Frank Butler leaves a legacy

Almost 11 months after the construction of the Frank Butler Community Centre began; the doors were opened for the first time last Wednesday.

Shire of Roebourne president Fiona WhiteHartig said she was excited at the prospect of what this Community Centre really means for the town and those who live here.

“For the parents who will spend hours in the kiosk and canteens as their children play sport on the oval,” she said.

Nickol Bay Naturalist Club

By Jenny Fox The Nickol Bay Naturalist Club was a not for profit community group catering for those interested in flora and fauna and the environment.

It was formed back in the early 80’s by a group of like-minded individuals, some of whose careers were environmentally based.

The club provided opportunities for

volunteers to participate in outings/ excursions, environmental projects, group discussions etc. but was wound down back in 2006, when some of the key organisers left town.

For some time now there has been discussion about getting the group up and running again so a meeting date has been organised for 7pm on Wednesday, July 4 at Welcome Lotteries House in Morse Court, Karratha.

Expressions of interest are being sought from anyone (including families) with a love of the environment who would like to get together on a monthly basis for a couple of hours (not including excursions) to discuss and learn about topics of interest.

Ideas will also be sought for the planning stages.

WA Governor checks out town

By Courtney Bertling The WA Governor took time from his busy schedule to organise a series of regional visits, including Karratha, to see what it is like in the area.

The focus of the visit was to look at schools, agriculture and initiatives from both big companies and small businesses in the area.

WA Governor, Malcolm McCusker, said it is easy enough to sit back in Perth and read the paper, but you don’t get a real grip on it.

“It’s not until you come here and see the incredible scale of the activities that are taking place,” he said.

“This at the moment is the epicenter of the Western Australian industry and of Australia.”

During his visit, some of the places the Governor stopped in at included Woodside, Rio Tinto, the Burrup Peninsular to check out the rock art and also Aurora Algae.

Aurora Algae founder Mathew Caspari said that this major visit would give him a chance to talk to the Governor about the plans on expanding the site.

“I think there is a very good interest from the Government of what we are doing, the support from the Government in the beginning has just continued to grow,” he said.

“We have been able to show

some people the project in the past, and having the Governor come is a really big deal for us, so we are very pleased to show him around.”

Mr Caspari said that Aurora Algae is very unique and he was excited to show the Governor the work that they are doing.

“It’s really exciting and we view it as a new agricultural background,” he said.

“We will show the Governor the whole facility start to finish, but one of our highlights is our control system, so the process to actually highly automated.

“It is a more technologyadvanced project than people might think.

“It’s not just some algae growing in some pond; it’s a very controlled operation to how we grow the algae.”

The WA Governor said Aurora Algae is a very good facility and it is very heartening to see that we have other industries that are developing here apart from simply mining resources.

“I am impressed by the amount of technology that has gone into the project,” he said.

“There is at least three different areas of expertise, that is something that hasn’t been done before.”

Aurora Algae will begin stage one of their 400ha expansion project mid-2013.

I love ancient history. For instance, back in 2008 when I originally wrote this poem, texting with abbreviations was still a tad newish.

Not totes, but sorta. Five years later and I’m still struggling to cope with the fact that the past tense version of the verb “to text” is generally accepted as “texted”.

There will be a Bright Blue Event held in Dampier at the Community Hall on Saturday, July 28, 2012.

Karratha Police received a report last week where a person went to a residence to clean the pool.

Once he had finished cleaning the pool he walked out the front to get in his car.

When he walked to his car he saw that his car door was wide open and his valuables that he had left inside his car had been moved.

He had left his mobile phone and his wallet in the unlocked car.

It only takes a few minutes for an offender to walk past and try a car door handle to see if it is unlocked and only seconds for them to steal anything inside.

In this case the offenders stole the mobile phone and ran away before being spotted by the owner.

Parental Translation: “What are you doing Taylor?”

“Managed to get locked in the ladies’ at work and am late for a meeting.”

“That’s hilarious! Got to go. Bye.” “Thanks a lot!”

These kinds of offences will continue to happen around Karratha unless you lock your car.

Don’t let these privacy invading offences happen to you, lock you car and home before it’s too late.

Bright Blue is a not-for-profit, public ancillary fund, established

by WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan in March 2011.

The mission is to raise money and allocate 100% of donations towards purchasing specialised medical equipment for both research and direct treatment in helping sick kids throughout WA and beyond on an annual basis.

A number of Police Officers along with Pilbara District’s, Inspector Kevin Dale and Dampier Police’s Officer In Charge, Sergeant Dave Loverock will participate in a 3800km fundraising motorcycle ride across the country.

Bright Blue has raised $500,000 over the past two years to help sick children in WA. Help us support the cause and come along to the Dampier Community Hall on Saturday, July 28, it is just $80 a ticket.

EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara

President’s Message Welcome to another news update from the Shire of East Pilbara.

Please note that parking fees will be introduced to all short and long term car parks at Newman Airport during July 2012. This will require patrons who chose to use these car parks to pay for this privilege against Council approved rates.

