment Group. He adds, “Our venue partners are particularly enthusiastic about Trolls Live! as it delivers fresh new content, incorporates familiar music and immerses families into the lives of their favorite characters. Fans of all ages will delight in the singing, dancing and glitter-filled celebration that only the Trolls can bring.” The creators of Trolls Live! recognize that the performance marks one of a child’s earliest theatrical experiences. To begin a child’s lifelong journey enjoying and learning through live performance, they encourage adults to explain that a live show, unlike television or computerbased entertainment, doesn’t stop if they leave the room. The story takes place in front of them. There is a break in the middle of the show. | 54 |

The colorful cast of characters includes: Poppy, Queen of the Trolls, the ever-positive leader of the Trolls community, who leads with kindness, energy, enthusiasm, and a commitment to helping all those around her. She loves to sing, hug, and scrapbook. She never gives up when someone’s in need. Her endless optimism comes with a bit of stubbornness. This determined Queen is not afraid to stand up for her friends and her beliefs. Branch often wonders if he’s the only sane individual in a town full of exuberantly happy Trolls. A reforming recluse always prepared for danger, Branch is learning to embrace his inner Troll so his true colors can shine. Biggie and Mr. Dinkles are closest friends. Biggie is the most soft-spoken Troll in the village and a loyal and proud friend to Queen Poppy. He’s a hilarious contrast to Mr. Dinkles, a worm with a bit of an attitude. Guy Diamond is ambitious, cheeky, and just a little bit vain. His musical voice and propensity to shower everything and everyone with glitter make him a great addition to any party. Satin and Chenille are the most fashion-forward members of the Trolls village and they help to make it a hip place to live. Cooper is happy-go-lucky with a goofy grin plastered permanently on his face. He produces cupcakes, in a very interesting way and loves crazy parties. Continued on page 56

Smidge is fiercely loyal to Poppy. She’s also one of the strongest Trolls and can pump major iron with her bright blue hair. Fuzzbert, an enigma wrapped in a riddle, is a Troll that’s made entirely of hair – only his two feet are visible beneath a tuft of bright green Troll hair. He communicates with the other Trolls using grunts, which they all seem to understand just fine.

Cloud Guy is a little mysterious and a lot cumulus. Super cool and willing to help out, for a high-five, he enjoys teasing Branch and always looks for new and creative ways to create mischief. Pittsburgh performances are scheduled for March 27, 6:30 p.m., March 28, at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m., and March 29 at 10 a.m., and 2:30 p.m. A Trolls Live! VIP Party is planned. It includes sing-a-longs, an exclusive gift and a Meet & Greet photo opportunity with Poppy and Branch. VIPs also receive premium seating, a souvenir lanyard, and more. A Diamond VIP Package includes upgraded seating to front rows and includes a glitter tote bag. For more information or to sign up for Trolls Hair Mail, visit www. TrollsLIVE.com. | 56 |
