Wet roads and increased traffic factors in multiple car rollovers By Tamara Binamat The Pilbara region has seen a spate of traffic accidents recently and police are urging drivers to be more aware and check the road-worthiness of their vehicles.

rolling the vehicle off the road. Police said the accident was probably caused by not driving to atmospheric conditions. She received minor injuries and was conveyed to Nickol Bay Hospital as a precaution.

The call comes after multiple separate incidents involving light passenger vehicles.

Last weekend a 42-yearold male from Karratha rolled his vehicle on High Street in Dampier.

Last Saturday May 25 a juvenile rolled his vehicle off the North West Coastal Highway and received serious injuries.

Police and emergency responders attended the scene, where the driver received minor injuries.

The 17-year-old from Karratha was taken to Nickol Bay Hospital before being airlifted by the Royal Flying Doctors Service to Perth.

The man was subsequently tested and charged with Driving Under Influence

Police said the cause of the single vehicle rollover is unknown.

Sergeant Rick Bond at Karratha Police said road users are urged to drive to local road conditions.

On Tuesday May 28 a 53-yearold woman from Karratha was driving north on North West Coastal Highway approximately 4km north of Karratha Road turn-off. It was raining heavily at the time, and the woman braked to avoid collision with a car travelling in front at a low speed when she lost control of the car,

A male passenger from Karratha received minor injuries.

“We ask that people drive to the conditions of the road and the environment surrounding them and make sure their vehicles are in good working order,” he said. “And pay attention when driving - this unseasonal drizzle has probably caught a few people out.”

Smiles and waterworks at Whale Shark Festival

• Liam Furey was first over the line in the morning fun run

By Ben Leahy • Aerial artist Chloe de Buyl Pisco

Karratha airport Field exercise

Volunteers needed! help develop the shire’s emergency management capabilities in a simulated emergency landing at the airport.

Thousands of North West visitors and residents have taken part in a 2013 Whale Shark Festival in Exmouth that was so successful even the rain delayed its arrival until 15 minutes after the last event. For festival-goers, the three day event was a chance to attend cocktail parties, gigs, street performances, parades, fun runs, conservation stalls and many more activities. Shire of Exmouth community development officer Lauren Rampling said community members have been saying this year’s edition was “the best festival yet”. “I think because of the variety and diversity on offer, it has something for everyone,” Ms Rampling said.

“You have events like the cocktail party on the Friday evening, which allows everybody to dust off their glad rags, get really dressed up and make a real special effort to mark the start of the occasion. “Then there is all the family friendly stuff they do as well – my little boy had a great time wandering around and watching the float parade.” And with the success of this year’s event, organisers said they have already secured funding to bring the festival back, even bigger, next year. This year’s edition kicked off with a cocktail launch on Friday May 24 as Patrick Heilmann and Chloe de Buyl Pisco wowed audiences with their poolside acrobatics at the Novotel Ningaloo Resort. Activities then shifted to

Talanjee Oval the next day, beginning with a fun run won by Liam Furey, before community stalls opened at 10am and more than 1,000 people watched a float parade. Music acts also took to the main stage until 5pm, before artists, such as Blues Shaddy, performed at venues around Exmouth and a short film festival was screened. On Sunday May 26, the final day of the festival, more than 500 people came to the beach to be entertained by acrobats and fire performers and take part in a series of beach games, such as tug of war. Other attractions included seafood displays and marine conservation stalls, while tour boats taking visitors out to see whale sharks and the Ningaloo Reef offered one-day only discounts. The Shire of Exmouth’s Ms Rampling said full credit for the festival’s success went to its organisers. “The fact that it is run by volunteers in the community is remarkable, they work incredibly hard and they do a fantastic job,” she said. And with more than 100mm of rain falling on Exmouth only minutes after the last of the festival’s sound gear was packed away, the organisers seem to also have the gods smiling down on them.

