The Profound Power of Prayer: Benefits Beyond Religious Boundaries

When I lived in Edinburgh, it was a common sight to see the words “TRY PRAYING” strapped boldly across church fences, along buses and bus shelters; a simple campaign by trypraying.org. Perhaps the words “Dear God…” or “I pray for…” have lightly passed your lips from time to time? It got me thinking, why do people pray? And does it extend far beyond the confines of religious institutions. Here we explore the benefits of prayer and delve into the transformative impact it can have on people - regardless of their religious beliefs - looking at why people pray and why embracing prayer might be worth a try.

The Universal Appeal of Prayer

27 million adults in the UK pray. 1 in 5 people who say they are not religious, pray. Prayer is a timeless and universal practice that finds expression in various forms across different cultures and belief systems over centuries. It serves as a conduit for individuals to communicate with a higher power, express gratitude, seek guidance, or simply reflect on their thoughts and emotions. The appeal of prayer lies in its ability to offer solace, a sense of connection, and a pathway to inner peace, irrespective of one’s religious beliefs.

Why Do People Pray?

Seeking Guidance & Clarity:

People often turn to prayer when faced with decisions or challenges, seeking guidance and clarity. The act of prayer provides a structured platform to articulate concerns, ask for wisdom, and reflect on potential solutions.

Expressing Gratitude:

Gratitude is a common theme in prayer, with individuals expressing thanks for the positive aspects of their lives. This practice not only

fosters a positive mindset but also encourages individuals to acknowledge and appreciate the abundance around them.

Finding Comfort & Solace:

In times of grief, loss, or emotional turmoil, prayer can be a source of comfort and solace. The act of reaching out through prayer, whether to a higher power or to one’s own inner self, provides a sense of companionship in moments of solitude. Some people feel comfort in the passing of their worries to a higher power, rather than, like in meditation, sit with a quiet mind and observe their thoughts and emotions.

Connecting with Something Greater:

Prayer often serves as a means of connecting with a higher power, the universe, or a collective consciousness. For some, this connection can instil a sense of purpose, belonging, and a recognition of the interconnectedness of all life. But don’t worry if this is not your belief.

Establishing Rituals & Routines:

Prayer can become a daily or periodic ritual, providing individuals with a structured and intentional space for self-reflection. Establishing such routines can contribute to a sense of discipline, mindfulness, and balance in daily life.

The (surprising) Benefits of Prayer

Stress Reduction & Emotional Well-Being:

Prayer has been linked to stress reduction and improved emotional well-being. Engaging in prayer provides a dedicated time for introspection, helping people cope with life’s challenges and find solace in moments of distress. The act of prayer often involves expressing emotions, which can contribute to emotional release and a sense of relief.

Enhanced Mental Focus and Clarity:

Regular prayer has been associated with enhanced mental focus and clarity, much like meditation. Taking a few moments each day to centre one’s thoughts through prayer can help individuals declutter their minds, reduce anxiety, and approach challenges with a more focused and composed mindset.

Building

Resilience:

It can foster a sense of resilience, enabling individuals to navigate adversity with a stronger sense of purpose and hope. The act of turning to prayer during difficult times can instill a belief that challenges are temporary and, for some, that there is a source of strength beyond personal capabilities.

Connection and

Community:

In a religious context, prayer often involves communal gatherings where individuals come together to worship and share their spiritual journey. This sense of community fosters social connections, providing support networks that extend beyond the act of prayer itself. The shared experience of prayer can create bonds and a sense of belonging.

Cultivating Gratitude:

Prayer frequently includes expressions of gratitude, encouraging people to focus on the positive aspects of their lives. Cultivating a mindset of gratitude through prayer has been shown to improve overall well-being, allowing a more optimistic outlook on life.

Mind-Body Connection:

Studies suggest that engaging in prayer and meditation can have positive effects on the mind-body connection. Regular prayer practices have been associated with lower blood pressure, improved immune function, and reduced risk of certain health conditions, indicating the interconnectedness of spiritual and physical well-being.

Do You Need to Be Religious to Feel the Benefits?

The simple answer? No. One of the intriguing aspects of prayer is that its benefits are not exclusive to the religious, you don’t even have to believe in God. While prayer is deeply embedded in the rituals of various faiths, individuals who identify as spiritual or even those without a specific religious affiliation can still experience the positive effects of prayer.