A phased introduction of fees will be introduced as of 1000am on Saturday 30 June 2012. As of that time and date patrons will have to follow the procedures for access and exit as explained above although actual payment will not be required during this time. However, access tickets will still have to be processed through a pay station before exit out of a car park can be gained.

AS OF MIDNIGHT ON 21 July 2012 ACTUAL PAYMENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO EXIT RESPECTIVE CAR PARKS. The implementation of parking fees has been necessitated by the increasing demand for short and long term parking at Newman Airport, and the associated high cost involved in establishing and maintaining such facilities. If you are planning to visit Newman Airport in the near future please read the related costs associated with parking fees in this news update to ensure you are prepared for your visit.

And even though it’s winter there are plenty of activities for our young people at the Newman Youth Centre. Please see the updated July schedule for the centre in this update.

Frank Butler leaves a legacy

“For the parents who will spend hours in the kiosk and canteens as their children play sport on the oval,” she said.

“The hours of training that will take place every week as athletes prepare themselves for the weekend.

“The races that will be run, and the memories that will be created.

“This is what community is really about.

“It’s about creating memories and enjoying our endless summer.

“It’s about working together and

building friendships.

“It’s about living in a community that you are proud to call home.”

Cr White-Hartig said the centre is more than a new set of clubrooms; it has been designed with the whole community in mind.

But why was it called Frank Butler, who is Frank Butler?

In 1972, Frank and his family travelled from Perth to Karratha.

“From Canarvon to Karratha, it was all corrugated roads,” daughter Naomi Evans said at the opening.

“We thought ‘My God, where are we going?’”

“I remember Mum saying when we got to the LIA, ‘If that’s Karratha, we’re just turning straight around and heading back’.

But obviously the Butler family thought Karratha was special, with Frank living here for 20 years, and in that time leaving his mark in most of the sporting groups.

Frank Butler formed a number of sporting groups in his 20 years of living in Karratha, with the highlight being the formation of the Cardinals Football Club in 1979.

The Cardinals were formed after the collapse of the Under 16 football in the area.

Frank Butler was the main drive behind the formation of the club and as Frank was a fanatical West Perth supporter this was how the club got the name the Cardinals and the red and blue colours – the name was then changed to the Karratha Falcons Football and Sporting Club in 1987.

Frank was also the man behind the Karratha Bowling Club, after playing in Dampier and wondering why there was not a bowling club in Karratha.

It is obvious that without Frank Butler’s commitment to the town and sport, many sporting facilities and clubs would not be operational today if it weren’t for him.

Skipper Brad meets Buzz Aldrin Originally from Carnarvon, Brad Beaumont or Skipper Brad had a special treat last week when he met the second man to set foot on the moon, Dr Buzz Aldrin.

It was Dr Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins who flew the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon in July 1969.

Carnarvon was alive with the excitement of this rare occurrence when Buzz Aldrin was invited to open the new space museum.

At 82, Buzz is extremely active and as the keynote speaker at the cocktail party, proved to be as motivational with his presentation as he is in his life’s ambition to set foot on the moon.

One of his interesting tales he shared with the audience was when “Neil was on the surface of the moon and it was my turn to leave the Lunar Module, I carefully closed the hatch as I stepped onto the ladder making sure it did not lock”.

That almost bought the house down.

Another rib tickler was “Neil and Michael were in the command module 300 feet off the ground before lift-off.

“It was my turn to enter the module, I took a moment to look at the horizon and the sun rising over Coco Beach and thought to myself my life has been fantastic.... to this point,” again the crowd saw the funny side.

Brad was fortunate as a 14-year-old to witness the landing in the old “tin shed”, the picture theatre during the sixties.

There were no TV’s in Carnarvon at that time and the

Tracking Station piped a vision down to monitors at the theatre and they saw Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon.

Brads sister, Dee Beaumont (who now lives in England) was working at the NASA tracking station at that time and had a firsthand account of the Tracking Stations role in communicating with Apollo 11 during its flight to the moon.

ABC presenter Scott Lamond and reporter Ebony Spriggs represented the ABC at the “one off” life occurrence and were able to bring Carnarvon’s experience to the rest of the radio world around Australia.

Brad, being part of the media through the ABC, had the extra thrill of asking Dr Buzz Aldrin a question during the crowded media interview.

“Dr Aldrin, as a teenager I watched you and Neil Armstrong step from the Module onto the lunar surface, through the technology of our tracking station as there were no TV’s at that time, what was your feeling as your foot touched the surface,” Brad asked.

Dr Aldrin answered by stating they had to land on the moon first, and with 60 seconds of fuel they found they were over rocks, so they had to manoeuvre away.

“We managed to land with 15 seconds of fuel left, almost indescribable on the surface, but very empty and vast,” he said.

Brad said that Carnarvon should be proud of their involvement in the moon shot.

“And more particularly proud of putting on a great show in one of our northwest towns for one of the greatest achievements of modern man,” he said.

CARE’s third cleanup for the year The Karratha CARE group will host its third community litter cleanup for 2012 on Sunday, July 8.

The cleanup will focus on sections of the Dampier Highway, Karratha Road and nearby areas.

Every bag collected on the day will raise $6.00 for the Karratha Softball Association and help to lift the appearance of the town.

