Community pulls together after tragedy for the magic of the circus

By Tamara Binamat From the moment the Moscow Circus pulled into town, it wowed the community of Karratha with entertainment that only a circus can bring.

Many families will remember the colourful long-haired ringmaster that welcomed our children to their seats and clowned around under the lights of the big-top.

Tragically, Alan the ringmaster passed away on Sunday night due to a suspected heart attack.

Phillip, a crewman with the circus, came into the Pilbara Echo office to share his condolences, but also give a message back to the community of Karratha that they are overwhelmed by our town’s support.

Phillip said Alan was celebrating at the tent after the show as three of his work-mates were celebrating their birthdays with a barbecue.

“Alan came back and he was his jolly old self, he had one beer and then that was it.”

Phillip mentioned that although Alan was jovial leading up to the suspected heart attack, Alan said to Phillip earlier in the day that he didn’t feel right.

“He came to talk to me on that morning and said ‘Phil I don’t know whats wrong with me, I’m just so tired,’ but he said he was alright” said Phillip.

Phillip says the team has pulled together and are doing relatively good.

“Everybody is still devastated, but it’s one big family here.

“Alan was the first one who came

up and shook my hand when I started at the circus so he’s a good friend to me,” said Phillip.

Phillip recalled with such emotion in his voice the support from the community.

He told of sitting at the beach in Point Samson and speaking to a local woman who consoled Phillip after his loss.

The local woman, Yanna Henry, wrote a public appeal on Facebook for Karratha residents to come together for the circus community.

“Today I met three of the staff of the Moscow Circus who were out at Point Samson, who had taken time away to try and comprehend their loss.

“Last night the ringmaster tragically and unexpectedly passed away due to a heart attack,”she wrote.

“I would like to do something for the circus crew as we know how hard it is when something like this happens and being so far away from loved ones.

“Any ideas on how we as a community can support the crew at a time like this?”

When shown Yanna Henry’s public appeal, Phillip’s appreciation was overflowing.

“She is a beautiful lady,” said Phillip.

“The community spirit is beautiful, it’s like the magic of the circus.

“It’s a very sad moment for us all but I think Alan would have said ‘the show’s got to go on guys because I’m going fishing forever.’”

Ringmaster Greg Hall contacted the Pilbara Echo afterward to express his thanks to the community.

“We are absolutely stunned.

“One of the first things that happened when we reopened the box office was someone came in with a bunch of flowers.

“The next two people that turned up asked how they could help,” he said.

The people of Karratha have offered assistance in many forms, from offering to cook, to running errands.

Greg Hall said there has been hundreds of condolence messages.

The circus members held a farewell party for Alan on Friday and although it was originally intended for the circus crew, after realising the support from members of the public, the party was opened up for all to say goodbye.

“We were only thinking we must have a farewell, but because the community has been so exceptional, we’re going to open up the tent,” Greg said.

When asked what message he would like to give to Karratha, he paused for a moment, before replying.

“In such an unfortunate and tragic event, we’ve found one place on the planet that has made it so much easier and has absolutely touched us to the bottom of our hearts,” Greg said.

“That response has really bowled us over.”

Greg leaves with one last memory of his old mate Alan.

“Alan was a professional entertainer.

“He loved the audience and loved performing.

“The circus was his life, entertaining was his life, right to the end.”

Notice to Qantas passengers travelling from Newman Airport On 23 August 2012 Qantas will begin ‘Required Navigation Performance’ (RNP) operations at Newman Airport.

RNP is satellite navigation technology that enables pilots to fly more direct and more efficient flight paths.

It is already widely in use by Qantas across Australia and Newman will become Qantas’ fifth RNP airport in WA, after Broome, Kalgoorlie, Karratha and Port Hedland.

One of RNP’s main advantages for Newman is the ability for Qantas to avoid diversions in low visibility weather conditions – important given the distance between airports in WA. For Qantas, the technology also helps reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Only a handful of airlines around the world use RNP, which was initially introduced by Qantas for flights to Queenstown in New Zealand’s alpine regions in 2004.

No funding for RFDS airstrip at Tom Price

By Tamara Binamat Tom Price hospital referred 177 people to the RFDS last year to receive vital medical care, but residents of Tom Price do not have an RFDS airstrip.

Last week, the Shire of Ashburton released a statement saying the council had resolved not to support recommendations to accept owner responsibility for an airstrip at Tom Price.

In the statement, the council said the reason for the decision is “it is not council’s responsibility to operate a RFDS airport.”

The Shire of Ashburton said it will

lobby resource companies and state government departments to construct, own and operate an RFDS air strip at Tom Price.

A RFDS spokesperson said the organisation supports available airstrips, no matter who pays for it.

“The more available airstrips for us to land at in remote areas the better, as it substantially enhances our ability to respond in a timely manner in an emergency, and hence better optimises the outcomes for a patient.”

