CONSIDERING DENTAL IMPLANTS?

If you have lost teeth, you may now be wondering if dental implants are the right choice for you. Not only do they look and feel like your own natural teeth they are a very good long-term option for you.

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are made of a titanium alloy that are placed into the jaw bone to provide a method for replacing a tooth root. They can be used for replacing a single missing tooth, missing multiple teeth and even support loose dentures.

HOW DO DENTAL IMPLANTS WORK?

Dental Implants are ‘bio compatible’ meaning that your own natural bone grows onto and fuses to the implant surface meaning that the implant is permanently fixed into the jaw bone, this process is called osseointegration.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS?

• They look natural. Dental implants are simply the closest replacement to natural teeth that are available. They can support an artificial tooth or teeth (crown or bridge) that as closely as possible, will resemble and look like a natural tooth.

• They function like normal teeth. As they function and have a similar strength and stability of a normal tooth, that means you are able to eat, chew and enjoy all the foods you would otherwise avoid with removable dentures.

• No damage is done to your other natural teeth. Dental implants do not cause any damage to your natural teeth unlike traditional bridge work which uses the natural tooth cut down to support a missing tooth. This means it can be cleaned and flossed just like your natural tooth.

• Dental implants are cost-effective long-term option. A bridge on average lasts around ten years, but a dental implant currently can last in excess of 20+ years if properly looked after and maintained. It cannot decay or cause pain to surrounding teeth, making it more cost effective in the long run.

• You can confidently smile. The invisibility, fixed nature and reliability of dental implants mean that you will not have embarrassing moments with them falling out or moving like dentures meaning you may no longer feel self-conscious or embarrassed about your smile.

• Dental implants can help maintain you jaw shape. The reduction in jawbone tissue that occurs from losing teeth or from wearing dentures can often result in the alteration of the jaw shape resulting in ageing of the patient’s face. Implants however prevent this bone loss and help retain the natural shape of the jaw.

WILL IT HURT HAVING DENTAL IMPLANTS?

People are often surprised how little discomfort is experienced during dental implant treatment. Patients often report that having the natural tooth removed is more uncomfortable. After the implant is placed into the jaw bone the discomfort is usually managed at home with simple painkillers like the ones you may take for a headache.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENT?

In order for you to be suitable for dental implants and for them to last a long time, you need to have good general and oral health, with adequate bone to support the implant. Some personal situations such a chronic medial conditions and smoking may mean that you are not suitable for implant treatment, however this is very case specific. Implants are most successful in adults where the jaw bones of the skull have stopped growing typically after 25 years of age. You must also be willing to commit to keeping these structures healthy - meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits are critical to the long-term success of dental implants.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR SUITABLE?

You will need to speak with a qualified and experienced Implant surgeon who places and restores dental implants. They will have undergone numerous years of highly specific training in Implant dentistry and will be able to explore with you if you are suitable for dental implant therapy. You will need to arrange an Implant Assessment Consultation. Here a clinical, Xray examination and possibly a Cone beam CT Scan may be taken to access your mouth, teeth and gum health and access the area where the implant may be placed. The Implantologist will be looking to access the bone volume in the proposed implant site and be looking for any proximity to important anatomical structures such as nerves, blood vessels and the air filled cavities of the sinuses. In some cases where there is missing bone or the bone is damaged you may need a bone graft. A bone grafting procedure involves building up of the damaged bone with an artificial Bovine bone derivative. This allows and stimulates your body to grow new bone in the are where it is missing. This is very case specific and some cases do not need any bone grafting. The implant surgeon will then advise you if you are suitable for dental implant therapy, the best treatment options for your specific needs and number of implants.

HOW MUCH DOES TREATMENT COST?

The costs of dental implant treatment can vary greatly depending on the simplicity or complexity of treatment and the number of implants that are needed. Dental implant therapy involves cutting edge technologies, and clinicians have had to undergo extensive, complex and highly skilled training in order to provide you with this form of treatment. Should you be tempted to go abroad to save money, bear in mind

that some other countries do not regulate the industry as closely as we do. This can result in poorer quality products being used resulting in increased failure rates. An average price for a single implant and crown (single tooth) in the United kingdom is approximately £2900 .

WHAT IS THE DENTAL IMPLANT PLACEMENT PROCEDURE?

