The Roebourne community celebrated the official opening of the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation’s new outdoor amphitheatre on Saturday April 27. The Roebourne Amphitheatre offers a unique experience of a night out under the stars. The venue marks the initial phase of the larger Aboriginal cultural precinct that will be established over the next eighteen months. The 2013 program for the venue will combine locally developed content with high quality visiting theatre and live performances. The Roebourne Amphitheatre will be recognised across WA as a state of the art facility serving the local community and presenting high quality content which inspires, educates and involves Roebourne residents and the broader local

community, as it will also serve as a meeting space and will be accessible for all. The Roebourne Amphitheatre has been planned by the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation to not only offer great entertainment for the people of Roebourne, but also become an Aboriginal educational hub for the region. The venue offers a space for culture to be shared between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. The Dust Echoes collection of Aboriginal short films from the Central Desert communities of Australia opened the night followed by local Ngarluma Man and Weerianna Street Media director and film maker Tyson Mowarin’s film Mabuji. The Launch Party also saw some great live talent take to the stage, including members from The Descendance Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander Dance Theatre and Aboriginal Hip Hop artists The Yung Warriors. The soulful tunes of local singers Dudley and Cho wowed the crowd and later invited Aboriginal elders Allery Sandy and Violet Samson to the stage to perform a song in the Yindjibarndi language. Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation director Vincent Adams and employee Georgia Mills were MCs for the night. “The night has become a defining point for future events held at the Amphitheatre as it brought community members together and exemplified the positive aspects of living in Roebourne,” Vincent said. “We can’t wait for the cultural precinct to be built next door to accompany events at the Amphitheatre.”

remote Australia and even into its gaols, like Roebourne Prison. But for Perth-born musician David Hyams, it is life on the road that has been a constant source

Among his most recent journeys have been regular trips into Roebourne Prison to help inmates write and record their own songs.

“They get a sense of achievement to have been a part of an album that is out there in the commercial marketplace,” David said.

Working with community organisation Big hART, David is visiting the prison again on May 22 in what should be one of the final recording sessions ahead of a CD release of the inmates songs later this year.

“Music is also something that everyone can connect to – a song seems to convey more feelings than when you sit down and talk about something like prison.”

that helped him form Celtic influenced Miles to Go Band in 1999 and, more recently, visits to remote Western Australia and Roebourne Prison that inspired his new singer songwriter album “Travelling Bones”. “There is something about being in motion that keeps me writing, new places and new experiences and the continual discovery of the vastness of Western Australia’s north,” David said.

A song seems to convey more feelings than when you sit down and talk about something like prison.” With some of the Roebourne inmates being handy guitar players already and some just starting up, David said the project gives them a focus and helps build confidence.

5

The work can have its sadder moments, however, like the realisation that Roebourne Prison plays, perhaps, too prominent a role in the community. David said he came across inmates in the prison, who he had met earlier through his music workshops in remote communities 600 miles away in the Western Desert. Often in those earlier meetings, the young men wrote songs about friends or relatives in Roebourne Prison, and then a few months later they were serving their own sentences. But then there are the lighter moments as well, such as when inmates in another WA prison told him they were rappers, forcing David to put aside the lesson plan and dig out some phat beats from his computer.

“Suddenly I was producer,” David said.

rap

“You learn fast when you are in a situation like that.” Such situations also make for great song material with tracks “Another Day” and “One Day Gone” from his new album based on the experiences of inmates. In fact, his new album might not have come into existence at all without the workshops.

David said it was the experience of helping to teach others how to write songs that enabled him to rediscover his own ability to write the lyrics on “Travelling Bones”. Anybody interested in buying a copy of “Travelling Bones” or booking David for a gig can contact Dixie Battersby on 0413 382 201.

With the Shire of Roebourne’s two street sweeping vehicles experiencing 45 to 50 per cent down time due to maintenance issues this financial year, Council has voted to explore the possibility of privatising the service.

Shire staff are now preparing a tender process to invite bidders to take over the street sweeping service.