This is made possible by the Shire of Roebourne’s ‘Bucks for Bags’ program.

People can volunteer on the day for as little or as long as they want.

Volunteers are to meet at 8am at the Karratha Visitors Centre on the

morning of the cleanup for a short safety and logistics briefing.

If you are running late on the day (or plan to sleep in a little), be aware that a CARE volunteer will remain at the Visitors Centre until 9am with all of the required cleanup equipment and resources ready and waiting.

Volunteers will need to bring sun protection, plenty of water, enclosed shoes and gloves – if they have any.

CARE will then provide garbage bags, extra water and gloves, sunscreen, a volunteers BBQ, first aid kit and sharps containers.

In the weeks following the cleanup, Karratha will be scrutinised by the Keep Australia Beautiful Council of Western Australia’s Tidy Towns judges.

So, the CARE group are asking people to lift the appearance of the town’s main roads and give the judges a clean welcome to Karratha! CARE look forward to seeing another strong turnout on the day.

Pole dancer gives confidence

By Courtney Bertling Who knows the importance of confidence better than dancer Matty Shields?

Matty began dancing at the age of nine and now at 26-years-old, he is best known for his pole dancing on 2011 Australia’s Got Talent.

Lots of people go on stage everyday to sing and dance, but how many people can do that with no pants?

Matty did just that.

If you don’t remember Matty, then imagine an audience, including the three judges from the show, waiting for a beautiful

woman, dressed in a glittery bikini, to grace the stage.

What happened shocked everyone.

Out walked an Aboriginal male, Matty, dressed in a black singlet and his jocks, ready to give a performance of a lifetime.

So, because of his confidence, YOTHD10 invited Matty to visit Roebourne on Friday, June 22 to mentor a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who made it into the Naidoc Idol Finals.

He gave the finalists tips for performing and how to be more confident while performing.

“I want to show them how to bring the confidence that is inside of them, out,” he said.

“Dancing taught me how to express myself, as it is a very spiritual thing.”

Matty said he wanted to show the finalists how important they are to the world.

“The Aboriginal culture is a very artistic culture,” he said.

Twilight Markets a big hit again

By Courtney Bertling The Twilight Markets were on again last weekend at the Karratha Family Centre.

Lynsey Wellings from the Karratha Family Centre said it is all about showcasing all of the talent in the local community and bringing it all together.

“We have had so many volunteers, ready to help out,” she said.

“Everyone really gets behind it and you can see that by all of the different types of stalls.”

Ms Wellings described the annual markets as a family orientated event.

“When you look around, it is very

family friendly and you see a lot of familiar faces,” she said.

“There is a wide variety of different stalls, it’s pretty much everything that you see in the Shire, in the same place at the same time.

“There’s art, plants, clothes, jewellery and so much more.”

A raffle was also held on the day, with every stall donating one item to the raffle.

All proceeds raised from the raffle and sausage sizzle, which was kindly donated

by All Seasons Hotel, will be put back into the Karratha Family Centre for the community.

Scouts get rid of that pesky weed The Third Karratha Venturer Scout Unit participated in weed irradiation at Miaree pool this June.

It has been very clear to the Venturers that their work has made a difference where the public interact with the river.

Some areas either side of the recreational area is now chocked with the weed called Parkinsonia.

It is clear that unchecked the weed has the ability to take over natural Flora.

The Venturers have studied the area when walking in and around the Maitland River above and below Miaree Pool.

In conjunction with the Parkinsonia

irradiation the Venturers participated in a night Navigation challenge through some dense sections of the river testing their knowledge of reading a map and in the use of a compass.

The Venturers commented “that you don’t have to walk far to become entangled in prickly pest Parkinsonia.”

They know first hand how many seeds this weed can drop in season as hundreds of new saplings were pulled out in an area clear under a year ago.

At times it seems like trying to hold back the tide…. but their commitment to keeping at least part of the Miaree Pool clear of the pesky weed is paying off.

Deadly Sista Girlz teaches leadership

By Courtney Bertling A new program called the Deadly Sista Girlz, located at the Karratha Senior High School is available for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Originally called Dare to Dream when the program began in 2007, started due to the lack of programs available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls.

It was identified by founder, Shannon McGuire, that there were lots of programs for the boys, but nothing for the girls.

So, Dare to Dream began, teaching girls about modeling, then slowly bringing in other programs, including sexual health, self esteem, healthy relationships, drug and alcohol use and leadership.

There are currently 21 girls involved with the Deadly Sista Girlz in Karratha, with hundreds of others located around the country including Broome, Perth and a number of programs being held interstate.

Deadly Sista Girls offers the girls a stable environment in which they can discuss current and personal issues they may be facing and also allows the girls to trust and receive guidance from great Indigenous female role models.

Each girl has the opportunity to be personally mentored throughout the program and it is their goal to allow the girls to be confident with their abilities to achieve success in all their endeavours.

The girls will continue to learn with the Deadly Sista Girlz with Rebecca Corbett and Sarai Cedar and will be treated to programs held throughout the year with mentors from Perth.