Here the implant surgeon may remove the damaged tooth before beginning implant treatment and allow a period of healing before placing the implant. If the tooth has been missing for a while, the implant placement may be very straight forward. On the day of surgery you will be given some strong local anaesthetic to numb the area the implant will be placed in. The gum will be cut and folded out of the way, the Implant site is then prepared with a series of drills up to a specific size suitable for your case. The Implant is then placed and screwed into your jaw bone. A healing cap is then placed over the implant and the gum is stitched up. The healing time is usually anywhere from three to six months depending upon the complexity of the case.

After the healing period, the implant is tested to determine whether it was successfully integrated into the jaw bone. Once confirmed, The dentist will take an impression of the implant in the mouth and have a crown custom-made to fit. The implant crown is then secured to the implant a few weeks later.

FITNESS

Sleep – What is it?

Continuing the theme from January’s article on general improvements to wellbeing and fitness, this is the first of two articles on sleep. Initially I’ll have a look at what sleep is, the different types of sleep, and why each is important. Next month I’ll have a look at suggestions for improving the quality of your sleep.

You are likely to spend about 30% of your life asleep (most adults should get at least seven hours of sleep each night). When you’re asleep, the body powers down (a bit like putting it on standby) and systems become less active. This is to enable a number of processes:

• Energy storage and re-supply: When you’re awake, the body uses stored fuel in order to function fully. Using less energy while you’re asleep lets cells resupply and prepare for the next day.

• Recovery and repair: Powering down enables the body to and repair injuries or damage that happened during the day - that’s why being unwell makes you feel tired and in need of rest.

• Brain optimisation: During sleep, the brain organises memories and learned information. It makes accessing and using things you learn easier and more efficient.

Sleep is generally divided into two different types and four different stages. Each involves different and equally important processes designed to maximise your daily health and energy. The two primary types of sleep are rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. Whilst you are asleep, the body cycles through these types of sleep, though there is huge variation in how each person moves between these stages.

Non-REM sleep consists of three distinct sleep stages. Each stage has a specific role, and causes changes in body temperature, brain activity, and movement. Here is a brief explanation of each -

• Stage 1 is really just a transition away from being awake, and normally lasts from 5 to 10 minutes. Firstly, muscles relax, then your breathing, heart rate, and body temperature begin to decrease. This is light sleep, and is the closest to being conscious: for that reason it's relatively easy to be woken during this stage.

• Stage 2 sleep increases relaxation: blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature continue to decrease. Eye movements stop, and you're less likely to be woken up. This stage can last from 10 to 30 minutes.

• Stage 3 is known as deep sleep. It is one of the two stages of deep sleep, and is important in terms of the three processes mentioned earlier. During this stage, it is quite difficult for things to wake you up.

REM Sleep - This the deepest stage of sleep, and the main time when you dream. Your eyes are moving under your eyelids, but most of your muscles are effectively switched off. This is the key time for memory consolidation, emotional processing, and brain development.

It’s well recognised that we need to sleep, and good quality sleep of an appropriate duration has a multitude of benefits. As a result, a good night’s sleep (or a lack of sleep), can impact the body both mentally and physically. Research points to improved mood, maintenance of heart health, effective blood sugar regulation, improved mental function, an effective immune system, control of stress, healthy weight maintenance, and improved physical performance.

Want to know more? Try https:// thesleepcharity.org.uk or www.thensf.org Next month, I’ll look at suggestions to improve the quality of your sleep.

Willie’s Wonky Computer Factory

You will probably have seen, or heard reports lately about the rise in deepfake audio, images and video. AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools are becoming incredibly efficient at producing these; particularly still images.

So, can you spot the fakes? Well, audio is the hardest to detect and will usually require some research to find either its source or a denial from the victim.

Video, unless made in a high end film studio, doesn’t look quite right and if it doesn’t - it probably isn’t. Again, some research may be required.

Still images are the most common and can be really tough. However, there are some clues if you take your time and study them closely. Skin - AI is good at replicating or constructing facial images as there are literally billion of photos available to it online. It does, however, struggle with pores, wrinkles and blemishes on skin, and if the character portrayed has the most perfect, youthful, blemish and pore free facial skin, then either you are looking at a Photoshopped model on a magazine cover, or it’s created by AI.

Body Parts. AI still gets confused by the rules of what goes where and how it relates to the rest of the body. Study the image, are the ears different? Are the earrings different? Are there people in the background with oddly shaped or misplaced limbs? You will be surprised by what you find on a close examination, and amazed at how easily you were fooled on first glance.

