Pilbara resident and keen wildlife photographer Robert Yates took these photos of a buzzing beehive in an area of the Karratha Hills known as the Waterfall Creek. Just a short walk from the Dampier Highway, the Waterfall Creek area is almost as noisy as the main road as a result of the tremendous hum given off by the bees as they go about their daily lives. But what really drew Robert to take a photo was when he noticed that a clever and rather fat spider had built his web directly in the line of the bees’ flight path. Talk about a free lunch.

Karratha teachers strike against education cuts More than 100 teachers and parents met at the Karratha Leisureplex on April 1 to protest against cuts to the state education budget that unions argue total more than $180 million. The Karratha meeting was part of a series of statewide actions as teachers went on strike and 102 schools across Western Australia closed for the day. Karratha’s schools remained open, but teachers from each school spoke at the Leisureplex meeting and held signs estimating the amount of funding they will lose this financial year. According to these figures, Pegs Creek, Millars Well, Karratha and Baynton West primary schools will each lose between $110,000 and $140,000 in state government funding. Tambrey Primary School, meanwhile, will be set to lose almost $190,000, while Karratha Senior High School will face a cut of $320,000. Speaking in Perth, but rebroadcast in Karratha, State School Teachers Union president Pat Byrne said teachers simply wanted the $180 million in funding to be put back into this year’s education budget. She said they will keep fighting to ensure that it is and that no more education funding is cut in future state government budgets. The latest protests mark an escalating showdown between teachers and unions and a Colin Barnett government looking to slash its budget spending in the face of large state debt. According to teachers at the Karratha meeting, the education cuts have directly affected early childhood and extra needs programs in the Pilbara with most local schools cutting either an education assistant (EA) or Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEO). One Year 6-7 teacher from a Karratha school told the meeting that she was particularly worried about the impact of the cuts on indigenous students. “We have a high percentage of indigenous students
sometimes with really low levels of literacy and numeracy,” she said. “With the funding cuts, our school’s AIEOs have been reduced from two (people) down to one and we’ve just heard how the high school have reduced their AEIOs as well. “Therefore those indigenous students who are low in literacy and numeracy are lacking support.” The teacher said she had one new student from a remote indigenous community in her class for whom English is a second language. She said that with his very low literacy, he now faces an uphill battle to finish his education. “One teacher in a class of 32 students can not give them the support they need,” she said. “We need the extra staff in there in order to get their literacy skills up so they can
survive when they get to high school.” Pilbara mum Jeminie Wade also attended the meeting with her three children. “My children go to Pegs Creek Primary and they are open today, but I decided not to send them to school today to support what the teachers are going for in opposing the education cuts,” Ms Wade said. “I think it is disgusting that they are losing their education assistants.” Ms Wade said that the cuts have not yet led her to think about moving her children to a private school. “Pegs Creek is a brilliant school and my kids have been so blessed to have the most fantastic teachers,” she said. “So at this stage I wouldn’t (move them) but definitely if my kids education was compromised, I would look at doing what is best for them.”

Stockmen trade whips for polo sticks By Ben Leahy Popular with tourists from the Pilbara region, Broome’s annual beach polo tournament is just over a month away and it is starting to get real for two indigenous stockmen. Myroodah Station workers Carl Malfong and Byron Malay from the Kimberley will be taking part in the tournament played on the sands of Cable Beach and are living in New Zealand for two months to train for the event. The two men took part in Auckland’s BMW Open polo event on February 23 after securing scholarships from Cable Beach Polo and are continuing their training, but will return in time for the Kimberley Challenge match. The Kimberley Challenge is one of the showcase games of the Pinctada Cable Beach Polo tournament running from May 23-25. As in past years, the tournament is free to watch picnic-style from the beach or tickets can be purchased for entry to the VIP beach marquee. There is also a range of events and celebrations in the three days leading up to the weekend’s polo action. Pinctada Cable Beach Polo director Marilynne Paspaley said the event was as unusual and beautiful as the Kimberley landscape. “The Pinctada Cable Beach Polo and the Kimberley Challenge celebrate this unique region by bringing the stockmen to the sea to compete in an event that is also unique – Australia’s only beach polo tournament,” she said.

