We're warmed not only by Christmas dinners, but the joy of relaxing to spend time with those closest to us. Although, while we're having a fantastic time, it is important to remember those less fortunate, people who don't have it so good, and the many emergency workers who will not get much of a chance to take time off. For many people, Christmas can be a lonely and isolated time. Please remember to reach out to your elderly relatives and neighbours. And if you or someone you know is really struggling, then please seek help immediately. It can also be a difficult time of year for vulnerable people and families living in poverty. If you can, please take the chance to give generously to others so they can have a brighter Christmas than they're anticipating. At this time of year, I also want to thank the many NHS staff, police officers, firefighters and other emergency workers who give up their own Christmas breaks to keep us safe and look after others. Their dedication and commitment is remarkable. It's also important to recognise the amazing sacrifices of the brave men and women in our Armed Forces. All year round, they serve our country, putting their own lives second to doing their duty. Continued on page 24

They deserve our utmost gratitude. I also want to thank everyone who will be working hard over the festive period to provide services to the public. We should never overlook all the small businesses and hospitality workers who won't be able to spend much of the holidays with their own families because they are busy making sure the rest of us enjoy our break. Over the festive period, my office will be closed so my team can get a well-deserved break but I can still be contacted by email in an emergency. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year when it comes! Let's all look forward together to a brighter future for the Borders, Scotland and the UK in 2024.

Christine Grahame MSP - SNP I’m trying hard to be optimistic as we approach the festive period, but guilt and conscience keep breaking through. Guilt because I see folk around the world in desperate circumstances: war, drought, floods, starvation, cold, dispossessed. I can shut my curtains and block out the dark and rain outside. I can nestle by the fire with my cat Mr Smokey snoring at my feet. I am warm. I am fed. I am safe. But no amount of switching TV channels can obliterate the sights and sounds of evening news bulletins. Guilt because I am safe, and sound and warm in my home and others are not. I don’t need to travel far from my own doorstep to know that on the streets some are sleeping rough, that in some homes it’s a choice between eating and heating. Living rough is not and never was a “lifestyle choice”. It may be the result of addictions, relationship break-ups, mental health issues. Inflation, fuel costs, have driven too many to the sanctuary and help of foodbanks. Why? In my relatively long lifetime I have watched the rich get richer and the poor poorer. Wealth has not “trickled down” but for a decade a UK tax system has protected the well-off. Ironically it pays to be rich. So for all the tinsel, the fairy lights, the jingles, the enticing ads, I will be having a reflective Christmas. My presents to my grandchildren will be donations to charities with only small gifts for their stockings. My conscience will not be clear. My guilt will not be eradicated but it is at least something I can do and trust my grandchildren will understand. My best wishes. Christine.

Euan Jardine Councillor - Gala & District, Conservative It is early November, as I write this, and it does not feel like Christmas, but this is the final Gala Life that will drop through your letter box before Christmas. That is why I have chosen a festive theme in this month's column. This year, Galashiels is set for festive joy on the 2nd of December, with various things happening in town that day, from the Heartland Christmas Market and Rotary Christmas Market to many exciting activities organised by the community council. It should be a great start to the month and an excellent start on the proper countdown to Christmas. Although, compared to some countries, we need to catch up with our Christmas countdown. In the Philippines, for example, they start their Christmas countdown as soon as the month ends with 'ber, ' so September is the month they begin to celebrate Christmas. One of my other favourite things about Christmas is catching up on movies. A tradition I have had for a long time is to watch 'It's a Wonderful Life' in the last few days before Christmas. The story and message are timeless, and can you name the Scottish Borders town that is twinned with Continued on page 26