In the last year, RFDS picked up 213 patients from Paraburdoo airport.

177 of those were from Tom Price Hospital, 32 were from Paraburdoo

Hospital, and the remainder were from mine sites in the surrounding area.

Not all patients were transported to Perth, 44 per cent were taken to another hospital within the Pilbara region.

Brendan Grylls said to ABC News that he supports the project and will discuss the matter with the shire.

“I don’t think it is the council’s responsibility, however they do need to help us identify a site and take some ownership of the project.” he said.

“I am sure it will be beneficial to the employees of the resource sector to have access, given that the air strip currently is at Paraburdoo and the hospital is at Tom Price.”

WA Labor pledges $54 million for Newman Hospital

By Tamara Binamat As the North-West political campaign heats up, Labor is pledging $54 million toward Newman’s health services.

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan has promised an expansion to services and facilities at Newman Hospital, if elected, to manage the town’s rapidly increasing population.

Upgrades would include doubling the number of beds, building new houses for doctors and health workers and boosting maternity and mental health services.

“WA Labor supports a strong public health system in which all WA families have access to quality health services, no matter where they live,” Mr McGowan said in a statement.

“Newman residents have been asking for an upgrade to their local hospital for a long time.

“WA Labor has listened to the Newman community and understands these

upgrades are essential if Newman Hospital is to keep pace with the health needs of a growing mining centre.

“WA Labor will expand Newman Hospital from a 12-bed hospital to a 25-bed hospital,” he said.

Improvement to Newman Hospital’s maternity facilities will mean expectant mothers could give birth in Newman, rather than travelling to Port Hedland or Perth, which can be a traumatic and costly option.

Flights to Perth can cost around $1,400 return for one person at short notice.

Newman Hospital was developed in 1973 and Mr McGowan has said it is overdue for an upgrade.

“With the population of the Pilbara set to expand to 96,434 by 2020 we need to ensure that the resident, construction and FIFO population of Newman and the East Pilbara are well catered for both now and in the future,” he said.

“As it stands the

BHP Billiton’s Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest open cut mine in the world and located just minutes away from Newman Hospital.

Mining giants Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals Group and BHP all have operational mine sites surrounding the town of Newman. The town’s FIFO population has now grown to around 4000 workers.

President for the Shire of East Pilbara, Lyn Craigie says she welcomes Mr McGowan’s comments, but has reservations.

“I say bring it on, but I think the state government should stand up and give us their commitment as well,” she said.

“I am aware that Pilbara Cities and WA Country Health Services are working on an upgrade plan due to be released at the end of this month and we welcome that.

“My only reservation is that $54 million will probably not do the job.

“If we’re talking about bringing back maternity services which Mr McGowan was saying, we would need birthing suites, surgeries and anaesthetists.

“We don’t have any maternity services at all so I don’t think the $54 million would cover that, given

that we need housing for these specialists and theres a chronic accommodation shortage.

“But at least Mr McGowan is talking about it, where are the state government? What are they saying?” she said.

‘Consumed’ art competition sets the scene for Sustainable September ‘Consumed’ recycled art competition is Karratha’s newest art event following hot on the heels of the Cossack Art Awards and the Dampier Arts Awards.

This inaugural competition is part of a month long series of Sustainable September events designed to encourage community involvement and engagement with the unique Pilbara environment.

The competition aims to promote creativity through recycling and adapting valuable items which are often quickly disposed of.

With limited recycling options available and a high level of consumption in the Pilbara, the organisers aim to encourage entrants to challenge perceptions of waste and the way in which we dispose it.

Art entries can be two or three dimensional, and made from any reused, recycled or upcycled materials to show the value of ‘waste’ and the artistic and imaginative

There are over $800 in prizes to be won, with the category winners and an overall champion announced at the Red Earth Arts Festival community celebration on Sunday September 3.

All artists as well as the general public are also invited to attend the opening function on September 22 at the Karratha Visitors Centre.

Selected entries will then be exhibited at the Visitors Centre from September 23

Winning school entries will be on display at Centro at the end of September.

Historic haulpack and loco make impressive pair at Wickham entrance

By Tamara Binamat For the past 30 years, the historic Wickham haulpack has been parked up at Saylor Park, Wickham.

Last week, in a spectacular scene, the truck was relocated to join the old diesel locomotive at the town entrance.

It’s the first time the haulpack has moved in three decades, a logistical challenge involving police escorts, cranes, and a semi trailer.

A Rio Tinto spokesperson said the event attracted a few curious bystanders, who watched the truck slowly make its way to its new resting place next to the locomotive at the town entrance.

The haulpack originally came from the Robe Valley mining operations near Pannawonica.

The move is part of the

Wickham revitalisation project, which includes upgrades to the town entrance.