At its core, prayer is a personal and subjective practice that can be tailored to suit individual beliefs, values, and comfort levels. For nonreligious individuals, prayer might manifest as a form of mindfulness, meditation, or reflection. The key lies in creating a space for contemplation, a time to connect with one’s inner self or, perhaps, a higher power, irrespective of the labels attached to those concepts.

The benefits of prayer extend beyond a religious context, encompassing the broader realm of spirituality and human connection. For many, prayer serves as a means of seeking meaning, finding purpose, and embracing a sense of interconnectedness with something greater than themselves.

Why Praying Might Be Worth a Try...

Personal Growth and Reflection:

Incorporating prayer into your routine can foster personal growth and self-reflection. It provides a dedicated time to pause, assess personal values, and set intentions for the future. This mindful practice can contribute to a deeper understanding of yourself and your aspirations.

Stress Management:

The calming and centering effects of prayer make it a valuable tool for stress management. Taking a few moments each day to engage in prayer can be a proactive and holistic approach to dealing with life’s challenges.

Cultivating a Positive Mindset:

Prayer often involves focusing on positive aspects of life, fostering a mindset of gratitude and optimism. Regular engagement in prayer can contribute to the cultivation of a positive outlook, even in the face of adversity.

Connecting with Others:

For those who appreciate communal experiences, joining prayer groups or participating in collective prayer events can foster connections with like-minded individuals. The shared experience of prayer creates a sense of community and mutual support.

Adaptable to Personal Beliefs:

Prayer is a flexible practice that can be adapted to suit personal beliefs, whether religious, spiritual, or secular. It allows individuals to define their own meaning, purpose, and connection with the sacred or transcendent, making it an inclusive and personal journey.

The benefits of prayer are diverse and extend well beyond religious affiliations. Whether seeking stress reduction, emotional well-being, or a sense of connection, anyone from various backgrounds can incorporate prayer into their lives in a way that aligns with their own beliefs and values. It allows you to explore the depths of you inner self, express gratitude, and maybe connect with something greater than the self. Regardless of whether you are religious, the appeal of prayer lies in its potential to bring about positive transformation, offering a pathway to a more centered, purposeful, and connected life. So, whether you are religious, spiritual, or simply curious, exploring the practice of prayer might just be worth a try on your journey toward personal well-being and self-discovery.

John Lamont MP - Conservative

Humza Yousaf has departed as First Minister after a Scottish Conservative vote of no confidence forced him to resign.

The next First Minister must focus on what really matters to Scotland, such as improving public services and growing our economy.

There are huge challenges facing our country in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic and the global cost-of-living crisis. It is essential that every politician from every party puts all their attention on the issues that really matter to people in the Borders and across the country. But I have to say, I am already disappointed by the focus of Mr Yousaf's replacement, the former SNP Government Deputy First Minister, John Swinney. Launching his leadership bid, Mr Swinney revealed his campaign slogan as "uniting for independence". Not uniting for schools. Not uniting for hospitals. Not uniting for our economy. None of those crucial issues.

The message on the lectern, when he spoke, was simply "uniting for independence."

Shakespeare at Traquair The Merchant of Venice

This year we bring you The Merchant of Venice, for us it is set in the 1920’s.

Written when Shakespeare could not have encountered a Jewish person because they had all been expelled and given the current backdrop that is the tragedy of the war in Gaza, I don’t think we can produce the play as it was originally written. However, by removing offensive language we can focus on a narrative that highlights the damage the strong do to the weak.

Shylock is a character who bestrides the public consciousness of this play. He’s not as is commonly misconceived ‘the Merchant’ of the title as his Jewishness prevents him from carrying out such an occupation.

One of the interesting aspects of his character, relates to an important figure in his life who doesn’t appear in the play – his wife Leah. We don’t know what happened to Leah. I imagine a childbirth tragedy leaving Shylock alone with their beautiful daughter Jessica.

The relationship with his wife and daughter explains much of how Shylock behaves.

I think Shylock never has any intention to kill Antonio by taking a pound of flesh, although he does enjoy the teasing as to whether he will lend Antonio the money and I think the pound of flesh is little more than a joke. It reflects on how he views their business, money or respect. When he discovers Jessica has eloped with one of Antonio’s companions and stolen much of his wealth, this betrayal bites hard, but even harder is the gossip that Jessica has sold his wife’s ring for a monkey. I think at that moment the pain is too much for Shylock, in that moment he takes refuge and lashes out at those who have oppressed him.