Alien Fingers. AI finds hands and fingers particularly difficult and it’s not unusual for the subject to have five fingers all the same length, fingernails at both ends of fingers and on the odd occasion, to have six, or more fingers on each hand! The creators are well aware of this limitation and will often pose the subject to hide their hands.

Clothes. AI knows we wear clothes of different styles, but struggles with the small details, like the placement of pockets, buttons and zips. Also pay attention to the patterns and textures, AI struggles to replicate these across an item

of clothing. It doesn’t take long to spot the mistakes.

Background Objects. AI tools also tend to struggle with complex backgrounds, leaving awkward blurs, warped objects or strange texturing. Even small details can seem “off,” so a close look at the background can definitely tip you off.

Misspelled or Unreadable Text. Whilst AI writing tools are great with text, the image generators fail miserably. Look at any text in the background - signs, posters, car numbers, anything that has text. If there are misspellings, blurry parts or complete nonsense, it is all probably fake. Metadata. The majority of AI creators attach a file to their artwork detailing a lot of information about the image, including its dial source‘Trained Algorithmic Media’ is geekspeak for AI. There are various ways of obtaining the metadata file, but the easiest is letting another AI do it for you. Metadata2Go.com is a free online tool that allows you to access the hidden metadata in your file. Just drag & drop or upload an image, document, video, audio or even e-book file and it will show you all metadata hidden inside!

There are other apps that will help you identify fake pictures or text, just Google ‘AI image detector’ and take your pick. Not as much fun as working it out by yourself though!

You really don’t need to be geeky, or a tech wizard, you just need a keen eye for detail and ok, if really unsure, then revert to some online AI grass that will confirm your suspicions.

John Lamont MP - Conservative

In my book, the Borders is already the best place in the country to live and work. But our communities would still benefit from improvements to our public services and our economy.

That’s why I recently launched my Boost the Borders plan to focus attention on the things that really matter to local people.

My plan is a blueprint to improve key services. It outlines my top priorities for the future of the Borders. It aims to improve digital, physical and social connections.

It is focused on bringing people together around our shared priorities, such as improving local job opportunities, boosting digital services, boosting transport links, and boosting access to local health services.

My plan includes 18 key priorities, proposals and goals to enhance public services and aims to upgrade local infrastructure.

The most pressing issue, I believe, is cutting down NHS waiting times and recruiting more GPs and dentists. Despite the best efforts of dedicated NHS staff, the SNP's handling of our NHS has been poor and left too many people struggling to get quick face-to-face appointments and the treatment they need.

My plan also includes ways to improve connectivity by identifying mobile phone signal black spots and increasing broadband network speeds.

I also outline proposals to improve transport links. We must fix local roads, such as the A68 and A7. The A1 needs to be dualled. The SNP must increase funding for pothole repair. We also need to expand bus services and extend the Borders Railway to Hawick, Newcastleton and Carlisle.

My full plan is available to view online on my website, if you wish to read more about it. These ideas have been developed from listening to the pressing concerns of constituents. I welcome all feedback from local residents on ways we can make the Borders an even better place to live and work. Please get in touch with my office with your views or speak to me directly at one of my regular advice surgeries.

I look forward to progressing these positive proposals with the Scottish Borders Council, the Scottish Government and the UK Government.

As your Member of Parliament, I will always remain laser-focused on your top priorities. I hope my Boost the Borders plan can help improve the place we call home.

INTERIORS COLOURS FOR THE HOME

“Colour! What a beautiful and mysterious language, the language of dreams”

The Christmas tree is out, the days are getting longer, I need to use up all this energy and be ready for the spring. If like me you are feeling the need to refresh the home and are wondering what is on trend this year - then look no further. Here is what the experts say!

PEACH FUZZ EMBRACE THE WARMTH

The Pantone people are big in the world of colour and 2024 is the year of Peach Fuzz. It captures our desire to nurture ourselves and others. Yearning to feel warm and fuzzy in the year ahead? It’s a velvety gentle tone that enriches mind, body and soul. This shade echoes our innate yearning for closeness and it is warm, elegant, tactile and seems both youthful and timeless. It will brighten up your home and make it cosy! Paint your bathroom, bedroom, or living room Peach Fuzz for an instant cosy pick-me-up.

