• Using a fake account on Facebook. Lots of people do this, being anonymous has its advantages, just don’t get caught out.

• You can’t comment on posts.

• You can’t post on your Facebook Page.

It’s easy done and getting more frequent as Facebook (now called Meta, but no-one remembers that) tightens up on its acceptable

• Spammy behaviour where you send multiple users private Facebook messages over a short period of time. Or…

Jail time varies from 24 hours to 30 days, then eventually the complete ban for persistent offenders. When you are in Facebook Jail

Willie’s Wonky

• Spamming Facebook groups to get new clients.

• Upsetting some sensitive wee soul with a thoughtless comment. (There’s a recorded case of someone being jailed for the one word comment - ‘Idiot!’) So, it’s really quite easy to be thrown in Facebook jail, just from making what you may believe is an innocent post. However, don’t worry. The Facebook community standards team doesn’t immediately apply a permanent Facebook ban. In fact, it takes many, many attempts to get permanently banned. The first time you make a mistake, you’ll likely get a warning, with a note saying that “We understand that mistakes happen”. If you behave yourself at this point, you’ll spend zero time in Facebook jail and no account restrictions will get applied at all. However, if you are a repeat offender you could see yourself facing multiple Facebook account restrictions. And eventually a permanent Facebook ban, in which case you deserve it! This is why it’s a good idea to take the time to understand Facebook rules around community standards and just abide by them. You can read them all at policies/community-standards/https://transparency.fb.com/en-gb/

• You can’t post on your Facebook wall.

Computer Factory

• Posting memes with hate speech based on race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

• Posting about hacks that would let people steal other user’s private information

• You can’t like posts.

Ever been thrown in Facebook Jail?

• Posting any image that includes nudity.

Yes,standards.thereare people who get up every morning with the sole intent of upsetting as many people online as possible, and they deserve to be banged up, or have their accounts taken down. For the vast majority of us, Facebook jail time is usually through a throw-away remark that melts a snowflake. Easy done, so here a few tips to keep you on the straight and narrow: Generally, the following type of post is more or less guaranteed to land you some time in Facebook jail.

• Posting comments about self-harm or encouraging self-harm.

• You can’t post in Facebook groups. There is of course an appeals process, however if you are banned for a short period, the appeal may take longer than the ban. Then there’s the risk that they find your behaviour warrants a longer ban than the initial one... Just serve your time and buy the T-Shirt. Willie

• Trolling - posting hateful content just to get emotional reactions from other Facebook users.

Eating frequently will work, but only if people eat ‘healthy’ foods and keep a close eye on the size of the portions.

1. Exercise makes us eat more: Most of us will feel hungry after a hard exercise session, but this is because we’ve probably used a lot of our carbohydrate stores, which the body seeks to replace as soon as possible. The key here is total calorie intake over the day – just ensure that you don’t overcompensate and put more fuel into the system than you take out.

5. Eggs cause high Cholesterol: Problems with high cholesterol and blocked arteries are more likely to occur as a result of an overall diet high in saturated fats, coupled with excess weight and a lack of exercise. Eggs have been shown to help weight control as they promote a feeling of ‘fullness’, which overall results in lower calorie intake. As stated above, people with specific dietary issues should consult an appropriately qualified health professional who will be able to give individualised advice with Alan Clinch Top 10 Food Myths (Part 1) alan@galalife.co.uk

2. Eating late in the evening causes weight gain: There isn’t actually much evidence which suggests that metabolism (the rate at which we burn fuel and produce energy) is slower in the evening. The thing that actually makes the difference is the total daily calorie intake. As a basic and general rule, the trick is to eat the same amount as you use! Bear in mind though that if you do exercise in the evening, some food intake will be needed to help you recover.

FITNESS

The current cost of living issues mean that we are bombarded with advice on how to eat healthy food and at the same time not break the bank: not always an easy task! It may seem that every time you open a magazine there’s another article about which foods are good for you, bad for you, or all points in between……and it’ll all be different the following week. This month’s article should dispel a few of the more common myths surrounding food. When reading this you need to bear in mind that the statements are quite general, so anyone who has specific dietary issues should consult an appropriately qualified health professional who will be able to give individualised advice. As a starter, the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well is straightforward and helpful.