Bedford Falls? You can send your answers to me by postcard! Regarding cards, sending Christmas cards is becoming a dying tradition. Most people are posting 'Merry Christmas' on their social media pages. It dampens the festive season slightly when you don't see Christmas cards around. However, there are still so many great things to enjoy, and I hope you have a great Christmas, even if reading this in November seems a bit early to think about it! I will hold an advice surgery on Wednesday, the 6th of December, from 5 to 6 pm at Quins Restaurant in Galashiels. Don't hesitate to contact me at the details below if you need assistance. Fay Sinclair Councillor - Gala & District, SNP Having acted as returning officer for the recent Stow and Fountainhall Community Council election, I was really pleased to chair the first meeting of the new community council and welcome several new members all keen to get involved. Members of Stow Community Trust were also at the meeting, held in the gorgeously refurbished Station House, to outline their exciting plans for the area which had just been shared with more than 70 people at the launch of the Stow and Fountainhall Community Action Plan. Their plans include a community asset transfer of the old, dilapidated toilet block to expand the former Royal Hotel site and discussions are underway regarding the Community Trust taking ownership to develop the site. Suggestions for future use of the site from locals include sheltered housing with gardens, allotments, landscaped village square for markets, heritage centre, courtyard with small orchard, wellbeing space, parking, purpose-built village hall, apartments, piazza style area for eating out with galleries and local shops, commercial hub, repair shop, bunkhouse style hotel with small bar and camping ground to rear, and a day care facility for older people. While this gives the Trust a lot to think about, what is clear is that there’s a real desire for a workable plan to bring the site back to life and provide a valuable community asset and the Community Trust is working hard to deliver. As we look forward towards Christmas (yes, already!) I’ll be out and about with Galashiels Town Band, playing at the Christmas markets and busking in Asda and Tesco on the weekends. If you see - or hear – us do stop for a listen and maybe throw a few coins in our collection buckets so that the band can continue to support local events and ensure young players have the opportunity to learn to play and experience the joy of music. Neil Mackinnon Councillor - Gala & District, SGP Reflecting on my first 18 months as a councillor the one thing that has really made an impression on me is the number of people I have met who volunteer in various organisations around the town, doing valuable work for no financial reward, giving freely of their time to improve our town and the lives of the residents. These include, in no particular order, the Community Council, residents associations, the Foodbank, Gala in Bloom, Community Centres, the Braw Lads committee, the Waterways and Gala

Button Batteries – Are You Aware Of The Dangers? If you have a look around your home you will likely find several items that contain button batteries. They are also known as coin batteries or button cell batteries and are used to power objects such as key fobs, remote controls, calculators, weighing scales, musical greetings cards, flameless candles and many other items. You will probably have spare batteries saved in a drawer somewhere for when they eventually run out. But, do you know about the potential dangers of button batteries – especially to young children? RoSPA and the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) are aware of serious injuries – and even a number of deaths – caused by children accidentally swallowing these batteries. When mixed with saliva, the electrical current from the battery can cause life threatening damage to internal organs. You can watch a video from CAPT here https://s-url.co/4Q8GAA which clearly shows the damage that they can cause.

batteries your child can get to easily. The regulations for the safety of toys state that any toys and games containing button batteries should have them in a secure compartment. However, cheap toys may not comply, while many of the items containing these batteries are not toys but are commonly used around the home, so the legislation does not apply in the same way. If your child does swallow a button battery it may not be obvious at first as they may become very quiet, but if they show signs such as having unexplained breathing difficulties or pointing to their throat or stomach or being sick – especially if there is blood in the sickness – then they should go to A&E immediately. A fuller list of potential symptoms is on the RoSPA website at https://surl.co/4g8GAA along with further information you can share with friends and family. You can also order free printed resources for your playgroup or community centre, including leaflets and a colourful poster. Visit the CAPT website at https://s-url.co/4w8GAA and use code BBFREE for free P&P.

CHRISTMAS READS 2023

Whether you’re cosying up by the fire, snowed in and bored, recouperating from that late night Christmas party, or simply Netflixed out, there’s no better way to escape than a good book. Here’s what’s top of our reading list this winter. Hardback, Softback or Kindle - lose yourself...