By Ben Leahy Two Karratha secondary students have just returned from Beijing where they won a silver medal for their efforts in the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition. Sarah Mullen from Karratha Senior High School and Wayne Zaccheus from St Luke’s College spent a week in China where they presented their own science projects on plant rehabilitation and solar panels to students from China and around the world. The duo’s presentation proved a hit with the judges and other students, earning them silver medals in the competition. The presentations were based on their winning projects for the Rio Tinto and Scitech Beijing Bound competition, which led to them being selected to visit China. Medal in the bag, Ms Mullen and Mr Zaccheus then set about visiting some of China’s iconic destinations including the Great Wall, Summer Palace and the Forbidden City. Kimiko Holder from Scitech
accompanied the students and said they wowed Chinese audiences. “These students have shown a real talent for science and we hope this experience will give these young scientists the confidence to pursue their passion,” she said. “This (was) a once in a lifetime opportunity for Sarah and Wayne.” Rio Tinto’s manager of port operations Nick Serle said the two students had researched fields that were of interest to his company. “Sarah’s research into plant rehabilitation reflects the work our Rio Tinto environmental team does on a daily basis and it’s fantastic to see the same concern and interest in a secondary student,” he said. “Wayne’s project not only focussed on something being done locally in Karratha but could also have implications on how solar panels are installed on residential homes around Australia. “With the support of his Rio Tinto graduate Paul Greco, Wayne produced a great final report and even listed recommendations of further study into solar panel efficiency.”

Police nab $3.3 million of drugs bound for Karratha By Ben Leahy Pilbara detectives have helped interrupt the operations of a national drug trafficking syndicate after officers seized $3.3 million in cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy allegedly bound for Karratha. Police made the seizure when they intercepted a 45-year-old man driving a Toyota Land Cruiser and towing a trailer carrying Ford Falcon transmissions near the town of Chidlow on March 26. Police allege that a search uncovered 15 packages concealed inside the car parts being towed on the trailer behind the vehicle. The 15 packages wrapped in electrical tape are said to have contained approximately
483gm of cocaine, 2kg of methamphetamine and 32,000 ecstasy tablets weighing 8kg. The estimated street value of the drug seizure is $3,362,260. A 45-year-old man from Nyngan in NSW has been charged with three counts of possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell and supply. He appeared in the Midland Magistrates Court on April 3 and has been remanded in custody. Acting detective Senior Sergeant Craig Annesley said the seizure was the result of a four-month-long investigation led by Pilbara detectives into the large-scale importation of prohibited drugs into Karratha. “(This seizure) will have an effect on the illicit drug trade in the Pilbara district,”
he said. “Looking at the size (of the seizure), it’s not from someone who’s doing a home manufacture. “This is a commercial quantity and it’s definitely part of an organised crime syndicate, there’s no doubt about that. “The means and the effort gone to secrete the drugs into the transmission box certainly requires some organisation. “As we know these are drugs of harm. People bring these drugs of harm into Western Australia for the sake of greed and profit.” Police said the arrest was significant for West Pilbara Detectives and will reduce the availability of illicit drugs in the West Pilbara District.

Working to improve Dampier By Ben Leahy American-born comedian Tommy Dean had Dampier audiences laughing last weekend as residents mixed business with pleasure during a community meeting at the Dampier hall. About 100 adults and 50 kids turned out to enjoy performances by Dean and local band Cookie Fingers and to sign up for working
groups aimed at improving services and facilities in the town. The working groups are based on eight priority areas identified in the Dampier community plan released in January this year. They include groups that will oversee local services and facilities, economy and tourism, the Dampier foreshore development, environment and cultural heritage, town beautification, community
engagement and youth and senior services. Amanda Rieck from the Dampier Community Association said that between two and seven residents volunteered for each group in a great show of support. “These community working groups will be charged with bringing the Dampier community plan to life,” she said. “Guided by the (community) plan, they will decide what projects they want to prioritise over the next 12 months.” The working groups and Dampier community plan were created in consultation with residents and are aimed at reversing a trend in recent years in which Dampier has lost essential services, such as a doctor’s clinic, post office and bank outlet. It also aims to give residents a chance to undertake projects to enhance the town’s public spaces and community life. “Our next step is to keep up the recruitment drive for our community working groups,” Ms Rieck said. “To do this, the DCA will be running a stall at the Dampier Beachside Markets, which kick off this Sunday at Hampton Oval.” Each of the eight working