PANTONE 13-1023

THE DARK (AND CHIC) SIDE

On the opposite end of the spectrum, rich and deep colours will play an integral role in balancing the bright and light shades that will be seen in the next year. The shades vary from deep chocolate browns and interesting blacks to deep navy and forest greens. Behr celebrates the timeless allure of black hues with their colour of the year, Cracked Pepper. Whereas, York Wallcoverings chose chic Bay Brown as their go-to shade of 2024 for its warm and inviting qualities.

BLUE NOVA COLOUR DRENCH

BRINGING BACK THE BLUES

Blue is just one of those colours that will never lose popularity due to its innate connection to the natural world. The new popular blues will be more watery and airy, this shift inspired Sherwin-Williams to name Upward, (Upward SW 6239) a light denim blue with grey undertones, as their official colour of the year. It’s a feel-good colour that people can really relate to, and makes your rooms look larger and fresher. For the next year, it’s all about creating tranquil spaces done in this really beautiful, soft, breezy colour. Inspired to create spaces that feel relaxed and welcoming, the new colour aims to promote a peaceful feel in residential projects. Use on all 4 walls of a room for best effect.

Paint experts Benjamin Moore looked to the sky when selecting their colour of the year, Blue Nova, inspired by the night sky, which blurs the line between violet and blue. Supposedly a mystical feeling colour bringing intrigue to your home.

Valspar (paint experts too) recently named Renew Blue, a mid-tone blue-green, their colour of the year, further establishing this shift to more playful shades of blue. This blue aims to be a calming and nourishing shade.

INTRIGUING PURPLES

Purples can feel a little intimidating to work with, but experts urge that the colour is extremely versatile. Sue Wadden ( of Sherwin-Williams ) adds that more muted, softer purple shades will also rise in popularity in the forthcoming year because they’re a nice companion to pinks, blues, and greens, adding depth or vibrance depending on the shade of purple. A strong purple is DAMSON. It was all over social media feeds recently, from kitchen units painted in the dramatic shade to entire living rooms drenched in the deep red hue. These berry shades are a step forward from previous pink tones such as millennial pink. Damson is a mature and timeless choice which creates a sense of luxury and comfort.

UNAPOLOGETIC PINKS AND REDS

2023 saw all things Barbie taking over and her reign over culture will continue to prosper in the upcoming year. Sherwin-Williams, Dunn-Edwards and Pantone all predict vivacious shades of pink will continue to rise in popularity as feel both nostalgic and optimistic. Shades of blush and baby pink will also remain a staple as proven by the British paint & wallpaper company, Little Greene, which announced the soft pink neutral Masquerade as their

colour of the year.

Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams director of colour marketing, notes shades in the red and terracotta families will also see a resurgence in the next year. “Red is really emerging, and we haven’t talked about red probably since the 1990s,” says Wadden. Even Benjamin Moore can’t stay away from the brilliance of red and pink, including earthy Topaz and cheerful Teacup Rose in their Colour Trends 2024 palette.

BEHR CRACKED PEPPER

EARTHY GREENS

Approachable and muted greens aren’t going anywhere in 2024. The nature-inspired hues evoke a calming quality that most people find comforting. This fresh and nurturing sense is what inspired British brand Graham & Brown to name a midtone green, Viridis, their colour of the year. Interior brand Graham & Brown announced its colour of the year for 2024 as Viridis, a soft and earthy shade of green. Designed to create restful and restorative spaces in the home, the new hue takes reference from nature and promotes an organic look.

TRENDS FOR THIS YEAR

Colour drenching has been steadily gaining popularity for a while now, but we expect to see it make its way into the mainstream in 2024. It involves painting walls, ceiling, architraves, doors and even cabinetry all in the shade which creates an enveloping effect. It can feel like a commitment if you’re not very colour confident, but it’s certainly replaced feature walls as a way to make a statement. You could start small with a colour-drenched cloakroom or create a cosy living room coated in a deep, inviting hue. This way you open up the whole room with no edges- good example would be to

So in essence they predict soothing tones of peach and blue, joyful hues of damson and various shades of green- but it’s your home and whatever you like will be perfect for you! Whatever you fancy you can’t be wrong -it’s all about personal taste!

use this in a windowless bathroom. Paint everything including the ceiling in the same shade. They even expect to see “whole effect rooms” where the sofas and walls are the same colour. They say this makes a room seem larger and more effective. A new trend will be painting front doors on the inside a vibrant colour to give the home a splash without doing the whole hallway. WE are also expecting to see the rise in popularity of mid tones for WOOD especially flooring. SO expect to see images of grey floors disappearing to be replaced with OAK style floorboards/ vinyl. Even darker wood furniture will be making a come back soon. Probably not the very old Victorian dark woods - but more a nod to the ERCOL of the 1960’s

