Happy

New Year from the Kid’s Committee! We are looking forward to a great year with a lot of new PLA members and a seeming surge in the number of kids we are seeing at every event and especially at the beach in the summer. Our purpose is to put on great and fun events throughout the year for the kids of the PLA community. A couple of our main activities this year are the Spring Eggstravaganza, the Ice Cream Social in the Summer, and our premier event, the Holiday Believers Party in December. These events are only as good as we all make them, so if you are interested in having fun activities with lots of happy kids and if you want to help make our PLA community even stronger, then we would love to have your help. We would like to encourage anyone interested in helping out with existing or new events, to please contact one of the Chairs, Rachel Leiphart or Rachel Speights. With new committee members, we could explore some activity ideas like a Kids’ Summer Play, Movie Night, Camping at the Beach and more. We’re excited for a fun 2014 and hope you can join us in planning, hosting, or just attending the events this year. Rachel Leiphart 203-383-2756 Rachel Speights 203-873-6001 Kids Committee Chairs

From the President’s desk

The lake is frozen, its the middle of January and who is thinking about the summer? It will be upon us sooner than we think. With that in mind we are already deep into planning the operations and activities that make summers at Pinewood Lake so wonderful. So a big early thank you to all the volunteers who make this place so special. This month I will be asking the board members to state what they want to achieve this year. We will pick a few to focus on - stay tuned for details. To give everyone a preview - my first goal is to just have a smooth year - I think we all want to just have a fun and satisfying year. I am also going to focus on a lot of operational issues. Over the last several years we have had a significant but healthy change in board members and changes in major committees. While the turnover is natural - we have lost decades of institutional knowledge. Although we have good records - finding something can be quite difficult. One of my goals is to get all of this written down. We will initially publish these on our website - and eventually in the directory. It is not my goal to create a bunch of new rules and regulations - instead to just get the ones we know updated and written down somewhere we all can find them. We also have some big items we need to get started on. The biggest of these is that we need to seriously start the planning for a dredging that will likely take place in 2015 or 2016. The process for this is complicated with approvals, engineering studies and contractors to coordinate. The lake preservation committee - headed by Dan Letizia will be driving this. We are always looking for people willing to help. We will be enlisting some lake veterans for advice - but welcome anyone willing to lend a hand. Finally, for this month - with the goal of helping everyone know what goes on here at PLA - I’m asking all the major committees to write articles about what they do for the Partlyline. These will be in addition to the normal event promotions and recaps. These will be published throughout the year. Hopefully this will help everyone learn about the happenings here at the lake - but also spur interest in volunteering and generating new ideas. As always - feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns or ideas. I can be reached at plapresident@gmail.com and (203) 380-0504. are welcomed and anything goes (within reason of course)…maybe a poem reading, acapella song, play your instrument or perform an original song. Invite your friends to participate; the more the merrier, I always say. Also looking for a charismatic Master of Ceremonies for the night. Ideally this person would be introducing the acts and entertaining the audience between performances and set ups; someone with 10% salt and 90% ham! This is a free event, so BYOB (no glass please) and snacks. I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday, July 26th on the Patio. If it rains we will move the event into the Pineroom. Thank you for your continued support.

New Year’s Eve 2013

The Pinewood Lake 2nd Annual New Year’s Eve Party was held in the Pineroom. Guests shared appetizers, drinks, dessert, coffee, and a Champaign toast at mid-night. Our DJ, CJ Entertainment played a mix of music, and stayed longer than expected at the request of the guests. As midnight approached, we watched the ball drop in Times Square on a large screen. We would like to thank John Girard for arranging the equipment that projected the live festivities in NYC.

We raffled off 11 prizes. Happy New Year to all and thanks to everyone who attended – you made this party a great success! Can’t wait to do it again next year. Jenn Izzo and Dawn Rice Event Organizers

Lake Social Committee

I recently was organizing some old Partylines that Helen Carlson gave me to file. As I was putting them in chronological order, I happened to glance at some Event Calendars from 1977 and 1978. Our previous members were hosting events like … April Fools Dances, German Beer Fests, President’s Balls, St. Patty’s Fling, Casino Nights and Country Western Dances as well as numerous Teen events to add to the mix. Being a member of Pinewood Lake Association comes with privileges; one of which is the seasonal events we offer to our members. These events are organized by PLA volunteers and we are extremely grateful to our current event hosts as well as past hosts for running these events. I have been a member of Pinewood Lake for 19 years and have been running events for close to 10 years with my co-chair, Michele Kingsbury. There comes a time when we have to start passing the baton to new members and current members alike to keep the momentum of these events moving forward.

We currently have ongoing activities that take place on a monthly basis in the Pineroom; like Monday night Yoga, Wednesday night Poker and from time to time, a gathering of our Ladies of the Lake. As you glance at our current event calendar in this months’ Partyline, you will notice our events have dwindled a bit. Getting involved with running or helping events is a great way to be social and meet fellow PLA members which is what makes Pinewood Lake a special community. We currently need hosts for …Super Bowl Party, Beach Blanket Bingo, Ice Cream Social, Family Fun Day Bake Sale & Badminton Tournament Breakfast. Or if you’d rather create a new event or have an idea for something new like a lecture, recital, luau, meeting, cabaret, themed dance or play reading please let the Social Committee know & we will add it to the PLA calendar.

We strive to have great attendance and build our community atmosphere with these gatherings. Essentially, the party/event should pay for itself so we can keep costs down. (cont’d. page 7)

Social Committee (cont’d. from page 6) We hope that events/parties break even or even make a profit. Some events have been known to fund new umbrellas and Adirondack chairs for our beach, buy a popcorn machine and even pay for our end of year Member’s Party. Let’s keep up the tradition of having fun, community building events at Pinewood Lake in 2014! • If you are interested in hosting or helping with an event contact Nicky Migacz janb68@charter.net • If you are interested in helping with Kids events contact Rachel Speights rachel.speights@gmail.com or Rachel Leiphart roxy729@gmail.com • If you are interested in starting a Teen Committee contact Michele Kingsbury chefmichelek@gmail.com Nicky Migacz Social Committee Chair