16 Gala Life

4. Caffeine can help you get through the demands of activity: Caffeine increases our perception of physical and mental energy – it certainly isn’t a substitute for food: missing out on essential nutrients will certainly cause problems in the long run. There are potential side effects from caffeine such as headaches, sleeplessness, and anxiety. High caffeine consumption over a long period will cause raised levels of cortisol (a hormone associated with stress).

3. Several small meals are better than three main meals: Not if you want to lose weight –in one study, overweight volunteers felt more satisfied with their meals when they had three per day rather than six. Another study found that people who ate between meals were nearly 70% more likely to put on weight over time.

18 Gala Life Rolling Hills Folk - Friday September 16th. A friendly welcome awaits singers and musicians and of course an occasional poet or raconteur as we return to real life. Doors open 7.30 for 8 pm start.

The Great Tapestry of Scotland Afternoon Tea - Available on the last Sunday of the month. Treat yourself or someone you care for with The Great Tapestry of Scotland’s Afternoon Tea in Stitchers Café. Enjoy a range of specialty teas, a selection of sandwiches, savoury bites and sweet treats with a Tapestry mocktail. Booking required, please see www.greattapestryofscotland.com or call 01896 809353

John Lamont MP I will soon be returning to Westminster when normal business will resume in the House of Commons after summer recess. People often think that politicians use this time to slink off abroad for weeks on end. But the opposite tends to be true. Indeed, I find recess to be a much busier time here in the Borders as I am able to get out and about in the constituency every day. There are the Common Ridings and Festivals which I am honoured to attend, the agricultural shows, meetings with businesses, charities and local groups. It has been fantastic to see lots of familiar faces over the past month. But by far the biggest feature in the summer is my surgery tour which sees me visit over 80 locations around the Borders. In this area, I was in the Focus Centre in Galashiels, as well as Tweedbank, Darnick, Melrose, Newstead, Gattonside and Clovenfords. It was great to see so many local people come out to see me and the MSP for the region, Craig Hoy. As always, lots of different issues come up like the railway, planning issues, and opposition to a second independence referendum. But undoubtedly and understandably, one of the bigger concerns this year is the rising cost of living. This has been an issue for many months now and things are not getting any easier. With the war in Ukraine pushing energy prices higher and higher, there is a knock-on effect on everything from food on our shelves, fuel at the pump and prices households are paying for gas and electricity. Households connected to the national grid and those who rely on domestic heating oil are feeling this spike in prices alike. There are lots of different avenues of help already available. But I am clear that the new Prime Minister will need to take further action to combat the rising cost of our electricity and gas bills in the coming weeks. They must also get our economy back on track and tackle inflation. I love getting out and about to speak to local people and helping them out. If you missed

One event currently happening outside of town is the Fringe Festival, and I am very keen for Galashiels to be part of the festival over the next few years. The train link to Edinburgh and unique venues makes Galashiels perfectly positioned to create a new arm for the Fringe Festival. If it can succeed in North Berwick, it can undoubtedly succeed in Galashiels. It might also be a perfect platform for some of the talented people in the region to shine!

One of the issues with writing this column a few weeks before it is delivered is that I can never share news as it is usually out of date by the time Gala Life pops through your door. However, I will make an exception and ask if you have seen the Sir Walter Scott mural on Bank Close. It is magnificent and has nothing to do with the council but is the work of Energise Galashiels/Galashiels Heartland of the Borders. It shows what can happen when volunteers are engaged and empowered to deliver in the community. Well done to all involved in making it happen.

Scottish Country Dancing Fancy Giving It A Try?

Dancing is very good for your heart and lungs and will also improve your balance and bone density. Scottish country dancers often have better agility, stronger legs and walk more briskly than other people. Since Covid this is a great way to get out and meet people again.

No. Dancers should wear clothes in which they feel comfortable and can move easily; a wide skirt, leggings, or sports trousers for example. Some people wear a kilt for dancing but it is not essential. Beginners should wear any comfortable shoes with a soft non-slip sole, such as canvas plimsolls, light trainers, jazz or ballet shoes.

Do I Need Special Equipment?

Absolutely not. Scottish country dancing is perfect for individuals, couples or groups of friends and family. Dancers usually have a different partner for each dance. This adds to the social nature of the dancing and means that you get an opportunity to meet and dance with lots of different people.

A Big Congratulations to Greg Lobban and Rory Stewart for their Bronze Medal for Scotland in the Squash doubles at Birmingham 2022, a comprehensive 2-1 victory over Malaysia earned the Bronze. Rory Stewart is Coach at Galashiels Squash Club and the whole Club have been rooting for him.