Christine Grahame SMP - SNP

I am pleased to report that the Crowdfunder for a headstone memorial to mark the grave of Robert Colthart, Gala weaver who penned AllyBallyBee has reached over the £1500 but you can still donate using this link:

www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/ally-ballys-frae-guid-auld-galae

Why bother you may ask? Well from an ordinary man raising an ordinary family of some eight children, three of whom died at a very young age, not uncommon in late 19th century Scotland has come a lullaby known world-wide. His statue in the Square at Gala is only part of commemorating him and when I discovered he lay in an unmarked family grave in Eastlands cemetery in Gala I simply thought that was wrong.

When he first came from Dumfries to work as a weaver, Gala and indeed the Borders was booming with its wool mills and dye factories. The railway had been built and Gala’s population exploded. It is not recorded why he made the sweeties which were actually boilings but he told the sheriff at Selkirk, when up on a charge of assault, why he dressed so flamboyantly with ribbons from his tray of sweets, that he was his own shop window. What a salesman. Would he have given Richard Branson a run for his money today? Who knows.

Life was short then and he died at forty-seven from what was thought to be a brain tumour. Let’s do him proud, and his family, and get that headstone erected. But I leave you with this corrupted version of his advertising jingle punted by Selkirk shop-keepers sick of him stealing their trade. It went like this:- ‘Colter is a lazy man, He tries to cheat folks when he can, But Selkirk has a very guid plan, No tae buy his candy’.

Euan Jardine Councillor - Gala & District, Conservative

In this column, I have often discussed unsung heroes in communities, the people in our communities who are going the extra mile doing things we are unaware of because they don't publicise or ask for payments. They get on with the task and help others and their community out of a passion for helping and kindness to others. It could be shopping for an elderly neighbour, picking up litter, or coaching a sports team. No matter what it is, they do their part to improve the community. That is why I am calling for a Citizen of the Year to be established in Galashiels. Other towns have one, but Galashiels has never had one, and we need to rectify that.

I will work with the newly elected community council to make this happen so we can honour those who do so much for others!

I will hold an advice surgery on 3rd April from 5-6 pm at Quins restaurant in Galashiels. Don't hesitate to contact me using the details below if you need assistance.

Community Councils play a vital role in local democracy, seeking and representing the views of the community, arranging community events and helping to drive local projects. And it’s not just community councillors who can play a part, the community council can also act as an umbrella organisation in bringing together interested people for specific projects such as the colourful floral displays tended to by Gala in Bloom or the town’s Christmas lights.

Galashiels Community Council’s meetings usually take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 6.30pm in the Focus Centre and members of the public are always welcome to come along to raise any local issues.

Community Councillors also play an important part in the Eildon Area Partnership, with some volunteers having a role in an assessment panel which makes recommendations to councillors on granting awards from SBC’s Neighbourhood Support Scheme. The latest grant to be awarded is to Stow Community Trust for a computer clinic to run in the Station House. The Community Trust has teamed up with Selkirk’s General Store to run the clinic sessions offering free help and advice to residents of Stow and Fountainhall to improve their digital skills and abilities to use their phones, laptops and tablets. This looks like a fantastic project and I wish them every success.

Neil Mackinnon Councillor - Gala & District, SGP

I am very proud to have been chosen to stand for the Scottish Green Party in Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk for the forthcoming Westminster electon.

Having been elected as the first Green councillor in the South of Scotland in 2022

I am keen to see what kind of impact the Greens can make in the region in the Westminster election with me as their candidate.

I am glad to be able to offer people the chance to vote for a Green candidate who will put the climate emergency and social justice at the heart of the debate. It is time for people who care about Green issues to vote with their principles rather than tactically for another party. We can then keep the Climate crisis on the political agenda for the whole electoral cycle, rather than seeing it drop out of sight when a Westminster election comes around.

Support for both the SNP and the Conservatives is dropping across the country and the region and there is no clear winner evident in this constituency, so I would ask those who care about our planet, rather than trying to second guess where your vote should go, use it to vote Green and send a message to Westminster that the climate emergency is very much a live issue for people in the Borders. This is especially important at a time when other parties in the UK are rolling back on their pledges to help address climate breakdown.

You are not alone!