A report by consultants Specialized Sweeping Services found that a contractor would likely be able to provide adequate street sweeping services in Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne and Wickham for $300,000 per annum – or half the price of an equivalent service by the Shire. “Cost estimates for Council to deliver the same level of service are in the vicinity of $601,000 based on 2012/13 figures,” the Shire’s April council meeting report said. “However due to constant machinery breakdown and issues mentioned previously the desired level of service is

Elsewhere in the Shire, excavation works are set to commence at the Karratha Aquatic Centre to prepare for the removal of 17 palm trees that will be relocated to the new aquatic precinct at the Karratha Leisureplex. Roebourne Shire Council President Fiona WhiteHartig said the palms had historic value. “The palms have featured at the Aquatic Centre for more than 30 years, and with their new home they will have another 30 years or more to flourish,” Councillor White-Hartig said. “The Leisureplex will be filled with new, state-ofthe-art facilities, so it will be nice to have a piece of the original aquatic centre featuring as part of the landscape, and as a reminder of where we’ve come from.”

He is also fondly remembered in the Pilbara for his friendship and many years treating and healing the region’s sick and injured animals. Richard was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, in the UK before his family emigrated with a then three-year old Richard to Australia in 1972. With his father finding work as a fitter at Hamersley Iron in 1972, Richard grew up in Karratha where he fell in love with animals as a teenager after taking work as a kennel hand at the Karratha Veterinary Hospital. He then moved to Perth, graduating as a vet with honours in 1990, and working in the UK and throughout the North West before returning to the Karratha Veterinary Hospital in 1998 where he eventually became a minor partner. Richard loved working in the Pilbara where he treated large and small animals and, due to the distance to specialist

services, often undertook emergency procedures.

He also conducted regular outreach clinics in Pannawonica and Onslow, forming close friendships with the people in these communities.

In 2010, Richard and his partner Debra Carrier moved to Roleystone in Perth to pursue a dream of owning their own vet clinic. Despite leaving the region, Richard maintained his link to the Pilbara, often using the telephone to train and instruct station owners and other remote residents in how to treat their animals. Music was another great passion of Richard’s. However, his love of playing all genres and styles through the stereo occasionally forced his children to beg him to change the song.

Turei’s family are hard-working potato farm workers in rural New Zealand. A talented musician, Turei dreams of his band being the support act for Bob Marley’s 1979 tour. Diamond Dove

The Diamond Dove (Geopelia cuneata) is a bird resident in Australia.

They feed off seed mostly from grasses. They will also eat ants.

The dove predominantly exists in areas, which, despite being near water, are still semiarid in nature, such as in Central, West and Northern Australia.

The doves tend to breed after rain but mostly in spring in Southern Australia. Nests are usually built from interwoven grasses and/or twigs and are fragile.

They are one of Australia’s smallest doves along with the Peaceful Dove.

Two white eggs are usually laid and incubated for 13 to 14 days with the chick being usually fully feathered and flying by two weeks.

They have been spotted occasionally in Southern Australia in parks and gardens when the center of Australia is very dry. They are small pigeons with a length of 19 to 21 centimeters or 9 to 11 inches. Regardless of the gender, they have white spots and black edges on their wings, orange eyes and red eye-rings. The genders look similar except the female’s eye ring is less vivid and has more of a brown colour to the plumage.

They are known to have a variety of calls.

The proposed rate increase will see households pay 12 per cent more

A new legislation requiring all WA Local Governments to change the way they account for their assets is one of the factors behind the Town of Port Hedland’s proposed rates increase for the 2013/14 financial year. The Town of Port Hedland said other factors behind a proposed rate increase include Council’s commitment to closing the asset management gap, the increasing costs of doing business in the Pilbara and a reduction in revenue from the State Government Grants Commission for local roads. The Town of Port Hedland Council has agreed to advertise the proposed increase in the rate in the dollar for public comment and feedback for a period of 21 working days. The proposed rate in the dollar will see households experiencing a 12 per cent increase, and mass accommodation properties to receive an approximate 33 per cent increase. Mayor Kelly Howlett said that in the past 12 months, there had been a three per cent increase in residential properties, which correlated to an increase in the permanent residential population and demand on services and