During the first two-day program held on Monday and Tuesday, June 25 and 26, mentors Kelly Hedland and Alicia Janz flew up from Perth to teach the girls about leadership and being role models.

“We teach the girls about pathways available for leaders,” Ms Hedland said.

“We get to see the girls grow and improve in life, not just with themselves, but how they are in the community.”

“We have specifically targeted programs that enable us to build strong independent women in our community.”

The Deadly Sista Girlz is supported by the David Wirrpanda Foundation.

Fuel Shortages in the Pilbara Member for Pilbara, Tom Stephens MLA, said he shares the concerns of Pilbara and Kimberley residents who have again been hit by diesel outages at various Shell/ Coles Express Service Stations in the Pilbara.

This adversely impacts on both local people and the many visitors and workers in these regions at this time of the year.

As well as tourists, there are many workers engaged in the resource sector or service sector to the full range of industries who are hit hard by these fuel outages.

Mr Stephens today called on Shell to get on with sorting out their tank configuration issues to meet the current requirements for diesel by Pilbara locals and tourists alike.

“There are too many Pilbara travellers who are inconvenienced and stranded in towns like Paraburdoo, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek who can travel no further until new supplies of diesel arrive,” Mr Stephens said.

“The negative effects this has on locals and on the resources and tourism sectors within the region is intolerable.

“There are a whole range of local businesses in these towns that rely on the passing trade.

“It is embarrassing in a rich state that we cannot adequately cater for our locals and our visitors alike, and I call on the Barnett/Grylls State Government to release land for competing fuel companies to establish additional road houses and town-based service stations to ensure that large fuel monopolies do not leave us with this regular shortfall of diesel each winter,” Mr Stephens said.

FMG’s national park passes a Pilbara first

The mad hatters of Roebourne The Roebourne Visitor’s Centre held their Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday, June 21 with a Mad Hatters Morning Tea. About 25 participants made hats on the day and about 65 people came through the centre, raising $300 from donations going towards the Cancer Council.

Centre manager Ruth Ellis said that they had a morning tea following by a sausage sizzle.

“We all had a laugh and a great morning

was had by all,” she said.

“There were flat/flowery hats, peaked streamy hats and everything you could put on them.

“I guess they got their ideas from the mood of the day.”

Ruth said that one of her staff came up with the idea of Mad Hatter.

“We tried to make it interesting this year,” she said.

Fortescue Metals Group has become the first resources company to purchase national park passes in bulk for its Pilbara workforce.

Department of Environment and Conservation Pilbara Parks and Visitor Services Regional Leader Alex Bowlay said the collaboration with Fortescue was in response to increased visitation to Karijini and Millstream Chichester national parks by the company’s Solomon Project workforce.

“Fortescue employees and contractors are visiting waterholes and popular day use areas in the national parks and we wanted a system to encourage them to make return visits and engage with DEC rangers,” Mr Bowlay said.

“This is the first time DEC has negotiated with a resources company regarding workforce recreation opportunities in the Pilbara, and the department want Fortescue’s example to lead the way for other organisations to purchase national park passes.”

Scott Hansen from Fortescue’s Tom Price Community Office said the initiative was a unique way to ensure environmental and

community benefits for all parties.

“Karijini and Millstream Chichester national parks are spectacular and unique parts of the world, and Fortescue recognises the importance of managing visitation by people attached to our activities,” said Mr Hansen.

“Fortescue is very pleased that DEC collaborated to produce the unique park passes and looks forward to ongoing interaction with its personnel on managing recreation opportunities.”

Mr Bowlay said resources sector workers were now discovering additional benefits to working in the Pilbara, which is home to some of Australia’s most awe-inspiring natural areas.

“If we can get people into our national parks it will give them a better sense of the Pilbara’s diversity,” he said.

The 100 national park passes cover entry to Pilbara national parks, including Karijini, for 12 months.

They have been designed to be hung from a vehicle’s rear vision mirror, making them highly visible to DEC rangers.

Strategic Community Plan 2012-2022

St Paul’s Primary School held their NAIDOC celebrations on Monday, June 25.

The kids were able to enjoy face painting, kite making, painting banners, learning to make damper and kangaroo stew and much more.

Members of the Mawaamkarra Health Service visited the school to give the students a chance to learn how to make damper, kangaroo stew and even have a taste.

The students were organized into groups, which contained students from every year from pre-primary to year seven.

Principal Santino Giancono said that it is really important for the students to learn about the Aboriginal heritage.

“We have a number of Aboriginal students, and it gives them a chance to show off their culture and also encourages us to have visitors, such as the Mawaamkarra Health Service to show the kids about the Aboriginal culture,” he said.

“And the students really want to learn, they are very enthusiastic when it comes to NAIDOC.”

The overwhelming response for the first round of Call for Papers clearly indicates the interests of organizations and individuals working in the field of Indigenous Health to improve the Indigenous people’s health throughout this nation.

More than 70 % of the submitted papers are from community based organizations, wishing to share their successes in programs implemented within their communities / regions.

Within twelve weeks of first publishing the event, we’ve received dozens of papers from every state and territory and numbers are filling fast;

hence, we encourage anyone who wishes to attend the conference to register as soon as possible.