Improvements will include updated information panels about the history and features of Wickham as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.

Today the entrance is quite a feature, with the haulpack parked up by the Robe River diesel locomotive, both historical symbols of the region’s rich mining and construction industries.

The locomotive has a colourful history itself, it even transported Queen Elizabeth II through New South Wales in 1954.

The locomotive was one of 20 of the first diesel locomotives purchased for use on the New South Wales railways in the

early 1950s.

In the early 1970s it was purchased by Cliffs Robe River Iron Associates, after travelling 3.4 million kilometres in New South Wales.

The locomotive was reconditioned and used throughout the period of railway construction between Pannawonica and Cape Lambert before continuing yard duties until its retirement in 1980.

It was then donated by the Lion’s Club to be installed at the town’s entrance as part of the Wickham Information Bay for visitors to the town.

Further work on the town entrance will take place later in the project schedule, when road works and upgrades are complete at the Wickham Drive intersection.

Wildlife Watch: The Northern Quoll The Northern Quoll is a member of the family Dasyuridae, and is often stated to be the most distinctive Australian quoll.

It was first described in 1842 by the famed naturalist and author John Gould, who gave it the species name hallucatus, which indicates that it has a notable first digit.

Females are smaller than males with adult females weighing between 350-690 grams and adult males weighing 540-1120 grams.

A remarkable feature of this species is that the males show complete die-off after mating, leaving the females to raise the young alone.

Northern quolls feed primarily on invertebrates, but also consume fleshy fruit, and a wide range of vertebrates including small mammals, birds, lizards, snakes and frogs.

They also scavenge on roadkills, around campsites and in garbage tins.

The northern quoll comes from the Pilbara region of Western Australia across the Northern Territory to South East Queensland.

Their historical range extended uninterrupted from South East Queensland to the Kimberley region in Western Australia.

The northern quoll has recently been listed as endangered under Australian Commonwealth legislation (EPBC Act), although it is listed as near threatened by the IUCN. The current major threat to the northern quoll is the spread of cane toads, which were originally introduced in Queensland, but have now reached Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory and are nearly in Darwin.

In two Kakadu study sites, quolls have become extinct at one site and declined from 45 individuals to five at the other site.

The unconfirmed conclusion to be drawn from this is that the northern quoll will cease to exist in most areas in the top end of the Northern Territory once the toad population completely overlaps the northern quolls range.

There are remnant populations of northern quolls still persisting in Queensland where toads have been present for many years.

Scientists do not yet understand the mechanism for their persistence; some will focus on this area in future research.

To help protect northern quolls against cane toads, a University of Sydney project is teaching them to avoid eating the invasive amphibians through taste aversion.

Power full lesson for Pilbara children Children at Karratha Primary School and St Paul’s Catholic Primary School had a special but important visitor to the classroom this week by way of a giant frill-necked lizard, Gilbert.

Gilbert is part of the Horizon Discovery Zone education program where Horizon Power’s education officer Julie Hughes visits schools in regional Western Australia to educate children about the dangers of electricity in a fun and engaging way.

The message is a timely one as the Pilbara Underground Power Project continues to connect more houses to underground power.

“The program is an excellent way to teach school children why they must never play around our work sites or machinery, approach our equipment or tamper with infrastructure such as the green domes that newly undergrounded properties now have in their front yards.

“We taught the children that power was previously out of reach and up high in the power lines where as now it is below the ground and that it is something the children need to be aware of.

“In fact, it’s something the whole community needs to keep in the back of their minds,” Miss Hughes said.

Miss Hughes said the children in both schools were very excited to have Gilbert visit and many children already knew about the Pilbara Underground Power Project and the benefits of underground power.

Easternwell Community Grants Easternwell, Australia’s leading integrated energy and mining services provider, is opening its next round of community grants on 20 August 2012.

The Easternwell Community Grants program seeks to provide financial and social assistance to the regions in which it has key operations.

It aims to strengthen community groups in a number of different areas including education, health, Indigenous, safety, training and youth.

Groups within the community who are looking for support to purchase equipment, to improve, commence building or to develop training programs are all examples of projects which will be looked upon favourably during assessment by the selection panel.

North West Fest a superb success

Well folks, in three words: It. Went. Off! From The Bad Influence to Hilltop Hoods, Port Hedland’s inaugural North West Festival on August 18 cranked out the biggest music party this region’s ever seen and the punters were indeed impressed.

A pumping crowd of 3,500 punters filtered through festival gates from early Saturday afternoon, the first instalment setting up a slick tent city on the festival periphery.

Hedland band The Bad Influence, who’d won their rightful spot on the bill less than 24 hours prior through the festival’s local band competition, kicked off with gusto.