register now to act as an injured and distressed passenger on saturday 15 June 2013 from 11am to 5pm injuries will be simulated by way of special effects makeup, refreshments will be provided throughout the day and a thank you BBQ will be held at the end of the exercise. By Ben Leahy Pilbara community members who have passed away by taking their own lives were remembered at a White Wreath Day stall in Karratha’s Centro Shopping Centre last Wednesday May 29. Centro shoppers visiting the stall were able to decorate and hang up wreaths in honour of deceased loved ones as well as pick up leaflets about services by Lifeline, Beyond Blue and other community groups. Nicole Baulch, a support officer with the Pilbara Health Network’s StandBy Response Service, said the event aimed to raise awareness about the help that is available to those affected by suicide. “White Wreath Day is a day people set aside to remember those who have deceased from suicide, and also a day about action, about what can be done,” Nicole said. The wreaths will now be stored and brought out at future StandBy events as anecdotal evidence suggests that the Pilbara suicide rate, especially among mine workers, continues to be above the national average. A pioneering group in the area of suicide response, StandBy came to the Pilbara to help bring down this high suicide rate. The group do not offer counselling, instead they help connect those affected by suicide to services available in the community. This could include directing people to counselling services, including the six free appointments offered by the Pilbara Health Network, or even to

Swinging to the samba beat By Ben Leahy If you’ve got rhythm or you just like making a lot of noise, then you might consider getting down to the Pilbara Samba Band’s next rehearsal. The group practice playing lively samba music on drums imported from Brazil as they rehearse to perform at events, like the Cossack Art Awards in July and the Red Earth Arts Festival in September. Run as a partnership between the Pilbara Multicultural Group, Perthbased arts organisation Kulcha and CITIC Pacific Mining, the band is open to anyone to join, including children.

Kulcha chief executive officer Jonathan Cope said that last year 30 people performed in the band but there are enough instruments to have as many as 50 drummers. “Samba combines both drumming and dance, which appeals to many people, and it is great rhythm,” Jon said. “It is also a large band format that can accommodate new people flying in and flying out of it, which makes it easy for new drummers to join and start playing straight away. “So we hope more people come down and have a go.” The project won an Australian Business Arts

“They are award-winning and well-known in Perth and do a whole lot of cultural activities for Perth audiences and for them to extend their arms up to Karratha is great for us,” Anand said.

“We’ve noticed that Western Australia is the most multicultural state in Australia and Karratha is a good example of how diverse our community has become,” Jon said.

“I’d like to see the group grow because it does have the ability to bring people together.

“So we started the Pilbara Samba Band because we were keen to work with the Pilbara Multicultural Association and bring a fun cultural arts project to the region.”

“And, in a way, even though it is a whole lot of booming, I still think it is therapeutic. “It allows you to get into the beat and drum your troubles away.”

Pilbara Multicultural Association president Anand Subramoney said it was encouraging that a group like Kulcha was keen to work in the

The Dance Around The World program offered Karratha’s Dance FX students the opportunity to perform in various locations around Los Angeles, including Disneyland, Universal Studios and Hollywood Boulevard. The students also participated in workshops and a street parade held at Disneyland. The Dance FX girls performed

multiple routines at these venues, which they have been working on since December 2012. In the lead-up to the trip the girls were all hands on deck, practicing for three hours per class to get performances perfect. The Dance FX students and parents spent many hours organising and fundraising for the trip, even salt bagging for a donation from Rotary. The dancers would like to thank Hicks Civil and Mining, All Seasons, Pilbara Real Estate and lots more local companies that helped make their dream a reality.

Bikers on the road - 60 years later By Tamara Binamat

• Danny Curran and Craig Birnie on their journey through the Pilbara’s red dust (below), and the bikes parked at Whim Creek Hotel today, and back in 1953 (inset)

Danny Curran and Craig Birnie have a mission to make their way around Australia on the back of their old bikes, but it’s not the first time this trip has been done before. Riding a 1951 Triumph and a 1953 BSA, Danny and Craig rolled through the Pilbara last week, re-enacting the same adventure Danny’s cousin rode 60 years before. Like Danny’s cousin Vern, the pair are creating a book describing their journey, and supporting bone marrow research. In 1953 Vern Train and Mike Lockyer set off around the country to test motorbike chains for Reynold Chains. Vern and Mike took a lot of photos and wrote a diary and upon returning back to Adelaide their adventure was turned into a book

and a documentary. Starting in Mildura, Victoria on ANZAC Day, the original riders farewelled Danny and Craig as they set off. Danny and Craig have been riding 400-500km per day and plan on travelling for seven weeks at their maximum speed of 80kmh. Through the Pilbara, they have stopped at Pardoo, Karratha, Whim Creek and various mine sites. “It’s absolutely fantastic,” said Danny. “We’ve been able to see a lot of things. “We’ve met so many people who know people and there’s connections everywhere we go. “Every day of the trip has been the best day yet.” To follow the Transmatilda journey, visit their blog at http:// transmatildarevisited.blogspot.com.au.