Yet there is no justice for Shylock. Antonio entered the bond freely, without coercion, he understood what it meant if he forfeited, but in his hubris, he thought it would never happen. Shylock looks to the law to deliver justice, however, a clever lawyer finds a loophole that not only robs Shylock of his justice but in a cruel twist of fate takes all his possessions. Worse still they take his faith from him by forcing him to convert. The Christian characters congratulate themselves for their cleverness and are delighted by this ‘happy’ ending.

Perhaps the greatest example of human scapegoating – The Shoah – took place in an educated, Christian, Western society. When we look around us today at the treatment of many groups on the margins, have we really changed?

In our production of The Merchant of Venice I hope we can recognise the complicated and messy stories that lie beneath the faces of the people we encounter every day.

Director, David Bon.

Promenade performances start on Wednesday 29th May through to Saturday 1st June and Wednesday 5th June through to Saturday 8th June

FITNESS

Hydration and Exercise - Why, What, and When

We’re all aware of the importance of staying hydrated (a 2% fluid loss will have a detrimental effect –for a 70kg adult this equals only about 1.5 litres): what’s less clear is what exactly we should drink and how much. Supermarkets, social media, and the internet in general are full of advice and products ‘guaranteed’ to improve our health or ability to exercise effectively – let’s have a look at the differences: If you’re not doing specific exercise or physical activity, ordinary water works pretty well, but the longer you exercise for the more likely you’ll get benefit from a sports drink – certainly anything in excess of an hour. A sports drink can offer three elements your body might need:

1. Hydration: The government’s Eatwell Guide recommends that people should aim to drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. For adults, this is 1.5-1.8L. Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, all count. In terms of exercise lasting over an hour, drink about 500ml of fluid about two hours before exercise, followed by another 200-250ml 15 minutes before exercising. During exercise, start drinking early and at regular intervals (can be up to 250ml every 15-20 minutes) in order to take in fluids at the rate they’re lost through sweating. Clearly the hotter the conditions, the more fluid you’ll lose. Many sports watches now make recommendations based on activity levels, heat, and look for you to record fluid intake after an activity.

2. Fuel: Carbohydrates in sports drinks provide energy and help delay fatigue. Research points to about 6% carbohydrate (14g of carbohydrate per 250ml water) being optimal. Sodium stimulates fluid absorption, maintains thirst, and water retention. Carbonated drinks should be avoided, along with those containing only fructose – they’ll slow fluid absorption and might cause cramps. Again, there are a wide variety of options.

3. Electrolytes or Minerals: Sodium, potassium, and chloride are lost through sweat, and need to be replaced in order that the body functions correctly. If excessive quantities of sweat are replaced by plain water, the blood sodium concentration falls, which reduces thirst.

To ensure you replace the hydration lost during exercise, weigh yourself before and after. For every half a kilo lost you should be replacing about 500ml liquid. Another method is to check your urine: clear, dilute urine usually indicates correct hydration.

Sports Drinks - There are three main types of sports drink all of which contain differing levels of fluid, carbohydrate and electrolytes.

Type Content

Hypotonic – lower concentration than the blood, tend to be absorbed fastest,

Isotonic – this means that the concentration is about the same as blood

Hypertonic - more concentrated than your blood. Contain lots of carbohydrates to fuel high intensity activities.

Fluids, electrolytes and low levels of carbohydrate

Between 6-8% carbohydrate

High level of carbohydrate

Suitable for

Quickly replaces fluids lost by sweating. Suitable for activities with shorter duration but high intensity. Also good for general hydration.

Quickly replaces fluids and supplies a boost of carbohydrate. Suitable for most exercisers including running and team sports.

Used to supplement carbohydrate intake after exercise. If used during exercise they should be used in conjunction with Isotonic drinks to replace fluids.