Over 270,000 people in Scotland missed a council tax payment in 2023, analysis from Citizens Advice Scotland suggests. People are prioritising essential costs like heating, food and shelter and in some cases that means skipping or not being able to pay their monthly council tax bill.

We are participating in the “Stressed About Debt” campaign, encouraging people who are worried about money and debt to seek advice from the Citizens Advice network. People can contact us or go to www.cas.org.uk/stressed and find a route to advice that works for them. Continued on page 40

GAOS Musical Theatre

It’s all over for another year! After 6 months of rehearsing, the curtain came down on our 2024 production ‘Me and My Girl’ for the final time on Saturday 9th March. Costumes returned, set, lights and sound dismantled and the Volunteer Hall returned to normal once again. For the Company who have worked so hard to bring another fantastic production to the local stage, it’s time for a well-earned rest until we start all over again in August! It was another very successful week and we really appreciate all the support and good wishes we receive year on year from the local community.

However, we do have some really exciting news before we take a break for the summer! As we say goodbye to Hareford Hall and Lambeth, we have already decided on our next Production!! From a 1930’s musical classic, in complete contrast, we are heading to the land of fairytales as we bring ‘Shrek:The Musical’ to the Volunteer Hall in March 2025 - a musical for all the family, with laughs aplenty and toe-tapping routines, it is sure to be another dynamic fun-filled musical for your entertainment.

Much More on this to come in due course - but for now we are having a well earned rest for the summer. Watch this space come August for more details on Shrek, especially if you would like to join us for a fun filled winter.

The new season for Gala 1st XI gets underway (weather permitting!) with a friendly at home against Watsonians on 13th April, followed a week later, with a trip to Fife to play another friendly against Freuchie. The opening fixture in the ESCA Championship is in Edinburgh against Heriots 2nd XI on Saturday 27th.

The calendar for May sees Championship games at home on Sunday 4th against Dunnikier, then away on 11th against Livingston, followed by two games at home, on 18th against Morton, then on 25th against Edinburgh Accies.

Perhaps the most difficult game of the early season comes along on Sunday 5th May at Meigle Park when Gala play against Kelburne in the Scottish Cup. Kelburne are one of the best teams in Scotland playing in the Western Union and among their players pre-WWII was Willie Nichol; one of the Gala’s famous Nichol brothers.

The 2nd XI, promoted to East Division 5 last season, open their league campaign with a home match against Carlton 4th XI on 27th April but, before then, they hope to have played a couple of warm-up friendlies both away from home against Selkirk on 13th and Melrose on 20th.

May sees the “twos” play one home game on Saturday 11th against Dunfermline 2nd XI and three away against Livingston 2nd XI on Sunday 4th, Watsonians 3rd XI on Saturday 18th and Drummond Continued on page 42

Trinity 4th XI on 25th.

There are encouraging signs in regard to playing numbers this season and fixtures for a Gala 3rd XI have been arranged in May against Musselburgh at home on Sunday 12th and against Langholm, again at home, on Sunday 18th.

Regular bulletins will be issued as the season progresses. Keep your fingers crossed for a good summer!

The Gala Garden April

It’s hard to know where to start if you want to grow some vegetables for the first time: why isn’t there a beginner’s carrot? First, the technicalities: how to make a vegetable bed, how and when to sow, and which vegetables will work?

Lay out a vegetable bed east-west so that the rows go in north-south; that way the sun will strike the rows evenly. If possible, raise the bed to improve drainage and keep anyone from walking on the ground.

Allow about 1 square metre per person in your family. Make the beds about 1 metre wide so you can reach across them easily and allow 2 feet in between so light and air will circulate freely.

Sowing under cover in a glasshouse or polytunnel can start mid-April. Sow salad leaves and lettuces thinly in trays, peas and beans singly in cells and courgettes one to a 3 inch pot. You can also start onion sets in single pots or large cells. Always use clean 3 inch pots or trays and fresh seed compost. Water the filled pots or trays before sowing by putting them into a basin of water to soak up.

Then sow seed thinly and cover with vermiculite, an inert material to prevent fungal disease like damping off. Cover trays with clear lids. Save seed for another batch sown direct next month for succession.

Most seeds will germinate within 2 weeks. Then they need 2 weeks to grow on before potting on into larger cells or 3 inch pots and growing for

another 2 weeks. When potting on always handle seedlings by the seed leaves and don’t touch the stems. So allow about 6 to 8 weeks for the seedlings to be ready to go out at the end of May. Keep seeds evenly moist during the 6 week growing period, watering with a fine rose if necessary. Protect from frost at night with sheets of newspaper over the lids.