The Karratha Family Centre has an exciting new initiative, “The Indigenous School Readiness Program”.

The aim of this class is to promote and support early learning but also to value and embrace the Indigenous culture.

This specially adapted curriculum reflects the new Australian Early Years Learning Framework and covers reoccurring issues seen within children coming from isolated areas such as the Pilbara.

This class is aimed at reaching the Indigenous community with much emphasis on respecting and understanding the diversity of Indigenous culture and learning styles.

The program’s focus is to develop a child’s communication, literacy and numeracy skills while enhancing a child’s social and emotional development and being supportive of cultural diversity.

This will be achieved by offering a variety of creative arts, music and developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that support the current education curriculum and cultural differences.

The children’s learning will be guided and supported to increase the possibility of a smooth transition into a western style education system - thus ensuring the children feel comfortable, confident and developmentally ready to enter the school system.

The Karratha Family Centre believes education starts at a young age.

If we can create a fun and supportive environment that engages young children so that they attend our weekly classes children are more likely feel part of the local community, make new friends and have better attendance in other education systems.

While experiencing all the wonderful social benefits of taking an active role in their child’s education, we believe the parents are more likely to send their child to school after a positive experience within an early education environment.

The Aboriginal School Readiness Program is suitable for children who are 3 to 5 years old.

Successful weeding day The Karratha Enviro Group has had a successful inaugural weeding day at Chindawarriner Pool in Millstream-Chichester National Park.

Ten hardy volunteers helped remove invasive Indian Waterfern and Passionvine from the streams and surroundings of the pool.

The streams flowing from the pool have become infested with Indian Waterfern, which spreads through the streams and inhibits native plants.

Another invasive plant that was the target of vigorous removal was passionvine – a fast growing and wide spreading vine that smothers other plants.

The trip was a fun day out for the volunteers, including a walk around the Chindawarriner Pool area, some hard weeding work and then a relaxed bbq to finish before returning home.

The volunteers managed to clear

approximately 100m of Waterfern from the streambed and remove passionvine from a patch of land near Chindawarriner Pool itself.

Future weeding trips will be held once a month to continue on with the work and help protect and preserve this unique Pilbara feature, with the help of the local rangers and any interested volunteers.

Anybody interested in joining up to the Karratha Enviro Group or getting involved in projects such as Sustainable September, or the Plastic Bag Free Karratha campaign, can meet the group at the Millars Well Market on the third Sunday of each month.

The group sell seedlings, cloth bags and juice to fundraise for these future projects and would love to meet other like minded people.

Wildlife watch: Whistling Kite

The Whistling Kite (Haliastur sphenurus) is a medium-sized diurnal raptor found throughout Australia.

Also called the Whistling Eagle or Whistling Hawk, it is named for its loud whistling call, which it often gives in flight. The Whistling Kite ranges in size from 50–60 cm (20–24 in), with a wingspan of between 123–146 cm and around 1kg in weight.

As with most raptors, females are larger and heavier than males; although females can be up to 21% larger and 42% heavier.

Male and female plumages are the same.

Adult birds are a pale buff on the head, breast and tail, with browner wings and black flight feathers.

Immature birds are a heavily streaked reddish-brown with prominent pale spots on the wings.

Throughout their lives, Whistling Kites have bone-colored legs and feet, which are unfeathered.

Overall, the Whistling Kite looks small-headed and longtailed, with wingtips falling well short of the tail tip when the bird is perched.

Though its legs are short, the bird walks easily on the ground.

Whistling Kites soar on slightly bowed wings, with their long flight feathers often well splayed.

The striking pattern on their underside of the wings is distinctive.

This is a noisy species, calling regularly in flight and while perched—even while at the nest. Its most common call is a clear descending whistle, often followed (less often preceded) by a rapid series of rising notes.

Whistling Kites are typically found near water, at elevations ranging from sea level to 1400 metres.

A species of open or lightly wooded areas, though the species as a whole is generally sedentary, some Australian birds are known to be nomadic, wandering to coastal areas in northern Australia during the dry season; some south Australian birds migrate to the south in the autumn.

Whistling Kites tend to be found singly or in pairs, but sometimes gather in larger groups, particularly during nomadic movements, at roost sites and at

sources of plentiful food.

Whistling Kites like taking small mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, insects and carrion.

In Australia they tend to live primarily on prey, except in the winter, when they subsist largely on carrion.

They regularly patrol roads in search of road kill, and hover over the edges of grass fires in search of potential prey fleeing the flames.

The Whistling Kite’s nest is a bulky platform made of sticks and lined with green leaves, placed in an upright fork of a tall tree— often a eucalypt or pine.

Pairs often re-use the same nest year after year, annually adding material until the platform becomes quite large.

Females normally lay 2–3 bluish-white eggs, which are sometimes covered with reddishbrown blotches.

Eggs are incubated for 35–40 days, and the species is reported to have a 60% hatching success.

Chicks, which are covered with cream- or buff-colored down feathers, spend 44–54 days in the nest before fledging, and are dependent on their parents for a further 6–8 weeks after leaving the nest.