THE LAST DEVIL TO DIE - Richard

Osman MURDER MYSTERY! Richard Osman is starting to be a firm favourite in our household, I still chuckle thinking about mature people learning the art of texting! The Last Devil to Die sees our favourite octogenarians back to solve yet another mystery with The Thursday Murder Club and this time they’re set to face their most deadly opponents yet! It’s Christmas in Coopers Chase and a package (not the festive kind) that was smuggled across the English coast on Boxing Day has gone missing and chaos has been unleashed. With a rising body count - including someone close to The Thursday Murder Club - the gang faces an impossible task. The clock is ticking but will time run out for Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron? What I love about these books is their comedy and pathos, it feels like you are in the room with them and you could just join in the conversation. A real art in storytelling and I am impressed by Richard Osman!

THE RUNNING GRAVE - Robert

Galbraith or J.K to her friends!

I love this series and reading the CRIME! books doesn’t spoil the series on TV. So if you like to read and watch then jump right into The Running Grave, Book 7 for Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacot. In this novel Private Detective Cormoran Strike is contacted by a worried father whose son, Will, has gone to join a religious cult in the depths of the Norfolk countryside. The Universal Humanitarian Church is, on the surface, a peaceable organization that campaigns for a better world. Yet Strike discovers that beneath the surface there are deeply sinister undertones, and unexplained deaths. In order to try to rescue Will, Strike’s business partner, Robin Ellacott, decides to infiltrate the cult, and she travels to Norfolk to live incognito among its members. But in doing so, she is unprepared for the dangers that await her there or for the toll it will take on her.

PUB KITCHEN: THE ULTIMATE MODERN BRITISH FOOD GOOD FOOD! BIBLE - Tom Kerridge “British pub food has come so far over the past decade and it’s been really exciting to see. RAMBLING MAN: MY LIFE ON THE ROAD - Billy

UNRULY - David Mitchell

Connolly

BIOGRAPHY! Billy believes that being a Rambling Man is about more than just travelling - it’s a state of mind. In his joyful new book, he shares hilarious new stories from his lifetime on the road. From riding his trike down America’s famous Route 66, building an igloo on an iceberg in the Arctic, playing elephant polo (badly) in Nepal and crashing his motorbike (more than once), to eating witchetty grubs in Australia, being serenaded by a penguin in New Zealand, and swapping secrets in a traditional Sweat Lodge ritual in Canada, Rambling Man is a truly global adventure with the greatest possible travel companion.

ONE MOMENT IN TIME- Shari

Low

FEEL GOOD!

After three decades of marriage, Brenda Jones has decided to leave her husband, just as soon as they both return from a mystery trip with their daughter Zara. But she has no idea that Zara is flying them to Las Vegas to renew their vows. Zara Jones has recreated almost every detail of her parent’s original wedding - now her only challenge is tracking down the two friends who were pictured with her mum and dad back in 1993. Aiden Gregg is dealing with his own relationship woes when he receives an unexpected message from a complete stranger. WIth the help of Facebook, Zara has tracked him down and is asking if his parents are the other couple in the old photo? And if so, could he bring them to Vegas for a surprise reunion? What Zara and Aiden don’t know is that thirty years ago, One Moment In Time changed everything. Will rewinding the clock right the wrongs of the past? Or are they all counting down to a rendezvous with disaster?