Works begin on waste facility By Ben Leahy Cleanaway has officially begun earthworks on a $17.5 million Karratha facility to process waste and recyclable materials from the Pilbara’s resources industry. The facility will be able to process commercial, industrial, liquid and hazardous waste. This includes a planned ability to process up to 20,000 tonnes a year of oil and other liquid waste, 10,000 tonnes of solid waste, such as oil filters, paper and metals, and 10,000 tonnes of other waste such as contaminated soil. Jack Perko, managing director at Cleanaway, a subsidiary company of waste management group Transpacific, said the
facility is also expected to employ 35 locals. “The construction of this facility provides a strong and stable foothold into the local market,” Mr Perko said. “Transpacific has delivered outstanding, customised waste management solutions for mining companies for many years in WA, including the Pilbara region.” The facility will include a weighbridge, 460sq m office, bioremediation area, truck maintenance workshop, tank farm and quarantine, dangerous goods and solid waste areas. Western Australia property and construction group Pindan has won the tender to construct the facility.

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has been helping millions of people around the world, including those in Karratha, become more confident speaking in front of an audience. And this Tuesday, the Karratha Toastmasters Club will be holding a friendly meeting at the Leisureplex to chat about their learn-by-doing program, which is aimed at helping participants become better speakers and leaders. Western Australian public speaking coach Peter Dhu’s battle to overcome his stutter is a great example of what is possible. Mr Dhu will not be present at the April 8 meeting, but he has run public speaking workshops in Karratha before. And as a stutterer, he tells of how he was teased and even treated
unfairly by an employer during his teenage and young adult years. Yet he managed to overcome his stutter to become successful personally and in his career and is now regarded as one of WA’s best motivational speakers. Being a member of Toastmasters for more than 10 years, he attributes much of his personal success as a public speaker to practice and taking feedback on board. A favourite quote of Mr Dhu’s is “Champions eat feedback for breakfast”. “In Toastmasters every speaker is followed by an evaluator who gives them feedback,” Mr Dhu said. “It is the feedback that enables you to unlock your potential and grow your ability to present confidently and effectively and engage your audience.” The Karratha Toastmasters Club meeting will be held at the Leisureplex on April 8 from 7-8pm. Shire plans smaller COMING SOON Red Earth festival By Ben Leahy The Shire of Roebourne will not be bringing in big-name musicians to headline the Red Earth Arts Festival this year as it looks to scale back the event. Last year’s festival ran for 16 days and concluded with a finale concert by Perth band Birds of Tokyo. But the shire has shortened this year’s festival to 10 days and reduced the event budget to $500,000. Shire president Peter Long said the size of the festival last year actually lessened the atmosphere. “People might have been at the Spiegeltent or there might have been something going on at the stage. It didn’t really have that buzz,” he told the ABC radio network. “The types of things we had on last year were great, we just need to sort of bring it into a smaller time frame and also spread the events around the shire a little bit more. “It’s not that we don’t want Birds of Tokyo and great bands, we just didn’t think it was appropriate for an arts festival.”

Town hall plans submitted By Ben Leahy The Shire of Ashburton is developing concept plans for the construction of a town hall, library and shire offices after the previous building was destroyed in a fire in January last year. The estimated cost of the new building is $9.5 million, with $4.2 million to be covered by the previous building’s insurance, and the shire seeking an extra $5.3 million in funding for the project. Shire president Kerry White said that community feedback had led the designs for the new facilities to closely resemble the layout of the old buildings. However, some features, such as the library, could be enlarged to account for
future growth. “We are also looking at ways to improve on the design layout and sustainability, essentially futureproofing the building so that it will meet our needs today and into the future,” Cr White said. Project architects Gresley Abas visited Onslow last January to meet the shire’s project team and to conduct community consultation sessions. The architects have now submitted initial concept plans, which are being reviewed by the shire’s project team. “Feedback received to date has been very positive and we look forward to the proposed building becoming a landmark for the shire and Onslow community,” Cr White said.