In Australia, the birds generally breed between June and October in the south, and between February and May in the north, though they may nest at any time after rain providing there are adequate food supplies.

BY COURTNEY BERTLING The Woodside Moonrise Cinema is proving to be a huge hit with the last number of movies being sold out and people having to be turned away at the door.

In May, Australian Chamber Orchestra Artistic Director Richard Tognetti took musicians and surfers to the rugged surf coast and tough desert landscape of northern Western Australia.

It was to create a new performance piece that combined music and nature.

The Reef is an extraordinary performance and one that premieres in Darwin before taking off down the WA coast and concluding at the Sydney Opera House where tickets are on the verge of a sell out.

Together they have created a new work using music and film to further delve into the links between surfing, the ocean, landscape and music.

“There will be incredibly strong surfing footage; that’s an integral part,” Tognetti said.

“It’s that, and the music and the landscape.

“Those things can be superficially strung together: there are lots of films like that.

“But when you make it as a performance art piece, then you’re entering into really hard territory.”

The tour is a collaboration between WA new music organization Tura and ACO2, the ACO’s youth and regional touring ensemble.

The Reef, featuring ACO2 led by Richard Tognetti, with Mark Atkins and Steve Pigram, will be performing at the Matt Dann Cultural Centre in Port Hedland on July 12.

“It’s vital to have an entertainment option for the evenings which is not within the pub scene and open for families to enjoy,” Nancy said.

“About 360 people bought their ticket online which assured their entry and unfortunately, given our capacity there for films is 400, we had to turn away people that arrived on the night to buy tickets,” Nancy said.

Other sell outs include the John Williamson concert with over 500 attending and both nights of the Melbourne International Comedy Roadshow Festival.

“We strongly encourage people to get their tickets online to avoid missing out and if they don’t have access to a computer/printer they can call the events line and book them over the phone.”

The Shire, along with the presenting partner Woodside, has worked very hard and invested over $100,000 to upgrade the equipment and ensure a reliable service at the cinema.

“Booking tickets online has a few advantages; it means you will always be able to attend what you want, you don’t have to line up in queues to buy tickets at the Box Office which only has one sales point operational and it also means that we can track purchases, make refunds if needed and assist with peoples queries.”

Rising star for outstanding growth McLaren’s Raw Hire was named a winner at this year’s annual WA Business News’ Rising Stars Awards, held on June 13.

Members of the State’s business community came together in Perth at the awards, which recognises and celebrates the top 10 fast-growing, private companies in Western Australia.

McLaren’s Raw Hire impressed the judging panel, and was named a 2012 Rising Star for its outstanding growth.

The company finished in the top four, just missing out on the overall winner award, which went to Hagstrom Drilling.

Starting in 1998 with one LandCruiser that directors Lisa and Sean Clarke rented out from the Karratha caravan park where they lived, McLaren’s Raw Hire has doubled its turnover annually, forecast to top $32 million this financial year.

McLaren’s Raw Hire General Manager Byron Smith said the company had also tripled its staff numbers and now had a team of more than 50 employees operating out of branches in Port Hedland and Karratha and a corporate

office in Perth.

“We are planning to expand by opening a $1.5 million purpose-built branch in Newman in January next year,” Mr Smith said.

“We’re investing $12 million over the next 12 months in land and infrastructure, and a further $40 million annually in vehicles and equipment.”

Count Me In Ambassador Exmouth Carers Support Group President and former soldier Fred Platcher will be appointed a Disability Services Commission Count Me In Ambassador on Wednesday, June 27.

“For many years, I’d been organising community events involving people with disability and both Rita and Marie encouraged me to become an Ambassador,” he said.

The long-time advocate for people with disability joins 23 other Ambassadors who are committing to promoting the Count Me In vision across WA—that all people live in welcoming communities that facilitate citizenship, friendship, mutual support and a fair go for everyone.

In line with his new role and as Carers Group president, Mr Platcher— who organised today’s barbecue—is already planning a painting project for people with disability, young people and the PCYC to be held at a beach in Exmouth later this year.

The Commission launched the Ambassador program in December 2010, to enlist Ambassadors to spread the word about the importance of inclusion and access for people with disability.

Commission Community Development Manager Kerry Stopher presented Mr Platcher with his Count Me In Ambassador pin at a community barbecue event at Exmouth’s Truscott Memorial Club.

Mr Platcher, 62, who became blind as the result of a car accident in Sydney in 1982, organises community events involving people with disability, their families and carers, Police and Community Youth Centres (PCYCs) and seniors.

He said his wife Rita and the Commission’s Local Area Coordinator in Carnarvon, Marie Ross, urged him to become an Ambassador.

“My message to people with disability, their families and carers or anyone who wants to contribute to society is to have a go at getting something done, think of an inclusive idea and get the community involved—you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the results,” Mr Platcher said.

Ms Stopher said Mr Platcher’s passion to include people with disability in community events made him an ideal Ambassador.

“Fred’s enthusiasm, selflessness, participation and contribution to the community and his advocacy for people with disability are typical traits of Count Me In Ambassadors,” she said.