I was a bit surprised by this one to HISTORY! be honest and if I hadn’t seen David Mitchell on the One Show I don’t know if I would have been tempted. He came across as really funny and interesting. Quite rightly he points out we all know so little about our history and yet it often highlights the problems of today! Discover who we are and how we got here in David Mitchell’s UNRULY: A History of England’s Kings and Queens - a thoughtful, funny exploration of the founding fathers and mothers of England, and subsequently Britain. Think you know the Kings and Queens of England? Think again. In UNRULY, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky sods who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear to us today in their portraits. Taking us right back to King Arthur (spoiler: he didn’t exist), David tells the founding story of post-Roman England right up to the reign of Elizabeth I (spoiler: she dies). It’s a tale of narcissists, inadequate self-control, excessive beheadings, middle-management insurrection, uncivil wars, and at least one total Cnut, as the English evolved from having their crops nicked by the thug with the largest armed gang to bowing and paying taxes to a divinely anointed King. How this happened, who it happened to and why the hell it matters in twenty-first-century Britain are all questions David answers with brilliance, wit and the full erudition of a man who once studied history - and is damned if he’ll let it off the hook for the mess it’s made of everything. A serious book by a very funny man.

Policies groups, the list is long, and I’m sure I have missed others. Voluntary groups such as these are the lifeblood of our communities, each helping in their own way to make Galashiels a more pleasant place to live in. Meeting these groups and individuals you feel that they contribute a lot but also get a lot back, all the volunteering is done with good humour and a real sense of community spirit. New blood is always welcome in any group and I would urge anyone reading this to become involved in any of our local groups and to contribute what they can. Any amount of time that can be given will be useful and would help spread the workload of those already engaged with these groups.

Galashiels Baptist Church Galashiels Baptist Church is a community of Christians committed to loving God, each other and our local community. A word from our Pastor, Euan… “It’s the thought that counts.” Sounds cliché, right? Maybe even negative! Yet I can’t think of a better, more positive way to describe the first Christmas gift I ever received from my wife Beth. It was early on in our relationship, but the moment I unwrapped it I knew the thought behind this present. The gift itself was fairly ordinary, just a small bottle of aftershave. What made it special was that months ago I had mentioned it in a passing comment and Beth had remembered. In other words, it was a thoughtful present! The first set of “Christmas presents” ever given included the ancient equivalent of a bottle of aftershave. If Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh seem strange gifts to you, imagine giving them to a baby! But these too were thoughtful presents. Each gift said something special about who this child was and what he was going to do for the world: Gold for a king; Frankincense for worship to God; and Myrrh for one who would one day give his life for the sins of the world. Taken together, these gifts point to the most thoughtful gift of all: God the Father’s gift of His Son Jesus Christ. This Christmas, we warmly invite you to celebrate this most excellent gift with us! Sun 17 Dec, 10:30am – All-Age Nativity Service, followed by Bring & Share Lunch and Games Sun 24 Dec 11:15pm – Christmas Eve Service (No Morning Service) Mon 25 Dec 10:30am – Christmas Day Service Until then, you’re welcome to join us for our regular Sunday Service, 10:30am at our building on Victoria Street. Gala Rugby Club Found Our Form Gala seems to have found their form as they have had a good run of successful wins both at home and away in recent games. They grabbed bonus points wins in both their home games against Dundee and Watsonians and even left GHA with a bonus point in their last away fixture. They have some difficult contests coming up with Melrose at home and Ayr away which will both be tough games for the Maroon’s. The seconds have been enjoying a great run of success in the Border Junior league beating Peebles, Selkirk and Melrose in their latest games, meaning they are battling with Hawick Force for the top spot in the table. The under 18s Gala Wanderers have hit a bump in the road in their Scottish cup campaign suffering a loss at home against West of Scotland then travelled to Meggetland, where Boroughmuir showed no mercy with a convincing win over the Wands. The under 16s Gala Red Triangle travelled to Dunfermline in the Scottish shield and fought hard in a tough game to leave with the points defeating them 26-22. They will progress onto the semi-final where they will meet Inverness. Our Vixens under 16 girls section held a very successful tournament at Netherdale which saw over 80 girls from all around Scotland enjoy a number of games with some impressive rugby on display in an ever-growing section of the sport. We celebrated a hugely successful fireworks display at Netherdale on the 4th of November as we partnered with St Peters Parent Council to put on the community display. Due to the huge success of the sold-out event, we are excited by the prospect of making this an annual event. We are excited this year to be hosting a Christmas party night on Saturday the 9th of December. We have our excellent club caterer John Robertson and his team in to serve up a stunning Christmas dinner with all the trimmings (vegan/vegetarian options will be available) plus a choice of two delicious desserts. You will be welcomed into the venue with a glass of fizz and after the meal you can party the night away with our club disco. The price is £35pp and bookings can be made by calling 01896 755145. Gala Rugby’s annual fundraiser Night at the Darts is back this year slightly later in the calendar. This will take place on Friday 29th December at the Volunteer Hall. Tickets are priced at £15 per head and will likely sell out so be quick if you want to enjoy a great night of entertainment and fundraising. In the new year Gala face Hawick for the first time in a competitive game in a number of years. We are doing match day hospitality and you can reserve your space by emailing info@galarfc.com