Within hours, festivalgoers at the Port Hedland Turf Club oval had also enjoyed San Cisco, Dead Letter Circus and Regurgitator before the three headlining acts settled in for the night.

First up after dark on the towering stage were kings of funky groovin’, The Cat Empire (oh behave).

As a band, you’d have to know you’re cool when more than one crowd member confesses they’ve come from Adelaide for the gig and another has your band emblem tattooed on their foot.

The Living End then drove the crowd wild, pulling out their three piece brand of brilliance.

Hilltop Hoods capped off the night, making sure that from the back of the crowd, right up to the nosebleed section, the Pilbara got to party.

“Hopefully this will be the start of something big and will spur some local talent to pick the guitar or drumsticks up and give it a go themselves,” he said.

“We need more local musicians.”

Down at Gate D on wristband duties, North West Roller Derby president and volunteer Sherri Hughes was impressed with the whole set up.

“Sunset Events didn’t miss a beat right down to the spotless VIP toilets with perfume provided!” she said.

But George was soon to point out that he doesn’t care for money, as long as he has his mum and sister, he’s happy.

“What it is, was me getting my apprenticeship,” George confessed to the housemates.

“I always wanted to be an accountant when I was younger and go to uni, believe it or not.

“So I always wanted to go to uni, but obviously my family never had the money so I had to stay in town.

“I reckon, whatever you put your mind to, you can do it, I felt like I was obliged to help my mum and my sister.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”

“I got the best marks in my school, I got Dux, I got the highest in my maths, and that’s how I got my apprenticeship, usually it’s through who you know.

“I see, by me not being selfish, I was actually returned and got one of the highest paying apprenticeships in Australia.

“So when I got that, we were all so relaxed, even I felt relaxed.

“I think that you’re family is number one, always be good to your family.

“Some of my good friends pick their friends over their family, but when you’re down, who’s going to be there first.

“My mum would punch through the wall to save me.”

Love triangle It looks as though George is in the middle of a love triangle, with Layla and Zoe on each end.

Zoe first confessed her love for George as soon as he walked through the doors.

During the talk where the girls had to guess the guys secrets, Zoe wished he had been the one that had dated 100 women, so she could be 101.

But Layla seems to have her eye on George too!

“I think you might have some competition,” Sarah told Zoe during the week.

George gets punished George was punished during the week for not wearing his microphone.

During his workout on the treadmill, George was told by Big Brother to hop off the treadmill, face the wall and repeat ‘I must wear my microphone’ 50 times.

Flights from Exmouth to Karratha closer to take-off

By Gemma Sims Both the Exmouth and Roebourne Shire Councils have responded positively to a Qantas request for consideration of landing and airport taxes and charges for the impending flights between Karratha and Learmonth.

Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Jon Warren,

said “After initial discussions with Qantas last year both Exmouth and Karratha Chamber of Commerce and Industry conducted an online survey collecting responses from residents and businesses of both communities assessing the demand for the link.”

The 500 responses indicated that flights between the towns were in high demand with Monday,

Wednesday and Friday being the most sought after days to fly.

Karratha residents looked to get to Exmouth for recreation, while those in Exmouth looked for travel to Karratha for business, medical attention and shopping.

Jon Warren said “The five and a half hour drive between the towns was prohibitive, a 35-40 minute

flight option would greatly boost involvement between the towns.”

Qantas has suggested one-way flight fares from $86 with variations to a maximum of $162.

This new link will provide Exmouth with access to Karratha Airport destinations of Broome, Darwin, Sydney and Melbourne as an alternative to Perth.

North West residents are reminded that a garden sprinkler roster is in place throughout the year, and compliance is monitored by the Water Corporation’s Water Efficiency Inspectors.

The sprinkler roster was introduced by the State Government in October 2007 as part of statewide permanent water efficiency measures.

Water Corporation North West Regional Manager Peter McAllister said research had showed that watering gardens every second day would be sufficient in the region.

“Anything more than this is simply a waste of water and money,” Mr McAllister said.

Mr McAllister said overall the response to the sprinkler roster had been positive, but a small number of residents were still not doing the right thing.

“Since 1 July 2012, more than 90 North West residents have breached the sprinkler roster,” he said.

“Customers observed by our inspectors breaching the roster face a $100 fine.”

Water Efficiency Inspectors patrol all towns in the North West and community members can contact the Water Corporation to advise of breaches.

“We encourage people to report breaches of the sprinkler roster to us by calling 13 10 39,” Mr McAllister said.

Campus Dialysis Unit, June said she used the scholarship money to help buy her first computer.

“I’m currently studying an Associate Degree in Indigenous C o m m u n i t y Management and Development through Curtin University.

“Previously, I’ve done all my studies and assignments by hand, which just isn’t practical. The scholarship has given me the chance to buy a new computer and really help with my studies,” June said.

June has spent more than 20 years working in aged care and community health.