infrastructure. “To ensure the rates charging system is fair and equitable, Council has agreed to increase the mass accommodation rate in the dollar by 33 per cent, from 7.4551 to 9.9212,” she said. “This will see a greater contribution by the mass accommodation properties, which are supported largely by the resources industry, towards the Council’s annual budget and assist in maintaining our services and infrastructure to the community. “Council understands the transient workforce, who are employed by the resources industry, use the same services and infrastructure as our ratepayers and impact on our ability to deliver these services. “Council has resolved to allocate $500,000 towards the 2013/14 asset management reserve fund, as part of our commitment to maintaining our existing infrastructure.” Community members

now have the opportunity to provide comment and feedback on the 2013/14 rates, as part of the community feedback period, which is open from now until Wednesday June 5. The Town held its first ‘Community Conversations’ event last Wednesday, which included a brief presentation on rates, how they are determined and the role they play in the annual budget. Information on rates is also available on the Town’s website at www. porthedland.wa.gov.au, including a frequently asked questions document.

Data shows that historically the Pilbara has low volumes of retail and office space available for lease or sale. The majority of the leasing and settlements have occurred in the industrial and warehouse categories. The Commercial Property and Land Snapshot has been developed from the Commission’s regular publication the Housing and Land Snapshot (HALS) and will be released quarterly. account anytime and manage my bills, or I can set up direct debit from my bank account or credit card and not even have to worry about making the payment. “For those of us who like to reduce our environmental footprint, you can also set up paperless billing and be notified by email that a bill is available to view in My Water. “The hummer advertising for My Water has drawn a lot of attention in the North West, so I hope our customers will see the ad and sign up to experience the benefits.” In July, Water Corporation will introduce two-monthly billing to make payment more

manageable for customers by spreading water use and service charge costs across six bills, instead of larger accounts distributed less often. Issuing smaller, more manageable bills more frequently will also allow customers to track their water use, detect leaks

earlier and assess water efficiency efforts sooner. “My Water will mean that from July, customers can log in to their account and view their water use throughout the year every two months, helping to reduce their water use and in turn their bill,” Mr McAllister said.

Legendary Australian band Regurgitator performed to a packed house on Friday evening in Karratha, and local band Vincent Law had the much-envied slot of support act for the stars. In a move sure to catapult the lads to the top of the local music scene, Vincent Law said they were honoured to play to a Regurgitator-sized audience. The band has already received notoriety after supporting Karnivool last year, and local music company Signature Music nominated Vincent Law for the slot with Regurgitator. Vincent Law is Geoffrey Ellis on drums, Brendon Webster on bass, Shaun Lewis on guitar and Gary Foster on vocals and guitar. The band formed only three years ago and in a hard industry is already hitting the high notes.

developing their sound. The band started with Gary and Geoffrey, who then went on to add Brendon on bass. Shaun, who used to be the band’s sound engineer, came on later when the sound developed and the music demanded another dynamic. “We want to be satisfied we’re making the music we want to make,” said Geoffrey. Vincent Law can be compared to elements of Birds of Tokyo, Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus. Vincent Law perform hits from bands such as System of a Down, Butterfly Effect and Foo Fighters. Lead singer Gary says his favourite song to perform at the moment is one their first original songs, Better Place. “We get into it, it’s really good,” he said. The boys successfully debuted a brand new original track at the Regurgitator show that is so far untitled. “That’s my favourite song to play,” Shaun said. “It shows the growth of the band over three years.” Until the album is released later this year, you can listen to Vincent Law via their Facebook page.

Blues down the coast By Tamara Binamat Multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Phil Edgely will be performing his musically dynamic and intense set all through the Pilbara this week. On this leg of his “neverending tour”, Phil Edgely will be performing live at venues in Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha, Exmouth and Coral Bay. Originally from a small village in the UK in the Midlands in the county of Rutland, Phil has risen through the music industry to rub shoulders with blues legends such as Eugene Hideaway-Bridges, Ash Grunwald, Ian Moss, Tex Perkins, Jeff Lang and Bondi Cigars. He now calls Australia home.