Rory has had a gruelling schedule and played almost daily for the last 2 weeks; including taking Former World No. 1 and Defending Commonwealth Champion to a deciding game in the Quarter finals. But his medal with Scotland No.1 Greg Lobban makes the hard work all worth while. I struggle after playing squash for two days in a row never mind 14 days in a row, the achievement can’t be bigged up enough – this isn’t like a seasoned athlete winning in track and field with lots of funding and backing, Rory and Greg have got there through sheer determination and effort. Hopefully this will inspire other Juniors in the Borders to take up racket sports. There are a couple of juniors in the Gala Squash Club who get regular coaching from Rory Stewart and they can tell there pals they get coached off a Commonwealth Medallist and maybe encourage other kids to get involved in squash. This year has been Rory’s best year so far with reaching the final in the National Championships, clinching the Peterborough Open title and being unbeaten at the European Team Championships.

It is completely free and open everyone. Meet at the main Gates on Eastlands Road. More details can be found on www.cwgc.org.uk at their Eventbrite page or email public.engagement@cwgc.org

Sunday Worship We meet for worship at 9.30am in Bowden Kirk and at 11.00am in Melrose Church. The Melrose service is livestreamed, and you can join us on our church website or Facebook page or watch the recording thereafter www.bowdenandmelrosechurch.org

There will be an Alpha Launch night with a meal and a speaker on 15 September at 7 pm at ASDA. There is no charge but it would be good to know if you intend to come. The course starts on 22 September with weekly sessions until early December. You can attend on Zoom or in person. To find out more have a look at the Alpha website: www.alpha.org.uk To find out more about the local course email: dmghall41@gmail.com

Soon after we arrived at GBC, we were asked about running the Alpha course. We had done this in several churches in England since the mid-1990s. The first course was in a cafe in Gala. Kenneth ran Youth Alpha on Sunday mornings and a number of other courses took place in our home. The last 2 courses have been on Zoom. What Is Alpha? Alpha is open to anyone who would like to explore the nuts and bolts of the Christian faith. There is no pressure and no prior knowledge is required. No comment is too hostile, and all questions are welcome. There is no cost involved. It is also a good refresher for those who have a faith. In each session, lasting an hour and a half, we look at a different question, watch a video, and have an open discussion. It is run all over the world by all branches of the church.

This month, we’d like to introduce Dorothea Hall: About Me Having started married life in Scotland, Kenneth and I returned to Scotland in 2011 after having moved around England on 7 occasions following our jobs. We have 2 sons and 5 grandchildren. GBC We first started coming to GBC when we moved to Clovenfords and started looking for a church. We saw the sign to the Baptist Church and after the first service we attended, Kenneth said he felt he had come home (he grew up in a Baptist church). So we stayed! My Involvement In GBC

It was Peebles Centenary Sevens which kicked off on Friday night with their Centenary Dinner and the U16 Tournament. The Gala Red Triangle started their campaign on a high with a great display of rugby. They managed to rack up 91 points in their first 2 games and sailed into the final where they met the hosts Peebles, who were keen to do well and defend their home title. Gala started brilliantly with an impressive diving try into the corner. The rest of the match was hard fought but with some great defence and teamwork they ran out worthy winners by 17-12. The teamwork displayed and the hard work the coaches have put in with the GRT paid off and has paved the way for another strong season.

Gala Rugby Club The Season Has Started !!

The senior team followed on Saturday playing Jed and then Selkirk in their pool games. The first game against Jed proved easier than expected and resulted in a comfortable win for the Maroons. This was followed by a much harder game against Kelso when we had to come from behind to win.

The Gala Wanderers took part in the third tournament on Sunday where they also managed to make the semi-final stage but were well beaten by Peebles in that game.

As we write our main focus is on Maroon’d where we are hoping for some continued good weather and a great day out for everyone.

The two wins put us into the semi-final against Selkirk where we had to come back from a 24-12 deficit to equal the score at full time and go to ‘sudden death’ with Andrew Mitchell scoring the winning try. This allowed us to progress to the Final where we met Watsonians but sadly we were unable to continue our winning ways and had to settle for runners-up, losing by 17 -7.

The season started early with the Peebles Sevens taking place on the first weekend in August. Our U16, Gala Red Triangle, U18, Gala Wanderers and Senior teams all competed over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the weekend.