Sail the coast in a tall ship By Ben Leahy Pilbara residents looking for an adventure with a difference might consider setting sail on the STS Leeuwin II this Easter. The three-masted vessel is Western Australia’s own tall ship and normally sets sail with crews of young adults aged 16-25, who embark on voyages designed to inspire them to achieve their goals in life. However, once a year the 55m wooden sailing vessel opens its decks to crews of all ages, with this year’s voyage departing Fremantle on April 18 and arriving in Monkey Mia on April 25. Participants will join up to 40 others from all walks of life for this unique experience. Historically, the Leeuwin (Dutch for “Lioness”) galleon was a Dutch ship that discovered and mapped some of the southwest corner of Australia in March 1622. But while the old Dutch sailors might have been crusty sea dogs, no previous sailing experience is required to man the STS Leeuwin II. People aged 16-25 needing assistance to cover part of the voyage‘s fare are also eligible to apply for scholarships offered through the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation. Service to honour indigenous soldiers By Ben Leahy Members of the Lockyer family and the Australian Army’s Pilbara Regiment are inviting everyone to attend a memorial service for five Aboriginal brothers who fought together in World War II. The memorial will be held at Whim Creek at 9.30am on April 13 in honour of the brothers, who volunteered for Australia’s armed services at a time when they did not even hold the right to vote. Brothers Arnold and Edgar Lockyer served in the Royal Australian Air Force, while their siblings Elbert, Elliot and Eric
enlisted in the Australian Army. Two of the brothers lost their lives during the war. Captain Matt Jones from the Pilbara Regiment said the Whim Creek memorial held a special place in the hearts of local residents. “While we understand that Anzac Day is all inclusive and represents all Australians and servicemen and women who (served) for Australia, the Whim Creek memorial service is something unique for the Pilbara region because it specifically recognises the contribution and service of indigenous men and women to the defence of Australia,” Captain Jones said. Dampier Port turns 25 Dampier Port celebrated 25 years of operations last week by inviting community groups to tour its facilities. With billions of dollars invested in its infrastructure – especially since the effects of the boom in China were first felt in 2003 – the port plays a critical role in the export of iron ore and liquefied natural gas from the Pilbara. Both Rio Tinto and the Woodside-led group of companies operating the North West Shelf Venture use the port as a major export hub.

The state government-owned port also used the occasion of its 25th anniversary to donate $50,000 to the Dampier Seafarers non-profit group. The Seafarers provides support services to visiting sailors from across the globe, be they crew on massive iron ore bulk carriers or holidaying yachtsmen passing through the local waters. These services include communications equipment to help them chat with loved ones and contact professional organisations, such as maritime authorities.

Whim Creek Memorial Service will be held, starting at 9.30 a.m, in the car park of the Whim Creek Hotel. The service occurs in front of the memorial to the five Lockyer brothers who left the Pilbara and enlisted into the Forces at the height of the Second World War when Australia faced the threat of invasion in 1942. Three of the brothers enlisted into the army and two into the air force; sadly one in each service paid the supreme sacrifice.

Pilbara photographers turn everyday life into a picture By Ben Leahy There seems to be no end lately to the range of subjects being discovered by Pilbara snappers taking part in the ABC Open’s group photography excursions. In the past month, members of the group have snapped old iron ore locomotives and goldmining relics. They have also captured the dust being kicked up at the Dampier horse stables and turned their cameras onto the Pilbara Motorcycle Sisters as they posed with beautiful Cossack in the background.