“It’s always great to do shows with the people who have inspired you over the years,” Phil said. “The biggest kick is that you go from watching someone years ago to standing on the same stage. “I love performing with anybody who has a genuine passion for music regardless of the size of their profile, having said that I would love a jam with Richard Thompson!” Phil’s music is a blend of folk and blues with hints of other genres such as country, funk and jazz and he is often compared to accomplished artists Jeff Lang, Ben Harper, Chris Smither and Paul Kelly, “I get compared to various artists, which is a great compliment,” Phil said. “I think it depends on the taste of the listener who will then find their favourite person in my music.

y l e g d Phil E

event

“I think this again comes back to having so many influences that they all come through from time to time.” Phil said the highlight of his career is having wife Trudy once again on stage with him after spending the last few years managing and promoting the band. “The inclusion of Trudy gives the music more punch and gives me more room to improvise which is great,” Phil said. “Trudy mainly plays a Cajon in the duo with hints of guitar and ukele. “She also adds extra vocals. “We perform predominantly originals but also love ‘slicing and dicing’ traditional material to suit our style.”

B n R n i l l a B The guys from Notorious Cuts and Apparel are bringing RnB to a whole new level with their Ballin RnB Nite, to be held at the Ibis Styles on Saturday, May 11. This RnB, reggae and hip hop filled night will have local DJ RE spinning the decks at the start of the night, before Gold Coast DJ OWE takes over. Notorious Cuts manager Mahir Hodzic said the night is for the locals to get together and listen to some new and old school sounds. “A lot of our customers like RnB music and we always have newly mixed CDs sent over from our Gold Coast store which people ask about, so we thought it would be great to bring some of these DJs over to Karratha,” he said. DJ OWE performed in Karratha last year, and filled the venue to capacity. “This event will be massive as DJ OWE is one of [the] east coast’s top RnB

DJs,” Mahir said. Well known for his signature DJ samples and successful Mix-tapes, DJ OWE is also known by most to play ‘out of the box’ music. DJ OWE has toured all across Australia, played at almost every city and is now hitting smaller towns and communities. Mahir said local supporting DJ, RE, performed on the decks at the Ballin RnB Nite’s first event last month. “Her taste in old school hip hop and RnB was a winner and the patrons wanted more,” he said. “She is a Karratha local resident and upcoming female DJ who is really starting to make a name for herself.” Presale tickets are available from Notorious Cuts and Apparel for $25. The first 100 patrons through the door will receive a free DJ OWE CD with more giveaways throughout the night. Tickets on the door will be $30 with doors opening at 8pm at the Ibis Styles in Karratha.

Angel of Cuisine As the weather starts to cool off a little it’s a great time to get inventive in the kitchen and eat some different foods that may have made the house too hot in summer. Soup is a great nutrient dense way to get vitamins and minerals and a lot of nutrition into your day. I usually make a couple of soups per week and freeze them in batches so they are easy to grab and reheat when my days get crazy and I don’t want to think about dinner. They are also a great way to use up any vegetables that may be about to expire soon. As a basic instruction you just need to cut your ingredients to the same size. Put all the vegetables and any meat that you like in a big saucepan and cover with stock so that the vegetables begin to float. Cook on a medium heat for

about 20 minutes and you are done.

For the several years Rio Tinto has had three robots named Buzz, Woody and Spooky working in their sample station in Dampier, and the race is on to find a name for the newest mechanical recruits. Rio Tinto is currently running a competition for children from Wickham Primary School to name the new sample station robots, worth about $450,000 each and weighing in at 2450kgs. Sixteen students will be selected as finalists for the competition and taken on a site tour to be introduced to the new robots. The robots are 2.5m tall and will have an impressive reach of 3.1m once they are fully operational in August. Roberts

and

Simon

The sample station robots are designed to work in pairs, and have to be individually trained by remote control, a process that takes months. When they arrive on site their training is further fine-tuned to the specific tasks they must undertake on a daily basis. Wickham Primary School principal, Katrina van Straalen, was pleased with how the children were using their imaginations to come up with some original ideas while learning more about the operations at Cape Lambert. “The presentation provided a great tool to help the students understand Rio Tinto’s work at Cape Lambert and the robot naming gives them the opportunity to be involved”, said Ms van Straalen. “I am really looking forward to seeing what names they come up with.”