Dancers show off their skills at disco

By Courtney Bertling Dance Kix Karratha held a fundraising disco last Saturday night to raise money for their end of year performance.

As a theatre is no longer available for dance concerts, there are more expenses that need to be covered to make sure that the end of year concert still goes ahead.

About 200 students and friends of Dance Kix, aged four-16 attended the disco with all the money raised going back to the school for trophies, awards, medals and many other expenses.

“There are always things that we can put the money into,” owner Kristie Brown said.

“The disco is also a great way to involve other kids in the community, as it was open to all Karratha kids, not just Dance Kix students.

“We are a friendly dance school, and like to promote friendship and confidence.”

Kristie said that everyone involved loved the disco.

“We gave all the classes a chance to get up on the stage and have a little run through of the dance their classes were doing in a non performance atmosphere, just for fun.

“It’s a great way to build the students confidence and self esteem, and to also see what their fellow peers are learning.

theme with fluro novelties, the room was looking very cool!”

There were some amazing performances from the boys, all fighting to get on the stage and show the girls what they’re made of.

Special thanks to Retravision for their contribution in prizes, raffles and sausage sizzle.

Four students won some awesome prizes also kindly donated by Scotts Cycles and McDonalds.

“In fact I think they were the least shy about getting up and having a go which I was really surprised at,” Kristie said.

“I had about a dozen parents help out with selling tickets, sausages, supervision,” Kristie said.

“Ben and Douglas (the boys’ class teachers) showed off their breakdancing skills to an adoring crowd of screaming kids and we even had a special performance by Ethan Louis and Talesha Hunter.”

“Many hands make light work, and wow for our first disco ever it was running like clock work, thanks to all of these very special people that gave up their time to help out.”

Dance Kix are grateful to have such wonderful community support from local storeowners for prizes and giveaways.

“We will definitely be doing one again very soon, perhaps at the end of each term.”

Shire Celebrates Dippa Visit By V Swans regional development manager Clint Degebrodt The Auskick Road Show rolled through the Pilbara last week and made a huge impact in the Shire of Roebourne with AFL Legend and Auskick Ambassador Robert “Dippa” Dipierdomenico in town to inspire kids and parents alike.

In his last tour before handing the reins over to fellow Hawk legend and Brownlow Medallist Shane Crawford, Dipierdomenico’s message remains as strong as ever, “Footy is Australia’s great game and it’s fantastic to travel around this great country and see girls and boys from all backgrounds

playing our great game.”

‘Dippa’ wowed the kids at Pegs Creek and St Paul’s with his energy and expertise and ran sessions with all of the Shire’s Auskickers including Dampier, Karratha and Wickham.

The biggest thrills might have been had by the parents, particularly those long term fans of the brown and gold who got to rub shoulders with one of the best Hawks to play the game.

The kids asked, “Is he better than Buddy Franklin?” and the answer is clear, with five Premierships 130 goals from a wing, a spot n the Hall of Fame and a Brownlow Medal, he is one of the best of them all.

of State Manager of Auskick with the Western Australian Football Commission has been along for the ride, but it’s not all fun without work for the team.

“We are here in a consultative role to find out what the Pilbara as a whole and it’s individual communities need and want for all junior footy development.” he said.

“We want to find the best way to work with communities to assist program enhancements for all kids.”

Big things are planned for the programs in the Shire of Roebourne as footy continues to grow and the Wickham and Dampier Auskick Centres may just be kicking the footy around Paterson’s Oval in round 22.

Basketball heats up the winter nights As Karratha enjoys the chilly winter nights, inside the Karratha Entertainment Centre, the basketball action in the KBA Winter season continues to be hot and fiery.

While a lot of other sports competition is currently being played in town, the Karratha basketball scene is still very much upbeat and exciting.

A lot of new teams have joined this short Karratha Basketball Association (KBA) winter season

in preparation for the summer competition later this year.

One of the new teams is the NXT-G basketball team.

Karratha’s basketball enthusiasts continue to grow in number as new players arrive, even if some long time players leave our transient town.

Glory has strong win over Nickol 1 The seventh round of the 2012 Karratha District Junior Soccer season was held over the weekend with all teams now having played an even number of games.

In the 13s competition on the weekend there was a hard fought game between Dampier 1 and Nickol 1 with Dampier 1 running out the winners.

The other two games resulted in solid wins to Glory and Nickol 2.

In the 17s competition there was an exciting game between Dampier and Nickol 2 with two late goals scored by Dampier giving them the win.

In the other game, Glory had a strong win over Nickol 1 with Brodie Traine scoring four times for Glory.

Good luck to all players competing in the North West Inter Town Competition in Port Hedland between Karratha, Port Hedland and Newman on the weekend of June 30.

The 15’s and 18’s games were played between the North East team consisting of players from Port and South Hedland, Yandiyarra and Newman, against the South West team including players from Tom Price, Karratha, Wickham, Onslow and Roebourne.

The match was part of the celebration of ‘talent football’ hosted by the North Pilbara Football League.

Get fit and have fun with holiday sport program

By Courtney Bertling During the July school holidays, Inclusion WA will work with community groups and sporting clubs in Karratha and surrounding areas providing a multi-sport holiday program to kids of all abilities living in and around Karratha.