Overall though a very successful outing at the start of the season for all the teams.

If you are thinking about planting new shrubs or re-locating older ones, wait until there has been significant and prolonged rainfall so that you are planting into moist ground. This may be early October to allow enough time to re-wet the soil. While you wait for rain, weed the borders because weeds compete for valuable resources with your shrubs and perennials. Water by hand if necessary and then cover the spaces between plants with mulch. Use garden compost or newspaper covered with grass clippings or composted medium grade bark. Adding as much humus or rotted vegetable matter as possible to clay soil will help retain whatever moisture there is. Do the same thing in the rows between your vegetable crops. Be on the lookout for pests in both the ornamental and productive gardens and harvest vegetables and fruits as they ripen. Pay attention to the ventilation of greenhouses or poly tunnels; night time temperatures will fall away sharply. Water by mid-morning if possible so that plants are dried off when you close up for the night. If you planted new trees and shrubs last year, or earlier in this season, continue to supply water by hand regularly and mulch around the bases to retain moisture. It usually takes at least two whole seasons for a tree to establish.

At this time of year I would usually say what a wonderful month for gardening! Think of all the bulbs you can plant and all the tasks you can do now while the weather is good and the ground is warm. As I write we are gently tipping towards autumn but this is the fifth year of drought conditions in much of Scotland. As a result, river levels are very low and so are ground water levels. The fields and lawns in the south and east of Scotland are all brown and some trees are already showing signs of distress, losing leaves early. To me, the unpredictability of the weather is one of the worst aspects of climate change; seasonal variability sets the clock for farmers and gardeners. So much depends on the amount of light we get and when and how much it rains. This month we will have to pick the day to do the normal things like moving or planting new shrubs. Lawn treatment can wait until the grass greens up a bit but bulbs can still go in at the end of the month, starting with small bulbs and daffodils.

While you are waiting for the rain to green up the lawn again, clean the lawnmower, sharpen the blade and lift it to a height of at least one and a quarter inches. Mow about every ten days until the end of the season, removing the clippings and always starting from a different corner.

Consultations

What to Look For and Action to Take

Harvest mites can be found all over the UK and can pose quite a challenge to your cat or dogs’ skin during late summer/early autumn. If you see your pet consistently scratching or biting at their paws, this could be a sign that your furry friend has picked up Harvest mites. These tiny 6-legged red/orange pests don’t burrow into the skin or suck blood like some other parasites you may come across. Instead, these wee fiends have hooked fangs that they stick into the skin and use to inject powerful digestive enzymes. These enzymes break down the skin cells and once this has happened, the mites have a liquid feast. A single harvest mite can feed in the same site for 2 or 3 days until its full and will have grown 3 or 4 times in size. They will feed for a few days and then fall off if left untreated. When your dog or cat itches, they are reacting to the enzymes in the skin. As Harvest mites are so small, spotting an infestation can be tricky but you should be able to see them with the naked eye. If you see your pet scratching, biting, rubbing or constantly licking at one spot, part the fur and look carefully at the skin. If you spot anything that looks like red dust attached to the hair, they could have a wee infestation. The most common places for this to occur are in between the toes, on paws, legs, armpits, and tummy. Dogs and cats can start scratching 3 – 6 hours after being exposed to the mites. If constant scratching, this can lead to hair loss and infection, so treating as early as possible is preferable. As the itching can last up to several months, the sooner you begin treatment, the Thebetter.mites are usually only active during the day and most of the worst infestations happen when you sit in one spot in the sun so try and keep on the move, but also walking your dog early morning or later evening, avoiding long grasses as you go can be beneficial.

Sadly, there is no specific treatment for harvest mites. However, some treatments are more effective than others. If your pet displays any signs of itchiness, don’t leave it too long before giving us a call. They will be pretty uncomfortable and the wee blighters will be driving them crazy.

Just 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week helps lower your blood pressure and boost heart health, exercising more than this will even further lower your blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure?

54 Gala Life Hypertension - or high blood pressure is common in the UK, with around one third of adults suffering from it, sometimes without even knowing. There are no symptoms, yet it can seriously increase your chance of having a heart attack, or a stroke. Blood pressure is measured in two numbers and measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). The systolic pressure is the higher number, and refers to the pressure inside your arteries when your heart is pumping. Diastolic pressure is the pressure inside your arteries when your heart is resting between Normalbeats. blood pressure can vary from 90/60 to 120/80. If higher than140/90 for more than a few weeks, your doctor will probably diagnose you with high blood pressure and may recommend that you take medication. The easiest way to measure your blood pressure is to book an appointment at a local pharmacy, or you could buy a monitor for home use. As well as taking medication, there are lots of things you can do to help lower blood pressure naturally – and will likely boost your overall health and fitness too.