US markets steamed ahead this week with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones closing up 0.97 per cent and 0.81 per cent respectively after some strong corporate earnings from the likes of Facebook and Pfizer. Aussie markets followed the US lead and

finished the week in the green with the ASX200 closing Friday May 3 up 0.63 per cent. The mining sector continues to be a grave concern as commodity prices continue to fall. BHP Billiton’s dividend yield is now almost equal to that of Woolworths, so one would have to think that soon investors chasing yield will prevent any further rot to the price.

Government of Western Australia Department of Housing

Are you interested in providing accommodation and support services in South Hedland? Information sessions: Thursday 30 May in Perth Friday 31 May in Hedland (to be confirmed) The Department of Housing will shortly be issuing a request for proposal for organisations to provide accommodation and residential support services targeting Aboriginal apprentices and trainees at a new South Hedland Employment Related Accommodation (ERA) facility. We are seeking input from interested parties and are holding an information session to gather feedback. Input from the session will be used to make decisions on the nature and structure of the request for proposal. The key objective for providing effective supported accommodation at the Pilbara ERA facility is to increase the rate of Aboriginal employment in the Pilbara. Preference for access to the ERA will be given to West Australian Aboriginal people from remote communities aged 16 to 25, but all apprentices and trainees will be welcome to apply for a place in the facility. The ERA is to be built on a portion of the Pundulmurra campus of the Pilbara Institute in South Hedland. Accommodation and facilities will be provided for 48 residents, for staff and for short term visitors. The services to be sought in the request for proposal are: • Management of the practical aspects of the accommodation (including catering, maintenance and administration) • Provide support services to residents to achieve their qualifications and learn life skills Please register your interest with the Department of Housing by emailing Jo Swan (jo.swan@housing.wa.gov.au) or calling on (08) 6217 6258 by Friday 24 May. An information pack and details of the venue will be sent out prior to the information session. adcorp F84908

Karratha Netball launches season 2013 By Ben Leahy The Blades, Sierras and Tequiras 1 were the early winners in A1-grade netball as the Karratha Netball Association kicked off its 2013 season on Monday, May 6. The Blades were comfortable 23 goal winners over the Tequiras 2 team, while the Sierras beat the Thunderbolts 41 to 34 and the Timik Cougars did not have enough bite to take down the Tequiras 1 team, losing 28 to 49. Games were also held in all other divisions from A to C and junior grades down to Under 11s with the next round set for Monday May 13.

After a solid preseason of training, the competition and skills in round one were already high and set the tone for an exciting 2013 season in which the league will later move to new courts being constructed at the Leisureplex centre. The Association has also already selected three senior and three junior squads for the North West Championships to be held at Port Hedland from June 14 to 15. And with netball looking to grow even bigger in the coming years, the Association is keen to get more coaches involved in the sport. It will be holding two major courses during the year to enable interested

people to gain netball coaching accreditation. Details of the courses are provided below, courtesy of the Karratha Netball Association. Foundations Coaching Course – Saturday May 18 The Foundations Coaching Course is a Netball Australia accredited course and is designed for beginner coaches. The Foundation Course is a one-day (eight hour) accredited course and includes the Beginning Coaching General Principles combined with skills of netball. As an accredited course it involves competency based assessments of practical coaching, covering

the role of the coach, risk management, junior player development, program planning and safe teaching of netball skills. Participants must be at least 14 years of age on completion of the Foundation Course to be eligible for accreditation Development Coaching Course - Date TBA The Development Coaching Course is a oneday course progressing from the Foundation Coaching Course that is designed for coaches who are coaching at club, regional and state league level. It involves competencybased assessment of practical coaching and

takes in material from a Foundation and Development manual and DVD given to participants. The course covers techniques used in a range of skills, basic game strategies and information about the role of the intermediate coach.

Participants must have completed a Netball Australia Foundation Coaching Course and followed that up with at least one year of coaching experience and must also have a current Section 1 Umpire Theory Examination pass.

At the games, the ladies will play 16 matches, plus finals, over eight days and join more than 8,000 competitors and 2,000 volunteers participating in 60 sports.

Tickets to the night that runs from 7pm until late are $75 and include free finger food and drink on arrival. They can be purchased from the Icon and Travel World in Centro Shopping Centre and ensure $25 from each ticket goes to the KNA’s Masters Team.