Willie’s Wonky Computer Factory

I’m regularly contacted regarding the issue of fairly newish laptops not being able to upgrade to Windows 11. This is usually due to the CPU not supporting TPM (Trusted Platform Module), or it doesn’t support Secure Boot. Whilst there are workarounds for most of these issues, it gets pretty geeky pretty quickly, so probaly best left alone unless you are a brave tinkerer. But, not all is lost, as most don’t appreciate that Win 11 is really just a pretty Win 10, it is not a new system. Initially it was designed as an update, named Sun Valley Update, with a new user interface and a couple of changes here and there. The plan was to make Win 10 look prettier, however not all the changes are for the better and are certainly no reason to abandon a reliable machine to move up to Win 11, when you can still enjoy most of the Win 11 features on Win 10, without the faff.

titles, Win 11’s inherently advanced storage stack may eventually give it an edge, but so will Win 12, so for the time being, gamers on Windows 10 have little to gain by upgrading.

For example - in Windows 11 choosing the default app for a particular file type. To do that, you need to set the default app for every individual image or video type. You can’t simply choose a single app for all kinds of images or videos. Also, some Win 11 systems have a built in ’S-Mode’ designed to increase Windows security by limiting the installation of third-party apps, prohibiting registry changes, and limiting Internet browsing to Microsoft Edge - which will seriously P-Off all the Google Chrome users.

Then there’s all the extra clicks. Like the Start menu doesn’t show your most used and recently installed apps by default, you have to click again to find them. Then selecting the Wi-Fi network or switching from speakers to headphones, take more clicks than a flamenco.

Overall, for a new user, the experience of using Windows 11 seems needlessly difficult to achieve the same result as in Win 10.

At this time there’s also no gaming experience improvement in Win 11 with frame rates in almost all games having virtually no meaningful difference between 10 and 11. Ok, as DirectStorage implementation improves and game developers start adopting it in future

You can’t escape adverts online, either on your phone, laptop or desktop and you will get them with Win 10. However, for reasons known only to Microsoft, they have ramped them up in Win 11, in the form of suggestions and tips. And, in the name of a personalised experience, Windows 11 shows you ads on the lock screen and in the Start menu, settings, and notifications. You thought Facebook was bad! Whilst there’s always the risk of losing security updates and bug fixes on older software as Microsoft tends to prioritise on newer versions over previous ones nearing the end of their lifecycle, they have however committed to support Win 10 until October 2025. That’s about 18 months yet, so no immediate fear of losing protection and updates on your Win 10, and plenty of time to see if Win 11 improves sufficiently to warrant a new machine to upgrade with.

If your computer is running smoothly on Win 10, be happy, Win11 still suffers from compatibility issues and bugs with every update. Micrcrosoft are continuously releasing bug fixes and security patches, so, as Win 11 is not yet the be all, end all, it still makes sense to delay your upgrade to Windows 11 if you can help it.

I had hoped for a fresh start when Mr Yousaf was forced out. But it seems John Swinney only offers more division and more of the same obsession with independence that has defined the SNP's time in office. He sat around the SNP Government cabinet table for 16 years and was one of Nicola Sturgeon's closest allies, so perhaps I shouldn't have expected anything else. But it is still worrying news for Scotland that the new First Minister is making independence his top priority. The Borders needs investment. We can't afford another SNP leader who is distracted from the day job.

There are so many other key concerns across Scotland's public services and our economy that must be addressed urgently. Here in the Borders, we need more resources towards local health services so that community hospitals in Duns, Kelso, Hawick and Peebles remain open into the future. We need more funding provided for local services so that councils can fix the roads and repair the potholes. We need a better economic strategy from the SNP Government that creates high-quality jobs in the Borders and helps small businesses to grow.

Those are the pressing concerns of people in the Borders and across Scotland that Mr Swinney must focus on.

Scotland needs to move forward. We cannot be stuck debating independence any longer.

Christine Grahame MSP - SNP

Spring is sprung the grass is riz I wonder where dem boidies is, the little boids are on the wing, ain't that absoid, the little wings is on the boid (attributed to the late Spike Milligan). Yes I am quite well thank you but simply celebrating birds nesting, dawn chorus, flowers, weeds and of course slugs.

During Covid, gardens both personal and public made a huge difference to our well being so I want to thank Gala In Bloom for the lovely beds in Bank Street, and coming soon the planters and hanging baskets. I have suggested that to help with the cost, businesses and individuals should sponsor. I already sponsor a planter at Gorebridge Station and would be happy to sponsor a planter in Gala.