Cut Back on Salt Reducing your sodium intake is one of the most important ways to lower your blood pressure. Many studies show there’s a link between high sodium intake and high blood pressure, as well as heart conditions like stroke, so if you already have high blood pressure, try cutting back on salt and seeing if that makes any difference. Check the labels on your food and rather than buying readymade meals which are often high in sodium, try making fresh food yourself. You can season dishes with herbs and spices instead of salt. Eat a Whole Food Diet

Eating a fresh and healthy diet that’s low in saturated fat and cholesterol is also a good way to lower your blood pressure. According to the NHS, a low-fat diet that’s high in fibre, like wholegrain rice, bread and pasta, and plenty of fruit and vegetables will also help to lower blood pressure.

Lose Weight Blood pressure tends to increase as weight increases. If you are overweight, losing even a small amount can make a difference. It is estimated that for each kilogram you lose, you could reduce your blood pressure by about one millimetre of mercury. It’s also worth watching your waistline. The fat there is called visceral fat, and having too much of it can increase the risk of high blood pressure. Generally speaking, men should aim to keep their waist at less than 40 inches, women should aim for less than 35 inches.

You don’t have to run marathons or kill yourself in the gym as moderate aerobic exercise like brisk walking, cycling, swimming or dancing can all help. Moderate aerobic exercise on average lowered their blood pressure by 3.9% systolic and 4.5% diastolic – just as good as blood pressure medications.

Here are a few tips to help keep it down

Exercise When you exercise, your heart becomes stronger and better at pumping blood. This helps lower the pressure in your arteries.

Gala Life 55

Potassium can reduce the harmful effects of sodium in your body, it also eases pressure in your blood vessels. The best source of potassium is through food rather than supplements, (consuming around 3,000 to 3,500 mg of potassium each day is recommended). However, if you suffer from kidney problems it’s important to speak to your GP about your optimum potassium level. Fruits like bananas, apricots, avocados, tomatoes, melons, and oranges are all high in potassium, as are vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, peas, leafy greens, and spinach.

Studies have shown that regularly sleeping for less than five hours a night is a significant risk of high blood pressure in the long term. Six to eight hours of restful sleep a night can not only prevent high blood pressure but can also prevent fluctuating blood pressure, which can be just as dangerous. If you struggle to get a good nights sleep, seek help or do some research, there are lots of good tips available.

Reduce Stress When you’re stressed, your heart rate is higher and your blood vessels can become constricted. Plus, when stressed you are more likely to reintroduce those bad habits, like drinking more alcohol, smoking, or eating unhealthy food.

Get More Sleep

Whilst various studies now suggest a daily intake of coffee can be good for you, there are people more sensitive to caffeine than others. If you do suffer high blood pressure, try cutting back to see if it makes any difference.

Read those labels! Eat More Potassium

If you have concerns about your blood pressure, you should always speak to your doctor, as it might be that controlling it with medication is the best step. Willie

You should also cut down on – or cut out altogether – processed foods that are high not only in salt, but in sugar and refined carbs too. Processed foods high in salt or refined carbs include deli meats, tinned soup, pizza, crisps, and other processed snacks. Be wary of foods that are branded as “lowfat” they are also often high in both sugar and salt.

It’s difficult to eliminate stress from your life. However, if you can identify the main cause of your stress, you can think about ways you can reduce these triggers, or deal with them better.

Listening to soothing music, going for a walk, gentle exercise and even eating dark chocolate or drinking peppermint tea have been shown to relax your nervous system, so try find what works best for you. As you age, it is definitely worth keeping tabs on your blood pressure with regular readings. Keep in mind though that the readings can be affected by several things like smoking, caffeine, a full bladder, recent physical activity and your emotional state at the time of the test. Since so many factors can affect blood pressure readings, you should have your blood pressure taken several times to get an accurate measurement.

Stop Smoking Apart from all the other harm smoking does, the chemicals in tobacco are also known to harm your blood vessel walls, causing inflammation, and narrowing your arteries, which leads to higher blood pressure. It’s time to quit. Cut Back on Caffeine