The Karratha Golf Club hosted the 2013 Pilbara Foursomes on April 20 and 21 with the Pilbara Chiropractic Centre and Happy Feet sponsoring the event. Entrants travelled from Newman, Port Hedland, Roebourne and Perth to compete in a partnered event with a playing list of 90 people. The top men’s prize of Overall Gross saw Jarrod Hodgins from Port Hedland and Bodie Broun from Karratha team up once again and make this their event, winning their fourth title in a row with a total gross of 147. Knowlson and Rob Hinchcliffe with 158. Ladies’ Overall Gross was won by our very own Marie Nottle and Sunan Ong-Arch with a total 173. • UK TV presenter Julian Lewis Jones in town for the fishing As we head towards winter, we expect the mackerel to be showing up in the higher water column in bigger numbers, and this has been the case in the last week.

The fishing with Eddy was so full of action with so many species that the guys had sore arms from catching and casting so much during the day.

Shallow running lures have been working well, especially in the early morning and late afternoons.

They also went out with Exmouth Dive and Brad Norman to swim with the whale sharks and had an awesome experience with three different sharks in the one day.

If you’re reef fishing during the day, a floated scalie mackerel bait can often result in a mackerel bite too. Large giant trevally have been biting on the shoreline as well with the recent cooling in temperatures. The access roads at the tip of the cape can be a good area for this, especially if you are willing to put in some time walking through the sand and across the rocks. The beach at the tip of the cape can be good for casting soft plastics, metals and poppers to target other species like queenfish, giant herring, northern salmon, cod and at certain times, you can get shark mackerel come in close with the deep water so close. Fly fishing anglers have been getting among the golden trevally while wading the west side. This week there was a film crew here from Wales with Welsh actor Julian Lewis Jones as the main host.

Coral trout have been prevalent lately on both the west side and in the gulf. They have been taking to jigs in shallow water, as well as small deep diving minnows. Coral trout can be tricky to catch, but when you get one, it is well worth the persistence as they are very tasty indeed.

Falcons take charge in NPFL By Ben Leahy The Karratha Falcons are leading the charge after three rounds of the North Pilbara Football League, having comfortably accounted for bottom of the table Dampier Sharks by 43-points. The Falcons did all the damage in the opening quarter, booting five goals to two, before taking their foot of the gas for the rest of the game. The Wickham Wolves

produced the round’s upset as they move into second place on the NPFL ladder with a 30-point victory over last year’s premiers, the Port Hedland Rovers. With last week’s game against the Karratha Kats called off due to a thunderstorm, the Wolves are yet to lose a game in season 2013. In the closest game of the round, the Karratha Kats, meanwhile, sneaked home for a six-point win over the South Hedland Swans.

This annual community event promises to be another great tournament with anglers

By Sara McRobb

In all it was a highly successful meet for the Karratha BMX Club, which took eight riders to the championships, including Jackson Tatham, Dylan Bennetts, Macie Bennetts, Aron Sharp, Corey Davies, Rod “The Rocket” Gethin, Mwarna Bull and Kizzy Waddell. Dylan and Rod “The Rocket” were standouts as they beat the best in their age groups to win national plates. In fact, Dylan won two National Plates

on top of finishing second in the 20-inch class and seventh in the Under 12 boys’ Cruiser Class. “The Rocket” meanwhile made his move in the final to be placed sixth in the 45 and over, 20-inch class. Jackson rode outstandingly for his first time at a National Event winning his three heats and finishing 26th from 76 riders in his age group. Macie rode consistently, making to it to the semi finals in the cruiser class

against world ranked riders. Corey made it to the semi finals where he rode outstandingly to make this his first National titles for a number of years. Mwarna and Kizzy rode well for their first time at the National level with Kizzy showing her style against the open women class. Aaron rode c o n s i s t e n t l y throughout the event and benefited from participating at this level and was unlucky to come up injured.

Many of the classes had more that 60 riders competing, and our riders proved they were not only competitive but worthy of a National Plate. It is clearly an outstanding effort from a small club like Karratha to bring home three National Plates and have other riders come so close to making the finals. This now qualifies our riders to represent Australia at the World BMX Titles in New Zealand in July.