A former laboratory assistant from PathWest’s Tom Price collection centre has been sentenced to one year in jail for substituting urine samples that are routinely used to drug test mine workers. 41-year-old Michelle Leanne Marsden’s sentence follows an investigation by WA Police and the Corruption and Crime Commission. The investigation included an integrity test where Ms Marsden accepted $500 to falsify a urine sample. Ms Marsden pleaded guilty to five corruption charges and drug charges relating to the possession

of heroin, cannabis and a smoking implement. Judge Andrew Stavrianou said Western Australia has a significant mining industry and safety can be placed at risk if people operate machinery when they are not in a proper state to do so. He said there could be significant harm if such practices became widespread. Ms Marsden substituted samples as a favour for three men, accepted $500 and requested drugs from a Commission officer who conducted the integrity test on her.

A limited number of exhibit spaces will be offered to organisations which would benefit from this opportunity to promote their activities and programs. New WWII decoration awarded to former Karratha resident Jim Duncan By Alan Duncan and Ben Leahy

“That is dad all over.”

World War II veteran and former Karratha resident Jim Duncan has received a unique military order at a ceremony in London in March, more than 60 years after he served in the Royal Navy.

• Jim and Margaret Duncan on the day of the ceremony in London

Jim was presented with the Arctic Star medal on behalf of the people of Russia for his role with the Royal Navy as it escorted supplies to the USSR during WWII. The 94-year old was a sub Lieutenant aboard HMS Norfolk at the time and is one of only a few survivors from the convoys that passed through the Artic Ocean under constant threat of German attack.

And he still has a cheeky streak that shone through at the presentation ceremony aboard the historic WWII navy ship HMS Belfast, according to son Alan, who lives in Karratha. “The ceremony was stimulating for dad for a number of reasons,” Alan said. “But, in particular, he was actually involved and onboard that ship when it was originally constructed [in the 1930s] by Harland and Wolf in Belfast.” “And so he was even pointing out a few things to the senior officer during the tour of the HMS Belfast about modifications that had been made to the [now retired] ship which were not correct.”

The medals for veterans of the Atlantic convoys recognise the fact the voyages were one of the most dangerous in the war with Britain losing 16 navy ships and 85 merchant vessels on the route. As a UK citizen, Jim also served in various other engagements throughout the war before following his son Alan to Karratha in the late 80s once he had retired. Jim and his wife Margaret have since moved back to the UK in the early 2000s but are still remembered fondly by many in the local community, known for walking their labradoodle Sheba around Nickol and for Margaret’s active role in the Autumn Club. Jim also became good friends with Jack Renault, the owner of Karratha’s A1 Autos. “They lived in Nickol for many years and really enjoyed life here in Karratha – the fishing, the people and the weather,” Alan said. He added that his dad never boasted about his wartime service. “Jim is a quiet person – he rarely spoke of his time in the Navy and even less of the war, but he was very much involved as can be seen by his decorations.” “He still carries a permanent memento of his endeavours - a large piece of shrapnel embedded deep in his skull.” Despite

his

dad’s

quiet

personality, Jim still shared a few tales with Alan, such as stories of his engagements at sea.

“Jim was decorated for repairing a gun station aboard a ship during a battle with a German ship,” Alan said. “The enemy ship landed a direct hit on the gun station, killing all the gunners and putting the gun out of action – it must have been horrific to work under those conditions and get the gun back in action.” Alan said his dad talked about the extreme cold conditions aboard the HMS Norfolk during the Artic Convoys where the deck was often covered in icicles. Jim’s shipe the Norfolk was also praised for its role in the sinking of famous German warship the Bismarck and engagements with the Gneisenau and Admiral Scheer. Jim later saw action at the battle of Scarpa Flow and the invasion of Normandy, earning medals for his services, which were presented to him by the late King George. However, for newly awarded an extra special dad, who has illness lately.

son Alan, the Artic Medal is tribute for his been battling

“After 60 years the government of Russia and the Russian people have shown that they have not forgotten the sacrifice of the Royal Navy convoys and people like Jim,” Alan said.