The scholarships are provided by Northern and Remote Country Health Service Pilbara Indigenous Employment Program (IEP), which aims to help Aboriginal people pursue healthrelated employment opportunities within their local communities.

Northern and Remote Country Health Service Pilbara Regional Director Ron Wynn said the IEP had made a significant contribution to closing the gap to improve the overall health of Aboriginal people.

“This program responds to the aspirations of Aboriginal staff by providing practical assistance and encouraging further education in their chosen health field through the scholarship program,” he said.

The Make a Difference scholarship recipients receive grants designed to support study and professional d e v e l o p m e n t opportunities, with 41 staff across the region receiving scholarships to pursue a range of education opportunities.

The scholarships are funded under the $38.2 million Pilbara Health Initiative – a five-year partnership between

the State Government’s Royalties for Region’s program and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s Pilbara Industry’s Community Council (PICC) Health Initiative members (BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, North West Shelf Joint Venture, Rio Tinto and Woodside Energy), which aims to boost health services in the region. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is the principal industry sponsor of the Indigenous Employment Program.

Karratha Airport Temporary Traffic Diversion Saturday 24 August

A minor traffic diversion is planned for Karratha Airport this weekend as the hydraulic upgrade project gets underway.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on Bayly Avenue between Cooke Close and the Rental Car Park entry from 6pm on Saturday, 24 August.

The works are programmed to be completed by 6am on Sunday, 25 August.

The appointed contractor will implement a traffic management plan to manage the diversion.The traffic diversion will cause minimal disruption to motorists and businesses.

The works being undertaken are part of the $10.9 million hydraulic upgrade project at Karratha Airport which is due for completion in April 2013.

Millars Well Primary School community garden success

By Nicole Corcoran In 2011, Millars Well Primary School decided to develop a school community garden.

Staff knew a garden would be a fantastic addition to the school helping teachers create more engaging and relevant learning experiences in subjects such as science, health and society and environment.

The garden would also create a special area for all students to participate in maintaining a successful garden, learning important life skills along the way.

Now in 2012 a wonderful garden has been established.

Students have planted crops of corn, broccoli, herbs and beetroot which are almost ready to be harvested along with many other fruits and vegetables thriving.

The recent additions of

a bright and cheerful mural designed by Cruz Musitano and a very protective scarecrow designed and made

by Maddison and Taylor Smith, also enhance the garden area.

Soon we plan to have an opening ceremony in order for community members to come and see what we have achieved with their support.

There are many community groups and businesses that have made our wonderful garden possible along with a lot of hard work and dedication from key staff members at Millars Well Primary School.

A big thank you to Mrs Robyn Gulliver and The Water Corporation for providing funds for water wise reticulation.

To Ms Amber McCallum for generously spending her own time designing a reticulation system to meet the water wise

requirements along with other important planning. Another huge thank you has to go out to Tradelink Karratha for providing the school with all of our reticulation needs at no cost!

Thank you Awesome Plumbing for their assistance with installing a water meter and the Awesome Roly for spending a Sunday assisting with reticulation installation.

Calibre wins Rio Tinto Yandicoogina contract Calibre Group has been awarded a $150 million EPCM contract for Rio Tinto’s Yandicoogina iron ore mine.

The contract is part of Rio’s wider US$1.7 billion Yandicoogina Sustaining Project.

Calibre says the aim of the work is to extend the life of the iron ore mine in the Pilbara to 2012, and expand its capacity from 53 million tonnes per annum to 56 million tonnes.

A second wet processing plant is also being added to maintain product specification and provide another platform for further expansion.

Calibre has been working at the site since 2002, and was part of the mine’s expansion from an 18 mtpa operation to the current 53 million tonnes.

The project is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2015, with the implementation phase of the work employing around 800 people.

Angel of Cuisine Food planning is a necessary evil if you want to make it easier to achieve your healthy lifestyle goals.

I have learnt from past experience that without a plan it is so much harder.

I have also learnt that when you have a weeks worth of healthy food laid out on an A4 page in front of you life feels very structured.

I like to make my food plans for only three days at a time.

That way if my tastes or circumstances change later in the week I’m not freaking out wondering how it fits my food plan.

Of course it means going to the shops for a type of mini shop twice per week, but lets face it, you probably would have found your way there for some reason or another.

I have found three day food plans both lifestyle and psychologically friendly.

I can easily think about three days of food for the family, but seven days is sometimes daunting.

It’s just as important to look at your food plan every day for the next day.

If you do them right, they contribute to an even metabolism throughout the day, do them wrong and you’ll find you crash early or make a bad choice.

When I come home from shopping I take the time to take all the snacks and separate them into snack bags.

Former Karratha resident explores life and death on stage Former Karratha resident Jeff Hansen is exploring life, love and politics in his latest play this September.