St Peter’s Scottish Episcopal Church There is something for everyone at our Christmas services at St Peter’s. The children from Messy Church will present their ‘not-quite-traditional’ nativity at the service on Sunday 17th December at 10.30. On Christmas Eve the day begins at 10.30 with a traditional 9 lessons and carols, telling the story of Christmas in word and music, this would be a great service to come to if you need a bit of space to remember why we do Christmas. Our popular Childrens’ Christingle Service is next at 6pm, lots of fun, pyjamas are allowed! At 8.30pm we will have ‘O Holy Night’ a peaceful early Watchnight Service with more carols and communion and then we will be back in church at 10.30 on Christmas Morning to say Happy Christmas and sing yet more carols. All are welcome – old and new friends, young and old. Christmas Services Sunday 17th December - 10.30am- ‘Away in a Manger’ Messy Church Nativity Service. Please leave any bags for the Food Bank in the vestry and save disused stamps for the Eden Valley Hospice at Brampton.

Christmas Toxicities Keeping Your Pet Safe Over The Festive Period

Firstly, we would like to say a big thank you to all our clients, both the 2 and 4-legged varieties, for your loyalty and support over the last year. It is almost Christmas! Which means, it is time to highlight some things pet owners should be aware of and keep away from your furry loved ones over the next couple of months. Batteries And Toys – As we know, there are always new toys and gadgets around the house during this festive period, meaning there is a higher chance of batteries lying loose on the floor or in easy to reach places. If chewed and swallowed they can cause an obstruction, chemical burns and heavy metal poisoning. Even small coin-shaped disc batteries are a threat to dogs as they can damage the oesophagus. We must watch out for the actual toys as well as many of them have small parts which can easily fall off and be ingested by our pets, causing obstructions and illness.

sodium chloride (salt), which can be hazardous to pets. If dogs and cats get it on their paws or fur their inclination will be to lick or chew it off, but this poses a risk. Ingestion of salt by pets can result in a high blood sodium concentration and this can lead to vomiting, lethargy, convulsions and kidney damage. If your pet has been walking on grit, then it is a good idea to wipe their feet and clean any exposed fur (such as on their legs or tummy). Dogs might also consume it by drinking puddles of melted snow.

Gift Wrapping – It can be very cute to see our pets “opening” gifts BUT doing this can end up If you see your pet play with /chew or consume any endangering them. Given the chance, cats and of the above items, please call your nearest vet and kittens will play with ribbons used to wrap presents. they will inform you on next steps. These can be swallowed and become entangled There are, of course, some things that your pets in the cat’s intestines, causing life-threatening can indulge in over the festive period. These things blockages. Playing with tinsel can cause the same can include plain meats (with no bones) i.e. turkey problems in cats, dogs and other animals including meat, lamb meat or salmon fillets (not smoked ferrets! Wrapping paper can soften in their mouths salmon!) and become stuck between teeth, even resulting in From all of us here at Border Vets, we wish you a the jaw itself becoming stuck. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Rock Salt (Grit) - The substance used to de-ice Jessica Snedden RVN roads and pavements commonly called grit contains