New changes to affect Pilbara landlords

Published by: Pilbara Newspapers Pty Ltd Shop 2 / 18 Hedland Place

By Ben Leahy Pilbara landlords are being advised to familiarise themselves with changes to laws governing rental properties in Western Australia, which are due to take effect from July 1.

Karratha WA 6714 Local: 08 9185 5570 National: 1300 655 720

Breda Ryan: 08 9141 9106 breda@pilbaraecho.com.au

The changes include requirements that landlords prepare precondition reports, have minimum security standards on their properties and deposit bonds with the local office of the Department of Commerce’s Consumer Protection division. Senior regional officer Gwynneth Haywood from Consumer Protection’s Karratha office said it is essential that landlords knew their rights and obligations. “If people do have any enquiries regarding the new laws they can ring the local office and I’m happy to talk them through some of the changes,” Ms Haywood said. With Consumer Protection holding seminars in Perth throughout June to explain the changes, Ms Haywood said the Karratha office was planning to do the same.

“It is something that the Department’s local office is looking into – as soon as we have some definite information and dates we will be advising people accordingly,” she said. Ms Haywood said there were a number of key changes for private landlords to be aware of, such as the fact that it would be compulsory to conduct property condition reports at the start and end of a tenancy. Bonds will also now need to be deposited with the Bond Administrator at Consumer Protection rather than held in trust accounts, while all properties will be required to have minimum security standards. “This is in relation to landlords ensuring that features, such as door locks, window locks and exterior lights, are installed,” Ms Haywood said.

Information about these changes as well as topics like the timing of rent increases, routine inspections and urgent repairs can also be found in an online training package and educational videos available at www. commerce.wa.gov.au/tenancy. Ms Haywood is also happy to answer queries by phoning her on 9185 0900.

First Rio employee moves to Jingarri

Tristan Crane and Conor Hemsley were the first of 100 employees to get keys to their home in the new Nickol estate as part of a multimillion dollar agreement between Rio Tinto and the Pindan and OTAN Property Funds Management groups signed in March last year. As well as providing additional residential accommodation for employees, Rio Tinto’s support of

the 300 lot Jingarri Estate enabled it to provide diverse and affordable housing options to other Pilbara residents and investors. Tristan Crane said the new home was more suitable for a young family. “It’s exciting to be moving into a beautiful and brand new house, it has much more room than our previous house in Millars Well and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality and spaciousness of it,” he said. The family said the kitchen and the outdoor al fresco living area were their favourite parts of the house. Andrew Wildy, Rio’s general manager for Accommodation and Towns Management said: “This investment demonstrates Rio Tinto’s

ongoing commitment to alleviate accommodation shortages in the Pilbara, maintain a strong residential employee base across our towns and support the Government’s Pilbara Cities vision. “Jingarri Estate is a quality development and we hope it will inspire future investments in Pilbara housing that will help build strong and vibrant Pilbara communities.” The remaining houses are expected to be handed over throughout 2013 and early 2014. Rio Tinto’s residential property portfolio will increase to more than 3,000 managed dwellings by the end of the year, with further residential property investments planned in both Karratha and nearby Wickham. A: The first thing you need to consider when seeking ways to maximise rental return is renters live to suit their lifestyle, whereas owner-occupiers tend to buy where they can afford. So try to choose a property that will deliver convenience and meet lifestyle demands by considering these factors: • Your property does not necessarily need to be close to the Perth CBD, but easy access to public transport, major roads and built up areas should be a consideration. • Think about your target tenants – they may be families, younger or older couples. To please these people, a local school, close and decent local amenities and attractions such as the beach, shops and parks are important. • Consider the property itself. Is it new and well maintained? Does it have storage and security? Additional entertainment areas? Multi-functional rooms that could be a nursery, computer room, study? All these features will give you a good competitive edge versus other rental options in the area. Get these three things right and you can be confident of maximising the rental return from your investment property.

All with stunning views, curbed sealed roads, street lighting, 3 phase underground power. Telephone, quality front fencing, cleared building envelopes. No time limits to build. Just over 1 hour from the city. Handy to schools, shops and amenities. Come up and see this magnificent selection of pastured and treed blocks.