Written by Hannie Rayson and directed

by Val Riches, ‘Life After George’ follows the intertwined stories of some intriguing, but ultimately flawed, characters.

After the sudden death of Professor Peter George in a light plane crash, the AWGIE awardwinning play explores what impact the loss has on the women he left behind.

Hansen plays Professor George, a wellpublished university lecturer – who is also dead.

“The play opens with his funeral and has a nonlinear timeline,” he said.

“Flashbacks play out George’s life and the relationships to those most important to him.

“He was present, with his first wife Beatrix, at the 1968 Paris riots and this has shaped his life.

“George was a card-carrying member of the Labor party and, if you were to use the word communist, you wouldn’t be far wrong.

“You could call him the Peter Pan of history professors because he refuses to grow up – he’s been married three times to young, attractive women.”

Involved in theatre for the past 32 years, Hansen’s first role was in ‘Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,’ at high school and he’s been involved with Melville Theatre for the past 14 years in various capacities since first performing in ‘Travelling North’.

Also working with Stirling, Limelight and Old Mill Theatres, Hansen is Melville Theatre’s president and scored the Finley Award for best play in 2010 after directing ‘The Return,’ following it up with a highly successful season of the Australian classic ‘Don’s Party’ and the controversial ‘The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?’

“Life after George is a fantastic script,” he said.

“The opportunity to work again with director Val Riches with such a strong play was too good to pass up.

“The role of George has large slabs of dialogue to commit to memory and my main challenge will be getting into the head of an academic who, in the words of his first wife, has never done a day’s manual labour in his life.

“George has a personality nothing like mine

and we have little in common, apart from the fact we can both fly a Cessna – although I’ve never crashed one.”

Val Riches chose to direct ‘Life After George’ because she is a fan of Australian plays.

“I feel they are more appropriate to us as Australians,” she said.

“The humour, situations and characterisations give us people we are all familiar with.

“The play covers the last 30 years of the 20th century and relates to issues I grew up with, such as Paris in the late 60s and Che Guevera and it moves to women in the 80s, tapping away at the glass ceiling, then the more laissez-faire and accepting attitudes in the 90s.”

At the end, add gram masala and green coriander or green chilies for garnish.

A pinch of turmeric 1 teaspoon ground coriander

Serve with naan bread and boiled rice.

FISH CAKES (Chit Machell) Ingredients: 500g skinless redfish fillets, bones removed, roughly chopped 2 tablespoons red curry paste 2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 egg 1 teaspoon white sugar 4 snake beans, trimmed, chopped 3 kaffir lime leaves, spine removed, finely shredded vegetable oil, for deep-frying

Method:

Dipping sauce: 1/4 cup white vinegar 1/3 cup white sugar 1/2 lebanese cucumber, deseeded, finely chopped 1 long red chilli, deseeded, finely chopped 2 teaspoons fish sauce 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts, finely chopped

Add cucumber, chili, fish sauce and peanuts. Stir to combine.

Dipping sauce: Combine 1/2 cup cold water, vinegar and sugar in a small saucepan over low heat.

Cook, stirring for 4 minutes or until sugar has dissolved.

Bring to a simmer. Cook for 5 minutes, or until slightly syrupy.

Remove from heat.

Set aside to cool.

Grease and line a large baking tray.

Place fish, curry paste, fish sauce, egg and sugar in a food processor. Process until well combined.

Add beans and kaffir lime. Stir to combine.

• Beef Curry (Naheed Khan)

Using 2 tablespoons of mixture at a time, shape mixture into sixteen 2cm thick patties.

Place on prepared tray. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour, if time permits.

One-third fill a wok with oil. Heat over medium heat until hot.

Cook fish cakes, in batches, turning, for 5 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

Pilbara kids play curtain-raiser to AFL match

By Tamara Binamat Students from Clontarf Foundation academies across Western Australia competed in a nail-biting match for the Woodside Cup in a curtainraiser to the AFL game between the Fremantle Dockers and Richmond at Patersons Stadium last weekend.

Dockers stars Stephen Hill and Michael Johnson, himself a Clontarf graduate, helped the boys prepare for the game at a special training session at Fremantle Oval the day before the match, as well as give advice on fitness and nutrition.

Michael Johnson said attending the Clontarf College in Manning helped him complete his schooling, and also kickstarted his AFL career.

“At the time I wasn’t sure what to do, and I was asked to come down to Clontarf and just see how I went,” he said.

“I thought why not, so I went down there and finished my Year 12, and they helped me pass that.

“I was then lucky enough to

be part of Clontarf’s original Melbourne trip and play on the MCG. We played three games against really good schools over there and showed that we could match it with the best schools in Australia.

One boy from the Roebourne Academy and four boys from the Karratha Academy took part in the visit and game.