Inclusive WA is a program open to people aged seven-30 of all abilities, however it was targeted at children with disabilities and their siblings in particular.

Four different sports will be allocated across two weeks including rugby league, lawn bowls, basketball and football.

Plus, children who attend go into the draw to win daily prizes, or the major prize at the end of the program, being a digital camera.

Denver De Cruz and Matt Shaw are the guys behind the program and have got to know each person who signs up and attends regularly.

“The kids all work together and really shows the strength of the program, kids of all ages, whether they have a disability or not join in,” Denver said.

“It shows kids from an early age that there is nothing different about someone with a disability, that a disability doesn’t set someone apart from life.

• All smiles at basketball last school holidays “So many people have become involved, organisations, schools, carers and the response has been really positive,” he said.

“Our biggest goal is for all kids that grow up in Karratha that engage in the program to know that having a disability doesn’t need to hold them back in life.”

In week one, rugby league will be played at the Bulgarra Oval on Wednesday, July 11 between 4-6pm.

On Thursday, July 12, basketball will

be played at St Luke’s College between 10am-12pm and on Friday, July 13, lawn bowls will be played at the Karratha Lawn Bowls Club between 10am-12pm.

In week two, Aussie rules will be played at St Luke’s College on Wednesday, July 18 between 12-2pm.

On Thursday, July 19, a community fun day will be held at St Luke’s College between 11am-1pm and on Friday, July 20, lawn bowls will be played at the Karratha Lawn Bowls Club between 10am-12pm.

Cold nights don’t stop rugby games A cold night at Kevin Richards Oval (Millars Well) saw the Karratha Roosters host the Karratha Storm on Saturday night.

It looked like it was going to be a great game with both teams coming out launching their bodies at one another in the first ten minutes trying to gain the upper hand and put first points on the board.

The Roosters scored the opening try, with the Storm scoring soon after.

With good defence and strong running from Taylor Lee, Reid Unasa and Lee Te Maari of the Roosters forward pack, saw them score three more tries leading 24 to six at the half time break.

The second half started as the first with some big hits (tackles) made by both teams, but as the

half wore on Storm began to tire with Roosters scoring some crowd pleasing long distance tries and running out winners with a 56 to 16 score line at full time.

Leading the way was Roosters captain David Wailu who led his team to their first win for the season. Pilbara Rugby League Best Player votes for the game went to, three points: David Wailu- Roosters, two points: Tim Streets- Storm, one points Jason Harris- Roosters.

The other game for the round saw the Karratha Broncos hosting the Wickham Wasps on Saturday night at Bulgarra oval.

Broncos came out firing, with their forwards making some damaging runs through the Wasps defensive line.

With the momentum, Broncos quickly laid on two

trys to be 12 points up after 15 minutes.

The Wasps were shellshocked but managed to regroup and laid on a couple of try’s through Willie Live and Mananui Tito.

At half time it was all locked up at 12 all.

The second half started out similar to the first, with the Broncos coming out hard.

Both teams crossed the try line more than once and with 20 minutes remaining it was tied up again at 24 all.

The Wasps seemed to have the fitness advantage as they lifted in the final 15 minutes.

When Mikolaj Cherrington sliced through the Broncos defence from dummy half and offloaded to Aorangi Stokes to cross for a try, the Wasps found themselves 10 points up.

The Wasps then held on to the lead to register their third win for the season by 34 to 24.

Best players for the Wasps were Mikolaj Cherrington, Luke Walker and Aorangi Stokes.

Captain, Junior Tuliau and Cody Felton also had strong games.

Paul Bates impressed for the Broncos.

Next week’s games see’s the Roosters take on the Broncos at Millars Well oval and a top of the table clash between the two undefeated teams, the Port Hedland Hawks and Wickham Wasps in Hedland.

Net-Set-Go! The Dampier Netball Club Net-Set-Go children had a wonderful time using the Netball Activity Centre at training on Monday, June 25.

The activity centre is a great and different way for the children to learn new skills.

The centre was purchased

by Ertech for the North West Region Netball Association to develop skills and attract children to join the sport.

Dampier Netball Club looks forwarded to using it again in the future.

Fifty-two riders made up Solo and Team categories in this year’s Burrup Mountain Bike Club 6hr Race.

The start saw riders contend with warm windy conditions as they set out over the new 5.4km course.

Riders were keen to get into a good rhythm in order to get their team off to a good start.

Solo contender Wynaand Jordan had a tyre sidewall tear, which ended his race.

Team strategies were soon put into place with regular rider changeovers to enable a quick feed to keep the energy up.

At dusk the wind dropped and Darryl Collins of Team Skid-Mark set a lap record of 15.08.

As night fell riders lit-up the Karratha Hills which was an impressive sight from the top of the climb.

The second half of the race saw some consistent lap times.

The air temperature dropped which didn’t help riders with cramping.

Eddie Morgan of Team Scott No Idea suffered a puncture, which proved the difference as they were just beaten by 32 seconds.

A steely determination got all teams over the line after 6 hours of mountain biking.