ThePilbara’s shale gas reserves By Bill Tinapple Petroleum Executive Director with the Department of Mines and Petroleum by activist groups about the potential impacts IT could have on local communities and the environment. There is an estimated 229 trillion cubic feet of shale gas resources in the Canning Basin, which stretches across the North West region, with remote areas of the north-east Pilbara and Kimberley appearing to have especially rich resources. Based on current consumption levels, this resource is equivalent to 450 years of domestic gas supply for the entire State. We anticipate three years down the track, petroleum companies may look at seeking government approvals to develop such gas through the only process possible – hydraulic fracture stimulation or fraccing. We realise the practice of fraccing may cause debate among members of the Pilbara community. We encourage that debate, but as I mentioned at the APPEA Conference in Brisbane earlier this week, we have time to get the processes right. This early exploration and ‘proof of concept phase’ means we can learn from other jurisdictions, as well as work with communities, incorporate latest information and technology, and ensure our regulations are robust. Debates about fraccing are often sparked by comments made

Addressing such impacts is crucial to this department, as our concerns are the same as the community’s. Activist groups play a really important role in public policy debates, however, it is disappointing that a small minority of these organisations do not always cite factual and reliable information in relation to shale and tight gas or fraccing. Some of the inaccurate claims include describing the fluid used in fraccing as a ‘toxic chemical cocktail’ kept hidden from the public. This is not the case. WA has the strongest fraccing chemical disclosure requirements of any jurisdiction in the world, requiring all companies to publish every component of such fluid. Fraccing fluid is typically made up of 90 per cent water, 9.5 per cent sand and 0.5 per cent chemical additives – most of which are found in common household items such as ice cream, cosmetics, detergent and table salt. The department is more than happy to explain what these additives are – just use our contact details at the bottom of this column. In addition, it has also been

falsely stated that 130,000 onshore shale wells will be developed in WA in the future. This figure is extremely misleading as, based on current infrastructure and equipment availability, it would take WA industry more than 1,000 years and $1.3 trillion to complete this number of wells. These are just some of many issues I will be addressing over the coming months in this column – something I am doing to ensure the public has balanced information to make a fair judgment on this emerging sector. We are working to ensure the State’s environment and communities are protected, and will hold industry to account. As I mentioned, the department welcomes any queries from members of the public and activist groups. Contact Jason Medd on 9222 0442 or Jason.medd@dmp.wa.gov. au, or visit www.dmp.wa.gov.au/ shaleandtightgas. With more than 45 years’ industry experience, Bill has overseen the regulation of the Western Australian oil and gas sector for the past 15 years. As a qualified mechanical and petroleum engineer who holds an MBA, Bill has provided his expertise to petroleum projects across the UK, Libya, Indonesia, Nigeria and Abu Dhabi.

Financial Markets By Brenton Reynolds The ASX200 was absolutely belted last week falling a total of 197 points or 3.8 per cent. The sell off was widespread with banks suffering just as much as resources. The reason came out of China as their Purchasing Managers Index numbers came in much weaker than expected, sending the already battered miners

into a tailspin. The falling Australian dollar is not helping either with foreign investment being ripped out of the market and likely being re-invested into the US. At the time of writing this the Australian Dollar is buying 96.16 US cents. Speaking of the US they had their first lacklustre week in months as the Fed announced they were going to taper off stimulus spending and the Chinese data hurt them.

Stock Tip of the Week Pura Vida Energy NL – BUY Pura Vida Energy is ideally positioned for its planned well to be drilled in Morocco in early 2014. The company is free carried on two wells (to a total cost of US$215m) and retains a 23 per cent in the permit. In addition to nearby drilling in Morocco, news flow related to its recently acquired Nkembe block in Gabon will fill the gap between now and drilling of the Toubkal prospect. The initial prospect to be

drilled in Morocco is the Toubkal prospect. DeGolyer & MacNaughton estimate the Toubkal prospect has a potential of 1.5 billion barrels of oil (347 million barrels net to PVD). Pura Vida’s share price is yet to properly reflect any upside to drilling Toubkal but the upside can’t be ignored for too much longer. Hartleys views PVD as a BUY with a 12 month price target of $1.78.

Home fresh Remember the days when fresh bread and milk landed on your doorstep each morning? When a healthy breakfast started with the smell of cutting into a freshly baked loaf of bread. Now BT’s Bakery is hoping to bring that old fashioned service back to life as it looks to begin bread home deliveries in Karratha. “I remember eating a slice of fresh bread with homemade jam each morning growing up,” BT’s owner Adrian Catlin said. “Many people miss the days of the bread man.”