Ashton Cheedy (Roebourne), Kayden Hyland (Karratha), Jayden Brown (Karratha), Ramond Omara (Karratha) and Liam Coomer (Karratha) played in the Clontarf North team against Clontarf South.

Ashton Cheedy of Roebourne was the captain for the North Side and did an exceptional job as a leader.

Kane Jackson of Roebourne was assistant coach for the day and said he enjoyed the opportunity immensely.

Liam Coomer kicked the opening goal for North and was a great focal point in the forward line, while Jayden Brown played a fantastic game in the backline.

The South side ran away with the game in the end but the experience of playing a game at Patersons Stadium was enough of a win for all the lads.

The students playing in Saturday’s curtain-raiser were selected to play based on their attendance at school and demonstrated commitment to their studies.

Using the passion that many Aboriginal boys have for football allows Clontarf to attract the boys to school and provide support to encourage healthy lifestyles, completion of school and a successful transition to work.

For some of the boys it was a weekend of firsts, some their first time flying in a plane, some their first time in Perth, some the first time watching an AFL match live.

The life experience associated with the weekend will hopefully have an impact on these lads, and then also set an example for the younger boys to strive to be chosen for this event in future years.

Shire of Roebourne gets behind talented locals The recent AFL 16s Division three victory made by the Western Australia North West side was a first for the Pilbara, Gascoyne and Kimberley, but promises to be the start of something much bigger for North West locals with the program receiving AFL funding to continue into 2013.

The news comes on the back of the remarkable inclusion of Port Hedland product Warwick Wilson being selected to join the Australian Institute of Sports elite under 18s program, a program that boasts an impressive amount of AFL listed players among its graduates.

Many groups made this possible of course from the AFL and WAFC to the V Swans and Garnduwa not for profit groups and of course the Shire of Roebourne.

Local players and quality participants in the highly regarded West Pilbara Football Association competition Anthony Dunn,

Harrison Featonby, Nelson Ansey, Justin Patching and Campbell Garratt received support through the Shire’s Community Sporting Grants to assist their participation in the seven month program including accommodation and travel.

The next step for some has been taken with Harrison Featonby and Nelson Ansey making their debuts for Swan Districts Football Club in the colts program.

Others who narrowly missed out on playing in the WANW side have also made their debuts at colts level for the Swans in Perth include Braden Levis, Brennan Stewart and Frazer Palmer, all are burning a trail to the top level from the Swans furthest recruiting ground.

These players continue to prove that with local support and hard work Pilbara players are amongst the best in the state and very capable of connecting successfully with state league competitions.

Rugby League – Wasps clinch thriller The Wickham Wasps are the first team through to the 2012 PRLA Grand Final after defeating Hawks in the first semifinal in Wickham on Saturday.

The teams lined up for the second week in a row and the Wasps were brimming with confidence after their emphatic 32-4 win the previous week, but finals footy is different and the Hawks, although having to make the long road trip, were quietly confident especially with the return of star hooker and Presidents Medal winner Dan Payne.

Neither team gave an inch in the first

half as both teams defended staunchly, it wasn’t until the final minutes of the first half that the deadlock was broken when man of the moment, Dan Payne, busted over and gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead heading to the break.

• Taekwondo grading in Hedland

Taekwondo Club grading event it is about discipline, respect, self control and personal development which I instil within my students” he said.

Mr. Graeme McEwan was equally impressed with Jay Jay’s students and the level of taekwondo that was displayed by them during the exam.

“Jay Jay’s passion for the art of taekwondo is definitely imparted to his students; his standards are of the highest level” he said.

“The quality of the art and discipline his students have displayed here today reflects the leadership and training of their instructor. There aren’t many instructors around teaching at this level, he is an asset to the community and Hedland should be lucky to have an instructor of his calibre teaching within their town; with Jay Jay passing his exam and now a 4th dan comes with it the title of head instructor.

“He has truly earned this title ” Mr McEwan said.

With all students passing their grading, Mr and Mrs McEwan announced their semi retirement as they head overseas for an extended break.

With parting gifts and tears of gratitude, Mr and Mrs McEwan were thanked for their six years of support and mentoring towards Jay Jay and his club’s students.

“To have Mr McEwan grace us with his presence at each and every grading we have held over the years has been an absolute honour” said Jay Jay. “We as a club have been very fortunate to have someone of his level

and experience only two hours away from us and support us the way he and his wife have done over the years.”

On a happier note, a new master instructor was introduced, 6th dan black belt master Mr John Geeves.

Mr Geeves brings with him over 40 years of taekwondo training and teaching.

Trained under the late master Mr Dale Eagling who pioneered taekwondo in Australia in the 1970s, and his son Hugh Eagling of Eaglings Taekwondo in Tasmania, Mr Geeves has competed at state and national levels and refereed at a national level.