While I am on about gardening things, what about the council planting up roundabouts. I know my colleague Councillor Fay Sinclair has been pursuing this for months. Other councils do it so what’s the issue?

Finally I couldn’t conclude this gardening spot without mentioning the burgeoning weeds in the “flower bed” outside the Great Tapestry building. If it wasn’t for my bad back I’d have a go myself.

Back to the boidies (birds), cock sparrows are fighting off rivals and the pigeons are eyeing up my Acer Drummondi now fully fledged for possibilities of a nesting site. I’ve never seen a sparrow’s nest as they are deep in my neigbour’s holly tree, though I feed the wee devils (and the pigeons who thieve) but a pigeons nest looks thrown together while under the influence of narcotics. But they had the last laugh as despite its crazy appearance it withstood gale force winds.

You may or may not believe in Aliens, but let's pretend for a minute that they exist, and they have arrived on Earth, and for no reason other than it is the happiest town in Scotland, they have decided to land in Galashiels. They are met at Netherdale by the Braw Lad and Braw Lass and presented with some soor plooms and a Gala Rugby top. They then state they are only here for a day and would like to enjoy the best that the town has to offer. So what do they do? Some witty readers may suggest getting the train to

Edinburgh, but I will have a go at creating a perfect day in Galashiels for an Alien.

The first stop would be a tour of Netherdale, both Gala Rugby and Gala Fairydean club rooms, where the aliens would be shown the rich sporting history of the town. Imagine their fascination as they hear stories of game-winning tries and penalty kicks against the mighty Brazil in the World Cup. Then, I would whisk them off to the old town, where they would marvel at the fantastic architecture of St Paul's Church, a real town asset that many desire. We would then visit Old Gala House and Bank Street Gardens, where we could sit under the cherry blossom trees and engage in a cosmic conversation about the universe and Galashiels' place at the centre of it!

Then, after relaxing in the sunshine, a trip to The Great Tapestry of Scotland to introduce the extraterrestrials to Scotland's history, which comes to life on over 200 metres of tapestry. After fielding questions about our great nation, it would be off to the Pavilion Cinema for a good movie and some popcorn, which I am sure they have never tried. Then afterwards, head out for a nice meal at any of the fantastic restaurants in town. Once our bellies are full, we head onto the MacArts for a gig, and then I advise it's time to return to the spaceship. I am sure that would be the point when they tell me, "We aren't leaving. I think we have just found our new home!"

Now, I invite you to join in the fun. What would your ideal day for an Alien arriving in Gala look like? I will hold an advice surgery on Monday, 3rd June, 5-6 pm at Quins restaurant in Galashiels. Don't hesitate to contact me using the details below if you need assistance.

Currie Road car park among a few of the topics which were highlighted. However, despite the ‘gloom’ – little rays of sunshine pop up – Gala in Bloom, that great group of green-fingered volunteers who plant up and take care of Bank Street Gardens, Old Gala House and various other spots around town, continue to get ad hoc donations from members of the public when they are out and about. These guys work their socks off to make sure the town’s formal gardens pop every summer – the number of volunteer hours involved in planting, weeding, watering is huge so a big thank you to all those involved in doing that. Not everyone is aware that it’s a volunteer group who keep the town blooming so, please, if you can, show your appreciation when you see them in action..!

The multi-tiered Town planters in Channel St and Douglas Bridge will soon be filled and the usual impressive riot of colour will brighten up the town, no doubt. A very welcome sight to look forward to after the miserable weather we’ve had so far this Spring.

The best Pipe Bands from all over Scotland and the north of England will head to Innerleithen on Saturday 1st June to compete in the annual Innerleithen Pipe Band Championships held in Victoria Park, Innerleithen.

Allan Johnston of St Ronan’s Piping Society the local charity which organises the event in association with The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, Lothian and Borders Branch, tells us more; “This year is a very special year in the history of the Society it being the 21st Anniversary of the holding of our contest and it seems that the bands are coming out in force to support us with well over 30 performances on the day from no less than 15 of the best bands in the region”.