The photography excursions are mostly trips to help locals practice using their cameras, but many of the pictures are also uploaded onto the ABC Open website for the public to take a look at. That instantly opens up the Pilbara and its characters and landscapes to a national and even international audience. Many of the group’s participants are also a part of the local Red Dirt Camera Club, where members take photos according to monthly themes, with the latest being transport.
For budding photographers interested in joining the group, the next ABC Open excursion is being held tomorrow (Sunday) at the Dampier Beachside Markets, which are returning for the first time this year, from 8.30-11.30am at Hampton Oval. The Slipway team were victorious in the Mermaid Marine charity cricket match. Mermaid Marine employees took the chance to knock each other for six as they played a company cricket match at Dampier’s Windy Ridge Oval last month in support of The World’s Greatest Shave. And the ball wasn’t the only thing sailing to great heights as the company raised a personal record $10,857 for the Leukaemia Foundation, which supports people and families suffering from blood cancers. The cricket match has been a company tradition between two Mermaid Marine departments, Slipway and Supply Base, since 2010, and with both teams on an equal winning tally, this year’s game was an eagerly anticipated decider. And it was Slipway who took the title home after man-of-the-match John White scored 23
runs to get the team into a winning position, needing just two runs from the final two overs. Slipway manager Dirk Verboon said that while the day was great fun, it was also in support of a serious cause. “The guys have a lot of fun out there, but they all recognise how important the event is and they’re happy to be a part of it,” he said. After the game, both teams participated in The World’s Greatest Shave event, shaving their heads, beards and even eyebrows, to raise an impressive $5928. Mermaind Marine then matched this amount to bring the grand total to more than $10,000. Sealanes, Blackwoods, Bullivants and Dampier Sports Club were all major supporters of the event.

By Ben Leahy The Karijini Experience is back next weekend with a bigger program of events that includes a gourmet dinner and drinks, Red Gorge and National Park tours, painting workshops and an outdoor opera. Last year, the event was restricted to an outdoor dinner held at the Karijini Eco Retreat (pictured). But after the success of the dinner and its potential to grow tourism in the region, organisers the Pilbara Inland Chamber of Commerce and Industry have expanded the
event to include activities held throughout the weekend. They hope to grow it into a nationally recognised festival in the coming years, in a similar manner to the popular Ord Valley Muster held in the Kimberley this May. The main attraction at this year’s Karijini Experience will still be the Karijini Dinner at the Eco Retreat on April 12, which will kick off at sunset with drinks and canapes prepared by indigenous chef Mark Olive. Guests will then listen to young mezzo-soprano Madeleine Joyce and enjoy a three-course al fresco dinner. Other highlights include an opera performance that
will reverberate around the walls of Kalamina Gorge, a landscape painting workshop with local artist Sharon Jack and yoga classes held throughout the weekend. More active folk can get out for an abseil and floating tube adventure through the restricted Red Gorge or a cultural and interpretive walk with Banjima Elder Maitland Parker. There will also be business opportunities during the networking and tourism breakfast. Cycling Australia coach trainer John Armstrong visited the town at the invitation of the BMBC and ran a mountain bike Level 1 coaching course for 15 local riders. The BMBC has been attracting many new riders over the past year and a large number of existing club members are also traveling to compete in events, such as the four-day Cape-to-Cape stage race in Margaret River and the Dwellingup 100km, near Perth. With that in mind, the BMBC is keen to provide as much rider support and development as possible through qualified coaching. Participants in last weekend’s course learnt about nutrition, sports psychology, training program development, training techniques and much more. They then had the opportunity to practice their new skills by riding on the trails and taking it in turns to coach each other. This course is the first step on the mountain bike coaching pathway and means that in future the club will be able to train its own coaches rather than

Running the coaching course was made possible thanks to funding provided by Chevron Australia’s North West Community Spirit grants, Mountain Bike Australia’s Club Grants Scheme and the support of Ibis Styles.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates
Swimmers step up for St Luke’s St Luke’s College students have continued to excel in interschool swimming competition despite coming up against stronger competition this year. The Pilbara school finished fifth in their division as they matched up against some of Western Australia’s most exclusive schools in the Associated and Catholic College Swimming Carnival held recently at Challenge Stadium in Perth. The result was a great achievement for St Luke’s, as the school finished just 15 points shy of the third-placed school. It was also the first time the school had competed against the biggest city schools, after they were promoted from a lower division due to their win at the interschool competition last year. Mark Wooldridge and Mikaela
Wilson headed a long list of great individual performances as many St Luke’s students finished in the top three in their races. Mark finished as the Under14s boys champion for the whole carnival while Mikaela was the Under-14s girls runner-up. Matthew Oronce, Chenin Bez and Simeon Kruger also placed in the top three for their respective age groups. As usual, the St Luke’s College students were good sporting ambassadors for the school, and the Pilbara received compliments regarding their polite manners from members of the public in Perth. Such trips are only possible with the continued support of all parents and a special mention goes to The MAC Karratha Village for their generous donation.
Wahoo have been rampant off Helby Bank this last week as anglers chase mackerel and billfish in this area. Wahoo will take to surface lures or sub-surface lures both in soft and hard lure forms. They are fast-moving fish, which are also sought-after by spear fishing freedivers. They can shred soft-bodied or skirted lures with their razorsharp teeth, but generally they hook up well because of their fierce attack on prey. Anglers sometimes confuse wahoo with spanish mackerel, yet they have quite different mouth and head features when compared side by side. They are also usually much slimmer in their bodies and are often found in areas further out to the open sea. Green jobfish can be great eating and lots of these have been responding well to soft plastic lures in depths of 30m off the islands and west side. Their flesh is firm and they are easy to fillet. As always, we recommend putting all fish into a slurry of ice and salt water for optimal quality on the dinnerplate. The shore fishing is productive at present, with reports of activity in all areas.