“But if local residents tell us they want fresh bread delivered to their homes each morning, we will start the service in Karratha.” As Karratha’s only commercial bakery, BT’s supplies bread products to retailers across the Pilbara in Port Hedland, Wickham and Karratha. Now, depending on community interest, BT’s is looking to start delivering all bread products, including wholemeal, multigrain and white loaves, rolls and croissants, to Karratha residents. Anybody wishing to register interest in the service should email orders@btsbakery.com.au.

community social events

The Red Dog Festival combines outdoor adventure, entertainment and family - friendly fun this WA Day long weekend. Community social events bookend the main event – the Red Dog Festival Relay, in which teams of competitors run, drive, cycle, walk, swim and paddle their way around the 360-kilometre course. An evening of free film and entertainment opened the festivities on Friday evening at Kevin Richards Oval in Karratha ahead of today’s race day and tomorrow’s closing ceremony. The DooDaddies, one of Australia’s leading blues bands, played some short, low-key sets at the Welcome Night – a gentle

warm-up for the finale on Sunday, when they’ll be in full swinging blues mode! At the festival finale this Sunday afternoon, the community can enjoy market stalls, fun rides, entertainment for kids and a dog show! Four-piece Chicago style blues outfit the DooDaddies will help cheer on the Red Dog Festival Relay teams making their final run for the finish line at Hampton Oval in Dampier.

Onslow is set to experience the Passion of the Pilbara again, as the Festival returns to the region next weekend. From Friday June 7 to Sunday June 9 the community can experience market stalls, amusement rides, celebrity chefs, African drumming, live music and fireworks at the Onslow Community Garden. The Shire of Ashburton event is a community festival that started in 2010 with the opening of the Onslow Community Garden. The event was so successful it ran again in 2011 and will be held every second year. “The event is about bringing the community together to celebrate living in the Pilbara,” said Peta Hayto, manager of community services at the Shire of Ashburton. “It’s about harnessing all that the Pilbara offers at this time. “We’ve got visitors and the fishing and produce is good. “Local business also gets the chance to give back

African drumming, singing and dancing group Akwaaba are hitting the road to Onslow as part of the Passion of the Pilbara Festival 2013. The group is originally from Ghana but are now based in Perth, performing traditional African drumming and dance shows. Three drummers and two dancers will make up Akwaaba at the Passion of the Pilbara festival in Onslow this weekend. Akwaaba will feature multiple hand drums including djembes and timpani drums. Paul Osei, Akwaaba’s front man, said the interactive show will be sure to captivate the audience, as drumming is something the group’s members have grown up with their whole life. “Where we come from in Ghana, music is basically something that we do everyday,” Paul said. “The sound of music is something that brings everyone together.” Learning through family from a very young age, Paul has been teaching and performing African drumming, singing and dancing for over 30 years. Akwaaba performed in Onslow two years ago and Paul said the group is looking forward to returning. “It was fantastic and we’ve all wanted to come back since the last Passion of the Pilbara Festival.”

but most of all it provides a sense of community.” Sophie Jane and the Chilly Bin Boys will headline the concert, which will also feature children’s entertainment group, The Kelly Gang and Akwaaba African drumming and dancing group. Celebrity chefs Don Hancey, Peter Manifis and Carl Maseyk will entertain with their culinary skills and Josh Byrnes and Associates will share their gardening expertise.

NUTRITION by April Butt

aprilbnutrition@gmail.com 0406 490 614

This week’s health condition in focus: Depression Depression and mood disorders are almost taboo topics of conversation within society today. It makes people feel awkward and uncomfortable, so often the topic is avoided when really, this kind of behaviour only adds to the feelings of isolation and abandonment that are common to people suffering from depression. Statistics on this life-robbing illness are getting very serious; In 2008 The World Health Organisation has predicted that by 2030, depression will account for the highest level of disability of any physical or mental disorder in the world. In Australia, one in five people will experience depression at one time or another in their lifetime (women accounting for the highest rate), and 45 per cent will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime. Depression can arise for many reasons individual to each person. What is known for everyone is that certain chemical imbalances within your body can stop or dampen certain brain chemicals that positively affect moods. These chemical imbalances can be supported by diet and lifestyle, as well as with the support from medical professionals. Here are my top tips for encouraging healthy and happy brain function: • Whole grains: These are rich in B vitamins, which are essential for the function of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals). They are also