Allan continues, “our contest goes from strength to strength and again in our 21st year of holding is well supported by local businesses, individuals, and our loyal patrons. This allows us to support our local Pipe Band with instruments, uniform and equipment and our local Pipe Band Hall which is a valuable community asset. Braw Lad and Braw Lass 2024

Jamie Bell is this year’s Braw Lad and, if the name is familiar to you, then this could be why - his late Grandpa Sandy Heard was an Attendant in 1962, his Granny Anne Bell (nee Young) was an Attendant in 1964 and his Great Aunt Norma was an Attendant in 1957. Moving on to the next generation, Dad Michael was an Attendant in 1991 and 1993, whilst his Uncle Alistair was Braw Lad in 1995. So with all of these family connections it's no wonder that Jamie took up the role as soon as he could. He is the youngest Braw Lad in the Gatherings history and feels so proud to be doing it this year, in his Granny Anne’s 60th anniversary year.

Jamie went to Tweedbank Primary School and completed his studies at Galashiels Academy before going on to join the sales team at EE in Channel Street. His hobbies include rugby, being the current captain of Gala Wanderers playing in the back row at number 8 prior to joining the senior team next season, and cricket as a bowler for Gala Cricket Club.

Jamie is looking forward to his time as Braw Lad and especially to carrying on the traditions of the Gathering. He has already enjoyed meeting the Principals at Selkirk, Melrose and Lauder and is looking forward to making many new friends throughout the Borders this summer.

Rebecca Grieve is this year’s Braw Lass. At just 23, Rebecca has been waiting to be Braw Lass since her days at Caddonfoot Primary School. One of her core memories is when the Principals came in to the classroom the pupils all shared, to announce the holidays were starting!

After attending Galashiels Academy, Rebecca now works at Langlee Primary School. Going back to the school after Declaration Night was a really special and heartwarming experience for her, with the children really pleased and excited to have their very own Braw Lass.

Rebecca hopes that, as Braw Lass, she can help to inspire the next generation to take part in the future and keep the traditions of the Gathering going. During the year, she is looking forward to seeing, at close range, the many ceremonies, both in Galashiels and other towns. Rebecca has been riding since she was just two years old and, whilst she has participated on horseback for many years, being up close and personal will give her a different perspective on the intricacies of the events. Her horse is called Chief and hopefully you will be able to see Rebecca and Chief whilst out watching the events this summer.

Everyone here at Gala Life wishes Jamie and Rebecca the best of luck and hope they have a fantastic time. We can't wait to see them out and about.

Galashiels Inner Wheel Club

2024 sees the Centenary Celebrations of The Inner Wheel which held its first full meeting in Manchester in 1924. Instigated by Mrs Margarette Golding initially as a group for the wives of Rotarians, Inner Wheel now welcomes all women. The aim was to foster friendship and service and to this end we hold monthly meetings and social events. Talks are invited from charitable organisations and interesting groups to encourage support, fundraising and to foster fellowship among members.

We hold a fundraising event to celebrate Inner Wheel Day on 10th January each year and have a birthday celebration meal for the Galashiels Inner Wheel in May each year.

As well as an International Convention for members in Manchester in early May, clubs are celebrating different ways of achieving "100 for 100" fun or fundraising ideas. Galashiels club did two smaller fundraising efforts during our Pop-up shop in November 2023. Members made and sold over 100 bags / bars of tablet as well as 100 celebration cards for birthdays / Christmas.

The Gala Garden June

Some gardeners may have ambivalent feelings about these sweet, furry little creatures; but, in the garden, rabbits create havoc.

New houses often have no fencing at the front allowing bunnies to graze freely. Older properties often have difficulty because not all their boundaries can be completely closed off.

The worst time is in the late spring and early summer. An explosion in the numbers of rabbits coincides with a shortage of grass. There are several methods of control. Spaniels and cats might chase them off; traps and poison might kill the cats and dogs. Individual protection for young plants until they have developed tough stems is a possibility. Rabbit wire along the fence will help but check for gaps.

The only approach left is choosing plants that rabbits will leave alone. Generally, rabbits don't like plants with aromatic foliage like sage: so herbs are a good choice. There are many garden worthy herbs for both shady and sunny borders. Rosemary, oregano, thymes, chives, mint and camomile are herbs which are attractive and should be ignored by rabbits. Alliums like A giganteum, A hollandicum and Nectaroscordum are a good choice because rabbits won’t eat their oniony leaves.