Sowing directly into the ground can be done about May 7 to 10 or when night time temperatures are at least 7 degrees C. We can have late frosts to the end of May so have some fleece handy. This is for root vegetables like beets, carrots or spring onions, also quick things like radish and rocket. Make rows the right distance apart (see seed packet for instructions) and sow thinly.

Protect crops from birds: pigeons and sparrows will peck everything, especially lettuce and pea flowers; a frame high enough to let things grow, covered with net will help. If there are rabbits put up some rabbit wire along your fence line: 2 feet up the fence and 1 foot turned in towards the plot will do it.

Choose quick-maturing vegetables because summer night time temperatures are cool in Scotland and we have a short growing season. Look for varieties that are pest and disease resistant. Try companion planting to discourage pests naturally and above all, grow stuff you want to eat!

Ingredients

600g lamb neck fillet or shoulder, cut into large chunks

For the marinade

6 garlic cloves, finely grated thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and finely grated

2 tbsp malt vinegar

½ tsp ground cinnamon

1 tbsp sunflower oil

For the sauce

3 tbsp sunflower oil

2 onions, finely chopped

10 curry leaves

2 dried chillies, or ½ tsp chilli flakes

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp ground coriander

½ tsp ground fenugreek

1 tbsp tomato purée

400g can chopped tomatoes

1 tsp garam masala

Lamb Bhuna Method

1. To make the marinade, combine the ingredients with a large pinch of salt in a large bowl. Toss in the lamb, cover and marinate for 1 hr at room temperature, or chill overnight.

2. For the sauce, heat the oil in a flameproof casserole and fry the onions for 10 mins, stirring until soft and golden. Drizzle in more oil if the pan gets dry. Add the curry leaves and chillies and fry for a few minutes, then add the spices and cook for 5 mins more until the onions start to caramelise.

3. Tip in the lamb along with the marinade and turn the heat to high. Cook, stirring, for 5 mins until the lamb browns. Add the tomato purée and cook for 1 min, then stir in the tomatoes and 100ml water. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat, cover and cook, stirring now and then, for 1 hr 20 mins until the lamb is tender.

4. Uncover and cook for 8-10 mins more until the sauce has reduced and thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in the garam marsala and season. Will keep chilled for up to three days or frozen for two months.

St Peter’s Scottish Episcopal Church

In John’s Gospel Jesus says that he came to this earth so that people might have life, ‘and have it abundantly’. We are a small church of less than perfect people trying to find out what that promise might look like in our day to day lives, in Galashiels, and in our damaged and complicated world.

All are welcome to join us – old and new friends, all ages, and stages of life.

Services

Why not come to our Sunday Service at 10:30am when we sing, hear a short talk, and celebrate Holy Communion.

Looking for a quiet reflective space? Then you would be very welcome at our short Healing Service every second Sunday in the month at 6pm.

For families with primary age children, we have Messy Church every fourth Tuesday in the month from 5:30pm to 7pm during term time. Enjoy food, activities, and fun. Children need to bring a parent or other adult with them.

Galashiels Baptist Church

Galashiels Baptist Church is a community of Christians committed to loving God, each other and our local community.

A word from our Pastor, Euan…

“What was I made for?” As I write this, the Oscars have just come and gone, with this song from the Movie Barbie winning the award for Best Original Song. Like the movie, the song goes deeper than you’d first expect, plunging underneath the surface to wrestle with a question we all face at some point in our lives. We may not be plastic dolls, but that doesn’t mean we don’t ask, “What was I made for?”

As Christians, followers of Jesus ask these kinds of questions also, but with a clear starting point: love. At Easter, we celebrate the love of God, who loved us so much that he sent his one and only Son to die for us to restore us to the love of God. His resurrection promises new life now and forevermore, and that new life is characterised by love. We are Easter people, living in the light of Jesus’ death and resurrection, seeking to share God’s love in word and deed in every aspect of our lives as a response to his infinite love for us.

Gala Life 55

That love is worked out in our lives in an infinite number of small and big ways, which is why no two people are the same. Yet our ultimate purpose is one we all share. What was I made for? To be loved by God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and to respond to his love with my whole life.