It is obvious when times are great for fishing, because the bait schools show up in big numbers. You can see large bait schools around the boat ramps and Learmonth jetty, as well as the marina and along the tip of the cape. Of course, where you find copious amounts of bait, you will also find larger predatory species, such as trevally, cod, queenfish and mackerel, or even tuna and giant herring. The boys in the shop have been using the new Strada 105 stick baits and getting great responses from queenfish between the northern end of the Bundegi Sanctuary and the boat ramp.

Stick baits and poppers can be great fun to use because they are so visual. This is also great for kids and with school holidays coming up, we recommend this type of lure for them to use from the shore. You can remove both sets of trebles from these lures and replace it with a single barbless in-line hook if you are concerned about your kids using trebles. When landing queenfish, they have a tendency to thrash about, which can make it challenging to retrieve hooks. The single barbless hook is a much safer option, not to mention better for the fish, too.

Muay thai students fighting fit and ready for the ring By Ben Leahy Local muay thai fighters will be stepping into a Pilbara ring for the first time next month as the Karratha Leisureplex hosts a sparring challenge on May 11. The event will feature muay thai, kickboxing, boxing and jiu-jitsu bouts and is expected to attract more than 40 competitors from Karratha, Wickham, Point Samson, Tom Price, Newman and Hedland. As the first event hosted by the North West Muay Thai club, the sparring challenge will be semi contact with kickboxing participants wearing full protective gear. The sparring will also be friendly, with no winners declared on the day. North West Muay Thai founder Adam Bierl said the event was designed to introduce his students to competition martial arts. “It is hard to put on a professional night, and it is also a bit daunting for those who are new to muay thai (to step straight into a full-contact fight),” Mr Bierl said. “So this is a good way to get that experience and practice in the ring, because it is going to be a full size ring in front of a lively crowd. “Also it is a chance for friends, family and the muay thai participants to see why they have been working so hard over the past year.” The sparring challenge follows on from huge growth in the sport in Karratha over the past year.
Mr Bierl said his club has more than 100 members signed up and around 30 people come along to each of his beginner and advanced classes each week. “The first beginner’s class I held was massive and since that time about 80 per cent of the participants have kept coming back and some have moved onto the advanced class. “It has been such a good vibe. “Beginners come to the classes because it is a great way to get fit and because you are also learning an art – a martial art – that is good for self defence. “It is not boring or mundane like some gym activities because every day is going to be different.” Mr Bierl said he spends more time teaching skills in beginner‘s classes than in the advanced sessions. “We do a lot more technique instruction (in the beginner class), so I’m breaking down the skills that you need and I look at each week as a block where I might teach punches and kicks one week and elbows and knees the next. “The intensity isn’t as high as in the advanced class … I spend most of my time (in the advanced class) giving the guys a really hard workout.” And with all that hard work behind them, Mr Bierl said up to 30
students from his class were now ready to test what they’ve learnt. “Some people say that there is no higher level of competition than two people in a ring – it is the pinnacle from a martial arts perspective,” he said. The North West Muay Thai Sparring Challenge will be held at the Leisureplex on May 11, with tickets costing $15. Regular muay thai classes are held at the Leisureplex on Mondays and Wednesdays.