Thorny plants are usually left alone. Spiny roses like R pimpinellifolia and R rugosa would make a good boundary hedge or Ilex aquifolium. Tough or poisonous plants are avoided by rabbits: rhododendrons, aconitum and laburnum are spared. Rabbits ignore plants with woody stems like buddleja, cornus and hypericum, honeysuckle, ivy and some clematis and tough leaved grasses.

There are many perennials that are safe to plant. For spring try hellebores, pulmonarias and Solomon’s Seal. For the shady woodland garden, brunnera, ajuga, epimedium and lily of the valley. For your summer borders, try Dianthus barbatus, hardy geraniums, Iris germanica, paeonies, Monarda didyma and oriental poppies. Later interest includes Aconitum napellus, anemone, helianthus, kniphofia and sedum.

Some perennials may be investigated (that means nibbled) and subsequently ignored: alchemilla, shrubby potentillas, Shasta daisies, Canterbury bells, aquilegia vulgaris and aster novi-belgii are a few.

There are plenty of annuals that rabbits don’t like: snapdragons, pot marigolds or calendula, California poppy, marigolds and opium poppies for example. Certain bulbs will be left in peace, not pieces: hyacinths, tulips, some daffodils, snowdrops, fritillaries, Spanish bluebells, cyclamen, some agapanthus and crocosmia are all survivors.

“Haute cuisine” for rabbits includes most vegetables, except onions, soft fruit, but not gooseberries, and these perennials and annuals: achillea, alyssum, astilbe, begonia, bellis, busy lizzies, chrysanthemum, crocus, dahlia, delphinium, fuchsias but not the hardy ones, gaillardia, godetia, grape hyacinth, lobelia, Paris daisy, nasturtium, ornamental cabbage, pansy, patio roses, petunias, herbaceous potentillas, most primulas, sweet peas, violas and zonal pelargoniums.

Greek Lamb & Macaroni Bake

Ingredients

1 tbsp olive oil

1 large onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves, crushed

500g lean lamb mince

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 beef or lamb stock cube

2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes

1 tbsp dried oregano

400g macaroni

250g tub ricotta

50g parmesan, grated

50ml milk

garlic bread, to serve

Method

Prep 20 mins, Cook 1 hour 15 mins. Serves 6

1. Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and cook for 10 mins until soft. Add the garlic and cook for 1 min more, then tip in the lamb mince, turn up the heat and brown, breaking up the mince with a wooden spoon.

2. Once the lamb is browned, add the cinnamon, crumbled stock cube, tomatoes and oregano. Stir well and simmer for 15 mins covered, then for 15 mins uncovered, until the sauce has thickened and the tomatoes have cooked down.

3. Meanwhile, cook the macaroni following pack instructions. Drain well. Heat oven to 180C fan.

4. Mix together the ricotta, most of the parmesan and the milk with plenty of seasoning, and stir into the macaroni. Tip the mince into a large baking dish, top with the macaroni mixture, and scatter over the remaining parmesan. Bake for 30 mins until golden and bubbling. Serve hot with garlic bread, if you like.

Worshippers have continued to meet each Sunday in Caddonfoot Parish Church at 9.30 a.m. with services led by Locum minister, the Rev June Johnston. On the fifth Sunday of each month, there are joint services with St Mary of Wedale, Stow and Heriot.

Such a service was held in Stow on Easter Sunday, when the Rev Johnston led the congregation.

The Thyne family, of Yair, celebrated a double baptism on April 14 while a date for the Stated Annual Meeting has yet to be decided.

Members share the reading of the Bible and music is played by Andy Bird (organ and keyboard) and Mrs Anne Grieve and Mrs Catriona Bird (both flute).

Traditionally, the bell is rung each week by Bill Wheelans, and after services, refreshments are served.

Kirk Session members of Caddonfoot, Stow and Heriot met in the station house at Stow under Interim Moderator, the Rev Lynn Brady, to discuss the Vision for the Future.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion took place on May 5. Mrs Catriona Bird is to continue as Presbytery elder.

The church is always looking for volunteers to assist with various aspects, such as cleaning, and members can put their names on sheets in the vestry.

Atholl Innes collects used stamps for the Eden Valley Hospice and these are left at the Hospice’s Jigsaw shop in Carlisle. Thanks to all for donating stamps at a time when it seems fewer letters are being posted.

Visitors and church-goers are again reminded to exercise care when walking through the Memorial Garden or through the churchyard.