Would you like to try church? You’re welcome to join us for our regular Sunday Service, 10:30am at our building on Victoria Street. For the most up to date information visit our website: www.galashielsbaptistchurch.org.uk

Caddonfoot Parish Church

The month of March is always a busy time in Caddonfoot Parish Church and this year has been no exception with celebrations for Easter. Services are led by our Locum, the Rev June Johnston, each Sunday at 9.30 a.m. while on the fifth Sunday of the month, there is a joint service with Stow St Mary of Wedale and Heriot.

Amidst all the Easter services, a Mothers’ Day worship was held on March 10 and a Palm Sunday service on the 24th. A joint Maundy Thursday Communion took place at Stow while a joint service of Communion was held in Caddonfoot on Good Friday.

A date for the Stated Annual Meeting has still to be decided.

Easter Sunday was marked at Stow, being the fifth Sunday of the month.

Members share the reading of the Bible while music is played by Andy Bird (organ and keyboard) and Mrs Anne Grieve and Mrs Catriona Bird (both flute).

In tradition, the bell is rung each week, and after the service, refreshments are served.

A Lent Study group has been meeting weekly in Clovenfords; The Kirk Session met by Zoom in February and an Easter event was scheduled on Holy Saturday.

All congregations met in the station house at Stow on the first Saturday of March under Interim Moderator, the Rev Lynn Brady, to discuss the Vision for the future.

Visitors and church-goers are reminded to exercise care when walking through the Memorial Garden.

Tell us about your event and we will tell everyone else!

Easter Toxicities

With Easter officially starting on Sunday 31st March the traditional treats of hot cross buns and Easter eggs finally make their way into our homes. And as delicious as they are for us, they can pose a problem for our animal companions, namely our cats and dogs (yes, our feline friends are not exempt from eating things they shouldn’t) as these tasty goods are toxic for our pets, with a varying range of symptoms they can cause, and in severe cases, fatality.

The baked buns of the hot cross variety are not the issue for our pets but the fact they contain raisins, sultanas, and the like. There is no known safe amount for raisin ingestion as it varies vastly between individuals - some are very sensitive to even very small amounts. Symptoms that can occur include vomiting and diarrhoea within 6 hours of ingestion, but also inappetence, stomach pain, weakness and increased thirst; in severe cases it can result in kidney failure within 24-48hrs.

Unlike raisin ingestion, chocolate toxicity (from Easter eggs or otherwise) is very much dose dependent. Don’t worry, we don’t expect you to work it out yourself! If you contact your local vet practice in the event of your pet eating some chocolate, they’d be able to determine the severity of the situation and the potential risks. Mild toxicity from chocolate ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, anxiety and restlessness which should be transient and self-limiting. Severe toxicity is more worrisome, resulting in cardiac arrhythmias and seizures.

If you know (or think) your pet has ingested any of these (or other!) toxins then you should contact your local vet for advice and treatment. If caught quickly then this may include inducing vomiting and giving activated charcoal to bind any escaped toxins and prevent further absorption before the toxins can cause a problem. However, if progressed past this stage then your pet may require further, more intensive treatment such as bloods to check the general health of the organs and intravenous fluid therapy for a minimum of 24 hours to attempt to flush out the toxins and support the liver and kidneys. Obviously, the best thing is prevention. It’s recommended to keep these products in a high place and sealed away so our furry friends don’t have access to them. That way we can all enjoy our Easter period stress-free.

HOROSCOPES

For April 2024

April is going to be an exciting and eventful month as the cosmic energies are shifting in dynamic and groundbreaking ways, bringing fresh opportunities and challenges to everyone on this planet. We have a total solar eclipse on the 8th (not visible in the UK) followed by a rare conjunction of two major celestial bodies on the 20th. Jupiter, the planet of expansion, joins forces with Uranus, the planet of disruption and drastic change. They meet in the practical and stable earth sign of Taurus. This cosmic meeting suggests that we can expect anything to do with agriculture/food, stability, finance and the environment to be totally shaken up. The last time these two planets were conjoined in Taurus was in 1941. Unfortunately, this was a time when depression and financial strife caused by the war became evident on an almost world-wide level. On a more positive note, Uranus is the planet of innovation, originality and is also known as the great awakener. Providing that we follow our truth we can expect positive new beginnings, new directions, opportunity for growth and a deeper connection to spiritual wisdom. This month is all about navigating the challenging cosmic current, a mixture of fiery and energetic Aries energy with the intuitive depths of the watery sign of Pisces. Embrace change and trust your inner guidance as you travel through these important times with courage and resilience. The full moon is in the emotional and intense sign of Scorpio on the 23rd.