low GI, which means they will keep your blood sugar level stable, avoiding dips and mood swings. Brown rice, quinoa, oats, buckwheat and barley are good options. Omega 3: Research has shown that depressed people often lack a fatty acid known as EPA, found in omega 3 such as fish oil. In studies omega 3 has been shown to positively affect serotonin levels. Good sources of omega 3 are salmon, mackerel walnuts, linseeds and chia seeds. Avoid nervous system disruptors: Illicit drugs, some pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol and even caffeine in high amounts all have a massive effect on how your brain functions, contributing to imbalances in moods. Get moving: Physical activity increases the levels of endorphins and other uplifting neurotransmitters within the body. Social engagement from exercising in a group or team also helps to positively affect mood. Get some sunshine: Vitamin D acts on the areas of your brain that are linked to depression. In certain parts of the world that are susceptible to vitamin D deficiency, higher rates of deficiency have been linked to higher rates of depression. 15 minutes a day, with 80 per cent of your body exposed to sunshine is all you need to top up your levels. Eat fresh: Loading your daily diet with plenty of different coloured fresh fruit and vegetables fills your body with energy giving nutrients, giving you a natural high.

Mountain bikers head up the 7 mile creek The Scott Cycles Burrup Mountain Bike Club race series continues to attract strong numbers as forty-eight mountain biking enthusiasts lined up on the Round 3 start line at the Karratha 7 Mile course on May 25. At stake for riders was bragging rights on one of the club’s oldest race tracks before the series begins focusing on the 6 hour race with Round 4 on June 15 serving as a practice run for the epic enduro event a week later on June 22. Back on the 7 Mile track, the course was split into two different sections with some common track between the senior and junior courses. The juniors pedalled through four 1.3km laps, while the senior course, which included ‘The Hill’, was 2.3 km in length. In the junior category, Dylan Bennetts proved to be the one to beat for the second race in a row as he completed the course in 15minutes 52 seconds with Will Gethin following in 16.31 and Dylan Muller rounding out the podium in 18.51.

In the Elite category Troy Atkinson managed to complete seven laps of the course in 42.25 for a good win, while Richie Chipman was a close second in 42.42 and Ben Leahy was third in 43.58. In the Expert category, the six laps took Keith Johns 39.52 to complete and pick up the win, with youngster Matthew Orance in second in 40.23 and Greg Pickford picking up third spot in 43.15. The hotly contested sport category was taken out by Steven McLeod, who managed the five laps in 35.05. A close second was John Bennetts in 35.29 followed even closer by Rodney (The Rocket) Gethin in 35.30. There was also strong numbers again competing in the ladies category. Amanda Ewin was first around the four lap circuit in 27.54, closely followed by Tania Neeson in 30.52 with third place going to Carly Doyle in 31.58. Round 3 was preceded by another Dirtmasters session for junior riders, which included some skills practice and a ride against the clock.

With some new features on the circuit, including a log drop, log over and ramp, the kids all had something to keep them challenged. Upcoming Events On June 15, the Round 4 Night Race will be held from 6pm onwards as a warm up for the 6-hour event. Dr Baynton’s 6 Hour Remedy Mountain Bike Race will be held on June 22, so start getting your relay team together or go it solo. By Jenni Gates jobfish, trevally, amberjack, and pearl perch to name a few. Jigging can be hard work and is a style of fishing that keeps you fit with lots of rod action and dropping in deep water. The full moon played havoc with reef fishing anglers last week as spring tides had waters rushing with more force than usual. The full moon can make a great light for night fishing, however, the fish don’t seem to be as active through this phase. People chasing GTs from the shoreline find that the full moon can be quiet, with the new moon producing a better bite. However, you do have to make sure you have a good headlamp and rock-boots on if you are to fish from the shore at night. Sometimes in certain areas there can be mozzies and sandflies around rocky outcrops, so always be prepared when you head out because it’s a long way back to town when you head around the Westside to fish at night. Barbless hooks are recommended as well if fishing at night, because there is nothing worse than getting a hook in you by mistake when it is dark. It is also better for the fish when you are releasing them. Fishing gloves are handy too, and often save you from gill cuts and make it easier to grip the fish if needed.