John mentioned, “I really enjoy teaching taekwondo; seeing the students confidence grow as their skills develop.

While embracing taekwondo’s tenets, my classes are well balanced and aim to be fun and informative, offering a wide range of attack, defensive and offensive techniques following taekwondo’s code of ethics and discipline.”

Originally from Hobart, John has been a Hedland resident for three years.

John is excited to be getting back into taekwondo and imparting his years of experience and knowledge in the art.

Classes are held at the Hedland Senior High School Gymnasium.

Classes run in conjunction with school term dates, term four begins on Wednesday October 17.

Smash! Whoosh! Crash!

It sounds like something out of a comic book and it was pretty close to it when taekwondo students from JJ’s Taekwondo Club were graded for their taekwondo Exams.

Self defence techniques, concrete tiles and pine board smashing, high flying jumps with mid air board breaking were just a few of the skills demonstrated by instructor Jay Jay Gonzalez as he graded for his 4th dan black belt, with his assistant instructors Ricardo Alcala and Michael Wallace grading to 2nd dan, junior black belt Brody Mellberg to 2nd poon, 12-year-old Kaine Wallace grading for junior black belt 1st poon, and 23 of his students ranging from white belts through to red belts.

Australian Taekwondo Academy 7th dan black belt master Mr Graeme McEwan and 2nd dan black belt Mrs Shelley McEwan made the trip from Karratha to grade Jay Jay and his students on Saturday August 18.

The students anxiously watched as their instructor and assistant instructors were put through their paces by Mr McEwan.

Not just punching and kicking techniques, they individually demonstrated all the patterns ranging from beginner white belt rank through to their highest grading rank, and said them in Korean!

Terminology, technique and history of the many patterns in taekwondo made up the exam.

“It was an adrenalin packed, exhilarating grading,” commented a club parent.

“The atmosphere within the gym that day had us all holding our breath during the tile and board smashing. “You could almost feel the energy, concentration and calming that was required in each different category of their exam and watching them literally fly through the air over three people and smash a board on the other side was cause for a standing ovation.

“They all did so well, very inspiring for the younger belt ranking students.”

Jay Jay said “I think it was great my students were able to witness not just my exam, but also the other four black belt students, especially the junior black belt students.

“I feel this has given them a better understanding of the art of taekwondo and what is expected of them should they wish to achieve the level that we attained today and possibly further.

Kumarina desert race The results are in!

The Kumarina desert race is now done and dusted for 2012, this year saw a remarkable 55 riders participate in the event coming from all over the state and as far as New South Wales.

The event attracted names such as Matt Fish, Warren & Vernon Strange, who are all well known in the desert racing community.

Day one of the event saw NSW rider Mathew Fish take the lead with brothers Warren and Vernon Strange hot on his tail and the Gas Dash winner Warren Kempton of Canarvon close behind.

Day two saw Warren Kempton fail to start due to mechanical failure, then around the 90 kilometre mark Mathew Fish was also out of the race due to mechanical failure.

Brett Beaumont and his KTM 450SXF set the fastest lap for the weekend on his first lap on day two with a 1:16:12 time making him the man to beat.

However young Carnarvon Rider Cody Upton was out to prove that the lesser powered 250s were up to the challenge against the high powered 450s, piloting his

Yamaha YZ250F to an impressive lap time of 1:17:25, the fifth fastest lap time for the weekend.

Tim Dewaard from Karratha blew everyone away with his never say die attitude, riding his monster KTM 990 Adventurer through the tight riverbed terrain to complete four of the five laps before unfortunately running out of time on day two, however his sheer determination to finish the race was remarkable and worth noting.

In the quad class, Jess Grigson from Newman was the one to beat, setting the fastest lap times for the quads.

Mechanical failure took its toll on the quads with Jess being the only quad to finish the race, giving him the first and only place victory in the quads.

The Newman-Kumarina Desert Race was started in the late 1990’s and is now hailed as Newman Enduro Club’s premier event.

The race was originally a two day race from Newman to Kumarina Road House and back, at a total distance of approximately 340 kilometres.

region the event was moved to Kumarina Station.

Kumarina Station is a working cattle station 170 km south of Newman in the heart of the Pilbara.

Riders camp together on the station, amongst the pit area of the race, or stay at the motel accommodation provided by the roadhouse.

Local town groups such as St John Ambulance and State Emergency Service provide support for the event.

of mostly station track linked together with fast flowing riverbed and single tracks.

This course was an extremely fast course with bikes reaching speeds more than 160 km/h regularly.

In the interest of safety a 58 km course was marked in 2011, consisting predominantly of single trail and riverbed.

Even though this course overall was a lot slower, it was not uncommon for riders to reach high speeds.

In 2012 the course was again 100 km in distance, using the 58 km course of 2011 as the foundation.