We had many entrants in the fishing comp this month and it’s great to see the variety of fish being caught from both the shore and boats. Big fish are not always the winner, although the fabulous sailfish caught by Amy last month did win her the $50 voucher to spend instore. We’ve had juniors, seniors, big fish, small fish, diving entrants and much more this month. One great catch was a huge queenfish caught by Bob Sampson from the shore. Bob has been fishing from the shore here for many years and this was the biggest he has ever landed. Congratulations Bob. Bob was using squid for bait, which is not usually a bait people use for queenfish, so perhaps that was the secret to getting past the little queenfish and snagging the big one. Anthony Adams was fishing on Steve Daley’s boat Red Hot recently. Anthony was using a vexed jig in 65m of water and caught a thumper of a coral trout weighint 6kg. Coral trout are usually difficult to catch on rod and reel. They are usually found in more shallow water too. Perhaps we have found some new ground here with catching them on these deep-water jigs. The jigs have been successful with many species including goldband

Almost 100 junior sports stars turned out for Karratha Little Athletics Club’s second event on Friday May 24 with a bunch of personal best times broken on the night. The 97 junior athletes taking part on the night combined to break 88 personal best records in events ranging from javelin to the 100m sprint with each new PB earning an achievement ribbon. Among individual performances, nine-year-old Kiran Byles continued his

impressive form from week one and placed first in all five events he competed in, including a massive 17.25m turbo javelin throw. Zoe Patterson (U11 Girls) and Jack Clarke (U13 Boys) followed on from Kiran’s efforts, also taking first place in each of the five events held in their age groups. In the feature 100m sprint events, Jack Clarke broke the 15 second barrier to take over the Usain Bolt mantle for week two. Jack Clarke’s time was 14.98 sec in the U13 boys, while

Caitlin Walsham (U10G) ran 15.68 sec and Desiree Ieremia (U12G) 15.86 sec. Hurdles are proving are real hit with the kids (and, occasionally, their shins) with Kiara Jefferies clocking the fastest 60m hurdle time of the night at 11 seconds flat. Isobel Norris and Jack Clarke were the only other competitors to go under the 12 sec barrier. The results for the 60m hurdles were Kiara Jefferies (U12G) at 11.0 sec, Isobel Norris (U12G) on 11.28 sec and Jack Clarke (U13B) at11.81 sec.

By Natalie Gray Despite the cooler Saturday mornings of late, it is fantastic to see so many players and parents still coming out to enjoy our local version of the world game. With Karratha’s youngest players having an earlier run each Saturday, special thanks again

goes to the wonderful coaches and parents, who give their time so the kids can get kitted up in their club’s colours and chase the ball around the park. Thanks also to everyone who helps out with the older players as they entered into week three of the Karratha District Junior Soccer season on May 24.

And in what turned out to be a high scoring game, Nickol 2 ran out comfortable winners over Nickol 3 in the first match after Nickol 3 played a determined second half. By contrast, Dampier held off a strong finishing Glory 2 in a tightly contested second match to win by a single goal – well

played both teams. In the 17s competition, it was the clash of the previously undefeated Dampier and Nickol teams. Dampier got the early goal and despite a good reply from Kieran Lowicki of Nickol, Dampier were too strong and ran out comfortable winners.

Congratulations to all players and coaches for their ongoing efforts. Parents if you have any player or match photos to share please email these to sngray3@bigpond. net.au in high resolution and we will try to include them in our weekly round up.

Pilbara netball mums to be recognised in new competition By Ben Leahy Pilbara netball mums have the chance to be rewarded for the countless hours spent supporting their daughters and sons in local leagues with nominations now open for the Telstra NetMum awards. The Telstra NetMum awards will select finalists from across Australia with the winning mum receiving a VIP trip to the 2013 ANZ Championship Grand Final.

As ambassador for the promotion Liz Ellis said she will be looking for mothers like her own. “Between umpiring, washing the uniforms, tending to scraped knees, keeping score and leading the cheer squads, mums are there game in, game out,” Liz said.

Telstra general manager for Northern Western Australia, Tony Carmichael, said mums were the backbone of netball competitions in the Pilbara. “In last year’s winning submission, Jillian Boyle from the Sunshine Coast told us of her dedication to the netball careers of her five daughters and how her car would open like a canteen to feed the masses at the games,” Carmichael said.
